The digestive system of a camel allows it to survive on fibrous feeds of low-quality nutrients. Camels are browser animals, which can feed on easily digestible diets. Camels do not require a lot of energy like other ruminants. In addition, they also have effective systems for recycling nutrients.

Camels can also engage in physical activities like racing at high speed just like other animals. They have advantages based on low energy requirements, supply of glucose, low need for oxygen, and dependence on muscles that rely on aerobic metabolism.

This essay focuses on the nutritional requirements of a camel in order to win the prize during a race.

Camel racing is a popular game in the Middle East. Camels usually cover distances of five to 40 kilometers. Naturally, camels do not run. Instead, the pace can sustain “average speeds of 35 to 40 km/hour” (Kempton, 2007). They also have the ability to run at a speed above 40 km/hour. Nevertheless, they experience the challenge of exhausting easily.

Kempton argues that camels are pseudo-ruminants, which have the capacity to race at similar speeds to horses, for longer distances, and longer periods (Kempton, 2007).

Camels operate in dry and harsh environments, which have allowed them to digest most of the foods than other ruminants. Browsing enables a camel to select feeds of high quality. However, Ellard suggests that there is a lack of sufficient data on camel nutrition (Ellard, 2000). As a result, most data come from studies of other ruminants (Wilson, 1989).

The dry matter intakes of camels are usually lower than other ruminants. Camels’ consumption of body weight in the form of dry matter is 1.7 percent. This is lower than in horses and cattle, which consume above three percent. About 70 percent of dry matter requirements for camels are roughage. Camels have high rates of digestibility. The ability of camels to digest a lot of roughage is due to the existence of micro-flora. Micro-flora can facilitate the digestion of roughage and enhance the recycling of urea.

Camels need balanced diets throughout the year. The diet should consist of protein, oil, fiber, carbohydrate, and other energy-giving foods. Roughage is the main source of diet for camels. It mainly comes from fresh alfalfa. Camels get most of their energy from barley. However, barley may subject them to indigestion, dysfunction of the rumen, and colic (Bhattacharya et al, 1988).

According to Manefield and Tinson, a proper diet for a racing camel should consist of “10 kg of alfalfa tops, three to four kg of soaked whole barley, one kg of dates, two liters of fresh milk, hay, electrolyte, vitamin, and mineral supplements” (Manefield and Tinson, 1997).

Based on the digestive system of camels, energy foods do not readily provide immediate energy needed for muscular activities during the race. Camels also cannot maintain vigorous muscular activities for long. Thus, the main issue is to feed camels to generate sufficient energy needed for vigorous racing activities.

Tropical oils readily provide the energy needed in a race. These may include coconut oils, which are rich in fatty acids. Fatty acids readily get into the digestive system and provide energy during metabolism.

The aim of feeding a camel is to enable it to perform fast like a horse. This implies that camels must feed on digestible energy that can supplement energy from roughage to allow them to engage in high-intensity activities like racing. Highly digestible energy comes from grains and digestible fibers. However, these cause indigestion and temperament in camels. There are suggestions to use dietary starch, which consists of digestible fiber, and oil feeds (Kempton, 2007).

Camels in the race need the energy to compensate for vigorous competitions, which demand high amounts of energy within a short time. Thus, the energy supplied must yield high levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Such activities make camels demand a continuous supply of energy to maintain muscle activities. ATP is the only source of energy for muscle performance.

Oils provide the best source of energy for feeding camels. This is because oils can eliminate cases of metabolic disorders arising from grain feeds. However, not all oil products have similar tendencies. Oils with a long-chain composition such as maize, soybean, and canola also have abilities to disrupt metabolic activities in camels. Lymphatic can slowly digest and absorb these oils and transport them to the liver for metabolism. In this regard, such sources of oil energy are not the best for providing energy for racing.

On the other hand, saturated oils like coconut oils do not result in metabolism cases among camels and other ruminants. These because such oils contain low levels of free fatty acids (FFA). In addition, coconut oils have medium fatty acids (MCFA) that go directly to the liver through blood systems. Thus, such oil feeds are responsible for the necessary energy camels need to win a race.

After the race, camels should take feeds with lipid in order to compensate for energy lost during the race. These are mainly carbohydrate foods, which provide the best balance for lactate metabolism and accumulation of lactic acid (Kempton, 2007).

A camel is an animal with one or two humps on its back. To find food and water in the desert is hard. People and most animals find it difficult to survive there. But the camel is born to live in the desert. They are found in many dry and desert countries. It can stay alive in the harsh desert climate and it can help the people to live there too. They store fat and nutrients in their humps and can go for long periods without eating or drinking. Camels are used for carrying people and loads. Camels are of two kinds: the dromedary of India, the Middle East and northern Africa has only one hump . The Bactrian camel of central Asia has two humps. Both can go for long periods with little food or water by living off the fat of their humps and whatever desert plants they can find. When a camel does reach water at an oasis, it can easily drink as much as 114 litters (25gallons) in just ten minutes.

The camel is an important form of transport in deserts. It can travel more than 40 kilometres (25 miles) through the desert in a day with a 100-kilogramme (220-pound) load on its back. The people who live in the desert eat dried camel meat, which is an important source of protein. A camel’s hump fat is melted to be used as butter and its thick milk is a good source of energy on long desert journeys. The dried camel dung is used as fuel for cooking and boiling water. Moreover, the soft-haired skin of cancel is used to weave clothes, blankets and even tents.

Camel is a very strange animal. It is not of Indian origin. It traveled in the 4th century B.C. through the Khyber Pass along with the Greek invaders and slowly settled down here. Camels are commonly found in the desert areas of India.

A camel has four legs, two eyes, a tail, and a hump on its back. Its lips are broad and drooping outside with which it can eat the thorny cactus plants. It has 34 teeth. It can close its nostrils when there is a violent storm in the desert to protect itself. Its feet are paddy and they help to walk faster in the sand.

Camels aren't an animal most people associate with the vast plains of the United States. But the camel has a long, mostly forgotten history in this country. At NPR,  Wade Goodwyn reports that, up until the end of the Civil War, camels were a key part of the United States military strategy.

It all started in the 1850s, when the first American settlers started moving west. Their horses and mules weren't cut out for the long, dry treks between water sources, and many settlers realized that they needed a different animal. General Jefferson Davis shipped in camels, Doug Baum, a camel-trekker in Texas, told Goodwyn:

"The U.S. actually sent a sailing ship, the USS Supply, twice. And they bought camels in the modern countries of Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and what's now Turkey," Baum says. Eventually, hundreds of camels would be in use in the Big Bend by the Army and private owners. What happened to them all? After the Civil War, everything that the Confederate traitor Davis had touched was scrubbed away — and that included the Army's camels. The railroads finished them off. By the 1870s, they were mostly gone.

Blood! Fur! Harvard’s Latest Nightmare: Mice

When a pro-Palestine encampment went up in Harvard Yard last month, the dean of students sent out an e-mail warning the campers that they faced punishment. The encampment, he wrote, was disrupting the residents of freshman dorms as they studied for finals. The Harvard Crimson found otherwise. “ Freshmen Say Noise From Harvard Yard Encampment Not Disruptive, ” a headline read. The paper did, however, find a different source of disturbance: “ ‘Like a Horror Movie’: Freshmen Complain About Mice in Dorms. ”

“They sound like this,” Diane Sun, a prospective social-studies major from Seattle, said the other day, tapping her nails on the arm of a chair to mimic the mice that she hears skittering across her floor at night. She was sitting in the Yard, wearing a camel-colored coat and gray New Balances. Her first year on campus had already included billboard trucks plastered with students’ faces, billionaire-backed offensives against the university’s president, and, now, the fracas over the encampment. Of the protesters, Sun said, “They’re just out and about studying, painting, doing things like that. I’ve never heard anybody complain.” She added, “I’ve definitely heard a lot of people complain about mice.”

Somehow, Sun had made it through the fall without seeing a single mouse in her dorm, Hollis Hall, a fortresslike building that once housed George Washington’s troops. But this spring, after months of teasing friends in “mouse nests” like Straus and Canaday, Sun, returning to Hollis after class, saw a floor mate crouched outside the building in distress. “Did you forget your I.D.?” Sun asked. Then she smelled the peppermint oil—well known in Hollis as a D.I.Y. repellent. The mice had come for them at last.

Rodents are a fixture around Harvard, like the news crews during the run-up to President Claudine Gay’s resignation. The Crimson , 1939: “ MICE INUNDATION TROUBLES GRADUATE TEACHING SCHOOL. ” February 11, 1980: “ Winthrop Students Decry Mouse Population Boom .” March 7, 1989: “ RATS IN YOUR DINING HALL. ” (“I don’t know what poison the exterminator feeds them, but they just keep getting bigger.”) In “Mahalia Mouse Goes to College,” a picture book by the Harvard alum John Lithgow, a precocious rodent foraging around Dunster House ends up in a student’s backpack and gets transported to a physics lecture. (Four years later—after “recitals and plays, Glee club and squash, a brief square-dancing phase”—she earns a bachelor-of-science degree.) “It’s almost a Harvard tradition,” Sun said.

She headed up to her dorm room—an impressively messy second-floor double with dark wainscoting, a nonworking fireplace, and plenty of hiding spots for stealthy vermin—to give a tour of the murine front lines. She pointed out snap traps in her closet, under her roommate’s dresser, and by their mini-fridge.

Sun isn’t especially squeamish. In high school, she recited an original poem about scaling a carp (“its gills should be stark red—the intrusion of fate into viscera”) for Jill Biden, at the White House. But the extermination efforts have got to her. She recently found a dead mouse in one of the traps. “I couldn’t take a nap that day,” she said. “I felt it looking at me.” A classmate had to kill a maimed mouse using a bottle of mouthwash as a cudgel. Sun and a friend once spent an hour using Lysol wipes to clean blood and fur off the floor.

Sun has seen a live mouse only once, when she and her roommate were awakened at night by squeaking. “I turned on my flashlight and we saw it run,” she said. “It had been eating something—probably the snacks in my roommate’s backpack, which the mouse later shat in.” They called Harvard Yard Operations and busied themselves with preventive measures. They plugged up holes in the heating grate and threw out their supply of instant noodles.

Some upperclassmen are inured to the vermin. Maia Patel Masini, a junior in Kirkland House, has seen a mouse in the cafeteria trying to drink from the nozzle of a milk dispenser. “They’re honestly really cute from afar,” she said. Harvard Yard Operations keeps a Mice F.A.Q.s guide online, but Sun and her friends don’t consider it particularly helpful: “It’s literally, like, ‘Some people find mice to be a very rewarding part of Harvard!’ ” The Philosophical Musings section links to a YouTube video of the linguist Steven Pinker reading from the children’s book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.”

To test whether the mice were still in residence, Sun’s roommate recently set out a cracker before bed; she was relieved to find it intact the next morning. But within a few days—shortly before the administration and the protesters negotiated an end to the encampment—the roommates found a tattered Mr. Goodbar wrapper behind a floor lamp. A mouse had left it. Sun explained, “We don’t eat that kind of chocolate.” ♦

Two renovated apartments in the Gothic Quarter, and a one-bedroom unit in a historic building in the Dreta de l’Eixample.

A redesigned two-bedroom apartment close to cafes, museums and landmarks..

This newly rebuilt two-bedroom apartment is in an 1860 building in the Old City’s Gothic Quarter, with sidewalk cafes and tapas bars lining labyrinthine streets. Medieval landmarks include the remains of the Roman wall, Barcelona City Hall and the ancient Jewish quarter, including parts of the former Major Synagogue, which predates the 1391 anti-Jewish riots. The apartment is also close to the Picasso Museum, at the heart of the restored Berenguer d’Aguilar Palace. The Moco Museum is next door in the 16th-century Palacio Cervelló.

For oysters, octopus or paella, Els Quatre Gats, a cafe founded in 1897, is tucked down a side street. A haven for modernist artists, the cafe hired Pablo Picasso for his first commissioned work in the early 1900s, designing the menu’s front cover.

Sant Josep market, better known as the voluminous “La Boqueria,” is a five-minute walk along Las Ramblas, which is lined with stalls selling flowers and food. The closest metro stop is Drassanes line 3, just off Las Ramblas in Barcelona’s Old City. The bus at Placa de Catalunya is a minute from the apartment.

Indoors: Mikel Irastorza, an interior designer known internationally for his eclectic and colorful style, recently redesigned this newly air-conditioned two-bedroom, two-bath apartment.

The open living, dining and kitchen area has 11-and-a-half-foot ceilings with grayish exposed beams and Catalan vaults painted a soft turquoise. Neutral ceramic stoneware covers the floor. Richly toned Modernist Catalan tiles in a rectangular rug-like pattern punctuate the floor in the living room seating area.

The contemporary kitchen island has a burnt-orange Silestone quartz countertop and facade, light wood cabinetry, integrated appliances and pendant lighting. Camel-colored rectangular porcelain tiles cover a side wall and the backsplash.

Down the hall, the en suite primary bedroom opens to a dressing room, a bathroom with a large glass-enclosed shower and a wall-mounted floating vanity. A tiled full bath, laundry room and storage room are across the hall.

The apartment is being sold furnished, including a reproduction of Picasso’s 1907 “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” that hangs in the dining area. Picasso was inspired by five prostitutes from a brothel at the time on Carrer Avinyó, where the apartment also is.

Outdoor space: French doors in the living-dining area open to four Juliet balconies with decorative iron railings. Two more balconies are off the primary bedroom; the second bedroom has a single balcony.

Costs: The annual property tax is $645. Maintenance of the building’s stairs and other common areas costs $215 quarterly.

A one-bedroom apartment with beamed ceilings, whitewashed brick walls and a rustic kitchen..

This one-bedroom, one-bath apartment is in a historic building in the Dreta de l’Eixample, a district built on a grid extending northeast from the old city. The building is close to the Plaça de Catalunya and Arc de Triomf, originally the main access gate for the 1888 Barcelona World’s Fair, and the 77-acre Parc de la Ciutadella.

Dreta de l’Eixample’s city blocks are home to modernist architectural treasures, including Antoni Gaudí’s La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. The neighborhood is a shopping hub, with high-end boutiques, art galleries, design studios, hotels, cultural activities and restaurants including the eclectic Trafalgar by Casa Lolea. The district is also residential, with semi-pedestrian streets, small passages lined with rows of English-style houses, and tranquil public parks. Public transportation links include buses, trains and the subway. The L1 Metro line, connected throughout Barcelona, is steps from the apartment.

Indoors: A Catalan-style vaulted and beamed ceiling and whitewashed brick wall run through the living-dining room and adjacent office and sitting area. Light streams through French doors topped by transom windows to either side of a working fireplace dividing the living and dining spaces.

The kitchen has a modern yet rustic open design, with white subway tile on one wall, wood cabinets, a built-in microwave and a butcher block counter on a center island with a contemporary range hood over the cooktop. A second island has a stainless steel sink and a dishwasher. There is also a washer and dryer in the unit.

In the bedroom, a brick wall is punctuated by French doors. An oak-paneled wall separates the sleeping area from the dressing room built-ins on the other side. The renovated bathroom, with an oversized shower, mixes white subway and black ceramic tiles. A single vanity has a white basin and drawers underneath.

Outdoor space: The French doors open to dual balconies with decorative metal railings. A third balcony is off the bedroom.

A renovated three-bedroom apartment with turn-of-the-century details in a vintage 1900 building.

This three-bedroom apartment is on a cobblestone street at the edge of the Gothic Quarter, Barcelona’s historic core, and trendy El Born. The soaring spires and ornate detailing of the Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça del Rei and the Gran Teatre del Liceu Opera House remain among the medieval and Renaissance buildings juxtaposed with modern-art galleries, artisan shops and trendy boutiques. Pubs and Catalan restaurants populate the neighborhood’s narrow, winding alleys. Koy Shunka, a Japanese restaurant next to the cathedral, is among several Michelin-starred restaurants. The haute cuisine Hofmann Hospitality School store sells artisanal pastries.

Nestled between the port, Mediterranean Sea and neighboring Eixample, the area is also connected to the rest of Barcelona by metro, bus and taxis. Architect Antoni Gaudí’s fanciful modernist Park Güell, about three miles away, is a 25-minute ride via the L4 subway or H6 bus.

Indoors: This three-bedroom, two-bath apartment is one of two on the second story of a four-story vintage 1900 building. Renovated 10 years ago, it has turn-of-the-century details including woodwork, mosaic glass and exposed wood ceiling beams.

The entry has a checkered black-and-white tile floor. Wood flooring lines a hallway with built-in shelves leading to a U-shaped kitchen with shaker-style oak cabinets. A wineglass rack hangs above a marble dining counter, which opens to a living-dining room with a natural white stone fireplace on one wall.

Mosaic glass doors open to the sleeping quarters, which have mosaic-tiled flooring. A double bedroom to the left has a vintage crystal chandelier. Across the hall is a full bath. The primary suite at the end of the hallway has a free-standing cast-iron bathtub in the bedroom. To one side, there is an antique wash basin, shower and lavatory.

Outdoor space: Off a hallway between bedrooms is a balcony with space for a bistro table and two chairs.

Costs: The annual municipal property tax is about $647. Monthly maintenance fees fluctuate depending on the building’s needs and expenses.
