Here's an app that both children and parents can enjoy: PowerSchool Mobile. Many school districts use the PowerSchool system to manage grades and reports. If your child's school is a participant, you can use the mobile app to keep a close eye on your child's educational progress. Depending on how a teacher chooses to use the tool in their classroom, you may also have access to handouts, attendance records, school bulletins, and more.

While not every school offers support for the PowerSchool Mobile application, it is worth checking with your child's teacher to see if the option is available. Sorry kids, but it isn't possible to hide report cards with the PowerSchool app. Parents can manage what push and email notifications they receive from the child's school. 10 Teacher-Recommended Math Apps and Online Tools

Whether you teach online or in person this fall, these digital math tools may come in handy for grades pre-K through 12.

For some math teachers, digital tools that help students visualize math concepts like Desmos or websites that encourage mathematical discussion like Fraction Talks were already a part of their repertoire before the pandemic. But for other teachers, remote learning pushed them to explore math apps and online resources for the first time.

We spoke to hundreds of educators and sifted through more than 500 comments to hear about what math tools they found helpful and unhelpful during remote learning this spring, and which are making the cut to use in the new school year.

Math Skills Practice

A number of math apps and online tools can help students develop the necessary foundational understanding of arithmetic operations they’ll need as a baseline for more challenging math problems later on, math teachers told us.

To help younger students practice skills like counting, addition, and subtraction, Ashley Blackwelder, an elementary STEAM coordinator in South Carolina, highly recommends Moose Math , a free app for iPhones and iPads. In Moose Math, students play math games that earn them points to help build a town. Blackwelder says the format is easy for kids to navigate and great for short attention spans.

Curriculum and instructional designer Cassie Tabrizi recommended Happy Numbers (pre-K–grade 5), a subscription-based website ($14.50 per student or $1,450 per site for first-time schools) that breaks down mathematical equations to help students build understanding of higher-order math concepts. To use it, students transform into a dinosaur character and solve math problems to hatch dinosaur eggs. Tabrizi said that the website is helpful, but she recommends using it in moderation: It can feel tedious for students if they practice longer than 10 minutes a day.

Students fight monsters in the persona of a wizard in Prodigy (grades 1–8), a free game-based website (also available as an app for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android). Prodigy is loved by kids, but less so by educators because it is more play based. Brittney Paige, a fifth-grade teacher in Seattle, says that even though it is more of a game, she likes that it automatically targets math concepts that students struggled with in its preassessment and tracks how much progress they make on target areas. Most teachers offer Prodigy as an option for students if they finish an assignment early.

Zearn (grades 1–5), a free, self-paced, web-based program aligned with Eureka Math—a free pre-K through 12 math curriculum—starts a typical lesson with fun warm-up activities, like adding up how many apples a cartoon fox eats, to engage students. As they work through the program, students complete timed arithmetic problems, watch instructional videos on new concepts, and solve practice problems. Shannon McGrath, an instructional coach in Western Springs, Illinois, says that Zearn is good “high-level, conceptual practice” and gives good feedback for both teachers and students, but can sometimes progress too slowly for kids who master concepts quickly.

Open Math Tasks

Open math tasks—problems that typically have more than one answer—help students develop a conceptual understanding of math rather than get hung up on memorizing facts, said math educators we talked to, who consistently mentioned three free websites to use for open math tasks.

Open Middle (pre-K–grade 12) leaves parts of an equation blank and asks students to fill them in to make it true. “I love Open Middle for remote learning, especially paired with a Google Jamboard ,” says McGrath. “The problems inspire inquiry thinking, gamelike play, creativity, and perseverance.”

McGrath also likes Would You Rather Math (pre-K–grade 12) for community building. When using the site, students choose between two real-life examples—like a box of chocolates with five rows and 14 columns or a box of chocolates with seven rows and nine columns—and have to make a mathematical argument to validate their choice.

Which One Doesn’t Belong? (pre-K–grade 12), a similar site, showcases four shapes, numbers, or graphs and asks students to describe which one doesn’t belong, using math vocabulary. “This is great for opening a synchronous discussion, as it is considered a low-floor, high-ceiling task,” says Joseph Manfre, a math specialist for the Hawaii Department of Education. High school math teacher Mary Bourassa has her calculus students identify reasons why each graph in a set of four doesn't belong by indicating graph characteristics like asymptotes and non-differentiable points, and later has her students create their own WODB sets.

Rich Math Tasks

For rich math tasks—tasks that lend themselves to rigor, collaboration, and conceptual thinking—math educators noted a couple of websites.

Fraction Talks (grades 1–12) is a website filled with images of shapes—triangles within triangles, for example—that encourages math discussions. Simply asking students, “What do you observe?” can prompt them to share what and how many shapes they notice, while asking “How many shapes are red or shaded?” encourages students to explore and understand fractions. Once students have a basic understanding of fractions, they can start to explore more complex concepts. By prompting students to look at subsections of a shape—and what fractions they created when combined— Bryan Penfound helped his seventh- and eighth-grade students to visualize adding and multiplying fractions .

Simulation Tools

According to math teachers, simulations, like manipulating an expression and seeing a change in a graph, are great tools to help students visualize math concepts.

Applets—a simple code with a specific objective—were mentioned by a few teachers as a good resource. Emma Chiappetta's statistics students use applets from RossmanChance.com to manipulate and identify sampling distribution patterns in graphs, for example. She creates a basic guide on how to use the applet with which values to change, and then asks questions to get students thinking critically about those patterns. Chiappetta also uses applets from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for her linear algebra students.

Desmos (grades 6–12), a website with interactive math activities and a graphing calculator (also available as an app on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android), is another free tool and a favorite among teachers, we heard. While social and emotional learning (SEL) and math may not seem to go hand in hand, teachers integrated SEL into math lessons using Desmos. In the first week of distance learning, Ashley Taplin, a secondary math specialist in San Antonio, Texas, had her students graph how they were feeling , for example. Taplin says she particularly loves that teachers can make their own activities—like this one about parabolas and this card sort , where students match cards with the name, corresponding equation, and correct graphical representation of a function.

The best educational apps on iPad for kids and young students

We don't intend to add to the problem of "TV and computing devices as babysitters" that has generally been viewed as detrimental, but some screen time is unavoidable. Instead, the key is balance — and when screen time is needed, make sure it's full of high-quality, age-appropriate content.

An iPad mini — especially one in a rugged child-proof case — can be a vital part of early learning before a child is ready to start public school or homeschooling. It can also play an important role in assisting young students in and after school.

While it is important to limit screen time, and encourage outdoor and social interaction, the iPad remains a great tool to help develop young minds. With the help of some recommended apps, kids can get a big boost throughout their primary school years, and beyond.

Pre-school apps for ages one to four

When considering an iPad app for young children, you want to be sure there will be no advertising. This often means that quality apps will require a subscription, but this also ensures regular updates and refreshed content.

Helping your kids understand art, music, letters, numbers, and other foundational skills is key at this stage. It is as important to their mental health as nutritious food and exercise is to their physical health.

One example of a well-regarded, teacher-approved app for children from age two to eight is ABCmouse , which focuses on learning games. It uses customizable avatars, animals, and colorful graphics to help build a love for learning.

The app is used in more than 70,000 classrooms, and nearly half of all US public libraries, according to developer Age of Learning. Like other apps we'll look at, ABCmouse is certified to be compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and also approved by the kidSAFE+ for safety and privacy.

After a 30-day free trial, ABCmouse requires a subscription. Parents can opt for paying $12.99 a month, or the better value of $59.99 for a year. The program works with a wide variety of recent and older iPads and iPhones, and requires iPadOS or iOS 10.0 or later.

BrainPOP Jr is an app available for kindergarten to 3rd grade students on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV . It focuses on videos, activities, and quizzes across all major subjects, with personable animated characters as the hosts.

It offers a free trial, and costs $14.99 a month or $119 a year for full access. It requires iOS or iPadOS 14.0 or later.

Khan Academy has a variety of apps that assist students from pre-K all the way through college. For pre-K through Grade 2, the Khan Academy Kids app focuses on reading, math, and social and emotional learning.

The company offers these apps with no ads and no subscriptions, but encourages parents to make donations if they find the apps useful. The app's library includes access to thousands of kids' books, and was an Editor's Choice app for the App Store .

Khan Academy Kids requires iOS or iPadOS 12.0 or later.

Apps for young learners, ages four to nine

As your child begins pre-school and elementary school or homeschooling in earnest, the focus on developing skills in reading and math become even more important. These apps cover the early primary-school years from ages four to eight.

Dragonbox offers Kahoot! Learn to Read by Poio , an app which encourages self-driven reading development. It requires a subscription, but the $35.99 annual or $5.99 monthly cost also covers the company's two math-oriented apps, Numbers and Big Numbers .

There's even an app to teach children as young as five the process needed to solve basic algebraic linear equations, called Kahoot! Algebra . There's another in this age category that teach kids how to play chess .

If your kids aged two to nine are enjoying educational shows on PBS, they might like the PBS Kids Games app, which features many of their favorite characters. It features a wide variety of games for ages two through eight.

The games can also work offline, making the app ideal for road trips. The US version supports both English and Spanish.

There is also a related PBS Kids Video app, that features over 1,000 episodes including "Sesame Street," "Rosie's Rules," "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood," "Curious George," and more. It also supports both English and Spanish.

From elementary to middle and high school

By the later stages of elementary school, students will have acquired basic problem-solving skills and reading, writing, social, and language abilities. The purpose of schooling now turns to preparing young people for their future, as they move on into middle and high school, and beyond.

Some of the companies that made the apps they enjoyed as children offer apps for older kids and teens as well. Khan Academy in particular offers preparatory apps for more the advanced subjects students will encounter in middle and high school, and even college.

This includes a range of physics, chemistry, biology, geometry, algebra, history, music, languages, financial literacy, and test preparation, among other topics.

Dragonbox offers apps for ages eight and higher that focus on multiplication, algebra, and geometry. As students leave elementary school and begin to focus more on specific subjects and general testing, note-taking and and study aids become more important.

Apple Notes can come into play as a useful tool that can sync across a student's devices, and is said to be getting a big upgrade with AI augmentation and summarization abilities. This will come with iOS and iPadOS 18, coming later this year, but it is already an excellent note-taking app right now.

Quizlet is an app and website that can take your notes and turn them into flash cards, outlines, and quizzes. The app for iPhone and iPad offers AI-based teaching, notes and flash cards, practice tests and more. It requires iOS or iPadOS 12 or later.

It's basic level can be used for free, but a subscription is required to remove ads and get homework help, which costs $7.99 a month, or $35.99 a year.

In later elementary school, as well as middle and high school, language study finally goes beyond just a student's native tongue and into learning foreign languages. Duolingo is used by both students and adults to help them learn the basics and beyond of new languages.

It has a very student-friendly interface, and supports more than 40 languages that reinforce not just words and numbers, but grammar and sentence structure. It can be used for free with limitations, but offers a $9.99 monthly or $83.99 yearly subscription.

The interest in and skill in learning is a vital key to future success in life. These iPad and iPhone apps can foster a love of learning that will make a student's life much easier throughout their educational experience, and prepare them for future careers and challenges.

Avoid the studying just for the test/quiz programs and also what is wrong about learning to use regular programs like Pages, Word, Wolfram Alpha, NightSky, GoodNotes, Elements, and Notability, all are listed as 4+ years old these are examples only, there are many others to choose from. Also what is wrong with Wikipedia (I had a set of WorldBook  encyclopedias in the 4th grade courtesy of my parents) and yes I saw all the  juicy bits. :smile:

How to do Algebra more efficiently? Download Solve4x ! It is a math equation solver that will help high school and college students, but not university students. This application helps solve relatively simple equations. There are two options available. You can either take a picture of your equation or type it manually. Also note, this application does not solve equations with brackets. 

And this app is available for homework help only on Android devices.  Hiper Scientific Calculator helps with solving tasks that are related to logarithms, trigonometry, etc. You can view the history of operations to see how some specific functions in the past were solved. It's comfortable to do homework because of highlighted syntax.  This application will also help with your homework on engineering and scientific calculations – they are available as separate modes. Even though this app is free, you will not see any ads inside.

Classroom Tech: Teaching Math with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil

This is a guest post from my wife Amy, who used an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil in the classroom with great success. She used a combination of apps with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, and shares her story here. You can find more of her posts over at mathista.org .

This fall I took a long-term substitute job in my kids’ school district. I have been out of the classroom for over a decade, and during those years curriculum and technology have changed a great deal. I knew the learning curve would be steep when I stepped back into the classroom, but I was ready for the challenge.

Luckily the classroom I entered had a broken Smartboard . Did I say lucky ? Yes! This is how I felt as I started the job of teaching Algebra and Math 8 students in late October. Because they weren’t used to being taught using the Smartboard, this would be one area that I would have some built-in time to get up to speed. My own kids (grades 9 and 6) promised they’d help me learn to use the Smartboard as soon as it was up and running.

As the weeks went on, I got my teaching sea legs back and was eager to start using the Smartboard. After all, we’d entered a graphing unit in one of my classes and this technology would make things A LOT easier for teaching. The major problem with the board was that it wouldn’t calibrate. This means that when you write, what you are writing shows up an inch or more away from where you actually wrote it on the board. One day after school my kids helped try to calibrate it, and we thought we had it working. However, after a day of trying to use it in my Algebra class, I quickly realized that it was still enough off that it wasn’t very helpful.

Using the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil with Apple TV

So, the Smartboard was still broken, but I realized that I could use my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and connect it to the Apple TV in the classroom (which is conveniently displayed on the Smartboard). I used the Paper app and pulled up a blank note of graph paper. With my Math 8 classes, we started to graph lines on the grid and we worked on solving problems using the multi-colored pens available in the app.

Paper was great for what I was doing at the time. We were graphing lines in the y = mx+b form and the graph paper of 10x10 in the app worked very well. However, I knew that as we progressed into larger values, it would be a problem for me. I wished I could use Google Drive for any document and have it be interactive the way Paper was.

Using Paper with a combination of apps with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil to show algebraic substitutions

My daughter is a musician and she uses the  forScore  app for her piano music ( read more about her initial iPad Pro for Pianists review ). She recently purchased an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil for her music. One day while I was out for an afternoon run, I had a GREAT idea! I’d seen her annotate and pull in music to forScore using screen shots of paper music. Could I use forScore for my math classes? I mentioned it to her and she said, “of course ... you can pull anything in there!”

Soon we were taking screen shots of Google Drive documents, graph paper and even blank paper for notes. forScore pairs with DocScanner , so there are times that I scan in a document that I have a printed copy of. I’m able to use all the annotating features; highlighters, different colored pens, the eraser, text box etc. The Apple Pencil is fantastic paired with the iPad Pro. There's no lag when writing, so it feels very natural, just like a real pencil on paper. However, when writing on the Smartboard, there's a bit of a lag which can interrupt your flow.

The Smartboard has since been updated and a new projector was installed. It now calibrates properly so I am able to use it as intended, connected to my desktop computer. However, because I was forced to find this solution and think outside the box, I now have this option as well.

Teacher Tips: Using the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil

Formulas - The Google Drive app doesn’t work well with math formulas. Even if you have created a document on the Google Drive desktop using formulas, when you open it in the app, formulas don’t show up. As a result, you can’t take a screen shot of a document with formulas in Drive. To use documents with formulas, use DocScanner to scan the paper copy and pull it into forScore.

Erasing - The eraser in forScore can’t change size the way it can in some other apps. You can use the side of the Apple pencil to make your eraser larger than if you just use the tip.

Organizing Documents in forScore - To organize your documents, give them a title and then label them by composer. For example, some of my “composers” are: Module 3 Lesson 3 and Graph Paper .

Airplay - Some of the challenges I face with this method are that I’m using Airplay. It kicks me off the network frequently and the screen on the Smartboard goes dark if the iPad goes to sleep.

Be Prepared

Here are some tips for working around issues with the network and the display:

• If you are working with the iPad and Apple TV for one class try to use that same combo for the other classes. In my classroom, it is tricky to switch the input from one to another quickly between classes. I find that I am more successful when I plan all the lessons to either use the same technology OR to use the technology for one group and then in the other class I have a no technology day.
• To avoid having the screen go dark and having to re-enter the passcode many times during a class period make sure your iPad settings are to 10 minutes or longer for sleep during inactivity. The downside to this is that it will drain your battery more quickly, so remember at the end of use to put it back to a reasonable length of time.
• Do have backups of the problems/notes you plan to use in case the technology fails. You probably already have individual copies of notes for the kids if you are using it for notes so it is easy to simply switch to the whiteboard. If you are doing something with individual whiteboards it is easy enough to write your problems up on the whiteboard or chalkboard. Using word problems? It is not a bad idea to have 4-6 copies of what you are using so that you could put the kids into groups and have them work through the material with hard copies. There’s nothing worse than having an entire lesson derailed because the technology doesn’t work.

Android's Circle to Search can now help students solve math and physics homework

It can show step-by-step instructions on how to solve a range of math and physics problems..

Google has introduced another capability for its Circle to Search feature at the company's annual I/O developer conference, and it's something that could help students better understand potentially difficult class topics . The feature will now be able to show them step-by-step instructions for a "range of physics and math word problems." They just have to activate the feature by long-pressing the home button or navigation bar and then circling the problem that's got them stumped, though some math problems will require users to be signed up for Google's experimental Search Labs feature.

The company says Circle to Search's new capability was made possible by its new family of AI models called LearnLM that was specifically created and fine-tuned for learning. It's also planning to make adjustments to this particular capability and to roll out an upgraded version later this year that could solve even more complex problems "involving symbolic formulas, diagrams, graphs and more." Google launched Circle to Search earlier this year at a Samsung Unpacked event, because the feature was initially available on Galaxy 24, as well as on Pixel 8 devices. It's now also out for the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S22, Z Fold, Z Flip, Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 devices, and it'll likely make its way to more hardware in the future.

In addition to the new Circle to Search capability, Google has also revealed that devices that can support the Gemini for Android chatbot assistant will now be able to bring it up as an overlay on top of the application that's currently open. Users can then drag and drop images straight from the overlay into apps like Gmail, for instance, or use the overlay to look up information without having to swipe away from whatever they're doing. They can tap "Ask this video" to find specific information within a YouTube video that's open, and if they have access to Gemini Advanced, they can use the "Ask this PDF" option to find information from within lengthy documents.

Google is also rolling out multimodal capabilities to Nano, the smallest model in the Gemini family that can process information on-device. The updated Gemini Nano, which will be able to process sights, sounds and spoken language, is coming to Google's TalkBack screen reader later this year. Gemini Nano will enable TalkBack to describe images onscreen more quickly and even without an internet connection. Finally, Google is currently testing a Gemini Nano feature that can alert users while a call is ongoing if it detects common conversation patterns associated with scams. Users will be alerted, for instance, if they're talking to someone asking them for their PINs or passwords or to someone asking them to buy gift cards.

Google is enhancing Android’s Circle to Search — the feature that lets you literally circle something on your Android phone’s screen to search it on Google — with a new ability to generate instructions on how to solve school math and physics problems .

Using an Android phone or tablet, students can now use Circle to Search to get AI assistance on mathematical word problems from their homework. The feature will help unpack the problem and list what the student needs to do to get the correct answer. According to Google, it won’t actually do the homework for you — only help you approach the problem.

Over the past year, the use of AI tools like ChatGPT has become a hot topic in the field of education, with plenty of concern over how students can and will use it to get work done quickly. Google, however, is explicitly positioning this as a feature to support education, potentially walking around some of the concerns about AI doing all of the work for students.

Later this year, Circle to Search will also gain the ability to solve complex math equations that involve formulas, diagrams, graphs, and more. Google is using LearnLM, its new AI model that’s fine-tuned for learning, to make the new Circle to Search abilities work.

Circle to Search first launched on  Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series in January and then on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro later the same month. It’s one of the star new features of Android, and although iOS users can’t yet circle their math homework for help, anything is possible .
