Study concepts, example questions & explanations for basic arithmetic, all basic arithmetic resources, example questions, example question #1 : addition and subtraction with time.

Jimmy started taking his math test at 11:03AM, and he finished at 12:29PM. How many minutes did it take Jimmy to finish the test?

he his homework for 2 hours

First, we need to find how long it took Jimmy to finish the test.

Subtract the hours, then subtract the minutes.

he his homework for 2 hours

Now, the question asks how many MINUTES it takes Jimmy to finish the test. Convert the hour into minutes.

he his homework for 2 hours

To add time, you add the hours together, then you add the minutes together.

he his homework for 2 hours

Because there are only 60 minutes in an hour, you cannot have a time whose minute value is greater than 60. In this case, subtract 60 minutes and add 1 more to the hour.

he his homework for 2 hours

and because

he his homework for 2 hours

Please choose the best answer for the question below.

he his homework for 2 hours

Melissa started practicing piano at 3:34PM. She practiced until 5:17PM. How long did she practice for?

2 hours and 17 minutes

1 hour and 43 minutes

1 hour and 17 minutes

2 hours and 43 minutes

To subtract time, subtract the minutes then subtract the hours.

John spent 3 4 hours doing homework. If 1 4 hours of that time was spent doing math homework, what fraction of his total time spent doing homework did he spend on math?

Find the fraction: the number of hours john spent doing homework is 3 4 hours . the number of hours john spent doing math homework is 1 4 hours . divide the number of hours john spent doing math homework by the number of hours john spent doing homework to obtain the fraction n of his total time spent doing homework did he spend on math. n = 1 4 3 4 = 1 4 × 4 3 = 1 3 hence, john spent 1 3 of the total homework time doing the math homework..

Kansas’ Hunter Dickinson says draft decision could come ‘sooner rather than later’

K ansas senior center Hunter Dickinson blocked some shots, hit some straight-on 3s and drove the lane for some slam dunks while also monitoring shooting drills and taking pictures with 200 or so youths for 4 1/2 hours Saturday at his youth basketball camp held at Sports Pavilion Lawrence.

What the 7-foot-2 native of Alexandria, Virginia did not do was reveal if he’s entering his name in the 2024 NBA Draft or returning to KU for a super-senior season.

“I’d like to get it done sooner rather than later, try to get it over with,” Dickinson told The Star, speaking of his upcoming decision while exiting the Pavilion with teammates Justin Cross and Chris Carter, who also were counselors at the FlexWork Management-sponsored Dickinson camp with fellow KU walk-on Patrick Cassidy.

Dickinson has until 10:59 p.m. Central on April 27 to declare for the draft if he wishes to do so. He could enter and still remove his name by May 29 to retain college eligibility.

“Work out, train, try to decide what I want to do for the next year, get better hopefully,” Dickinson said, when asked what’s ahead on his schedule.

Since the season ended he said he’s been “having fun with my teammates, hanging out with them. I really enjoyed my year with them. I feel they are more than teammates. They are friends.”

On Saturday, the Dickinson campers were part of a hectic scene at Rock Chalk Park on the west side of Lawrence. KU’s softball team was to play No. 1-ranked Texas at 2 p.m — 30 minutes after the conclusion of Dickinson’s one-day camp. Meanwhile, several thousand fans filed in and out of the track facility at Rock Chalk Park, coming and going for events at the 101st Kansas Relays. Suffice it to say all parking spots were taken in and around Rock Chalk Park on Saturday.

“Yes, with the Relays it was crazy,” Dickinson said. “I know it was a busy weekend. But I’m super happy (the campers) were able to come here and hopefully had fun. It went by really fast. I didn’t think it was going to go by that fast. I hope they got better and hope we can do it again soon. ”

Dickinson has been monitoring KU’s recent activity in the transfer portal.

“I’m super happy AJ was able to commit,” he said of Wisconsin sophomore guard AJ Storr , second-team all-Big Ten last season, “same with Zeke (Mayo, former South Dakota State guard) , same with Riley Kugel (former Florida guard). Coach (Bill) Self knows what he’s doing in the portal. I think he’s trying to assemble a really good team, so we’ll see.”

Dickinson, who played three seasons at Michigan before transferring to KU, averaged 17.9 points a game on 54.8% shooting during the 2023-24 season at KU. He hit 23 of 65 3s for 35.4% and 68 of 109 free throws for 62.4%. Dickinson, a first-team all-Big 12 pick, averaged 10.9 rebounds per game with 47 blocked shots and 76 assists to 58 turnovers.

Eminem Celebrates 16 Years of Sobriety on 4/20

The Detroit rapper got sober in 2008 following a near-fatal drug overdose.

Eminem is 16 years sober.

On Saturday, the Detroit rapper took to social media to celebrate the anniversary by sharing a picture of a new sobriety chip.

pic.twitter.com/SCwj1j44eG — Marshall Mathers (@Eminem) April 20, 2024

Back in 2022, Eminem opened up about his past addiction and eventual recovery in an essay published by XXL . According to the "Lose Yourself" rapper, he started taking pills following the release of 1999's The Slim Shady LP . Five years later, things took a turn for the worse after Em dropped another No. 1 album, 2002's The Eminem Show , and had begun working on what would become 2004's Encore .

“I was able to downplay my addiction and hide it for a while until it got really bad," he explained. "So, I’m coming off  The   Marshall Mathers LP  and going into  Encore  when my addiction started to get bad. I was taking Vicodin, Valium and alcohol. I kinda fell off the map a little bit and didn’t explain why I went away.”

From there, Eminem's addiction worsened after D12’s Proof died in 2006.

“I remember just after Proof died, I was in my house by myself, and I was just laying in bed and I couldn’t move and I just kept staring at the ceiling fan,” he recalled. “And I just kept taking more pills. I literally couldn’t walk for two days when that happened and eventually my drug use fuckin’ skyrocketed. I had fuckin’ 10 drug dealers at one time that I’m getting my shit from. Seventy-five to 80 Valiums a night, which is a lot. I don’t know how the fuckI’m still here. I was numbing myself.”

A near-death experience from an accidental methadone overdose back in 2007 ultimately led Eminem to get sober for good.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A former assistant principal at a Virginia elementary school showed a “shocking” lack of response to multiple warnings that a 6-year-old had a gun in the hours before he shot his teacher, according to a grand jury report released Wednesday.

“The child was not searched. The child was not removed from class. The police or SRO was not called,” the report said, referring to a school resource officer.

The report was released a day after the former administrator, Ebony Parker, was charged with eight counts of felony child neglect, one for “each of the eight bullets that endangered all the students” in teacher Abby Zwerner’s classroom, Newport News prosecutors said in a statement.

The 31-page report offers fresh details about the January 2023 shooting and serious wounding of Zwerner, which occurred after the boy brought his mother’s gun to school in a backpack. And it catalogues missed opportunities to provide more resources to the often-misbehaving student, as well as tools Parker could have used to remove him from class, such as alternative school, in the months before the shooting.

“Dr. Parker’s lack of response and initiative given the seriousness of the information she had received on Jan. 6, 2023 is shocking,” the grand jury report said. “This is only heightened by the fact that she was well aware of the child’s past disciplinary issues and had been involved in the decisions to address his behavior” in both the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years.

In this image taken from Uber dashcam video released by the Clark County, Ohio, Sheriff's Office, William Brock, right, holds a weapon to Uber driver Loletha Hall outside his home in South Charleston, Ohio, on March 25, 2024. Brock, 81, who authorities say fatally shot Hall who he thought was trying to rob him after scam phone calls deceived them both, was indicted on a murder charge, Monday, April 15, 2024, by a Clark County grand jury. Hall had no knowledge of the calls made to Brock, authorities said. (Clark County Sheriff's Office via AP)

One parent testified that during the latter of those two school years, her son was choked twice by a fellow classmate, but the parent was never given the boy’s identity or told that he had a history of such behavior, including choking his kindergarten teacher. It was the same boy who shot Zwerner, the report said.

The report accused Parker of criminal responsibility because she “neglected to take any action” the day of the shooting after receiving reports that the boy may have had a gun.

“Over the course of approximately two hours Dr. Parker acted in complete disregard for the safety of all the children in Ms. Zwerner’s class, all the children the child played with at recess, and all the children who could have been shot in the school,” the report said.

Parker, 39, posted $4,000 in secured bail Wednesday and did not yet have an attorney listed for her, the Newport News Circuit Court clerk’s office said.

The grand jury report provides a granular, often minute-by-minute accounting of each time the special grand jury said Parker disregarded concerns. For instance, one teacher spoke of a “visibly scared and shaking” child who reported seeing bullets from the boy’s 9mm handgun during recess.

A counselor, Rolonzo Rawles, then told Parker the same story, according to the report.

“Mr. Rawles, now the third person and fourth time this message had been relayed, went back to Dr. Parker and communicated that the child either had a gun or ammunition at least,” it said.

Parker refused to let the boy be searched after his backpack was examined, the report said, describing the child sitting as his desk with “a loaded firearm tucked into his jacket.”

“Ms. Zwerner was then left alone with 16 first-grade students in her class that day, of which one had been reported by three different students over the course of two hours to have a firearm,” it added.

In the weeks after the shooting, Newport News Public Schools announced that Parker had resigned .

She and other school officials also face a $40 million negligence lawsuit from Zwerner, whose accusations dovetail with many of the details in the grand jury’s report.

The similarities were emphasized Wednesday by Zwerner’s attorneys, Diane Toscano, Kevin Biniazan and Jeffrey Breit, who said the grand jury report “reveals a systemic failure that led to the shooting.”

Zwerner was sitting at a reading table in front of the class when the boy fired the gun, police said. The bullet struck Zwerner’s hand and then her chest, collapsing one of her lungs. She spent nearly two weeks in the hospital and has endured multiple surgeries as well as ongoing emotional trauma, according to her lawsuit.

The children who were in her class that day are also struggling emotionally.

One student “will not talk to anyone about what happened,” according to the report, while another boy covers his ears any time someone asks him about it.

“He is afraid that the child will come back someday and hurt him,” it said. “His mother is currently in therapy as a result.”

Yet another boy who reported the 6-year-old having the gun is also in therapy, struggling with the guilt that the shooting was his fault, according to the report.

And a woman whose daughter witnessed the shooting and was subsequently denied a request to transfer to a different school was said to have sold her house and drained her savings — all “so that her daughter could go to school without feeling afraid.”

Many children were denied transfers per school policy, according to the report, which recommended allowing them in cases where a medical professional confirms a child is still struggling.

The report also found that police responding to the shooting were unable to access the school immediately because the door-buzzer system was broken. They banged on the door for a full minute before a custodian let them in.

The grand jury recommended that all Newport News schools have an automatic system, such as key fobs or swipe cards, to allow law enforcement instantaneous entry.

Joe Alwyn Wanted to Keep His Relationship with Taylor Swift 'Personal' During 6-Year Romance: Source (Exclusive)

The British actor and the pop superstar — who dropped her latest album 'The Tortured Poets Department' on April 19 — dated for six years until early 2023

he his homework for 2 hours

Joe Alwyn was thrust into the spotlight when he started dating Taylor Swift back in 2016.

The couple’s breakup was confirmed by PEOPLE in April 2023 , and a year on from their split an Alwyn source tells PEOPLE that the British actor, 33, intentionally kept his relationship with the pop superstar — who just released her latest album The Tortured Poets Department — out of the public eye.

When friends learned he was dating Swift, 34, "[the relationship] took a lot of people by surprise," says the source, adding, "but he wasn’t showing off in some way.”

Despite the intense public interest in the relationship, Alwyn wanted the romance to remain "his own personal story," says the source.

On her latest body of work, Swift sings about feeling caged and lonely amid a failing romance. "I stopped trying to make him laugh / Stopped trying to drill the safe," she details on "So Long, London," which appears to have been inspired by her breakup with Alwyn. "And I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free."

And on "Fresh Out the Slammer," the pop star further shares how isolated she felt: "Another summer taking cover / Rolling thunder, he don't understand me / Splintered back in winter / Silent dinner, bitter he was with her in dreams."

Emma McIntyre/WireImage;Jon Kopaloff/WireImage

During their six-year romance, Alwyn and Swift both remained very private about their relationship, often deflecting about engagement rumors .

"If I had a pound for every time I think I've been told I've been engaged, then I'd have a lot of pound coins," the Conversations with Friends star told WSJ. Magazine in April 2022.

Jon Kopaloff/Getty

"I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn't say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn't say," he added.

The actor was first publicly linked to the "Karma" singer in May 2017 when it was revealed that they had been quietly dating for months. Fans have speculated that the duo first crossed paths at the 2016 Met Gala .

Christopher Polk/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank

While the former couple kept their cards close to their chest during their years together, they did attend several events , including the premiere of Alwyn’s movie  The Favourite at the New York Film Festival in 2018, the 2019 BAFTAs and the 2020 Golden Globes .

At the time of their split, a source close to the pair told PEOPLE that the breakup was largely due to the "differences in their personalities" and that they "ultimately weren't the right fit for one another."

John Shearer/Getty

Since their breakup, Swift — who has moved on with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — has been performing around the world for her record-breaking Eras Tour and recording her new studio album.

Meanwhile, Alwyn is gearing up for the release of his latest film, Kinds of Kindness .

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Starring Swift’s pal Emma Stone , who Alwyn appeared opposite in 2018’s The Favourite , the movie is “a triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing at sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader," an official synopsis reads.

The film also stars Willem Dafoe , Margaret Qualley , Jesse Plemons , Hong Chau , Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schaefer and it is set to have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, with a U.S. release date of June 21.

Man Sets Himself on Fire Near Courthouse Where Trump Is on Trial

Onlookers screamed as fire engulfed the man, who had thrown pamphlets in the air before he set himself aflame. He was taken to a hospital and died hours later.

A man set himself on fire on Friday afternoon near the Lower Manhattan courthouse where jurors were being chosen for the criminal trial of former President Donald J. Trump.

The man, who had lingered outside the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse earlier this week, doused himself with accelerant at around 1:35 p.m. in Collect Pond Park, across the street from the building. Onlookers screamed and started to run, and soon, bright orange flames engulfed the man. He threw leaflets espousing anti-government conspiracy theories into the air before setting himself on fire.

People rushed and tried to put out the flames, but the intensity of the heat could be felt from some distance.

After a minute or two, dozens of police officers arrived, running around and climbing over barricades to extinguish the blaze. The man was loaded into an ambulance and rushed to a hospital burn unit. He died on Friday night.

The New York Times

City officials identified the man as Max Azzarello, 37, of St. Augustine, Fla. Mr. Azzarello had appeared outside the courthouse on Thursday, holding a sign displaying the address of a website where the same pamphlets were uploaded. The top post of the website says, “I have set myself on fire outside the Trump Trial.”

Mr. Azzarello walked around Lower Manhattan earlier in the week, holding a sign on Wednesday critical of New York University at Washington Square Park before moving on Thursday to Collect Pond Park.

At the park on Thursday, Mr. Azzarello had held up various signs and at one point shouted toward a group of reporters gathered there, “Biggest scoop of your life or your money back!” One of his signs claimed that Mr. Trump and President Biden were “about to fascist coup us.”

In an interview that day, he said his critical views of the American government were shaped by his research into Peter Thiel, the technology billionaire and political provocateur who is a major campaign donor, and into cryptocurrency.

Mr. Azzarello said he had relocated from Washington Square Park because with the cold weather, he thought more people would be outside the courthouse.

“Trump’s in on it,” Mr. Azzarello said on Thursday. “It’s a secret kleptocracy, and it can only lead to an apocalyptic fascist coup.”

Mr. Azzarello arrived in New York City sometime after April 13, the police said, and his family in St. Augustine did not know about his whereabouts until after the incident. While Mr. Azzarello was recently in Florida, he had connections to the New York City area and worked for Representative Tom Suozzi during his 2013 campaign for Nassau County executive on Long Island.

A man at a Brooklyn address associated with a possible relative of Mr. Azarello’s declined to comment on Thursday.

Over the past year, however, Mr. Azzarello’s behavior appeared to become more erratic. He was arrested three times in 2023 on misdemeanor charges in Florida, and he posted online in August that he had just spent three days in a psychiatric hospital.

Later that month, while dining at the Casa Monica Hotel in St. Augustine, he threw a glass of wine at a framed autograph of former President Bill Clinton. He showed up to the hotel again, two days later on Aug. 21, stripped to his underwear and shouted profanities at guests while blasting music from a speaker.

Three days later, police arrested him for defacing and breaking signs belonging to several businesses. He took a pest control sign from the yard of one business that had warned passers-by to keep children and pets away for their safety. In comments to the police, he said that “the pest control company was there to exterminate children and dogs.”

His mug shot shows Mr. Azzarello sticking his tongue out.

In addition to his website, Mr. Azzarello was also active on social media, promoting anti-government literature on Instagram. Most of his online posts before the spring of 2022 were of his travels and his family, and he noted that his mother died in April 2022 from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

About a year later, he posted a photo of what appeared to be his Covid-19 vaccination card — defaced with the words “Super Ponzi” and the symbol for Bitcoin.

People who witnessed the fire said they were in disbelief as they saw Mr. Azzarello, who was in an area of the park reserved for supporters of Mr. Trump, toss the pamphlets into the air and then flames shoot toward the sky. Mr. Azzarello, who was wearing jeans and dark gray T-shirt, fell to the ground amid the fire.

Some of the pamphlets referred to New York University as a “mob front” and also mentioned former President George W. Bush, former Vice President Al Gore and the lawyer David Boies, who represented Mr. Gore in the 2000 presidential election recount. Another pamphlet contained anti-government conspiracy theories, though they did not point in a discernible political direction.

Most officers who responded to the fire on Thursday ran from the direction of the courthouse, which is a couple of hundred feet across the street; some struggled to immediately reach Mr. Azzarello because of steel barricades in the park.

Al Baker, a spokesman for the court system, said the trial schedule would not be affected, though one court officer had been taken to hospital because of the effects of smoke inhalation.

Fred Gates, 60, said he had been riding his bike through the park when he stopped to watch the Trump supporters and saw Mr. Azzarello getting ready to light himself on fire. Mr. Gates said he thought it was a prank or a performance until he saw the flames.

City officials stand at a lectern.

Another witness, Gideon Oliver, a civil rights lawyer, said he saw smoke rising from the park and a court officer rushing from a building carrying a fire extinguisher.

“When I saw and smelled the smoke I thought someone, I assumed one of the pro-Trump protesters, had lit a fire in the park,” Mr. Oliver said. “When I saw police and court officers running, I then thought it might have been a bomb.”

Mr. Azzarello stood tall as he poured the accelerant on himself and then held a flame at chest level. As people nearest him fled, others cried out as they realized what he was about to do.

Screams and shouts — though not from him — filled the air as the flames consumed him and he slowly collapsed.
