Everything Apple revealed at the iPhone 16 launch event: Apple Watch Series 10, AirPods 4, iOS 18 and more

If you didn't catch the event in real time, here are all of the details about apple's newest phones, smartwatches and earbuds..

September is here and, like clockwork, so are new iPhones. Apple unveiled its latest iPhone models at an event in Cupertino today, and as expected, the iPhone 16 handsets are largely iterative of last year's models. While the smartphones, standard and Pro versions, took center stage, Apple also showed off the new Apple Watch Series 10, two new pairs of AirPods and detailed hearing aid features coming to the second-generation AirPods Pro. The company also went into detail on its latest mobile chipsets that power the new iPhones, and reminded folks what they can expect when iOS 18 launches later this month with Apple Intelligence. If you weren't able to catch the announcements live, Engadget has you covered; here's everything announced at Apple's iPhone 16 event.

iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

Apple unveiled the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus at the event, which feature a water- and dust-resistant design and new colors including ultramarine, teal and pink. The iPhone 16 has a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Plus has a 6.7-inch display. Both of those can achieve up to 2,000 nits of brightness, and can go all the way down to 1 nit in the dark. The Action button has found its way to this series of iPhones as well, and it's just as customizable as the one we saw on last year's Pro-model iPhones.

There's also a new easy-access camera control "button" of sorts, which allows you to quickly control the camera with a slide of your finger. This tool can also tap into Visual Intelligence , an AI-powered feature coming in iOS 18 that can tell you more about anything you point your camera at. It appears similar to Google Lens, and can do things like add live event dates to your calendar after you point your camera at a flyer you see on the street. The camera array on the standard iPhone 16 models includes a 48-megapixel main Fusion camera, a 12MP telephoto lens and a new ultrawide camera with autofocus. This array will also be able to capture Spatial Photos that can be viewed on Apple's Vision Pro.

We confirmed in our hands-on text of the iPhone 16 that it has the same style of camera control button as the more expensive iPhone 16 Pro. It's a physical button, but haptics add another layer of feedback for when you make a "light press" rather than fully pressing the button down.

Both standard iPhone 16 models run on the new A18 chip , which has a 16-core neural engine optimized for generative models. The internals feature a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, both of which will be crucial for powering all of the new Apple Intelligence features coming to iOS 18.

According to Apple, both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have larger batteries than their predecessors, and when combined with the efficiencies added from the A18 chipset and iOS 18 improvements, should make for a much longer-lasting battery lives overall (although Apple did not provide an exact estimate). Both the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are available for pre-order today starting at $799 and $899, respectively, and will be widely available on September 20.

The Pro series of iPhones includes the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max this year, which have 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch ProMotion, always-on displays, respectively. Both are made with Grade 5 Titanium, which Apple claims to be even lighter than stainless steel. These handsets will be available in four new colors: black, white, natural and desert, the latter of which resembles a dusty gold color.

According to the company, the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence, being able to take full advantage of all the new features coming in iOS 18. These handsets run on the new A18 Pro chipset, which takes advantage of 3nm transistors and is even faster and more efficient than the standard A18 chip found in the regular iPhone 16 lineup.

The rear camera array on both models includes a 48MP Fusion camera, 48MP ultrawide shooter and a 12MP telephoto lens. The main camera's improvements allow for 4K, 120fps video and slow-motion recording. Both phones also have the new camera control button that provides easier access to the camera and all of its tools, both for capture and editing. There are also four studio-quality microphones built in to both smartphones for improved audio capture, and they allow for Spatial Audio recording, too.

Both the iPhone 16 Pro series and the standard iPhone 16 handsets supports Qi2 wireless charging, and Apple will come out with new MagSafe charging cases that account for the new camera control button. The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on Friday, September 13, starting at $999 and $1,199, respectively. They'll be widely available on September 20.

AirPods 4 launched today during the iPhone 16 event, as rumors suggested. These have a redesigned bud shape that's suppose to fit more ear shapes and be more comfortable overall. They have the H2 chip inside, which will provide improved audio quality and enable features like Personalized Spatial Audio. The charging case has a USB-C port, and it's the smallest AirPods charging case to date.

In addition to the regular AirPods 4, there will be a second model that includes support for active noise cancellation and Transparency mode. Conversation Awareness will also automatically lower your media volume level when the buds detect you talking to someone. The standard AirPods 4 cost $129 and the AirPods 4 with ANC cost $179; both are available for pre-order today and will be widely available on September 20.

Apple announced new features coming to the second-gen AirPods Pro that are designed to help prevent (and increase awareness around) hearing loss. A feature called "Hearing Protection" will be turned on by default, and users will be able to take a clinically-validated hearing test to see if they already have some hearing loss. On top of that, AirPods Pro will have a clinical-grade hearing aid feature built-in as well, which will work with a hearing profile created after a user takes the hearing test.

Apple Watch Series 10

Apple introduced the Apple Watch Series 10 today, the natural successor to last year’s Series 9. It has the biggest display and thinnest design ever on an Apple Watch, and the wide-angle OLED display is even a bit larger than that on the Apple Watch Ultra. The case has more rounded corners and a wider aspect ratio, both of which, combined with the larger screen, should provide more space to interact with graphics and text on the Watch. Apple claims the screen is 40 percent brighter when looked at from an angle, and it'll show a second hand ticking away even when your wrist is down.

The Apple Watch Series 10 is powered by the new S10 SiP chip, which Apple claims is built for performance, power efficiency and intelligence (i.e. Apple Intelligence). One example of Apple Intelligence at work on the Series 10 is the new Photos watch face, which will curate the best photos from your library and serve them up to you automatically.

When it comes to fitness features, Apple announced that the latest version of watchOS will allow the Series 10 to detect signs of sleep apnea, provided you're wearing your Series 10 to sleep regularly. Apple claims it's awaiting FDA clearance, and it expects the sleep apnea detection feature to launch in more than 150 countries. Elsewhere in the activity sphere, the Series 10 will have scuba tracking features and it will support the new Tides app in watchOS 11.

Another new feature is the ability to play audio directly from the Watch's speaker, which could be helpful if you don't have AirPods or another pair of Bluetooth earbuds handy. The Apple Watch Series 10 be available in a new polished, jet-black aluminum finish and new polished titanium finishes. It's available for pre-order today and will be widely available on September 20.

Get ready to buy some new cables. Apple is about to announce the iPhone 15 and, with it, a change from Lightning to USB-C. It’s one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in years — and one that’s likely to infuriate as many people in need of new cables as it does excite those who are happy to consolidate around just one.

Alongside the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, Apple is also expected to introduce new Apple Watches. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are expected to be modest updates focused on internal improvements. We’re also expecting a new line of accessories using a more sustainable material and possibly some other gear — like an updated AirPods Pro case — that shifts over to USB-C as well.

The event starts at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, and you’ll be able to follow along with the latest here. We’ve got an embed of Apple’s YouTube stream, and our own team is on the ground reporting live with photos and videos. Apple’s in-person presentation usually runs slightly ahead of the streamed one, so you can follow along below to get the details as they’re happening.

The iPhone 13 has arrived, with an iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max – all equipped with a slightly tweaked design and a good swathe of boosted features. That's not all though, with the new Apple Watch Series 7 also making its debut alongside a new iPad and a big refresh for the iPad mini line. It wasn’t an Apple event to knock your socks off but there’s still plenty to get your teeth into.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini

The new iPhone 13 models were a cert to be announced and Apple obliged. The new “13” range directly follows on from the iPhone 12, with even the Mini sticking around.

At first glance the iPhone 13 series does not appear to be a dramatic change. The notch might be fractionally smaller but you’re still looking at a dual-camera phone with those familiar chiselled jaw lines.

However, the most interesting changes are in the camera. The main sensor keeps the same resolution, 12MP, but the size of the tiny wee photosites grows from 1.4 micron to 1.7 micron. Add that to an ultra wide-aperture f/1.6 lens and you get the most light-sensitive camera of any iPhone to date. There’s more.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini also get the sensor shift stabilisation seen in the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Apple is playing night photography hard ball, and it will consolidate the iPhone’s position as the best phone series for video.

These phones’ wide camera still have a 12MP sensor and f/2.4 lens. The iPhone 13 has a chance of winning a best-in-class title for its primary camera, but the ultra-wide probably doesn’t.

Other hardware changes are standard annual updates. The iPhone 13 jumps from an A14 Bionic CPU to an A15 Bionic. Apple only compared it to non-specific “competitors”, in other words Android phones, saying this the CPU is 50 per cent faster, the GPU up to 30 per cent faster.

But if this were to be a mind-blowing improvement over the iPhone 12, Apple would probably give us the generational improvement figures rather than throwing shade. However, the A15 Bionic does have some efficiency improvements, thanks to a jump to a 5nm manufacturing process.

It says the iPhone 13 mini should last 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 mini, a boost it sorely needs. And the iPhone 13 is rated for 2.5 hours longer battery life off a charge, although we don’t know specifically what these hours involve. Let’s hope it’s not streaming Apple Music with the screen off. Apple says the batteries are bigger in this generation too but, again, there are no specifics as yet.

There are screen updates too. Sort of. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini’s OLED displays are still rated at 1200-nit peak brightness, but the soft limit for general use has been increased from ~625 nits to 800 nits. The screen will seem brighter, even if the panels have the same true peak brightness as last year.

Everything Apple Announced Today

The iPhone 13 starts at £779, whereas the iPhone 13 mini starts at £679 in the UK with pre-orders from Friday, September 17. Meanwhile, iOS 15 will be available as a free update from Monday, September 20.

Apple iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini specs

  • Price: From £699 (mini), from £749
  • Display: 5.4in 2340x1080 OLED (mini), 6.1in 2532x1170 OLED
  • Storage: 128/256/512GB
  • Battery life: Up to 15 hours (mini), up to 17 hours
  • Camera: 12MP f/1.6 1.7 micron, 12MP wide f/2.4

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max

As ever, Apple has been slightly behind the curve on certain features but one spec we've been waiting for has finally come to the iPhone – ‘ProMotion’ 120Hz displays. The regular iPhone 13 is still chasing that curve, sticking with a similar display to its predecessor. However, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are now equipped with an LTPO panel – allowing for that 120Hz variable refresh rate, upping your scrolling and gaming game . The rest of the story of the new iPhone 13 Pro models is all about the camera. But, first, here are the key specs:

  • Price: From £949 (Pro), from £1,049 (Pro Max)
  • Display: 6.1in 2532x1170 120Hz LTPO (Pro), 6.7in 2778x1284 120Hz LTPO (Pro Max)
  • Storage: 128/256/512GB/1TB
  • Battery life: Up to 22 hours (Pro), up to 28 hours (Pro Max)
  • Camera: 12MP 77mm tele (f/2.8), 12MP wide (f/1.5), 12MP ultra-wide (f/1.8)

The Pro models have a completely new trio of cameras, all supported by new software features. The telephoto brings 3x optical zoom along with a 92 per cent improvement to low light performance compared to the iPhone 12 Pro. And the ultrawide is now capable of macro photography. All cameras support Night Mode too with SmartHDR 4 offering improved colour, contrast and lighting.

Apple’s most interesting new camera feature is Photographic Styles, letting users select a theme ahead of taking a photo – making it clear to the iPhone 13 Pro what look you’re going for and what information it needs to prioritise. Some of the styles include Rich Contrast, Vibrant and Vibrant Warm. Both Photographic Styles and the new Cinematic Mode are coming to the regular iPhone 13 as well. Cinematic Mode allows fast and clean shifting of focus while recording video, an impressive feat if Apple has pulled it off successfully. On video, along with the new camera hardware, there’s support for video editor-friendly ProRes video – bringing 4K 30fps ProRes to the camera app.

The iPhone 13 Pro starts at £949 while the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a base price of £1,049. There’s now a 1TB storage option available as well as a shiny new Sierra Blue colour. You can pre-order these iPhone 13 Pro models from Friday, with the release date set for September 24.

The new “Pro” iPhones neatly follow on from the previous models, with a focus on enticing camera enthusiasts up to the higher-priced range. However, high refresh rates finally coming to the iPhone and even better battery life will surely acquire some new Pro converts too.

You can pre-order all iPhone 13 models from this Friday (September 17), with the release date coming on October 1.

A new Apple Watch Series 7

Many expected Apple to give its smartwatch a full redesign this year, but the Apple Watch Series 7 looks quite familiar. Apple hasn’t stayed still, though, something smartwatches always tell you off for.

The screen is 20 per cent larger and the borders are 40 per cent smaller, measuring 1.7mm. Such a tight layout makes the display appear to bend around the 3D glass of the top display layer, in Apple’s promo videos at least.

Apple says it has done this while “barely changing dimensions” but, well, they have changed. The Apple Watch Series 7 now comes in 45mm and 41mm sizes, up from the 40mm and 44m models of the Series 6.

The Watch Series 7 has “softer, more rounded corners”, and is a little tougher than last time. IP6x dust resistance joins the series’s staple 50M water resistance. Apple says the crack resistant glass is its toughest yet too. It’s thicker and the rounded shape is more resilient.

This is a tweaked design, not a full redesign, and there are no changes to battery life either, which many hoped for. The 18-hour battery life remains, although screen brightness will apparently be 70 per cent higher indoors suggesting there are some efficiency improvements under the shell.

Charging speed has improved as well. Apple says you can get from a flat battery to 80 per cent charge in 45 minutes. So, yeh, while a top-up before bed is advised if you track a long run and want to monitor your sleep, 10-20 minutes will do the trick.

The Apple Watch Series 7’s aluminium models come in five colours this time: blue, green, Product Red, Midnight and Starlight.

Most other new features are part of watchOS 8 rather than being specific to the Series 7, like improved bike ride tracking and a new Pilates mode, but there are some watch faces designed to make the most of the new look. There was no word of a new processor for the smartwatch.

Contrary to some predictions, the Apple Watch Series 7 does not bump the Watch Series 3 off the line-up. It’s the Apple Watch Series 6 that is heading to a new life on CeX shelves, as the Watch Series 3 and Watch SE remain “current”.

The Apple Watch Series 7 will be available “later this autumn”, and as usual stainless steel and higher-end variants are there for the deep-pocketed. UK prices are to be confirmed, but the series starts at $399 in the US.

It may not have been as big of a surprise as Apple dropping the new M1X MacBook Pro models out of the blue but a new iPad wasn’t necessarily expected at the “California Streaming” event. Well, it arrived along with a massive refresh to the iPad mini too.

The new regular iPad still comes with a 10.2-in Retina display but adds an Apple A13 Bionic chip, upgraded 12MP ultra-wide selfie camera and TrueTone. The addition of the A13 chip brings about 20 per cent faster performance, which Apple’s crafty statisticians reckon is three times faster than the best-selling Chromebook and six times faster than the best-selling Android tablet .

It isn’t a huge boost but the base iPad has remained popular for a long time and this helps it keep pace with rivals, even if it is topped by the rest of Apple’s tablet line. A slightly reduced price will only help too, with the new iPad starting at a price of £319. It’s available to pre-order from today and goes on sale next week.

Speaking of the rest of the iPad line, the mini has been given a significant shakeup in the form of some iPad Air-esque upgrades. The new iPad mini has a new 8.3in display – ditching the home button so it can stay the same footprint despite the larger panel. It’s a Liquid Retina display with TrueTone, 500 nits of brightness and low reflectivity.

The new tablet comes with the new A15 Bionic, giving it a 40 per cent CPU performance boost and 80 per cent GPU boost. Like the iPad Air and iPad Pro, you get USB-C with the iPad mini as well as 5G – neither of which are available with the new iPad, which sticks with Lightning and 4G.

The iPad mini's cameras have gotten a shot in the arm front and back too. The rear camera is now 12MP with TrueTone flash and is capable of 4K video. While the selfie camera is a 12MP ultrawide, with Center Stage. The speakers have also been supercharged with stereo audio in landscape mode.

There’s a range of new slim Smart Folio covers for Apple’s smallest tablet as well as compatibility with the 2nd Gen Apple Pencil – which also magnetically attaches to the device’s side.

The new iPad mini looks mightily impressive; it's now a shrunken down version of the excellent iPad Air. However, the price could be the off-putting factor for many. The new tablet starts at £479, with pre-orders starting today and a release date next week.

Apple holds event to introduce new iPhones, iPads and other gadgets.

This year’s upgrades are expected to be modest compared with last year’s introduction of the iPhone 12.

apple iphone presentation

By Brian X. Chen and Kellen Browning

It’s that time of the year again, when Apple unveils its latest gadgets ahead of the holiday season.

On Tuesday, the iPhone maker is holding its annual product event — virtually, because of the coronavirus pandemic — and present its newest lineup. The new products — including iPhones and Apple Watch — will have a strong focus on screens, in an era when people are increasingly glued to them .

The company started broadcasting a video presentation at 10 a.m. Pacific time to show new iPhones with improved displays and Apple Watches with slightly larger screens, according to people briefed on the event, who were not authorized to speak publicly about the products. Apple declined to comment.

The aesthetic of the new iPhones will closely resemble that of last year’s models , the people said. The biggest change will be to the screen, which will have what is known as a higher “refresh rate” that will make videos and motion look smoother. The camera will also be improved, the people said.

The new Apple Watch will also look similar to last year’s models but will include slightly larger displays that can show more pixels, the people briefed on the products said. That will make images and text shown on the watch face look more compelling.

All told, this year’s upgrades are expected to be modest compared with last year’s introduction of the iPhone 12, which had an overhauled design and support for 5G, the new, faster cellular technology . That generation of iPhones helped double Apple’s profits in recent quarters.

Apple is announcing its newest products against a backdrop of antitrust and privacy concerns.

On Monday, the company issued emergency software updates after security researchers uncovered a flaw that allows highly invasive spyware from Israel’s NSO Group infect people’s Apple devices without so much as a click.

Last week, a federal judge ruled that Apple was not engaging in monopolistic behavior as part of a verdict in an antitrust lawsuit brought by Epic Games , the maker of the popular game Fortnite. But she also told Apple that it had to allow app developers to communicate with their customers and advertise payment methods outside the App Store, which would let developers dodge Apple’s commission.

Apple had already agreed to several concessions to app makers in recent weeks and also said it would pay $100 million as part of a settlement with small app developers . It is expected to appeal the judge’s decision.

Apple also said this month that it would postpone a planned feature aimed at cracking down on images of child sexual abuse on iPhones after privacy advocates said the move could lead to increased digital surveillance.

Apple Event 2024: iPhone 16, Apple Intelligence and all the other expected ‘Glowtime’ reveals

Apple’s big iphone 16 lineup reveal will also be packed with an ai showcase and potential airpods, and apple watch news.

As ever, additional rumors have popped up in the days leading up to the event. Among the more interesting of recent vintage (all Apple Watch-related): The Apple Watch Series 10’s blood pressure monitoring is not coming to the Watch Ultra 2, and there are limited Apple Intelligence features for the Watch, though it will be baked into a future fitness coach-style feature . Both models are reportedly getting that sleep apnea feature, though it likely won’t be available at launch .

Apple will reveal the iPhone 16 at its September 9 “It’s Glowtime” event; this much we can tell you for certain. But Apple doesn’t invite us to fly across the country for a single product — not to mention booking a hotel room on the 49ers opening day. Football aside, the timing of the annual event is important, as it’s one last major opportunity to announce a bunch of hardware ahead of the holidays.

The livestream kicks off on Monday at 10 a.m. PT . The invites dropped last week with the “Glowtime” tagline and a color scheme to match. Apple loves to sprinkle small hints into these graphics, and this one appears more on the nose than most.

Apple Intelligence and Siri

Back at WWDC in June , Apple finally revealed its approach to generative AI. The offering is an extremely Apple approach, right down to the name — Apple Intelligence — which happily hijacks the familiar AI initialism. The “small model” method is emblematic of the company in the sense that it’s trained on limited data relevant to improving the user experience.

That’s a marked difference between it and much larger “black box” models like OpenAI’s and Google’s Gemini . The efficacy of the approach remains to be seen, as we wait for Apple Intelligence’s wider release. It will almost certainly be a work in progress, as — at the very least — all generative AI is, at the end of the day.

The answer to how this all ties into “Glowtime” can be found in Siri. In June, Apple announced a much-needed glow-up for the O.G. smart assistant . Along with generative AI models and better app integration, the company revealed an updated interface. Gone is the familiar colorful Siri circle, swapped out for a glowing border that surrounds the display when Siri is listening/processing.

Out of every iPhone ever launched, two models will be able to run Apple Intelligence : the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. According to the company, that’s due to limitations with older chips. Given that non-Pro iPhone 15 models are effectively running the iPhone 14 Pro’s chipset, Apple can credibly make the argument that only one of its chips so far was built with Apple Intelligence in mind. You can decide for yourself whether you think the exclusion of the iPhone 15 is entirely a hardware matter.

With all of this in mind, the event is the perfect chance to announce that Apple Intelligence will be available across the new iPhone line. But Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman warns that Apple Intelligence delays could affect the iPhone 16’s bottom line .

iPhone 16, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to feature the thinnest bezels on a smartphone 🔥 pic.twitter.com/rK9LEugcb1 — Apple Hub (@theapplehub) September 1, 2024

We’re heading toward the promise of true edge-to-edge displays millimeter by millimeter. According to one recent leak, the iPhone 16 Pro Max may get an even larger display, courtesy of smaller bezels, moving from 1.5mm to 1.4mm. So, what’s a few fractions of a millimeter between friends? A lot when you’re talking about a total size of under 2mm, turns out.

That will reportedly bump the Pro Max’s screen size from 6.69 to 6.86 inches, without increasing the device’s overall footprint by some unwieldy amount. The iPhone 15 Pro Max is already a big phone. The iPhone 16 Pro, meanwhile, is said to be making the leap from 6.12 to 6.27 inches.

Camera improvements are a no-brainer for annual updates. The most interesting of the bunch is a new glass molded lens that is thinner and lighter, while dramatically increasing optical zoom capabilities. Optical zoom capabilities are worth paying attention to, as they don’t suffer from the same sort of image degradation issues as their digital counterpart.

pic.twitter.com/GiIWNkXcI8 — Sonny Dickson (@SonnyDickson) April 4, 2024

Leaked dummy models from early in the year give us a rough idea of each model’s design. Most notable on the 16 and 16 Plus is the shift from a diagonal to a vertical camera setup. The models, which are designed for third parties to get a jumpstart on accessories, feature the addition of a new “Capture” button across the line. The new feature is designed to provide quick access to different camera capabilities.

The most welcome change, however, may be bigger batteries . Screen and camera improvements are all well and good, but battery life remains a struggle. This particular report could use more substantiating, so take that with an even larger grain of salt than usual. Additional reports , meanwhile, have pointed to Apple making battery replacements more accessible for users. Given that the company has begun offering home repair options as more governments and localities pass right-to-repair laws, this one certainly tracks.

The Pro models are also expected to gain Wi-Fi 7, which would be a big boon for the latest wireless standard.

Apple Watch Series 10/Ultra 3

five color options for Apple watch series 9

As hard as it is to believe, the Apple Watch turns 10 this year. They grow up so quickly. Apple made a big splash with the iPhone X, so it follows that it’d have something similar planned for the Apple Watch Series 10 (Series X?). Earlier rumors pointing to a significant redesign have cooled in recent months, making way for a familiar design with a larger display, bumping up to 45mm and 49mm models. The new watch should also be slimmer than its predecessor — something especially important when discussing a watch.

Like the iPhone 16, the Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3 should get a new processor — the S10, one imagines. That could mean that additional AI functionality isn’t far out. A glucose monitor is the most exciting rumored addition. Sleep apnea detection is also rumored for the device, but as Bloomberg notes , Apple’s legal woes with Masimo may well trip up that feature.

A long-awaited update to the budget Apple Watch SE with a plastic body could also appear.

Stay with me on this one . Apple is reportedly announcing two versions of the AirPods 4. The cheaper model will replace the still-available AirPods 2, and the more premium version will replace the AirPods 3. Still with me? The more premium model is set to blur the line between it and the AirPods Pro, by adding Active Noise Cancelation and Find My features. All of the models should also finally ditch Lightning for USB-C, as the company transitions its products to comply with EU mandates .

So, how will Apple maintain a clear line between the mid-tier and Pro pods? We’ll have to wait on the answer to that one, as we’re not expecting new AirPods Pro. We may, however, finally get the over-ear AirPods Max 2, four years after the original.

This one is a big maybe. Recent reporting suggests that Apple will hold off on announcing M4 macs until November. Supply chain issues have been dictating the Mac’s release calendar ever since the pandemic. A big, USB-A-less version of the Mac Mini is said to be arriving before the end of the year, along with a new iMac and MacBook Pro.

Steve jobs’ surprise iphone reveal is still a presentation classic.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - JANUARY 9: Apple CEO Steve Jobs holds up the new iPhone that was introduced at ... [+] Macworld on January 9, 2007 in San Francisco, California. (Photo by David Paul Morris/Getty Images)

Apple’s first iPhone went on sale 15 years ago this week. Reporters who were in the auditorium when Steve Jobs took the stage five months earlier still recall the presentation that triggered the smartphone revolution.

Specifically, most people remember one moment that stood out in the 90-minute product launch. Jobs opened the presentation by announcing that Apple would introduce three new products. Jobs, a “master showman” according to CNET, then surprised the audience with the big reveal—the three products were all bundled in one device that would “revolutionize the phone.”

Fifteen years later, Jobs’ surprise reveal still holds up as one of the best presentations ever. The iPhone presentation became an instant classic for three reasons.

Use the Rule of Three

Steve Jobs understood the rule of three, a critical concept in communication theory. The rule simply states that people can recall a list of three points or three messages fairly easily. As the list expands, however, people have a harder remembering the entire list. Three seems to be the magic number.

So Jobs announced three new products. The first, he said, was a widescreen iPod with touch controls. “The second is a revolutionary mobile phone,” Jobs continued. “And the third is a breakthrough internet communications device.”

Best Travel Insurance Companies

Best covid-19 travel insurance plans.

To add further emphasis, Jobs repeated the list of three products three times: “So three things: a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communications device. An iPod, a phone, an internet communicator…”

What happened next was pure presentation genius.

Break a Pattern

Jobs often broke up presentations into three parts or focused on three benefits/features of a product. So it wasn’t unusual for Jobs to tease the audience by introducing three new devices. But Jobs, an exceptional communicator, also knew that breaking a pattern is a sure attention-getter.

The human brain cannot ignore “novelty,” something new and surprising. And breaking a pattern that audiences are expecting is an example of creating a novel presentation.

After Jobs repeated the list of new devices several times, he broke the pattern and said, “An iPod, a phone—are you getting it? These are not three separate devices. This is one device. And we are calling it iPhone,” Jobs finally revealed.

The audience erupted in cheers, partly due to their excitement over seeing a completely new product and because they had fallen for the act. They were ready to see three devices but even more thrilled to see the pattern broken.

Practice the Delivery

Jobs didn’t leave anything to chance. He practiced—a lot.

Former Apple executives who attended Jobs’ rehearsals for the iPhone launch told me that Jobs did not just review slides. He practiced the presentation like an actor prepares for a theatrical performance. Jobs spent days rehearsing every aspect of the presentation—from how he delivered his lines to how he used hand gestures to emphasize the main points.

Memorable business presentations require creativity, but the work is worth it. Jobs made presentations look effortless because he put a lot of effort into making them great.

PRESS RELEASE

A huge leap forward for iPhone with a gorgeous new design featuring a durable, color-infused back glass and new contoured edge; the Dynamic Island; a 48MP Main camera with 2x Telephoto; and USB‑C

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today announced iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, featuring an industry-first color-infused back glass with a stunning, textured matte finish, and a new contoured edge on the aluminum enclosure. Both models feature the Dynamic Island, and an advanced camera system designed to help users take fantastic photos of everyday moments in their lives. A powerful 48MP Main camera enables super-high-resolution photos and a new 2x Telephoto option to give users a total of three optical zoom levels — like having a third camera. The iPhone 15 lineup also introduces the next generation of portraits, making it easier to capture portraits with great detail and low-light performance. Building on Apple’s innovative satellite infrastructure, Roadside Assistance via satellite can connect users to AAA if they have car trouble while off the grid. With A16 Bionic for powerful, proven performance; a USB‑C connector; Precision Finding for Find My friends; and industry-leading durability features, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus represent a huge leap forward.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will be available in five stunning new colors: pink, yellow, green, blue, and black. Pre-orders begin Friday, September 15, with availability beginning Friday, September 22.

“iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus represent a huge leap forward with exciting camera innovations that inspire creativity, the intuitive Dynamic Island, and features like Roadside Assistance via satellite that make a real difference in users’ lives,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing. “We’re also pushing the power of computational photography to new levels this year with a 48MP Main camera featuring a new 24MP default for super-high-resolution photos, a new 2x Telephoto option, and next-generation portraits.”

Available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes, 1 iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature the Dynamic Island, an innovative way to interact with important alerts and Live Activities. The elegant experience fluidly expands and adapts so users can see the next direction in Maps; easily control music; and, with third-party app integrations, get real-time updates on food delivery, ride sharing, sports scores, travel plans, and more. The Super Retina XDR display is great for watching content, streaming Apple Fitness+ workouts, and playing games. Peak HDR brightness now reaches up to 1600 nits so HDR photos and videos look better than ever. And when it is sunny, peak outdoor brightness reaches up to 2000 nits — twice as bright as the previous generation.

Both models feature a sophisticated new look that’s built to last. For the first time in a smartphone, color is infused throughout the back glass, creating five beautiful colors. The back glass is strengthened with an optimized dual-ion exchange process before being polished with nanocrystalline particles and etched to create a luxurious, textured matte finish. A new contoured edge on the aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure feels even nicer in users’ hands, and the Ceramic Shield front cover continues to be tougher than any other smartphone glass. With a water- and dust-resistant design 2 and industry-leading durability features, iPhone lasts and holds its value longer than any other smartphone. Plus, the internal design provides powerful sustained performance, while improving ease and affordability of repairs.

The advanced camera system on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus helps users capture everyday moments and cherished memories. A 48MP Main camera shoots sharp photos and videos while capturing fine details, with a quad-pixel sensor and 100 percent Focus Pixels for fast autofocus. Using the power of computational photography, the Main camera gives users a new 24MP super-high-resolution default, offering incredible image quality at a practical file size ideal for storing and sharing. By intelligently integrating hardware and software, an additional 2x Telephoto option gives users three optical-quality zoom levels — 0.5x, 1x, 2x — for the first time on an iPhone dual-camera system.

Next-generation portraits on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature sharper detail, more vivid colors, and improved low-light performance. For the first time, users can take portraits without having to switch to Portrait mode. When there’s a person, dog, or cat in the frame, or when a user taps to focus, iPhone automatically captures depth information, so users can turn photos into stunning portraits later in the Photos app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. For greater creative control, users can also adjust the focus point after the photo has been taken. Shooting at night gets better with improvements to Night mode, including sharper details and more vivid colors. When lighting is bright or uneven, new Smart HDR captures subjects and the background with more true-to-life renderings of skin tones, while ensuring photos have brighter highlights, richer midtones, and deeper shadows when viewed in the Photos app. This advanced HDR rendering is also available to third-party apps, so images can look even better when shared online. These improvements benefit the 48MP Main camera, Ultra Wide camera, and TrueDepth front camera.

The fast and efficient A16 Bionic chip brings proven performance to iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, powering the Dynamic Island, computational photography capabilities, and more. With two high-performance cores that use 20 percent less power and four high-efficiency cores, the 6-core CPU is faster than the previous generation and easily handles intensive tasks while delivering extraordinary battery life. The 5-core GPU has 50 percent more memory bandwidth for smooth graphics when streaming videos and playing games. A new 16-core Neural Engine is capable of nearly 17 trillion operations per second, enabling even faster machine learning computations for features like Live Voicemail transcriptions in iOS 17 and third-party app experiences — all while protecting critical privacy and security features using the Secure Enclave.

The iPhone 15 lineup offers critical safety capabilities to provide assistance when it matters most, including Crash Detection 3 and Emergency SOS via satellite. 4 Currently available in 14 countries and regions on three continents, Emergency SOS via satellite has made a significant impact in users’ lives. This groundbreaking safety service will come to Spain and Switzerland later this month.

Building on this innovative satellite infrastructure, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus introduce Roadside Assistance via satellite. Beginning in the U.S., when a user has car trouble and cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are not available, they can now connect to AAA, the country’s largest roadside assistance provider. 5 An intuitive interface, including a short questionnaire to capture important details, will transmit the information via satellite so AAA can message with the user directly and dispatch help to their exact location. Access to Roadside Assistance via satellite will be included for free for two years. Service is covered according to AAA membership, but is also available separately for nonmembers. 6

The iPhone 15 lineup offers convenient new ways to charge, find friends in busy places, and stay connected while traveling. Both models use a USB‑C connector, a universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data, allowing the same cable to charge iPhone, Mac, iPad, and the updated AirPods Pro (2nd generation). Users can also charge AirPods or Apple Watch directly from iPhone with the USB‑C connector. 7 Both models support MagSafe and future Qi2 chargers for wireless charging.

Both models feature the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, enabling two iPhone devices with this chip to connect at three times the range as before. This opens up a new way to use Precision Finding for Find My friends, so iPhone 15 users can share their location and find each other, even in crowds. Precision Finding is built with the same privacy protections that users have come to trust in Find My. 8

iPhone 15 models continue to deliver a high-quality, superfast 5G experience 9 and improved audio quality on phone calls, including those made on FaceTime or third-party apps. Sound quality gets even better when users select Voice Isolation to come through loud and clear, even if they are somewhere noisy.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have eSIM, a more convenient and secure alternative to a physical SIM card, with support from more than 295 carriers. When traveling the world, users can stay connected through affordable international roaming plans from their existing carrier, or purchase prepaid eSIM plans in over 50 countries and regions, including Australia, Italy, Thailand, and more.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature iOS 17, 10 making iPhone even more personal and intuitive with new capabilities:

iOS 17 delivers many more updates, including Journal, 11 a new app that helps iPhone users reflect and practice gratitude through journaling; improvements to autocorrect and Dictation; greater protection for Private Browsing in Safari; password and passkey sharing with iCloud Keychain; pet recognition in Photos; and much more.

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are designed with the environment in mind. As Apple continues to work toward its 2030 goal of making every product carbon neutral — from design to manufacturing to customer use — the company is prioritizing clean electricity across the entire supply chain and designing products with recycled and other low-carbon materials. iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus now use even more recycled content, with 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled copper in the main logic board, copper wire in the Taptic Engine, and copper foil in the inductive charger in MagSafe — all firsts for iPhone. Both models also include 75 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 percent recycled gold in the USB‑C connector as well as the gold plating and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. The iPhone 15 lineup meets Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency and is free of mercury, PVC, and beryllium. Over 99 percent of the packaging is fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal of completely removing plastic from its packaging by 2025.

To further reduce impact on the planet, Apple will no longer use leather in any new Apple products, including iPhone accessories. Apple is introducing a new FineWoven Case with MagSafe and FineWoven Wallet with MagSafe, made from a durable and elegant microtwill with a soft, suedelike feel. The material is made from 68 percent post-consumer recycled content and has significantly lower carbon emissions compared to leather.
