In the latest episode of the Stanford Legal Podcast, Stanford Law School Professor Jeffrey Fisher and Assistant Professor Easha Anand, co-directors of the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, join Pam Karlan to discuss the Supreme Court’s last term and the blockbuster rulings with far-reaching ... implications for American democracy and law. The Supreme Court’s latest term was marked by decisions of enormous consequence. However, the way the Court has communicated about these rulings far undersells the gravity they carry. While “expressing itself in extremely modest terms,” Professor Jeffrey Fisher says, the current Supreme Court has “[handed] down decisions that have enormously consequential effects for our democracy, people’s rights, and everything in between.” He and Assistant Professor Easha Anand, co-directors of the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic, agree that these recent decisions could reshape American law and politics for years to come. The Federal Trade Commission’s ban on noncompete agreements is now in question after a federal judge upheld a challenge to the rule on August 20, blocking it from taking effect in September as scheduled. Here, Stanford Law Professor Mark Lemley discusses the FTC’s ban, the impact of non-compete ... agreements on American workers and the economy, and the next steps for the FTC to attempt to reinstate the rule in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Loper decision that reduced the power of federal agencies. "More than 20 percent of all US workers are not allowed to leave their jobs and work in the same field due to noncompete agreements" said Professor Lemley. "Preventing people from taking better jobs reduces employee mobility. That, in turn, reduces wages. It also reduces innovation, because people with a good idea can’t start a new company to turn it into reality." Read more here:

Stanford Law School Professor William Gould co-taught one of the first Sports Law courses alongside his colleague and friend, Alvin Attles, Jr. The Golden State Warriors great and SLS Lecturer has recently passed, and Gould reflects on their time teaching together and the friendship that formed as ... a result. "We not only discussed matters like sports rules, draft systems, and tradition, we also had a lot of fun together in those days," said Professor Gould. "The staff (particularly the IT guys) and students often observed and heard our conversations as we walked through the hallways together." Read more here:

When former public defender Carlie Ware Horne joined SLS's Criminal Defense Clinic last year, she saw an opportunity to leverage the resources of the law school and the greater university to create a three-day training program for California public defenders. Recently held over three days at ... SLS, the inaugural Stanford Trial Advocacy & New Defender Uplift Program (STANDUP) brought more than 50 of the state's PDs to campus for workshops and plenary sessions covering all aspects of trial practice. Sprinkled throughout the program were opportunities for the participants to engage with Professor Ronald Tyler on less-discussed aspects of public defense: self-care and stress management. https://stanford.io/4dCuQbK

Disseminating Recommended Practice: Early Childhood Education Institute researchers share strategies for involving families

August 26, 2024

BATON ROUGE, LA - Early Childhood Education Institute (ECEI) Researchers , Michelle Brunson, PhD and Cynthia DiCarlo , PhD , along with their colleagues Ashely Boudreaux , Debra Jo Hailey , and Katrina Jordan , recently shared strategies for involving families in early childhood education in their article, “ Engaging Parents as Partners Using Traditional and Distance Learning Models ” in the practitioner publication ChildCare Exchange .

ChildCare Exchange is read by thousands of early childhood professionals worldwide. Our readership includes faculty and professors, students, trainers, center directors, family childcare providers, classroom teachers, and early childhood organizations that support our field. ChildCare Exchange is committed to fostering an inclusive community by elevating story and conversation throughout early care and education. ChildCare Exchange has nearly 6,000 members, strategic partner organizations , and libraries that share Exchange articles with their networks!

Part of the mission of the ECEI is to disseminate research-based practices; publishing in practitioner journals gets research-based information in the hands of teachers. Stressing the importance of home-school relationships, this article shares practical research-based strategies with teachers just in time for the start of the school year.

The Early Childhood Education Institute at LSU is focused holistically on the early years and fills a unique niche by targeting early care, specifically birth through age three. Holistic development invites collaboration from other disciplines to study recommended practices for young children. The ECE Institute at LSU aims to make LSU a leader in early care and education research, dissemination, and advocacy of recommended practices. Through a balanced emphasis on research and education programs, recommended practices in educating and caring for young children will be created, applied, evaluated, and disseminated. We focus on developing expert early care practitioners who deliver high-quality early childhood programming, engage in research practices, and advocate for the profession.

Visit the Early Childhood Education Institute website.

Top 5 universities in the UK

5.  university of edinburgh.

Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is the sixth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Britain and Ireland’s seven ancient universities.

It is made up of three colleges: arts, humanities and social sciences; science and engineering; and medicine and veterinary medicine. Within these colleges are 20 academic schools.

A range of student clubs and societies is on offer, including a music society, a theatre society and a variety of sports teams including football, rowing, judo and rugby.

The student newspaper, The Student , is one of the oldest student newspapers in the UK. It was founded by the author Robert Louis Stevenson.

UCL’s main campus is in the central London area of Bloomsbury. Nearly half of all UCL students are from outside the UK, with significantly more from Asia than from continental Europe.

UCL was the first university in England to admit students irrespective of class, race or religion, and the first to admit women on equal terms with men, following the educational philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, the university’s “spiritual founder”.

For admission, undergraduate students are required to have achieved top grades in their high school exams. The most competitive degree is the BSc in philosophy, politics and economics, which receives 30 applicants for every place.

Famous alumni include Mahatma Gandhi; Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone; and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who met the other members of his band at the university.

3. Imperial College London

Imperial’s main campus is near Kensington Palace in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, with other campuses around the city. The student cohort is extremely international and is made up of more than 125 nationalities.

Imperial College London is consistently ranked among the best universities in the world for science, technology, engineering, medicine and business.

It was formed in 1907 from a merger of three colleges in London and now has 17,000 students and 8,000 staff.

In addition to top scientists, Fields medallists and Nobel prizewinners, Imperial also produces influential government advisers and policymakers. Many graduates go on to achieve breakthrough innovations in industry and business, and are highly sought after by blue-chip companies and start-ups.

The author H. G. Wells and Sir Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin, are among Imperial’s famous alumni.

Ten things every international student in London should know

2. University of Cambridge

In total, 117 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Cambridge , and Cambridge-linked mathematicians have won 11 Fields medals. Notable alumni include actors, athletes, politicians, royals and cultural figures, including biologist Charles Darwin, broadcaster David Attenborough, conservationist Jane Goodall and actress Olivia Colman.

Like Oxford, the University of Cambridge is fundamentally collegiate and is also one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities. The town is just an hour from London.

The university is home to more than 19,000 students and 9,000 staff. There are 31 colleges, some of which date back to the 13th century, and more than 100 academic departments.

Cambridge is particularly renowned for excellence in mathematics and has educated some of the most famous British scientists.

Undergraduates are taught via lectures and supervisions – intimate tutorials with only a couple of other students at most. The workload is heavy but terms are shorter than at many other UK universities.

Cambridge libraries are home to extensive collections of medieval manuscripts, and the university museums display collections of archaeological artefacts and zoological specimens.

Oxbridge and the Ivy League: tips for applications

1. University of Oxford

More than 30 world leaders, 27 British prime ministers, 50 Nobelists and 120 Olympic medallists were educated at Oxford. Stephen Hawking, Hugh Grant and Indira Gandhi are some of its famous graduates.

Undergraduates and postgraduates belong to one of its 44 colleges and often live in the college building or college-owned accommodation.

One of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, the University of Oxford attracts top scholars and students. Entry standards are high and admission is competitive; on average, the institution receives five applications for each available place.

Social life and recreational activities – such as rowing, cultural events and societies – also revolve around the college. Undergraduates are taught almost exclusively by tutors in their college, while postgraduate students are primarily served academically by a centralised faculty.

There are more than 100 libraries at Oxford, the most famous of which is the Bodleian, built in 1602. The city also has a number of museums, including the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, which houses the remains of a dodo, and the Museum of the History of Science, which displays a blackboard used by Albert Einstein.

USDA Expands Shellfish Insurance Program

  Back to News Releases

RMA Allows Insurance on Seeds Initially Purchased Smaller than 4 mm

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expanding the Shellfish insurance program beginning with the 2025 crop year. USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) is expanding coverage to an additional 27 counties in Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Additionally, RMA is modifying the program to allow insurance on seeds initially purchased smaller than 4 mm once they reach the minimum insurable size of 4 mm, allowing producers to use existing records for coverage in adjacent program counties, and allowing alternative yield procedures. RMA worked with stakeholders on these program enhancements.

“In the shellfish program’s first year as a pilot, the Risk Management Agency listened to shellfish producers to understand what is and isn’t working,” said RMA Administrator Marcia Bunger. “I’m excited to see so many producer-focused changes addressing the challenges they shared because those changes are going to improve the program in its second year.”

The Shellfish insurance program is an actual production history-price component (APH-PC) coverage policy for container-grown oysters commercially cultivated for the fresh half shell market. RMA first implemented the program for the 2024 crop year in select counties in Alabama, California, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia.

This Shellfish APH-PC coverage policy insures producers against yield losses due to hurricane, nor’easters, excessive heat during a low tide event, freeze during a low tide event, and low salinity due to excessive rainfall.

Producers select a percentage of their average yield to insure, from 50 to 75%. The producer also selects a percentage of the crop price to insure, between 55 and 100% of the crop price, as established annually by RMA. If producers purchase additional levels of coverage, with prior sales records, they may also increase their price guarantee up to 125% of RMA’s established price. The program uses county loss triggers combined with producers’ sales records to confirm a loss has occurred. The insurance guarantee is based on the number of oysters expected to be harvested between January 1 and December 31.

The sales closing date for the 2025 crop year is Nov. 30, 2024.

RMA also offers crop insurance for certain aquaculture categories through crop insurance programs for Group Risk Plan oysters available in select parishes in Louisiana, cultivated clams available in select counties in Massachusetts, South Carolina, and Virginia, and the nationally available Whole Farm Revenue Protection (WFRP) plan of insurance. WFRP provides a risk management safety net for all commodities in an operation under one insurance policy. View the  Aquaculture Fact Sheet to learn more.

More Information

Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the  RMA Agent Locator . Producers can learn more about crop insurance and the modern farm safety net at  rma.usda.gov or by contacting their  RMA Regional Office .

RMA secures the future of agriculture by providing world class risk management tools to rural America through Federal crop insurance and risk management education programs. RMA provides policies for more than 130 crops and is constantly working to adjust and create new policies based on producer needs and feedback.

USDA touches the lives of all Americans each day in so many positive ways. Under the Biden-Harris administration, USDA is transforming America’s food system with a greater focus on more resilient local and regional food production, fairer markets for all producers, ensuring access to safe, healthy and nutritious food in all communities, building new markets and streams of income for farmers and producers using climate smart food and forestry practices, making historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy capabilities in rural America, and committing to equity across the Department by removing systemic barriers and building a workforce more representative of America. What our instructors have to say

"I try to make the courses real for the students. It has to be real for them to care. We can talk about globalization in the abstract all day long, but I like to talk to them about how it really is affecting their lives – for example, outsourcing to India – to appreciate what we are covering. If we just took out a textbook and there is no real connection to daily life, it has no impact and doesn't matter."

Dr. Steven Shirley, instructor

At Southern New Hampshire University, you'll have access to a powerful network of more than 400,000 students, alumni and staff that can help support you long after graduation. Our instructors offer relevant, real-world expertise to help you understand and navigate the field. Plus, with our growing, nationwide alumni network, you'll have the potential to tap into a number of internship and career opportunities.

How we estimate your tuition cost:

We look at the cost per credit multiplied by the number of credits you need to earn for a bachelor's degree. Most bachelor's degrees require 120 credits. SNHU allows you to transfer in up to 90 credits, requiring a minimum of 30 credits to be taken at SNHU. This is only a tuition estimator, and doesn't account for other fees that may be associated with your program of choice.

Ways to save on online tuition

Transfer up to 90 credits toward your bachelor's degree program at SNHU. If you’ve taken one course or many, we’ll evaluate them for you.

Fill out the FAFSA to see if you’re eligible for grants or work-study. (You could also be offered loans, though you’ll have to pay those back later.)

Earn credits in leadership, technology and more – while taking advantage of a 30% online undergraduate tuition discount for active-duty service members and spouses.

Getting free money for college – from SNHU or an outside organization – could help you save hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Bring in credits from popular options like CLEP, Sophia Learning, Google and other common credit for prior learning (CPL) experiences.

Receive an online tuition discount if your organization has partnered with SNHU for educational benefits. And consider asking your employer about tuition reimbursement.

John Roos ’18

I've been able to use my degree in history on a daily basis with the National Park Service, whether it's talking about the Civil War or talking about an 800-year-old ancient structure.

When I started my degree, I was not confident about what my interests were after graduation. Now, I have an idea of the careers I would like to get into. I'd like to earn a master’s degree and become an archeologist.

Frequently Asked Questions Find out more about an online history degree

Traditionally, a 120-credit bachelor's degree in history takes a full-time student about 4 years to complete.

However, at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), that isn't always the case. Because so many students begin their program with varying amounts of transfer credits, it could take you a shorter amount of time to go from start to finish.

SNHU accepts up to 90 credits toward your bachelor's in history, meaning you could have as few as 10 courses – and as few as 5 terms – to get your degree. And with six 8-week terms per year at SNHU, reaching that goal may be sooner than you think.

A study released by Emsi (now Lightcast) in 2019 comparing career outcomes of different college degrees concluded that social science graduates – which included history graduates in this survey – go into a broad array of jobs, including sales, nonprofits, education, marketing and business analysis. These are areas where "human skills like creativity, mental flexibility, ethics, and compassion are both in high demand and are remarkably resistant to automation." 2

While some of these career paths may require more education or training beyond a bachelor's degree, the most popular roles are:

  • Education, training and library
  • Management: business, science and arts
  • Legal occupations
  • Office and administrative support
  • Business operations
  • Arts, design, entertainment, sports and media
  • Community and social services

Graduates of history programs come away with sought-after soft skills needed across the workforce, like:

  • Communication: The ability to write clearly and speak to others effectively is valuable in any situation.
  • Critical thinking: Approach, analyze and evaluate problems logically.
  • Research: Locate, assemble and analyze information to drive decisions.

Many people who earn a Bachelor of Arts in History go on to graduate school, which may open up more doors in your career.

Our career services team   is also on hand to help you connect with companies interested in hiring someone with your skill set. We partner with organizations nationwide specifically to get your foot in the door. You can work with a career advisor as soon as you become a student at Southern New Hampshire University, which can help you get ahead once you complete your degree.

If you love history, you may want to consider studying it at the university level. By immersing yourself in history, you can better understand why the world is the way it is. Develop a fuller understanding of disagreements that led to war, cultural and religious differences that have both divided and united populations, and movements that have fought for the rights of minorities, women and other underrepresented communities all over the world.

That particular insight can help you become a leader who's capable of making decisions that take all factors into consideration. When you're more aware of what's happening around you and can absorb the information in a thoughtful manner, you become a creative problem solver that others can rely on.

Glassdoor lists some of the most common entry-level jobs for history majors as: 3

  • Assistant curator
  • Assistant prospect researcher
  • Entry-level grant writer
  • Fund development assistant
  • History teacher
  • Social media marketing coordinator

While some of these positions, such as history teacher, may require additional education or training, earning your history degree at Southern New Hampshire University gives you the opportunity to develop a strong set of diverse skills, valuable across all industries.

History is important because it helps us better understand what it means to be human. History is the biography of the world: It informs us about decisions that have been made, and it helps us have a better idea about what's to come.

Online courses can be extremely beneficial for a busy student. They can often be more cost-effective than traditional campus classes. Plus, they offer flexibility, allowing you to complete them at a pace that works for your schedule.

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) has been offering courses online for more than 25 years, which means we offer the kind of high-quality learning experiences and support you need to succeed. SNHU’s online programs, like the BA in History degree, use a platform with 24/7 login access and no live lectures, so you have the ability to decide for yourself when it's ideal to learn the material. Online students are also provided with a dedicated academic advisor as their main point of contact from start to finish. This way, you can rest assured that you can be a student online without ever feeling alone.

Despite the history degree being taught online, there are still plenty of chances for real-world, hands-on experience through internships and experiential learning opportunities.

"My breakthrough moment was when SNHU Career Services told me to go for an internship,” says graduate John Roos ’18 . “Within about 2 weeks, I was volunteering and getting ready to give tours."

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes a historian’s role as research, analysis, interpretation and writing about the past by studying historical documents and sources. Although most historian positions require a master’s degree, candidates with a bachelor’s degree may qualify for some entry-level positions. 1

Additionally, historians typically do the following:

  • Gather historical data from various sources, including archives, books and artifacts
  • Analyze and interpret historical information to determine its authenticity and significance
  • Trace historical developments in a particular field
  • Engage with the public through educational programs and presentations
  • Archive or preserve materials and artifacts in museums, visitor centers and historic sites
  • Provide advice or guidance on historical topics and preservation issues
  • Write reports, articles and books on findings and theories

Some of the typical work environments for historians are museums, archives, historical societies and research organizations. Some act as consultants for these organizations while being employed by consulting firms, and some work as independent consultants. 1

Again, it's important to note that most historian roles require advanced education beyond a bachelor's degree. Southern New Hampshire University offers a Master of Arts in History for those interested in advancing their careers to this level.

What Is History?

History is the study of all that humans have done on Earth. This academic discipline attempts to explain the past using verifiable evidence, viewing prominent events and personalities from other eras through a modern lens. Taken together, different historical accounts offer a view of the world that is complicated, incomplete and even contradictory. History is a never-ending project undertaken around the world with discipline and rigor.

History Professionals

Historians use various research tools and techniques to investigate people, places and events, crafting narratives that inform the public and adding to an ever-growing historical record. They use primary sources like diaries, artifacts and statistical data to get as close to their subject matter as possible. They read—a lot—and are also skilled communicators, able to bring the past to life through dramatic retelling of consequential events.

Historians work in many positions in diverse settings. The skills gained by history students—like critical thinking, research and analysis—are coveted by employers and useful in many careers.

History Students

By studying history, you can gain useful skills like critical thinking and argumentation. You can also build deep knowledge of an area of specialization, which can be as narrow as a single event like the Battle of Gettysburg or as broad as all of U.S. history.

History majors learn to analyze, contextualize and properly cite their sources. They study topics that interest them and are encouraged to follow their curiosity.

A master’s degree is usually required, though many history professors have a Ph.D.

History Specializations

Because historians often carve their own unique niche in the field, there are just about as many historical specializations as there are historians. Below we list some common specializations for history majors:

What happened before humans learned to read and write? That’s the focus of the prehistory specialist. Many ancient cultures did not produce written records, so the study of prehistory gives voice to many who might be otherwise forgotten. Rather than written works, prehistory specialists base their scholarship more on artifacts, like carvings and tools, and surviving oral traditions.

Political History

The study of political history concerns the development of political identities and the various forms of government, including feudal monarchies, communist enclaves and democratic republics, like the United States. This specialization may concern one political party, a country or the world at large. Specialists in political history research and write about important ideas, popular movements and great political leaders.

Military History

Military history is the study of human conflict. Subjects include logistics, military doctrine, leadership and ethics. For many years, military history focused on generals and their tactics, though the field now hones in on soldiers and their psychology. The study of military history typically examines various cultural traditions and the significant impact technological advancement has had on warfare.

Religious History

Religious history is the study of world faiths over time. This study often takes place from a secular perspective, covering prehistoric traditions and early polytheistic and monotheistic religions. Learners also study religious history from within religious institutions, as do some scholars of the Catholic Church. This specialization often involves discussion of how religion ties into culture, politics and art.

Black History

Black history is one of many social history subfields. This specialization typically covers the history of Africa and members of the African diaspora, including African Americans, who were brought to North America on the earliest voyages of European explorers and colonists. Other subfields in social history include women’s history, LGBT history and the history of the labor movement.

Professional Organizations for the History Field

American historical association (aha).

The American Historical Association is the nation’s oldest and largest professional organization in the field of history. It offers several useful resources to job seekers, including job boards, professional development literature and informational events held around the country.

Organization of American Historians (OAH)

The Organization of American Historians is the largest organization dedicated to the study of American history. Like other professional organizations, the OAH has an ethical code intended to maintain academic standards and guard against plagiarism and other unethical practices.

National Organization for History Educators (NCHE)

The National Organization for History Educators is an Ohio-based organization for history teachers. It offers a job board featuring open positions and online career development resources like résumé critiquing and career coaching.

How Accreditation Works for a History Degree Online

When pursuing an online history degree, you should always check for accreditation . Institutional accreditation provides quality assurance for your degree and ensures you’ll have access to federal financial aid .

Online history degree programs don’t typically have programmatic accreditation . In fact, the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation do not recognize any programmatic accrediting organizations in the history discipline.

As long as your bachelor’s program is offered by an accredited institution, you’re good to go!

What Courses Do You Take for an Online History Degree?

The courses you take for an online history degree can vary depending on your areas of interest.

Many bachelor’s programs in history require you to study a broad array of cultures and eras, using tools from fields like sociology, anthropology, political science, gender studies, and economics to examine the impact of and relationships between different historical events.

You’ll likely take multiple classes on U.S. history, though often you can customize your coursework to focus on a specific geographic area and/or time period.

Many schools offer a huge swath of history courses. Here are some common classes you might take for your online history degree:

  • African history
  • Civil rights era
  • Civil War and Reconstruction

Jobs You Can Get With an Online Degree in History

As of 2019, more than 1.1 million working professionals hold a history degree, according to the BLS.

A bachelor’s in history can prepare you for entry-level museum positions and teaching roles. A history degree also provides you with essential soft skills, such as communication, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. This foundation should allow you to explore many non-history-related careers.

After getting your online history degree, you may want to get a graduate degree to develop a specialization and advance your historical research and analysis skills. A master’s or doctoral degree in history could qualify you as a historian, archivist, or college professor.
