Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. This exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso, and Kampala Districts.

The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following positions:

Position: Clinical Trials Manager – (01 Position)

Reporting to: Head of Clinical Research and Trials Platform

Duty Station: Entebbe

Job Purpose;

The position holder will be involved in high-level coordination of the LSHTM Clinical Trials Network, shaping its direction and collaborating globally to promote best practices and optimize trial capacity. The candidate should have extensive experience in clinical trials, especially in resource-constrained settings, and strong health research management skills.

Role Position: Program Manager – (02 Positions)

Reporting to: Head of Research Support Office

Dutv Station: Entebbe

The post-holder will be responsible for providing Programme Management support for a portfolio of projects within a research theme. This includes strategic management, business development support. They will operations, and administrative research coordinate research activities, supervise Grants Officers, and ensure harmonization of activities across projects to maximize outputs,

The post-holder will have a comprehensive view of the programme

ensuring coordination, management, administration, compliance,

and synergies. They will act according to MRC/UVRI&LSHTM policies

and refer major decisions to the Head of RSO and Theme Leader

Additionally, they will oversee daily project activities with the

support of Project Officers and Administrators, serve as the interface

between the research themes and the RSO, and lead pre-award

Activities.

Position: Project Officer – (01 Position)

Reporting to: Program Manager

The position holder will assist the Programme Manager/Project Manager in delivering comprehensive project management services.

Anticipating, planning, and responding to project needs to maximize resource use for optimal results, ensuring efficient and accurate management of the Unit’s external grants portfolio. Providing project management support across various projects as assigned by the Program Manager. Overseeing project implementation in

coordination with the research team and Principal Investigator (PI), serving as the main contact between the project and other support services, and providing operational support for project activities.

Clinical Officer – ENT – (03 Positions) Position Code:  COENT -922 Reports to:  Research Coordinator Station:  Kyamulibwa, Uganda Duration:  3 months

Job Purpose: The position holder will be responsible for conducting ear and hearing assessments on study participants following standardized protocols developed for this study. This will include: taking reported history, conducting hearing tests and ear examinations, offering treatment in the field (if applicable) and referring participants to health, rehabilitation and assistive product service providers as appropriate. He/she will be responsible for collecting data using tabletbased mobile application developed for this study.

The Functional Needs Assessment Survey is a population-based survey in Kalungu district Uganda. This project will field test a new survey tool, The Functional Needs Assessment Tool (FNAT). FNAT is a survey method for assessing impairment, functioning and need for rehabilitation services and assistive products in the following domains: vision, hearing, mobility, communication, cognition self-care and mental health. It uses both clinical and selfreported assessments, with data collection through a bespoke app. This study aims to conduct the first field test of FNAT to estimate i) the prevalence of functional difficulties and ii) the unmet and total need for rehabilitation services and assistive products in Kalungu district. The survey will be conducted in selected villages throughout Kalungu district.

Roles & Responsibilities • Attend study training; • Travel daily, with survey team, to different study areas throughout Kalungu and visit households selected to be included in the survey; • Complete clinical assessment of study participants following standardized survey protocols (to be covered in training) including; i) Conduct hearing tests (using a validated mobile application), ii) Conduct ear examinations to identify likely diagnosis/cause of hearing impairment, and; iii) Identify appropriate service and assistive product needs and refer as appropriate. • Ensure daily tablet-based data entry is completed thoroughly and accurately; • Liaise regularly with study coordinator and team leaders and give regular reports on progress with data collection; • Participate in Survey staff meetings and retraining sessions as required; • Follow all ethical and protocol procedures; • Follow COVID-19 Infection Prevention and Control guidelines; and, • Perform any other duties allocated by the line manager.

Person Specification • Diploma in ENT clinical medicine and community health; • Certificate in Good clinical practice; • Completed courses in: tablet-based data applications; research methods; disability, rehabilitation and/or assistive technology training; • Certificate in management/ leadership; • Should possess at least three years working experience as an ENT Clinical Officer in a clinical setting (hospital or health center); • Experience working on surveys or other types of research; • Experience of working in the community with diverse groups, including people with disabilities. • Management experience; • Knowledge on clinical assessment and interventions for ENT; • Tablet-based data collection skills; and, • Knowledge of local language of study area (Luganda).

Statistician – (01 Position) Position Code: S -523 Reports to : Head of Statistics Station: Entebbe

Job Purpose The position holder will provide support to the Impala and Malaria trials data management and statistical team ensuring the trials data is reviewed at all times and conform to the Investigators specifications. He/she will from time to time be required to carry out statistical analysis and generate some reports relating to the trial results. Roles & Responsibilities 1. Principal duties; • To provide data management and statistical support to the trials statisticians and data managers for the main Impala and Malaria trials and associated studies; • Maintaining close collaborative links with statisticians and other researchers at MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit as well as with other international partners; • To contribute to the management of ongoing studies; • To collaborate with data managers and provide a statistical perspective on designing and setting up study databases and data processing; • To perform statistical analysis of project-collected data; • To contribute to the development and preparation of protocols and data collection instruments for new research studies; • To develop statistical analysis plans for ongoing trials and to organise and prepare for milestone events such as database lock, unblinding, analysis and reporting; • To prepare regular checks on study data to help project management teams monitor recruitment and other data flows and data quality issues during the conduct of a study; • To conduct interim analyses for data monitoring committees and trial steering committees; • To prepare scientific reports and present results in meetings with colleagues and collaborators; • To development scientific articles and prepare publication-standard tables and figures; • To contribute to the Statistics section’s collegial environment including through teaching and training activities and participation in regular academic/journal club meetings; and, • To undertake additional tasks as required by the Principal Investigator or Head of Statistics or assigned supervisor. Person Specification • Master’s degree in medical statistics or closely related subjects e.g. epidemiology and mathematics; • Should possess practical experience as an applied medical statistician; • Strong analytical skills and a good understanding of statistical issues in medical research; • Should have excellent statistical programming skills using STATA or equivalent statistical analysis software; and, • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and in particular with Excel and Word;

Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world.

The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.

Job Summary:   The Clinical Trials Manager will be involved in high-level coordination of the LSHTM Clinical Trials Network, shaping its direction and collaborating globally to promote best practices and optimize trial capacity. The candidate should have extensive experience in clinical trials, especially in resource- constrained settings, and strong health research management skills. The role offers an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to advance LSHTM’s strategic priorities.
