My Countrymen! 6 September 1965 is the day when India attacked Lahore, the city of vivacious and lively people of Pakistan.

When in 1947, undivided India got partitioned into two, the people of Jammu and Kashmir, with 95% Muslim population, proclaimed to join Pakistan but India ignoring the decision of Kashmiri people, entered its army into Kashmir. Upon this, Kashmiris defied this occupation and started struggle against Indian occupation. In some time, they succeeded to regain some area which is known as Azad Kashmir today. Indian Prime Minister at that time Jawahar Lal Nehru got ceasefire on assurance of organizing a referendum in Kashmir. According to the referendum, Kashmiris would be able to use their right of self-determination and choose to merge with Pakistan or India and this will be accepted to both Pakistan and India.

This was a elementary and just action. As when a dispute could be solved without a war, then it is better to stop the war.

But it never happened!

And then Kashmiris started their struggle to get their freedom back. In the wake of freedom struggle by Kashmiris, on September 6 1965, India waged a war on Pakistan. Tanks, cannons attacked Lahore in the darkness of night but self-respecting and lively people of Pakistan, along brave Pakistan Army made this attempt failed.

My countrymen! Pakistan president at that time, General Ayub Khan announced Jehad against Indian aggression. In the morning of September 6, 1965, he said: “India forgot that he challenged a nation who recites La Ilaha Illallah and they will respond befittingly.”

Indian army had entered some areas of Lahore but Pakistani brave soldiers, army men and people made them back off. Pakistan Airforce pilots destroyed 22 Indian jet fighters and gave heavy loss to the enemy.

Many of Pakistani soldiers got martyrdom in which Major Aziz Bhatti Shaheed’s name is on the top. Major Khadim Hussain and Lieutenant Iftakhar showed their braveness at Qasoor, Hadhiyara and Wagha.

In memory of those brave fighters of Pakistan, we observe September 6 as Defence Day of Pakistan every year. Each Pakistani youth and child offers Salam to martyrs of Pak Army.

جناب صدر معزز سامعین السلام علیکم! آج میری تقریر کا عنوان یوم دفاع پر روشنی ڈالنا ہے۔ ۶ستمبر ۱۹۶۵ء پاکستان کی قومی تاریخ میں وہ تاریخ ساز دن ہے جب قوم سو رہی تھی لیکن پاک سرحد کی نگہبان آنکھیں جاگ رہی تھیں۔ وطن کے سپاہیوں کے لئے اپنی وفاؤں کا عہد پورا کرنے کا وقت آ گیا تھا۔ ہر بچہ، جوان، بوڑھا سر پر کفن باندھے اپنی بہادر افواج کے شانہ بشانہ ملک کے دفاع کے لئے دشمن کے مقابل تھا۔

اس دن پاکستان کے شہیدوں جری جوانوں نے اپنی سرحدوں کے بہادر اور غیور پاسبانوں کی فہرست میں اپنا نام رقم کیا۔ ان کا تن، من، دھن دیس پر قربان تھا۔ اب ہر سپاہی ناقابلِ شکست فصیل تھا، جس نے دشمن کی پیش قدمی روک دی۔ ان کی شجاعت کے ناقابلِ یقین کارناموں کی کوئی نظیر پیش نہیں کی جا سکتی۔ ان کی فرض شناسی اور حب الوطنی جدید جنگوں کی تاریخ میں درخشندہ مقام پر فائز کی جا سکتی ہے۔

یہ ایک تاریخی معرکہ تھا جس میں ہمت اور حوصلوں کی بے مثال کہانیوں نے جنم لیا۔ پوری دنیا یہ دیکھ کر حیران رہ گئی کہ پاکستان کے عوام اور افواج دشمن کے عزائم کے آگے سیسہ پلائی دیوار بن گئے اور اس کے منصوبے خاک میں ملا دئے۔ افواجِ پاکستان کے شانہ بشانہ ایک چھوٹی مگر خود دار قوم نے ثابت کیا کہ جدید اسلحہ اور فوجی برتری ہی نہیں بلکہ قوتِ ایمانی ، اتحاد، جرأت، اپنے مقصد پر یقینِ محکم اور دھرتی سے محبت ہی وہ جذبہ ہے جو کسی بھی جنگ میں کامیابی اور سرفرازی کا سبب بنتے ہیں۔

جب فوجیں سرحد کی طرف جاتیں تو بوڑھے مرد اور عورتیں سڑک کے کنارے ان کی سلامتی کے لئے دعائیں مانگتے، ان کی مدد کے طریقے پوچھتے اور بچے جذبہ عقیدت سے سلیوٹ کرتے۔ بہنیں اللہ سے ان کی حفاظت کے لئے دعائیں مانگتی۔

اے راہِ حق کے شہیدو ، وفا کی تصویرو تمہیں وطن کی ہوائیں سلام کہتی ہیں

ساتھیو! جنگوں کی تاریخ میں دوسری جنگ عظیم دوئم کے بعد ٹینکوں کی سب سے بڑی لڑائی سیالکوٹ کے ایک علاقے چونڈہ کے مقام پر لڑی گئی جہاں طاقت کے نشے میں چور بھارتی فوج چھ سو ٹينک لے کر پاکستان ميں داخل ہوگئی تھی۔ پاکستان فوج کی زبردست جوابی کارروائی نے دشمن کے ۴۵ ٹینک تباہ کر دیے اور کئی ٹینک قبضے میں لے لیے تھے۔ اسی طرح پانچ فیلڈ بندوقیں قبضہ میں لے کر بہت سارے فوجی قیدی بھی بنائے گئے۔ جنگ کا پانسہ پلٹتا دیکھ کر بھارتی فوجی حواس باختہ ہوگئے اور ٹینک چھوڑ کر فرار ہونے لگے تو پاک فوج نے موقع سے فائدہ اٹھاتے ہوئے دشمن کے علاقے میں کئی چوکیوں پر قبضہ کر لیا۔ اسی لیے چونڈہ کے مقام کو بھارتی ٹینکوں کیلئے ٹینکوں کا قبرستان کہا جاتا ہے۔ مگر سامعین ہماری افواج نہ صرف جنگ کے دوران معرکوں میں حصہ لیتی ہیں بلکہ امن کے دور میں بھی قوم کی تعمیر میں حصہ ڈالتی ہیں۔ سیکیورٹی فورسز اکثر اوقات قدرتی آفات سے متاثرہ علاقوں میں امداد پہنچاتی ہیں اور سیلابوں اور زلزلوں کے دوران رلیف کی خدمات سرانجام دیتی ہیں۔ فوج کے زیرِ انتظام چلنے والے کئی ادارے مثلاً اسکول، کالج، ہسپتال سویلینز کو بھی گراں قدر خدمات فراہم کرتے ہیں۔ اللہ پاک ہمارے وطن اور محافظوں کی مدد فرمائے۔ آمین۔ آپ سب کی سماعتوں کا شکریہ

وہی قومیں دنیا میں اپنا وجود برقرار رکھتی اور زندہ رہتی ہیں جو اپنا مضبوط دفاع رکھتی ہیں ، پاکستانی قوم نے بھی6 ستمبر 1965ء کی شب غیرعلانیہ جنگ کا مقابلہ کر کے ثابت کر دیا کہ وہ کسی بھی جارحیت کا منہ توڑ جواب دینے کی بھر پور صلاحیت رکھتی ہے ۔6 ستمبر 1965 ء کی شب ہمسایہ ملک نے رات کی تاریکی میں پاکستان پر حملہ کیا لیکن سرحدوں کے محافظ جاگ رہے تھے ، لاہورکے جم خانہ میں چائے پینے کے دشمن کے خواب چکنا چور کر دیے ،قوم اپنی افواج کے شانہ بشانہ کھڑی ہو گئی ،خوراک اور دیگر سامان کے ہی ڈھیر نہیں لگائے ،نوجوانوں کی ٹولیاں دشمن سے دو دو ہاتھ کرنے گھروں سے نکل آئیں ، آرمی چیف کے اس پیغام پر کہ ہر فرد ایک پیسہ دے وہ ایک ٹینک دینگے ، قوم نے بڑھ چڑھ کر چندہ پیش کر دیا ۔ کھیم کرن اورچونڈہ میں شکست کے بعد دشمن نے سرگودھا پر فضائی حملہ کیا تو شاہینوں نے پلک جھپکتے چار جہاز تباہ کر کے دشمن فضائیہ کی کمر توڑ دی۔ جنگ ستمبر میں بی آر بی نہر پاکستان کی پہلی دفاعی لائن ثابت ہوئی ۔پاکستان امن پسند ملک ہے لیکن جب بھی جنگ مسلط کی گئی پاک افواج نے پیشہ ورانہ مہارتوں ، جرات و بہادری اور قربانیوں کی نئی نئی داستانیں رقم کر دیں۔

There were so many army officials and soldiers who led their lives in the way of this defense as they preferred losing their lives but didn’t let Indian army get success in their dirty intentions of conquering Lahore and Punjab.

The Army officers like Captain Sarwar Shaheed, Major Tufail Shaheed, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed, Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed, Sarwar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed, Lance Naik Muhammad Mehfooz Shaheed, and Havaldar Lalak Jan Shaheed gave sacrifices of their life for Pakistan and were awarded with “Nishan-e-Haider” for their acts of exceptional bravery. 6 september speech in urdu.

On 6th September Defence day (yaum e difa) is celebrated as a national day in Pakistan to memorize the sacrifices made by Pakistani brave soldiers during saving their country. The history of 6th september always gives Goosebumps as this reminds about the great and steady soldiers who gave their lives for the sake of Pakistan.

On 6th September 1965 Indian army crossed the international border and entered to attack the Pakistan. This was totally unfair because this was a surprise attack and they attacked at night. The purpose of Indian army was to completely destroy the Pakistani nation and their soldiers but it was their mistake. India’s attack on Lahore, Pakistan was held and beaten back with heavy losses. The Pakistani army showed great bravery and fought without thinking about their lives. There was air force army in the ground which helped the Pakistani soldiers to roll it back.

In that day the Pakistan government declared the holiday in the whole Pakistan and the other Muslim countries appreciate the Pakistan country for the success. In this day the Pakistan government arranges many functions.

Two days later after a great loss India again attacked on Sialkot, Pakistan. It was very hard struggle fought over many days because this time Indian army has made itself stronger than before. In the end Pakistan launched it own counter attack and captured India. The war ended with great loss of Pakistani great soldiers. Pakistani soldiers served their lives for the name and love of their country and Pakistan was brought to another level of bravery and respect.

On this day Pakistan loss many lives but this loss gave new life to Pakistan. In Pakistan 6th September is always celebrated by remembering their loved one who served their lived and by parading for Pakistan. The 6th September is a day of thank giving. Allah gives us more strength, courage and determination to protect our country as our great soldiers have done. Now Pakistan has many higher technical 4rth generation stealth weapons. In which we have 4rth generation fighter jet named thunder 3rd block and some have submarine.

Schools are competing with cell phones. Here's how they think they could win

Isabella Pires first noticed what she calls the "gradual apathy pandemic" in eighth grade. Only a handful of classmates registered for service projects she helped organize at her Massachusetts school. Even fewer actually showed up.

When she got to high school last fall, Isabella found the problem was even worse: a lackluster Spirit Week and classes where students seldom spoke.

In some ways, it's as if students "just care less and less about what people think, but also somehow care more," said Isabella, 14. Some teens, she said, no longer care about appearing disengaged, while others are so afraid of ridicule they keep to themselves. She blames social media and the lingering isolation of the post-COVID era.

Educators say their tried and true lesson plans are no longer enough to keep students engaged at a time of struggling mental health, shortened attention spans, reduced attendance and worsening academic performance. At the crux of these challenges? Addiction to cell phones. Now, adults are trying new strategies to reverse the malaise.

Cell phone bans are gaining traction, but many say they're not enough. They argue for alternative stimulation: steering students outdoors or toward extracurriculars to fill time they might otherwise spend alone online. And students need outlets, they say, to speak about taboo topics without fear of being " canceled " on social media.

"To get students engaged now, you have to be very, very creative," said Wilbur Higgins, lead English teacher at Dartmouth High School, where Isabella will be a sophomore this fall.

Lock them up

Cell phone pouches, lockers and bins have grown in popularity to help enforce device bans.

John Nguyen, a chemistry teacher in California, invented a pouch system because he was so distressed by bullying and fights on phones during class, often without adults interfering. Many teachers are afraid to confront students using phones during lessons, Nguyen said, and others have given up trying to stop it.

At Nguyen's school, students lock their phones in neoprene pouches during classes or even all day. A teacher or principal's magnetic key unlocks the pouches.

It doesn't matter how dynamic the lesson, said Nguyen, who teaches at Marina Valley High School and now markets the pouches to other schools. "There's nothing that can compete with the cell phone."

Do something (else)

Some schools are locking up smartwatches and wireless headphones, too. But the pouches don't work once the final bell rings.

So in Spokane, Washington, schools are ramping up extracurriculars to compete with phones after hours.

An initiative launching this month, " Engage IRL "—in real life—aims to give every student something to look forward to after the school-day grind, whether it's a sport, performing arts or a club.

"Isolating in your home every day after school for hours on end on a personal device has become normalized," Superintendent Adam Swinyard said.

Students can create clubs around interests like board games and knitting or partake in neighborhood basketball leagues. Teachers will help students make a plan to get involved during back-to-school conferences, the district says.

"From 3 to 5:30 you are in a club, you're in a sport, you're at an activity," instead of on a phone, Swinyard said. (The district has a new ban on phones during class, but will allow them after school.)

At a time of high absenteeism , he also hopes the activities will be the extra push some students need to attend school. In a Gallup poll conducted last November, only 48% of middle or high school students said they felt motivated to go to school, and only 52% felt they did something interesting every day. The poll was funded by the Walton Family Foundation, which also supports environmental journalism at AP.

Vivian Mead, a rising senior in Spokane, said having more after-school activities helps but won't work for everyone. "There's definitely still some people who just want to be alone, listen to their music, do their own thing, or, like, be on their phone," said Vivian, 17.

Her 15-year-old sister, Alexandra, said morning advisory sessions have improved participation in the drama club that keeps the sisters busy. "It forces everyone, even if they don't want to get involved, to have to try something, and maybe that clicks," she said.

Get outside

Thirteen middle schools in Maine adopted a similar approach, bringing students outdoors for 35,000 total hours during a chosen week in May.

It's empowering for students to connect with each other in nature, away from screens, said Tim Pearson, a physical education and health teacher. His students at Dedham School participated in the statewide "Life Happens Outside" challenge.

Teachers adapted their lessons to be taught outdoors, and students bonded in the open air during lunch and recess. At night, about half of Dedham's students camped, incentivized by a pizza party. Several students told Pearson they camped out again after the challenge.

"Whether they had phones with them or not, they're building fires, they're putting up their tents," Pearson said. "They're doing things outside that obviously are not on social media or texting."

Plea to parents

Parents must also make changes to their family's cell phone culture, some teachers say. At home, Ohio teacher Aaron Taylor bars cellular devices when his own children have friends over.

And when kids are at school, parents shouldn't distract them with check-in texts throughout the day, he said.

"Students are so tied to their families," said Taylor, who teaches at Westerville North High School, near Columbus. "There's this anxiety of not being able to contact them, rather than appreciating the freedom of being alone for eight hours or with your friends."

Fight fears of being 'canceled'

Some say other forces behind teen disengagement are only amplified by the cell phone . The divisive political climate often makes students unwilling to participate in class, when anything they say can rocket around the school in a messaging app.

Taylor's high school English students tell him they don't talk in class because they don't want to be " canceled "—a term applied to public figures who are silenced or boycotted after offensive opinions or speech.

"I'm like, 'Well, who's canceling you? And why would you be canceled? We're talking about 'The Great Gatsby,'" not some controversial political topic, he said.

Students "get very, very quiet" when topics such as sexuality, gender or politics come up in novels, said Higgins, the Massachusetts English teacher. "Eight years ago, you had hands shooting up all over the place. Nobody wants to be labeled a certain way anymore or to be ridiculed or to be called out for politics."

So Higgins uses websites such as Parlay that allow students to have online discussions anonymously. The services are expensive, but Higgins believes the class engagement is worth it.

"I can see who they are when they're responding to questions and things, but other students can't see," Higgins said. "That can be very, very powerful."

Alarmed at her peers' disengagement, Isabella, Higgins' student, wrote an opinion piece in her school's newspaper.

"Preventing future generations from joining this same downward cycle is up to us," she wrote.

A comment on the post highlighted the challenge, and what's at stake.

"All in all," the commenter wrote, "why should we care?"

میرے عزیزو! اسلامی جمہوریہ پاکستان کا یومِ دفاع ہمیں ہر سال شہداء کی یاد دلاتا ہے۔ ۶ ستمبر کو پہلے سے ترتیب شدہ حکمتِ عملی کے مطابق بھارتی فوج نے لاہور کے قریب روڈ کاٹنے کے مقصد سے پنجاب میں بین الاقوامی سرحد عبور کی۔ یہ حملہ پاکستانی کمانڈروں کے لئے حیرت کا باعث بنا۔ مگر سرفروشوں نے سر پر کفن باندھ لیا تھا۔ وہ موت کو گلے لگانے کے لئے بھارتی فوج پر ٹوٹ پڑے۔ یہ وہ زبردست دفاع تھا جس میں غیر معمولی قوتوں سے پاکستان کی مدد فرمائی گئی۔

ہمارے بڑوں نے بتایا جب ملک جنگ کے دہانے پر کھڑا تھا میری ماں بہن بھی جنگ میں مردوں کےشانہ بشانہ موجود تھیں۔ میری دھرتی کو ان بیٹوں نے لہو دیا جس سے یہ آج بھی سراب ہے۔ان قربانیوں کو فراموش کبھی نہیں کیا جاسکتا؀

ہر سال ستمبر کی ۶ تاریخ ، ۱۹۶۵ کے اس دفاع کے یادگار کے طور پر ہمارے سامنے آتی ہے۔ ان نوجوانوں نے بھی زندگی میں خواب دیکھے تھے لیکن کتنے ہی جوانوں نے اپنی اولادوں کو نظرانداز کرکے شہادت کا جام نوش کرلیا۔

صدرِ محترم!!! سارا عالم جانتا ہے ہندو ایک مکار قوم ہے اور شیطانی منصوبہ بندی میں بہت تیز ہے۔ پاکستان کا دفاع ہمیشہ سے ناقابلِ تسخیر رہا ہے۔ ہماری قوم اور ہماری افواج ایک ساتھ ایک سوچ و مقصد کے ساتھ پاکستان کی سالمیت پر کھڑی ہیں۔

اے دشمنو! سن لو! یہ ملک ہمارا ہے اور ہم اس کے محافظ اس کے خادم ہیں۔ اگر تم نے اس کی طرف ٹیڑھی نظر سے دیکھنے کی خواہش بھی کی تو ہم تمہاری آنکھیں پپوٹوں سے نکال باہر کریں گے۔ جو شعلے میری دھرتی کی جانب اٹھیں گے ہم لہو سے ان کو بجھا دیں گے؀

Fed Chair Jerome Powell signals "time has come" for interest rate cuts

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said "the time has come" for the central bank to adjust its monetary policy, signaling that rate cuts could soon lower borrowing costs for American consumers and businesses.

Powell, who spoke at an annual conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, didn't disclose specifics about when a rate cut could arrive, or its size, although economists have penciled in a reduction at the Fed's September 18 meeting. The federal funds rate now stands in a range of 5.25% to 5.5%, its highest level in 23 years. 

In conveying that the Fed is likely to start cutting its benchmark rate, Powell cited some weakening in the labor market, as well as progress in battling high inflation. A slowdown in hiring and an  uptick in the unemployment rate  last month heightened concerns the Fed could mistake in the other direction, keeping rates too high for too long, throttling growth and plunging the economy into recession.

"We do not seek or welcome further cooling in labor market conditions," Powell said in his speech.

"The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks," he said.

Powell also signaled the Federal Reserve is increasingly confident that inflation will continue to cool, eventually reaching the bank's goal of a 2% annual rate, even with a reduction in borrowing costs. In previous speeches, Powell had raised concerns that rate cuts could spur inflation to flare up, erasing the gains the Fed had made in taming the hottest price increases in four decades. 

"With an appropriate dialing back of policy restraint, there is good reason to think that the economy will get back to 2% inflation while maintaining a strong labor market," Powell said.

Wall Street surged after Powell's comments, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumping 378 points, or 0.9%, to 41,091. The S&P 500 gained 1.1% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite rose 1.5%.

"Powell has rung the bell for the start of the cutting cycle," said Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, in an email. "The Federal Reserve now has strong confidence about inflation's path forward — it is time to shift to the other side of the dual mandate, and labor market risks now have their full attention."

How big of a rate cut? 

One question left unanswered by Powell's speech was the potential size of a September rate cut. At the moment, about 3 in 4 economists polled by financial services firm FactSet are forecasting a reduction of 0.25 percentage points. 

But if the August jobs data comes in weaker than expected, that could increase the chances of a bigger cut of 0.5 percentage points, experts noted. The August jobs report will be released on September 6. 

"We continue to expect a cautious [0.25 percentage point] rate cut, but Powell underscored a view we have held that the Fed has room to ramp up the pace of rate cuts if the labor market deteriorates unexpectedly," Kathy Bostjancic, chief economist for Nationwide, noted in an email, referring to basis points.

She added that she expects additional rate cuts before year-end, bringing the total reductions to 0.75 percentage points, adding, "but we see the possibility of more rate reduction if employment growth slows abruptly."

How will this impact mortgage rates?

Already, mortgage rates have dropped to their lowest levels in 15 months, ahead of expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut its benchmark interest rate next month for the first time in four years.

But a rate cut of 0.25 to 0.5 percentage points will likely only make small changes in borrowing costs for consumers, noted Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate, in an email. Even so, mortgage rates could continue to decline , especially if inflation continues to fall and the job market shows some weakness, experts have noted.

"From a consumer perspective, it's important to note that lower interest rates will be a gradual process," he said. "The trip down is likely to be much slower than the series of interest rate hikes which quickly pushed the federal funds rate higher by 5.25 percentage points in 2022 and 2023."

Even though mortgage rates are already declining, there hasn't yet been a meaningful change in credit card or auto loan rates, he added.

We will do everything we can to support a strong labor market as we make further progress toward price stability. Today, the labor market has cooled considerably from its formerly overheated state. The unemployment rate began to rise over a year ago and is now at 4.3 percent — still low by historical standards, but almost a full percentage point above its level in early 2023. The upside risks to inflation have diminished. And the downside risks to employment have increased. After a pause earlier this year, progress toward our 2 percent objective has resumed. My confidence has grown that inflation is on a sustainable path back to 2 percent. So let me wrap up by emphasizing that the pandemic economy has proved to be unlike any other and that there remains much to be learned from this extraordinary period.

Speaking in his most closely watched speech of the year, Jerome H. Powell, the chair of the Federal Reserve, clearly signaled on Friday that the central bank was poised to cut interest rates in September.

And while Mr. Powell stopped short of giving a clear hint at just how large that move might be, he forcefully underscored that the central bank stands prepared to adjust policy to protect the job market from weakening further and to keep the economy on a path for a soft landing.

“The time has come for policy to adjust,” Mr. Powell said during the Kansas City Fed’s annual conference at Jackson Hole in Wyoming. “The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook and the balance of risks.”

He then added: “We will do everything we can to support a strong labor market as we make further progress toward price stability.”

Mr. Powell’s speech was his firmest declaration yet that the Fed is turning a corner in its fight against inflation. After more than a year of holding interest rates at 5.3 percent, the highest level in more than two decades, officials finally have enough confidence to change their stance by cutting rates at their Sept. 17-18 meeting.

Policymakers have been using those high rates to try to cool the economy and, by doing so, wrestle down rapid inflation. But as price increases slow substantially and the job market shows signs of wobbling, officials no longer need to hit the brakes quite so hard.

Gold climbs as traders position for Powell's speech

Gold prices gained on Friday as investors positioned themselves for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech that could shed more light on a potential U.S. September interest rate cut.

Bullion fell more than 1% in the previous session, setting it on course for a 0.3% weekly decline, pressured by a rebound in the dollar and higher Treasury yields.

"I think it's position-taking ahead of the expected rate cut, which I think is now looking like almost a certainty in September," said independent analyst Ross Norman.

Traders are expecting a 74% chance of a 25 basis points cut in September, while 26% expect a deeper 50 bps cut. Gold tends to thrive in a low interest rate environment as it yields no interest by itself. (FEDWATCH)

"If Powell now hints at stronger interest rate cuts as a result, we could see new record highs for gold," Commerzbank said in a note.

"Given that the market has already priced in Fed rate cuts of around 100 basis points by the end of the year, the bar for a dovish surprise is likely to be set quite high."

Powell is expected to deliver speech at the annual central banking conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming at 1400 GMT.

Meanwhile, India's silver imports are on course to nearly double this year due to rising demand from solar panel and electronics makers and as investors bet the metal will give better returns than gold, leading importers said on Friday.
