There is a moment in “Plan A,” based on the true story of a revenge plot by German Jews following WWII, when two exhausted, deeply traumatized people, devastated by the loss of friends, family, homes, and a belief in a world that makes sense, take a moment to do something normal. They go to a movie, their first time in a theater since before the war. An American newsreel shows crowds cheering the returning soldiers in New York. A world where people are filled with joy and hope at the end of the war is incomprehensible to the people who see nothing around them but unthinkable horror. And then the newsreel turns to footage of the newly uncovered atrocities in the concentration camps. The survivors are looking at images they know only too well, as they hear new details still being uncovered.

“What if I told you that your family was murdered?” we are asked at the beginning of the film. What would give you a sense of justice? Or of satisfaction? Or just of something more than powerlessness? Those issues are explored with some nuance in this somber, dark drama.

The character in the heart of the story is fictional. His name is Max, played by August Diehl . It is through his sunken, haunted eyes that we see the different ways the devastated survivors think about what to do next. Some leave for what was then British-controlled Palestine, with the hope of creating what would become Israel. Others stay behind, trying to extract vengeance.

Max tries to return to his home, looking for his wife and son. He asks the man who is living there how we could have betrayed Max’s family. “This house is mine now,” Max’s one-time neighbor says, pointing his gun. “Just because the war is over does not mean we can’t kill Jews anymore.”

Max meets up with members of the sympathetic British Jewish Infantry Brigade Group, who are working to relocate survivors to Palestine. They are also killing Nazis who have been identified by at least two sources as responsible for killing Jews. They conduct interrogations, make sure the families are not present, and then shoot or strangle them. They believe these restrictions give them some semblance of legitimacy.

And then there are the Nakam, who refuse even those limitations, and whose goal is just to kill as many Germans as possible. They consider every German equally complicit, have little faith in the Nuremberg trials for producing justice, and call themselves Avengers. Their name is from the biblical word for vengeance, with “dark, dangerous” implications. They say of the Brigade Group, “We might have the same rage but not the same path,” and they tell its leader, “I wish you could stand with us. I hope you won’t stand against us.”

The Brigade does want to stop them. And so Max joins them undercover, pretending to be with them but in reality reporting back to the Brigade. Or is he? Max goes so far to prove himself to the Nakam, and its leader. Abba Kovner (a real-life character who later became a prominent Israeli leader and poet, played by a magnetic Ishai Golan ) that it is impossible for us, for the Brigade, and maybe Max himself to say whose side he is on. He becomes a triple mole when, as a member of the Nakam, he infiltrates a German crew working to rebuild the city’s water supply.

Israeli writer/directors and brothers Yoav and Doron Paz want to use all of these layers to explore issues of survivor guilt, justice, revenge, and the loss of everything that made the world feel like it made sense. But the film’s inherent emotional power is undermined by the visual and narrative murkiness of its storytelling, including a gotcha twist at the end that has nowhere near the weight of the themes it's trying to explore.

What is the better way forward: punishing the guilty or building a life filled with all they tried to take away from you? Can any sustainable future be built on abandoning the very rule of law your enemies tried to destroy? As Tevye says in “ Fiddler on the Roof ,” the principle of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” would leave the whole world blind and toothless.

Now playing in select theaters and available on VOD on October 14th.

Plan A review – astonishing Holocaust survivors’ revenge plot falls flat

This dramatisation of a real-life plot by a group of Jewish survivors to poison the water supply in Nuremberg is well acted but too neatly packaged

B ased on actual events, this film from Israeli brothers Doron and Yoav Paz dramatises an astonishing piece of Holocaust history: a deadly plot by a small group of Jewish survivors to poison the water supply in Nuremberg. “An eye for an eye. Six million for six million.” It’s a handsome-looking, decently acted film, but unpersuasive and fundamentally lightweight, the material packaged a little too neatly into a conventional easy-to-consume movie in which characters purposefully stride in slo-mo across rooms. Characters speaking in accented English don’t help.

It’s 1945 and former death camp inmate Max (August Diehl), face gaunt, eyes red-rimmed, walks half-starved back to his village in Germany to search for his missing wife and son. The man now living in his house is a former neighbour. He pulls a gun on Max. “Just because the war is over it doesn’t mean we can’t kill Jews anymore,” he barks, a bit flatly. Like a lot of the scenes here, it doesn’t generate a sense of enough at stake.

Max eventually reaches a camp where survivors are being processed for passage to Palestine. He meets a group of young officers from the Jewish Brigade. Here the script touches on the painful experience of Holocaust survivors in the early years after the war, criticised for failing to resist. A Jewish solider asks Max why he didn’t fight back. There were thousands of you in the camp, he says. The officer in charge persuades Max to infiltrate Nakam, a Jewish group suspected of planning something big in Nuremberg – an attack that could jeopardise a future Jewish state. Inevitably, Max becomes torn between two ideas of what revenge for the Holocaust could look like: a new life in Palestine versus Nakam’s retribution.

The will-they-won’t-they succeed in carrying out the poisoning plot makes for pretty flat drama, and for a film about people who have suffered so much, this really fails to make us care about the characters.

Plan A is released on 3 September on digital platforms.

A SURPRISING AND TENSE INDENTITY THRILLER: ‘PERFECT PLAN’ REVIEW

If I’m not watching some light-hearted and silly chick flick on a Saturday night, then I’m likely watching the extreme opposite of it with a TV suspense title. One of them is this title, The Perfect Plan , featuring a familiar Hallmark face.

The Perfect Plan (2010) Incendo Film Review

Business is more than a little bit rough for Lauren Baker (Emily Rose). Working along with her partner, their real estate business isn’t booming and to make her life more troublesome, Lauren’s boyfriend doesn’t seem willing to invest time or effort into their life. Things get a little bit more interesting when, though a commission, Lauren meets Sean (Lucas Bryant). Sean is looking to sell his family’s home, which happens to come with an elite address. It’s a sale that could net Lauren a nice paycheck. A few drinks in and some flirting later, Lauren finds a buyer and sells the house, and out of her life walks Sean. Everything seems good.

Suddenly Garrett (Jonathan Watton) appears at the home claiming ownership and with him, he brings news that his siblings, the real Sean and Rebecca were murdered. Suddenly not only is Lauren needed for police questions but her business is in tatters as well as her personal life.

A SURPRISING AND TENSE INDENTITY THRILLER: ‘PERFECT PLAN’ REVIEW. Review of the 2010 film with Emily Rose. All text © Rissi JC

In recent months, I’ve seen quite a few of these films from Incendo. Some are way better than others, and this is one I underestimate. For some reason its little title card didn’t appeal to me and so I’d skip past it every time. Finally, after seeing Rose in a romantic comedy, I decided to watch this. The story is all about a con and so we don’t quite expect it to be as “intense” as it is. While not the fun kind of caper movies we love, The Perfect Plan is nonetheless still pretty good.

The cast is good and characters interesting, but if there’s one thing I’m learning (now 3-6 Incendo productions in), you cannot trust anyone . Sometimes we learn early on that someone is bad, other times it’s not until the end. Either way, we have to always be on guard with these characters as sometimes the people who seem or represent good aren’t.  No matter if you guess the right baddie or not, the film is interesting and entertaining, especially if you like a suspense that’s a little more emotionally intense.

Content: there’s two pretty “steamy” sex scenes. This includes lots of caressing and kissing, some removal of clothing before the scenes cut away. In addition, there’s lots of flirting. There’s also some “intense” moments of suspense; four people die (murder), but the camera doesn’t show anything graphic (blood, etc). The film is TV-14.

Lesson 7: Task: Write a film review

movie review plan a

This is the lesson where you put everything together. We want you to write a review of a film.

Writing a Film Review

This is the lesson where you put everything together. We want you to write a review of a film. You will see two examples of film reviews which you can use to help you write your own review. When you’ve finished your review, post it in the comments section and read other participants reviews and tell them what you think. In lesson one we looked at film vocabulary, in lesson three we gave you some advice about using film to improve your English and gave two short reviews of films about football, in lesson four we focussed on the passive which is a common form to use when writing about films, and in lesson six we showed you some websites where you can read lots of film reviews. While you are writing your review, you can go back to these lessons for some help.

What should I include in my film review?

It's up to you! Here is a list of some common things that you see in film reviews. Have a look at the Bend It Like Beckham film review and match the five colours to the things in this list. Is there anything extra included in the review? Is there anything missing?

  • The film's title.
  • An eye-catching heading.
  • The genre (type of film).
  • The audience. Who is the film for?
  • The director, main actors, when it was made, has it won any awards?
  • The plot. A brief summary that doesn't mention the ending!
  • Your opinion.
  • Your evaluation.

Film Review 1

Bend it like beckham – brilliant and funny.

How can I describe Bend It Like Beckham? If I had to choose a genre, I would say it’s a romantic comedy-drama sports film!

The film was made in 2002 and directed by Gurinder Chandha who is well-known for films which explore the lives of Indians living in the UK.

The film is set in London and stars Jess (Parminder Naghra) , who is an 18-year-old girl with Indian parents. One of the main storylines is the tension between Jess, who loves football, and her parents, who don’t allow her to play. Jess’s friend and teammate, Jules, who is played by Keira Knightly (Pirates of the Caribbean) encourages Jess to play despite her parent's wishes.

The film deals with serious social problems such as sexism and racism, but the film is very funny at the same time! The acting is very good and of course, there is a happy ending! Oh, and David Beckham is in the movie, but you must wait until the end for that! I would give Bend It Like Beckham four and a half stars out of five and definitely recommend you watch it!

Now, look at the second film review. Is it a good review ? What does it include? Is there anything missing?

Film Review 2

Fever pitch – funny, dramatic and a perfect finish.

I love football and I love films, so Fever Pitch was the perfect movie for me. It tells the story of a school teacher who is mad about his football club – Arsenal! The film was made in 1997 and is based on a best-selling book of the same name. The film has also been remade for American audiences based on baseball.

The main role is played by Colin Firth (Paul) one of the UK’s most famous actors. Paul falls in love with a new teacher (Sally) at his school during the 1989/90 football season, one of the most important seasons in Arsenal’s history. The plot follows the ups and downs of Paul’s romance with Sally and the fortunes of Paul’s football team. But who does he love more? Sally or Arsenal? You’ll have to watch the film to find out!

There are strong performances by Colin Firth and Ruth Gemmell (Sally) in this romantic comedy-drama. If you are a football fan you will love this film, but it definitely has a wider appeal, too! I will give it five-stars and not just because I’m an Arsenal fan!

I would say that An Angel at my table is one of my top ten most favourite films. It’s a drama film which directed by Janet Campion and shot in 1990. The film is based on Janet Frame’s three autobiographies. Kerry Fox plays the role of Janet Frame, a famous New Zealander writer and poet. The film is about the life of Janet Frame who was a very clever child until, as a teenager, she was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and sent to a mental institution……… The story takes place in Australia, New Zealand and the UK in the different parts of Janet’s life. It ’s a flawless masterpiece. The storyline is so beautiful and inspiring and Kerry Fox’s acting is just incredible. I was mesmerized by that shy, intelligent and lonely girl and could totally relate to her. Besides, his movie makes New -Zealand look like the most gorgeous place on earth Another thing I loved about Another thing I loved about the movie was the excellent music score.

Marvels: Endgame is my favorite movie, It has been my favorite movie since 2019, and it has been my favorite because everyone loved Avengers: Endgame, but it’s not just any other superhero flick. It’s actually the best film in the MCU. It’s emotionally resonant. Endgame has a sense of beauty behind all of the action and violence. At the center of the film, it really is a love story. Thor goes back to see his mother before she is murdered by the Dark Elves, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) reconciles with his father, and Steve Rodgers reunites with his wife back in his original time.

Twilight Saga

I loved this saga, I saw it many times and today in summer I saw it again and I can't get enough of it. I love the story, the characters and the villains, everything was well done. When I finished the saga for the first time, I did a lot of research on the characters, their lives, relationships etc. I saw a news that they will make a new movie based on Edwar Cullen's point of view, I hope they make it soon.

Mamma Mia! - Who is my father?

If you like musicals and the popular Swedish group ABBA, this is a perfect film for you. Dona is a single woman managing a small family hotel on a little Greek island. Her daughter, Sophie, is getting married and she decides to invite her father to the wedding. The tricky thing is that she doesn‘t know who her father is. The film was made in 2008 and directed by Phyllida Lloyd. It stars Meryl Streep (Donna), Amanda Seyfried (Sophie), Pierce Brosnan (Sam), Colin Firth (Harry) and Stellan Skarsgard (Bill). There is fabulous music, excellent acting and singing and a lot of funny scenes. The plot is funny on one side but there is a serious overtone. I would give Mamma Mia! five stars because I think the film has positive vibes and it is more important than anything else.

The Twilight Saga, a franchise you've probably all heard of. But it is actually that good? Here's what I think:

The movies are based on the book series with the same name, written by Stephenie Meyer. I would describe them as your high school-dream books: you've got the romance, the rivalry, the drama, and an amazing story! What more could you ask for. In the first movie from 2008, we see Bella (Kristen Stweart), Edward (Robert Pattinson), and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) live out their triangle-drama just the way we imagined from the books we already know and love!

If you, like me, love watching a cheesy, teenage drama and would like to fall in love with your new favorite vampire family over and over again - I suggest you watch and/or read the amazing Twilight saga, written by the one and only Stephenie Meyer, brought to life by Melissa Rosenberg.

The Bourne identity is really good action spy movie. The main actor Matt Damon is just perfect for his role. This movie is about a good-looking young man suffering from amnesia, trying to find out his identity. On the beginning we can see a fisherman on a boat spots a body floating … When they got him on board, the body turns out to be alive. The friendly fisherman rescued him, gave him some money to go to Switzerland, because he has a capsule embedded under his skin, contains the code to a Swiss bank account. He was welcome in that country, he took a lot of money despite lacking a name or any form of personal identification. Also, he finds several passports, one saying his name is Bourne. The problem was that he really wanted to know why he was in the sea, and his real name, because he noticed about himself that he is not like everyone else. He speaks several languages, has highly trained power observation and memory, know all the spy tricks and was perfect driver. In a fact he was a special agent, he was hired by special service to kill important political people. When he finds out who he really is, he decided to leave his job, because he was a good person, he did not want to kill anyone anymore. And of course, there was a girl, why helped him a lot and he was in love with her. In the end of that movie, he has found his girl Maria and decided to live with her a simple normal life… far away from his past life. I like that movie a lot it has everything. I would definitely recommend that movie.

The book of life It is an animated film directed by Jorge Gutiérrez with a duration of 95 minutes, released in the United States in 2014. It is a legend-like story of two young men, Manolo and Joaquín, who live in a traditional Mexican town and compete for the love of María. Behind that bet are also two spirits, La Muerte and Xibalba, who will take part for each young person, tipping the balance for one of them to know who will conquer the sweet Maria? From that moment on, a very dizzying adventure begins that takes the viewer into the world of the living and the dead with fantastic colors and definition. It amazes so much level of detail and authenticity. The movie offers unique universes. The Book of Life is an entertaining animated film, suitable for children from the age of seven (more or less), it is a fairly elaborate film, with easy and simple content to digest. For me, the film also has authenticity, it is that although there is a stamp of the producer, it does not go beyond the creativity of the author.

I'm not a big fan of superhero films, but the movie Black Panther really caught my attention. It was directed by Ryan Coogler and it came out on February 16, 2018. The film is about a young man name T'Challa, play by the late Chadwick Boseman, who returns home to the African country of Wakanda to take his rightful place as king. But when he's tested by a sudden enemy, Erik Killmonger play by non other than the talented Michael B Jordan, he must resolved this conflict because the fate of Wakanda and the world is at risk. With that said, he must gather an army, the Dora Milaje(adore ones) and the lead Okye (Danai Gurria), his wife to be Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) and his brilliant little sister Shuri(Letitia Wright) that must fight with him till the end to defeat their enemy and keep their country safe. Overall the movie was amazing. I like that it appreciated the cultures of blacks in the United States and African cultures. Also the actors and actresses put their heart, soul, mind and body into each of their roles. Last but not least, the customs changes and effects was flawless.

‘Plan 75’ Review: Leaving Early

In this quietly bold debut feature, the Japanese government offers a euthanasia program and a 78-year-old woman considers her future.

  • Share full article

A woman with graying hair and a blue sweater stares across a room.

By Nicolas Rapold

In the lurid 1973 dystopian thriller “Soylent Green,” Edward G. Robinson movingly played a man who embraced euthanasia, dying in a special chamber while being soothed by classical music. That story was set in 2022. “Plan 75,” the quietly bold debut feature of Chie Hayakawa, is on the same page, envisioning a more or less present-day version of Japan that hawks euthanasia services to the aged.

As macabre as that sounds, the conceit channels actual anxieties in Japan about providing for a growing population of seniors. The sober drama centers on a 78-year-old woman, Michi (Chieko Baisho), who still has her independence, her health and a karaoke-loving friend circle.

The government’s assisted suicide program seems like an over-advertised nuisance to Michi, until she loses her job and finds a friend slumped over dead. Life turns precarious, Michi grows isolated and Plan 75 — the name of the government program — starts to sounds appealing. We are also introduced to a Plan 75 clerk, Hiromu (Hayato Isomura), and a Filipino caretaker, Maria (Stefanie Arianne), who takes an unsavory gig with the program.

Hayakawa avoids slipping into satire or a stylized dystopia, making details like a euthanasia spa package seem plausible (and insidious). Yet a somnolence hangs over the film, and Hiromu and Maria are left somewhere between having full-fledged story lines and just being useful foils. Still, Baisho gets across the creeping despair that morbidity and the loss of community can create — a sensation that lets “Plan 75” double as a consummate entry in pandemic-era cinema.

Plan 75 Not rated. In Japanese and Tagalog, with subtitles. Running time: 1 hour 53 minutes. In theaters.

Positive Messages

While there's no direct, positive message -- it's more of a cautionary tale -- the movie has plenty of material worth discussing. Viewers can talk about the nature of greed, how powerful and corrupting it is, and how it can make people turn against other people. Viewers can also talk about what they might have done differently in the same situation.

Positive Role Models

No real role models here, given that all the characters succumb to the ravages of greed, and almost all of them commit unspeakable acts. Two of the characters, at least, learn a lesson at the end.

Violence & Scariness

Characters shot and killed, with blood spatters. Smothering man to death. Bashing man on head. Reference to a man committing suicide. Crow pecks at character's head. Bloody wound. A fox breaks into a hen house and carries away a dead chicken. Frequent arguing.

The complexity of too much money, too soon

What's the story.

In A SIMPLE PLAN, Hank ( Bill Paxton ) works at a feed store in rural Minnesota while his librarian wife Sarah ( Bridget Fonda ) is about to have a baby; they're just getting by, but are happy. Hank's uneducated brother Jacob ( Billy Bob Thornton ) comes over one morning to visit their parents' graves. Jacob brings the low-class, beer-drinking Lou (Brent Briscoe). Driving home, Jacob's dog runs off into the snowy woods, and the trio find a crashed airplane, the pilot dead, and a huge bag of money -- $4.4 million -- in the back. They decide to keep it, but agree that they'll wait until spring to see if anyone comes looking for it. Before long tensions arise, leading to arguing and eventually murder.

Is It Any Good?

Sam Raimi's neo-noir masterpiece is a story of greed and nervous waiting and decaying civility; it brilliantly balances gut-clenching suspense and dynamic violence with nuanced, engaging characters. Expertly adapted by Scott B. Smith from his own debut novel, A Simple Plan reveals a new maturity in director Raimi, best known for his frenzied Evil Dead cult horror movies and his high-spirited hit Spider-Man movies. The movie's use of snow and intertwining, spiderweb-like tree branches visually establishes a sense of entrapment, and images of Hank and Sarah's happy home life slowly taken over by the money's corrupting power create strong drama.

The characters are also key, from Paxton 's college-educated Hank, who likes to take charge, to Thornton 's slow-witted Jacob, who occasionally surprises with demonstrations of his own kind of inner wisdom (Thornton received an Oscar nomination). Fonda rises above the usual third-wheel wife character with Sarah's own whip-smart cleverness; she's almost a femme fatale. Even Briscoe's Lou avoids a backwoods hillbilly stereotype, instead finding his inner pain and defense mechanisms. Raimi pulls all these elements together into a movie that's strongly visual as well as character-driven, and constantly gripping as well as frequently touching. A Simple Plan easily ranks among the greatest film noirs of all time.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about A Simple Plan' s depiction of violence . How did it make you feel? How did the filmmakers achieve this? Were the scenes shocking or thrilling?

How is drinking portrayed? Is it glamorized? Are there consequences for drinking?

What is the nature of greed? Why is it so powerful, and why does it often have such negative results?

What would you have done if you found the money?

How does the movie compare to the original novel?

Shogun Ending Explained & Recap: Did Toranaga Win in the Finale?

By Vansh Mehra

Here’s the Shogun ending explained and a recap of the finale featuring spoilers about what happened. Dive into our breakdown and learn about the fates of Yoshii Toranaga, John Blackthorne, and Kashigi Yabushige, among others.

What happened at the end of Shogun and who dies?

Shogun ended with Toranaga finally revealing his plan of becoming Shogun to Yabushige before aiding him in committing Seppuku.

The final episode saw the return of Yabushige, John Blackthorne, and Toranaga’s consorts to Edo, post Lady Mariko’s sacrifice. Yabushige was guilt-stricken with her demise because he was the one who led the intruders into the Osaka castle. He admitted to his crime and was sentenced to commit Seppuku the following day.

Before going out, he named Omi his heir and had a final conversation with Toranaga. He regretted not getting to see the lord’s plan come to fruition, and not knowing what it was. So, Toranaga fulfilled the dying man’s wish. He revealed how he managed to execute Crimson Sky without sending his army to Osaka.

Instead of the army, he sent Lady Mariko. Her sacrifice caused distress across the city. It led all the important families to flee the land as they realized that they were being held hostage. Furthermore, the attack on Mariko divided the Council of Regents. While Ishido believed they were all united, Mariko’s death had already sown the seeds of division between them.

Most importantly, it had turned Lady Ochiba to Toranaga’s side. In the secret letter that she sent to Toranaga, she pledged her loyalty to him, burning her ties with Ishido. With no support from the heir or Lady Ochiba, Ishido’s defeat was imminent.

Before dying, Yabushige asked Toranaga whether he wanted to be Shogun, to which the latter didn’t reply. But stabbing himself, Yabushige smiled at Toranaga, finally understanding his true plan. The lord smirked back and sliced Yabushige’s head off. His little smile implied that it was indeed his plan to become the true Shogun of Japan the entire time.

How did Toranaga win the war and become Shogun?

Lady Mariko’s demise changed Lady Ochiba’s heart and she no longer supported Lord Ishido. With the latter not fighting under the heir’s banner, he would no longer have the support of other regents, thus leading to Toranaga’s victory.

The finale of Shogun subverted fan expectations by not delivering the Battle of Sekigahara from the books. While Toranaga’s smaller army would eventually go to war against Ishido and the other armies of the regents, they wouldn’t have to fight as Ishido had already lost.

Knowing that the heir’s army was supporting Toranaga instead of Ishido, the regents would also fall back and ally themselves with Toranaga. That would give the Lord of Kanto the ultimate power and begin his Shogunate. In this era, he would have the ultimate military power and create a nation without wars, with the backing of Taiko’s heir.

All this was possible with the efforts and sacrifices of Nagakado, Hiromatsu, and Mariko, and masterful use of Yabushige and John Blackthorne.

What happened to John Blackthorne?

John Blackthorne’s fate was to never leave Japan and Toranaga made sure of it.

The Anjin realized that his ship wasn’t destroyed by a traitor in Ajiro but as a part of the deal that Lady Mariko made with the church to keep him alive. However, it was Toranaga who orchestrated that and had the ship destroyed to test Blackthorne. The Englishman passed his test and let go of his own personal war.

On Toranaga’s order, he began to rebuild the ship and decided to stay by Toranaga’s side to build him a fleet. He initially thought that he was using the lord. But the latter revealed that he was using the Anjin to cause distractions that would ultimately help him in becoming Shogun. Toranaga admitted that he kept Blackthorne alive because the merchant made him laugh.

Towards the end, Blackthorne lets go of Mariko’s cross, proving that the scenes showcasing him as an old man in England in the future were merely visions or dreams. But, his future was in Japan and even James Clavell’s Shōgun novel implied that Blackthorne never went back to England.

The series stays true to the book as Toranaga would always burn his ship down (orchestrate a scheme) to keep him by his side. Blackthorne’s fate lay in Toranaga’s hand and he had accepted that.

The Accidental Husband (2008)

The accidental husband.

Release Date February 29, 2008

Director Griffin Dunne

Cast Uma Thurman, Colin Firth, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Lindsay Sloane, Sam Shepard, Justina Machado

Rating PG-13

Genres Romance, Comedy

The Accidental Husband is a romantic comedy from 2008 that starred Uma Turman as Emma and The Walking Dead 's own Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Patrick. In this film, radio host and relationship advice guru Emma's world is turned upside down when her upcoming marriage to Richard (Colin Firth) is delayed because she is still technically married to a man named Patrick. Patrick is a firefighter and the cunning mastermind behind Emma's troubles. He fabricates an elaborate plan for revenge that eventually leads to an unintentional and unexpected love story.

A Classic 2000s Delight

The title alone practically guarantees a formulaic, feel-good time. Uma Thurman provides a knock-out performance worthy of screwball originals, and her co-stars aren't too shabby either. Colin Firth is notorious for his leading male roles in romcoms like Bridget Jones' Diary , so his casting is perfect. Jeffrey Dean Morgan shows a familiarly scheming, but far more wholesome side to his acting repertoire. The film is chock-full of the typical screwball plot devices, from overly complicated problem-solving to impractically dramatic stakes, and has all the makings of a comfortable rom-com binge.

The Back-Up Plan (2010)

The back-up plan.

Release Date April 23, 2010

Director Alan Poul

Cast Noureen DeWulf, Michaela Watkins, Jennifer Lopez, Alex O'Loughlin, Eric Christian Olsen, Anthony Anderson

Runtime 106

Continuing on the romantic comedy train, 2010's The Back-Up Plan , starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O'Loughlin, is a solid choice for a free movie on YouTube. This rollercoaster of a plot starts with a desperate Zoe (Lopez), whose internal clock is ticking into overtime. Tired of waiting for the perfect relationship, she decides to get artificially inseminated in order to start a family. She then meets Stan (O'Loughlin) and the two completely hit it off. Zoe might have found her one and only, but is that one and only ready for fatherhood?

A Surprisingly Poignant Rom-Com

Kudos are in order for an early 2010s film about artificial insemination and its surrounding cultural questions. Jennifer Lopez is an icon in more ways than one, including her romcom lead prowess . While Alex O'Loughlin may perhaps be better known for his stint as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-0 , he manages to bring his comedic genre-mashing chops to the role. While the premise is fresh, the momentum of this film can be a bit still at times, its ending is far worth the wait.

What Women Want (2000)

What Women Want is a classic pairing of rivals to relations. In it, Mel Gibson plays chauvinist advertising exec Nick Marshall who, after a freak accident with a blow dryer, is suddenly able to eavesdrop on women's thoughts. Having recently lost a promotion and with his company looking to conquer the more feminine market, he uses this newfound skill to his advantage to listen in on his new boss, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt). Of course, this causes him to fall hard for her in the process. Between repairing his relationships with his female co-workers (and his young daughter) and coming up with the perfect ad campaign to impress his bosses, he takes full advantage of this newfound gift for as long as it lasts.

A Formula that Works

Acclaimed filmmaker Nancy Meyers is at her best in this film, as are Hunt and Gibson. Both actors were at the top of their game at the time, and their onscreen chemistry is absolutely electric. The message of empathy for one's fellow man (or woman, in this case), is hard to deny. Marshall's behavior is shown to stem from his upbringing in a casino, an insight that might otherwise have been lost in less adept hands. There's a formulaic nature to this film, yes, but it only serves to punctuate the story and its message all the more.

The 10 Most Underrated Performances In Romance Movies Of All Time

Penelope (2006).

Release Date March 1, 2006

Director Mark Palansky

Cast Ronni Ancona, Nick Prideaux, Michael Feast, Richard E. Grant, Christina Ricci, Catherine O'Hara

Runtime 101

Genres Romance, Comedy, Fantasy

Penelope tells the story of a family cursed by the decisions of their ancestors to not accept a pair of young lovers. In the present day, Penelope (Christina Ricci), an aristocratic heiress, is born with a pig snout as a result. The only way to break the curse is to find her true love, someone who will wholeheartedly accept her, snout and all. Her well-meaning, but utterly misguided parents hide her from the world for years... that is until, sometime after her 18th birthday, when they decide to take her love life into their own hands. Their attempts to set her up with a fellow blueblood, however, go horribly awry, leading Penelope to strike off on her own in search of acceptance.

Elevated by a Brilliant Ensemble Cast

Released during the height of fable fantasy fervor, this modern take on classic fairy tale tropes is nothing short of delightful. There is a message of acceptance hidden deep beneath the overtures of classism. Plus, this cast reads like an understated who's who, from Catherine O'Hara as Penelope's mother, to James McAvoy as a kind, but subterfuging suitor, to Peter Dinklage and Reese Witherspoon as newfound friends Penelope finds along the way. And, with a PG rating, the film is wholesome enough to binge with some younger loved ones in tow.

Ball of Fire (1941)

Ball of Fire is a classic screwball comedy featuring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. The story centers around a group of bachelors (and one widower) who live and work together in a prim and proper pad. Desperate to understand and learn some more modern colloquialisms to add to the work, the youngest of them, Professor Potts, a grammarian in American slang, turns to Katherine "Sugarpuss" O'Shea for advice. A nightclub performer by trade, she only agrees to stay after finding herself on the run from police as a result of her mob boyfriend's shenanigans. The pair, of course, take a liking to each other, but are forced to put their feelings aside momentarily for the sake of the book and their lives after Sugarpuss' angry boyfriend comes a'calling.

A Screwball Comedy that Stands the Test of Time

This title perfectly encapsulates Stanwyck's character, a firecracker with a silver tongue for 'modern' American colloquialisms. Obvious references to the fable of Snow White aside, this juxtaposition of stuffiness and flamboyance makes for some incredible screwball shenanigans. The chemistry between the two leads is rife, though they are at times outmatched by those of their academic companions. A common matter in romantic comedies, the couple's attempts to save each other are of course what ultimately keep them apart for so long. Viewers will have to refrain from yelling at the screen for some more open and honest communication, which really would have solved just about all the woes of these two lovebirds to begin with.

Best Classic Screwball Comedies, Ranked

The wedding singer (1988), the wedding singer.

Release Date February 13, 1998

Director Frank Coraci

Cast Ellen Albertini Dow, Allen Covert, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Glave, Christine Taylor, Adam Sandler

The Wedding Singer features Adam Sandler as Robbie and Drew Barrymore as Julia, two features of the wedding circuit who are just perfect for each other. The only problem? Both of them are already engaged... to other people. That is until Robbie is dumped at the altar by his fiancé, who fell in love with his rock star persona and just can't stomach his new career as a wedding singer. This puts an obvious damper on both his personal and professional life as his gigs turn more and more sour. What follows is the ultimate will-they-won't-they as the newfound work pair finds their feelings for each other growing in spite of or because of their current and ex-spouses to be.

Irresistible Chemistry Between Sandler and Barrymore

This one is a classic on must-watch weekend re-runs for a reason. An early pairing between Sandler and Barrymore, it's no wonder after watching this film why they would go on to star alongside each other in so many more films. This film is easily one of Sandler's all-time best comedies, with just the right mix of oddball to offset the otherwise romantic tropes. Set in the '80s with the costumes and soundtrack to match, this film has an understated realness of work relationships amid the ridiculousness of wedding day jams. Plus, it's a chance to check out the comedic stylings of the always hilarious Ellen Albertini Dow as Rosie.

Every Day (2018)

Based on the novel by David Levithan, Every Day follows the love story between 16-year-old Rhiannon (Angourie Rice), who falls in love with the mysterious 'A' (who is played by far too many actors to list here). 'A', you see, is a traveling spirit, an entity that wakes up in a different living teenage body, regardless of gender, every day. Rhiannon first meets 'A' when they wake up in the body of Justin, her otherwise neglectful boyfriend. A day spent alongside her, of course, causes 'A' to fall madly in love with her, which leads them to seek her out long after he leaves her boyfriend behind. Upon learning his secret, Rhiannon is challenged to fall and stay in love with someone whose gender-fluid, outward-facing form is forever in flux.

A Romance with Philosophical Undertones

This film does a stellar job of creating purpose for the characters in a cohesive narrative, it also manages to sneak in a handful of ethical conundrums, mostly centering around the agency of 'A' as they take over the lives of others. The bodies 'A' possess do not usually remember their previous day(s) spent taken over by 'A'. This begs the question of whether it is fair for 'A' to exist in others, especially when they take over bodies for an extended period of time, living their lives for them. The answer is, in a word no, a sad fact that both Rhiannon and 'A' both come to accept after time. Thankfully, 'A' manages to use their powers for good, for the most part, and still manages to leave an indelible impact on the lives they briefly possess.

The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)

The time traveler's wife.

Release Date August 14, 2009

Director Robert Schwentke

Cast Bart Bedford, Katherine Trowell, Alex Ferris, Eric Bana, Arliss Howard, Michelle Nolden

Runtime 107

Genres Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi, Documentary, Fantasy

There's nothing like a bit of time travel to up the stakes for romance. The Time Traveler's Wife stars Eric Bana as the traveler in question, Henry DeTamble, and Rachel McAdams as Clare Abshire, his wife. Based on Audrey Niffenegger's 2003 novel, the film follows DeTamble's entrances and exits into Clare's life, which is the result of an uncontrollable para-genetic disorder. As a result, he travels back and forth between different important moments of his life without notice. Unable to change much about them, he struggles to develop a relationship with the love of his life, for whom his sudden appearances and reappearances throughout the course of her life eventually take their toll.

Another Sci-Fi-Tinged Romance

There is a graceful fluidity to this romance in what might otherwise have been marred with overwrought science-fiction explanations. While it is at first unsettling to watch DeTamble meet up with his wife in her pre-pubescent years and beyond, their involvement over time serves to both bond them together and tear them apart. There is an uneasy feeling of knowing what will pass, reliving old memories in real-time, and not being able to spend moments in said real-time with the ones you love. The mystery of not knowing when and where the main character will appear and reappear makes for some brilliant dramatic moments, which are only punctuated further by the unknown of just when they might happen.

20 Timeless Romance Movies That Never Get Old

Overboard (1987).

Overboard is an '80s comedy classic. Starring real-life partners Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, this film follows a bratty socialite (Hawn) who loses her memory after falling overboard her yacht. The repair person she recently fired, Russell, comes to her aid but decides to use her loss to his advantage. Claiming to be her husband, he brings her home from the hospital to take care of his brood of rambunctious boys in their stuffed to the seams house. What will happen when she falls wise to his ploy? Will she stay 'married' and give up her former lifestyle? Or abandon this strange man and his family altogether. This film, which was remade in 2018 , is available on YouTube alongside the remake.

A Strange Premise that Has Aged Surprisingly Well

While the concept in this film is undoubtedly alarming, there is a deftness to the handling of this gaslighting plot. This is due, in part, to the skill of screenwriter Leslie Dixon, who would go on to create even more cult favorites like Mrs. Doubtfire just a few years later. The chemistry between Russell and Hawn, as well as their ability to play so well off of each other comedically, is why this film stands out as so crazily re-watchable years later, Stockholm syndrome and all. By some magic of filmmaking, both Russell's character and that of his rambunctious brood, seem to somehow, inexplicably, grow on the viewer with each watch.

A Walk to Remember (2002)

The iconic teen drama A Walk to Remember is based on an early Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. The film stars Shane West as Landon and Mandy Moore as Jamie. What starts out as a classic '50s Romeo and Juliet story meets 10 Things I Hate About You takes a hard turn into reality as forces beyond their control serve to push them apart. Will Jamie's illness push them apart? Love, understanding, and passion are constants as they navigate their youth with what time they have left.

A Timeless Tearjerker

There's nothing like young love and a coming-of-age romance, particularly when that film is as highly rewatchable as this one is. Melodramatic to its core, A Walk to Remember features iconic performances by both Shane West and Mandy Moore in one of her earliest roles. Moore's musical performance is expected, but stellar. Perhaps more poignant for fans of tearjerkers are their matrimonial scenes. Be prepared to break out the tissues for this one.

‘Shōgun’ Exits Not With a Bang But a Whisper — and a Place in TV History

  • By Alan Sepinwall

Alan Sepinwall

This post contains spoilers for the finale of Shōgun .

Many years ago, when I first finished reading James Clavell’s historical epic Shōgun , I felt slightly puzzled. The novel had taken well over 1000 pages building to a civil war in feudal Japan between the wise Lord Toranaga and his ambitious rival Lord Ishido, and then it stopped right as the war was beginning, offering only the briefest of epilogues detailing what happened next? How was this good storytelling? , I wondered. Maybe there’s a sequel I don’t know about?

FX ‘s big-budget Shōgun adaptation, whose finale began streaming on Hulu yesterday, did not bother with the epilogue. It instead concludes with Blackthorne (played by Cosmo Jarvis) salvaging the wreckage of his ship, the Erasmus , with help from Toranaga’s men. He glances up at Toranaga (Hioryuki Sanada), and the two uneasy allies share a silent moment of understanding, slightly nod at one another, and then Blackthorne returns to his ship while Toranaga looks up at the sky, serene and confident in what lies ahead for him.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

And even though Clavell didn’t need to depict that, this adaptation has earned the right to do it if Kondo, Marks, and company want to.

Meet the MVP of 'Shōgun' — Ex-Punk Rocker and Japanese Movie Star Tadanobu Asano

How to watch 'american horror story: delicate part 2' online (and binge every other season), how to watch ‘shōgun’: here's where to stream new episodes online for free.

Which isn’t to say that “Dream of a Dream” lacked for great moments. Blackthorne was the weakest of the show’s main characters, which speaks less to Cosmo Jarvis’ solid work than to the way the show understandably gravitated more towards Mariko and the other natives, and to the ways their desires often came into conflict with Japanese traditions of honor during this period. But Blackthorne gets a standout scene in the finale where he offers to commit the ritualized suicide of seppuku if it means that Toranaga will spare the people of the fishing village who had been under the rule of the traitorous Yabushige. His grasp of the language is still primitive at best, but he has truly come to learn the culture and traditions from Mariko, from his widowed consort Fuji (Moeka Hoshi), and from watching Toranaga himself. Blackthorne is, of course, yet another piece on the board for Toranaga — either the rook, who moves straight ahead with brute force, or the knight, who moves in unpredictable ways compared to his allies — and this, like Toranaga secretly arranging for the burning of the Erasmus , is yet another test of loyalty. But it shows how far Blackthorne has come from the man who came to the east believing the Japanese to be less than human.

Trump Allies Hope Kristi Noem’s Puppy Killing Also Kills Her VP Chances

Rolling stones kick-start 'hackney diamonds' tour with thrilling houston concert, kristi noem doubles down on story about killing her dog from memoir: ‘i decided what i did’, billie eilish would like to reintroduce herself.

Midway through “Crimson Sky,” Mariko faces off with a few dozen members of Ishido’s personal guard. They make quick work of her own guards, and soon it is just this small, seemingly demure woman standing up to these large men of violence, determined to put on a show for all of Ishido’s other “guests” so that they will fully appreciate their true status as hostages. In that moment, Sawai’s performance looms so large that it would not be shocking if she were to somehow overtake her foes and walk out of the palace under her own steam. Instead, she is given the best possible reward: a death that releases her from a life she has long found painful, and that supports the cause of her lord, but also one caused by others, so she will not be damned to Hell according to the tenets of her Catholic religion. Even more than Toranaga, Mariko gets everything she wants.

Spy x family code: white's most disgusting joke works for one big reason.

Spy x Family CODE: White features one of the most disgusting jokes in the franchise, but a genius twist subverts it to make it work for a big reason.

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Spy x Family CODE: White!

  • Spy x Family CODE: White 's clever animation style change turns a crude joke into comic gold.
  • The film's humor builds on past crude jokes from the series, showcasing a smart twist on lowbrow humor.
  • Spy x Family 's ability to subvert expectations with its humor shines in the Poop God sequence.

Spy x Family 's first feature film, CODE: White , managed to make the franchise's most disgusting joke work for one big reason. While the premise for Spy x Family lends itself to some pretty thrilling scenes for action fans, Spy x Family is, at its heart, a comedy. The way each member of the Forger family plays off each other can be absolutely hysterical, with their funniest moments being the highlight of the show. However, when the series made it to the big screen, one extended joke sequence surprisingly was more disgusting than expected.

In Spy x Family CODE: White 's finale, Anya is held captive by Snidel and his men to retrieve an important microfilm from her. However, since she accidentally ate the chocolate it was hiding in, Snidel orders two of his men to watch her and get the information when Anya, for lack of a better term, passes it out. This leads to Anya struggling to hold it in to prevent them from getting the microfilm in an extended joke that's surprisingly lowbrow for the series. However, it all pays off when Anya can't bear to hold it in anymore and begins to hallucinate.

In this alternate world, she's greeted by the mighty Poop God as he guides her to a land of toilets that they traverse by farting. It's a remarkably crude joke, but a rapid shift in animation-style subverts it to become comic gold.

Review: Spy x Family CODE: White Offers a Fun Adventure Even New Fans Can Enjoy

Spy x family's poop god joke works with a highly-budgeted shift in animation, directed by takashi katagiri, produced by wit studio & toho animation.

This fantastical sequence involving the Poop God takes the humor of Spy x Family to its most disgusting yet. However, a quick change in animation ultimately transforms it into one of the film's best jokes. The style feels like something fans would expect from Studio Ghibli with a highly-detailed fantasy world bolstered by colors that look fantastic on the big screen.

It's clear that a lot of the animation budget went into this sequence, and it paid off. The fact that fart jokes and toilet humor are being placed against a gorgeous looking environment makes for a brilliant juxtaposition that completely subverts viewers' thoughts on these jokes being considered the lowest form of comedy.

Spy x Family Proved It Can Be Smart with Crude Humor Before the Movie

Yor's unfortunate injury made for some of her funniest moments alongside loid.

What's interesting is the brilliant handling of the Poop God sequence shouldn't come as a major surprise for most Spy x Family fans. While the series doesn't resort to toilet humor often, it has dabbled with some crude jokes in the past. One of the most notable examples comes from the season 2 premiere when Yor gets shot in the butt following one of her missions as the Thorn Princess . The entire story's jokes revolve around her trying to hide her injury from the family. The humor comes from her expressions, doing her best to absorb the pain while Loid looks in confusion during their night out.

Spy x Family 's humor has made it one of anime's best recent comedies because it knows how to play with the audience's expectations. Whether it's Yor's unfortunate injury or the hilarious Poop God sequence, the franchise is capable of taking humor that most usually groan at and making it funny with a small change. In this case, CODE: White succeeded with Spy x Family 's most disgusting joke yet as it subverted an often-maligned type of humor and brought a smart twist to the table with an animation-style swap.

Spy x Family CODE: White is now playing in theaters from Crunchyroll, Sony Pictures, WIT Studio and Toho Animation

Spy x Family Code: White (2024)

An additional story set in the Spy X Family universe, Spy x Family Code: White is an action-adventure comedy film directed by Takashi Katagiri. Loid's position in Operation Strix is under threat when his organization looks to replace him in the espionage mission. Creating what seems to be the perfect plan, Loid heads off with Yor, Anya, and Bond, help Anya create the perfect meal to impress her school's headmaster. However, the family accidentally set off a chain events that force them to save the world.
