You might be surprised at how much your answer to this question can say about you. The role model you choose for your role model essay is not nearly as important as your description of that person and the way you relate this back to yourself. Here are some principles to keep in mind when writing this essay.

• Choose someone with whom you have had a meaningful relationship. Who is your role model? Don’t pick a more important but distant figure. No one will be impressed if you choose, for example, the CEO of your company but have nothing to say about him beyond listing the credentials in his company profile. Note: There are some questions that allow you to identify a “hero,” and others that ask you to describe an ideal manager. In those cases you should alter your choice accordingly, but the below principles still apply.
• Express thoughtful admiration.  Glorifying your role model makes you sound naíve. Focus instead on describing the person in an insightful manner and explaining why you value what he or she represents. You might even have reason to differentiate yourself from your role model in specific ways, though the overall purpose should be to describe what you admire and want to emulate.
• Describe and illustrate specific qualities.  My role model essays should be accurate. Avoid relying on vague language that merely depicts your role model as “brilliant” or “compassionate.” Instead, aim for a more penetrating portrait that captures your role model’s complexities. Moreover, just because you’re not writing about yourself does not mean that you don’t have to back up your claims. Show your role model in detailed action to convey the qualities that he or she embodies.

• Tell stories.  Using specific anecdotes is the best way to achieve depth in your description. By describing the details of a particular episode, you can convey much more about a person than by listing any number of characteristics.
• Show the role model’s tangible influence on you.  The best way to demonstrate the importance your role model has played in your life is to recount changes you’ve made based on that person’s influence. Of course, you should not come across as a sycophant or a blind follower. But you can show how your role model provoked ideas that then initiated a course of action.

Descriptive Essay: My Role Models

Many people look to someone to serve as a model or motivator for their life. They want someone to look up to, who has good values and a sense of honor and integrity. Most people choose one person to act as their ‘guiding light’ for their life, but I am slightly different. I have chosen several. No one is perfect, after all, so I have a few people whose traits or deeds I admire. I think of them often and hope to live my life in a similar way.

My first role model has been with me since I saw his bronzed shoes in a museum when I was five. The shoes belong to Terry Fox. He’s a hero to an entire nation because he raced across Canada with one artificial leg in order to raise money for cancer research. He endured horrible weather, illness, physical pain, and other extreme hardships in order to meet his goal. I admire him for what he attempted, even though he did not succeed. Terry Fox had wanted to race across Canada, but did not make it more than a third of the way. He’s famous now, but was unknown at the time, so what he did was mostly in anonymity. But he never gave up. He had a goal and he worked toward it, no matter the end result.

My second role model is my best friend Rachel. I chose her because she is close to me. She is someone I can connect with on a daily basis, and watch as she muddles through life’s daily tribulations with as much honor and respect as she can muster. Has she undergone incredible hardships in her life? No. Not really. But she lives through the politics of every day adult life trying to be honest with herself and with others, avoiding gossip and being generous with people. Every time she buys me dinner, or spends time with my young niece, I’m reminded that people can be generous and caring.

The last person I look to as a role model is myself. I find that I do not always have to look outside myself for motivation and positivity. I have endured hardships in my life. I’ve lost family members to illness and stood up to defend myself from abuse. I live with an anxiety disorder and have to continually remind myself about various calming techniques. But I still stay positive and do my best every day. I can look back at things I’ve accomplished in my life and be proud. I can look at what I’ve overcome and realize that I am strong.

Role models are important. Life can be hard, with money woes and illness dragging us down. People need tangible reminders of the fact that strength and honor can triumph in rough circumstance. They need to be aware that every day people can be generous and caring. And people need to know that they, themselves, are brave and strong.

A child grows in an environment looking and learning at his parents and other family members. He also watches how his teachers and mentors teach the class. He learns from the elders playing sports with him. We all do the same and our psychological development takes place. Our thought process develops and we then focus on a personality that admires us the most. This personality is called a role model. We get immense inspiration from the role model we choose. Our personalities develop following the traits we admire in a person. This person can be your parent, your family member, or a celebrity.

Role Model Essay 

My role model is Charlie Chaplin. He is one of the greatest comedians and film producers of all time. Charles Spencer Chaplin, a brilliant child, who was born in the poor part of London on 16 th April 1889. His mother was suffering from a psychological disorder. His father died due to alcoholism. He was left in an abyss where his caretakers were not able to pay the rent as well. They changed rooms and were not able to eat every day. He developed a world of his own when his mother suffered from madness spells.

His mother supported his family by sewing clothes. Eventually, she could not afford to rent a sewing machine. His early days were spent with homeless children when his mother was treated in a hospital. Even if he belonged to a tragic background and lived a sad childhood, he never failed to make everyone laugh with his performance. He developed as an excellent actor, director, producer, and almost all kinds of skills needed to produce a silent movie. His best creations that still make people laugh and cry at the same time are City Lights, Modern Times, The Kid, A woman of Paris, The Gold Rush, etc.

He became a very famous actor admired by all. He directed, acted, edited, and produced most of the films. We can say he was a perfectionist in every sense. He even took a dig at Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Germany, and mocked him in his film ‘The Great Dictator’ released in 1940. He was so brave that no one was ready to fund, act, or release this movie that mocked the superpower. He did it taking it as a challenge and mocked the Fuhrer with his toothbrush moustache.

This is why I admire Charlie Chaplin. Even though he had a very sad childhood, he still managed to find food in his life. He was strong enough to stand tall and gave the world’s best comedic performance of all time. He also got the longest standing ovation in the Oscars. Everyone clapped and cheered when he received it for 11 minutes straight. Despite being clad with poverty and extreme hardship, he never went into the abyss of sadness. He recognized his talent and wanted to remain in the virtual happy world of comedy.

He is my favourite personality in the world due to his versatility and multiple talents. He said ‘A day without laughter is a day wasted’. He always wanted to see everyone smiling and laughing. He wanted to be the reason for everyone’s laughter and happiness. He also said ‘I always walk in the rain so that no one can see my crying.’ It is easy to imagine the pain behind this line but his act never revealed his sad life at all.

I came to know about his childhood and real-life stories when I read his autobiography. He represents every common man we know. He is our refined image. For him, life was a long story with a lot of comedy. His perspective of seeing life is what I admire. Charlie Chaplin had a life full of struggle and sufferings, still, he was able to bring smiles on millions of faces throughout his life. Everyone loved his work and at one phase of his life, he was at the peak of his life, where he signed many shows and films.

Charlie’s Booming Phase

He signed contracts with the mutual film corporation for a really huge sum to make 12 two-reel comedies. These were “The Floorwalker”, “The Fireman”, “The Vagabond”, “One A.M.” (a production in which he was the only character for the entire two reels with the exception of the inclusion of a cab driver in the opening scene), and many more such works.

The Phase of Independence

As we are already aware of his association with Mutual, the same association contract expired in 1917 when Charlie decided to establish himself as an independent producer for fulfilling his desire for expansion and leisure. He started working on planning for his own studio, which was situated in the residential section of Hollywood at La Brea Avenue. Charlie entered into a new agreement with the First National Exhibitor’s Circuit in 1918. His successive commercial venture was the production of the comedy dealing with the war. Shoulder Arms was released in the year 1918 at a most opportune time which led to the high popularity of Chaplin at the box office.

Charlie has created a deep impact on many lives and he has also acted as an inspiration to many of us. In 1966, he produced his last picture, “A Count from Hong Kong” for Universal Pictures, his only film that was in colour, starring Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando. Chaplin’s son Sydney has a major role in the films and three of Chaplin’s daughters have few parts in it.

The Impact He Made on the World and His Contribution to Arts and Society

Charlie Chaplin was a man who formed millions of smiles in the early 1900s. Despite the fact that his movies were silent films and also, in black and white, he put immense colour into everyone’s life. He managed to work his magic through actions and free minds as well as speak the minds of ordinary people, whether it is about the horrors of life as a soldier in the two World Wars or the dehumanization of work or about the wonderful sensations of love in “City of Lights”. He was not scared or bogged down to clearly show what he believed in.

His amazing sense of narration and subordinating the story with mere actions make him a great master of pictures. Charlie Chaplin can be described as a man who, despite great misfortunes, managed to transform the “nightmarish” situations that he experienced in silent comedy. He was a comedic icon among other actors and yet, he was the best. Coming from a poor background, he finally became a person whom everyone knows and loves. Such an impression he has made across the world that Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom knighted him as Sir Charlie Chaplin in 1975.

He expired at the age of eighty eight on 25th December 1977. He has left a deep impression on many lives and has set an example for many of us.

Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 at Qunu. Mandela is widely known for his charismatic leadership skills. His political career ambitions started while at university when he realized the unjust nature in which the African society was. The blacks were denied the due chances both economically and politically. This disappointed Nelson Mandela which triggered his ambitions to join politics to fight for his people.

Thesis Statement

Throughout his leadership period, Nelson Mandela demonstrated excellent leadership skills which went beyond the political role. He committed his whole life fighting for the rights of the South Africans who suffered from discrimination. As a political activist, Nelson Mandela fought for his people which led him to be a political prisoner. Nelson Mandela struggled until he became the first black president of South Africa. These achievements by Nelson Mandela make him qualify to be one of the greatest men who have ever lived in history.

Fight against Apartheid (Discrimination)

Mandela’s early days in politics coincided with very high levels of apartheid in South Africa. Mandela was very disappointed by the system since it was characterized by high levels of discrimination (Glad & Blanton, 1997). Apartheid was the main vice in South Africa which incited Mandela to engage in endless struggles.

Mandela has been imprisoned for about thirty years for opposing apartheid system in South Africa (Ryan, 2011). During the apartheid system, the whites oppressed the blacks through their discriminative policies. In 1944, Nelson Mandela became an active leader of the American National Congress (ANC). This was just his first move to fight for the people’s freedom.

South Africa’s apartheid system was one of the worst racism and discrimination scenarios that have ever taken place in the world. However, Mandela managed to oppose the system courageously and persistently despite of the threats by the white leaders (Lieberfeld, 2003).

Therefore, Mandela has shown excellent and selfless leadership which cannot be found in many leaders. Most leaders are driven by their own benefits but Mandela was determined to undergo any torture for the sake of his people. Through the African National Congress party, Mandela was determined to undergo any form of suffering for the sake of the South Africans blacks who were facing a lot of suffering at the hand of apartheid.

Political Activist (African National Congress)

In most cases, many political parties in Africa which fought for the rights of the blacks were characterized by violent activities. Therefore, it was expected that Mandela’s political party (ANC) would be even more violent bearing in the mind the extent to which apartheid had reached in South Africa. However, Mandela’s movement was characterized by non-violent protests. However, the younger nationalists became discouraged because of lack of progress in the initial stages (Ryan, 2011).

Together with his colleagues, Mandela believed that incorporating violence in their activities would trigger police’s brutality and this would bring suffering to South African blacks (Glad & Blanton, 1997). In case they engaged in violent activities, they new that the white leaders would take that opportunity to finish their people.

This was the main reason why they refrained from engaging themselves in violent demonstrations. According to Lieberfeld (2003), Mandela demonstrated peace in every step he made. His struggle against apartheid in earlier days was characterized by peace.

Mandela was one of those kinds of leaders who never gave up. He was rarely intimidated by any resistance to make his moves. He persistently moved forward. For instance, later on after joining ANC, Mandela decided to join the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) (Ryan, 2011). This is because ANC was making very little progress during that time. Due to his thirst to save his people from the chains of apartheid, Mandela joined this party as it was more vibrant than ANC. This group was composed of the members of ANC who were more militant.

In 1949, ANCYL organized strikes and boycotts across the country (Ryan, 2011). These actions were directed to force for changes in policies which oppressed the Africans in South Africa. In 1951, Nelson Mandela was elected as the head of this political party in the country. Soon after being elected the leader of this group, Mandela initiated a Defiance campaign which was aimed at triggering a massive resistance towards discriminative policies. This was his next move after their initial moves yielded little results.

Due to his perpetual resistance to the prevailing system and organizing of boycotts and strikes, Mandela was arrested in 1952 (Ryan, 2011). However, Mandela won that time as his sentence was suspended some time later.

However, he was neither allowed to attend any public gathering nor attend ANC meetings. These restrictions were aimed at minimizing his interactions with the public to avoid further incitation. However, Mandela’s journey did not stop hear as many would have thought. This encounter just boosted her determination to pursue his goals.

To defend the people who were persecuted in the apartheid system, Mandela opened a law which defended the convicts. Later, Mandela and some other leaders were charged of treason. This case was later dropped. However, most of Mandela’s time was wasted as he was sometimes forced to make many appearances before the court. Despite of these commitments, Mandela still continued to fight four the equality in South Africa.

Underground Movement

On realizing that non-violent resistance was not yielding any positive results, Mandela decided to adopt violence in his fight against apartheid. For instance, sixty nine people were killed while resisting for anti apartheid rule which restricted the movement of the blacks in South Africa.

This incident made Mandela to change his strategy of non-violent resistance to more harsh reaction. This is because the rate of discrimination was rising even after their efforts instead of falling. In connection to this, ANC commenced adopting armed resistance (Ryan, 2011).

After the banning of their party, Mandela with the support of other leaders formed an underground group. Through this group, Mandela and his colleagues targeted any official symbol of Apartheid and the government in their targets through sabotage. On seeing the extent to which apartheid had reached in South Africa, Nelson Mandela decided to travel across the African countries and Europe to seek support as well as learning the tactics of guerilla warfare (Ryan, 2011).

Therefore, Mandela realized the importance of the support from other countries in his struggle against apartheid (Glad & Blanton, 1997). Unfortunately, Mandela was arrested soon after going back to his country after completing his mission. He was charged for his involvements with the underground group and for moving out side the country without a legal prescription. This cost, Mandela five years in prison.

Despite of these sufferings which Mandela underwent during his struggle against discrimination towards the black South Africans, his stand was never shaken. During his trial, Mandela confirmed not to be intimidated by anything from his fight against apartheid (Ryan, 2011). He also explained the main aims of the newly formed group Umkhonto we Sizwe. Mandela together with his group narrowly escaped execution during these trials (Ryan, 2011). However, they were given a life imprisonment.

In 1964, Mandela was sent to Robben Island where he was supposed to spend the rest of his life according to the judgment. Later, he was kept confined alone in fear that he will intimidate his colleagues. All this suffering never shook Mandela’s ambitions. His people went to the extent of referring to him as a silent suffering martyr (Ryan, 2011).

Road to Freedom and Accomplishments

Later in 1984, negotiations for Mandela’s release started on condition that he will allow reallocation of South African blacks to specific places. However, Mandela rejected all these offers. This displays a strong character of determined and selfless leader who was ready to sacrifice himself for the sake of his people. This clearly shows that Mandela was not after any material gain in his struggle for equality.

Under the pressure of the international community and the black South Africans, the head of the National Party F.W. de Klerk softened his stand (Ryan, 2011). Restrictions on ANC were lifted and most laws which were discriminative were dissolved. After continued pressure, Mandela was released in 1990.

Soon after being released, Mandela continued with his fight for freedom. He was engaged in negotiations with de Klerk form ma democratic government. In 1993, Mandela was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize (Ryan, 2011). This was just three years after being released.

Through Mandela’s efforts, South African got the first chance to vote freely without impediments which mostly favored the whites. Mandela was finally elected the president of South Africa in 1994 under the ANC party. On becoming, the president of South Africa, Mandela came up with strategies to unite people and also released those imprisoned during the apartheid system through amnesty (Ryan, 2011).

From there, Mandela has received various awards for his good work to the community. For instance, he received Presidential Medal of Freedom from the former United States president Bush. Mandela was also determined in the fight against AIDs as well as care for the AIDs victims.

From this discussion, it can clearly be seen that Mandela is really a leader to be emulated. Throughout his leadership, he has demonstrated courage, humility, patience, perseverance, and determination, a combination of character traits which is very rare in many leaders. He persistently fought against discrimination in South Africa despite of the difficulties he faced. Mandela faced police brutality and imprisonment for about thirty years but was never discouraged from pursuing his goals.

This discussion has also indicated that Mandela opted for violence after the peaceful demonstrations proved futile. This indicates that he was a humble reader who looked beyond the leadership boundaries. He considered every move he made taking into consideration the end results. Although he had the power to use violence from beginning of his struggle, he avoided that.

Mandela’s leadership teaches us that one should never be discouraged from pursuing his or her goals despite of the conditions through which they pass. We should also not lose hope for whichever time period this may take. Mandela spent many years in jail but he never buried his hope.

Dear Kerry Ann,

As a new tenure-track professor, I like the idea of building a mentoring network instead of searching for one or two guru mentors in my department. I have been working to complete various aspects of your mentor map , but I keep getting stuck on the role models part. I’m not sure how to think about academic role models as an African-American scholar, because there are so few women of color on my campus.

Am I thinking about this too narrowly? Why do I need role models as part of my mentoring network? And how can I find role models when there is so little diversity at my university?

Ruminating on Role Models

Dear Ruminating,

I’m pleased to learn that you’re consciously and intentionally building a large network of mentors. You are not alone in feeling confused about the role models segment of the mentor map. When I’ve had the opportunity to lead workshops on mentor mapping, it’s one of the areas that consistently cause faculty members to pause.

Participants typically have one of three responses: 1) they have no role models and struggle to come up with a single name, 2) they have many people they consider role models and can’t stop gushing about how awesome they are, or 3) they believe all __________ (fill in the blank with people like them) are role models and it’s counterproductive to name anyone specifically.

So let me clarify what I mean by a role model, why it’s important for you to identify several and how to go about identifying them.

Understand the Value of Role Models

I have simple criteria for identifying role models:

• They are alive (i.e., living, breathing humans, not historical figures, fictional characters, fantasy creatures or action heroes).
• They are people who are living their academic life in a way to which you aspire.
• You could (theoretically) contact them for a targeted conversation.

I suggest these criteria because you want your role models to be real people who embody your definition of success -- not your department, university or discipline’s version of success. Why? Because you will get the most from them by learning what they do, how they do it and the types of choices they’ve made along the way.

For underrepresented scholars, role models have the power to open up previously unimagined possibilities. For example, when I was an undergraduate student, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. But it wasn’t until I encountered Professor Geneva Smitherman that the synapses in my brain formed the thought “I could be a professor.” Nobody ever told me I couldn’t be a professor, but I completed four years of college before I encountered an African-American female professor.

Dr. G (as she was known to her students) wasn’t any ordinary professor. She was brilliant, accomplished and fly, and she unapologetically identified as a scholar-activist. Just being in the presence of this woman -- braids flying and brilliance flowing -- rocked my world. Her presence opened my sense of what was possible for me . In other words, the fact that she existed meant that somebody like me could be a professor.

Just seeing her speak would have been enough, but I also became her undergraduate research assistant. Working for her directly helped me understand the ins and outs of professorial life, including how intellectual projects develop over time and how a scholar-activist manages her time between the campus and the community. Her generosity in sharing her path and encouraging me to pursue a Ph.D. taught me the most powerful lesson of all: I could do that, too!

This is why I encourage you to include role models as part of your mentoring network. Saying “everyone is a role model” or “I don’t have role models” stops people from identifying and claiming their aspirations. Both responses keep a person isolated in their own status quo. If nobody is doing anything even remotely related to what you aspire, then your goals will often feel impossible and unattainable, and may even be unrealistic for a full-time academic. And while there’s some truth to “every __________ is a role model,” I would consider both the validity of that statement as well as how saying that lets academics off the hook from naming what they truly desire.

Identify Who Your Role Models Are (and Why)

As an early-career faculty member, it’s important to know that the big things you aspire to can be done and that you can do them. So ask yourself, “Who is living their academic life in a way that I aspire to lead my own?” If you could imagine yourself operating at your full potential -- in the direction you want and in a way that would be fulfilling and amazing -- what would that look like?

If you’re drawing a blank or thinking, “Everyone is a role model,” then challenge yourself to get highly specific. And this summer is a great time to make a project of identifying your role models. You could journal your answers to the above questions. You could brainstorm with friends, family and/or colleagues. Or you could ask other people who their role models are for inspiration.

I recently asked a group of women scholars of color to name their role models as part of a master-class series that the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity is planning, and we received a list of nominations that is sure to spark your imagination, inspire your thinking about role models and help you get far more specific.

Once you have a few role models in mind, take time to learn about their career (i.e., read their faculty bio, review their CV and/or Google them). Depending on who they are, you may find articles that have been written about their career or interviews of them. That is incredibly valuable information because, as important as it is to identify role models, it’s even more important to learn how they got to where they are today.

Once you have identified several role models, you could contact them directly and ask for a brief conversation on a specific question. I melt whenever someone emails me and says, “You’re one of my role models because __________ and __________. Could I schedule a 20-minute call with you to learn how you __________?” I’m not saying every role model will respond, but if even one does, it’s worth the effort. And the added bonus is that you will surely make someone’s day by letting them know they are a role model of yours.

Don’t Limit Your Role Models

I don’t want to leave the impression that you should have one, and only one, perfect role model. Instead I encourage you to choose a variety of role models. And they don’t all have to be just like you demographically. In fact, it’s important to have a diverse array of role models that exemplify various aspects of your aspirations.

I also recommend you select both near and far role models. In other words, select some role models who are just two steps ahead of where you are now (your peers), as well as those who are far ahead of you (senior faculty members). Typically, your peer role models have done something specific that you admire (won a large grant, had amazing media coverage of their first book or had three kids while on the tenure track) and they tend to be more readily available to chat about their process. Those farther ahead on the path may embody the academic life you want to grow into more fully. Personally, I don’t hesitate when I have the opportunity to say, “You are one of my academic role models because __________.”

I hope it’s clear that you don’t have to restrict your role models to your own institution. At times, you may have an abundance of role models on your campus. I once was a faculty member in a department with Barbara Ransby and Beth Richie , and the chancellor was Paula Allen Meares ! But at other times, you may find yourself without any role models on the campus. That’s OK. Just appreciate when you have them close and be expansive in your thinking when you don’t.

Identifying and connecting with role models is ultimately about you becoming the best version of your definition of success -- not becoming a mini version of somebody else. You are already a role model for your students (whether you know it or not). So why not start identifying people who are succeeding in a way you aspire to -- and then learn (directly or indirectly) how they got where they are today?

It’s always good to find a role model in the same category of work you love to do or thinking of doing it. As for me, my Role model is Sir. A R Rehman as he motivates me to become a good musician that i always wanted to be. He is a good human being, He is an amazing artist, a perfect celebrity and fantastic Musician. His music always makes me feel something that I can never think of. So he and his music always motivates me to become a good musician. And so after getting influenced by him, I thought of learning guitar and music. So for me he is my role model as he makes me focus on what I love to do and also gives me motivation to achieve and become like him. He works really hard to make music, write good songs and write notations of every song and that’s why we love to hear his music and he became one of the best and costliest musicians in the world. My only dream is to meet my Role model.

Every individual has different role models, it can be a celebrity, it can be a politician, it can be a doctor, or any family member. Always follow a role model from whom you can adopt all good things in life, always follow a person who follows his or her passion in life. Never follow a role model who always does bad things in life and always try to demotivate people with their acts.

For me a role model is someone who helps you to turn your dreams into reality, who always pushes you hard to become the best in what you do or what you want to do. I like people who think about their passion and beliefs. Role model is someone who will motivate you to always do what you believe in. So as I said earlier in my essay Sir A. R Rehman always motivates me, inspires me to believe in music and become one like him. So if you like music follow some musician, If you like acting follow some actor or actress, if you like to become a doctor or a Cop or anything just follow the person according to it.

Role model should have a leadership standard and should be so confident that his positivity can inspire thousands of people. He should be a kind of person with a golden heart who can communicate with people very softly and this will make him a good personality and role model.

It’s good to find a role model in your family too. As every family member plays an important role in life. Your father, your mother, your elder siblings, anyone can become your role model. Father always motivates you to become responsible, always motivates you to achieve goals and always pushes you hard to reach the destination that you dreamt of. Mother is someone who inspires you to become a good human being with helping nature and caring without anything in return, who does anything to keep the whole family happy. Siblings are the one from whom you can learn so many things while growing up and maybe chances are you too can become what he or she wants to become.

So always try to find role models with good qualities and a good influenced mind to motivate people to become like them. So in conclusion there are many people with different role models but for me i always want to become a musician and i will try my best to follow Sir A R Rehman and become a great personality and good musician like him.

My Role model is my father. He’s the only earning member in the family. I want to be like him when I grow up. He’s sincere, disciplined and hardworking. He always encourages me to become whatever I want to and also guides me how to reach there. He takes care of my family needs as well.
