The Key to Choosing the Right Career

  • Heidi Grant

It’s not passion, but whether you’re more motivated to play offense or defense.

Choosing a career path (or changing one) is, for most of us, a confusing and anxiety-riddled experience. Many will tell you to “follow your passion” or “do what you love,” but as Cal Newport argues in So Good They Can’t Ignore You , this is not very useful advice. When I graduated from college, I liked lots of things. But love? Passion? That would have been seriously overstating it.

What Is a Career Essay?

A career essay is a text people write to detail their goals or plans for the future. In this essay, people talk about the career they want in the future and the things they have achieved so far. People often ask you to write a career essay when you send an application letter for a scholarship or submit your resume for a job.

How To Write a Rousing Career Essay

You should write your career essay seriously because it might be a deciding factor for your future. That said, in writing your essay, there are a lot of things to consider and a process you need to follow. Your end goal in writing your essay is to convince people that you are determined to walk the talk and make the things you wrote in your descriptive essay to reality.

1. Devise an Engrossing Title

The first thing to think about when writing an essay is coming up with an attention-grabbing title. When people read your essay, they pay the most attention to your title. Also, another benefit of coming up with your title first is that it will serve as a guide for you for the whole essay.

2. Introduce With a Hook

After devising a title, deliver the next blow with an introduction that piques their curiosity. To do that, begin your essay with a hook. Your hook can be a quote, a question, or you can even provide a statistic. If your introduction is good enough, it will secure the engagement of your readers.

3. Organize Your Ideas

Writing an essay is like taking your readers for a ride. You need to set the vibe and organize the flow of your thoughts. Don’t start too strong it might make the rest of your essay bland. You need to properly build up the development of excitement and make sure the order of your ideas makes sense.

4. Polish Your Essay

Finalize your essay by proofreading it. When people talk about their passion, they tend to talk too much and include several unnecessary things. Make sure not to do that. Omit all the details that don’t contribute to the overall impact of your reflective essay. Also, don’t forget to review your text for grammatical errors.

Why is career planning important?

People hustle every day to reach their dream careers. Having a target career gives you a direction and sets your path. Planning your career is essential because being indecisive about it might negatively impact your life. Not having a fixed goal is like not having an end destination. Preparing for it would also make your career action plan achievable.

What is a career genogram?

A career genogram traces back an individual’s family tree and examines the career timeline they pursued. The scope of this genogram reaches the grandparents, extended family, and even the person’s close friends. This graphic representation is helpful when a person has a hard time deciding about his or her career development plan .

What is career assessment?

Career assessment is the process of identifying what career would work best for you. Most assessments are in the form of a questionnaire . It includes questions about your interests, your skills, your hobbies, and your strengths. These are some examples of questions that would help assess your future career. The result of your career assessment might give you ideas on what path to take.

The moment people read your career essay, they often rate how likely you are to succeed. Show them a piece of your mind that would erase all their doubts about your success. They say manifesting works wonders, so manifest the future that you want best by composing a rousing career essay.

It goes without saying that to choose the right career path is, probably, one of the most difficult and fateful decisions, one has to take in his or her life. The difficulty is that nobody will give you any instructions or a guidebook on how to choose the right career path without any curves. It is a decision that a person has to make himself or herself. To choose the right career path, it’s important to understand what is your cup of tea and what’s not. Not many people can boast of the fact that they knew what they would be doing since childhood or when choosing a university. As far as I am concerned, at the moment, I'm doing Dean's Scholarship at Drexel University, Philadelphia PA, with Finance as major. As you can understand, I don’t belong to this minority group of lucky people either. So, how did I get involved into the finance area? In college my major was electrical engineering and this choice definitely wasn't based on a well-reasoned decision. I simply was good at Math and Physics and at that very moment, I didn't know what to do in my life and applying to a college with engineering as major seemed to me very attractive. Of course, I went on different co-ops but, unexpectedly, it turned out that engineering pace is too slow for me. At the same time, I started investing the money I earned. By and by I started to feel a great interest in economy and investing. I had CNBC app on my smartphone to have a quick access to latest financial information or breaking business mood in a real-time mode, to keep track with the stock market on regular basis. I felt so passionate about asset classes and their correlation. It's always fascinated me, how oil drop has such an impact on the global market, for instance. Having understood my interests and in what professional area I would like to develop myself, I took an opportunity to get employed as Market Services Analyst at PJM Interconnection. My activities among others were mostly related to reporting, e.g. I created reports on variance analysis and financial key performance indicators to be used by senior leadership in evaluating PJM's 12-months strategic plans and projects. Afterwards, for a certain period, I had some duties at Drexel University Endowment Fund and parallelly was CEO and Co-founder of Srockjock LLC, Philadelphia PA. StockJock (www.stockjock.co) was a fantasy stock market game. It was awarded as the first winner of Philadelphia Startup Weekend Competition. My responsibilities were related to financial budget preparation, forecasting revenue and expenses as well as fund-raising. More creative component of my activities included planning and implementation of marketing projects, brand expansion and social media engagement, company's future expansions and one more vitally important task was to establish long-term strategic partnerships and plan for the company’s future expansion. After this, I took up the vacancy of Summer Financial Analyst at Barclays Investment Bank where I completed a rotational internship with Financial Planning & Analytics (FB&A) and Equity Derivatives Product Control. Within this short internship I had a wide range of responsiblities, like Support budget, forecasting, and headcount processes for Global Credit Products trading and sales Within FB&A like conducted detail weekly commentary and summary about the movement of the Global Market and gave training presentations on various topics, such as different strategies in Options Trading, risks in Correlation Trading, etc. This how looks my career path as of now. It's obvious that's not an easy one and consists of numerous steps. But it doesn't matter how difficult these steps are, as I'm sure today that I'm on the right path where I can achieve success.

Personally nursing has always been the right choice as a career.  Nursing allows me to have the contact with a number of patients, enabling me to make a different in their treatment.  Additionally, I have always looked forward to being part of the health care system, as a responsible first-line in a patient’s stay.  For me nursing is the right choice to make that difference in the care and treatment of a patient.

The healthcare of an individual is one of the most important aspects in life.  After all, everyone has worried or has had issues with their health, at least to some extent.  Many individuals worry about illnesses and other conditions, such as cancer and other unfortunate topics that can alter their life in a negative manner.  As a result, the medical care of individuals is concentrated upon and is a leading area of research and supplementary fields.

Personally I have experienced this in my life.  In my stay at hospitals, and even health clinics, I have had experiences that have exposed me to the health care system and the dedicated staffs that fill these centers.  While I do what I can to stay healthy, I, as most other people, have a reasonable level of worry about having a serious condition in my life.

Family and friends have also had such experiences.  There have been times that I have accompanied loved ones to the hospital or even to a doctor.  In these experiences you come to realize the important role of doctors, nurses, and other parts of the staff that make up these centers.  You also realize how valuable they are as those who can take care of yourself, a loved one, and others in your community when you think about it.

In these experiences and general awareness, this has drawn me to consider choosing nursing.  Personally I desire to have that kind of an impact in one’s life.  As a valuable part of a person’s healthcare, I feel that this responsibility is important.

Role of the Nurse

As a distinct part of the healthcare system, from hospitals to other types of healthcare centers, the nurse plays a valuable role.  As previously mentioned, members of healthcare such as doctors, nurses, and other are an individual’s way to finding relief for whatever condition may elicit their presence in such a center.  Yet, even in this distinction, there is a further one in the role of a nurse.

In many cases the nurse is the first line in terms of members of a healthcare-related staff.  The nurse serves an important role in addressing the patient’s issues and performing tasks related to the reason for the patient’s visit.  In this capacity I find it engaging to have this type of a presence for a patient.  I am drawn to be able to be one of the first members of a valuable healthcare staff to provide services for the patient’s condition or reason for appearing.

Interaction with Patients

One of the most crucial points to why I chose nursing as a career is in regards to the interaction with patients.  As a part of the healthcare system, nurses have a valuable place in the staff to cater to the needs of patients.  Nurses are able to answer any questions and speak to the patients about anything that is needed during their stay at the health care center.

Being able to be a large part of a patient’s stay is important to me.  I desire to interact with the patients to make their stay better in any way possible.  Having this level of contact with patients is important in my desire to add to the experience of the patient.  Having this level of contact not only improves the level of their health-related care, but also the overall experience beyond merely receiving medical attention.

Additionally, the experience is much more enjoyable when dedicated nurses, and other members of the staff, create this kind of environment.  In my and other individuals’ experiences that I have spoken to, nurses can provide a calming or engaging environment just with their presence.  As a nurse I will be able to give any means of support to a patient as I am able, from calming their worries to having a casual conversation to make their stay more pleasant.  For me this is a difference that moves beyond medical attention.

Nursing is an important position across a great deal of health care centers.  A nurse plays a valuable role in a patient’s stay in a hospital or other medical center.  As a valuable team of health care providers, the nurse is often the first health care professional to have contact with the patient.  As a career this is desirable for me to be exposed to patients in this capacity.

The exposure to patients in many kinds of healthcare settings is another more direct response to why I chose nursing as a career.  The overall experience from the perspective of the patient is not constrained to medical attention, although this is certainly an important part of a nurse’s duty.  Having the ability to interact with so many patients on a normal basis allows the nurse to go above and beyond this to improve the patient’s experience.  The nurse is able to provide support and other means to improve his or her experience and stay in a medical center.  These valuable roles and experiences capture why I chose nursing as a career, which allows me to play a valuable role in a patient’s experience.

Long Essay On Career 500 Words in English

Each and every one of us has faced a certain junction or a cross-road at some point in our lives that has had a major impact on our lives. This can be both a professional crossroads or personal crossroads. But in this essay on career, I would like to talk about the cross-road that we see in our professional career. It’s not just the students who would have faced a dilemma in deciding a career, even employees past 30 years of age face this crisis.

When a student’s face its called a beginner’s crisis, but when an employee 6 years down the lane faces dilemmas in his or her career choices, then its usually called a mid-life crisis or mid-career crisis. Midlife crisis is a term that refers to people who are having second thoughts about their career a few years down after working in the same. There might be plenty of reasons for these some of which may be an everyday monologue, fatigue, salary issues, professional growth issues, internal office dilemmas, etc. In this essay on career, I am going to talk about both the type of career choices.

A student’s life is the first crossroad that we face in our lives. By keeping certain factors in mind, there is plenty of career choice a student can choose from. Some of the popular career choices are engineering, medicine, arts, and commerce. Which career to choose and on what terms is something that every student will have to worry about. There are certain criteria to choose a career, which are:

Criteria to Choose a Career

  • Passion: The word passion sounds cliche, but it is an important criterion to consider before choosing a career path. If everyone follows their passion and chose a career accordingly, then the concept of a mid-career crisis wouldn’t have occurred in the first place. Every one of us would have dreamt of something during our childhood. We all wanted to become a police, a cricketer, an actor, a doctor or an engineer. But not everyone follows and listens to the child in them. We ultimately give up on our passions and choose a safe career which will give us a good salary. Risk-taking is a part and parcel of life and no one should regret not doing something 80 years down the lane when they are on their death bed.
  • Stability: Financial stability, as well as job stability, is something that should be considered as an important criterion. Because the world is increasingly changing and many industries are being taken out by emerging technologies. So before choosing a particular career path, the stability as the well the salary factors should be taken into account
  • Future prospects: Future prospects, both in terms of your interest in the field as well the survival of the field itself, in the next 20 years should be taken into consideration. A Mid-career crisis can be avoided if future prospects are evaluated properly. Certain industries might fall and certain might become the next biggest phenomenon. People who are serious about their careers choose a path which has a long-lasting prospect
  • Satisfaction: This is another important factor while choosing a career path. A good salary, a nice work environment and a good location might give some people the job satisfaction they need, but there are some people who are not affected by any of that. The only thing that matters to them is the job itself. Usually, a job that is socially helpful is the ones that provide true satisfaction.

This essay on career is written from a student’s point of view. But an essay on career from an employee’s point of view will be totally different. The factors mentioned above might not even be relevant to them anymore. But this essay on career in mainly confined to the beginner’s journey.

Career Essay

Short Essay on Career 200 Words in English

Below, we have given an example essay on career with a 200-word limit in English for students of classes 1,2,3,4,5 and 6.

Career is a term that is referred to the professional path that a candidate decides to take upon to earn a livelihood. This is, in fact, a vague definition for a career. And more importantly, the concept of people choosing a career to earn a livelihood has almost become redundant. The millennials nowadays are risk-takers and choose a career according to their passion irrespective of whether the career is stable or not. There is something called as an odyssey stage where people who have just completed there degrees, wants to postpone their prospects of working. People nowadays are in pursuit of knowledge more than the pursuit of money. From a bachelor’s degree to a master degree to a PhD, nothing seems to be enough for the growing population of millennials.

This is something even businesses are taking into consideration. The attrition rates in companies are very high resulting in loss of money for the company in training and induction. The attrition rates would not have been high, provided a student had got good career counselling before choosing a particular career path.

There are many career paths that a person can choose from. The fact that there are so many choices is in itself a problem statement. If the choices were low, people would not have much say in choosing a career path. But on what factors does he or she choose is a big question to ponder upon.

10 Lines On Career Essay

  • A career path should be chosen based on passion and interest in the field
  • There are plenty of career choices to choose from like engineering, medical, commerce or management
  • There is no one definition for a good career path
  • The suitability of a career depends on person to person
  • People tend to leave companies often because of improper career guidance at the beginning of their career
  • Safe career paths are those that provide good salary and job security
  • Choosing a risky career path like music or dance has become an increasing trend among the Millenials
  • The millennial mentality is far different from the previous generation’s mentality in term of career paths
  • Companies should address and provide good career guidance to their employees
  • Educational institutes should provide career counselling to students in accordance with their interests and aptitude.

Choosing career paths.

734 words | 3 page(s)

Choosing one’s career is a process that occurs throughout one’s life, and involves selecting among various employment opportunities that present themselves along the way. Every person going through that process is influenced by several different factors, including the context in which they live, their personal abilities, and the degree of educational completion that they are able to attain (Factors Influencing Career Choices of Adolescents and Young Adults in Rural Pennsylvania, 2006.) This paper will discuss some of the variables that play a role in making decisions about choosing careers.

When students are in high school, one of the major transitions they often make involves deciding to pursue a certain career. Often, this decision is seen by family members and the community as a whole as only a beginning to the development of workplace readiness. In any event, these choices play a significant part in steering young people into career paths that either open up opportunities or close the door on others. A study conducted in Central Pennsylvania focused on 98 high school seniors, 50 graduating college seniors, and 24 young adults who were already employed. The participants were interviewed regarding their career goals, their influences on those choices, and the obstacles to reaching their goals. Many themes emerged from the research which identified areas that could potentially be addressed by various stakeholders who are interested in helping young people make career choices.

It was found that factors including the family, school, and community play a tremendous role on the identity formation of young people, and also influence their career choices. Those three elements were all factors in the self-concept of young people, their academic success, and their vocational aptitudes and interests. In particular, it was found that parents played an undeniably important role in shaping career choices of their children (Factors Influencing Career Choices of Adolescents and Young Adults in Rural Pennsylvania, 2006.) Because parents convey to their children their expectations about educational success and advancement as well as their perceptions of the appropriateness of certain occupations, they represented a crucial role in helping their children develop preferences for their job goals. In addition, it was discovered that the schools attended by students as well as the community environment in which they live also plays a part in either supporting or putting off making career decisions, so that clearly the nature of a student’s experience in school as well as his or her connections to and within the community also are important factors in the formation of identity and pursuit of career goals. Students who had little or no support from parents, teachers, or their communities had great difficulty either establishing their career goals, or pursuing them, or both.

At times, it is difficult for students to discover and identify their interests, and to understand how those interests might translate into a career or profession. That is why it is so important for guidance to be provided that will assist them in narrowing down their interests and understanding how they may use those talents or preferences in a job setting. For example, a student who has talent in drawing may have no idea about how that skill can be utilized into a career, but professionals at school, in the community, or support at home may help steer that student into one of many careers that involve art including graphic arts, illustrating, teaching art, or many other options. With the proper level of guidance and support, in an ideal situation a person finds a career that is both enjoyable, utilizes one’s talents, and compensates a person for doing what he or she loves best.

In addition, many students and young adults recognize that there are certain barriers that may exist regarding their career choices, such as financial demands to pursue their professional paths. Lack of opportunities for financial assistance, part-time jobs, and lack of knowledge about grants and scholarships may prevent students from believing that they can achieve their career goals, but again, parents as well as adults in schools and the community can help young people explore options to overcome these problems. Choosing and achieving a career path is a vital part of human development, and is largely dependent on the amount of support and guidance provided by family, school, and community.

If one has the information, mecan select from the different courses that offer a balance between my abilities and interests.

As a final step, compare all the different options. One needs to wisely consider variables such as college, job offers or scholarships. Also, students should make sure that while choosing the options they should zero down to more than one option. So that in case of plan A becomes unachievable then students can work upon plan B without wasting time or getting disheartened.

What is also needed is that the school should involve in counselling sessions for the students wherein all the options are discussed in detail. The pros and cons of each option should be kept opened in front of the the students. An ability assessment can also be taken to highlight the strength and interest of the students. Online career assessment websites are also available which gives students the opportunity to answer the questions relating to students interest and then giving an immediate feedback about the career option that fits best with their personality.
