In addition to your UC application, we take both your academic record and your personal experiences into consideration during the review process . At UCLA, we seek students who have excelled academically and gained valuable perspective from the personal experiences that have helped shape their lives.

The Criteria We Consider

When reviewing an application, we implement a holistic review process, which includes looking at some of the following criteria:

Achievement in high school or college coursework
Personal qualities
Likely contributions to the intellectual and cultural vitality of our campus
Achievement in academic enrichment programs
Other achievements in any field of intellectual or creative endeavor, including the performing arts, athletics, community service, etc.

Academic Preparation

You must complete 15 A-G courses with at least 11 courses finished prior to the beginning of your last year of high school. To be competitive in the UCLA admission process, applicants should present an academic profile much stronger than any minimum UC admission requirements. See below for a listing of the A-G requirements:

2 years history/social science
4 years of college-preparatory English
3 years of mathematics (4 years recommended)
2 years of laboratory science (3 years recommended)
2 years of language other than English (3 years recommended)
1 year of visual and performing arts (if available)
1 year of college-preparatory elective

Keep in mind that there is no single academic path we expect all students to follow. However, competitive applicants earn high marks in the most rigorous curriculum available to them. Each application for admission is reviewed within the context of courses available to that student. If a particular required subject is not available, we’ll consider your application without it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because we receive more applicants than we have room to accept, admitted students usually have academic achievements far higher than the minimum requirements. So, to be “competitive” is to be among the strongest achieving students to apply.

We look for students who take advantage of the academic opportunities available to them. If you have advanced courses, we encourage you to take advantage of them. The University of California adds extra weight to grades received in UC-certified honors, AP, IB and transferable college courses.

We do not require or accept letters of recommendation in our process and we do not collect transcripts at the point of application . However, once admitted, students are required to submit official transcripts f rom any high school or college they have attended . Some professional schools may request a letter of recommendation as part of their supplemental application process.

We do not offer admission interviews. Applicants are considered for admission based upon the information they submit in the UC application . However, some majors in our specialty schools require a supplemental application as part of their admission process. Supplemental Applications

Of course, a strong academic performance combined with sustained, meaningful involvement in extracurricular activities is the ideal. But if it comes down to a choice between excelling in your coursework or your extracurricular activities, choose your academics.

UCLA will honor full IGETC certification from a first-year student if the requirements were completed before entering UC. Partial IGETC, however, will not be accepted from entering first-years at any UC campus and IGETC is not recommended for applicants to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Less than a week into the Paris Olympics, NBC Universal executives are climbing atop the medal stand.

The event has been a significant success for the company broadcasting and streaming it in the United States. NBC has already set a record for advertising revenue, viewership is up significantly and its biggest fear — that people would tune out NBC's prime-time telecast because they could watch events live during the day — hasn't materialized.

“Clearly, the Olympics are back,” said Mark Lazarus, chairman of the NBC Universal Media Group, on Thursday. A strong performance by the U.S. team has helped, he said.

It's a relief to NBC, after the Beijing Winter Games in 2022 and COVID-delayed Summer Games in Tokyo in 2021 were comparative duds. Through five days beginning with Friday's opening ceremony, the company averaged 34 million people a day watching on NBC, cable networks and Peacock, up from 19 million over the same period in Tokyo.

The company said it has taken in more than $1.25 billion in advertising revenue, its best-ever for an Olympics, and still has more time to sell.

“It's hard to paint it as anything but rosy,” said Andy Billings, a University of Alabama journalism professor and author of “Olympic Television: Inside the Biggest Show on Earth.”

The time difference — Paris is six hours ahead of the Eastern time zone — is ideal for people who want to watch events live during the day in the United States. NBC Sports President Rick Cordella said the network is heartened by the number of people watching during what is generally the workday back home; NBC is even happily taking credit for dwindled workplace productivity.

Live daytime coverage of the women's gymnastics team final reached 12.7 million people on NBC and Peacock, the network said. Even though it started on a Sunday morning, the U.S. men's basketball team had 11 million people watching its opening game against Serbia, more than the number of people who saw the gold medal game from Tokyo.

Prior to this year, NBC had generally resisted showing events live unless they took place in the evening hours in the U.S. It was a particular issue in London in 2016, when NBC restricted live events to streaming; Lazarus declined the chance to second-guess those decisions.

“Times have changed and I think we are showing forward-thinking and being progressive in our case in how to produce and exhibit the Games,” he said.

So far the network is pleased with its prime-time numbers, even if those telecasts mostly consist of reruns of events available live earlier. On Sunday, for example, Nielsen said 18.5 million people watched NBC's prime-time telecast alone, out of 41.5 million who saw Olympics content all day on Peacock or any network.

“It doesn't matter if they know the results,” said Molly Solomon, executive producer of the Olympics. “They want to know the stories of the athletes and how things played out.”

Even though they are reruns, the prime-time telecasts can be easier to watch because they cut out some of the dead time, Billings said. NBC said it didn't have statistics yet on double-dippers — people who may have seen an event live then watched it again in prime-time.

NBC said the number of people streaming “Gold Zone” on Peacock — a whip-around feed that takes viewers to different high-profile events, modeled after pro football's “Red Zone” show — has doubled since it premiered on Saturday.

If NBC Universal can keep a significant number of people who subscribed to Peacock for the Olympics from cancelling when the torch is snuffed out, that could make the difference between a success and a smash for the company, Billings said. So far, Peacock has avoided the technical glitches that plagued it in Tokyo.

The network is standing by its decision to make the Olympics more celebrity-focused, saying it creates a social media buzz that helps its telecasts. Cameras frequently catch movie and sports stars alike rooting on Olympic athletes from the stands.

“The only surprise so far is that a Kardashian hasn't made it to one of the events yet,” wrote Greg Braxton of the Los Angeles Times. “But it's still early.”

Kelly Clarkson and Peyton Manning's performance during the opening ceremony illustrated how it's a challenging job even for professional broadcasters. Solomon said roving correspondent Snoop Dogg's reception from fans and athletes alike has been positive, so expect plenty more airtime from him.

“We've been pleasantly surprised by his popularity, but you never underestimate Snoop Dogg,” Solomon said. “He's this wonderful mix of swagger and positivity.”

This NBC station's parent NBCUniversal owns NBC Sports and NBC Olympics. NBC Olympics is the U.S. broadcast rights holder to all Summer and Winter Games through 2032.

When Your Child Is an Animal

“Monkey love is totally different than the way that you have love for your child,” Tonia Haddix, an exotic animal broker, says at the beginning of “Chimp Crazy,” the documentary HBO series investigating the world of chimpanzee ownership. “If it’s your natural born child, it’s just natural because you actually gave birth to that kid. But when you adopt a monkey, the bond is much, much deeper.”

“Chimp Crazy” arrives in a summer of cultural and political obsession about the place of animals in our family lives. When JD Vance became the Republican vice-presidential nominee, his 2021 comment about “childless cat ladies” resurfaced, positioning them as adversaries of the traditional family. New York magazine published a special issue questioning the ethics of pet ownership, featuring a polarizing essay from an anonymous mother who neglected her cat once her human baby arrived. In the background of these stories, you can hear the echoes of an internet-wide argument that pits companion animals against human children, pet and tot forced into a psychic battle for adult recognition.

These dynamics feel supercharged since 2020, the year when American family life — that insular institution that is expected to provide for all human care needs — became positively airtight. The coronavirus pandemic exaggerated a wider trend toward domestic isolation : pet owners spending more time with their animals, parents more time with their children, everyone less time with one another — except perhaps online, where our domestic scenes collide in a theater of grievance and stress.

When a cat, a dog or certainly a chimp scampers through a family story, it knocks it off-kilter, revealing its hypocrisies and its harms. In “Chimp Crazy,” Haddix emerges as the avatar for all the contradictions of the domestic ideal of private home care: She loves her chimp “babies” with such obsession that she traps them (and herself) in a miserable diorama of family life.

Haddix, a 50-something woman who describes herself as the “Dolly Parton of Chimps,” believes that God chose her to be a caretaker. She was a registered nurse before she became a live-in volunteer at a ramshackle chimp breeding facility in Missouri, where she speaks of a male chimp named Tonka as if she is his mother. Haddix also has two human children; she just loves them less, and says so on television.

As she appoints herself the parent to an imprisoned wild animal, she asserts an idealized form of mothering — one she describes as selfless, unending and pure. “Chimp Crazy” is the story of just how ruinous this idea of love can be, for the woman and the ape.

Call it the ‘idiot box’, call it the ‘window to the world’, call it by whatever name, it is an undeniable fact that the television has come to rule the world in a powerful way. The television has developed as a major social force, shaping the growth of children, bringing new exposure to adults, and swaying public opinions.

It is a media serving in a versatile manner: as an advertising medium, an entertainment medium, a public discussion platform, a weather forecast station, a center for cultural arts and music, and as a source of news and education. Various studies have been undertaken to examine the power of television as a social force and they all underline the fact that the television has a major impact on society – sometimes in a positive way and sometimes in a negative way. Thesis Statement: The innumerable benefits wrought by the advent of television far outweigh the negative aspects.

The positive social impacts of television are many. Television is a like a window to the world from each and every home on the planet. It brings in live news and information from around the world and even from outer space and depths of oceans. It highlights social problems to create a public awareness. The programs on starvation in Africa, abuse of Iraqi prisoners and coverage of the Iraq war are recent programs that have helped create global awareness.

Reading about thousands of children starving in Africa or some other country is one thing; actually seeing the misery is quite another. Television news is different from newspaper and print media as it brings in exact color, sound, time sequences and feelings of events. In democracies television is used for election campaigning and also for public discussion of electoral issues thereby allowing people to make informed choices. Through live coverage of certain events, television makes us all eyewitnesses to crucial events around the world.

This promotes formation of individual opinion around the world. Television is often decried as a negative influence on the sexual attitudes and behavior of America’s adolescents. A national sample of adolescents who regularly watched the television program Friends were surveyed about an episode that portrayed a pregnancy resulting from condom failure. Of 506 adolescents (age range, 12-17) who were surveyed, at least 155 had viewed the episode; 65% of viewers remembered the condom failure. Among those who changed their perceptions of condom efficacy as a result of watching, similar proportions came to view condoms as either more or less effective than they had previously believed. Ten percent discussed condom efficacy with adults after watching the show. This study just illustrates the effect that television can have on society as a whole.

But those who argue that television is harmful often cite the finding that television is harmful to children. Studies do show that even children below three can be affected by television. (Singer 40). According to a study in the July issue of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, television viewing before the age of three may have adverse effects on subsequent cognitive development (Singer 40). The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children younger than two and only high quality, age-appropriate viewing thereafter. Moreover, television has been viewed as being used to create a materialistic culture. According to Christen Fitzerald, television has polluted society by introducing “different ways of being, dressing, speaking and acting – vulgar, egalitarian, and immoral”.

However, while it might be true that children below three years must be exposed to indiscriminate television viewing, Frederick J. Zimmerman, Ph.D., and Dimitri A Christakis, M.D., M.P.H., of the University of Washington, Seattle, have found that television viewing between ages three to five years is beneficial in terms of outcomes of reading recognition and short-term memory. They say that parents should learn to manage the context of television viewing to maximize its potential benefit for their children. Marie Winn, author of “The Plug-in: Television, Computers and Family Life” says that children are more affected by the time devoted to television watching than to the actual content of these programs.

Thus time spent on TV watching affects children a lot and its not about the content at all. Educational programming can develop young children’s socialization and learning skills. News, current events and historical programming can help make young people more aware of other cultures and people. Documentaries can help develop critical thinking about society and the world. Moreover, a study titled “Student Achievement in California Schools” it was found that “children of professional and semi-professionals, even those that viewed four or more hours a day, did much better than children of the skilled and unskilled who watched little or no television” (Berger 174).

As for arguments pointed out by Christian Fitzgerald regarding vulgar dressing, speaking and acting, one must remember that culture as a whole is evolving gradually. During this gradual process made things acceptable now that were unacceptable years ago.

Television also provides much needed escape and relaxation to children and adults. Television audiences can become awestruck with the beauty and grace of the arts or get caught up in the frenzy and excitement of an athletic event. Shrum says: “Entertainment provides at least three gratifications according to Berger. These three gratifications are: “a respite from the anxieties and pressures of everyday life; the opportunity to compare oneself with the demeanor, possessions and behavior of others; and a means of keeping up with what is transpiring in the world” (Berger 193). These gratifications have been particularly well documented in the case of television (Berger 193).

According to a research conducted by R. Gorney, D. Love and G. Steele (174), in which they studied the effects of a week’s viewing of five types of television programs, including those with predominantly helpful or hurtful content, on the aggressive mood and hurtful behavior of adult men. Their findings show that there is a “significant decrease in aggressive mood and lower levels of hurtful behavior in viewers of helpful programs”(Gorney, 174-177).

Further, television brings in the latest in ideas and information around the globe in the realms of health, science, and technology. Without advertisements on television, no one would know about new products in the market, the latest offers and jobs. Included in this category are new products and services that will make our life easier or safer, new recipes, important safety procedures, and even instructions on home improvement and repair. In today’s competitive, information-centered world, to stand still is to fall behind.

Further, critics of television generally make the following arguments: television debases the arts and audience tastes, undermines moral standards, encourages escapism, engages in economic exploitation, exhibits a liberal bias, sets up false images of reality and distorts reality through omission. () All these arguments come true depending on certain conditions and it is the responsibility of the television producers and policy makers of television programming to see to it that these accusations do not become the standard.

Although there are many moral issues related to media content, sex and violence create the greatest debates. Many consider casual sex a sin and leading to life-threatening disease and unwanted pregnancies. However, it should be remembered sex education through the media is largely responsible for the two-decade decline in the rate of unwanted pregnancies in the United States. (Davis 1). “Regarding violence on television, U.S. children typically see 16,000 murders on TV by the time they are 18” (Davis 1). Most of these murders appear to be without consequence and most are represented as the ready “solution” to a problem.

The results of one of the most extensive studies ever done on the subject of violence and TV were released in 2003. It has been concluded that those who as children were exposed to violent TV shows were much more likely to later be convicted of crime. (Williams 55) Researchers said that, “Media violence can affect any child from any family,” regardless of social class or parenting. Further, the study exposed that girls who watched a large amount of violence tended to exhibit hysterical behavior with their husbands and boys who grew up watching violence tended to become physically abusive husbands. A summary of much of the research and its consequences can be found in the book Visual Intelligence—Perception, Image, and Manipulation in Visual Communication by Ann Marie Seward Barry.

Thus we can conclude that while television viewing has both beneficial and harmful impacts on society, the benefits of television are overwhelmingly high. In order to maximize the benefits of television, it is necessary that television viewers are given the right to choose what they want to view from a free flow of information, and parental guidance is provided for youngsters in viewing programs that are beneficial to them.

With that time , you can learn several language as well as finish some studying course. On the other hand , television programme are not always suitable for all ages.Sometimes , there are some movies containing violence which affected the stormy phase of growing of children and teenagers and should not be watched ,even by some adults. It will be extremely dangerous if parents neglect their children to discover the TV programme themselves as they will immediately take influence of what they see . To rectify this situation , parents must supervise their children 's TV watching throughout their childhood and adolescence period. In the aspect of health , spending hours watching TV is harmful to your eyesight . In other words, kids spent most of their time watching television and not studying. However, as times passed, the channels of television changed. The invention of television gave us various benefits. It was helpful in providing the common man with a cheap mode of entertainment. As they are very affordable, everyone can now own television and get access to entertainment.

In addition, it keeps us updated on the latest happenings of the world. It is now possible to get news from the other corner of the world. Similarly, television also offers educational programs that enhance our knowledge about science and wildlife and more.

You can also say that television widens the exposure we get. It increases our knowledge about several sports, national events and more.

Yet, the concerned authority is really callous to the problems. Advertisement, sponsors, etc. are the sources of the economic structure of the different channels. Thus, the producers intend to draw the attention of the businessman by claiming the popularity of the channels. The inevitable result of this kind of commercial debasement is of Course disintegration that causes serious disbelief in the sphere of culture and education. Therefore, we must be conscious of the fact that television is not merely a media for entertainment; rather it is a source of important social and cultural messages.

In the modern age, television has become indispensable for everyone. None of the houses is complete without a television set as it renders an invaluable service (huge knowledge, entertainment etc) to the society.

Television is a good medium of providing information and knowledge, and make people aware with what is happening around the world. The things which we were not able to see before our eyes can now be seen on the television screen. It is due to the television that the children of today have huge spectrum of knowledge than their counterparts have in the past. Even an uneducated person can learns a lot and gets full knowledge about everything.

Our farmers, villagers, women and even the people who work as labour have been much benefited through the use of television. Their thinking ideologies, standard of living and means have improved a lot. Their visions and outlooks have undergone a great change, and have given a zoom to their way of thinking. In the schools, colleges and other educational institutions, the Television has become very popular as it is a good medium for learning and entertainment, and very helpful for studying many subjects because there are many education channel available for students who teach in live classes.
