Paraphrasing is an essential skill in IELTS Writing Task 1, and mastering it can significantly improve your performance. Here are detailed steps to help you paraphrase effectively:

Understand the Original Text:

Before you begin paraphrasing, it's vital to fully comprehend the original prompt. Read it several times to grasp the core message and main ideas.

Look for the key points and data presented in the chart, graph, or table. Understanding these elements is crucial to accurately paraphrase the prompt.

Use Synonyms Wisely:

Identifying and using synonyms is a fundamental part of paraphrasing. However, it's important to use them wisely.

Not all words have exact synonyms, and some synonyms can change the meaning if not used appropriately. Always consider the context before replacing words.

Change the Sentence Structure:

Altering the sentence structure is a powerful tool in paraphrasing. This can involve changing from active to passive voice, or modifying the sentence format.

For example, if the original sentence is in the form of a statement, you might consider turning it into a clause or vice versa.

Keep it Accurate:

The most crucial aspect of paraphrasing is maintaining the accuracy of the original text. Ensure that the paraphrased sentence conveys the same information.

Avoid adding your own opinions or altering the data. The goal is to restate the original information in a new form, not to create new content.

Example in Detail:

Let’s examine a real IELTS Academic Task 1 question and its paraphrased version in detail:

Original Question Statement:  “The chart below shows the amount of money per week spent on fast foods in Britain. The graph shows trends in consumption of fast foods.”

Paraphrased:  “The provided bar chart delineates the weekly expenditure on fast food items in the UK, while the line graph illustrates the consumption patterns of these foods over time.”

Analysis of Paraphrasing:

Original to Paraphrased:

"chart below" becomes "provided bar chart," indicating the type of chart more specifically.

"amount of money" is paraphrased to "expenditure," a more formal synonym.

"per week" changes to "weekly," which is a concise way of expressing the same idea.

"fast foods in Britain" is transformed into "fast food items in the UK," using a synonym for the country and slightly varying the phrase.

"graph shows trends" is rephrased to "line graph illustrates," where "shows" is replaced with "illustrates," and "trends" with "consumption patterns," providing a richer description.

Specifying 'line graph' instead of the more generic 'graph' provides clarity about the type of data representation, which is critical in accurately describing the task.

'trends' -> 'patterns':

'Patterns' suggest a more nuanced and detailed observation of data, compared to 'trends,' which can be more general. It indicates a deeper analysis of the information.

'consumption' -> 'consumption patterns':

Expanding 'consumption' to 'consumption patterns' adds depth, indicating not just the act of consuming but also the manner and trends of consumption.

'below' -> 'presented below':

Paraphrasing is an essential skill for both academic task 1 and  task 2 .

And, as you probably know, it’s also extremely useful for the IELTS reading and IELTS listening components of the IELTS exam .

In this tutorial you will learn:

Paraphrasing involves manipulating the words in a sentence or phrase so that they read differently but convey the same meaning. It is also called re-writing, and you should learn to do it before taking your IELTS test.

It can also help in listening and reading tests, though it’s mainly used in speaking and writing. Simply put, you’ll have a better chance of achieving your desired score if you know how to paraphrase.

To learn the paraphrasing skill to perfection, you can always take assistance from a paraphrasing tool that expresses the same idea in different ways.

Paraphrasing requires mental processes and can help you understand questions better; this is one reason why I encourage students to paraphrase test questions before answering them.

In task 1, the first sentence must always be a paraphrased version of the question / title. Paraphrasing (or re-writing) can be done in a number of ways, but the easiest is to replace words with their synonyms.

You can prove to the examiner that you have a broad vocabulary and that you can use it effectively by paraphrasing the sentence using a few simple synonyms. This will score you more points in the test.

This should be your initial paragraph and you should let your examiner know you’re starting a new one by skipping a line.

An example description of a question from an IELTS Task 1 is shown below:

The proportion of the population aged 50 and above in three different states in the USA between 1920 and 2020 is shown in the graphs below.

I can quickly craft a good description by paraphrasing this description:

The line graphs compare the percentage of individuals aged 50 and above, as measured over a century in three U.S. states.

Information about the per-capita percentage of car ownership between 2000 and 2005 in the USA is given in the chart below.

Summarize the information by making comparisons where necessary and picking out and reporting on the main features.

First sentence

The increase in car ownership between 2000 and 2005 in the USA is shown in the chart.

When should we paraphrase on IELTS?

You need to paraphrase a phrase, word or an idea in several ways in IELTS writing task 1 and 2.

For instance, if you use the word "school" in a paragraph, use words like "university", "academic institution" or "college" in the rest of the essay.

How does a re-written sentence fit into the remaining part of my essay?

The second paragraph of an essay with four paragraphs should be the overview:

  • Paragraph 1- Paraphrased sentence
  • Paragraph 2- Overview
  • Paragraph 3- Details
  • Paragraph 4- Details

Writing the overview before the details lets the examiner know that you understand the main features and helps you when you write out the details. That's why I tell my students to do it. You simply take the points you stated in your overview and back them up with data in the details paragraphs.

Is a conclusion necessary?

Not at all. Conclusions are just a summary of your opinions or ideas. Writing a conclusion is not mandatory, because this is not an opinion essay. Save your conclusions for task 2 .

Here are some common words/phrases and their paraphrased versions:

  • chart = bar chart ( click here to learn how to describe a bar chart )
  • graph = line graph
  • shows = illustrates (or 'compares' if the graph is comparing)
  • diagram = figure
  • people in the UK = British
  • people in Australia = Australians
  • information = data
  • from 1997 to 2000 = between 1997 and 2000
  • the number of = the figure for
  • from 1997 to 2000 = over a period of 3 years = over three years
  • the proportion of = the figure for
  • how to produce = the process of producing
  • proportion = percentage (segment and fraction are also useful terms for describing a pie chart )
  • in three countries = in the UK, Australia and New Zealand (i.e., name the countries)

Tips for answering a map question

Here are practical ways to help you get the first sentence in task 1 completed correctly and more quickly:

  • Look at the question and the title of the graph/chart. You'll get to know what you need to write.
  • Never copy all the words in the question -you can’t do this, because the examiner will not count those words when evaluating your work
  • Don't change all the words in the question. Instead, change some and keep others.
  • You can’t repeat whole sentences and long phrases, but you can borrow words. Also, remember that some common or technical words cannot be easily replaced.
  • Be sure to include the main ideas/points in the question, and write the main topic of the chart/graph.
  • With practice, one sentence or maybe two shorter ones will be enough – don’t write too much here.
  • Describe the topic in the first sentence – don’t try to write a summary of the entire chart's details.
  • Read a newspaper article and write a summary yourself. Show it to a friend. Here are some samples of academic task 1 essays. And here are some professional non-ielts sources written by experts: Economist Daily Chart , Guardian Data .
  • The phrase "figures for/the figure for" is a good one that most people don't use. For example, 'figures for unemployment in 5 countries are shown on the graph'.
  • You’ll be able to write the introduction for task 1 swiftly and start the test confidently if you practice this strategy.

Now that we understand the exam’s marking system, we can prevent common errors that reduce scores and give the examiners exactly what they want.

Paraphrasing for IELTS Writing Task 1

Paraphrasing is an essential skill for IELTS, and it is particularly important for IELTS Writing Task 1. In this exam, you are required to paraphrase the question in order to write your first sentence. If you cannot do this, it becomes very difficult to pass the exam. If you copy the question, you will be deducted marks and it may cost you a high band score. Fortunately, learning to paraphrase is not difficult. In this PPT, I will show you how to paraphrase an IELTS Writing Task 1 question.

Writing Task 1 – How To Paraphrase

In this post, we will look at the importance of being able to paraphrase . Paraphrasing is important, not only for the writing test but for all of the other parts of the test too. Being able to paraphrase will show the examiner that you have a wide vocabulary, helping you to achieve a higher band score.  

To paraphrase text is to read the question then rewrite it in your own words . You should not copy words straight from the question, instead change the order of the words and choose words with a similar meaning (a synonym ). This means you are using different words to write about the same idea. 

Paraphrasing

Here is an example of a Writing Task 1 Question >>

The graph below shows the average monthly temperatures in three well-known cities. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Paraphrased >>

The line graph illustrates the climate conditions in Athens, Barcelona, and Sydney over the period of one year.

Here I changed temperatures to conditions (synonym) and then I added the three city names instead of saying ‘in three well-known cities’.

Using Synonyms

Synonyms are words you use when you want to write a word that has a similar meaning to the original word in the question . For example;

  • Area / space
  • Map / diagram / picture
  • Amount / number
  • Car / automobile / vehicle
  • Price / amount / cost
  • High / big / great 

When paraphrasing the question, you don’t need to change all of the words, but you should try to change most of them. Be careful though, because choosing a word that has a similar meaning – not the same meaning can make the meaning of the sentence change or become unclear. 

The best way to practice this is to have a look at writing task 1 questions and paraphrase/re-write the question in your own words. Whilst practising you can use an online thesaurus tool to help you find synonyms and learn new words.

Paraphrasing is essential in the IELTS test. It's a great skill to have for speaking and it's especially important for the writing section. This skill shows that you not only understand the question but that you can discuss it fully. If you write the original statement in your tasks, it may not be counted and it could hurt your word count.

What is paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing is writing the same information using different vocabulary, phrases, and structures.

How do I paraphrase?

Paraphrasing can be a daunting task. Here are some simple techniques that can help you paraphrase well in your writing:

Use synonyms

Synonyms are words that have the same meaning. Using synonyms is an easy way to create a new sentence that has the same meaning.

Some people think that parents should teach their children how to be good members of society.

Some individuals believe that parents should teach their children how to be a positive part of their community.

Make sure that the synonyms you are using have the same meaning, and not similar, as this could change the meaning of the sentence.

Some people believe that car emissions have a massive impact on the environment.

Incorrect: Some people believe that car emissions have a large impact on the environment.

Correct: Some people believe that car emissions have an enormous impact on the environment.

Be careful because some synonyms can be used in some situations but not in others.

The amount of fish consumed in the world has increased dramatically.

Incorrect: The amount of fish used in the world has increased dramatically.

The amount of fuel consumed when driving largely depends on the vehicle.

Correct: The amount of fuel used when driving largely depends on the vehicle. 

Also, grammar is important when using synonyms.

Wealth does not necessarily guarantee happiness.

Having money does not necessarily ensure satisfaction.

2. Change word order

Putting words and phrases in different places within the sentence is another simple way to paraphrase.

The percentage of stressed children in western society has increased by 15% in the last ten years.

In the last ten years, the percentage of stressed children in western society has increased by 15%.

Again, the meaning of the sentence may change when changing the word order.

Successful sports professionals earn more money than people in other important professions.

Incorrect: People in other important professions earn more money than successful sports professionals.

Correct: People in other important professions earn less money than successful sports professionals.

3. Change word form

Along with word order, you can change word form. This involves changing vocabulary from nouns to verbs, adjectives to adverbs, and so on.

Nowadays, crimes are becoming more violent.

Nowadays, crimes are being committed more violently.

Once again, grammar is important when changing word form.

The level of crime has increased noticeably in different ways.

Incorrect: There was an increase noticeably in the level of crime in different ways.  

Correct: The increase in the level of crime has been noticeable in different ways.

4. Active to Passive

Changing your sentences from active to passive voice can be more difficult than the other techniques; however, it shows a variety in your grammar structures.

Active: Technological advances have replaced people in the workforce.

Passive: People in the workforce have been replaced by technological advances.

Make sure you know how to change the structure of a sentence before trying to use the passive voice.

Children today play very violent video games.

Incorrect: Children today are played by very violent video games.

Correct: Very violent video games are played by children today.

5. Combine sentences

The ability to combine sentences gives you more opportunity to change word order as well as shows off more variety in your writing.

Some people believe that animals should have the same rights as humans. Other people believe that animals should be used for various needs such as food and research.

Some people believe that animals should have the same rights as humans, while others believe they should be used for various needs such as food and research.

When combining sentences, make sure that the transitions you are using are correct.

Some people believe that logging is a serious problem. They believe that it may lead to the extinction of animal life.

Incorrect: Some people believe that logging is a serious problem, while others believe that it may lead to the extinction of animal life.

Correct: Some people believe that logging is a serious problem and it may lead to the extinction of animal life.

Practice using these techniques in your writing to become more comfortable with paraphrasing. Paraphrasing can lead to better writing, which in turn, can lead to a better writing score.

The maps below show the layout of James Park in 2017 and the proposed changes to the park in 2027.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write Perfect IELTS Academic Task 1 Introductions: How to Paraphrase

Each report should have an introduction. Each introduction has only one role– presenting the information in the task in one or two sentences. If you have several charts or a chart and a table, you may have two sentences, but not more .

The easiest way to write an introduction is to paraphrase the task sentence .

In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase the task in your introduction. This lesson is actually a free preview of my IELTS Academic Pack , which can help you prepare for your IELTS exam in less time and achieve a higher score.

Let’s start with charts.

The chart below shows the levels of employment in different sectors of the UK economy from 1910 to 2010…

My introduction is:

The bar chart illustrates how many people were employed in four major industry sectors in the UK between 1910 and 2010.

If you compare it to the task, my introduction has the same meaning as the first sentence in the task. Let me show you how you can paraphrase each part of your task sentence.

Paraphrasing the subject

Your task may begin with “ the chart or charts below show ”. In this case, you can add the type of chart:

  • The line chart/graph
  • The bar chart/graph
  • The pie charts

If you have several, beginning your report by saying “the pie chart and line graph” is bulky and unnecessary.

  • The pie chart and line graph

Just say, the graphs or the charts, it’s okay to repeat this word. You can also begin with “the data”.

  • The graph(s)

What if you have a diagram? You can use the word diagram. There is no synonym.

  • The diagram

In your report, you must use precise language. Don’t worry about repeating keywords.

Therefore, if you have maps, say “maps” and if you have a table, say “a table or the data”.

Paraphrasing the verb

Next, “the chart/diagram/map shows ”. Here are some other alternatives:

  • The diagram illustrates.
  • The chart displays…
  • The data provide information on… (the data is plural)
  • The table gives information about…

To show , to illustrate and to display are more universal and can be used in almost any type of task. The phrases to provide information and to give information work well in some sentences but not in others.

Read your sentences carefully to see which verb works better.

Paraphrasing the object

Now, how can you paraphrase the main part of the task sentence?

The chart shows the top ten countries for oil production and consumption in 2010 and 2015.

How can we rephrase the part in bold? How about this:

I looked for a synonym for each word:

Top = Leading. Ten = Dozen (since 10 is close to a dozen). Countries = Nations.

  • The bar graph illustrates the leading dozen of nations…

Do not do this. You won’t be able to find synonyms with the same meaning for each word. It’s very important to keep your language precise .

Instead, you could look at the main words and see how you could change the form of these words: Production = To produce. Consumption = To consume.

  • The bar graph provides information on the countries that produced and consumed the most oil…

You can also use some question words to change your sentence structure. These are which, what, how much, how, etc. Here are some examples:

  • The bar graph illustrates which countries produced and consumed the most oil in two time periods (2010 and 2015).
  • The bar graph shows how much oil was produced and consumed by the leading countries in two time periods. (passive)

Another way to paraphrase is to add the words changes, amount or level , if they make sense in your sentence:

  • The bar chart displays the amount of oil produced and consumed by the leading countries in the years 2010 and 2015.
  • The bar graph shows the changes in production and consumption of oil by ten leading countries between 2010 and 2015.

Paraphrasing the time period

Lastly, the time period.  Our task ends with “ in 2010 and 2015” .

You can say:

  • in the years 2010 and 2015
  • in two time periods (2010 and 2015)
  • in two time periods

Sometimes, you’re given an interval: between 1970 and 2020 . In this case, you could say:

  • from 1970 to 2020
  • over/during a fifty-year period

To summarise, the aim of your introduction is to present the information in the task. And the easiest way to do that is to paraphrase the first task sentence.

Don’t try to be original and don’t worry about repeating keywords. As long as you don’t copy long phrases from the task, you’re good.

When writing your introduction think:

Can you change the form of words?

  • Production --> To produce       
  • Consumption --> To consume

Can you add question words?

Can you use the following words?

  • For charts and tables: changes, amount, level
  • For maps: changes
  • For diagrams: a process, stages or how something is made/grown

It’s important to write your introduction quickly, to have more time for the all-important overview and at least two body paragraphs.

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 Introduction: Paraphrase & Overview

Watch the video on how to write an introduction for Academic writing task 1. Essential information on how to paraphrase the diagram description with examples of a "basic" paraphrase and "more complex" sentences. The importance of including a clear overview in your answer and how to avoid a minimum score in the Task achievement criterion. 

Always begin your introduction with a paraphrase of the description (stated in the task) and title of the diagram.  Paraphrasing shows the examiner that you understand the task.

Paraphrasing is rewriting the description and diagram title using synonyms, changing the form of the word (verb to noun), changing the word order and using different structures but keeping the same meaning.

Do not copy the information and/or diagram title word for word as this will be deducted from your word count. You are allowed to copy proper nouns such as “London”.

A typical beginning for the introduction is  “The diagram/table shows”.   This is fine but for examples of more complex structures...

The table shows the number of medals the top ten countries won at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

More Complex: Illustrated in the table is the number of medals the top ten countries gained at the 2012 Olympic Games which were held in London.

More Complex:

The number of medals gained by ten different countries at the 2012 Olympic Games which were held in London is depicted in the table.

A clear overview is ESSENTIAL in your introduction and failure to include it will result in a band score of 5 for task achievement. 

An overview is a short summary of the information in the diagram and each diagram type requires a different overview.

An overview should not be confused with describing main features and should not include data from the diagram.

Always begin your overview with “Overall,” this shows the examiner you have included the overview. 

Overview Vs Conclusion. Don’t write a conclusion for Academic task 1. The overview and conclusion serve the same purpose, that is they both summarize the information in the diagram. So, including a conclusion is repeating the information in the overview.

Academic Writing Task 1 Strategy

  • Understand how the test is marked. Knowing the marking criteria will allow you to give the examiner exactly what they need.
  • Paraphrase the question. It is best to paraphrase the question in the first paragraph. You can do this by using synonyms.
  • Write the overview. To write your overview , pick 3 or 4 of the main features and write about them generally without referencing any data.

General Training Writing Task 1 in 5 Simple Steps

  • Understand how the test is marked. Knowing the marking criteria is the best way of giving the examiner exactly what they need and nothing else.
  • Decide whether the letter is formal or informal. This part is easy. If the question asks you to write to a ‘friend’, it should be an informal letter. If the question asks you to write to anyone else, it should be a formal letter. It is that simple!
  • Discuss each bullet point from the question. Make sure to take a new paragraph for each bullet point. This will make your letter easy to read and understand.
  • Sign off your letter. Don’t overcomplicate this part. Include a sign-off suitable to your letter’s tone and write your name beneath.

How many paragraphs should I write?

Introduction

You can put the overview at the end if you'd like.

Can I use idioms?

No, you should typically avoid using idioms in Writing Task 1.

The only time this is acceptable is if you are taking the General Training test and must write an informal letter.

Should I write a conclusion for Task 1 Academic?

No. A conclusion is a summary of YOUR ideas and your opinion. Task 1 is simply reporting what you see, so there shouldn't be any of your ideas or your opinion.

Instead of a conclusion, you should write an overview.

The reason lots of people get confused about this is that some teachers, books and even one British Council website call the overview a 'conclusion'. It's not a conclusion, it's an overview.

Finally, it does not matter where you put the overview paragraph. We teach our students to put it after the introduction, but it is also fine to have it as your final paragraph.

How many words should I write?

You must write at least 150 words in Writing Task 1 (yes, the examiners will count them!)

I would suggest that you aim to write around 160-170 words for Task 1. Aiming for 20-30 words more than the required amount makes you more likely to reach the word limit without setting an unrealistic goal.

Will I lose marks if I don't write enough words?

Yes. If you don't write the required number of words, you will lose marks in 'Task Achievement' for not answering the question fully. Read more here .

Can I use contractions?

No, should not use contractions when you are writing an academic essay or formal letter. However, it is fine to use contractions in an informal letter.

IELTS Academic task 1 Lesson 1: how to write introduction?

You should start your task 1 answer by introducing the graph from your question. Just write 1-2 sentences to say what your graph shows and for what period of time (if there is one).

To do this, you need to paraphrase text from your task 1 question.  

Example of good introduction :

Question : The graphs below give information about computer ownership as a percentage of the population between 2002 and 2010, and by level of education for the years 2002 and 2010.

Introduction : The bar charts show data about computer ownership, with a further classification by level of education, from 2002 to 2010.

To write a good introduction, follow these techniques :

Change introductory expressions

the graph/chart/table/diagram

  • gives information about/on
  • provides information about/on
  • illustrates
  • gives reason why (only if graph provides reasons for smth)
  • explains why (only if graph provides explanation for smth)
  • compares (only if several items are compared)
  • compares smth in terms of smth the charts compare two cities in terms of the number of employed people.
  • compares smth in year1 and year2 the graph compares the population in 2000 and 2013.
  • “The pie charts provide information on the proportion of males and females working in agricultural sector.” OR “The pie charts show the proportion of males and females working in agricultural sector.”
  • “The table compares five companies in terms of the number of employees.” OR “The table illustrates the number of employees in five companies.”

Paraphrasing

You can rewrite a phrase by using the word how :

  • shows the number of people ... = shows how many people ...
  • depicts changes in spending on ... = depicts how much changed spending on ...

You can rewrite a phrase by using synonyms :

  • number of = quantity of (not interchangeable with amount of )
  • spending = expenditure
  • rate = percentage
  • ratio = proportion
  • information = data
  • change can be sometimes replaced by increase , decrease or variation
  • share = portion
  • place = site

Time periods

  • from 1985 to 1995 = between 1985 and 1995
  • in 1985 = in the year 1985
  • in 1985 and 1995 = in 1985 and 1995 respectively = in the years 1985 and 1995
  • The table shows consumption rates from 2001 to 2004.
  • The graph shows consumption rates in 2012 and 2015 respectively.

Paraphrasing in use:

See how the topic was paraphrased to make a very good task 1 introduction (picture on the right).

  • Show is changed to compare
  • Percentages added
  • Different added
  • In 2007 and 2009 → In the years 2007 and 2009

As you see, you don't have to make up a completely new introduction. Just take the given topic as a base, and change/add some details.

Practice. Choose the correct options:

  • The table shows the amount of students who study abroad in 2001 and 2011. The table shows the number of students who study abroad in 2001 and 2011.

Amount or number? Note that students are countable.

  • The graph illustrate China's annual growth rate of exports of goods. The graph illustrates China's annual growth rate of exports of goods.

Look at the verb that follows the word graph . Hmm, the graph should be singular, so illustrates is the correct option.

  • The line graph shows how many Finnish people went to the cinema between June and October 2014. The line graph shows how much Finnish people went to the cinema between June and October 2014.

You can say how much water or how much effort (these nouns are uncountable). But people are countable, so you should use how many in this case.

  • The pie charts compare the world population of 1900 with 2000 . The pie charts compare the world population in 1900 and 2000 .

You should use phrase in + year , not of + year or at + year . Moreover, it seems like you compare population with year in the first sentence.

  • The bar chart gives information about average household expenditure in Japan. The bar chart shows information about average household expenditure in Japan.

You can use either gives information about or shows , but not both at the same time.

In the last paraphrasing exercise here we looked at paraphrasing a part of a body paragraph. Here is a useful blog post on How to paraphrase in IELTS writing.

Paraphrasing is an important skill to practice in IELTS and is necessary for the writing tasks. If you can paraphrase well it shows that you have a wide range of vocabulary and this goes toward getting a high band score in Lexical resource.

Key points about paraphrasing

In the introduction of your essay the first thing you should do is paraphrase the topic question by using synonyms or changing the word-formation. I f you just copy the original question you will lose points .

A good technique is to change the form of the words by using: a verb, gerund, adjective or noun . Look at the examples below.

People increasingly access the news online these days rather than buying newspapers and magazines to find out what is going on in the world. There is an increase in people accessing the news online these days rather than buying newspapers and magazines to find out what is going on in the world.

I have changed two words above from Adverb+ verb in sentence 1, to noun phrase + gerund and re-ordered the sentence slightly. Using this technique you need to be confident with your grammar if you decide to change the word-formation.

This task is a problem-solution essay. Choose words from the list and try paraphrasing it. You do not need to paraphrase the instruction words. Check my answer when you have finished.

a) People residing in large urban areas have to deal with a lot of issues in their day to day lives.

B) there are a number of issues that people living in cities have to cope with in their everyday lives..

I did not use the word ‘citizens ‘as it doesn’t fit well, the word ‘people’ is hard to paraphrase so I kept it.

Some words cannot be used here such as ‘ suburbs’  or  ‘towns’  there is a difference in meaning to ‘cities’. Also the word ‘huge’ doesn’t feel right here so I didn’t use it.

Remember that not every word has to be paraphrased , there is no black and white answer to paraphrasing, it depends on your vocabulary and how you can use synonyms correctly. Make sure the meaning stays the same or you will lose marks.

Some words do not go well here such as ‘ folks’ which is too informal and ‘humankind’ which does not sound right in this situation.

The words ‘data’ and ‘know-how’ just do not match well here and could change the meaning slightly.

Again, I have kept the word ‘people’ as this is hard to paraphrase.

IELTS Writing Task 2: Paraphrasing Practice

IELTS writing task 2 paraphrasing practice exercise. To get a good mark in IELTS writing task 2 for the criterion of vocabulary, you need to be able to paraphrase. The exercise below is a chance for you to practice your paraphrasing skills.

Paraphrase the words in this paragraph using the words in the box below. Only paraphrase a word if you are sure it is appropriate to do so.

Many people, when driving their cars, go over the speed limit in city centers. As a way of solving this, the government should put more speed cameras on major streets to put people off  speeding. If this is done, more people who speed will be caught and this problem will eventually be solved.

Many people, when driving their cars, exceed  the speed limit in urban centers . As a way of solving this, the authorities ought to install more speed cameras on major streets to deter people from  speeding. By doing this , more people who speed will be caught and this problem will eventually be resolved .

Common Mistakes and Explanations

  • Collocation: drive a car, not ride a car. We use the verb “ride” with bicycles.
  • A town is not a city.  You can write “city center” or “urban center”. A town is much smaller and this essay is not about small towns and villages.
  • The government can usually be paraphrased with the word “authorities”.
  • The word “should” can be paraphrased as “ought to”. This is a common paraphrase.
  • If you are writing about setting up or putting up equipment, you can use the word “install”.
  • “to deter” is used to put people off committing a crime or an offence. It is actually a better word to use than “put off” for formal essay writing.
  • “By doing this” and “As a way of solving this” both have the same meaning in this context. You can’t write “As an answer for solving this” – it isn’t correct English even though the meaning is the same.
  • “people” are people. We rare use the word “citizen” in an essay about transport. However, it would be acceptable to use it in the second sentence which refers to the government.
  • “people” cannot be paraphrased as “humans” except in one context – please watch the video below to learn. Any student making this mistake is not studying effectively. The video below explains this very clearly so you should not be making this mistake.
  • “caught red handed” must be written as it is shown. You can never write “caught red”. There are three words in this idiom. However, this expression is mainly for theft or other crimes in which a person is caught face to face by the police. It can’t be used for speed offences caught by camera.
  • “vehicles” is used when we don’t know what type of transport is being written about or when we refer to different types. This essay is about cars only which means you can’t use the word “vehicle”.
  • This paragraph is about “streets”. This is not the same as a “motorway”. A motorway is a very large road outside a city which contains two or three lines in both directions for heavy traffic.

Results and Advice

  • If you had one mistakes, it is acceptable for band 7 or 8.
  • If you have two or three mistakes, it is around band 6.
  • More Mistakes = Lower Score
  • You need to learn both the use and meaning of a word.
  • Don’t aim for range until you can achieve accuracy.
  • When you learn a noun or verb, learn the full collocation.
  • When you learn a word, learn when you can and cannot use it.
  • When you learn an idiom, learn if the words can be changed or not.

Personally I think “cross the speed limit” is not correct, it should be “exceed the speed limit”. Moreover, “to speed” means move quickly; so no need to use “over speeding”. The word “issue” is not appropriate in this paragraph, I suppose. Maybe “bad situation” is a better one, or just keep the word “problem”. 🙂

Two possible paraphrases I have managed to come up with:

1. Government should install many surveillance devices to discourage speeding automobiles since there are high number of people who cross the speed limit at the central town. Perhaps, this would enable law enforcement bring down those in speed violation and at the end put a full stop for this problem.

2. Towards solving the problem of speeding vehicle, the government should installing several surveillance devices, which acts as a harbinger of the consequences, because there are several people who have drove their automobiles over the speed limit in the central town. Implementing this, enables law enforcement to bring down those in violation, and at the end put an end to this problem.

We don’t use “by virtue of” any more. Otherwise, they have the same meaning – but this doesn’t mean you can use them in the same way. Always review how the grammar structure changes.

It is not normal to use such language in IELTS essays. I would avoid it. The opinions are from people – not analysts. And the word “commentators” is an inappropriate word to use. There are many words you can paraphrase in your essay- the word “people” isn’t usually one of them. Please watch the video above again which explains about being more careful with paraphrasing.

For this question, you need to refer to the whole paragraph or at least the five or six sentences surrounding that statement. It is common in IELTS that your answer will not be found in one sentence only and references might be made in other sentences.

There difference is US English and UK English. For writing, you need to choose one only. For speaking, it is fine to have a mixed accent as long as pronunciation is easy to understand.

No. Most essays will have either two body paragraphs or three. But it depends on your main points and what you want to say. The examiner is marking you on logic – so organise logically.

Q: Prevention is better than cure. Do you agree or disagree that out of the country’s health budget, a large proportion should be diverted from treatment to spending on health education and preventive measures.

A: The eradication of diseases is the focus of many countries in terms of health. However, disease prevention through health education is the lesser concern. In my view, the government should equally support both of these programs in terms of finances to create a better and healthier community.

Hllo liz I have required a great practice material, for improve my band score. My target was to achieve minimum 7 band score overall. But, i scored only 5.5 band as on 27 june, 2015. I took IELTS GT exam for 3 times to get a band score of 7+ in each modules and below are the score that I got:

L8, S7, R6.5, W5 L7, S7, R6, W6.5 L7, S6.5, R6, W6.5.

As you can see my writing is not upto the mark. Kindly provide an effective method to reach my goal and also I would like to do some practice exercise for planning and paraphrasing also, the link provided for paraphrasing practice is not available.

Hi, Liz. First of all, I would like to thank you for all of the amazing resources you have created. I watched many of your video lessons and used them to prepare for my IELTS Academic test. I got my results this week and they were: Listening 6.5, Reading 8, Writing 6.5, and Speaking 9. I’ve got nothing to complain about the Listening part because I got distracted during the first track and didn’t hear the exact words and also because I also had trouble with another conversation about giving directions in a building. I’m not good at giving and getting directions. Not even in my native language, so I know I must work on that. However, I am puzzled at my writing score. I am pretty sure I made no grammar nor spelling mistakes. I felt I did well on Writing Task 2 but perhaps my graph analysis was rather simple. I’ve read about other examinees complaining about having a hard time to score higher than 6.5 in the writing section. Any thoughts on this? What would you suggest to improve this score? Thanks.

Don’t change the order of doing the skills. In fact, I’m not sure that you can. The time management is during the skill. For example, sticking with only 20 minutes for each reading passage and spending no more than 20 mins on writing task 1. All the best Liz

IELTS Writing Task 2 Course

Introductions 1: paraphrasing the question.

There are many ways to write an introduction paragraph but a simple and tested technique is the following:

Paraphrase the question (use synonyms/ different parts of speech/ different word order etc.)

Give your opinion

Outline your 2/ 3 main ideas (which will be in body paragraphs 1 & 2)

Let’s begin by looking at how to paraphrase the IELTS question in your introduction.

Paraphrase the IELTS Question

A. use the passive:.

One of the best ways to begin is to change the active “some people believe” to the passive, “it is believed by some people” or vice-versa.

b. Use a similar, but different verb:

Verbs such as “argue”, “believe”, or “think” are interchangeable in this context. So, if the question says, “Some people believe ”, you can write “It is argued by some people”, or just, “ It is often argued ”.

c. Use synonyms

In the rest of the sentence, look for synonyms which can replace words in the question. For example, “fixed” becomes “determined” , “develop” becomes “forms” , “personality” becomes “character” , and “because” becomes “due to” .

d. Change parts of speech or word order

You can also change parts of speech, word order or grammatical structure. For example, we develop our personality… becomes the development of our personality…

Look at the underlined words/ phrases in the following IELTS Writing Task 2 questions. Think of at least one synonym/ parallel phrase for each. (Remember that the synonym needs to fit the context of the question).

i. Due to the fast pace of modern life an increasing number of people regularly eat fast food for their main meals. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
ii. Many people argue that restaurants should be required to disclose the nutritional information of the dishes they serve. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
iii. Nowadays people waste a lot of food that was bought from shops and restaurants. Why do you think people waste food? What can be done to reduce the amount of food they throw away?

Paraphrase the whole IELTS Writing Task 2 questions. Try to use synonyms, change word order, use the passive and use different parts of speech.

Some people prefer to eat at restaurants, whereas others prefer to eat home-made food.

Which do you prefer?

Paraphrase: While some people have a preference for eating out, others would rather prepare food and eat at home.

iv. Fast food restaurants are helpful because they save people time and effort in today’s busy world. Do you agree or disagree?
v. Many people believe that home-cooked meals are better for one’s health. Those who disagree argue that it is healthier to eat restaurant meals. What’s your opinion?

How is the ielts writing score calculated.

IELTS Writing score is calculated on four different criteria. Each criteria has a weightage of 25% of your total marks of that task. The examiner will give seperate bands for Task 1 and Task 2 and then the final IELTS Writing score will be calculated.
