There are no good questions. Means like some add or subtracting of integers .I’m from class 6 . Cbse school. Name-harapriya barla. Age – 11

In 6 Maths Chapter 6 Integers, we will study about various properties of Integers to solve the questions. As we have studied in previous classes, about the natural numbers , whole numbers, etc. The first numbers to be discovered were natural numbers i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4,… If we include zero to the collection of natural numbers, we get a new collection of numbers known as whole numbers i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4,… Now we find that there are negative numbers too. If we put the whole numbers and the negative numbers together, the new collection of numbers will look like 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,…, –1, – 2, – 3, –4, –5, … and this collection of numbers is known as Integers. In this collection, 1, 2, 3, … are said to be positive integers The numbers having negative sign – 1, – 2, – 3,…. are said to be negative integers.

Draw a line and mark some points at equal distance on it. Mark a point as zero on it. In order to mark + 5 on this line, we move 5 points to the right of zero.

Chapter 6: Integers Notes

The collection of all the whole numbers and their negatives are called the integers excluding the decimals or fractions. 

The positive whole numbers are called the positive integers and the negative whole numbers are called the negative integers.

Even in our daily life we come across many examples where we use negative numbers such as for measuring temperature, for denoting the water level or elevation of a place with respect to main sea level, for showing outstanding amounts etc.

Some examples of integers are; \[....-4,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,4....\].

Successors and Predecessors:

A successor for both positive and negative integers can be found out by adding $1$ to it. And similarly, the predecessor can be found out by subtraction $1$ from the given integer.

Addition of Integers:

If the integers have the same sign, we simply add them and put the given sign in front.

When we add positive integers, we will get a positive integer. For example, $(+5)+(+8)=+13$.

When we add negative integers, we will get a negative integer. For example, $(-5)+(-8)=-13$.

When integers with different signs are added, we subtract them like positive whole numbers without considering their signs and then put the sign of the bigger one in the front which in turn is decided after removing the negative sign from the negative integer given. The two cases have been shown below.

Example: $(-7)+(+4)=-3$

Example: $(+7)+(-4)=+3$

Multiplication of Integers:

The final sign after multiplication of integers is decided based on conventions tabulated below with examples;

  • The collection of natural numbers, negative numbers, and zero is regarded as integers.
  • Fractions and decimals are not included in the category of integers.
  • The positive numbers are called positive integers, and the negative numbers are called negative integers.
  • Negative integers are placed on the left side of zero on the number line, and positive integers are placed on the right side of zero.
  • Integers are important in daily life to measure the temperature, denote the water level, measure the height of a place from the surface of the ocean, or perform simple calculations.
  • Some examples of integers are -3, -6, 8, 2, -5, 0, etc.
  • Integers can be placed on a number line.
  • As the number line goes in the rightward direction the integers become greater.
  • The numbers decrease as we move in the leftward direction.
  • Therefore, -1 is greater than -5, which is greater than -10. Again, +10 is greater than +5, which is greater than +1.
  • Addition of Integers
  • When two positive integers are added, the sum is always a positive integer. For example, (+5) + (+7) = +12.
  • When two negative integers are added, the result is always a negative number. If -5 is added with -6, the result is -11.
  • When a positive and a negative number are added, the result takes the sign of the greater number. For example, (-7) + (2) = (-5).
  • Subtraction of Integers
  • When the greater number is positive and the smaller number is negative, the result takes the positive sign. For example, 75 – 45 = 30.
  • 45 – (-23) = 45 + 23 = 68.
  • -73 – (+30) = -73 – 30 = -110. 
  • Properties of Addition and Subtraction of Integers
  • Closure Property: The sum or subtraction of two given integers is always an integer. For example, 5 + 3 = 8; 5 – 3 = 2; both 8 and 2 are integers.
  • Commutative Property: The sum of two positive integers does not depend on the order of placement of the integers. For instance, 5 + 9 = 9 + 5 = 14.
  • Associativity of Addition: The sum of more than two positive integers does not depend on the grouping of the integers. For example: (5 + 3) + 6 = 5 + (3 +6) = (5 + 6) +3 = 14.
  • Additive Identity: If an integer is added to zero, the result remains unchanged. If 5 is added to zero the sum is 5 which is the value of the given number.
  • Multiplication of Integers
  • When a positive integer is multiplied by another positive integer the product is always a positive integer. 13 X 2 = 26, where both the given numbers are positive integers, hence, the product is a positive integer.
  • When a positive integer and a negative integer are multiplied, then the result is a negative integer. For example, -90 X 3 = -270.
  • This point is noteworthy and important from the point of view of the exam. When two negative integers are multiplied then the product is always a positive integer. For example, -270 x -3 = 810.
  • Properties of Multiplication of Integers
  • Multiplication by Zero: If an integer is multiplied by zero the product is zero. 84 X 0 = 0.
  • Multiplication by 1: If an integer is multiplied by 1, the product is the given number itself. Any number multiplied by 1 will produce the same number This is known as the identity property of multiplication. For instance, the result of multiplying 5 by 1 will be 5.
  • 92 x 1 = 92.
  • Division of Integers
  • When one integer is divided by another integer and any one of them is a negative number, then the quotient must be a negative number. For example, -18/3 = -6, or 45/(-5) = -9.
  • When the dividend and the divisors are both positive numbers or both negative numbers, the quotient is always a positive number. For example: -77/-11 =7; 36/6 = 6. In both cases, the quotients are positive integers.
  • Properties of Division of Integers
  • If an integer is divided by another integer, the quotient may not be an integer. For example: 22/7 = 3.14. Both 22 and 7 are integers but the quotient is a decimal.
  • If an integer is divided by zero the result becomes undefined. 34/0 = undefined.
  • If an integer is divided by 1, the given number itself becomes the quotient. For instance, 14/1 = 14.

Successors and Predecessors

  • The number placed at the immediate right position of a number is a successor number.
  • The number placed at the immediate left position of another number is the predecessor to that number.
  • So, a successor number is the sum of one and the given number.
  • If one is subtracted from a given number, the result is the predecessor number.
  • For example, the predecessor number of ten is nine; 10 – 1 = 9.
  • The successor number to ten is eleven; 10 + 1 = 11.

Introduction to Zero

The number zero.

  • The number zero means an absence of value.

The Number Line

  • Collection of all positive and negative numbers including zero are called integers. ⇒ Numbers …, – 4, – 3, – 2, – 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, … are integers.

Representing Integers on the Number Line

Integers-3

  • Draw a line and mark a point as 0 on it
  • Points marked to the left (-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6) are called negative integers.
  • Points marked to the right (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) or (+1, +2, +3, +4, +5, +6) are called positive integers.

Absolute Value of an Integer

  • Absolute value of an integer is the numerical value of the integer without considering its sign .
  • Example: Absolute value of -7 is 7 and of +7 is 7.

Ordering Integers

  • On a number line, the number increases as we move towards right and decreases as we move towards left.
  • Hence, the order of integers is written as…, –5, –4, – 3, – 2, – 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…
  • Therefore, – 3 < – 2, – 2 < – 1, – 1 < 0, 0 < 1, 1 < 2 and 2 < 3.

Addition of Integers

 Positive integer + Negative integer

  • Example: (+5) + (-2) Subtract: 5 – 2 = 3 Sign of bigger integer (5): + Answer: +3
  • Example: (-5) + (2) Subtract: 5-2 = 3 Sign of the bigger integer (-5): – Answer: -3

Positive integer + Positive integer

  • Example: (+5) + (+2) = +7
  • Add the 2 integers and add the positive sign.

Negative integer + Negative integer

  • Example: (-5) + (-2) = -7
  • Add the two integers and add the negative sign.

Properties of Addition and Subtraction of Integers

Subtraction of Integers

  • The subtraction of an integer from another integer is same as the addition of the integer and its additive inverse.
  • Example: 56 – (–73) = 56 + 73 = 129 and 14 – (8) = 14 – 8 = 6

Closure under Addition

  • a + b and a – b are integers, where a and b are any integers.

Commutativity Property

  • a + b = b + a for all integers a and b.

Associativity of Addition

  • (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) for all integers a, b and c.

Additive Identity

  • Additive Identity is 0, because adding 0 to a number leaves it unchanged.
  • a + 0 = 0 + a = a for every integer a.

Multiplication of Integers

  • Product of a negative integer and a positive integer is always a negative integer. 10×−2=−20
  • Product of two negative integers is a positive integer. −10×−2=20
  • Product of even number of negative integers is positive. (−2)×(−5)=10
  • Product of an odd number of negative integers is negative. (−2)×(−5)×(6)=−60

Closure under Multiplication

  • Integer * Integer = Integer

Commutativity of Multiplication

  • For any two integers a and b, a × b = b × a.

Associativity of Multiplication

  • For any three integers a, b and c, (a × b) × c = a × (b × c).

Distributive Property of Integers

  • Under addition and multiplication, integers show the distributive property.
  • For any integers a, b and c, a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c.

Multiplication by Zero

  • For any integer a, a × 0 = 0 × a = 0.

Multiplicative Identity

  • 1 is the multiplicative identity for integers.
  • a × 1 = 1 × a = a

Division of Integers

  • (positive integer/negative integer)or(negative integer/positive integer) ⇒ The quotient obtained is a negative integer.
  • (positive integer/positive integer)or(negative integer/negative integer) ⇒ The quotient obtained is a positive integer.

Properties of Division of Integers

For any integer a,

  • a/0 is not defined

Integers are not closed under division.

Case Study Questions on Integers

In a test $(+5)$ marks are given for every correct answer and (-3) Marks are given for every incorrect answers and no marks for not attempting any question. Daksh scored 16 marks, while Riya scores $(-8)$ marks Manya scored 10 marks.

Answer the following questions:

Q.1. Total marks scored by Daksh, Riya and Manya: (a) 34 (b) 18 (c) -18 (d) 20

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ans. Option (b) is correct. Explanation: Since, Total marks scored by Darsh, $\begin{aligned} \text { Riya and Mayan } & =16+(-8)+10 \\ & =18\end{aligned}$

Q. 2. Product of Marks scored by all of then is: (a) -2440 (b) -1280 (c) 1440 (d) 20

Ans. Option (b) is correct. Explanation: Since, Product of marks scored by all of them $$ \begin{aligned} & =(16) \times(-8) \times 10 \\ & =16 \times(-80) \\ & =-1280 \end{aligned} $$ Q.3. If Daksh get 5 correct answers, then number of questions be attempt incorrectly is: (a) 7 (b) 5 (c) 3 (d) 6

Difficulty Level: Medium

Ans. Option (c) is correct. Explanation: Total Marks scored by Daksh $=16$ but No. of correct question by Daksh $=5$ Marks scored for correct question $=5 \times 5=25$ Deducting marks of wrong question $=$ Total marks – correct question scored $$ \begin{aligned} & =26-25 \\ & =-9 \end{aligned} $$

Hence, No of incorrect questions $$ \begin{aligned} & =\frac{\text { total dedecting marks }}{\text { one mark no. of dedection }} \\ & =\frac{-9}{-3}=3 \end{aligned} $$ Q. 4. If Riya has attempted 6 questions incorrectly, then find the number of questions she has attempted correctly?

Sol. Total marks scored by Riya =(-8) No. of incorrect question =6 Marks scored by incorrect question =6×(-3)=-18 Marks scored by correct question = total scored by Riya – incorrect question numbers $$ =(-8)-(+8) $$

Hence, No. of correct question $$ \begin{aligned} & =\frac{\text { total mark by correct question }}{\text { mark of } 1 \text { corr.question }} \\ & =\frac{10}{5}=2 \end{aligned} $$
