Magdalena Kozena as Idamante in a dress rehearsal for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Idomeneo; the production was part of the 2006 Salzburg (Austria) Festival.

music festival , usually a series of performances at a particular place and inspired by a unifying theme, such as national music , modern music, or the promotion of a prominent composer’s works. It may also take the form of a competition for performers or composers.

Series of religious services associated with a given feast early established the idea of the music festival in the church. The term festival in its modern sense, however, was first used in England . The Festival of the Sons of the Clergy, originally an annual charity sermon, was first given at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London , in 1655; it took on a musical character in 1698. The famed Three Choirs Festival was established in 1724 (an earlier form existed in 1715) and continues to take place annually and in rotation at the cathedral cities of Gloucester, Worcester, and Hereford. Harp festivals were held in Ireland toward the end of the 18th century.

Festivals of secular music in England came into being in the 18th century; the first devoted to George Frideric Handel was held in 1784 in Westminster Abbey , London. Handel festivals continued almost without interruption well into the 20th century, including the triennial Handel Festivals held at the Crystal Palace , near London, from 1857 until the building burned in 1936. The Birmingham Festival (1768, triennial from 1769 until 1912) was originally devoted to Handel’s music but was extended to include that of other composers in the 1800s. During the 18th and 19th centuries, festivals, mostly choral, were developed in various cities in England; they include the Leeds Festival (triennial). The Glyndebourne Festival (for opera) was established in 1934 in Sussex, and the Edinburgh International Festival of Music and Drama was inaugurated in 1947; the Cheltenham Festival, initiated in 1945, is devoted to modern music.

In the United States , several large-scale choral festivals on the English model were held in the 19th century. In 1869 and 1872 the celebrated bandmaster Patrick Gilmore organized two Peace Jubilee festivals, featuring choirs of 20,000 and orchestras of 1,000, plus artillery firing and bells. Annual chamber-music festivals, performing specially commissioned works, were established by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge (Pittsfield, Mass., 1918), and more specialized ones followed in the 20th century. In 1937 the conductor Serge Koussevitzky inaugurated the Berkshire Festival at Tanglewood, near Lenox, Mass. The annual Newport , R.I., jazz festival (1954) also became prominent. Many rock-music festivals were held in the 1960s and ’70s. In Puerto Rico the Spanish cellist Pablo Casals established a noted festival in 1957. Other Latin-American festivals have been held in Caracas, Venez.; Santiago , Chile; and Buenos Aires , Arg.

Numerous festivals were held annually in German cities during the 19th century. The Bayreuth Festival was inaugurated by the German composer Richard Wagner in 1876 to present his operas and music dramas in a specially built opera house. In Salzburg, Austria, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s birthplace, the first Mozart festival was held in 1877. Later including works by many composers, it became an annual summer event from 1920. Especially important among European opera festivals is that held in Munich (established 1901), devoted mainly to the work of Mozart, Richard Strauss , and Wagner. Other prominent European festivals include the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence Musical May), held annually from 1933; the Spoleto , Italy , festival, inaugurated by the composer Gian Carlo Menotti (1958); and the festivals held at Besançon and Aix-en-Provence , Fr., from 1948. Adventurous modern works, including electronic music , are heard each summer at the Darmstadt, Ger., festivals (1946).

The International Society for Contemporary Music promotes modern works of novel nature; formed in 1922, it has held summer festivals in various European and U.S. cities. The first festival of music and drama at Ōsaka , Japan , was held in 1958.

Contests of artistic skill, including music, are ancient; musical competitions were part of the 6th-century- bc Pythian Games at Delphi . The eisteddfod in Wales—originally a festival for bards (poet-singers), but now including other arts—had its beginnings in the 12th century or earlier, and in the 12th century the troubadours held musical competitions, the puys, at Puy Notre Dame, near Saumur, in France. The song contest organized by the Meistersingers at Wartburg, Ger., dates from the 13th century.

In 18th-century England local singing competitions were held by groups of singers at taverns. In the 19th century, singing and brass-band competitions between amateur musicians became popular and were adjudicated by prominent figures.

In the United States in 1790, singers from Dorchester and Stoughton, Mass., competed at Dorchester. Similar amateur activity among students was later encouraged; and in the 20th century, band , choral, and orchestral competitions among schools and colleges were organized on a large scale.

In the 20th century a new form of international competition was organized to promote the careers of professional performers. Such competition festivals include the Chopin International Competition for Pianists (begun 1927, Warsaw); the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium prize for violinists, pianists, and composers (begun 1937, Brussels); and the Tchaikovsky competition for pianists, violinists, and cellists (begun 1958, Moscow).

The benefits of landing a music festival slot

Posted by Daniel Hodson (Updated: Wednesday, March 24, 2021)

What is a music festival

A music festival is an organized event that features live performances from different bands and artists, often from similar genres. It is traditionally held outdoors in a large and spacious area jam-packed with people who share the same love and passion for music, with smaller festivals commonly indoors. Some music festivals are organized for the purpose of raising funds for a charitable cause, some are for up and coming bands and artists wanting to break further into the music scene, and others host international acts to hundreds of thousands of fans.

A driver for exposure

Music festivals typically have higher attendance than your average show, with fans coming from a variety of places to see their favorite artists perform live in one place. For emerging artists, this serves as a great avenue to showcase their talents, be exposed to a larger crowd, gather new fans, and eventually get to the next step in their career. This can serve as an anchor to start a buzz around a band, and you never know who’s watching! There are many bands and artists who’s big break was achieved off the back of a strong live performance.

Draws music lovers together

Whether its artists socialising with other bands and fans, or even fans meeting fellow fans, it all boils down to a mutual love for music. It’s about bringing people together with a common goal to enjoy and celebrate music. Music festivals unite; providing a fun environment, and a chance to network.

Get heard by the right person

Landing the opportunity to perform at a music festival doesn’t come easily! The promoter for the event needs to know you can bring value to their event. So, the bigger the festival, the bigger the act needs to be to secure a slot. The more work you put into climbing the ladder, the more fans you’ll gain, and in turn, demand for your live performance. The majority of bigger festivals are swarming with music industry professionals and A&R representatives, providing you and your music with a rare chance to truly showcase what you’re about.

Help grow your fan base

As previously mentioned, music festivals are often organised with a genre theme in mind, so if you’re playing one, chances are the other bands are from a similar cut to you. This can be extra beneficial to a breakthrough artist, as one good performance could be the turning point in generating a lot of new fans. This in turn results in more sales and momentum for the band to succeed.

Become better artists

Going to a music festival can be an inspirational experience, seeing how the pro’s play, carry themselves on stage and interact with the crowd. This can be a motivational factor for bands and artists at any level, encouraging the desire to strive to become better entertainers and musicians.

A chance of meeting other artists and build connections

Bands and artists get the opportunity to build friendship with other artists whom they might want to collaborate with in the future. Whether this be a tour, a feature, or anything in between! The music industry can be tough, but it is also a playground for networking with like-minded individuals.  These are a few of the prime advantages for a band or artist when playing a music festival. There is no better place in the world to network with those in the music industry on a face-to-face basis, and with music festivals being the most sought after music events in the world, they provide the best live platform for developing a new and loyal fanbase.

Use these criteria for evaluating music performances:

Pay attention to their emotions, intonation, and body language.
Here you need to decide whether they played or sang the right notes, follow the rhythm, and make transitions.
Think about how the music is relevant to the time period, nationality, and genre they represent. Evaluate the setting, costumes, and other details.
Maybe they talked when it wasn’t necessary, or perhaps someone interrupted the performance. Try to notice everything relevant.
This question involves a subjective opinion, but it’s better to try to answer it as objectively as possible.

Now all you need to do is choose a topic and get down to writing!

✍️ Music Essay: How to Write

So, you have chosen your essay title. Now it’s time to start writing! But before you begin, read the sections below and learn how to organize your work.

How to Describe Music in Writing

You might think that writing about music is like dancing about architecture. Well, it is not an easy task, but we know how to cope with it.

Follow these tips while writing:

  • Make a comparison.  Explain which characteristics of a piece remind you or are identical to those of another one. It’s better to avoid comparing music from different composers in this case. Instead, evaluate and analyze two musical pieces from the same composer.
  • Describe the melody and dynamics.  You may want to use musical terms to show your knowledge and proficiency. Define the genre and what kind of instruments and tones are used.
  • Explain how it makes you feel.  You can use basic human emotions to describe the feelings of a listener. For example, it can be anger, tenderness, irritation, excitement, or nostalgia.
  • Use metaphorical language.  You may try using your imagination to create analogies. Be careful not to make your metaphors overcomplicated, as it may confuse the readers.

Essays about Music: Descriptive Words

Do you want your essay on music to be interesting and expressive? Then you may want to use descriptive vocabulary. Here are some of the terms that you can use in your essay to make it sound more professional:

  • Tempo is the “speed” of music. There are fixed expressions to define tempo—for example, largo, moderate, or presto. You can also describe how fast the music feels.
  • Timbre is the term that evaluates the “color” of music. Even if two instruments play the same note of the same volume, the sound is still different. This is how you can notice the color of the tone. For example, gentle, clear, heavy, or warm can be the adjectives to describe timbre.
  • Dynamics define the volume levels of music. The volume can be the same all the time, for example loud or soft. If the volume of music changes, you can use such expressions as “gradually gets louder” “or suddenly becomes soft.”
  • Harmony characterizes how all the notes and chords sound together. The sequence of chords—chord progression—defines how satisfying the melody is for the listener. For example, if the transitions are smooth, you can use such words as “relaxed” or “warm.”

Music Essay Outline

Like any other assignment, writing about music requires a proper essay outline that will guide you through the writing. The following sections will help you with that.

Before you start, here are some tips that will help you prepare for writing:

  • Do some prior research. Try to learn as much as possible about the piece you will be writing about. It’s also helpful to listen to the music several times with headphones to notice more details.
  • Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Consult your instructor if you’re unsure about your topic or the piece you have chosen.
  • Choose the topic that you like. If you’re passionate about a subject, it is always easier to write about it. Who said that homework could not be interesting?
  • Follow the recommendations that your instructor gives. It includes word limit, formatting style, deadline, and essay type.

Music Essay Introduction

The introduction is the section where you come up with a brief explanation of the topic. You may start it with a quotation, definition, or short statement that catches your reader’s attention and leads them to the essay subject.

A thesis statement is usually the last sentence of the introduction that defines the content of body paragraphs. It needs to be specific and not longer than two sentences. If you decide to shift the focus of your essay while writing, it’s crucial to change your thesis too.

Different types of essays require different thesis statements. Let’s take a closer look:

Essay typeExplanationThesis example
You need to evaluate an issue or idea. It can be a review of a concert or music piece. Pink Floyd’s use of multimedia in enriched the listener’s experience and created additional meanings.
Here you need to explain an idea, problem, or opinion to your readers. Modern rap performers influence behavioral patterns among teenagers through their lyrics and visuals.
Your aim is to introduce a claim and justify it by using evidence. David Bowie became one of the most significant musicians of the 20 century by mastering various music genres.

Music Essay Body

Your essay’s body is the most significant part of your writing. Here, you provide evidence and explanations of your claims.

The typical body paragraph structure includes:

  • A topic sentence explaining the argument for a particular paragraph.
  • An introduction to the evidence you gathered to support an argument.
  • Quotes and facts (don’t forget about proper citation!) and their explanation.
  • A connection between the evidence and the essay topic.
  • Paragraph transitions  leading your reader to the next section.

Topic Sentence about Music

Topic sentences can be used as a roadmap to writing your essay. Each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence that defines what the paragraph is about. It introduces the argument or main thought that will be explained. It’s also connected with the thesis statement.

It’s essential to make your thesis easy to understand, so it’s better not to overcomplicate it. For example, here’s an unsuccessful topic sentence with unnecessary words:

As stated above, the guitar is an essential musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Instead, you can formulate it like this:

The guitar is the most iconic musical instrument in rock music that defines how it sounds.

Music Essay Conclusion

When writing a conclusion for your essay on music, you can use the following structure:

  • Summarize the text in a few sentences.
  • Review the key points of your paper.
  • Paraphrase the thesis.

To make your essay conclusion more effective, avoid the following:

. Try to and analyze it, and add some information from the body paragraphs.
You don’t have to fully paraphrase your thesis statement. However, you can mirror it in some way.
It’s like finishing a movie with an unsolved problem. It’s also better to avoid rhetorical questions as they are not specific enough.
You can use quotes in the introduction or body paragraphs, but make sure to use only your own words in the conclusion. Otherwise, the readers might think you don’t have a personal opinion on the topic.

Writing An Essay On Music Thematic: 5 Key Elements

essay on music

Essays about music can be rather hard if you’d rather play music and express your emotions through it rather than share them and your opinions in written form. Those who struggle with such tasks usually address EssayWritingService.com to work on engaging projects and practice. But what if you have to write it by yourself?

Music is a massive subject, with myriad genres, instruments, theoretical, and cultural facets to examine in an essay. The complexity of the subject is intimidating to the uninitiated.

That’s why some writers crafting content on music may find a college essay writing service to be of use at some point in their writing process.

In this article, we’ll assess several key elements of an essay on a musical theme. The processes we’ll cover include analysis, technical work, comparative studies, and more.

We’ll also discuss some great music essay topics if you’re stuck for ideas; remember that a hypothesis is the most crucial element of any essay. Hopefully, the elements here will find a happy home in your music essay and help you get a top mark.

1) Writing about music that you love:

Whether it’s disco or desert-rock, EDM or classical, if you choose a genre or subject you love, the process of writing becomes much easier. All those internal references and resonances can come out in an essay and help demonstrate how much of an expert you are on your theme of choice.

2) Writing technically and analytically:

Essays cannot simply describe a song or a piece of music. While the phenomenological approach can be useful in certain essays, it shouldn’t make up the bulk of your essay. Writing analytically about music also does not have to mean talking chords, scales, and tunings. Analysis can be related to a corollary, like the means of publishing, the types of audience, the social scenes involved, and the impact on culture or music theory.

Music analysis is a much more technical skill. Remember that when you’re writing an essay, you only really need to fulfil the criteria set out in the mark scheme. For a music essay, this mark scheme will likely sound like this “[the student] evaluates music by systemically deconstructing the score, determining any manipulations, relationships, elements, and compositional devices being used, and communicating judgements on these in a detailed and substantiated manner”.

That’s not likely a verbatim extract from your personal mark scheme, but it is a close approximation of those for song analysis essays. Be sure to double-check and work from your own mark scheme.

The general gist however is clear: use your music knowledge, evaluate what you hear and present it in a way that is both detailed and backed up by sources and citations – remember to cite the piece itself, either by the bar or the time in the song.

3) Making comparisons:

In the previous section, we talked about the use of musical knowledge and how judgements must be made in a detailed way. One method of judgement is the comparison; you can take time in your essay writing process to determine whether an element of the composition is related in some way to an element in another piece. What interesting lines of flight can you draw?

4) Choosing a good topic:

Should you be writing a dissertation, you will have to choose your own subject and delineate it in a way that shows you have found some novelty in the field. If you are looking for examples of topics, you can always dive through Wikipedia, it’s a great place to find connections between subjects and ideas.

Another way of coming up with a thesis and topics is to study your music collection. Go with something that interests you, or go with something you dislike and try to explain why you think it is such a poor showing. When doing the latter, remember that critique itself is an art form that shouldn’t be watered down into blunt punches and crass language.

5) Be an active participant:

When we usually listen to music, we’re doing so in a passive sense. Our ears are open for the melodies and harmonies to fall into, but are we actually listening? We may very well be enjoying the music, but unfortunately, enjoyment won’t get top marks. In order to write an essay about music we need to deconstruct it, and in order to do that we must listen very actively and attentively.

A tried and tested method for doing this is to select one musical element, for example, pitch or timbre, and listen to the entire song focusing solely on that aspect. Then, as you can surely guess, do the same with other aspects. Write down notes on everything that you notice. Once you’ve noted through all the relevant elements , you’ll have a lot of notes to work with and a great familiarity with the piece.

In summary, writing a solid essay on music requires attentive listening, knowledge of musical elements, and the ability to put into words the sensations and feelings evoked when listening to the piece. These skills can only be cultivated through practice and patience – it takes a certain amount of time to listen to each piece of music. So, start early and listen well.

Each and every festival is celebrated uniquely in different ways according to the various rituals and beliefs. Each festival has its own history, legend and significance of the celebration. Festivals bring bonding, love, cross-cultural exchange and happiness among people.

National Festivals

Festivals and fairs are significant parts of Indian cultural life. Some of the festivals are celebrated at a national level, whereas others are at a regional level. National festivals such as Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated by people of all religions across the entire nation. These festivals fill us with great pride and remind us of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives to make India independent and free from British rule. The whole nation unites together to celebrate these festivals and the spirit of togetherness, patriotism and nationalism can be found everywhere.

Religious Festivals

There are some religious festivals which are celebrated as a whole by different communities.

These include Diwali, Dussehra, Rakhsha Bandhan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Zuha, Christmas, Ganesh Chaturthi, etc., which are accompanied by religious rituals of one kind or the other. These traditional festivals have two aspects. One is worship which is performed according to specific religious norms. Another is composite culture, as the members of any community can participate in and celebrate these religious festivals. Thus, our festivals represent unity and encourage social bonding.

Seasonal Festivals

In India, most festivals are seasonal in nature. They announce the change in the season and mark the harvesting seasons. All the seasonal festivals are celebrated during two harvesting seasons, Kharif and Rabi. Besides, spring is another period of seasonal festivals. In Punjab, the Lohri festival indicates the harvesting of the winter crop. Pongal, Bihu and Onam celebrations mark the harvesting of paddy crops. Similarly, Holi and Baisakhi are celebrated to mark the harvesting of new rabi crops. Thus, these festivals symbolise the arrival of joy and wealth to farmers’ lives.

It is said that the “Greatness of a culture can be found in its festivals”. India has proved this saying as a variety of festivals are celebrated with full joy and happiness across the country. Different cultures and religions get tied together in bonds of love with invisible threads of celebrations. That’s why India is also known for unity in cultural diversity. Festivals teach us how to fight evil and falsehood and establish the truth. The festivals are marked by fervour, hope, and prayers for a better tomorrow.

632 Music Essay Topics & Samples

The scholarly analysis of musical history, theory, and cultural aspects of music is called musicology. If you are studying this subject, our team has prepared 507 amazing topics about music for your paper.

📑 Aspects to Cover in a Music Essay

🏆 best topics about music, 👍 good music topics for research papers, 🎓 simple & easy music essay topics, 📌 unique music topics for essays, ⭐ interesting music topics to write about, 🥇 insightful music titles for essays, ❓ music essay questions.

You can write about many different types of music, ranging from classical arrangements of Mozart and Beethoven to pop compositions made via computers. Look through our music essay examples to find the best idea!

Whether you understand the subtleties of terminology or are taking a course to begin your journey, writing a music essay requires more than the knowledge of various musical pieces.

Tackling different topics, ranging from contemporary to classical music, is possible if you can explain a few cornerstone moments to your readers. To begin your essay, make sure to:

  • Research your assigned piece in different ways, from listening to reading about it;
  • Immerse yourself in the material;
  • Search for additional insights by watching live performances when possible.

These actions ensure that you have a good grasp of your material from different sources. Creating an outline before beginning to write will also save you time, as you will gain a better understanding of the topic.

Finally, you can get music essay ideas from reading examples of other’s work.

Avoid plagiarism, as this will immediately disqualify your paper from academic merit, as music essay examples should inspire your writing, rather than become the basis for it.

After your initial research and the execution of the pre-writing stages, you can start focusing on the details of your assignment. Straightway, music appreciation becomes an essential prerequisite to your essay.

You should find what elements resonate with you in your task and focus on developing them into factual statements.

For example, if you like the sound, then elaborate this feeling into a coherent thought that explains why. Conversely, if you do not find any part enjoyable, then do the same, but remember to remain academic and respectful.

Another important aspect of your essay is the history of the assigned piece, which you can address after your introduction. Doing so will help your readers be on the same level of knowledge as you, the essay’s writer.

Without a historical backdrop, jazz becomes just another funky-sounding genre, not a monument to America’s 20th-century rebellious tendencies.

Thus, explain how a particular piece came into existence or why was it created to increase its importance in your audience’s eyes. Furthermore, you may even compare it against other sample music of its time.

Understand that music essay topics need to be technical and explain any occurring background processes, from composition to execution.

Therefore, your bibliography should include a variety of book and journal titles. These have to demonstrate the level of your research and support your ideas with credible references.

This advice may be especially relevant if you are writing a highly technical or instrumental essay, as it allows explaining complicated concepts with ease and trustworthiness.

After you have covered technical, perception-related, and historical aspects of your subject as per your initial outline, you can integrate information about its impact on future compositions.

The continuous flow of history from the past to the future should help you support your work and uphold its importance in the broader context. Additionally, doing so enables you to lead your essay to a well-rounded conclusion.

Finally, from music essay titles that have to grab your readers’ attention to grouping paragraphs with a single theme under one subheading, you can begin finalizing your essay.

Remember the importance of explaining the different sides to your problem and tie them all together in your conclusion.

This action makes your work a comprehensive study on your subject, educating your readers, and correctly presenting information in an easy-to-read format.

An 18th-Century Phenom Arrives at Lincoln Center

The Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center will play Marianna Martines’s Symphony in C, a milestone for a composer whose music mostly fell silent after her death.

By Garrett Schumann

The composer Marianna Martines grew up in Vienna when the city was teeming with towering figures in classical music. Haydn was her neighbor and teacher. Mozart sought her out as a duet partner.

Born in 1744, Martines began her remarkable career at just 16. At 38, she became the first female composer programmed by the Society of Musicians , whose elite concert series also gave Beethoven his Viennese performance debut. But after her death, in 1812, Martines’s music mostly fell silent, a fate shared by so many female composers of her era.

This week, though, the Summer for the City festival at Lincoln Center will perform Martines’s Symphony in C major (1770), a work composed decades before it was common for women to write orchestral music. The performances are a significant step in the reclamation of her music.

“It was an easy decision to present this fantastic piece,” said Jonathon Heyward , the music director of the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center. “The whole piece is filled with wonderful interplay within the strings and the wind parts.” The first movement, he added, “is light and spirited.”

The pianist Sandra Mogensen found similar qualities in Martines’s piano music, calling it “sparkly, wonderful and vibrant.” She and her colleague Erica Sipes have played through all of Martines’s available keyboard works as part of Piano Music She Wrote, an online project they founded in 2020 to encourage performances of public domain piano music by women. Martines’s Piano Sonata in A major (1765) was one of the first pieces Sipes recorded. “It pulled me in,” she said. “Every movement has something different to say.”

This past spring, Elizabeth Schauer, director of choral activities at the University of Arizona, led what was likely the first performance since Martines’s death of her Mass No. 3 (1761). When she wrote it, “she was only 17,” Schauer said. “My students and I found it astonishing and beautiful.” Schauer used a new score reconstructed by her student James Higgs from manuscripts. For Higgs, Martines’s style reflects her teachers and supporters in Vienna, who were Italian.

What to know about the Lallycooler Music Festival coming to Great Bear Ski Valley

The washington pavilion will co-host the first annual outdoor event with great bear ski valley.

The Washington Pavilion announced Thursday that the performing arts center is bringing a new music concert to town in 2025.

Great Bear Ski Valley will co-host Lallycooler Music Festival with the Pavilion next year, July 11-12.

Country singer Sam Hunt will headline the outdoor event, which will feature a professional DJ overseeing the weekend performances. More than a dozen popular performers for the multi-genre festival will be announced soon. Local and regional artists will also take the stage during the family-friendly weekend celebration.

"Sioux Falls has never seen an event like what we are going to be delivering," said Darrin Smith, CEO at the Washington Pavilion, during Thursday's press conference.

He said he hopes to see more than 20,000 guests attend the live music event and that camping opportunities will be available on site to accommodate visitors.

"There is no one better suited to execute this than the Pavilion our 3e Encore team," he said. "We have the expertise and the amazing energy to create an event like this for the city and entire region."

Washington Pavilion chose Great Bear Ski Valley as the location for this music festival because of its sprawling 250-acre outdoor park and nature area. The stage will look out toward the landscape and hiking trails, and the ski hill will be used as amphitheater seating.

Great Bear General Manager Dan Grider said because they are primarily known as a winter destination, it’s been a long-time goal that the community sees and visits Great Bear as a year-round venue.

“Back in the early '80s, Great Bear used to host some pretty good shows," Grider said Thursday. "It's going to be so great to see this hill alive again with the sound of music."

Learn more about the festival: Keep an eye out for the announcement of Saturday's headliner as well as other performers who will be on stage.

Smith, who announced Thursday that the tagline for the festival is, "the coolest thing you'll do all summer," said he feels this is an ideal next step for the "vibrant and growing" Sioux Falls community.

“We see this festival as the start of a tradition that will evolve and that the community will be excited to embrace,” he said.

MarketBeat will be the presenting sponsor for the festival. Cost of day and weekend passes will be announced soon, but some of those proceeds will be donated to a local nonprofit, also to be announced soon.

"This is something the community is really excited to see," said Alexa Jerstad, director of communications out at Great Bear. "It's the kind of fun we've been missing in the area, and we can't wait to see the fun we're going to have at The Bear."

14 people got Valley fever after a California music festival, highlighting the fungus' growing threat

Coccidioidomycosis fungus, illustration

The Summary

  • Cases of Valley fever, a fungal infection, have been climbing in California in recent years.
  • Fourteen cases identified among people who attended or worked at a music festival in the state are an example of the fungus' threat.
  • Climate change is creating more opportunities for the fungus, called coccidioides, to proliferate.

An outbreak of Valley fever among attendees and workers at an outdoor music festival in California’s Central Valley highlights the fungal infection’s mounting threat .

Fourteen people who traveled to attend or work at the Lightning in a Bottle Festival in Bakersfield in May have tested positive for Valley fever and developed symptoms, the California Department of Public Health told NBC News on Thursday. At least three of them were hospitalized.

“About a week after getting back from the festival, I just got hit with crazy body aches and crazy fevers,” said Eric Mattson, 33, a musician in San Luis Obispo, who said he attended the festival this year. He tested positive for Valley fever last month.

His symptoms progressed to joint pain that made it difficult to move, accompanied by night sweats, Mattson said: “I would wake up, like, two to three times a night, just soaking in sweat. I would have to change my bedding and change my pajamas while in a ton of pain. It was pretty awful.”

The fungus that causes Valley fever, called coccidioides, thrives in hot, dry climates, so most cases are found in Arizona and California. As climate change creates more opportunities for it to proliferate, and Valley fever cases have been climbing in California.

“Preliminary Valley fever case reports have been particularly high in 2023 and 2024, which is possibly linked to heavy winter rains in 2022-2023 following years of drought,” the health department said in a statement.

California's annual number of infections rose from fewer than 1,000 in 2000 to more than 9,000 in 2019. According to a recent report from the state health department , there have been 5,370 suspected or confirmed cases so far this year.

In San Joaquin County, the combined tally of suspected and confirmed cases has exceeded 200 already this year, compared to 47 in all of last year and 59 in 2022.

Valley fever does not spread from person to person — rather, the lung infection results from inhaling spores in dust or soil. The name is a reference to the San Joaquin Valley, where coccidioides was discovered.

Mattson said he has not been contacted by California's health department, which has not disclosed the names of the 14 confirmed cases, so it is unclear whether Mattson is included. NBC News reviewed the medical record showing his positive test result.

Mattson estimated that he lost 20 pounds in four to five weeks.

He said he suspected Valley fever, since he had heard reports that some festivalgoers had gotten infected in past years, but he was initially diagnosed with pneumonia. Eventually, his primary care doctor ordered a blood test, which came back positive early last month.

Situations like Mattson’s are common, said Dr. Geetha Sivasubramanian, an assistant clinical professor of medicine at UCSF Fresno: “A lot of times, patients with Valley fever are misdiagnosed as having bacterial pneumonia.”

That’s because many doctors are not aware of the illness or they test for it too early or confuse it with another respiratory infection, she said. Such errors can lead patients to take antibiotics they do not need, rather than the appropriate antifungal medications.

Around 60% of people with Valley fever do not have symptoms, while others develop a cough, fatigue, fever, shortness of breath, night sweats, muscle aches, joint pain or a rash on the legs or the upper body. People who have diabetes or weakened immune systems or are pregnant are vulnerable to severe lung infections. In very rare cases — around 1% — a lung infection may spread to the bones, joints or brain, which can be deadly.

An ideal setting for Valley fever to spread

Sivasubramanian said she was not surprised by the cluster of cases among the more than 20,000 music festival attendees.

“We live in a high endemic area for Valley fever, so anybody who’s visiting, who lives in these areas, is at risk,” she said.

In the Central Valley, heavy rain in the winter helps the fungus grow in the soil. Then, as temperatures get hotter and the soil becomes drier, dust carries the spores into the air.

Activities that kick up lots of dust — such as construction or farming — increase the risk of exposure. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked five confirmed and five suspected cases of Valley fever to dry, dusty conditions on an outdoor film set.

Lightning in a Bottle seemed to be in the right location at the right time, said Dr. Arturo Casadevall, chair of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

“You need two things: You need a cloud of spores, and you need people,” he said.

Mattson said wind during the festival stirred up dust near some of the stages and in the campground where many attendees stayed.

“When a lot of people are dancing, it definitely kicks up a lot of dust,” he said.

Valley fever may be expanding to new areas

As climate change prompts heavier rain and higher temperatures, it is fostering conditions conducive to the coccidioides fungus. More frequent and intense wildfires might also carry spores to surrounding areas .

Outside of California and Arizona, a 2019 study estimated that Valley fever may already be endemic in certain counties in 10 other states as far east as Kansas and Oklahoma.

“As the deserts expand, we’re going to see cases outside of historical regions,” Casadevall said.

Some researchers suspect that rodents may help spread the fungus as climate change alters their migration patterns, though others do not think that’s common. A 2022 study detected coccidioides among rodents in Kern County, where the Lightning in a Bottle festival is held.

Mattson said he does not regret attending the festival but wants others in the area to be aware of the illness and its symptoms.

“You really need to advocate to get tested for if you’ve been in the valley or been in a place where there’s a lot of dust in the air,” he said.
