During my time in high school I had it really good moments, but my best moments that I’ve experienced are in a particular class during my senior year, in Sacramento, Calif. So I was basically a new student in these kind of classes and also I’m English learner. I remember my first presentation in this class. I didn’t want to do it, but finally I did it and that one was my best moment. When I went to present I felt afraid, and then when I presented I felt so good for the effort I applied on. Now I feel so much better than my first day of presentations because I now know that I can do whatever I want to do. The learnings that I acquire made it so good this moment because I know that I have to trust on me. Something teachers or students can learn from my experience is that we have to overcome our fears and not let them control ourselves because we can’t know our capabilities if we are afraid.

The best moment in class was when I was in 9th grade in sixth period. That was when I got into poetry and spoken word. Having that “character and scene” class made my life even greater. Not knowing anything about poetry, hating on poems about reading and writing it in the past. That class was fun in many ways. For example; there was this one time where we had to write our own plays and poems and perform them in front of the class. I felt alive, and the creative side of me came out. When I wrote my first poem in freshman year. I realized that it was fun and unique. I felt like I wanted to write more and more. When I performed my first poem to that class I found my passion. Since that day and today I have written over 400 poems and made two books. I have performed on many stages in small audience and in school. That was a good day for me because I can write my thoughts down and write the truth about the world. Teachers and students can learn from this experience that, you can find what best fits you.

I would say my best class moment would be from my sophomore year in high school. For my Spanish class, our teacher decided we would do a class circle (Editor’s note: see “How To Practice Restorative Justice in Schools” for more information on class circles) for the day. She asked us a sequence of questions which required us to give a more in depth and heartfelt answer each time, starting with something along the lines of “How are you feeling?” and ending with “Why do you think that is?” A class circle which only should have lasted one day extended to three, with each and every single one of us having to share our deepest and darkest fears and insecurities. By then it felt more than just a class and opened my eyes to very different ways of teaching styles. I believe there is much to learn from this experience, both then and now. I have come to deeply appreciate not only the class but the teacher as well. This experience showed me the extent a relationship with your classmates and your teacher can go....

The best moment I’ve ever experienced in school was last year when I was a sophomore. I took biology last year and towards the end of the year we got to dissect a fetal pig. I know that it sounds gross but it’s really not. That’s what I thought at first too. I did lots of fun experiments in that class that were new to me, such as making a small ecosystem in a bottle and dissecting owl pellets to find mouse skeletons. I think that these experiences were really fun and interesting. I’ve never done anything like that in a class before.

I think that when teachers introduce students to hands-on activities and projects the students enjoy it more. Since we have more energy it’s a good use of it. We learn better when we’re allowed to move around and be creative. Our lives aren’t going to be pen on paper or books forever. It’s best to get us students to explore the world using our skills that we learn and strengthen our understanding of daily life that is sometimes hidden from us and exposed to us abruptly once we turn into adults.

What has been my best moment in a class? I’ve had many great moments but perhaps the most best moment took place in my English class about a month ago. I had a 10-15 minute presentation and I felt pretty confident. 30 minutes before my presentation I decided to incorporate an actor for visual appeal, to correspond with my presentation. I felt even more confident, assure that I would captivate the audience’s attention and keep them engaged. When my presentation started, I gave a signal to my actor which led me to drop my 8 notecards all over the floor. I was aware that the time was ticking, so I quickly grabbed all the notecards off the floor. I became overwhelmed with embarrassment, listening to the echoing laughter of the audience as I tried to rearrange the cards. The cards in my hand then became extremely restraining. My anxiety levels rose, and the disorganized cards just added stress to my emotions. I placed the cards down, and felt a great sense of relieve. My words, my explanations, my connections all flowed out my mouth with harmony, and I felt more natural and free as I presented my topic.

My presentation was a diagnosis of a character with schizophrenia, explaining the symptoms and the reasoning behind my diagnosis. The movement of my hands and my exaggeration presented by a drive of passion, along with my visual representative, kept the audience captive. I felt like a completely different person. By the end of the presentation I was sweaty, not by nervousness but because I left it all on the floor. I realized that the key to presenting with people is not getting their attention just by visual appeal. You need to let your heart pour out so that you can captivate their hearts, reach their souls. You can’t just be the center of attention, you need to give the audience attention, you need to talk to them. First and foremost, you can’t present without emotions. Anything you present should be built off of passion. As long as you can find a connection between yourself and the topic and exude your passion, you will keep the audience engaged.

My Home School Experience: The Discovery of History

I stepped onto the timeline of the home schooling movement somewhere in what might be termed the Middle Ages of its history. It already had its heroes when I entered the scene: Heroes who inspired and encouraged me to take that leap. There were only a few books on the subject, but they were quite profound in their insistence that our children might be in great danger of being uneducated. Memory work abandoned. Latin jettisoned. Classics forgotten. Phonics and grammar thrown out into the dumpsters to make way for the popular whole word method of reading. The beginnings of dialogue and discussion in the exercise of retelling out loud episodes we had read in our story books, made way for "child led" reading groups that were nothing more than art projects heavy with glue. The multiplication table was abandoned for "intuitive" ways of learning math. It was a teetering mess ready to crash.

There were some parents out there who were attentive to all of this. They had the absolute, feisty courage to pull their children out of failing and overcrowded public schools to teach them at home. They had no curriculum fairs, no co-ops, no home school programs to follow. They were truly pioneers forging ahead and planting seeds as they went. I owe these parents so much. Their efforts gave me the will to enter the timeline with my children and to be confident in my ability to put together a plan. Names like Charlotte Mason, David and Micki Colfax, Marva Collins, Susan Schaeffer Macaulay, and Dorothy Sayers came into my hearing through the efforts of people like Laura Berquist and others. TAN Books had also started reprinting classic Catholic saints' writings and I discovered the Baltimore Catechism reprinted. I pored over these books and their ideas and began my own walk on the timeline.

I grew up right on the edge of these free fall changes in education, and luckily I attended an ordinary, yet top notch, Catholic parish grade school where I learned to read, write, and spell. Math had not yet reached the intuitive stage. I had dodged a bullet in grade school. I will always honor teaching sisters in my heart for their dedication to education!

High school was far different. It can be summed up in perhaps one word: dull...dull as paint. Not that they didn’t try. I loved many of my teachers -- they would have done anything for us, but they were pinned helplessly to the curriculum they were given to teach.

Religion class was a mishmash of world religions and humanism. We never did learn the Catholic faith somehow. To be fair, it was the seventies and all hell -- and I do mean that in the literal sense -- had broken loose. The Catholic Church was reeling in a dizzying turmoil of disorganized changes with no real rock to hold onto at times. Literature was so dissected and picked apart by literary analysis that it gasped and died right before your eyes and you wanted nothing more than to throw those books over your shoulder and never look back. History fared the worst. It was one chapter after another of facts, facts, and facts interspersed with dates to memorize. A third person account, and a tedious one, on the march of history. I hated it worse than anything. I always dreaded that hour after lunch, that is, until I met Mr. Fields.

Mr. Fields taught American History and couldn’t get enough of World War II. He had a text book but never quite managed to open it. Mr. Fields liked telling stories. We heard stories about the people! We learned of the brave and ingenious soldiers and how they came to navigate the unfamiliar terrain of French hedgerows in order to outwit the Germans. We heard of the generous people who hid their Jewish neighbors from the Nazis without giving it a second thought. We heard of the clever layout of certain battles and about battles that did not work at all. We considered the amazing phenomenon of D-Day and the winning of the war. That hour went by in a flash and Mr. Fields, he had me the whole time. I would never forget him.

Mr. Fields taught me one thing that year. History is about the deeds and ideas of men, great and not so great, and their affect on the times they lived in and eventually on our own times. They were men who were once children, men and women just like us, who lived in specific places and times which had their own daunting challenges and magnificent discoveries. All of them shared that human experience and passed on their findings to us in letters, journals, books. THAT is the way to teach history.

I deem it the finest hour of home schooling that its pioneers literally saved history for the rest of us by digging up and ferreting out the old, forgotten, out-of-print stories of great men and women. It is because of the constant efforts of the home schooling movement that so many marvelous old books about historical figures were put back into print. We later home schoolers owe those feisty, determined ladies so much. So do all the small, classical Catholic schools that have popped up like mushrooms all over the country -- many formed by home schooling families seeking to enter and change the school system a little at a time. We all owe those early pioneers a great dose of gratitude for the very books we are using daily.

I would be remiss if I did not give you a list of books at this point. In the spirit of do one, teach one, I will share with you what I have discovered in my own journey of home schooling to encourage you on your own entrance to the timeline where you find yourself, or even if you are simply a parent who is searching for good books to read.

There are many historical books out there. I will not cover them all, but you should take your own dive and find others that appeal to you and your children. These are simply the ones I have come to love.

First, a note about geography. History and geography go hand-in-hand. In the early years of my home schooling I tried to teach a formal geography class. It became a real conundrum. It is the subject that I tossed over my shoulder at 5:00pm when the spaghetti noodles were boiling and supper needed to be made. Poor geography was always the first to go, alas, but over the years I learned a trick. If you do geography while you are doing history, not as a formal subject, but simply looking at a map and placing the people or places you are reading about on the map, that works wonders. Every house we have ever owned had two large maps of the U.S. and the world, all marked up on one wall or another. It is home school decor at its finest. Ask anyone.

Now, about history. There is this little tidbit of information I need to mention at the outset. Some books you will buy and your children will fall in love with them. Others that look so great to you that they will never even touch -- but YOU will. And that is a good thing. Home schooling is also for adults. It feeds you all that information you never picked up the first time around. Consider yourself getting educated twice. It’s terrific!

As an example of this, I fell in love with these wonderful books by Holling Clancy Holling. My kids not so much. So, I would look at them while the kids were doing their math. The books cleverly teach the geography of the U.S. and parts of the world through delightful characters. The Southwest’s geographic story is told by a tree growing in the middle of the Santa Fe Trail and what the tree saw pass by over the years. We travel the Great Lakes of the North with a little carved Indian toy in his canoe who fell in the water and journeyed through Lake Superior to the sea. A little turtle journeys down the Mississippi and shows us what it sees, and a seagull takes you across the ocean and the area around Nantucket. It is a clever way to teach geography and the pictures are gorgeous and mesmerizing. I loved Holling! Even though my kids said "ho hum." Chances are, you will have a child who loves them too, one day, somewhere in the line.

D'Aulaire is an all around favorite from his Greek and Norse Myths down to his wonderful books about George Washington and Abe Lincoln. You learn about their childhoods, their adventures, their moms and dads. Kids need that information to place these people in context, to compare them to their own human experience. D'Aulaire excels at this.

Another amazing set of books are those by Genevieve Foster. While she is telling you about the life of George Washington, for example, she is also telling you what is going on in the rest of the world while George is hitting his own milestones. This is the most wonderful way of giving a child a sense of a whole and integrated time period in history. That history is being made all over the world at the same time. Reading these books also led us to purchase a nifty book called A Timeline of History -- where you can place the names and pictures of famous people on each page spanning one hundred years. At the end of the year, you have a wonderful overview of who lived when and how they influenced each other.

Two little unassuming books were packed from beginning to end with the important concept that even a child’s actions matter in the unfolding of historic events. In this case, bravery. Real bravery! The Matchlock Gun and The Courage of Sarah Noble are little gems. They make children think that they are not just "extras" in the drama of life. Their choices also make a difference. I did find, after the sixth child, that The Matchlock Gun was a far better read aloud than not. Most of my kids really didn’t care one way or another for it until one day when I decided to read it aloud to my seventh child, and do all the voices. I got to the climax and suddenly all the older kids were at the doorway listening in rapt attention. It’s the glory of a big family that books come around over and over again and one day they suddenly stick where they didn’t stick before. We all agreed, after that, that some books should always be read aloud.

Jean Fritz is one of my favorite historic authors. She is very straightforward and honest about the discoverers in particular. They were not always the best or most virtuous of men. This is also a good thing to realize about history; we must tell the truth, even if it is about Catholics acting badly, because of course they do at times like everyone else. This is a good opportunity to discuss the temptations of riches and power and the harm they cause. Many of the lives of the early explorers show this as a cautionary tale. It is not a time to gloss over the evil actions of men to make the Church look good. This will not harm your child’s love of the Church. Reality, if well explained, is always better than well-meaning lies. What might hurt your child is finding out later in life that some of these historic figures are not in fact what they learned as a child and they might be disillusioned and become mistrustful of Catholic historians fudging the less glorious truths. Jean Fritz is a very fair writer, and I came to love so many of the people she wrote about because they were three-dimensional and fully human in their virtues and their foibles. History is always three-dimensional.

Willa Cather’s books are all wonderful. She too takes a realistic approach to history in her novels. We truly enjoyed Death Comes for the Archbishop , My Antonia , O Pioneer! , and Shadow on the Rock. Her characters are also three-dimensional and it is so interesting to see who ends up settling where and how our melting pot contained so many different people from many different countries learning to live together to form towns and cities.

I must end with the sad tale of Squanto, Friend of Pilgrims . No one read it except the 7th child because I read it to him. It was a great book to me, but all the kids simply said, "Meh." That's okay! Someday I am hoping a grandchild will come along and love it. I don't have a picture of it as it probably mysteriously fell behind a radiator somewhere in the house, and is lying there still. My apologies, Squanto.

These are just a few of the books we have read and enjoyed which made history come alive for us. I wish you the joy of discovering history as it should be taught; through the actions, deeds, and thoughts of great and not-so-great men and women.

I think often of Mr Fields and how he would have been such a great home school dad. But then again, I would never have come to love history if he had not been planted like a tree of life in a dull and stagnant learning experience. God’s trees are planted everywhere in the oddest places for our good. Thank you Mr. Fields, wherever you may be now, for your gift of storytelling. It has made all the difference.

How to Write an Essay about Your School

If you’re hoping to draft an insightful essay about your school, you’re in the right place! Writing an essay about your school offers an opportunity to share your experiences, the unique features of your school, and why it is important to you.

In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through five straightforward steps to pen such an essay effectively. Alongside these steps, we’ll craft a sample essay to demonstrate how you can apply these steps in practice. Ready to begin? Let’s dive in!

Step 1. Plan the word count for your essay’s paragraphs.

Planning the word count for each paragraph in your essay is a helpful initial step, which can make the writing process smoother and faster. Remember, a typical essay comprises three key parts:

The introductory paragraph
Three body paragraphs
The concluding paragraph

For example, you want a 300-word paragraph. Here’s one way to distribute 300 words across five paragraphs:

That’s all you need for your essay — five solid paragraphs.

Step 2. Choose your central theme and supporting points.

Firstly, decide on a central theme that encapsulates your school experience. This will provide a coherent thread for your entire essay. When choosing your theme, think about what defines your school. What are the core values? What unique attributes does it possess?

For our sample essay, let’s use this as our central theme: “My school, Greenfield High, stands out for its emphasis on community, innovative teaching methods, and commitment to the arts.”

Next, we will apply the Power of Three to break down this main theme into three supporting points. The Power of Three is a three-part structure that aids you in crafting your body paragraphs.

In our case, we will focus on three features that define Greenfield High:

Greenfield High fosters a strong sense of community.
Innovative teaching methods are a hallmark of Greenfield High.
Greenfield High shows a deep commitment to the arts.

With these in mind, we can now begin to write our essay!

Step 3. Write the introductory paragraph.

To write an introductory paragraph , you can follow the diagram below:

The introductory paragraph should begin with an engaging opener that sets the context for the essay. Following this, you should introduce your central theme and your three supporting points. Here’s our example:

Introductory Paragraph

“Schools can profoundly shape our lives, molding us through their unique cultures, methodologies, and focus areas. My school, Greenfield High, stands out for its emphasis on community, innovative teaching methods, and commitment to the arts. Its sense of community fosters cooperation and mutual respect among students, its innovative teaching methods stimulate our intellectual curiosity, and its commitment to the arts provides a rich, expressive outlet for students.”

Step 4. Write the body paragraphs.

Next, we’ll develop three body paragraphs to elaborate on our supporting points.

Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that summarizes the paragraph’s main idea, followed by explanation and examples.

Paragraph 1

“Greenfield High fosters a strong sense of community, which has deeply impacted my school experience. Its student-led initiatives and regular community outreach programs have taught us the value of teamwork and public service. For instance, our annual ‘Greenfield Gives Back’ campaign, where students volunteer in local charities, has not only benefited our local community but also fostered a sense of responsibility and empathy in us students.”

Paragraph 2

“The innovative teaching methods adopted by Greenfield High are another defining feature. Teachers often integrate technology into their lessons, enhancing our understanding and making the learning process more interactive. I remember how our geography teacher used virtual reality to explore different ecosystems, turning abstract concepts into immersive experiences.”

Paragraph 3

“Lastly, Greenfield High’s commitment to the arts is exceptional. The school offers numerous art programs and supports artistic events like art festivals and music competitions, providing students with opportunities to express themselves and develop their talents. For example, participating in our annual school musical has allowed me to explore my passion for performing arts and has greatly boosted my confidence.”

Notice how each body paragraph begins with a topic sentence, followed by further explanation and examples.

Step 5. Write the concluding paragraph.

The concluding paragraph is best written by paraphrasing the points made in your introductory paragraph. Avoid copying and pasting; instead, refer back to your introductory paragraph and restate the points in a new way. Let’s apply this method to our sample essay:

“Schools greatly influence our formative years through their unique characteristics. Greenfield High, with its emphasis on community, innovative teaching methods, and commitment to the arts, has shaped my educational journey in significant ways. Its strong sense of community has instilled in me the importance of cooperation and service. Its innovative teaching methods have fostered my intellectual curiosity. Finally, its dedication to the arts has allowed me to express myself creatively and grow my confidence.”

With this approach, writing the conclusion becomes quick and straightforward.

And there you have it! I hope you find this tutorial useful as you craft your own essay about your school.”

What has My School Taught Me?

If someone asked me what I have learned from my school, I won’t be able to answer it in one sentence. For the lessons are irreplaceable and I can never be thankful enough for them. I learned to share because of my school. The power of sharing and sympathy was taught to me by my school. I learned how to be considerate towards animals and it is also one of the main reasons why I adopted a pet.

School is an excellent place to learn how to be an adult before entering the real world. Those abilities pay dividends whether you choose to be the bigger person in an argument or simply complete your domestic tasks. When you open your mind to new ideas, you gain a lot of influence in society. Picking up unexpected hobbies on your own will teach you more about what you like to do than simply completing things for a grade.

Our principal also used to give us a short lecture every day for about 10 minutes about etiquette, character development, moral education, respecting others, and gaining excellent values. As a result, I can claim that what I am today is solely due to my school, which is the best institution in my opinion.

Teamwork is an important ability that schools teach. Schools are frequently the first places where youngsters have the opportunity to collaborate with children who are different from them. Collaboration is essential for the team and individual success. Students are taught that the success of a team depends on each individual component functioning together.

To sum it up, studying in one of the respected schools has helped me a lot personally. I will always be indebted to my school for shaping my personality and teaching me invaluable lessons. It has given me friends for life and teachers that I will always look up to. I aspire to carry on the values imbibed by my school to do well in life and make it proud.

What My School Means to Me: Essays from 3 High Schoolers

How students at an unusual school think—and write—about their experience.

In January, I visited the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, a public residential high school in Greenville. Artistically talented students from around the state spend two or three of their high school years in dedicated pursuit of their art—dance, drama, music, visual arts, or creative writing—along with their academic curriculum. I wrote about it here .

I asked Scott Gould, a creative writing teacher at the school, if he would ask his students to write me a short essay about their school. This was a wide-open request; I wanted to hear whatever perspective the students wanted to offer about their experience at the school. Among the essays the students submitted, here are three of my favorites, unedited and untouched. I’d like to share them with you.

The first is by Cameron Messinides, a junior from Camden, SC:

Long-Distance My mother called on Sunday to tell me our herd of goats, previously twenty-one strong, had been reduced to three. Two feral dogs squeezed through a hole in the pasture fence and killed anything they could catch. My parents and brother arrived during the massacre. My father jumped the fence to chase the dogs and shot the slower one with a pistol. On his way back, he heard a few scattered bleats and followed the sounds. In a gully, he found two billies and the last nanny. They had survived by shoving themselves into an abandoned chicken coop. Afterwards, my family walked among the carcasses--once white, now bloodstained and caked with rain-softened clay. We wanted to find life, my mother said. They gave up at four in the afternoon, and my father and brother made a pile of the bodies in the woods, to be buried later. Phone calls like this are common now. I've been in a boarding school since August, and every weekend my mother seems to find something new to break to me. It's not always bad. The weekend before, she called to tell me my brother enrolled in a birding retreat on the South Carolina coastline. And before that, she told me about the new color she picked for the living room walls. I'm still not used to this kind of communication. I miss immediacy. A year ago, when I still lived with them, I would know all this. She wouldn't have to tell me two or three days later. I'd like to say I've adjusted, but I haven't. The Wednesday after the goats died, she called again. She told me she couldn't shake what she had seen. She worried. Would the dogs' owner show up? How about the surviving dog? What if he came back? She hadn't been sleeping, and when she did, she dreamt of the bloody bodies, the torn sides of a billy, the kids crushed into the mud. I told her I knew how she felt, but I don't. I don't think it's possible. She sent me only one picture of the scene, a close-up of the surviving nanny's nose, ripped open by the dog's teeth. The rest I have to imagine. I imagine the dogs—Brown? Black?—chasing the herd across a winter field, hooves and paws tearing up dead grass. I imagine stumbling kids. I imagine the deputy who arrived a few hours later, gray-haired and perhaps a slow talker. None of it is certain. I still sleep easily. That's the cost of our separation: her anxieties don't travel the phone lines, and I can't make myself care. But I want to care. Some days I only want to be home, in the ranch-style with green siding and the stump in the front yard, which is the only remnant of the rotting oak my family cut down without me. I'd walk to the pasture with my father, take the shovel he offers me, and dig with him, shoulder-to-shoulder, a hole big enough to put all eighteen dead goats under three or four feet of orange clay. Then, we return home, and I sit in the living room next to my mother, tell her she can sleep now. Even hours into the night, after she has gone to bed, I sit, surrounded by lamplight and the color of the freshly-painted walls, three coats of Townhouse Tan, and listen to my brothers. They lie side-by-side on the hearth, birder's guidebook open before them, and take turns whispering names to each other: bobwhite, cardinal, tufted titmouse.

Next, by Shelley Hucks, a senior from Florence, SC:

Florentine In the heart of South Carolina, the railroad tracks converge over swampland, and fields are laced with cotton in the Dog Days of early August. The summer heat rolls in, unstoppable and rests between cypress knees and Spanish moss. The place can’t decide what to be: it’s one-third urban, one-third rural, and one-third swamp. The people seem to fall victim to a cycle of poverty, of being at sixteen what their parents were at eighteen, what their own children will be at fourteen. It’s not easy to get out. The place is called Florence, and I lived there for sixteen years before moving three hours away to study creative writing at a boarding school. In upstate South Carolina is the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. It’s situated just off Greenville’s downtown area, with Reedy River Falls Park in the school’s backyard. Downtown Greenville is an arts community, with performing centers and theaters, galleries, art festivals and craft fairs, and restaurants willing to provide venues for writing club readings or jazz band performances. Not only is the atmosphere different, but the entire landscape: from my dorm room, I can see the hazy silhouette of mountains. At the Governor’s School, I’ve studied under excellent teachers. I’ve been exposed to new authors and genres, learned to be curious, analytical, to believe in the deliberation of every line of poetry and each line of dialogue in a short story. I’ve learned to put my personal life into artistic context with the help of professionals. I’ve learned to become aware. To make something strange, beautiful, something important. And, something particularly valuable to me because of my immense pride in my hometown, I’ve learned to appreciate a strong sense of setting, the way characters can function in so many complex ways. I’ve learned how to convey Florence in words. Governor’s School has provided me with the training to write about the content that I grew up with, the material I naturally have to offer. Every story I write takes place in some type of Florence, with its tangible sensation of heat trapped in the swamp, the perpetual presence of desperation. All of my characters are based on Florentines: single mothers I’ve met at work, the mysterious neighbor who passed out already-opened Halloween candy, or the woman who showed up to church drinking hairspray. Going home on breaks, or for the summer, has altered my perspective of Florence. Instead of seeing tragic figures living in a never-changing place, I see characters full of complexities living in a place as undecided as they are. Once, the chain-link fence covered in hubcaps was ugly. But now I see it as armor, protecting the women on the porch, who sip sweet tea and watch another fistfight unfold in the street, those men who wordlessly understand the ritual required to live here.

Finally, by Jackson Trice, a senior from Simpsonville, SC:

Outside the Lines I forget how strange my school sounds to the rest of the world until I leave it. On a card at the front desk inside a college admissions building, I am told to write the name of my high school. The full name, South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, does not fit on the dotted line, and I have to draw an arrow to the back of the card, and write the rest there. When I say my school’s name out loud to family members, it sounds prestigious, almost regal. But on the first day of school here it is made clear that I was chosen based on potential, and not necessarily talent. It’s this ego smashing that happens throughout junior year that creates the atmosphere of Governor’s School. You don’t get “good,” you just make progress. You are not special, you’ve just been given an excellent opportunity. I don’t know how much Governor’s School has changed me until I meet up with friends from my old school at a football game during fall break. I live in Simpsonville, South Carolina only a fifteen minute drive from downtown Greenville. Still, all these kids know about my school are rumors. “I’ve heard the dancers are super catty,” one says. “I’ve heard there’s, like, crazy amounts of sex.” I answer, “Sometimes,” and “That’s a good joke,” respectively. I try to explain to them that yes, I have real school work on top of art work. No, I can’t have a boy in my dorm room—I can’t even have Advil. Hey, hey, there are a few republicans. Like, two, maybe? I quickly realize that the magic of this school is lost as soon as I try and pin words to it. I stop coming home for Friday night football games. I choose, instead, to stay on campus. There are two creative writing classrooms that make up our department. Each is packed with books and long desks and computers. Only creative writers are allowed in these rooms, and there’s a giddiness in the seclusion of it. Monday through Thursday, we stay in the rooms after hours to get work done, but on Fridays, we kick our shoes off and run around to celebrate the weekend. We lay on the desks and talk to each other and laugh until our sides ache. We share secrets and stories and we belong to these rooms, to the spines of our favorite books on the bookshelves. We belong to each other. There are, of course, the nights when AP Chemistry keeps me up until four in the morning. There are the days where workshop is brutal, and I never want to write another word again. There are those scary moments where I feel that the pressure is too much and I fantasize about going to regular school. Maybe then, I could learn to drive, go to real high school parties, eat my mother’s delicious food anytime I wanted. But then there’s a drama student playing guitar in the academic stairwell. The sound of his voice spins up the flights of stairs, bouncing off walls in wistful echoes. It calms me. There’s hot chocolate at the Starbucks across the street, and there’s the beauty of that street, which is lined with small trees dressed up in white Christmas lights, illuminating the sidewalk. There’s my friend who sits with me inside Starbucks and talks about Rilke and Miley Cyrus with equal insight and tenacity. When I return, there’s a group of students outside the residential life building, blocking the doors. They’re all dancing, and singing to the beat of their clapping hands, stomping feet: “You have to dance to pass. Dance, dance, to pass.” And because I can sense that there is something wonderfully magical about this place, I feel that I must obey them. It is only necessary. I am a terrible dancer, but in this moment, I dance shamelessly. When the crowd is satisfied with my moves, they cheer, and finally part, letting me into the building, welcoming me home.

My school life has been an amazing journey so far. I started my education in a small primary school and then moved on to a bigger secondary school. Throughout my school life, I have been fortunate enough to have experienced a positive and supportive learning environment. I have made many great friends, learned valuable lessons and developed my passion for learning.

My school life has not just been about studying and getting good grades, it has also been about extracurricular activities and sports. I have been a member of the school's debate club, music club and basketball team. Participating in these activities has not only helped me to build my skills and confidence, but it has also allowed me to meet new people and form new relationships.

My school life was one of the best phases of my life.

What All I Did

I was active in academics as well as extracurricular activities, which helped me in developing a well-rounded personality. Academically, I always maintained a good record and was amongst the top 10 students of my class. I took a keen interest in subjects like mathematics and science and used to participate in various quizzes and science exhibitions to showcase my knowledge.

Apart from academics, I was also involved in various co-curricular activities. I was a part of the school debate team and used to represent my school in inter-school debates. I also played football for the school team and was the captain in my final year. I learned the importance of teamwork and leadership skills through these activities.

I was also actively involved in social work and used to volunteer at various events organised by the school. These activities taught me the importance of giving back to society and being empathetic towards others.

My school life was an amazing journey that taught me several life skills and helped me in becoming a well-rounded individual. I am grateful for the opportunities and experiences that my school provided me with and will cherish these memories for a lifetime.

500 Words On My School Life Essay

I am a student in my final year of high school, looking back at my time spent in school, I am grateful for the experiences I have had. My school life has been filled with memorable moments, academic achievements, and opportunities for growth.

Starting the Day

I start my day by waking up early, around 6:30 AM, and getting ready for school. I have a quick breakfast and then I am on my way to school by 7:30 AM. The start of my day sets the tone for the rest of it, and I make sure I have a positive mindset and am ready to face the challenges ahead.

Favourite Class

My favourite class is English. I have always had a love for language and the power it holds to communicate ideas and emotions. In my English class, I have the opportunity to delve into literature and express my thoughts through writing and holding discussions with my classmates.

Academic Achievements

Throughout my school life, I have been fortunate to receive academic recognition for my hard work and dedication. I have been on the honour roll for several semesters and have received awards for my achievements in various subjects. These accomplishments have motivated me to continue working hard and strive for excellence in my academics.

Co-Curricular Activities

In addition to my academics, I have also been actively involved in various co-curricular activities. I have participated in the school's debate team, and have taken part in several inter-school competitions, where we have had the opportunity to represent our school and compete against other schools. I have also been a member of the school's student council.

Friendship and Social Life

One of the most important aspects of my school life has been the friendships I have made. I have met some of my closest friends in school and have created memories that will last a lifetime. My school has provided a supportive and inclusive environment, where I have been able to form meaningful relationships with my classmates and teachers.

Challenges Faced

Like any journey, my school life has also been filled with challenges. One of the biggest challenges I faced was balancing my academics with my co-curricular activities. It was challenging to manage my time effectively and make sure I was giving my best to both. However, with the support of my teachers and friends, I was able to overcome this challenge and find a balance that worked for me.

Leadership Opportunities

My school has provided me with several opportunities to develop my leadership skills. Through my involvement in the student council, I have learned how to work effectively with others, communicate my ideas, and make a positive impact in my school community.

Overall, my school life has been a journey filled with memorable moments, academic achievements, and opportunities for growth. I am grateful for the experiences I have had and the relationships I have formed. I will always look back on my school life with fond memories and a sense of pride in what I have accomplished.

School life teaches us lots of new things and prepares us to face all the challenges of life. I love my school life and really enjoy it. I have lots of friends, and all my teachers love me. I love my school and enjoy going there every day to meet my friends and learn new things.

Everyone keeps on saying that school life is the best time of your life. When listening to these phrases from their elders, the school students think about what is good about this life. All we do in the entire day is to attend the classes and to do the homework. But once school life gets over, the students realise that school life was the best time of their life.

Apart from learning great things in school, you make new friends, play different sports and create memories for the rest of your life. The students also learn many life skills like teamwork, good manners, etc., and understand what they want to become in their life.

About My School and School Life

I study in the reputed private school in my city, and I am glad to be a student of this school. My school is one of the most renowned schools in my town. It is very beautiful and huge. My school has all the facilities for sports, study and other activities. Built-in a three-storey building, it is a Co-Ed and Senior Secondary School having Science, Arts and Commerce stream. The atmosphere at my school is delightful. We have a huge playing ground where we all students play different games like Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, etc. We have a separate Basketball and Tennis court, as well as a small and beautiful garden for kids.

The students practice these sports every day. The school also has a big swimming pool and sports area for indoor games. In this area, the students can play Table Tennis and Chess. There is also a big skating rink. Different physical training teachers train us for all these sports. These sports not only keep us fit but also increase our stamina and coordination.

School life is not just limited to studies and sports. There are also other activity rooms such as the music room, art room, and dance room. The Art room is a big hall with lots of colourful charts and various types of paints. The students can portray their imagination and can create beautiful art here. Dance and music are also very important in school life as they help the students express themselves in a new manner. The different movements in dance help the students in unwinding themselves.

Then, further half an hour until we reached school was a time for chit-chat and discussion about the homework assigned to us the earlier day.

We would reach the school at around 7:30 am, approximately fifteen minutes prior to the school bell. We had to be in our respective classes before the bell rang. Then it was time for national song and school prayer that went on until eight which was a time for regular school periods to begin. This continued for four periods continuously until the recess bell rang at 10:30 am. Recess felt more of a games period then a lunch break. Everyone would be seen doing different activities during this time. The kind of activities one indulged in depended on the class he was in.

When we were in the primary classes we played different games in the school garden. Basketball, football, running and hide and seek were some of our favourite games. As we reached the secondary classes, we began to sit in the canteen to chit chat about the various things and enjoy delicious food. After the recess, we had to attend four more periods. Not every period was that boring though, art and craft, PT, value education and mathematics periods were interesting for me.

Apart from this formal schedule at school, those gossips with friends, hanging around at canteen, going to washroom to partially bunk the lecture, that fear of punishment when we’d forgotten to complete the homework, that note which the teacher wrote in the handbook when we’d done some mischief in the class, the ride in nervousness from home to school on the result day, from immature fights to the innocent laughs – everything from the school feels so dear now, maybe because the things were simple back then.

Now coincidentally, 10 more students from my class also bunked the lecture which made the decreased class strength visible. So, our teacher did the checking and found out about the students who bunked and so eventually we were suspended from our laboratory sessions for a week.

However, we didn’t stop bunking lectures post this. We became really smart in finding ways to bunk. We tried to strike a balance between being a good student and enjoying high school. During all those bunks, I realized how important it is to have friends to make your life worth living.

Then, there came our first high school exam and I managed to be on the list of top 10 students of my class. I had always been a good student academically. So this time, even after all the shenanigans that I indulged in, I managed to score good marks. But this was the last time that I got good marks. My grades started degrading after that and this led to a lot of stress and anxiety. I lost interest in studies and indulged in gaming, watching movies or reading novels.

Thankfully, I didn’t do anything bad, but this normal stuff made the situation worse as I could not concentrate on my studies. So, I went through counselling which I never thought I’ll ever require. It was a difficult period for me but eventually I was able to get decent score in my finals. My parents stood as my pillar of strength during this time. They encouraged me to study and motivated me to lead the right path. I cannot thank them enough for their guidance and support.

What I’ve Learned From My Students’ College Essays

The genre is often maligned for being formulaic and melodramatic, but it’s more important than you think.

Most high school seniors approach the college essay with dread. Either their upbringing hasn’t supplied them with several hundred words of adversity, or worse, they’re afraid that packaging the genuine trauma they’ve experienced is the only way to secure their future. The college counselor at the Brooklyn high school where I’m a writing tutor advises against trauma porn. “Keep it brief , ” she says, “and show how you rose above it.”

I started volunteering in New York City schools in my 20s, before I had kids of my own. At the time, I liked hanging out with teenagers, whom I sometimes had more interesting conversations with than I did my peers. Often I worked with students who spoke English as a second language or who used slang in their writing, and at first I was hung up on grammar. Should I correct any deviation from “standard English” to appeal to some Wizard of Oz behind the curtains of a college admissions office? Or should I encourage students to write the way they speak, in pursuit of an authentic voice, that most elusive of literary qualities?

In fact, I was missing the point. One of many lessons the students have taught me is to let the story dictate the voice of the essay. A few years ago, I worked with a boy who claimed to have nothing to write about. His life had been ordinary, he said; nothing had happened to him. I asked if he wanted to try writing about a family member, his favorite school subject, a summer job? He glanced at his phone, his posture and expression suggesting that he’d rather be anywhere but in front of a computer with me. “Hobbies?” I suggested, without much hope. He gave me a shy glance. “I like to box,” he said.

I’ve had this experience with reluctant writers again and again — when a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously. Of course the primary goal of a college essay is to help its author get an education that leads to a career. Changes in testing policies and financial aid have made applying to college more confusing than ever, but essays have remained basically the same. I would argue that they’re much more than an onerous task or rote exercise, and that unlike standardized tests they are infinitely variable and sometimes beautiful. College essays also provide an opportunity to learn precision, clarity and the process of working toward the truth through multiple revisions.

When a topic clicks with a student, an essay can unfurl spontaneously.

Even if writing doesn’t end up being fundamental to their future professions, students learn to choose language carefully and to be suspicious of the first words that come to mind. Especially now, as college students shoulder so much of the country’s ethical responsibility for war with their protest movement, essay writing teaches prospective students an increasingly urgent lesson: that choosing their own words over ready-made phrases is the only reliable way to ensure they’re thinking for themselves.

Teenagers are ideal writers for several reasons. They’re usually free of preconceptions about writing, and they tend not to use self-consciously ‘‘literary’’ language. They’re allergic to hypocrisy and are generally unfiltered: They overshare, ask personal questions and call you out for microaggressions as well as less egregious (but still mortifying) verbal errors, such as referring to weed as ‘‘pot.’’ Most important, they have yet to put down their best stories in a finished form.

I can imagine an essay taking a risk and distinguishing itself formally — a poem or a one-act play — but most kids use a more straightforward model: a hook followed by a narrative built around “small moments” that lead to a concluding lesson or aspiration for the future. I never get tired of working with students on these essays because each one is different, and the short, rigid form sometimes makes an emotional story even more powerful. Before I read Javier Zamora’s wrenching “Solito,” I worked with a student who had been transported by a coyote into the U.S. and was reunited with his mother in the parking lot of a big-box store. I don’t remember whether this essay focused on specific skills or coping mechanisms that he gained from his ordeal. I remember only the bliss of the parent-and-child reunion in that uninspiring setting. If I were making a case to an admissions officer, I would suggest that simply being able to convey that experience demonstrates the kind of resilience that any college should admire.

The essays that have stayed with me over the years don’t follow a pattern. There are some narratives on very predictable topics — living up to the expectations of immigrant parents, or suffering from depression in 2020 — that are moving because of the attention with which the student describes the experience. One girl determined to become an engineer while watching her father build furniture from scraps after work; a boy, grieving for his mother during lockdown, began taking pictures of the sky.

If, as Lorrie Moore said, “a short story is a love affair; a novel is a marriage,” what is a college essay? Every once in a while I sit down next to a student and start reading, and I have to suppress my excitement, because there on the Google Doc in front of me is a real writer’s voice. One of the first students I ever worked with wrote about falling in love with another girl in dance class, the absolute magic of watching her move and the terror in the conflict between her feelings and the instruction of her religious middle school. She made me think that college essays are less like love than limerence: one-sided, obsessive, idiosyncratic but profound, the first draft of the most personal story their writers will ever tell.

6. Save Your Hard Earned Money

Post-secondary education costs in Russia can be much cheaper than in Western Europe or North America. Most courses range from $1,880 to $13,540 per year. So if your heart is set on colleges in Moscow, Russia, they’re more affordable than you think!

Cost of living is another factor to consider, and it varies widely based on location. Living in Moscow, for example, will be much more expensive than living in Vladivostok. To show how wide this scope is, university dormitories can cost as little as $7 a month to as much as $780 a month!

Many students choose homestays to save money and get a crash course in Russian culture. Others rent private apartments and houses. Regardless of your choice, your average monthly expenses will be much lower than in western countries.
