You have spent months researching and identifying the best engineering schools, studying for and completing the SATs, GRE, or other standardized tests, and filling out tedious college applications. You are on the verge of burnout when it hits you: you have to write a personal statement.

How important is it to write a great personal statement? Ask the admissions committee, and they’ll tell you that writing a personal statement is like applying for a job. Stephen J Aguilar, an assistant professor of education at USC, reported in 2020 to Inside Higher Ed that a personal statement should be less revealing and more persuasive. At its core, the personal statement needs to answer these two questions:

• Why are you applying here?
• How do your interests and experiences align with the program or the faculty you’ve identified?

However, the importance of reading and understanding the question prompts cannot be overstated. For example, the University of Iowa College of Engineering, which places 97 percent of its undergraduates in jobs post-graduation and currently has 284 master’s and doctoral students, goes one step further to differentiate personal statements from statements of purpose .

This institution wants to know in the statement of purpose , “Why is this program a good fit for you?” By contrast, the personal statement elicits answers to the question: “Who are you?” and allows applicants to explain themselves to admissions committees regarding academic achievements and life events that have shaped them and will positively influence the campus community.

That said, a personal statement is not just an essay. It has to be intelligent, engaging, typo-free, and capable of convincing admissions reviewers that you are a better fit for their program. Fret not. With lots of research and preparation, you can submit a college essay that reflects your passion and capabilities.

How Is a Personal Statement Evaluated?

The title “personal statement” is generally synonymous with college essays. However, some admissions professionals use it to refer more specifically to written statements that explore applicants’ program readiness and intentions if admitted. The purpose of these statements for engineering school applicants is three-fold.

First, colleges want to know that they can write well, and not just from a technical perspective. Of course, grammar matters, but perhaps more important is the ability to communicate ideas.

Second, engineering schools want to know who a student is—the nuggets that are not conveyed through a conventional application or school transcripts. Finally, colleges want to ensure applicants are familiar with and committed to the program. The best personal statements fulfill these goals, often in 700 words or less.

Six Tips for Writing a Stellar Engineering School Personal Statement

1. Do the research

It may sound simplistic, but one of the most important (and often overlooked) steps toward getting into the right school is taking the time to research a prospective engineering program, review its admissions policies and—this cannot be overstated—read and reread its application essay prompt. Candidates who don’t sufficiently answer an institution’s question or convey some misunderstanding about the prompt or its expectations are unlikely to be admitted.

Prospective students completing the Common Application should take the time to contact each engineering school they are applying to inquire about additional admissions requirements. The Princeton Review emphasizes that a personal statement should not repeat a previously discussed part of your application, nor should its information contradict another part.

2. Go deep, not broad

Personal statement prompts tend to be targeted. Engineering schools want to know what specific qualities or experiences make each student a good fit for their programs. Common inquiries include recalling a time you solved a problem, explaining why you applied, describing your academic goals and intentions, and addressing any extenuating circumstances that might have impacted your school record. Rather than offering a broad synopsis of your life, choose the experience or intent most relevant to the question and explore it in depth.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Graduate School offers advice for writing an in-depth personal statement for engineering schools using the “qualified match” approach. The steps include:

• Make a statement that fits the essay prompt, like “I am a dedicated and hard-working student.”
• Quantify your statement with specific details about your life. You might, for example, discuss how many hours per week you spend on school work and how you overcome any obstacles to committing that time.
• Interpret how those details make you a stronger applicant. To continue with the above example, that might include writing about the knowledge you gained during your studies, your time-management skills, your passion for learning, and your commitment to succeed despite challenges.

3. Be relevant

If a personal statement has only one goal, it is to be shown to a review committee that you are the right fit for its school. That’s why applicants to Stanford University’s Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering are asked to specify their personal and professional goals in their statement of purpose, as well as discuss their developments and intentions for study and life beyond their doctoral program.

Read the mission statements of each program to get a feel for what they are looking for and keep that in mind as you write. Rather than getting carried away detailing the hours you log volunteering each week, discuss experiences and activities as they relate to your academic and career goals or scientific interests. 5. Mind your mechanics

This tip refers more to the mechanics of writing than any scientific drive, though the latter undoubtedly has a place in an engineering school personal statement. Remember when we said one of the goals of college essays is verifying applicants can communicate effectively? Applicants should consider the following elements as they prepare their outline (more on that next):

• Voice – Is your voice appropriate for the task? Is it too formal or casual? Are you using active language rather than passive and wishy-washy statements? Do you come across as academic?
• Structure – Do your ideas flow logically and support one main idea? If you are unsure where to start, know that following the reliable five-paragraph essay format is perfectly acceptable: introduction, three supporting paragraphs, and a tidy conclusion.
• Length – Engineering schools usually have a good reason for requesting personal statements with a specific word count. Those that are too short have too little to say, and those that are too long are likely to repeat the same concepts.
• Grammar – College students are expected to know and use basic grammar. Edit, edit, and then edit again.
• Completeness – Have you addressed the admissions essay prompt in full? What about any supplemental school or department-specific requests?

This is a mistake—and perhaps the biggest one you can make. Sometimes we get so caught up in our thoughts and ideas that we miss lapses in our writing, whether grammatical or contextual. To avoid this:

• Begin with an outline.
• Write the first draft.
• Write a second draft.
• Read the essay out loud.
• Review your essay again a day or two later.
• Ask parents, friends, teachers, and others to read your work.

There is never any excuse for typos, and even the slightest error can turn a committee review member off. Ask a friend or family member to review your essay for grammatical mistakes when in doubt. It may be intimidating, but the process is an excellent way to identify missing words or ideas. What’s more, applicants today are blessed with the power of technology. Starting Your Engineering School Admissions Essay

Chemical engineering personal statement example.

I’ve always been interested in the versatility and breadth of science, and I find Chemical Engineering to be the perfect balance of the natural sciences, offering a variety of real-world applications from fuels to food products.

One of the first things that interested me in chemistry was watching videos of graduates carrying out and explaining more advanced reactions such as NileRed. Many of his videos involve the synthesis of a specific substance or show the transformation of materials into something which may seem completely unrelated, such as turning plastic gloves into grape soda. In this experiment, he extracted a phthalate ester present in many vinyl gloves and artificial grape flavour, processing it into his own fizzy grape drink, explaining and showing his process in detail the whole way through. This prompted me to wonder and research what other unlikely materials may have distant relations, such as the use of monopropylene glycol in both antifreeze and e-cigarette liquid, which could lead to a truly unique experiment in the future.

Outside my academics, I enjoy cycling, camping, running; anything involving fresh air and the outdoors, which is why clean, green science is so important to me. During a summer course that I attended, one of the set work documents was a blog based on clean energy, which piqued my interest; our options of switching to sustainable energy or focusing on decreasing carbon dioxide emissions / CO2 removal, such as implementing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

When I first learned about this in GCSE Chemistry, it sounded like the perfect idea, and I thought - why isn't it widely implemented? This prompted me to carry out more research, where I read some articles, and while CCS could initially be an effective way to remove excess CO2 in our atmosphere, it is impractical and selfish to continually store it underground.

A quote from WIRED UK at the start of one of their CCS articles reads “intelligently taking advantage of natural processes will be key,” reinforcing my own beliefs. Most renewable sources derive energy from the Earth’s natural processes, such as solar and wind power from the sun, or the abundance of water in waterfalls, oceans, and other water reservoirs, allowing us to hone it into hydroelectric energy. With fossil fuels estimated to run out by 2060, renewable energy sources are becoming more and more paramount. Conclusively, renewable energy would be much more sustainable in the long term. My passion for this field drives me to instigate change for the future generations, so that we can amend our fuel mistakes.

Aside from sustainability, another topic I find fascinating is Pharmaceuticals, particularly the overdependence in antibiotics, which inspired my EPQ, entitled “How can we improve the Efficacy of Antibiotics in the future?” Within my research, I found that with the rise of antibiotic resistance, overprescribed over-the-counter medication, and genetic allergies, antibiotics are losing their efficacy and are soon likely to become redundant. This would lead to a bacterial epidemic, and potentially even pandemic, if not realised and resolved in time, due to the extensive overprescription of penicillin class antibiotics specifically. This raised many questions, namely, how are we to eradicate resistant bacteria such as MRSA and are we able to prevent more from arising? Prevention is, after all, better than cure.

The prospect of hard work does not faze me, as demonstrated by the three part-time jobs I held over summer. While I understand the importance of a healthy work-life balance, I enjoy keeping busy, as it allows me to continue to try new things and push myself out of my comfort zone, while enhancing my ability to prioritise. As a prominent member of my sixth form, I launched a Debate Club with a peer and also now run our Afro-Caribbean Society, which has helped to improve my confidence, communication, teamwork and public speaking skills.

Engineering is an area of study that has transformed the lives of humans in this world since nearly all things that make life worth living, from leisure activities to medical treatment, require aspects of this field of study. Because it adds value by means of realization of the technological progress, it has a major impact in the day-to-day lives of the majority of us.

In a limited period, it has transformed the way we have been looking at things in the past and it is inevitably going to shape our future for years to come as the world continues to advance in knowledge and science. Engineers belong to one of the respected professions in the world today and I want to part of this awesome team.

Engineering has been my passion since the days I was a child. When I was on holiday, I used to pay a visit to my uncle, who is an electrical engineer. He could teach me advances in technology and I was usually enthusiastic to hear more from him. My parents introduced me to computers at the tender age of five.

From then, my love for electronics has been blossoming year after year. My choice to enroll in this engineering class is not a shock to those who know me, as some of them have mockingly referred to me as “the engineer.” Studying engineering will also give me the flexibility and choice I need as I pursue my education.

This field of study offers several choices that are all exciting and are in high demand in the job market; therefore, this is a great choice that I have made since it will open up many paths for the future. In addition, since engineering trends have greatly benefited the society, I want to part of these team who strive to make life comfortable for everybody.

Enrolling in this class has several advantages to me. First, I will benefit from intellectual growth. Since studying this course will compel me to work on several transferable skills, it will enable me to grow and improve my ways of thinking. Moreover, I will learn different topics apart from engineering per se; therefore, having more useful skills will further develop my problem-solving and critical reasoning as a person.

Second, every person likes a good challenge, to some degree, as life would lack meaning if there were no challenges to be tackled. Engineering is a challenge since I will encounter fascinating problems that need my creativity and logical reasoning in solving. In the real world, challenges do not have the correct answer, thus the engineering challenge will adequately equip me for this.

Although I intend to learn more about engineering in this class, I know some things about the subject. Engineering, as the technical improvement of products by finding the solution to complicated technological problems, entails the knowledge of mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience and study, and this knowledge is what is being applied with judgment and creativity in the technical improvement of products.

I also know that engineers work through the application of the concept of modularity, that is, splitting a big problem into a set of smaller problems, for developing engineering designs so as to minimize the chances of not achieving anything.

Visiting Faculty (2025) | Chemical Engineering

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE) in the College of Engineering at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for visiting faculty position at the assistant, associate, or full professor level commencing in Spring 2025. The visiting faculty position is primarily focused on teaching. The visiting position is a one-semester renewable contract.

The applicant is required to have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, and show evidence of a significant teaching portfolio. Excellence in teaching and research, in addition to experience in the American model of higher education, are highly desirable.

Applicants should fill out an application form and upload the required documents (PDF) using the following link . The required documents are a cover letter and a detailed curriculum vitae (including a teaching statement, a research statement, a list of courses that can be taught or were taught, and names of at least three references who would be willing to write letters of recommendation. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering has approximately 200 undergraduate students, 15 graduate students, 12 full-time faculty and 3 lab instructors. Students and faculty represent very diverse backgrounds and nationalities; approximately 90 nationalities are present on campus. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biological Engineering, and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering.

AUS is located in the Emirate of Sharjah (about 15 km from Dubai). AUS is an independent, not-for-profit, coeducational university, serving more than 5,700 students. Further information can be obtained here .

Smishing is a cyberattack where scammers target individuals through SMS (commonly known as text) messages. The strange-sounding name is a merger of “SMS” and “phishing” because of the communication channel through which the crimes are carried out.

The goal of a smishing attack, as with most forms of social engineering, is to trick victims into taking certain actions that will benefit the scammer. In most cases, this involves giving away personal or financial information. For example, a smishing message might appear to come from your bank or utility company and request that you update your billing information.

Other times, a smishing message takes a simpler and more benign form. Rather than posing as official messages from a trusted source, it could simply say, “Hey.” Recipients respond to these messages thinking that they’re from a friend or acquaintance. The scammer would then carry on a conversation to build trust with the victim before asking them for money.

Company employees have often reported getting texts from their boss or CEO saying they are in urgent need of help and requesting the employee go buy gift cards to help the boss out. This, of course, preys on the employee's desire to do well at work.

In yet another version, smishing messages could look like an official message from a shipping company. Included in the message would be a “package tracking” link that would actually download invasive software when clicked.

The Thriving Economy Of Smishing

Smishing is a growing problem worldwide because it’s so effective. Research shows that only about 35% of people know what smishing is , so there’s less scrutiny of text messages than with other channels like email. Combined with the high response rates that text messaging typically generates, it’s enabling scammers to wreak havoc.

While the financial impact of a smishing attack varies, the average damage to an individual is $800. Given the vast number of people who fall victim to smishing each year, scammers are bringing in millions of dollars. And scammers are going to great lengths to keep their ill-gotten economy going.

In one case, two criminals in the U.K. installed a fake cell tower that allowed them to bypass the filters that mobile phone network systems use to detect smishing messages. The expense of this endeavor, not to mention the effort and technical knowledge required to pull it off, underscore just how significant the benefits are for scammers.

How SMS Providers Can Help

While individual phone users are ultimately responsible for how they engage with text messages, it takes a team effort to protect us all from threats like smishing attacks. SMS providers help the cause by refusing to accept accounts with free hosted email addresses such as Gmail and Yahoo. Scammers often use these platforms to create their fictitious accounts, so it’s an effective way to stop them before they can even get started.

Another effective strategy is for SMS providers to vet every company account that has been successfully created to ensure they are legitimate. This would involve a manual verification where a company representative call

Carrier Compliance Is Crucial

There are also protocols in place to help carriers reduce the prevalence of smishing. The first is 10DLC, which is the process of registering 10-digit long code (10DLC) phone numbers with a third-party organization called The Campaign Registry in order to send mass text messages in the United States.

As part of the registration, The Campaign Registry reviews each company’s reputation and eligibility. This step helps to catch scammers or at least limit their ability to reach users.

Another way that carriers help limit scammers is by investigating accounts when they are reported as junk and then blocking those that violate policies and laws.

Corporate Smishing Security Training

A final, and one of the most important, players in the battle against smishing is corporations. A successful attack can potentially expose data like the personal information of thousands of customers or employees. All new hires at all levels should be alerted to potential attacks on LinkedIn or other social media statuses and employment updates. Attackers comb social media sites for any such update, research the executives and management structure of the new company and impersonate senior members of your branch and/or department. By deploying smishing simulations to their employees, a corporation can gauge awareness, find vulnerabilities and provide security awareness training.

Even with effective training, smishing attacks will sometimes succeed. Corporations should create a safe space for employees to report issues. If those who fall victim to an attack are punished, people will be less likely to speak up.

What’s important is that your employees understand how devastating smishing attacks can be. As each of us becomes more vigilant and cautious, the risks decrease for everyone.

What To Do If You’re Smished

Here are a few simple steps to take if you think you’ve been targeted.

Don’t reply. Responding to random texts or even typing the word “STOP” to block future messages confirms your phone number is active, which can bring more attacks.

Don’t get in a rush. Many smishing messages use urgency to trick you into taking unwise actions. If something feels fishy, take time to assess it.

Verify the number. You can easily unmask a smishing text by directly calling the merchant or organization or person that purportedly sent the text. Your company should maintain a directory or “safe list” of executive and management numbers, which you should always verify against. Unless there is a device compromise, the source number of the scammer’s messages will be different from the person or entity they claim to be. Calling the impersonated individual directly can confirm that they, in fact, did not send you the fraudulent message.

Report the message as junk. The message will be deleted from your device and sent to your carrier and phone manufacturer for analysis, helping get more scammers blocked and future smishing messages detected by filters.

Smishing is among the fastest-growing forms of social engineering. It's important to stay informed and cautious.

Computer-Aided Engineering Approach to Optimize Hydroformed Exhaust Gas Recirculation Tube under Thermal Load 2024-01-5086

This study emphasizes the importance of computer-aided engineering (CAE) approach in optimizing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube under thermal load. With exhaust gases generating high temperatures, the EGR tube experiences increased stress and strain, posing challenges to its structural integrity. Moreover, the cyclic heating and cooling cycles of the engine imposes thermal fatigue, further compromising the tube’s performance over time. To address these concerns, the paper introduces a comprehensive CAE methodology for conducting factor of safety analysis. The nonlinear thermal analysis is performed on the assembly as due to high temperatures the stresses cross the yield limit. The strain-based approach is used to calculate the factor of safety. Moreover, a comprehensive case study is presented, illustrating how design modifications can enhance the thermal fatigue factor of safety. By adjusting parameters such as thickness and routing, engineers can mitigate thermal stresses and improve the tube’s fatigue life. This approach allows analysts to thoroughly evaluate whether the tube design can endure thermal fatigue for a specified number of cycles. By utilizing advanced simulation tools and techniques, engineers gain valuable insights into the tube’s behavior under varying thermal conditions. This enables informed decision-making regarding design modifications aimed at enhancing durability and reliability. Ultimately, the integration of CAE in the optimization process empowers automotive manufacturers to develop EGR tubes that meet stringent performance requirements while minimizing the risk of premature failure due to thermal stresses and fatigue. The tool used for simulation of the EGR tube assembly is ANSYS 2023R1.

RIT offers new master’s degrees in chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management

Courses designed to give credit for prior related education and allows remote learning.

RIT has added three new master’s degrees to its portfolio: chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and project management. Students pursuing graduate degrees are able to combine advanced coursework with hands-on opportunities in laboratories alongside faculty-researchers.

RIT is offering three new master’s degrees designed to meet industry needs.

Chemical engineering and biomedical engineering programs in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering will include new master’s degrees as part of the engineering portfolio this year to meet demands in increasing renewable energies, personalized healthcare technologies, and diagnostic system improvements.

National trends indicate a growing need for graduates with the combined skills in engineering and in the chemical and biological sciences, engineering processes, and ‘smart’ technologies.

The graduate programs will have a mix of students from the established undergraduate programs, as well as new-to-RIT students from regional, national, and international chemical engineering programs seeking advanced degrees. With the flexibility of the degree program, the department also is seeing interest and enrollments from students from other science disciplines such as physics , said Patricia Taboada-Serrano , Graduate Programs Director.

“This will be achieved through a bridge program designed to provide the appropriate engineering background required for successful completion of an advanced degree in chemical engineering,” she said.

A dozen students have been accepted for the new program and will begin chemical engineering courses this fall. There are also eight BS/MS students enrolled in the program who are completing undergraduate work.

There will be several emphasis areas: chemical and mechanical engineering applications; microelectronic focus on semiconductors, photovoltaics, microfabrication; microsystems and quantum level systems; materials science; and advanced mathematics and simulation.

“The strength of our program is the design of its curriculum, as we are able to provide depth in content and advanced skills in one year of studies in the case of full-time students,” said Taboada-Serrano, associate professor of chemical engineering. “The timeline of the completion of the graduate degree enables our MS graduates to rejoin the workforce quickly if they delayed or interrupted careers to obtain a graduate degree. The compactness of our curriculum also enables working professionals to pursue our MS degree and complete it in two to three years.”

Similar to chemical engineering, the biomedical engineering program has grown substantially since it began 10 years ago. Today, 15 students in biomedical engineering (BME) are being integrated into graduate study through the BS/MS options. There are five new students in the stand alone master's program . It is a one-year, course-based program that features a Capstone design sequence.

Biomedical engineers combine knowledge of engineering with biology, anatomy, and physiology to create devices and systems to address the need for sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and solutions.

In addition to the advanced engineering degrees, 10 RIT students this semester are the first to enroll in classes for a project management master’s degree .

The 30-credit degree is approved for both in-person and online delivery.

Project management is a process for managing the successful execution of new initiatives within an organization for the sake of expanding the breadth of capabilities, services, and products offered.

“You can use this discipline in almost any field,” said Peter Boyd , senior lecturer and graduate programs director for RIT’s School of Individualized Study , which is overseeing the program. “It’s akin to software engineering in that you could work in numerous industries, from IT to construction to aviation or health care.”

“Project management is a growing discipline. There’s a growing demand in a wide range of industries,” Boyd said.

A  RITx MicroMasters in Project Management, offered by SOIS on the edX.org platform, is an additional pathway into the program that allows students to earn RIT course credit at a reduced cost, that can be applied toward the requirements for the MS in project management. 

RIT’s master’s degree in project management differs from others across the country because he said RIT developed a curriculum “that is responsive to a wide range of student academic and professional needs, employs non-traditional teaching models that place a greater emphasis on project-based learning, and similar active learning experiences.” RIT’s degree also promotes strong student/faculty mentor-mentee relationships and brings project management to industries that would benefit from it but have otherwise not traditionally embraced the discipline.

The degree program allows students to customize their courses for their degrees, providing a natural path of interdisciplinary study. This allows students the ability to better specialize to their specific interests, giving them a competitive edge in their field of interest and making them more valuable to an employer.

Of the 10 courses required to earn the MS degree, four are elective, so students may use advanced certificates or other courses already offered at RIT. The remaining six classes focus on the core topics of the project management discipline and align with the standards set by the Project Management Institute, the governing body for the field.  

One of those students is Dana Harp, who is taking the classes online from her home in Lewes, Del. She does clinical research remotely for Pfizer.

She received her edX project management MicroMasters in 2020 and transferred those credits toward a project management advanced certificate with RIT in 2021. She took a couple of years off from education and was pleasantly surprised when she learned RIT now offers a master’s in project management.

“I was always interested in getting my master’s degree,” Harp said. “My company has a great program to reimburse for education, so I have the opportunity to continue learning without having to pay for it all myself. And it will definitely open up more opportunities for promotion by having that degree. It will give me a leg up for the trajectory I want to be on. This is going to help me moving forward.”

Harp hopes to receive her master’s degree in the spring or next fall, and she’s excited to be one of the first students receiving the RIT degree.

“I’m lucky all of my earlier classes transferred over, and it’s really cool to see that some of the professors I’ve had in previous classes are teaching in this program as well,” she said. “I think it’s going to be really fun.”
