The previous step puts 0 for values where you don’t really need them, so you should hide them to make the bill more professional. Here’s how you can do that:

  • Go to File, then  Options .

6. Add Other Bills and Get the Total Bill

  • Add the Subtotal, Taxes, Others and Total cells below the Line Total of your hotel bill format.

I sat on a stool at the Shepheard Bar and digested what Regional Security Officer Childress had told me about the Soviets radiating our embassy in Moscow with microwave energy. While Childress went to the restroom I came to the conclusion that the only reason why he would bring this up was to recruit me on the SY technical team.

“Another beer?” Childress said as he hopped on the stool next to me.

The bartender knew the RSO’s subtle signal to order.

“Where were we?” Childress said.

“I think the Soviets were in the process of sterilizing the U.S. Embassy Moscow staff with microwave radiation.”

He gave me a double take and said, “Good one,” with the makings of a smile.

“Just kidding,” I said when he added a questioning gaze. “That amount of radiation probably… I mean… it wouldn’t cause damage to the precious… to the vital organs. You said the congressional study indicated no risk.”

I was beginning to sound like Brig. General Jack Ripper in Dr. Strangelove. That role, of course, had to belong to RSO Childress. I got back on course with, “So you were saying that SY tech support found an antenna in a U.S. Embassy chimney and the tunnel beneath it that led to another building.”

The bartender slid two more Stella draught beers in front of us. Childress used the pause to take a swig and gather his thoughts.

“First the Soviets hit us with TUMS, then SMUT-1 and SMUT-2. Now a mysterious fire. It’s time to take definitive action.”

It sounded funny, but I knew it was no laughing matter. I had already gone out to the edge with my “sterilization” comment.

Childress rotated his head, lifted his shoulders and took in a heavy breath of the Shepherd Bar air before he continued.

The Am Embassy Moscow Fire

“In August of last year, a mysterious fire broke out at the embassy in Moscow. The fire engulfed the entire ECON section on the eighth floor. It soon spread to the ninth and tenth floors and the attic. Although policy dictated otherwise, the ambassador gave permission to the Soviet fire fighters to enter the eighth floor.”

Childress paused to get my take.

“No shit?” I said.

“Later Soviet firemen were allowed to fight the fire from aerial ladders when it broke through the chancery’s roof. Although the ambassador denied the Soviets access to the tenth floor, four unescorted Soviet firemen entered the classified area—the Communications and Records Office—of the ninth floor through a window.”

Childress shook his head. “We’ve got to do better at controlling these situations.”

I didn’t have anything add to that.

The Soviets backed off when they saw a Defense Attaché́ officer aiming a camera at them. The embassy chancery offices and the roof suffered extensive damage. Fortunately, the RSO concluded that sensitive equipment and records had not been compromised.”

I had to cut to the chase. The Marine Guard TGIF party had already begun an hour ago. “Is this related to the antenna in the chimney at the American embassy there?”

Childress turned to me and with a bold expression said, “Most assuredly. That’s all I can say at the moment.” While continuing to gaze at me he added, “I guess you’re wondering why I’m telling you all of this.”

“It crossed my mind.”

“I must remind you that this is all confidential.”

“Understood.”

I followed his lead and quaffed a few ounces out of the flagon of Stella beer.

A Recruiter’s “Pitch”

“I’ve been impressed by your work here.”

Here we go. “Thanks.”

“You’ve probably figured out that we may need some help in Moscow on the technical side identifying these microwave radiation issues. As I mentioned earlier I’ll be heading to Moscow after I return from home leave. We anticipate the assignment duration will be about three months. In the meantime SY is putting together a team.”

Childress paused to let that sink in.

“Think you might be interested in joining the team?”

What about my radio cohort Al back at the RCO office in Karachi? He depended on me to handle all the fieldwork. Three months? I bet it would be more like six months. Or it could be an indeterminate time period. OC/PE-R could reassign me Moscow for two years.

“Why don’t you return to Karachi and talk to RCO Roberson about it? It would be for the good of the Foreign Service you know.”

I said, “I appreciate your offer, but I’m going to have to respectfully decline.”

His expression told me that Childress didn’t take too kindly that I had not even considered his offer.

To further explain my response I said, “I’m new in the Foreign Service. This is my first assignment overseas. If I had a few years experience under my belt I’d probably say, ‘Sure, I’ll take up your offer.’”

His expression changed from put off to disappointed.

“We’re responsible for over sixty missions out of the RCO radio office in Karachi. There’s only two of us. I’ve got a lot of people over here counting on me. This area has been neglected for quite a while. Can I make a suggestion?”

“Sure, go ahead,” he said in a discouraged tone.

“Senior CEO Norm Bates helped you guys out in South America. I suggest you contact him. He’s about the best we’ve got and he’s currently back at SECSTATE.”

“We’ve already contacted him. He’s got health issues.”

“Oh, sorry to hear it.”

Would Norm’s gout hold him back?

“You know, there’s some sharp radio techs back at the department awaiting assignments…”

“What is it?” Childress said.

Zoom Zoom, our super-sleuth radio tech would be the perfect guy for the job.

“CEO Parker is a recent hire back at OC/R. I think he would be a good fit for the Moscow assignment.”

Childress chugged the remainder of the beer, glanced at his watch, and said, “We’ll consider CEO Parker. In the meantime, if you reconsider send me a message.”

He gaged my expression and said, “I’m sure they’ll be numerous perks upon completion of the assignment.”

I didn’t ask about the perks.

RSO Childress tapped the bar top and said,  “I’ve got to go pack. The wife’s got big plans for me back home.”

“Have a good trip,” I said. “Sorry I wasn’t able to help you out.”

He gave me an expression that hinted that he wasn’t so sure about that, which made me nervous.

RSO Childress paid the bill, rose off the stool, and said, “See ya around.”

“Yeah, the Cairo upgrades will take a few days to complete. I’ll message you and Bob [my boss in Karachi, RCO Robert Roberson] when I finish.”

“Keep up the good work.”

“Thanks, I will.”

I hoped that was the last I ever heard of TUMS and SMUT and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.

September 28, 1942 Dear Folks, Well, I'm now with CBS and waiting to do my first broadcast which should come off some time next week. The trip to Russia is all set and I should be ready to leave sometime "before Xmas." I think I'll be traveling by the northern route by way of Murmansk although this is uncertain. The trip to Moscow should not be very dangerous now with winter coming on so there really is nothing to worry about. As I get it I'll be broadcasting about five times a week. On the whole the job looks pretty good. It's surprising to be out from under the pressure of agency work. You don't have all the deadlines to meet. You actually only work a few minutes a day although it might take a full sixteen hours to gather the material for a broadcast. I have a lot to learn about technique—and hope to get that lined out before I get to Moscow. I also start some Russian lessons here in London next week. It seems a hopeless language to try to learn but they tell me it's really not as difficult as it appears at first. All in all I'm pretty thrilled about the whole thing. My salary will be deposited in New York for me until I return. I'm buying heavy underwear, fur coats and gloves like mad. CBS pays for all the special kit I need and I'm picking up plenty of it. How I'm going to carry everything I need I don't know—but I'll manage somehow, I guess. The boys in Moscow already are cabling me to bring them such things as extra pipes, socks and neckties. Larry LeSueur, who I'm replacing out there, said he's leaving me a well-trained secretary—whatever that means. I'll probably stay at the Hotel Metropol where all the other correspondents stay. It's not going to be comfortable but it sure should be interesting. I'm already trying to line up some British newspapers so that I can pick up some extra dough by writing articles for them. I also am negotiating with Newsweek magazine to do a weekly piece for them. I'm lining up an agent in New York to handle whatever articles I can write from there. All in all the assignment is shaping into something big and I am determined to make a success of it. I'm sure busy and haven't had much time to write. In fact, I'm squeezing this letter in between appointments so I will have to keep it short. Meanwhile drop me a line and give everyone my regards. But I have now been aboard ship for almost three weeks and we're still going strong. It has been a pleasant trip so far with very little rough weather and now that we are getting into the tropics, I am picking up a sunburn that should look very funny if and when I get to Moscow. However, with the developments in North Africa, God knows where the company will send me. There is some possibility that I will be diverted to the North African theater of war—however I still want to get to Russia. In many ways this has been a funny trip. There are over 200 passengers, all of them going on some kind of governmental and military missions. Consequentially everyone walks around with that knowing air of secrecy common to minor government officials and everyone gossips and guesses about everyone else. Our ship is an old one that should have been retired to the scrap heap shortly after the last war. However she is not too uncomfortable although the accommodations are a little on the Chic Sale side. I am traveling first class which means that I share a cabin with four other fellows—a British journalist, a Free French sailor and a photographic expert. We have gotten along fine so far with only occasional outbursts of "cabin fever." But the biggest shortage is women. There are about a dozen women aboard of which only about four are worth consideration. You can imagine the time they are having with the extremely large plurality of men. However the boat is so crowded that immorality is next to impossible—but there have been several demonstrations that where there is a will there sure is a way. The liquor aboard is extremely cheap and extremely good. For example, first class French champagne (impossible to get in London) sells here for about $2.50. And there are still some Rhenish and Moselle wines left such as Liebfraumilch and still some German Hock. The funniest thing about the whole trip, however, is the way you have to line up for everything. You line up for food, for baths, for drink and it is a grand sight in the morning to see an Earl standing in his place behind a dock-worker waiting for a seat on the toilet. There is something grandiloquent and almost Episcopal about the slow moving of the bowels in the post-breakfast ceremony on the ship's only bathroom. But the worst thing about the whole trip is the feeling of being completely isolated and cut off from the world. The day we left port the Americans marched into North Africa. I knew something like that was coming off but I didn't expect it so soon. At first the news was easy to pick up and the ship's radio gave us regular news broadcasts which everyone crowded around to hear. However news reception was not always so good and there have been periods of two full days when we have had no hint of what is going on. That's enough to drive a newspaperman nuts. But the trip has been a grand rest. I have picked up a few pounds in weight and have been sleeping 10 hours a day. I hope to be in Moscow for Christmas but it is very uncertain. If I make good plane connections and the Russians don't get too mixed up in protocol and red tape about letting me pass right into their country, I should just about make it. I am asking the CBS headquarters in New York to relay news of my movements through KMBC. Or else they will do it direct by telegram. You might get in touch with the manager of KMBC whoever he is—I understand Claude Dorsey is still with them—and make some kind of arrangements with him about the time of my broadcasts etc. I also have a proposition with Newsweek magazine when I get to Russia and you might keep an eye on that sheet for some of my stuff if I can get any printable stuff out. You have to remember that censorship is very stiff in the USSR. This is about all for the present. I'll drop you another line from Cairo or Teheran and let you know what I've seen and where I've been. Although we've had boat drills every day there has been no occasion for any alarm. About the only thing we've seen was a whale. We should see some sharks soon which is definitely not a pleasant thought in case we have to take a sudden swim. You can expect to hear from me shortly. Jones’s remarks about FDA’s priorities for dietary supplement oversight will come just days after the agency’s official reorganization of the Human Foods Program and the creation of a new “super-office” that includes dietary supplement regulation.

“Navigating the News Cycle – Making Sense of the Headlines” will feature political analyst Chris Cillizza, former CNN Politics reporter and editor-at-large. Cillizza will share insights on the constantly evolving state of politics and its impact on cultural and business landscapes. With less than a month before the presidential election, he will examine the national climate and international events that are driving voter decision making.

“DSHEA—what’s working, what’s not, and how to fix it,” will be the final session on Friday, Oct. 11, featuring Cara Welch, PhD, director of FDA’s Office of Dietary Supplement Programs, along with industry representatives, to discuss potential legislative changes and regulatory enhancements to the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), the industry’s foundational law, 30 years after its passage.

“CRN’s CONVERGENCE presents a unique opportunity   for dietary supplement professionals to come together as a community to learn and discuss exciting cutting-edge technologies shaping our future, alongside real talk about the critical regulatory challenges we face,” said CRN President & CEO Steve Mister. “Open to CRN members, as well as non-members, CONVERGENCE will inspire reflection on the supplement industry’s growth propelled by DSHEA and what’s needed for the future to assure the continued advancement of our industry, which is so essential to consumers’ health and wellness.”
