Your PhD, what next?
Those who've completed a Doctorate are finding more opportunities to work outside of academia than ever before - discover the types of PhD jobs available and what other PhD graduates go on to do
What jobs can I do with a PhD?
The most common roles for PhD graduates are:
- teaching professionals
- natural and social science professionals
- research and development (R&D) and other research professionals
- therapy professionals
- business, research and administrative professionals.
Although getting an academic job is a natural step for many PhD graduates, a greater number of opportunities exist outside of teaching and education .
For instance, a significant amount of PhD graduates work in healthcare (14.9%), and construction , engineering and research and development (11.1%). This has perhaps been helped by private sector companies becoming more research-orientated in recent years.
As well as the medical profession, research scientists can also specialise in life sciences , maths and physical sciences .
If you've aspirations to become a clinical or educational psychologist , you'll need to have studied a specific taught Doctorate in either clinical (DClinPsy or ClinPsyD) or educational (DEdPsy) psychology.
How do I get started in academia?
Those graduating with a PhD often struggle to secure a permanent academic job immediately. To give yourself the best chance, contact as many other academics as possible in your specialist field.
You may then be presented with the opportunity to become a teaching or research fellow, though this is likely to be on a short-term contract with a view to permanent employment.
You may find opportunities on individual university websites or at Jobs.ac.uk . You can also read about getting an academic job for more information and advice.
Can I get a non-academic job?
There are many ways to boost your chances of landing non-academic PhD jobs. You should:
- build a network of contacts to help you unearth 'hidden' job vacancies
- gain relevant work experience in your chosen field
- search for graduate jobs
- use social media to join in discussions with like-minded academics and share your research and opinions.
It's also worth regularly checking sector-specific websites and publications for job adverts, such as:
- Nature Careers
- New Scientist Jobs
- Science Careers
- Technojobs - PhD jobs
- The Economist
- The Psychologist (The British Psychological Society)
How do I sell my PhD to employers?
When applying for non-academic PhD jobs, you must demonstrate how your knowledge and expertise will benefit the employer. Focus on the transferable skills that the PhD has helped to enhance, such as:
- communication skills - you'll have given many presentations , lectures or seminars
- creative thinking - PhD students are often asked to think outside the box
- management ability - as well as managing your own time and workload, you may have managed a small team of research assistants or mentored undergraduate students
- problem-solving skills - during your PhD, you'll have tackled and solved numerous research problems.
For more guidance, see applying for jobs .
What do other PhD graduates do?
Of the PhD graduates in employment 15 months after graduation in 2020/21, just over a fifth (21.3%) found work in education - as higher and secondary education teaching professionals. The majority therefore chose to pursue non-academic careers.
PhD destinations data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA).

Career Opportunities Post PhD in the UK
October 2022
Due to its reputation for providing high-quality education and research-intensive universities, the United Kingdom is one of the most popular study abroad destinations in the world. Students can pursue their study in a wide range of scientific, humanistic, technological, subjects at UK institutions. Oxford University, Imperial College London, Leeds University, and Coventry University are a few of the top PhD institutions in the UK.
PhD programme graduates have the opportunity to pursue rewarding employment in the future. A PhD student's annual pay in the UK ranges from 35,000 to 48,000 British pound sterling. Additionally, during their PhD programme, students get monthly stipends and maintenance costs.
Why study PhD in the UK?
Here are a few reasons why one must choose to pursue a Doctoral degree in the UK:
1. Financial Assistance: A variety of government agencies, nonprofit grant providers, universities, businesses, and other institutions may give financial assistance to international students who are enrolled in PhD programmes in the UK . Students can rely on financial assistance to meet their tuition costs as well as certain additional costs.
2. Industry Experience: Most esteemed universities that offer PhD programs provide both academic research training and experience in the industry. For international students who plan to pursue careers in a variety of industries after earning their PhDs in Science, Business, Management, or the Arts , this might be advantageous.
3. Research Framework: PhD pursuits can benefit greatly from the overall research structure for their programmes in the UK. The PhD typically takes about 3 - 4 years. Moreover, there is a superb foundation for outstanding multidisciplinary research, which several committed research-intensive universities have replicated.
4. Tax-Free Stipend: International PhD students typically get a tax-free remuneration of between 25,000 and 30,200 GBP. Since the PhD stipends and studentships are tax-free, students get their full monthly salary as a stipend.
PhD Stipends Available to International Students in the UK
In the UK, there are essentially three main kinds of stipend PhDs. The students may get their stipends or wages through teaching assistantship, a research assistantship, or via a studentship.
1. Graduate Teaching Assistantships: The PhD students are expected to help in the teaching of several courses during their programme as part of their GTAs, or Graduate Teaching Assistantships. This may entail marking a few student tutorials, monitoring various lab procedures, and offering help to various undergraduates during office hours. You will also be required to teach a specific segment of the course on your own if you seek for a graduate student assistantship.
2. Research Assistantships: In order to earn a UK PhD wage, students pursuing research assistantships in the UK will help the professor in their department with their research. Students' PhD supervisor will typically also be the professor they are working for. Additionally, the research that the students conduct will be relevant to your own PhD study.
3. Stipend/ Studentship: A stipend, which is given to doctorate students in order to fund their studies, is regarded as a non-repayable award. A portion of the students' tuition will be paid for by the studentship. A stipend, on the other hand, is intended to pay for the student's living expenses. This might include costs for things like rent, bills, food, and simple travel. Stipends are not subject to any obligations or taxes, unlike Research Assistantships or Graduate Teaching Assistantships.
Employment Opportunities for PhD students in the UK:
Post completion of a PhD degree in the UK , graduates may look forward to rewarding professions. In the commercial and research-based sectors including education, technology, health, science, etc., PhD graduates might well be recognized working well.
A few high paying and lucrative job roles are listed as follows:
- Associate Professor - Avg Annual Salary: INR 49.44 Lakhs
- Anthropologist - Avg Annual Salary: INR 56.22 Lakhs
- Principal Scientist - Avg Annual Salary: INR 64.45 Lakhs
- Historian - Avg Annual Salary: INR 77.26 Lakhs
- Systems Engineer - Avg Annual Salary: INR 91.56 Lakhs
How to seek employment after a PhD in the UK?

It takes a lot of research to get a job after receiving a PhD. After receiving their PhDs, students have the option of entering the fields of science, the arts, technology, management, business administration, etc. Graduates have a bright future in the UK, where the average PhD wage is above 45000 GBP.

Post graduate opportunities
Development programmes for PhDs and postdocs who want to make a difference .
If you are enthusiastic and have a strong interest in healthcare, we have a wide range of programmes for PhD and p ostdoc candidates from a scientific, research, medical or consulting background.
From Esprit, our leading global talent development programme, through to our R&D development programme, which trains the next generation of vaccine scientists, we need the very best talent to help us make an impact on people’s health across the world. Explore how we can drive progress together.
Postdoctoral R&D
Are you an exceptional Postdoc or PhD scientist with strategic decision-making skills? If you would like to work on critical R&D challenges in the pre-competitive space, then consider joining our postdoctoral R&D programme.
What will the programme be like and what will I learn?
You can expect to be working on the critical R&D challenges in the pre-competitive space, providing the opportunity for publications in high-impact journals and presentation opportunities while rounding out your training with a deeper understanding of translation of drug discovery and development to medicines or vaccines of value for patients.
At the start of the programme, you will work with your supervisor to further a programme of research with mutually agreed timelines, milestones, objectives, accountability, and duration (up to three years).
During this time, you will have access to our extensive R&D engine, including our tools, technologies, libraries, samples and events.
On the programme you will:
- Be at the cutting edge of science
- Understand how we are bridging the gap from target identification to medicine or vaccines for patients in need
- Be part of a multi-functional drug research and development organisation working on high-risk, cutting-edge science, focused on resolving critical R&D challenges
- Be prepared for a career in industry, government, a non-profit and/or academia
Eligibility
We are looking for exceptional PhD scientists with strategic decision-making skills. Proven scientific and theoretical capability, together with high levels of innovation, creativity, and the ability to solve complex problems are required.
When can I start?
Postdoc positions will be available throughout the year specific to each project. Please search for openings using our search and apply tool.
I've always wanted to work in an area where I would be able to make a difference and when searching for postdocs GSK was an ideal fit. During the postdoc programme I have been able to apply and further my expertise in microphysiological systems / organ on a chip technology in addition to gaining new skills. I have also been able to directly contribute to the drug discovery and development pipeline and learn about how the different areas work together to develop new medicines through the vast networking opportunities. Nikita Postdoctoral Research Associate, R&D
I applied for the GSK Postdoctoral programme because I wanted to carry out exploratory research in an environment with clear goals to deliver benefits to patients. Being part of the programme has been an amazing opportunity to work at the interface of academia and industry and to get the best out of both of those environments. If you are an exceptional PhD scientist with a background in immunology or a related field, you could join our world-class Immunology Catalyst R&D facility.
What is the Immunology Catalyst?
The Immunology Catalyst is our world class R&D facility in Stevenage. Leading academic immunologists work here alongside GSK’s scientists whilst pursuing their own independent research programmes. This is an opportunity to join them for up to three years.
About the programme
As a postdoctoral fellow at the Immunology Catalyst, you will be mentored by a world-class academic immunologist. They will support you in developing the skills to become an independent scientific investigator. You will have the opportunity to publish in scientific journals and to develop a deep understanding of drug discovery and development. At the start of your post-doctoral, you will work with your supervisor to design a programme of research with mutually agreed timelines, milestones, objectives, and responsibilities.
What will the programme prepare you for?
This Immunology Catalyst training programme will prepare you for a career in academia, industry, or in a regulatory or non-profit healthcare organisation.
