‘Highway’ movie review: Almost but not quite there

The telugu crime thriller engages, but doesn’t go beyond tried and tested tropes.

Writer, director and cinematographer K V Guhan begins the story with the lines ‘There will always be a reason why you meet people; either you need to change your life or you are the one that will change theirs’. In line with this thought, the Telugu thriller Highway , streaming on Aha, follows a handful of characters who happen to cross paths and are pulled into a journey of life and death.

Highway uses common tropes that one associates with killer-on-the-loose thrillers of Hollywood and Indian cinema and reimagines them in the context of a crime drama set on the highway connecting Visakhapatnam and Mangaluru.

Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda), a photographer from Visakhapatnam, and his friend Samudram (Sathya) take the road route to Bengaluru for a wedding photography assignment. Along the way, they meet Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan) and are entrusted with the task of making her reach Mangaluru. In the meantime, a psychopath killer identified only as ‘D’ is on the prowl for his next prey, with a task force headed by investigation officer Asha Bharath (Saiyami Kher) on his heels.

We get a fair idea of Vishnu’s loving family and in contrast, Tulasi’s situation of being detached from one parent and going in search of another, whom she has never met. The banter between Vishnu and Samudram brings in a few laughs, and appreciably the film doesn’t dwell on it more than is necessary. 

Guhan’s camera and Simon K King’s background score aptly contribute to the mood of the thriller. The modus operandi of the psychopath in picking his targets is neatly laid out. As long as the narrative unravels how the task force tries to close in on D and he hoodwinks them, it keeps up the momentum. 

From a mile away one knows who would be D’s next crucial target. Yet, the brief characters that make an appearance along the way and the incidents keep us hooked by the manner in which all of it heightens the threat to the target.

While Tulasi finds help and breathes easy in the company of Vishnu and Samudram, what follows reflects how unsafe things can get for a naive young woman who is compelled to travel alone on an unfamiliar route.

Manasa plays her part with innocence and vulnerability while Anand is convincing as the sensitive and responsible guy. Saiyami Kher enacts her brief part with conviction but this is a character that could have been fleshed out better. John Vijay goes overboard as the creepy truck driver. Making his debut in Telugu, Abhishek Banerjee is spot on as the eerie killer. Similar to Paatal Lok , he manages to send shivers down one’s spine without speaking much. 

Highway unfolds on familiar lines and delivers thrills from time to time. However, it falls short in the final portions that seem stretched and dilute the potential for a nail-biting finish. 

The film makes for a fairly engaging watch by staying true to its genre and doing away with frills. However, anyone who has watched crime dramas and thrillers involving a psychopath character is likely to have a sense of deja vu. A few innovative elements in characterisation or storytelling wouldn’t have hurt.

'118' తర్వాత దర్శకత్వం వహించిన 'WWW Movie' ఆశించిన విజయం సాధించలేదు. మరి, దర్శకుడిగా మూడో సినిమా 'హైవే' (Highway Telugu Movie) తో గుహన్ హిట్ అందుకుంటారా? లేదా? విజయ్ దేవరకొండ (Vijay Devarakonda) తమ్ముడు ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ ఎలా నటించారు? సినిమా (Highway Telugu Movie Review) ఎలా ఉంది?    కథ (Highway Story) : హైదరాబాద్ నగరంలో ఓ సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ (అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ) వరుసగా అమ్మాయిలను హత్యలు చేస్తుంటాడు. ఆ కేసును పోలీస్ ఆఫీసర్ ఆశా భరత్ (సయామీ ఖేర్) టేకప్ చేస్తారు. కిల్లర్‌ను పట్టుకోవడానికి సిటీలో చెక్‌పోస్ట్‌లు ఏర్పాటు చేస్తారు. పోలీసులను అలర్ట్ చేస్తారామె. అయినా వాళ్ళ కళ్ళు గప్పి సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ సిటీ ఎలా దాటాడు? హైవేలో అతనికి కనిపించిన తులసి (మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్) ఎవరు? ఆమె నేపథ్యం ఏమిటి? సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ చేతికి చిక్కిందని తెలిసిన వెంటనే ఆమెను కాపాడాలని ప్రయత్నాలు ప్రారంభించిన ఫోటోగ్రాఫర్ విష్ణు (ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ) ఎవరు? విష్ణు, తులసి మధ్య సంబంధం ఏమిటి? సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ చేతి నుంచి తులసిని విష్ణు కాపాడాడా? లేదా? అనేది సినిమాలో చూడాలి.    విశ్లేషణ (Highway Review) : హైవే మీద ప్రయాణం సాఫీగా, స్పీడుగా ఉంటుంది. బ్రేకులు ఎక్కువగా వాడాల్సిన అవసరం లేకుండా సాగుతుంది. మాంచి థ్రిల్లర్ సినిమాలూ అంతే! 'హైవే' పేరుతో థ్రిల్లర్ వస్తుందంటే సాధారణంగా ఎవరైనా రేసీగా సాగిపోయే సినిమా ఆశిస్తారు. అందుకు విరుద్ధంగా సాగుతుందీ 'హైవే'.

'హైవే'లో థ్రిల్స్ కంటే డ్రామా ఎక్కువైంది. అందువల్ల, ఎటువంటి ఉత్కంఠ లేకుండా చప్పగా సినిమా సాగింది. కథలో గానీ, కథనంలో గానీ నవ్యత లేదు. ప్రేమకథ హృదయాలను తాకే విధంగా ఉంటే... ఆ తర్వాత హీరో అన్వేషణ, కాపాడాలనే తాపత్రయాన్ని ప్రేక్షకులు అర్థం చేసుకుంటారు. అటువంటిది ఏదీ జరగలేదు. స్వతహాగా సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ కావడంతో కె.వి. గుహన్ ప్రతి ఫ్రేమ్‌ను అందంగా తీర్చిదిద్దారు. అయితే... సన్నివేశాలు ప్రేక్షకులకు కనెక్ట్ అయ్యేలా తీయడంలో ఫెయిల్ అయ్యారు. చివరి 20 నిమిషాలు బావుంది.

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారు? : సాధారణంగా ఇటువంటి థ్రిల్లర్స్‌లో నటీనటులకు పెర్ఫార్మన్స్ చేసే ఆస్కారం లభించదు. సన్నివేశాల్లో తీవ్రత ఆధారంగా ఉత్కంఠ పెరుగుతూ ఉంటుంది. ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు చేశారు. మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్ ముఖంలో అమాయకత్వం కనిపించింది. ఆమె పాత్రకు అది సూట్ అయ్యింది. సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ పాత్రలో అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ పర్వాలేదు. సయామీ ఖేర్ ఫిట్నెస్, పాత్రకు అవసరమైన శరీరాకృతి ఉండటంతో పోలీస్ రోల్‌లో ఆమెను తీసుకున్నట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. 'స్వామి రారా' సత్యకు పెద్దగా నవ్వించే అవకాశం లభించలేదు. రమ్య పసుపులేటి, మిగతా వాళ్ళ పాత్రలు అలా వచ్చి అలా వెళ్ళిపోతాయి.

ఫైనల్‌గా చెప్పేది ఏంటంటే? : 'హైవే' కాదిది... నార్మల్ రోడ్. ఆ రోడ్డులో బండికి బ్రేకులు పడ్డాయి. అనూహ్యమైన మలుపులు కానీ, ఆసక్తి కలిగించే సన్నివేశాలు కానీ ఎక్కువ లేవు. చివరి 20 నిమిషాలు ఆసక్తిగా సాగింది. హత్యలు చేయడానికి సైకో కిల్లర్ చెప్పే కారణం బలంగా ఉండటంతో పాటు కథనం ఉత్కంఠగా సాగి ఉంటే ఫలితం మరోలా ఉండేది ఏమో!? ఇప్పుడు అయితే ఈ 'హైవే'ప్రయాణం కట్టుకోవడం కష్టమే.

In the latest thriller from Telugu filmmaker KV Guhan ( 118 , WWW ), a serial killer on the loose, crosses paths with a woman in search of her father and a wedding photographer trying to reach an assignment. Highway , which is being streamed on Aha, is utterly predictable, with the only surprise contained in its final scene.

En route from Vishakhapatnam to Bengaluru, Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda) and his buddy Samudram (Satya) meet Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan), who has set out in the dead of the night to reunite with her father. Prone to mishaps and given to snivelling at the drop of a hat, Tulasi has the words “I am the next victim of the serial killer terrorising the countryside” all but tattooed on her forehead.

Das (Abhishek Banerjee) has managed to evade Special Task Force officer Asha (Saiyami Kher). He has notched up five kills, rips another woman to pieces on Asha’s watch, and finds his next victim in Tulasi. With some clever thinking from Vishnu, who has fallen for Tulasi, Asha and her team get closer to finding Das.

Perfunctorily filmed and performed from start to finish, the 123-minute film plays out like a cinematic version of television crime dramas. Asha’s intelligence at finding clues into Das’s whereabouts is countermanded by Tulasi’s grating whimpering.

Das’s dastardliness adds nothing to the serial killer canon. The depiction of one of his murders borders on the gratuitous. At least the climax is a departure from such films, even if it comes after a tour of the overly familiar.

విష్ణు (ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ) ఓ ఫొటోగ్రాఫ‌ర్‌. ప్రీ వెడ్డింగ్ షూట్ కోసం స్నేహితుడైన స‌ముద్రంతో (సత్య) క‌లిసి వైజాగ్ నుండి బెంగ‌ళూరు బ‌య‌లుదేరుతాడు. మంగ‌ళూరులో ఉన్న త‌న తండ్రిని క‌లుసుకోవ‌డానికి తుల‌సి (మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్) ఒంట‌రిగా బ‌య‌లుదేరుతుంది. మ‌ధ్యలో బ‌స్ మిస్ కావ‌డంతో ఆమెకు విష్ణు లిఫ్ట్ ఇస్తాడు. కొద్ది ప‌రిచ‌యంలోనే తుల‌సితో విష్ణు ప్రేమ‌లో ప‌డ‌తాడు.

మ‌రోవైపు హైద‌రాబాద్ న‌గ‌రంలో ఓ సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ (అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ) వ‌రుస‌గా యువతులను హ‌త్య చేస్తుంటాడు. అత‌డిని ప‌ట్టుకోవ‌డానికి పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్ ఆశా భరత్ (సయామీ ఖేర్) ప్ర‌య‌త్నిస్తుంటుంది. పోలీస్ నిఘా పెరిగిపోవ‌డంతో సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ బెంగ‌ళూరు పారిపోవాల‌ని అనుకుంటాడు.

మార్గ‌మ‌ధ్యంలో అత‌డికి తుల‌సి క‌నిపించ‌డంతో ఆమెను కిడ్నాప్ చేస్తాడు. ఆ సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ బారి నుండి తుల‌సి ర‌క్షించ‌డానికి విష్ణు ఎలాంటి సాహ‌సం చేశాడు? పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్‌తో క‌లిసి విష్ణు అత‌డిని ప‌ట్టుకున్నాడా? తుల‌సిని ఆ సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ చంపేశాడా లేదా అన్న‌దే హైవే సినిమా ఇతివృత్తం.

ఓల్డ్ స్టైల్ లో...

పేరుకు ఇది 2022 లో తీసిన సినిమానే అయ‌నా రాత, తీత‌లో మాత్రం 2000 ద‌శ‌కంలోనే ఆగిపోయిన‌ట్లుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ జాన‌ర్ లో 2010 టైమ్ లో వచ్చిన కొరియన్ సినిమా ఐ సా ది డెవిల్ ను మరోసారి చూసిన భ‌యం క‌లుగుతుంది. కానీ హైవే మాత్రం ఒక్క‌సారి కంప్లీట్ చేయ‌డానికే నీర‌సం ముంచుకొచ్చేస్తుంది.

కన్ఫ్యూజన్ లో పడిపోయి..

హీరోహీరోయిన్లు, సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్‌, అత‌డిని ప‌ట్టుకోవ‌డానికి ప్ర‌య‌త్నించే లేడీ పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్ అంటూ నాలుగు పాత్ర‌ల‌ను భిన్న‌మైన నేప‌థ్యాల‌తో ప‌రిచ‌యం చేయ‌డం వ‌ర‌కు సినిమా ఓకే అనిపిస్తుంది. ఆ త‌ర్వాతే ఎటువైపు న‌డిపించాలో తెలియ‌ని అయోమ‌యంలో హైవేపై దారి త‌ప్పిన వెహికిల్‌గా సినిమా ఇష్టానుసారం సాగిపోతుంది

Highway Movie: సెంటిమెంట్ పండలేదు

హీరోయిన్ క్యారెక్ట‌ర్ నుండి సెంటిమెంట్ డ్రామాను పండిస్తూ సింప‌థీని క్రియేట్ చేయాల‌ని ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు అనుకున్నాడు. వ‌ర్క‌వుట్ కాలేదు. పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్‌గా స‌యామీఖేర్ ఇన్వెస్టిగేష‌న్ కేవ‌లం డైలాగ్స్ వ‌ర‌కే ప‌రిమిత‌మైంది. అప్పుడ‌ప్పుడు క‌నిపిస్తూ రెండు డైలాగ్స్ చెప్పి వెళ్లిపోతుంది. కొన్ని సీన్స్‌లో అయితే ఆమె ఇన్వెస్టిగేష‌న్ చేయ‌డం కంటే ఆప‌డ‌మే మంచిద‌నిపిస్తుంది.

సీరియ‌ల్ కిల్ల‌ర్ క్యారెక్ట‌రైజేష‌న్ డ‌బ్బింగ్ సినిమాలోని ఆర్టిస్ట్‌లా తెర‌పై వ‌చ్చే సీన్‌కు అత‌డి ఎక్స్‌ప్రేష‌న్‌కు సంబంధ‌మే ఉండ‌దు. అత‌డు ఎందుకు హ‌త్య‌లు చేస్తున్నాడ‌న్న‌ది ఎస్టాబ్లిష్ చేయలేదు. క్లైమాక్స్ గురించి ఎంత త‌క్కువ చెప్పుకుంటే అంత మంచింది.

ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ ప్లస్

ఉన్నంతలో ఆనంద్ దేవ‌ర‌కొండ ఒక్క‌డే కొంత‌వ‌ర‌కు యాక్టింగ్‌తో మెప్పించాడు. విష్ణుగా అత‌డి పాత్ర బాగుంది. హీరోయిన్ మాన‌స రాధాకృష్ణ‌న్ తో (Manasa Radhakrishnan)పాటు స‌యామీఖేర్ యాక్టింగ్ బేసిక్స్ లెవల్ లోనే ఆగిపోయింది.

సైకో కిల్ల‌ర్ పాత్ర‌కు అభిషేక్ బెన‌ర్జీ స‌రిగ్గా కుద‌ర‌లేదు. థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ సినిమాలో కామెడీ అవ‌స‌రం లేద‌ని అనుకున్నాడో ఏమో దర్శకుడు కమెడియన్ గా కేవలం సత్యను మాత్రమే తీసుకున్నాడు. అత‌డు కూడా న‌వ్వించ‌కూడ‌ద‌ని ఫిక్స్ అయిన‌ట్లున్నాడు. ఒక్క సీన్ లో కూడా అతడి కామెడీ వర్కవుట్ కాలేదు.

ద‌ర్శ‌కుడిగా విఫ‌ల‌మైన సినిమాటోగ్రాఫ‌ర్ గా మాత్రం కె.వి గుహ‌న్ ఆక‌ట్టుకున్నాడు. ప్ర‌తి సీన్ అందంగా తెర‌కెక్కించాడు. సినిమాల్లో రెండే పాట‌లు ఉన్నాయి. అవి కూడా సినిమా నిడివిని పెంచ‌డానికే ఉప‌యోగ‌ప‌డ్డాయి.

ముందుకు కదలదు...

హైవే ప్ర‌యాణం మొత్తం గ‌జిబిజిగా సాగిపోతూ గంద‌ర‌గోళానికి గురిచేస్తుంది. సినిమాలో చాలా సార్లు ప‌ల్లెవెలుగు బస్ ను చూపిస్తారు. ఆ త‌ర్వాత అది ముందుకు క‌ద‌ల‌క మోరాయించిన‌ట్లుగా చెబుతారు. ఈసినిమా కూడా అదే ఫీల్ ను కలిగిస్తుంది. నిదానంగా సాగుతూ ఎంత‌కూ ముందుకు క‌ద‌ల‌దు.

Anand Deverakonda’s Highway starts premiering on Aha from today. It is directed by cinematographer-turned-director KV Guhan and is produced by Venkat Talari. The film saw the debut of Malayalam actress Manasa Radhakrishnan in Telugu. It also has Paatal Lok of fame, Abhishek Banerjee, and Saiyami Kher.

Plot of the movie: It is all about hunting a man who is a serial killer and murders over half a dozen women, and what makes Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda), a photographer, chase the killer.

The film begins with the media talking about the serial killer (Abhishek Banerjee) and the cops analysing one of the murders, and then comes the introduction of Vishnu and his cute little family, attempting to make reels for Instagram. The story unravels when Vishnu travels to Bengaluru for an event coverage and the sequence of events that happen en route, including meeting Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan), a nave girl travelling to Manglore to meet her father, whom she has never seen or met, is what the film is all about.

The first half of the film is thrilling, keeping you guessing about the next sequence, while the second half gets completely boring. You won’t be surprised even if people around you doze off—reason? A predictable plot that even a fifth-standard child can guess. The climax is something both funny and illogical that will leave you wondering as to why the entire crew and cast have gone ahead with it.

Performances: Speaking of performances, Abhishek as a psycho killer nailed it, while Manasa made an impressive debut as a village belle. Anand could’ve performed better to his abilities, and the same goes with Saiyami, as their performances felt very casual and not up to the mark. No one else’s performance is actually noteworthy enough to even talk about. The same goes with the music.

However, one can see the high technicalities in the film. The scenic beauty of mother earth was captured so well that one will surely get lost in “googling” about the locations chosen in the film.

KV Guhan showed off his cinematography skills in an excellent way while he lacked in the direction aspect. The gripping second half of the film can make Highway a good watch. The lagging script, slow pace, and clichéd story made it a boring watch, despite the first half of the film being intense and gripping. It is disappointing that the scenes which manage to escape this predictability are the ones where logic goes for a toss and the audience is taken for granted.

Conclusion: An “Okayish” rudderless thriller film makes it to the one-time watch list for the likes of thriller films.

Story Review

The story is all about a psycho killer running loose on the highway and how cops try to save the people from him. Police Officer Asha Bharat (Siami Kher) takes up charge to nab the psycho killer D aka Das (Abhishek Bannerjee) as he wreaks fear among people by brutally killing women. Asha Bharat alerts all the people to be vigilant as she goes out to hunt him down.

Whether Asha is successful in her attempt and how photographer Vishnu (Anand Devarakondaa) and innocent girl Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishna) got affected and what is the relation between them form the thrills of Highway.

Artists, Technicians Review

The story of Highway is all about a psycho thriller and KV. Guhan tried to showcase the new avatar of Anand Devarakonda and pit him against the talented actor Abhishek Bannerjee. The idea of Guhan is right as he planned to show Anand Devarakonda in a different role. But there ends Guhan's tryst with creativity. The title Highway generated interest but he failed to generate the same interest with his story, screenplay, and direction.

Guhan's story turned out to be routine and predictable to the core. The film lacked the twists and turns to thrill the viewers. Even the two hours duration looked unending with insipid screenplay and direction. To top of it, even the performances of the actors and the technicians barring a few, turned out to be a disappointment.

Anand Devarakonda tried his best to take the film to next level with his performances but failed in his attempt. He failed to make the right impact on the viewers. Manasa Radhakrishnan came up with a singular expression to show fear and she did not get much opportunity to showcase her talent. Siami Kher is ok in her role as a cop but she did not look at ease while performing. Abhishek Bannerjee is known for his exceptional acting skills in Bollywood and serials but failed to recreate the same magic in his Tollywood debut project.

Simon King with his background music elevated the scenes to some extent. KV.Guhan's cinematography is good as it depicted the scenes in a natural manner. Tammiraju's editing left a lot to be desired.  There are many unwanted scenes in the film but he couldn't be faulted as the entire story turned out to be weak. Dialogues penned by Sai Kiran and Mirchi Kiran are just average. Production values are ok.

Guhan's Highway lacked novelty in the story and the screenplay. Everything turned out to be silly and the romantic angle is not highlighted properly so that viewers get connected emotionally. Overall the film failed to connect chords with the viewers. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 1 rating for Highway.

Highway movie review: Anand Deverakonda's serial killer film tortures you more than the killer his victims

Highway movie review: kv guhan’s serial killer film starring anand deverakonda and abhishek banerjee is illogical, bland, and lackluster in every way conceivable..

There is a scene in KV Guhan’s thriller Highway, where the serial killer D ( Abhishek Banerjee in his Tollywood debut) tapes his victim’s eyes open so that they can witness their own torture. Frankly, watching the film for two hours felt a lot like that--tortured, painful, and waiting for it to end. Highway is a simple film with a promising premise, which falters so badly in execution that you wonder how one can make such a lackluster film with a decent plot and good actors. Highway, set in the outskirts of Hyderabad, introduces us to photographer Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda), who is travelling to Bangalore for an event. Along the way, he helps a runaway teenager named Tulasi, who needs to get to her estranged father. A parallel track sees police officer Asha Bharath (Saiyami Kher) hunting a dangerous serial killer, who has killed five women and is on the hunt for more. How these two stories converge and Vishnu finds himself in a dangerous situation forms the crux of the film.

As I said, an interesting premise but it all goes downhill from here. The plot has more holes in it than a kitchen sieve, the acting is either monotonous or over-the-top (there’s no middle ground), and the background music is a serious assault on the senses. The comedy is so cringeworthy, sexist and forced that it often feels like you are watching something from the 90s.

It seems the makers and writers of the film have never met real people or observed how real people behave. Because in this film, everybody behaves as illogically as possible, as if it’s a stupidity contest. Cops can’t see an obvious clue dangling in front of their eyes, the killer tries his best to behave like a killer at every possible moment without any worry about getting caught, and women disregard safety while a serial killer is on the loose. I stopped noticing logical flaws halfway into the film because it was hard to keep up by then.

The film lacks finesse and subtlety, with every character repeating what is happening on the screen just so that the audience do not miss it. It is like hammering a nail that is already all the way inside the wall. It’s redundant and infuriating. But is there anything redeeming in Highway? Abhishek Banerjee, of course! The Pataal Lok-fame actor has been handed an undercooked and unidimensional character with no coherent back story and he still manages to do something special with it. He is menacing, scary, and at times, even fun to watch. Everyone else falls flat sadly. Saiyami Kher, normally a reliable performer, has been reduced to just standing at crime scenes exasperated. She and her character both deserve better. Anand Deverokonda is lackluster and frankly looks like a cardboard cutout at times. Manasa Radhakrishnan tries to play the part of a hapless, innocent teenager to the best of her abilities. But sadly, the script and direction do not help her much in the process.

Highway began streaming on Aha Telugu from Friday, August 19, and frankly it is a good choice that the film chose not to release in theatres. On OTT, it may find some audience. But it’s hard to see why anyone would voluntarily watch this film. It’s a cautionary tale on how not to approach an interesting subject. Watch it only if you are prepared to be disappointed in more ways than you can count.

Vijay Deverekonda is arguably one of the most popular names in the Telugu film industry. The same, however, can’t be said about his brother Anand. While the young actor gave a glimpse of his abilities in Dorasaani and Middle Class Melodies, he isn’t regarded as an A-lister. Anand is now back with his latest film, Highway, which is out now on aha. The film, sadly, is a step in the wrong direction for the young actor. Highway had the potential to be a deeply unnerving thriller with a strong message, but it ends up being nothing more than a missed opportunity.

Highway revolves around Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda), a photographer who travels to Bengaluru with a close friend for an assignment. He faces an unexpected problem on his way. This forces him to spend some time at a dhaba, where he meets Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan), an innocent young woman with a tragic past. They soon cross paths with a serial killer (Abhishek Banerjee). Will they survive this potentially life-threatening situation?

The plot per se isn’t bad as it pretty much has everything right from a bit of violence to romantic sequences that one expects from a desi thriller. It, however, does not make any impact as the execution is as bland as it gets.

Highway begins with a scene in which Vishnu speaks about how a journey on a particular highway ruined three lives. This sequence, sadly, falls flat as it tries too hard to shock viewers. We are then subjected to a series of underwhelming scenes, which introduce us to the other characters. As a result, one isn't really able to relate to the plot.

However, Highway picks up a pace after Abhishek Banerjee’s entry. There are a couple of inherently disturbing scenes which cater to those familiar with slasher films. This, however, isn’t enough to salvage the film.

Generally, thrillers feature at least a couple of twists that add a new layer to the narrative. Take the Joju George-led Joseph, for instance. It featured a major reveal towards the end, which established the titular character as a braveheart. Highway, sadly, doesn't feature anything even remotely resembling a twist. Highway ends with a couple of rushed scenes, which feel forced and awkward.

Coming to performances, Anand Deverakonda rises above the half-baked script to shine in the romantic scenes. His sweet and shy expressions may vaguely remind people of Vijay Deverakonda from Geetha Govindam. This, however, doesn’t count for much, as the romantic subplot is undercooked.

Abhishek Banerjee is menacing in a few scenes, but Highway is hardly another Paatal Lok for him. He deserved a meatier character. Saiyami Kher, who plays a cop, is passable. She gets the body language right. Manasa Radhakrishnan is burdened with a one-dimensional character.

The songs are hummable but have limited recall value. The background score is commendable as it tries to add a sense of urgency to the narrative in a bid to save the film. The other technical aspects are up to the mark.

To sum up, Highway is the textbook definition of a shoddy thriller.

Highway Movie Review: Anand Deverakonda-KV Guhan's Latest Is A Missable Age-Old Serial-Killer Drama!

KV Guhan, who directed actor Kalyan Ram in a thriller titled 118 , has come up with another serial killer movie with Anand Deverakonda, Highway. The movie had a direct OTT release on Aha.

The story of the film is a routine run-of-the-mill thriller packed with the age-old tropes of a blood-thirsty serial killer who draws pleasure out of torturing young female victims and eventually killing them. The damsel in distress is rescued by the hero whose only aim is to save her; an anxious cop who is almost on the verge of captivating the killer but dies at his hands.

Vishnu, a photographer from Visakhapatnam sets out with his friend Satya to Bengaluru for a pre-wedding shoot. In a small village in Amalapuram, Tulasi, a woman hits the road to meet his father in Mangalore, following a sexual assault incident at workplace.

On the other hand, Saiyami Kher, who was seen in the role of a Chief Investigating Officer trying to nab the serial killer, is kind of wasted. She is always furious and anxious about the killer who is very lousy, making it unbearable for the viewer. How she gets killed by the serial killer is another moment of distress.

Performances:

Highway's cast included Anand Deverakonda, who tried to bring out his best for the role that almost demanded nothing. The girl, Manasa, who marked her Telugu debut, looked the part of an innocent girl, who gets caught in odd situations often, only for the hero to do something. Abhishek Banerjee, who is now the staple choice for a psycho killer did what is expected out of him and for a couple of scenes, John Vijay did his best. The movie has a lousy narration and does not offer anything new other than the fact that the killer will be killed towards the end by a Tiger in the middle of the forest. Watching Highway gives a feeling of watching the same old story coupled with boring performances under a new name.

Almost none

The movie does not have anything to help it become an average thriller and that is enough to chart out the negatives or letdowns of Highway, including the title.

Highway, directed by cinematographer-turned filmmaker KV Guhan is a passable movie. Watch only if you have nothing else to do.

లేటెస్ట్ గా ఓటిటి లో రిలీజ్ కి వచ్చిన మరో ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ చిత్రం “హై వే”. యంగ్ హీరో ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ అలాగే ప్రముఖ సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ టర్న్డ్ దర్శకుడు కే వి గుహన్ తెరకెక్కించిన ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ థ్రిల్లర్ ఇది. అయితే ఈ సినిమా మన తెలుగు స్ట్రీమింగ్ యాప్ ఆహా లో లేటెస్ట్ గా డైరెక్ట్ రిలీజ్ అయ్యింది. మరి ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉందో సమీక్షలో తెలుసుకుందాం రండి.

ఇక కథలోకి వచ్చినట్టు అయితే.. విష్ణు(ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ) ఒక ఫోటోగ్రాఫర్ తన జాబ్ కోసం అని బెంగళూర్ కి స్టార్ట్ అవుతాడు. అలాగే మరోపక్క తులసి(మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్) తన తల్లితో ఓ పౌల్ట్రీ ఫామ్ లో పనిచేస్తుంది. కానీ అక్కడ తన ఓనర్ వేధింపులు చూడలేక అక్కడ నుంచి పారిపోతుంది.. మరి ఇదిలా ఉంటే మరో పక్క ఓ సీరియల్ కిల్లర్ డి అలియాస్ దాస్(అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ) వరుసగా 5 హత్యలు అందులోని ఆడవాళ్లనే చంపుతాడు. మరి దీనితో అతన్ని పట్టుకోవాలని పోలీసులు తీవ్రంగా గాలిస్తూ ఉంటారు. దీనితో అతడు వారి నుంచి తప్పించేకునే ప్రయత్నంలో అటు దాస్, తులసి లు ఇటు ఈ సైకో.. మరి ఈ ముగ్గురు ఎక్కడైనా ఎదురవుతారా? ఎదురయితే ఆ సైకో కిల్లర్ ఏం చేస్తాడు? ఇంతకీ పోలీసులు అతన్ని పట్టుకుంటారా లేదా అనేది తెలియాలి అంటే ఈ సినిమాని ఆహా లో చూడాల్సిందే.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ చిత్రంలో ఆకట్టుకునే అంశాలు చాలానే ఉంటాయని చెప్పొచ్చు.. సినిమా మెయిన్ గా మూడు ప్రధాన పాత్రల మీద నడుస్తుంది. హీరో హీరోయిన్ అలాగే కిల్లర్ పాత్రలు ఆధ్యంతం ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. వీటిని అయితే దర్శకుడు బాగా డిజైన్ చేశారు. అలాగే సినిమాలో స్టార్టింగ్ గాని విలన్ పాత్రకు సంబంధించి డెవలప్మెంట్ ఆసక్తిగా అనిపిస్తాయి. అంతే కాకుండా దానికి ఇచ్చిన ముగింపు అన్నీ కూడా బాగున్నాయి.

ఇక నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే మెయిన్ లీడ్ ఆనంద్ దేవరకొండ అలాగే యంగ్ హీరోయిన్ మానస రాధా కృష్ణన్ ఆకట్టుకుంటారు. ఆనంద్ నుంచి తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చిన మరో సినిమా ఇది. తాను ఇంతకు ముందు చేసిన వాటికన్నా మంచి మెచ్యూర్ రోల్ లో తాను కనిపించి ఆకట్టుకుంటాడు. అలాగే మానస రాధాకృష్ణన్ పవన్ ఫ్యాన్స్ కి బాగా తెలిసి ఉండొచ్చు..

ఆ టైం లో పవన్ 28వ సినిమాకి అంటూ బజ్ తెచ్చుకున్న ఈ హీరోయిన్ ని ఈ సినిమాకి ఎంపిక చేయగా ఈమె ఈ సినిమాతో డెఫినెట్ గా ఆశ్చర్యపరుస్తుంది. తన క్యూట్ లుక్స్ సహా నటనతో కూడా ఆకట్టుకుంది. మరి నటుడు అభిషేక్ బెనర్జీ అయితే తన సైకో పాత్రలో ఇంటెన్స్ పెర్ఫామెన్స్ ని చూపించాడు. తనదైన మ్యానరిజమ్స్.. నటనతో థ్రిల్ చేసాడు. ఇక సైయామి ఖేర్ తదితరులు సినిమాలో తమ పాత్రలకి బ్యాయం చేకూర్చారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ సినిమాలో కొన్ని అంశాలు లాజికల్ గా బాగానే అనిపిస్తాయి కానీ కొన్ని సీన్స్ విషయంలో మాత్రం లాజిక్స్ మిస్ అవ్వడంతో మాత్రం అవి ఇరికించినట్టుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. అలాగే మంచి ఆసక్తిగా ఉండే సినిమాలో కథతో సాగే విధంగా పాటలు ఉంటే బాగుంటుంది కానీ కావాలని పాటల్ని పెడితే అవి ఏమాత్రం వర్కౌట్ కావు సరిగా ఈ సినిమాలో కూడా అదే జరిగింది.

అలాగే మరికొన్ని సన్నివేశాల్లో అయితే కథనం కాస్త నెమ్మదించినట్టుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. దీనితో బోర్ భావన కలగొచ్చు. అలాగే సినిమాలో కొన్ని సీన్స్ ని మరింత ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ మార్చే స్కోప్ ఉన్నా దర్శకుడు ఆ స్క్రీన్ స్పేస్ ని వినియోగించలేదు. అలాగే పలు చోట్ల గ్రాఫికల్ విజువల్స్ క్లియర్ గా తెలిసిపోతాయి..

సాంకేతిక వర్గం :

ఈ చిత్రంలో నిర్మాణ విలువలు డీసెంట్ గా ఉన్నాయని చెప్పొచ్చు. ఇక టెక్నీకల్ టీం లో అయితే సైమన్ కే ఇచ్చిన పాటలు పర్వాలేదు కానీ బ్యాక్గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ మాత్రం సినిమాకి తగ్గట్టుగా ఓ రేంజ్ లో అనిపిస్తుంది. అలాగే డైలాగ్స్ బాగున్నాయి. ఎడిటింగ్ పర్వాలేదు..

ఇక సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ మరియు దర్శకత్వం వహించిన కేవీ గుహన్ విషయానికి వస్తే…సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ తాను మంచి వర్క్ ని అందించాడు. ఇక దర్శకునిగా కూడా పర్వాలేదని చెప్పొచ్చు. మంచి థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ లాజిక్స్ తో పాత్రలను కలపడం, వాటికీ మంచి ముగింపు ఇవ్వడంతో ఇంప్రెస్ చేస్తాడు. కాకపోతే చిన్న చిన్న లోపాలు కూడా ఉన్నాయి. వాటిని సరి చేసుకుంటే ఇంకా బెటర్ నరేషన్ ని ఇవ్వగలడు.

ఇక మొత్తంగా చూసినట్టు అయితే ఈ “హై వే” చిత్రంలో ఆకట్టుకునే థ్రిల్లింగ్ ఎలిమెంట్స్ అలాగే ప్రధాన పాత్రలకి మంచి లాజిక్స్ తో కూడిన స్టార్ట్ ఎండ్ ఉంటాయి. కాకపోతే దర్శకుడు కొన్ని చోట్ల మాత్రం కథనం నెమ్మదిగా నడపడం, మరికొన్ని చోట్ల చిన్నపాటి లాజిక్స్ మిస్సవ్వడం వంటివి ఫ్లో ని దెబ్బ తీస్తాయి. వీటిని పక్కన పెడితే ఓ డీసెంట్ థ్రిల్లర్ ని చూడాలి అనుకుంటే ఈ సినిమా తప్పకుండా చూడొచ్చు.

OTT Watchlist: Highway, Thriller Offers No Thrill

Besides Hollywood, Korean cinema has mastered the art of making Serial killer movies. Scores of serial killer thrillers from Korea won global fame. Cinematographer turned director KV Guhan of “118” fame explored the same genre in “Highway”, premiering on Aha Video on August 19.

Starring Anand Deverakonda, newcomer Manasa Radhakrishnan and ‘Paatal Lok’ fame Abhishek Bannerjee as the lead actors, “Highway” deals with the theme of a serial killer on the prowl.

Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda), a photographer in Vizag, agrees to film a pre-wedding shoot in Bengaluru. He meets Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan), an innocent young girl who is on her way to Mangalore to meet her father. Falling in love at first sight with her, Vishnu agrees to drop her at the Kalyan Durga bus stand.

At the same time, Hyderabad police, headed by officer Asha (Saiyami Kher), are hunting a serial killer named D (Abhishek Banerjee). The police get a clue that he is on the Bengaluru highway. Will Tulasi become D’s next target on the highway?

The film begins with a line that people meet for a reason and meetings can change the course of one’s life. The thriller has a decent premise. But the narration runs on a beaten track. Neither the serial killer’s story nor Tulasi-Vishnu’s story is engaging enough. The climax involving a wild animal is silly.

Despite having a short running time of 2 hours, director Guhan has presented the film with less thrilling elements. Anand Deverakonda who impressed us with “Middle-Class Melodies” has played an unimportant main lead. Newcomer Manasa Radhakrishnan fits the bill as an innocent village girl. Saiyami Kher as a police officer and Abhishek Banerjee as a serial killer do the routine job.

The film is mostly set on the highway. The Aerial shots are impressive.

‘Highway’, in a nutshell, doesn’t provide a thrill. Watch it only if you have time to kill.

What Is the Film About? A Psycho is on a spree of eliminating girls. He is an ambulance driver and often gets away as the ambulance is given free passage. One day, he is after Tulasi a cursed girl who runs away from a sadist owner to his father in Mangalore. Police and Vishnu (Anand Deverakonda) who falls in love with her at first sight try to rescue her. How that operation happens is the story all about.

Performances This is the fourth film of Anand Deverakonda and his second Direct-to-OTT release. Anand has severe screen presence and performance issues. Except for Middle-Class Melodies to some extent, he struggled in all the films. Highway is no different.

He often tries to mask his inadequacies by choosing content-driven films that do not need him to expose more of himself. That is a good idea but the problem lies in the bad writing he is presented with. The character of Vishnu is the weakest hero characterization in recent times. He gets to do nothing in the film. In such a character, his lack of screen presence and struggle to emote are exposed big time.

Forget about the performances and screen presence, there is very little screen time for Anand. We get a feeling if his portions were chopped off to reduce the runtime.

Manasa Radhakrishnan plays the female lead. She plays a character that suffers so much in life. It almost requires her to cry from start to end with a single expression. She does that alright. Abhishek Banerjee is menacing as the psycho villain. Saiyami Kher is okay in the role of a cop. Comedian Sathya is wasted in a small role.

Analysis Cinematographer cum director KV Guhan bagged a hit with Nandamuri Kalyan Ram’s 118 in 2019. He followed it with another failure, WWW released directly on OTT. He came up with another thriller, Highway which also landed on OTT (Aha Video).

Highway is a road trip thriller comprising three tracks – A psychopath ambulance driver and the police, Vishnu, a photographer who is on his way to an event in Bengaluru, and Tulasi who is running away from her father who abandoned her mother a long ago. Vishnu falls for Tulasi and the psycho is after her on expected lines.

The psycho and his sadist acts are introduced initially. These portions generate some interest initially but the story loses steam once the love track happens. The heroine may be because her looks or characterization do not evoke interest in those portions. Anand Deverakonda’s lack of screen presence also ensures that the chemistry does not happen. A song that comes here is good to ears and eyes but does not gel in the proceedings.

On a parallel track, we have a police investigation happening. This track and the killing spree are supposed to be the backbone of the thriller. They should generate interest in the story with some thrills and twists. But nothing happens. Everything runs on predictable lines and gives us a repetitive feeling.

The hero as expected brings a clue (courier track) to solve the case but it appears silly. The director appears to run out of ideas to give a proper closure to the story. Once that happens, everything becomes predictable and boring once again. The climax is another sham. The so-called twist in the name of divine intervention is silly.

Finally, Highway is that kind of thriller that does not have any thrills. The narration is flat right from start to end with boring and repetitive scenes. Only the villain portions show some promise. The graph drops further towards the end. The makers have taken a smart choice by offloading the film to OTT.

Music and Other Departments? As said earlier, KV Guhan failed to come up with a good script with taut narration and interesting thrills. However, he did a good job with some good visuals. The visuals of the highway and the forests are neatly shown. Simon K King came up with an impressive background score. It has worked very well in some portions. There is a single romantic song that is good but disturbs the flow of the film. Editing is patchy with no smooth flow in places. Production Values are good.

Highway is a mystery criminal thriller film in Telugu that was written and directed by K. V. Guhan in 2022. It was produced by Venkat Talari under the banners of Sree Iswarya Lakshmi Movies and Northstar Entertainment. Principal parts in the movie are played by Anand Deverakonda, Manasa Radhakrishnan (in her Telugu debut), and Abhishek Banerjee (in his Telugu debut). Highway made its debut on Aha on August 19, 2022.

Anand Devarakonda’s character Vishnu begins the movie by narrating his tale.

Rewind: Vishnu is a photographer who resides in Hyderabad with his mother, sister, and grandma. As Asha Bharat (Saiyami Kher) and her team investigate the case of a serial murderer named ‘D’ (Abhishek Banerjee) who kills young girls for his delight, he flies to Bangalore with his longtime buddy Samudram (Satya) to shoot a wedding. In contrast, D kills another girl, bringing him and Asha closer to each other. Tulasi (Manasa Radhakrishnan), a young, innocent, and beautiful village girl who lives with her mother and works on a dairy farm, decides to travel to Mangalore to escape her boss’s torture in order to marry her and meet her father, who abandoned them.

Highway, A Destination Film, A Journey To Free Myself

Destination films are often a balm to our souls, allowing us to escape from the confines of our homes, something we all craved especially in the year of the pandemic. We dreamt of bachelor trips in Spain, trekking with school friends in Manali, and of spiritual awakenings in Bali.

But some journeys are more liberating than others. Some free you from the shackles of pain you've put on yourself, from the mufflers you put on your own heart and throat so that your every day could be a little bit more bearable. One such journey is the one Veera Tripathi (played by a mesmerising Alia Bhatt) undertakes in Imtiaz Ali's Highway (2014).

Highway follows a young daughter of a Delhi industrialist, kidnapped from a petrol station, who discovers what it feels to be free on the roads of India. The film co-stars a magnetic Randeep Hooda as the kidnapper and petty thief Mahabir, who kidnaps Veera with his compatriots, not realising her father has powerful ties to the government.

As they travel across the country evading the police, Veera discovers newfound independence, one away from her haunted past of being sexually abused by her family. She reveals this to Mahabir, whose conflicted feelings about the girl he kidnapped grow to become affection. He even tries to help her escape by dropping her off at a police station, but she vehemently refuses, as she has found happiness in the vagabond life that she and Mahabir shared.

As they both share troubling stories from their childhood, we see two kindred souls becoming balms for each other's spirit, a momentary love story that soothes us in the process. This, like most road movies, is a bildungsroman, but the journey Veera takes is not just the one where she is physically kidnapped, but also towards her choice to be free and unapologetically herself. She discovers the futility of running away from her problems deep within the salt flats of Gujarat and reflects on the expanse of the world around her at the foothills of the Himalayas. Gone is the quiet, compliant girl in the first twenty or thirty minutes of the film; we begin to see the spark of curiosity and the childlike joy that she spreads to everyone around her.

Highway was a painful first watch for me, especially the visceral reaction at the end of the film when Veera finally confronts her tormentors and allows herself to feel pain at Mahabir's death. It was a provocative mirror for me, one that pushed me to confront my own struggles with mental health. But it was equally the freedom and empowerment Veera felt in occupying her own space, alongside the struggle to let go of what hurt her, that allowed me to act upon my own tribulations.

Since 2014, I can safely say that I've not only played 'Patakha Guddi' on repeat as a fight song, but last year permanently inked the Irshad Kamil lyrical masterpiece on my left arm, to serve as an everyday reminder of how proud I am of my journey to myself. So, I implore you, dear reader: go on, find yourself.

Directed and written by K.V. Guhan and produced by Venkat Talari, the film will hit aha Telugu screens on  19th August 2022 . aha, has launched the teaser on 9th August.

The “Highway” is a psychological thriller about a photographer Vishnu (Anand Devarakonda), falling in love with Tulasi (Manasa), who was sheltered all her life. When everything is going great, his life turns upside down when a serial killer named D kidnaps his lady love. With the help of inspector Asha Bharat (Sayami Kher), will Vishnu able to save Tulasi in time?

Director K.V. Guhan  said, “post-Covid wave one, there was an unprecedented change in the film industry, and at the same time, we were all connected to the world content irrespective of the language. There was a massive opening for concept films, new experiments, and novel thoughts. That’s when I narrated this idea to Anand and Abhishek, and being explorers themselves, they said yes. The more you get into the story, it ignites the characters in different shades, and every twist and turn is new. I got support from aha in telling this story. I am sure the audience will be attached to it in a binge-watch.”
