Band 7+: The system used for rubbish/garbage area collection in your local area is not working properly. This is causing problems for you and your neighbours. Write a letter to the local council. In your letter -Describe how the rubbish collection system is not working properly -Explain how this is affecting you and your neighbours -Suggest what should be done about the problem

Dear Madam,

I am writing this letter to express the situation that the community of “Hougang Avenue” is facing due to the faulty and inadequate management system, especially for the last three to four weeks.

Concerning the problem, the number of rubbish bins installed in the area is insufficient considering the total population. Moreover, for the last couple of weeks, garbage collector lorries have not been picking up the trash in time, and the deposits of all waste started to scatter around the bins or on the streets.

Since the garbage bins have been overflowing with litter, it attracts some street dogs who rampage the rubbish every night. It has also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, houseflies, and other insects which can lead to the spread of infectious diseases. In addition, the bad odour from garbage has started reaching our house which hampers our peaceful and healthy living.

I would like to suggest that the local council look into the matter urgently and make sure the garbage lorries come to our community every other day to empty the bins. Besides, for a long-term solution, more large waste bins should be erected in the region as soon as possible and the garbage should be picked up promptly.

I hope you will take immediate measures to solve the problems and consider my suggestions.

Yours faithfully,

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1: GARBAGE [ANSWERS]

Why do some people throw garbage on the street instead of using trash bins?

Well, those kinds of people simply do not care about the environment. Those are the kind of people who lack self-discipline and throwing their trash anywhere has become their habit. It’s not that they lack education but it’s because they don’t have any respect for the environment.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

Lack [noun] – absence; shortage; inefficiency

Self-discipline [noun] – the ability to pursue what one thinks is right

Habit [noun] – practice; custom

i.) Here the speaker gave a realistic answer and explained his argument thoroughly. His reason focused on the character of the person and that made his answer very realistic.

What do you do if you see garbage on the street?

(Answer 1)

To be honest with you, I don’t do anything because, in the first place, it’s not my trash. Well in our city, the local government has regular cleaners to maintain the cleanliness of our beloved city. Actually, it’s near to impossible to see some garbage on the street of our city since people abide by the city regulations, if not, they will be penalized by paying a huge fine.

(Answer 2)

Well as I’m an advocate of protecting the environment, I do pick up the garbage on the street and put them in the trash bins. I often do that because I want to be a role model to the youth. I want to set myself as a good example to them that we the citizens of this world have an obligation to respect and protect the environment.

  Beloved [adj.] – dearly loved

Near to impossible [idiom] – almost impossible

Abide [verb] – obey; follow

Penalize [verb] – punish

Fine [noun] – an amount of money to be paid for not obeying the rule

Advocate [noun] – a person who publicly supports a particular cause or policy

Pick up [phrasal verb] – to make the place clean

R ole model [noun] – a person who is looked to by other people as an example

Obligation [noun] – responsibility

i.) FIRST ANSWER: The speaker gave a straightforward negative answer then in order for him to expound on his answer, he transitioned to talking about how clean his city was and what the government did in his city. In this case, he’s able to stretch his answer, and that made him provide a brief answer.

ii.) SECOND ANSWER: Here the speaker gave a very personal note. He talked about his drive to help conserve the environment and how he could impact other people, especially the youth. His answer here is very well-thought and organized.

How do you feel when you see people throw garbage on the street?

I do feel upset and miffed. There was a time when I needed to call out someone for throwing his trash on the street. To his surprise, he just picked his trash up and walked away. I believe he was so embarrassed.

Upset [adj.] – to be disturbed; unhappy

Miffed [adj.] – annoyed

Call out – criticize someone about something they have said or done

Walk away [phrasal verb] – to leave a place, situation, or a person

i.) Here the speaker used some good descriptive words to answer the question about feelings. In order for him to make his answer a bit longer, he talked about one instance when he needed to call the attention of one person who disrespected the environment. Because of that, the length of his answer became exact – neither short nor long.

Do you help in keeping the streets tidy?

Well, I don’t do anything except that I throw my garbage properly. Fortunately, the streets in our city are totally clean. You can never ever see any litter. Thanks to our government’s tremendous effort, people become educated about the importance of cleanliness.

Yes, I do and I volunteer in a cleanup drive that is spearheaded by our town’s government officials every weekend. In our country, government leaders and officials are encouraging us citizens to take part in the government’s cleanup campaign. And I’m so inspired and happy that this campaign gets a positive response.

  Litter [noun] – trash; rubbish

Thanks to [phrase] – as a result to; due to

Tremendous [adj.] – very great; huge

Volunteer [noun] – a person who offers his service to do something; [verb] – freely offers to do something

Cleanup [noun] – an act to clean a place

Spearhead [verb] – lead

i.) FIRST ANSWER: The speaker started his answer by giving a negative answer and used the sentence construction ‘except that…’ So basically his answer was not totally negative as he did something for the community to be clean. Then he shifted to talking about how clean their city was and how the government played an essential role in maintaining the cleanliness of their city.

ii.) SECOND ANSWER: The speaker gave a positive response to the question and then talked about his eagerness to clean. To add details to his answer,  he talked about the government’s campaign about cleaning and how people responded to the campaign.

Do you think your city is clean or not?

Well like I’ve just said, our city is absolutely clean, we the people in this city are law-abiding citizens. We follow the city regulations about cleanliness and we give importance to conserving Mother Earth. I’m more than happy that our efforts have come to fruition.

It’s such a shame to say no and I blame this on the city government because they don’t make any huge effort to clean our city. Of course, cleanliness starts at home but the lack of political power of our city officials can be the main reason as well why our city is really dirty. I’m sure that when there is a strong implementation of regulations about cleanliness for sure people follow.

Conserve [verb] – protect from destruction

Come to fruition [idiom] – to successfully realize

It’s such a shame [expression] – to say that something is unfortunate

Blame [verb] – to hold accountable

i.) FIRST ANSWER: The speaker just reiterated what he said about his city. Then talked about how they followed the regulations in his city and ended his answer by talking about his feelings.

ii.) SECOND ANSWER: The speaker expressed his disappointment about how dirty his city was and how his government failed to address the problem. He pointed out the root cause of the problem and explained it thoroughly. He sounded very natural in his first line by using a very good expression.

Nowadays in many countries household waste e.g. food packaging is increasing day by day. What are the causes for that? How can this problem be solved?

Cause/Solution essay

Introduction

Introducing the topic, citing examples of commonly occurring waste products of our use, and how this essay will explore reasons and mention possible solutions for the same.

Paragraph 1 – A few reasons about how and why household waste has increased in various countries. Examples like aluminium and plastic containers gaining prominence in a takeaway food culture shows how wastage occurs in a household.

Paragraph 2 – Certain solutions to this issue, like adopting biodegradable or recyclable food containers, recycling instead of dumping waste and generating awareness towards a greener and sustainable lifestyle mentioned.

Restate your views.

The world is consuming goods and services at an unprecedented rate, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, a household had produced great amounts of wastage, like aluminium tin-foil containers, plastic containers, use-and-throw gloves and masks, etc. This essay will explore the reasons for this and mention some possible solutions.

To embark on the topic, there are a few reasons why this issue has become a global concern. Nowadays, people tend to buy new things instead of reusing old ones. We consume more and more, thereby producing more wastage, be it the plastic bags that we use to carry foods and other things or the containers that we use to store food regularly. “Ordering in” has become a new normal as time constraints and convenience stand in the way of a home-cooked meal, and what remains, in the end, is satisfaction for the self and plastic throwaways for the earth.

Solutions do exist to this problem. First and foremost, restaurants should adopt a green approach towards food delivery, i.e., the food containers should either be recyclable or biodegradable. Recently, in Germany, a company started selling leaf-based containers, a product popular in the street food scenario of India. More countries should embrace this biodegradable product. Secondly, the dumping of waste into rivers, seas and oceans, and landfills should be avoided, and instead, they should be recycled. But the most important thing remains in the hands of normal people, for no solution will work without conscious use and awareness. So, everyone should switch to a sustainable lifestyle, something that will definitely ease the strain put on the planet.

In conclusion, the waste crisis is already impending predicaments on us, but we, both individuals and species, possess the intellect and will to fight through it.

Meaning: products that are intended to be discarded after being used once or a few times. Example – It reminds me of the time when we had throwaway cameras.

Meaning: accept Example – He embraced the idea of change in his life.

  • Sustainable

Meaning: conserving an ecological balance by avoiding depletion of natural resources. Example – Many countries are committing to sustainable development.

  • Predicament

The given graph presents data on the various waste handling methods implemented in Toronto, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur, and Amman.

Overall, it could be seen that each urban area has a different preference for waste treatment. Meanwhile, in all of these cities, incineration and landfill are the two most important and widely used garbage disposal solutions.

As shown in the graph, Toronto is responsible for landfilling more than two-thirds of the waste. On the contrary, Amman disposes of about half of its waste using this manner. The similar method is employed to get rid of 15% and 29% of waste in Kuala Lumpur and Madrid, respectively. In terms of incinerating waste, Kuala Lumpur treats more than half of its waste utilising approach, which is the other prominent one. Furthermore, this technique simultaneously contributes to the elimination of 40% and 38% of the rubbish in Madrid and Amman.

In Madrid and Kuala Lumpur, approximately a quarter of the garbage is disposed of through waste recycling. This technique is only applied to less than a tenth of the total trash in Amman and Toronto. Compositing, which accounts for just 2–8% of the total garbage generated across all cities, is the least popular option for waste removal.

Mastering IELTS Writing Task 2: How Social Media Affects Body Image – Sample Essays and Expert Analysis

Social media’s impact on body image is a highly relevant topic in today’s digital age, making it a popular subject for IELTS Writing Task 2 essays. Based on recent trends and the frequency of appearance in past exams, we can expect this theme to continue being a significant part of future IELTS tests. Let’s explore a sample question and provide comprehensive essay examples to help you prepare effectively for this topic.

Analyzing the Question

Let’s examine a typical IELTS Writing Task 2 question on this topic:

Some people believe that social media has a negative impact on people’s body image and self-esteem. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

This question requires you to:

  • Understand the concept of body image and self-esteem
  • Evaluate the influence of social media on these aspects
  • Present your opinion on whether this influence is negative
  • Support your viewpoint with relevant examples and explanations

Sample Essay 1 (Band 8-9)

In the digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, significantly influencing various aspects of our personal and social experiences. I strongly agree with the statement that social media negatively impacts people’s body image and self-esteem, as it often presents unrealistic standards of beauty and promotes constant comparison.

Firstly, social media platforms are flooded with carefully curated and often edited images that present an idealized version of beauty. Celebrities, influencers, and even ordinary users frequently use filters and photo-editing tools to enhance their appearance, creating an unrealistic standard that many find impossible to achieve. This constant exposure to seemingly perfect bodies and faces can lead to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction with one’s own appearance. For instance, a study by the Royal Society for Public Health found that Instagram, a popular image-sharing platform, was rated as the worst social media app for young people’s mental health and body image.

Moreover, the very nature of social media encourages constant comparison. Users are continuously exposed to the highlight reels of others’ lives, including their physical appearance. This incessant comparison can lead to a negative self-perception and lowered self-esteem. A research conducted by the University of Pennsylvania demonstrated that reducing social media usage led to significant reductions in loneliness and depression, suggesting a direct link between social media exposure and mental well-being.

However, it’s important to note that social media is not inherently negative. Some platforms and communities promote body positivity and self-acceptance. Nevertheless, these positive influences are often overshadowed by the predominant culture of perfectionism and comparison.

In conclusion, while social media has its benefits, its negative impact on body image and self-esteem is significant and concerning. To mitigate these effects, it’s crucial for individuals to develop a critical approach to the content they consume online and for social media companies to take responsibility in promoting more realistic and diverse representations of beauty.

Sample Essay 2 (Band 6-7)

In today’s world, social media is very popular and many people think it has a bad effect on how we see our bodies and feel about ourselves. I agree that social media can have negative impacts on body image and self-esteem.

One reason why social media can be bad for body image is because it shows many perfect-looking pictures. People often post photos where they look their best, and sometimes these photos are even edited to look better. This can make others feel like they are not good enough when they compare themselves to these images. For example, many young girls might feel bad about their own bodies when they see models or celebrities on Instagram looking very thin and beautiful.

Another problem is that social media makes people always compare themselves to others. When we scroll through social media, we see many photos of other people and it’s easy to start thinking that everyone else looks better or has a better life. This constant comparison can make people feel worse about themselves and lower their self-esteem.

However, it’s also true that some parts of social media can be positive. There are some accounts and groups that try to show different body types and encourage people to love themselves. But these good messages are often not as common as the negative ones.

In conclusion, I think social media does have a mostly negative effect on body image and self-esteem. It’s important for people to be careful about what they look at online and remember that not everything they see is real. Social media companies should also try to show more realistic and diverse images of people.
