Traineeships

  • Business Banking
  • Human Resources
  • Operations & Change
  • Retail Banking
  • Wholesale Banking

Make an impact as a trainee

Our traineeship is a two-year programme. It starts with three rotations, of which you can even do one abroad. After these three rotations you start in your permanent role.

During your traineeship you'll attend two Global Trainee events, and you'll do three training courses to strenghten your professional skills. One of these is specific and mandatory for your track, the other two training courses are to be choosen by you and match your own learning goals.

You are in charge of shaping your own career. But you don’t have to do it alone. You start in a class of trainees, who stay with you for the rest of the programme. You will become part of an international ‘year group’ of over 100 trainees – a fantastic network from which you will reap the benefits for the rest of your life. In addition, you are appointed a personal HR trainee manager who will help you shape your development and future career. Lastly, right from the start you’ll have a trainee buddy and later on in the traineeship you’ll be appointed an external coach.

We create an environment that allows you to discover, and develop, your own potential. We provide you with all the facilities you need to get the best out of yourself. The floor is yours.

Make a real difference as a trainee

At ING we offer our trainees a lot, but we also expect things in return. We want you to take the initiative. To be eager to learn and take an entrepreneurial approach. To develop and share your own vision. And of course, we expect you to deliver results. As a trainee at ING, you can- and should- make a real difference. Within your traineeship, you play a crucial role in helping us to deliver on our customer promise.

Our customer promise

Empowering people to stay a step ahead in life and in business  – that is our  purpose . To be able to help our customers make their own decisions, we need to know what it is they want to achieve. We must be crystal clear about what we can offer them. Therefore, we promise our customers four things:

  • We keep banking  clear and easy
  • We ensure that you can organize your finances  anytime and anywhere
  • We  empower  you to move ahead with confidence
  • And we continue to  improve  what we do, every day

As a trainee we offer you a permanent contract, attractive employment conditions and a strong focus on personal development. Right from day one, your traineeship is all about learning, developing and performing, but it’s also a lot of fun.

ing thesis internship

Your first rotation: dive into our business

During your first year you’ll do two project of six months each. We will help you to find your first project, taking into account how we got to know you during  the selection procedure  as well as your own personal preferences and, of course, ING’s requirements. During your first or second rotation you’ll also attend your first Global Trainee event: a week where all trainees of your ‘year group’ come together in Amsterdam (if circumstances allow) to learn, network and develop yourself.

Your second rotation: will you opt to go abroad?

Halfway through the first six months of your traineeship, it’s up to you to start arranging your second project. Now it’s a matter of making use of your network and your own initiative! Utilise your contacts with other departments and colleagues who might be able to help you. Many trainees choose to go abroad for their second rotation, and ING offers you  opportunities to do so, if circumstances allow. Working internationally provides you with a wealth of valuable experience, both personally and professionally.

Your third rotation: indepth knowledge or gain experience in another traineeship track?

You’re still in charge, your third rotation is arranged by you. Your HR trainee manager will help you in the decision making; will this last rotation be done to deepen knowledge of your business (within your track), do you decide to do this rotation within a different track? Imagine: as an Operations & Change or Retail Banking trainee you can get Analytics experience, or as a Risk trainee you can get a better understanding of our Wholesale Banking business.

Your first job: learning while working

After your three rotations, it’s time for your permanent role. You will remain part of the ITP. You’ll develop your key competencies and acquire valuable experience. And you’ll deliver tangible results: your work will make a real difference at ING.
