What is an Entertaining Speech?
An entertaining speech is designed to amuse the audience while delivering the message. These speeches are written to entertain the audience and make them laugh. Like other types of speeches , entertainment speeches should communicate a clear message. However, the manner of speaking is not the formal way and is slightly different from traditional styles.
Although entertainment and funny speeches follow the same speech format as other types of speeches, they can be really fun to write. People who have a fear of public speaking would also love to deliver an entertaining speech.
The entertainment speeches are delivered on specific occasions like entertaining debate competitions, a toast at a wedding, or an award acceptance speech , etc. Comedy films, theater plays, and comedy shows are a few examples of entertainment content.

How to Choose an Entertaining Speech Topic
When we say the word “entertainment,” we don’t refer to the ‘humor’ only but also the ‘drama’ . Therefore, you need to choose a topic for an entertaining speech that brings joy to the audience and intrigues their emotions.
Here are some basic tips from experts to choose the best topic for a funny and entertaining informative speech:
- Think of your interests and your inspiration so that you don’t get bored while delivering the speech. If that happens, your audience will lose interest immediately.
- Think of your audience and things that interest them. Choose a topic that is interesting for both of you, i.e., you and your audience.
- Conduct research and collect some humorous ideas that are unusual and unique
- Pick up a normal issue or subject and give it a dramatic twist .
- Tell a funny story about some personal experience.
- Laugh at, and ridicule institutions and organizations but do not offend.
- Ask what if? And show the possibilities until it becomes amusing.
- Decide what message you want to communicate with your speech.
If you use this checklist to choose a topic for an entertaining speech, you can easily deliver a serious message while making the audience laugh.

Entertaining speech topics are an engaging mix of humor, wit, and creativity designed to captivate audiences and hold their attention. These topics span various genres, like storytelling, humorous anecdotes, satirical commentary, or engaging trivia. They are light-hearted, often infused with funny elements and interesting insights to generate laughter and evoke interest. Crafting these topics involves understanding the audience’s tastes, the occasion’s nature, and the speaker’s unique style. The goal is to entertain and enlighten simultaneously, facilitating a memorable, enjoyable experience. Moreover, these topics add a dash of fun and frolic to any gathering, breaking a monotony of serious discourses. In essence, entertaining speech topics are about creating delightful conversational journeys, transforming routine speeches into delightful performances that engage, entertain, and educate.
What Is an Entertaining Speech Topic and Its Purpose
According to its definition, an entertaining speech topic is a specific subject that focuses on engaging an intended audience by providing enjoyment, humor, or fascination through an entire content presented. For example, the main purpose for selecting an entertaining speech topic is to captivate a target audience’s attention while offering a pleasurable and light-hearted experience (Robinson, 2023). Basically, common ideas involve humor, storytelling, or interesting anecdotes that are designed to amuse or entertain rather than inform or persuade. Further on, an overall effectiveness of an entertaining speech relies not just on a topic itself but also on a speaker’s delivery, tone, and ability to connect with an audience (Bullock et al., 2021). In principle, diverse entertaining themes can cover a wide range of subjects, including humorous life events, popular culture, or amusing reflections on everyday situations. Moreover, a key to successful delivery is to maintain a balance between entertainment and relevance, ensuring a speech remains engaging while appealing to critical interests of a target audience (Grieve et al., 2021). Hence, entertaining speech topics offer a brief escape from formal or serious settings, allowing an audience to relax and enjoy a content while also feeling emotionally engaged or amused.
How to Choose
Choosing a good entertaining speech topic requires a careful consideration of both audiences and speakers’ strengths. For example, a first step is understanding audience’s preferences, interests, and expectations (Carvalho, 2024). In principle, entertaining speech ideas that resonate with an audience’s sense of humor, experiences, or curiosities are more likely to engage and entertain them. Further on, students should select entertaining speech subjects they feel confident and passionate about, as this strategy will enhance a delivery and overall impact of an entire address (Heideman & Laury, 2021). As such, they should aim for ideas that allow for creativity, incorporating humor, stories, or clever observations. However, entertaining speech themes must remain appropriate for an occasion and setting, ensuring they fit an event’s tone and audience demographics (Franks, 2022). Basically, students should to include interactive elements or relatable content to maintain proper engagement. In turn, some steps for picking a good entertaining speech topic include:
- Know Your Audience: Consider your audience’s interests, demographics, and preferences to choose relatable and enjoyable ideas.
- Consider an Occasion: Select themes that suit an event’s tone and formality, ensuring an appropriateness for a friendly setting.
- Play to Your Strengths: Choose a subject you are passionate about and comfortable presenting, allowing for a more confident and engaging delivery.
- Focus on Humor or Storytelling: Opt for themes that allow for humor or personal stories, which are key elements in entertaining speeches.
- Ensure Relevance and Clarity: Select a relevant entertaining speech topic that is easy to follow and relevant, avoiding overly complex or unfamiliar subjects that might lose an audience’s attention.

Academic Level Difference
Academic level differences significantly influence a whole selection of entertaining speech topics because each level demands varying degrees of complexity, depth, and appropriateness. At a high school level, entertaining speech ideas focus on light-hearted, relatable subjects, such as humorous experiences, popular culture, or school-related anecdotes (Carvalho, 2024). Essentially, diverse themes are generally less formal and aim to keep an intended audience engaged through fun, accessible content. In contrast, college-level entertaining speech subjects tend to reflect a higher degree of sophistication, with a focus on critical thinking and an incorporation of humor or storytelling into intellectual discussions or observations about society (Franks, 2022). For graduate-level or professional audiences, these topics should be even more refined, balancing wit with intellectual substance. Moreover, entertaining speech themes may include satirical takes on industry trends, humorous reflections on academic life, or clever commentary on professional experiences (Robinson, 2023). Basically, students must always consider an audience’s familiarity with a subject matter and avoid over-complicating or oversimplifying a topic. Thus, higher academic levels require students to integrate a degree of professionalism in their entertaining speech topics, ensuring humor or entertainment elements align with a formality of an occasion while still engaging and captivating an audience.

How to Make a Speech Funny
Injecting humor into a speech transforms it from mundane to memorable. Begin with a strong foundation of funny persuasive speech ideas or funny argumentative speech topics. These topics naturally lend themselves to humor, making your job easier. Next, consider opening jokes for a speech. A well-placed joke at the beginning not only captures attention but also sets a lighthearted tone. However, balance is key. Mix humor with substance to maintain engagement without detracting from your message.
When exploring humorous speech ideas, aim for relatability. Jokes or anecdotes that resonate with your audience’s experiences significantly increase the impact of your humor. Additionally, for fun topics for an informative speech, choose subjects that are inherently amusing or have a quirky side. This approach keeps the audience intrigued and amused throughout. Remember, the essence of a funny speech lies in its ability to entertain while delivering a clear message. Keep it light, relevant, and engaging to leave your audience both informed and smiling.

Public Speaking Tips & Speech Topics
259 Interesting Speech Topics [Examples + Outlines]
Jim Peterson has over 20 years experience on speech writing. He wrote over 300 free speech topic ideas and how-to guides for any kind of public speaking and speech writing assignments at My Speech Class.
The most asked question I get almost every day from students is this:
What makes a topic interesting?
Well, the answer is simple. You have to like it yourself, the subject has to be appropriate to the rules of the assignment, to the audience and the setting of the meeting:
In this article:
How To Find An Interesting Topic
Best interesting speech topics, interesting persuasive speech topics, interesting informative speech topics, topics with outline.
1 – Look in magazines, journals, and newspapers for events.
Can We Write Your Speech?
Get your audience blown away with help from a professional speechwriter. Free proofreading and copy-editing included.
Current or historical, that does not matter at this point, both are okay – and recent engaging and exciting facts, and perhaps valuable information that attracts the attention.
Articles about subjects that interests you and that are comfortable for you to talk about are good indications.
2 – Jot down any possible idea that comes up for interesting speech topics. I always draft a short list for myself of candidate issues if I am contracted for a public speaking engagement.
And then I skip the ones that are too difficult and too complex to prepare and master in 8 to 10 minutes time.
3 – Review some online books on the subject for more detailed current information about your topic. Or go to a library and ask for books and reference articles about your subject.
Without exception, all librarians I know will help you sorting out the speechwriter subject with their advice and recommendations. For example you choose for an alluring pleasure physical activity or farming and countryside topic.
Try to understand how the author has covered it. What’s his structure? What points, information or arguments are the strongest? What examples and illustrations has she or he used?
4 – Peerless reliable statistics and new discoveries can help writing and refining.
Look for controversies, rare and strange opinions. What do you think of it? What do you want your audience to think of it?
5 – Think about related engaging interpretive hints to talk about. When you view your rough list, try to find new points, different angles of view or just turn your thoughts upside down. Look at the special aspects that surprise the listeners.
>>> For example try these 2 more detailed summary outlines with main points and subpoints. Use my sample structure to add or otherwise wipe steps and stages you do not need.
>>> In addition to these patterns, you find more ideas for outlined main points in my Minute Section (in the navigation menu bar right on your left of this portal page). Or move straight to sixty plus lineups for speechwriters.
That can be very enlighting for enhancing public discernment. They also can see , feel, or even taste and smell what you try to explain or demonstrate in a couple of minutes.
6 – Look for supporting and also for opposing opinions, plus interesting speech topics statements. Add visual aids where you want to emphasize or to give some prominence to an unimaginable point in your interesting topic idea.
7 – Watch news shows, history documentaries and debating programs – for example, the morning shows and the evening news. They are especially helpful for developing a rough list of wheedling brainstorms.
