Presentation software is a powerful tool in the workplace. It’s especially true for PowerPoint, the most popular presentation software. It helps freshen up lectures, organize information in an easily deliverable way, and is generally accessible to most people. There are a lot of options as well. You can find presentation software on computers and smartphones.

Additionally, some tools make each platform easier. We have a bit of everything on this list. Here are the best PowerPoint apps and tools for Android.

AndrOpen Office is likely the best bet for Linux users. It fully supports OpenOffice file formats and includes Writer, Calc, and Impress. Impress is the presentation software. It can also read PowerPoint files as well. In terms of PowerPoint apps, it does pretty well. You can create a slideshow, add graphics, add text, and the basic stuff like that. The free version is more usable than the first free version of most paid software. The app also works perfectly with niche functions like Samsung DeX. It’s not quite as powerful as Microsoft PowerPoint, but it’s close enough for most people.

Price: Free / $2.99 per item

Clicker works a lot like ASUS Remote Link. It lets you connect to your computer and use your phone as a presentation clicker. It also seems to work on Mac, Linux, Windows, iOS, and Android. That should cover just about everybody. In any case, the workflow for this one is pretty obvious. You create your PowerPoint on your computer, where you have full access to all of the tools. Then, you use this app to present the PowerPoint at your meeting. There is also remote trackpad functionality, Samsung S-Pen support, and space to keep notes for your speech. There aren’t many presentation clicker apps like this one, so it’s nice to see that at least one is really good.

Google Home is an out-of-the-box idea. You use it with a Chromecast to mirror your phone screen to a display. You can then use your phone to present your PowerPoint. This lets you work on your PowerPoint either on desktop or mobile. You must put the project on your mobile phone, use Google Home to mirror it, and begin your presentation. Chromecasts are small, easy to carry, and very easy to use. It lets you use the presentation space’s existing resources without carting in some extra equipment. Plus, the app is free.

Google Slides is the presentation app from the Google Drive office suite. It’s largely considered the top or at least second-best option in terms of PowerPoint apps. You can mess with your presentation on your phone or desktop via the web. Plus, Google Drive has live collaboration tools and many other features. Your presentation is stored in the cloud, so you can access and download it whenever you want. Plus, it can read, edit, and save PowerPoint files for excellent cross-product functionality. It’s also, far and away, the best free option available. That makes it great for students without access to a Microsoft Office account.

Microsoft PowerPoint is the top one or two PowerPoint apps in the world. It’s so good that people refer to presentation apps as PowerPoint apps. The mobile version is more functional than its desktop equivalent, even if the desktop variant is more powerful. On top of the usual presentation features, the app also includes a Presenter Coach function to help you prepare for your speech. Luckily, Microsoft has adapted nicely to the times. You can start fresh or edit existing PowerPoint presentations that you started on your computer. The full functionality is available with an Office 365 subscription. The good news is the subscription unlocks both the desktop and mobile versions of PowerPoint with just a single subscription. You also get Microsoft OneDrive space to store and transport your PowerPoints.

Remote Desktop apps

Remote desktop apps are a slightly archaic but very functional method of presenting stuff. These apps let you connect directly to your desktop computer, mirroring everything on your mobile phone. There are usually tools to let you navigate around. Thus, you can connect to your computer and give a presentation straight from your phone without moving any files. You can also use these to work on your PowerPoints straight from your computer, so you don’t lose any functionality by being on a smartphone or tablet. We have Microsoft Remote Desktop linked since it covers most use cases, but others are available, too.

Price: Free / $1.99 per item

Unified Remote is another app that lets you control your computer remotely. It works a lot like the ASUS Remote Link. You connect to your computer and can use the app to navigate the UI, as a mouse and keyboard, and there is a built-in presentation setup. This one is different because it has dedicated “remotes” for many specific apps, like Google Chrome, Spotify, Winamp, and, you guessed it, Microsoft PowerPoint. Downloads are available for Windows, Mac, Linux (Debian and RPM distros), Raspberry Pi (ARMv6 and MIPS), and others. That makes it suitable for just about everybody.

Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $29.99 per year

WPS Office is just one of many alternative office apps that double as PowerPoint apps. WPS Office has a writer, spreadsheet, and presentation function. The presentation function lets you read and edit PowerPoint files, so it’s a good start there. The app includes various layouts, animations, transitions, and other effects. Additionally, it lets you draw on slides or use a built-in digital laser pointer during your presentation, which is a nice little feature. WPS Office is free to use if you don’t mind the occasional annoying advertisement.

Zoho Show is one of the few reasonably good standalone PowerPoint apps. It’s not connected to an entire office suite, and it’s not a clicker or a remote desktop app. It’s an app dedicated to making presentations. It includes a bunch of stuff, including various types of charts, over 100 shapes, different formatting options, filters, animations, and other stuff. There are also templates to help you get started. It’s not quite as powerful as some competitors. At the time of this writing, the developers are still working on incorporating stuff like music into the app. However, this is an excellent alternative to Google Slides if you need a quick, free option.

How to Open a PowerPoint Presentation on Android

Viewing PowerPoint files using an Android device has become easier than it was just a few years back. There are a number of easy methods that you can use to open a PowerPoint presentation on Android. We have listed a few of the most convenient methods below; which can enable you to seamlessly view and (in some cases) edit your PowerPoint presentations on Android devices.

Microsoft Office Apps for Android

With the mobile first, cloud first strategy, Microsoft has been delivering Office Applications for the major mobile OS’s. On 2015, it was launched the  Microsoft PowerPoint for Android . This release of the popular presentation software provides a comprehensive set of functionalities to create, edit and deliver presentations on the go. For devices with Android versions below 4.4, Microsoft delivered the Microsoft Office Mobile which enables users to view presentations in their phones. Both products are free to download and use and require a Microsoft Account.

PowerPoint Online

There are a number of online platforms which enable viewing PowerPoint presentations for free. These include cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and more. For the best experience we recommend using PowerPoint Online . This is a web app from the Office Online family which enables creating, viewing, editing and presenting your PowerPoint presentations from an Internet connected browser.

The below screenshot shows the Creative Roadmap Concept PowerPoint Template running via PowerPoint Online web app on an Android browser. PowerPoint Online is the best suited presentation tool when you need to work with decks that make use of advanced PowerPoint features as 3D effects, gradients and animations as it preserves the experience generated with the Application version. Google Slides

Other than PowerPoint Online, you can use Google Drive powered Google Slides app. This web app can either be directly accessed via a browser or you can simply get the Google Slides for Android app to get support for PowerPoint files on your Android device. With Google Slides you can create and edit presentations on the go, as well as view existing PowerPoint files.

SlideOnline

SlideOnline is a web app which supports PowerPoint and PDF files for instant conversion into shareable online slides. You can upload your PowerPoint presentations to SlideOnline and view them via an Internet connected device with a browser; including Android devices.

Files uploaded to SlideOnline can be viewed within an easy to navigate interface, where each slide can be seen using navigation buttons. You can also enable comments for user feedback for uploaded presentations. The uploaded files can be kept either public or private and you can share them online via direct link, social media buttons and embed code.

The below screenshot shows the Marketing 7C Compass PowerPoint Template uploaded to SlideOnline, running on an Android device via an internet browser.

Convert PowerPoint to PDF

If you don’t intend to use PowerPoint apps for Android, you can simply save your PowerPoint files to PDF format and view them using a PDF supported Android app. If you have PowerPoint installed on your computer, you can save your PowerPoint presentation files to PDF format via File –> Save As –> PDF . Otherwise, you can use PowerPoint Online and print the PowerPoint presentation into PDF.

To demonstrate the above mentioned functionality, we saved the Company Profile PowerPoint Template in PDF format and opened it using Android.

Convert PowerPoint to Pictures

You can also export your PowerPoint slides as individual pictures, save them to a single folder and save the folder to your Android device. This way you can play your slides as images one by one.

You can save your PowerPoint in a preferred image format (e.g. JPG, BMP or GIF) via File –> Save As -> JPG / BMP / GIF  from PowerPoint.

We saved the Blue Dashboard PowerPoint Template in JPG format and opened the slides as images on Android. As you can see from the screenshot below, you can easily present your content as images on Android devices by converting your PowerPoint slides as JPG files.

Convert PowerPoint to Video

Another easy way of viewing your PowerPoint files on Android is to convert them to video format. PowerPoint 2013 supports conversion of PowerPoint slides to MP4 format, whereas older versions support conversion to WMV file format. To use the native video conversion function in PowerPoint, go to File –Save As –> MP4 or WMV .

5 Methods to View PowerPoint on Android Devices

If you need to open your PowerPoint presentation on any Android device then there are multiple ways to accomplish it. Here we will see a few alternatives to open presentations on Android devices such as smartphones or tablets.

1. Install Office Mobile for Android or PowerPoint for Tablet

By installing the Office Mobile application by Microsoft from Google Play you can easily open your presentations on any Android device. It is available for smartphones and tablets and it is the official MS Office application by Microsoft Corporation. Go to Google Play to learn more.

There is another application provided by Microsoft Corporation that is oriented to PowerPoint presentations. You can find it on Google Play and its name is PowerPoint for Tablet. The main advantage of installing it is that you can also edit the presentations (not only view it) and this is a very powerful tool for distributed collaboration.

Google Slides  is another great alternative to open presentations. It also let you open PDF and PowerPoint on any Android device and it is available via Google Play for free.

2. Save PowerPoint as PDF

Another way to open your slides on Android is by saving the PowerPoint presentation as PDF. You can save the PowerPoint deck as a PDF file (Portable-Document Format) and this is a format supported by many different devices and there are lot of available free software and apps that are capable of previewing and opening PDF files.

In Google Play you can also find free tools to open PDF. Adobe Reader is one of these tools quickly open PDF documents from email, the web, or any app that supports sharing.

Other tools supporting PDF on Android are Google Docs, Microsoft Office Mobile or even Foxit Mobile PDF.

3. Save PowerPoint Slides as Images

If none of the previous options is an alternative for you, then you can consider to save the slides as images.

From PowerPoint go to File menu and then click Save As and in the save as type combo box choose JPG or PNG for maximum quality.

4. Convert PowerPoint to Video

Another option is that you convert your PowerPoint presentation to a video (MP4). This way, you can then save the presentation on any Android device and play the video using the built-in video player or any free video player such as VLC or BS Player.

Moreover, you can upload the presentation to Youtube and then use the Youtube application in your Android device to play the slideshow. The benefit of saving the PPT as a video is that you can preserve any transition or animation that was created in PowerPoint.

5. Use an Online PowerPoint Viewer

You can use SlideShare or SlideOnline and upload your presentation in PowerPoint or a PDF, then you can get a link to directly play the presentation or see the presentation slides in your favorite Android browser like Chrome.

PowerPoint on an Android phone

PowerPoint on an Android phone–is that crazy or great?

The app is free. When you install it, you’ll be asked to log in. You don’t HAVE to log in, but if you do, it will remember things like recent presentations. You can also connect to “Places,” which are online storage locations such as OneDrive.

Everything is small!

Obviously, everything is small and to make it work, menus are collapsed until you expand them. At the upper left, you’ll see 3 lines (the menu icon) which opens the File menu as you see here. You can use your phone’s back button to escape out of this.

When you’re done typing, you can again use the Back button to escape. If you’re using the vertical view, you’ll see your current slide in the middle, the File menu and other icons on the top, and some of your slides on the bottom. If there are too many too see, you can swipe left or right to display the rest. To move from slide to slide, swipe along the thumbnail slides at the bottom and then tap a slide.

If you hold your phone horizontally, you’ll see a view that looks pretty close to what you see on your computer, with the thumbnails on the left and the current slide on the right.

Using the icons

• Edit Text: Opens text-editing options at the bottom. Tap the icon again to close them
• Notes: Opens and closes the Notes pane
• Slide Show view: Brings you into Slide Show view. This view is always horizontal. Swipe to move from slide to slide.
• Save: Saves your work. (I wonder when someone will create a new Save icon, given that “floppy” disks don’t exist any more.)
• Share: Lets you email the presentation as an attachment or share it with other services. I had Gmail, webhost email, Skype, Evernote, Android Beam ( “ to allow data to be transferred via near field communication (NFC)), Bluetooth, Cloud (I think it’s from Verizon), Drive, OneDrive, Quick Connect (I have no clue-it sends to nearby devices), Zoom (my webinar service) and Wi-Fi Direct. I have the Outlook Web App on my phone (which I love) and I was disappointed that it wasn’t one of the options.

When you use the Edit Text icon, you also get a Home menu. Click it to expand it and you get some of the standard ribbon tabs: Insert, Design, Transitions, Slide Show, Review and View. You have lots of transitions but the rest of the “tabs” are much more limited than the desktop version.

When you select an object, such as a shape or image, a menu appears with options such as Cut, Copy, Paste, Duplicate, Delete, and Copy Formatting.

You can turn your phone and see the screen vertically or horizontally. Sometimes one works better, sometimes the other, depending on what you’re doing.

What’s missing–can you find them?

Here are some important features that I wasn’t able to find:

• Slide Master view
• Transparency settings
• Save as Picture

However, when I used the Share icon to email the presentation to myself and opened it on my computer, I was able to add SmartArt and animation. I saved in on OneDrive (after setting that up as a Place). When I re-opened the presentation on my Android phone, the SmartArt and animation were there. I thought I would tap to replicate clicking on a computer, but I had to swipe. Right to left played the animation; left to right ran the animation backwards (like using the left arrow key).

I’m using it because I think it’s the best slide presentation app for Android, but it still needs improvement. I have an interactive slide presentation of over 300 slides. The problem with the Android powerpoint app is that it won’t advance to the next slide after the input and answer, but will go right to the beginning of the presentation. It seems to be a fault of the Android operating system, because the presentation flows without any hitch on my laptop. Outline View new in PowerPoint for Android

PowerPoint Mobile for Android is getting an ‘Outline View’ but it’s not like Outline View in Windows or Mac versions of PowerPoint.

This Outline View is really an ‘Outline to Presentation’ wizard that lets you make an outline or bullet point list then choose a slide theme to quickly make a presentation.

When starting a new presentation you’re show an option to use the so-called ‘Outline View’.

Type in your outline, starting with a title slide, then slides with optional bullet points on each.

When finished, click Next to continue.

Choose Designs

The last part is choosing a design or template for the presentation.  Scroll through the Designer options at the bottom of the screen or choose the ‘Blank’ choice for no design.

Go back to Outline – click the left arrow

Click Save to make the presentation.

No Backsies!

Once you’ve clicked ‘Save’ there’s no going back to this Outline View.

This is a show-off feature that Microsoft can boast about, instead of something truly useful to PowerPoint users.  This so-called ‘Outline View’ lets Microsoft hype their cloud-based Designer feature but otherwise falls short of meeting customers needs.

More useful would be a proper Outline View just like in PowerPoint for Windows or Mac.  PowerPoint mobile users could then edit their slides easily, switching between slide and outline views.

At the moment, Outline View in PowerPoint for Android is only for Insiders who are running Build 16.0.13426.20082 or later.

Eventually it’ll be in the public versions of the app and spread to PowerPoint for Apple devices/iOS.

Create presentation viewer for your Android📱 [use case]

I will show how to create your own mobile presentation viewer with Aspose.Slides API for Android .

This is the first article in a series , where I will pass you through some trivial and non-trivial scenarious, like: edit and convert presentation from mobile; upload presentation as a web application or add it to Aspose Cloud Storage ; share presentation in various formats; generate unique presenation key; and many others.

So, let us start with the first step - basic presentation viewer!👩‍💻

I will pass you through the key points, while you can find the whole project on GitHub .

Open Android Studio .

Install latest Aspose.Slides API for Android.

Define Main Layout with btnOpenPresentation button, or just take it from link. My lookes simply this way:

Create Main Activity and add this code to onCreate method, which will launch Presentation Activity by btnOpenPresentation click:

Create Presentation Layout with slides’ carousele and a control to show the current slide, or just take it from link. My looks simply this way, but there is a lot of space to show creativity here👩‍🎨. Actually, this is a final application we should get:

Create Presentation Activity . Now, let us stop more detailed.

Define execFilePicker() method and call it from onCreate() in Presentation Activity. This method will open the file system, that we could choose the presentation file this way:

All this is done just in 3 lines:

Note that we’ve passed READ_REQUEST_CODE to startActivityForResult method. We will use it to check activity result in onActivityResult method and know if we can load the presentation chosen:

In previous method we’ve called execLoadPresentation method to load chosen presentation. Then selectSlide method can be called to select the slide of the presentation, which should be shown on Presentation Layout.

Now lets create LoadPresentationTask and SelectSlideTask classes used in two previous methods.

LoadPresentationTask will do the following:

• doInBackground - set the presenation, choosed by user, as the current one.

SelectSlideTask will do the following:

• doInBackground - select the slide of presentation to be shown on Presentation Layout.

These tasks refer to presentationActivity.app. setPresentation() and presentationActivity.app. selectSlide() , where presentationActivity.app - is the instance of SlidesApp class, which manages all logic about Presentation and Slide objects.

In the end, we came to the main part of the story.👩‍🏫 ❗️THE MAGIC STARTS HERE!❗️

SlidesApp class incapsulates all the logic to work with Aspose.Slides API for Android . This class will allow us to locally save presentation, get all slides, set current slide, convert it into the thumbnail, calculate thumbnail’s size, etc.

Import IPresentation , ISlide , ISlideCollection types:

Add SlidesApp class with the instances of current presentation and current slide:

Now lets implement selectSlide method, that will call getSlides to retrieve all presentation slides, then get the slide needed by its id. And, get the thumbnail of the slide with getThumbnail method.

The thumbnail is saved into currSlide property and returned back into SelectSlideTask, which will draw it on Presentation Layout:

View PowerPoint Presentations On Android With PowerPoint Reader

PowerPoint Reader is a free (PowerPoint for Android ) application for viewing PowerPoint files on your Android device. PowerPoint Reader requires no complex configurations and has a straightforward navigation menu to help you select and open PowerPoint presentations . It also comes with basic sharing options which enable users to instantly share a presentation via email or by using an installed application with similar functionality.

As PowerPoint Reader has been designed only to view Microsoft PowerPoint files on Android devices, you can instantly open a presentation by selecting it from your smartphone or tablet via this app. Once launched, PowerPoint Reader provides two options i.e. to either begin viewing PowerPoint files or to donate to the developer. Tapping on the former takes you to your SD Card to select a PowerPoint file.

Once you have located your file, simply tap on it to view it on your Android device without any distortion or reduction in quality. In case you wish to share the file with someone else, tap the Envelope icon and you will be given the option to instantly send the presentation via your email client or some other app. For example, if you are using a file sharing application like Send Anywhere, it will automatically appear as an option for sending the presentation file.

The Verdict

Unlike other applications (e.g. Documents To Go or KingSoft office), PowerPoint Reader only provides the option to view PowerPoint files. Hello folks, I was working on a project for wireless presentation and i need to embedd a PPT viewer in it. I searched for some existing library but found none of them to be developer friendly. So here is a custom library made by me for seamless integration of a PPT viewer in any existing application.

All you need to do is:

Download the library of mine (of course from GitHub).

Somehow add it to your existing app, that can be done in any ways. a. Copy and Paste it in a folder named as "libs" in your project root directory. b. Add it to your build path by right clicking on your project and "Configure build ......."

You must be having an Activity and an XML file for it.

Now open the layout XML file and add the following line of code in it. < com.itsrts.pptviewer.PPTViewer android:id="@+id/pptviewer" android:width="match_parent" android:height="match_parent" />

Goto the main activity file which will be inflating the above XML and after the "setContentView", add: PPTViewer pptViewer = (PPTViewer) findViewById(R.id.pptviewer); pptViewer.setNext_img(R.drawable.next) .setPrev_img(R.drawable.prev) .setSettings_img(R.drawable.settings) .setZoomin_img(R.drawable.zoomin) .setZoomout_img(R.drawable.zoomout); pptViewer.loadPPT(activity, path); // path is a String having the location of the ppt file to be loaded.

The library is fully customizable with the option to change the viewer the way you want.

People use widgets on a daily basis. It’s a crucial and natural part of user interaction with apps that users may be completely unaware of using widgets so often. Widgets serve many purposes. A widget can be an addition to the desktop, a means of messaging, or a way to attract users' attention.

Widgets play the role of a personal assistant that the user can customize for their needs. The most popular applications of this type include news feeds, clocks, weather, calendars, dictionaries, traffic, games, and much more.

A widget is not just a compact and useful feature, but can also be a handy marketing tool. They also enhance the usability of applications, allowing users to quickly access important information and perform basic functions without having to open the app.

In this article, I am going to explain step by step how to create a simple home screen widget for Android. 

What Is a Widget?

Let’s start with the basics and define what a widget is. 

You can think of widgets as "at-a-glance" views of an app's most important data and functionality that are accessible right on the user's home screen. Users can add widgets to the home screen, move them around, resize, and customize them. Widgets can be designed as standard Android elements or customisable applications created by developers.

Home screen widgets can include various interface elements such as text boxes, buttons, images, lists, etc. They can display static information or dynamically update in real-time, such as showing the current weather, the latest news, or calendar events.

Basic Components of an Android Widget

A widget requires the following basic components:

AppWidgetProviderInfo  Object

Describes the metadata for a widget, such as the widget's layout, update frequency, and AppWidgetProvider class. You need to define it in an XML resource file.

AppWidgetProvider  Class

A convenience class to aid in implementing an AppWidget provider. It defines the basic methods that allow you to interact with the widget programmatically. Use the AppWidgetProvider class to handle widget broadcasts: receive broadcasts when the widget is updated, enabled, disabled, or deleted. You need to declare AppWidgetProvider in the manifest and then implement it.

View Layout

Defines the initial layout for the widget. The layout is defined in XML.

Now that we figured out what we need to create a widget, let’s follow the steps to create a simple widget. 

How To Implement a Simple Widget

To create a widget for your app, you will need to do the following:

1. Define the essential features of your widget with the AppWidgetProviderInfo object in an XML resource file using a single <appwidget-provider> element and save it in the project's res/xml/ folder:

2. Register AppWidgetProvider in the application manifest and specify the created AppWidgetProviderInfo :

As a result, you have your own widget. However, it still doesn’t have any functionality. This is how you can configure it. 

How to Configure Your Widget

There are many different parameters to configure the widget, which you can read about in detail in the documentation. Let's take a look at the main ones:

• initialLayout —Widget layout 
• previewLayout —Widget preview layout in the widget selection interface
• description —Widget description in the widget selection interface
• targetCellHeight / targetCellWidth —Width and height of the widget in cells
• resizeMode —Mode of possibility to resize widget dimensions

Let's get the configuration:

As a layout, let’s use the basic TextView ( previewLayout has a different background attribute):

Expanding the Functionality of Your Widget

In the example above, the widget content is static, but usually, the widget needs to react to events in the system. To implement this, you can make your own implementation of AppWidgetProvider , where you define how the widget will react to events in the system or to user actions.

The simplest scenario is to open the application when you click on the Widget.

First, define DemoAppWidget :

Then you need to specify it in AndroidManifest.xml :

Widget Settings

If you want users to be able to configure your widget, you can create the configuration activity. This activity is automatically launched by the app widget host either when the widget is created or later, depending on the configuration options you specify. 

This activity lets users modify widget settings — for example, the time zone for a clock widget.

Letting Users Pin Your Widget to Homescreen

You may need to suggest the user to add the app widget to their home screen. In this case, you can show a prompt to add a widget by some event in the application (for example, upon toppling a button). To do so, create a request in your app for the system to pin a widget onto a supported launcher:

We found a way to escape Meta AI on Facebook - but there's a catch

If you've browsed Facebook or Instagram within the past few weeks, you've probably noticed some changes. Thanks to the introduction of Meta AI , artificial intelligence is now integrated into posts on your feed and the search function on both sites.

Meta calls the assistant a way to "get things done, learn, create, and connect with the things that matter to you." Meta AI works much like ChatGPT and other popular AI tools, but many have voiced frustration with accidentally tapping on a query below a post and engaging the chatbot or trying to search for a profile and running into the chatbot instead.

So what's the deal? Can you turn off Meta AI?

It turns out you can't. There's no way to disable Meta AI from either Facebook or Instagram in either the browser version or the app version. I asked Meta AI if I could disable it, and the chatbot responded that I could.

"Select Settings and Privacy," it said, "Then click on Settings and scroll down to AI settings and click on AI and machine learning." From that screen, I should "Toggle off AI search," the bot told me. Here's the thing: There are no further settings for AI within the main Settings page, and the toggle the chatbot mentions doesn't exist. 

Meta AI's help page  states that "Meta AI's responses may not be accurate or appropriate." That seems to be the case here.

Two "tricks" have been spreading on social media for disabling the feature, but neither worked when we tested them. Blocking the Meta AI profile on Facebook or muting it might give you a little hope when it takes away the new AI search icon and replaces it with the old magnifying glass, but if you actually press it, you land in the same place -- Meta AI search.

The one way to avoid Meta AI 

If you're willing to use a very stripped-down version of Facebook, you can visit  http://mbasic.facebook.com . That version looks pretty bad on mobile and even worse on a desktop browser, but the functionality is there if you're adamant about avoiding Meta AI, which you will not find there.  

The good news is that you can still search Facebook via the Meta AI tool. On Facebook, there's an animated blue ring where the search button used to be. Tap it, and you'll see a search bar that says, "Ask Meta AI anything." If you start typing someone's name, profiles will pop up as usual. If you're looking for a specific post or picture, that functionality works as it did before. So while the search button might not be as obvious, once you know where it is, the search process works just like it did before.

There is some value in using Meta AI. You can use it through Messenger or WhatsApp to write content, generate images, and plan events. The chatbot can offer ideas and make suggestions below most Facebook or Instagram posts that tell you more about a certain aspect of that post. If a friend posts about seeing the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., for example, you might see a suggestion to ask when the best time to see them is.

While the chatbot might be confusing at first, it appears that Meta AI is here to stay -- whether you like it or not. The big question is: Will users eventually embrace, or ultimately avoid, Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp?

Google built some of the first social apps for Android, including Twitter and others

Here’s a tidbit of startup history that may not be widely known outside of the tech firms themselves: The first versions of popular Android apps, like Twitter, were built by Google itself. That revelation came about via a new podcast with Twitter’s former senior director of product management, Sara Beykpour, now the co-founder of the AI news startup Particle.

In a podcast hosted by Lightspeed partner Michael Mignano, Beykpour reminisces about her role in Twitter’s history. She explains how she began working at Twitter in 2009, initially as a tools engineer, when the company employed only around 75 people. Later, Beykpour moved to work on mobile at Twitter around the time when other third-party apps were growing in popularity on other platforms, like BlackBerry and iOS. One of those, Loren Brichter’s Tweetie , was even acquired by Twitter to form the basis of its first official iOS app.

As for Twitter’s Android app, that came from Google, Beykpour said.

The Twitter for Android client was “a demo app that Google had created and gave to us,” she said on the podcast. “They did that with all the popular social apps at the time: Foursquare … Twitter … they all looked the same in those early days because Google wrote them all.”

Mignano interjected, “Wait, so back up; explain this. So Google wanted companies to adopt Android, so they build you apps?”

“Yes, exactly,” Beykpour responded.

Twitter then took the Android app that Google built and continued to develop it. Beykpour was the second Android engineer at the company, she said.

In fact, Google had detailed its work on the Android Twitter client in a 2010 blog post , but much of the press coverage at the time didn’t credit the app to Google’s work, making this a forgotten bit of internet history. In Google’s post, the company explains how they implemented early Android best practices within the Twitter app. Beykpour told TechCrunch that the post’s author, Virgil Dobjanschi, was the main software engineer.

“If we had questions, we were supposed to ask him,” she recalls.

Beykpour shared other stories about Twitter’s early days, too. For instance, she worked on Twitter’s video app, Vine, (after returning to Twitter from a stint at Secret ), and had been under pressure to launch Vine on Android before Instagram launched its video product. She met that deadline by launching Vine roughly two weeks before Instagram Video, she said.

The latter “significantly” affected Vine’s numbers, and, in Beykpour’s opinion, was what led to the popular app’s demise.

“That was the day the writing was on the wall,” she said, even though it took years to eventually shut Vine down.

At Twitter, Beykpour led the shutdown of Vine’s product — an app still so well-liked that even new Twitter/X owner Elon Musk keeps teasing about bringing it back. But Beykpour thinks Twitter made the right decision with Vine, noting the app wasn’t growing and was expensive to run. She admits that others may see it differently, perhaps arguing that Vine was under-resourced or didn’t have leadership’s backing. But ultimately, the closure came down to Vine’s impact on Twitter’s bottom line.

Beykpour also shared an interesting anecdote about working on Periscope. She joined the startup right as it was acquired by Twitter , and after leaving Secret. She remembers having to officially rejoin Twitter under a fake name to keep the acquisition under wraps for a time.

At Twitter, she also talked about the difficulty in getting resources to develop products and features for power users, like journalists.

“Twitter really struggled to define its user,” she said, because it “used a lot of traditional OKRs and metrics.” But the fact was that “only a fraction of people tweet,” and “of the fraction of the people that are tweeting, a subset of those are responsible for the content that everyone actually wants to see,” was something that Beykpour says was difficult to measure.

Now at Particle , her experience building Twitter is informing strategy for the AI news app, which has the goal of connecting people with the news they care about that is going on around them.

“Particle is a re-imaging of how you intake your daily news,” Beykpour says on the podcast. The app aims to provide a multi-perspective view of news while also providing access to high-quality journalism. The startup is looking to find another way to monetize reporting beyond ads, subscriptions or micropayments. However, the specifics of how Particle will do this are still in discussion. The startup is currently talking with potential publisher partners on how to compensate them for their work.

PowerPoint for Android App displays black screen

I have seen this question come up previously but there has been no sufficient answer.

I have a Ga;axy Tab S 8+ and a Galaxy Fold 4. When I attempt to display a PowerPoint presentation to an extended (usb connected) screen using presenter mode, the presentation shows a black slide.

The app on the phone and the tablet displays the slide sequence bar at the bottom of that devices screen, but both the current slide window on the device and the displayed slide are black. If I press escape and go back to the editing of the powerpoint, I am able to see the app on both the tablet/phone and the presentation, exended screen.

I have verified that I have the latest os for both the tablet and phone.

I have cleared the cache and data for the PowerPoint app.

I have deleted and downloaded the presentation from the source multiple times on both devices.

I have deleted and re-installed powerpoint more than once on both the tablet and phone.

This seems to be an ongoing problem in the never ending fight between Android and Microsoft.

As these devices and the use of PowerPoint are critical to my process, Please provide a solution for this problem as soonn as possible.

May I know the version number of your PowerPoint app in android?

Just to confirm, is this happening to all of your PowerPoint presentation?

Can you please do a test and create a new presentation and present from your android?

I have attempted with other PowerPoints and do not have the same issue. PowerPoints from the same source as the first one have similar issues.

I will have to investigate why the presentations from that source have issues.

This is a possible formatting issue and not a PowerPoint app problem since the other presentation was working.

You might want to reach out to the source of the file and ask details how it was created.

I still have the same problem.. with the original ppt.. a new made one and another one..

I have the same even with ppt created on the phone.

Getting the same issue. PowerPoint running on a Samsung S21 Ultra will go to a black screen in presenter mode, with or without an external screen.

Android 13. Patch level 1 Sept 23

Good day all. I have the same problem. Presenting a slide deck using an external projector and the presenter view resulted in black slides after the third or fourth slide. I am running office most updated version at this time from the playstore- 1.0.1(16.0.16827.20116) with android 13 UI 5.1.1 on a Samsung s7FE. To fix this I tried the following (you will need a computer)

Open the PowerPoint file.

Go to "info"

go to "Inspect presentation" then "present document" (I left out presenter notes as I needed them in my file)

Remove all found items

The presentation then worked until it was closed and the projector removed. Upon using the presentation again it went black after 3 slides again.

A took another example of the file and did the above process. It did not resolve the issue even once.

Also I have attempted removing all transitions and animations.

I hope this can be resolved.

I was able to reproduce this. If you disconnect the projector then reconnect it the slide show will go black a few slide into a previously working slideshow.

Hi, I'm facing the same issue.

Slides do not show when presenting. Just Grey.

I'm on Samsung S22 Ultra.

For ppts created by me on my PC but also created directly on the Android app.

Sam Ash Music Stores to Close After 100 Years in Business

The chain, which started with a single shop in Brooklyn in 1924, said it would close all 42 of its locations by the end of July, citing competition from online retailers.

Sam Ash, the family-owned chain of music stores that supplied countless beginners and working musicians with guitars, drums and other instruments, is closing all of its locations after 100 years in business, it announced this week.

Derek Ash, whose great-grandparents, Sam and Rose Ash, opened the first Sam Ash store in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn in 1924, said the company’s 42 locations could not compete in the era of online shopping.

In March, Sam Ash announced it was closing 18 locations, with the hope of buying the company time to survive, Mr. Ash said. But he said that closing all the stores ended up being a “necessity.”

“A lot of this has been the move to online shopping,” Mr. Ash, the company’s chief marketing officer, said in an interview. “There are so many choices, and to maintain a store with that much selection is very difficult.”

Sam Ash has stores in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Ohio, Mr. Ash said. Some will close by the end of the month, he said. All will close by the end of July.

The news, which the company announced on Thursday , saddened many musicians who recalled buying instruments and equipment at Sam Ash or just stopping in to try out guitars, amps or keyboards — a tactile, communal experience that can’t be replicated online.

Michael Whalen , a two-time Emmy Award-winning composer and recording artist who lives in Queens, recalled going to the Sam Ash store on West 48th Street in Manhattan, in what was known as Music Row, to buy synthesizers, recording gear and studio speakers in the 1990s.

Back then, the area was packed with music stores like Manny’s Music, Rudy’s Music and Alex Musical Instruments , and Mr. Whalen might run into another musician he knew. But those stores have either closed or moved . The Sam Ash shop on West 48th Street was replaced more than a decade ago by another location on West 34th Street that is now also slated to close.

“Since the pandemic, you go around the city and you’re constantly remarking at all these things that have closed,” Mr. Whalen said. “This feels like that sort of denouement. The city is changing so much and a lot of people accuse Manhattan of being a place only for superrich people. I can see that because the places that made it feel like a community are going away.”

The rock guitarist Steve Stevens , who has played with Billy Idol, remembered walking into a Sam Ash store in the Forest Hills section of Queens in 1983 and buying a black Kramer Pacer guitar for about $700. He played that guitar, he said, while recording the hit album that Mr. Idol released later that year, “Rebel Yell.”

“Even though it was a corporate, multicity store, it still had kind of a mom-and-pop feel to it,” Mr. Stevens said in an interview. “It was always the place I hung out at 48th Street in Manhattan. It just seemed like family.”

The company traces its roots to another era in New York. Sam Ash settled in the city after immigrating from Austria in 1907, when he was 10, and worked in the garment industry. He also played the violin at weddings, dances and bar mitzvahs, and was determined to open his own music shop.

He and Ms. Ash pawned her engagement ring for $400 to make a down payment on what was to become the first Sam Ash store, according to the company’s website . She later got the ring back.

Over the decades, Sam Ash employed many musicians, giving them a steady paycheck while they hustled for gigs.

Luis Infantas, a manager at the West 34th Street store who is a drummer in a postpunk band called Black Rose Burning , said customers could always count on “real, musician-caliber advice and equipment.”

“That’s the one thing that made us different from the competition,” he said.

But sometimes, he said, customers would come to the store just to test out an instrument that they had researched online. Then they would go home and buy the instrument online.

Mr. Infantas, who has worked for Sam Ash for 29 years, said that practice, known as “ showrooming ,” underscored how hard it was for traditional stores to compete against online behemoths like Amazon.

Even so, working at Sam Ash was “the next best thing to being onstage,” Mr. Infantas said, “because you were around the equipment you love, around musicians, and you were listening to music while working.”

Customers never knew who might walk in the door.

Once, on a Tuesday evening, Mr. Infantas said, he sold monitors and keyboards to Stevie Wonder, who was buying them for a performance at the Obama White House. Another time, he said, James Gandolfini stopped in to buy drums for his son.

“Things like that you don’t get to experience,” he said, “unless you’re at an institution like Sam Ash.”

What you need to present from your smartphone

A PowerPoint presentation on your phone or stored in a cloud service such as OneDrive.

An Android phone that supports Miracast. For example:

Check your smartphone manual or check with the manufacturer to find out about Miracast support on your phone.

PowerPoint for Android installed on the phone.

A large screen that supports Miracast.

Some large wall-mounted monitors (and larger TVs) have Miracast built-in. If the monitor or projector doesn’t have Miracast built-in, an adapter can be used. For example:

The exact steps vary depending on the brand of your phone. This procedure, like the video above, describes the process on a Samsung Galaxy S8 or Note8.

On your phone, slide down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.

Tap Smart View to open that app.

Smart View looks for a nearby monitor that supports Miracast. When it finds the monitor, it connects the phone and the monitor. If multiple screens are available, they'll be listed on your phone screen. Tap a name to connect to it.

When the connection between the phone and the monitor is established, the contents of your screen appear on the monitor.

Navigate through the presentation as you normally would, tapping the forward and back arrows on the left and right side of the slide on your phone.

To turn on the laser pointer, press and hold the slide. Once it appears, move the pointer by dragging.

WhatsApp officially rolling out update with refreshed design for iOS and Android

WhatsApp on Thursday announced that it is officially releasing an update that introduces a refreshed design for both iOS and Android apps. Users will notice a new color palette and other changes that make the experience of using WhatsApp on both platforms more seamless.

WhatsApp introduces refreshed design

With the update, WhatsApp embraces the color green as the app’s accent color. As a result, things like notification badges and buttons will now appear in green. The change seems even more radical on Android, as the tab bar has been moved to the bottom of the screen, making the app more similar to the iPhone version.

For Dark Mode, WhatsApp says it changed the colors to provide higher contrast and darker tones to “reduce eye strain in low-light environments” as people wanted a “darker dark mode.” Icons and illustrations have also been updated with a more rounded and contoured style. The app has also received new animations and chat wallpapers.
