Their terrorizing rule led to the death of over 2 million Cambodians. The film shows how Ung and her siblings were sent to Labor Camps and were trained to become soldiers at such a young and delicate age. This film holds a great amount of historical accuracy and clearly, a lot of effort has been into portraying Loung Ung’s story. As any good sports documentary should, The Deepest Breath showcases the passion and skill required to win in such a demanding arena.

'Saint of Second Chances' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 100% | imdb: 7.5/10, saint of second chances.

Directed by Jeff Malmberg ( Marwencol ) and Academy Award -winner Morgan Neville ( 20 Feet From Stardom ), The Saint of Second Chances is a sports documentary that features one of the most famous families in professional baseball: the Veeck family. Patriarch Bill Veeck is a familiar face for fans of the sport, having been the owner (at various times) of the Cleveland Indians, the St. Louis Browns, and the Chicago White Sox. Bill Veeck spent years building a legacy in the sport, but The Saint of Second Chances is the story of his son, Mike Veeck , who was forced into exile from the sport he loved after causing the downfall of his father’s career.

A documentary keen on examining the wild relationship between the father and son at the center of its story, The Saint of Second Chances is a redemption tale akin to sports movies in the fiction world. The film features a playful narrative that adds to its appeal, and it has received widespread critical acclaim. A no-holds-barred look into the rifts between family members and the part that the media can play in such cases, The Saint of Second Chances holds an almost universal relevance to the lives of viewers and can impact how we all view our loved ones.

'Take Care of Maya' (2023)

Take care of maya.

As a medical team tries to understand 10-year-old Maya Kowalski's rare illness, they begin to question her parents. Suddenly, Maya is in state custody - despite a family desperate to bring their daughter home.

Directed by Henry Roosevelt , Take Care of Maya follows the harrowing true story of Maya Kowalski , who was diagnosed with a rare illness and prescribed Ketamine for her pain. The treatment works for a time, but when her symptoms resurface, her new doctors at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital force her into state custody, suspecting her parents of abuse. This kicks off a deeper investigation into the medical system that quickly snowballs to expose much bigger cracks in the American child welfare organization.

The film documents the agonizing experiences of the Kowalski family from their perspective as they recount the moment that would change their lives forever. It’s an exploration of a bureaucratic and medical nightmare, showcasing the toll it takes on the Kowalskis — ultimately leading to one of Maya’s parents committing suicide. Take Care of Maya is not for the faint of heart, but the painful real-life story it explores is one that needs to be heard.

'Anna Nicole Smith: You Don't Know Me' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 38% | imdb: 6.4/10, anna nicole smith: you don’t know me.

The documentary seeks to reframe the way people see Anna Nicole Smith ’s story with never-before-seen footage and a detailed retelling of her meteoric rise and fall, exploring her humble upbringing, her controversial marriage, and the celebrity culture that ultimately led to her death.

Despite receiving largely negative reviews, Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me presents a sad tale that sheds an unflattering light on the way that women are treated by tabloids and the Hollywood machine. The film is a condemnation of sensationalism and voyeurism in the media, and while many critics found the documentary’s execution in that regard somewhat lacking, it’s still worth watching the movie if only to witness an unseen side of a misunderstood figure.

The documentary explores both musical and personal sides of the man’s life, highlighted by raw and authentic moments that chronicle the journey of an ambitious and scrappy teenager whose viral performance launched him into stardom.

'The American Meme' (2018)

Imdb: 6.1/10, the american meme.

In a time when virality and social media influence have become an ever-growing industry, The American Meme is a documentary film that explores the many facets of this world, both the highs and the lows. The American Meme follows some of the biggest personalities whose careers were built through online buzz, like Paris Hilton , DJ Khaled , and Dane Cook .

With the potential to go viral always feeling like it’s a few clicks away, many people dream of becoming influencers and basking in internet fame. The American Meme takes viewers behind the curtain to show the crushing loneliness, emotional struggles, and lack of privacy that comes with fame. The film received largely positive reactions from critics upon release, with praise for its surprising depth as it explores an industry that’s generally seen as shallow and vapid.

'Pamela: A Love Story' (2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 96% | imdb: 7.2/10, pamela: a love story.

Pamela: A Love Story is a raw exploration of actress and cultural icon Pamela Anderson , told in her own words. With assistance from director Ryan White , Pamela: A Love Story plainly reveals the harsh realities of fame, life-changing trauma, and tabloid scandals. Anderson recounts her journey from her beginnings as a model for Playboy to her time on the series Baywatch to her turbulent marriage to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee .

Crafted in the wake of Hulu’s critically acclaimed scripted series Pam and Tommy , the Canadian-born model ultimately took matters into her own hands, deciding to provide viewers with an unfiltered glimpse into her true life. The result is a thought-provoking and humanizing portrait of a legendary celebrity that successfully takes its audience behind the scenes of Pamela Anderson’s life and career. Pamela: A Love Story questions what it means to be a “sex symbol” and reveals what life really looks like when you finally move beyond that status. – Yael Tygiel

'Sr.' (2022)

Rotten tomatoes: 97% | imdb: 7.3/10.

Sr. is an honest and personal homage to the late filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. , the man behind some of the best countercultural satires of the 1960s and father of one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Produced by his son Robert Downey Jr. ( Avengers: Endgame ) with the assistance of director Chris Smith , Sr. explores the unencumbered career of the progressive director. Through the eyes of an audacious son, Sr. is often touching without hiding harsher realities, allowing friends and colleagues like Alan Arkin ( The Kominsky Method ) and Norman Lear ( One Day at a Time ) to share true and sometimes risqué tributes to the visionary who ushered in the comedic counterculture of the 60s and 70s.

The documentary balances an intimate exploration of the father-son bond with a tribute to one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers, which has garnered Sr. significant critical acclaim. The film won the National Board of Review Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2023 and is a must-watch for all cinephiles.

'Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich' (2022)

Imdb: 6.0/10, ghislaine maxwell: filthy rich.

Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich is a documentary that explores the truth behind the heinous crimes committed by Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein ’s confidante and co-conspirator who is only now being confronted with criminal charges for her involvement in his years of abuse. Directors Maiken Baird and Lisa Bryant feature interviews with Epstein’s victims, highlighted by archive footage of Maxwell, Epstein, and other powerful people, exploring just how deeply involved Maxwell was in the trafficking of young women.

Considering the widespread media coverage and outrage that the central case elicited, Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich has a lot of horrifying details to unpack. The film spends nearly two hours unfolding the case against the woman at the center of these tragedies, exposing the monster that she is. It’s an informative film that lays out the facts of the case, some of which may be familiar to viewers but are no less stomach-churning. – Yael Tygiel

While there’s a good chance you know at least a few of Twain’s songs – “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “From This Moment On,” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” are just a few of her long list of hits – you may not know how many obstacles she faced reaching the success she did.

While the film may not be particularly groundbreaking in itself, Shania Twain’s story presents a fascinating look at the struggles the icon faced in her life and career. From the sexism she encountered as a female in the industry to her parents’ tragic deaths, an ugly divorce, and a bout with Lyme disease, things haven’t always been easy. Twain, however, has never given up, making the documentary a riveting and inspiring tale that both reflects on her challenging, trailblazing past as well as looks toward her bright future.

'Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story' (2022)

Rotten tomatoes: 100% | imdb: 6.7/10, stay on board: the leo baker story.

Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story is an unexpected journey into an often overlooked sport, following Leo Baker as he ascends to the elite heights of professional skateboarding. Directors Nicola Marsh and Giovanni Reda explore the competitive nature of skate culture, which grew from the neighborhood skate park to the world stage, quickly becoming an exclusive inner circle. The film catches up with Baker in the run-up to the 2020 Olympics, which was the very first time that skateboarding was included in the Summer Olympics.

Through the documentary, Marsh and Reda allow Leo Baker to reveal how his skills took him to the top, forging a path for others to follow while building an inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community. A Netflix Original, Stay on Board: The Leo Baker Story won the Audience Award for Documentary Feature at the 2022 Outfest Los Angeles LGBTQ+ Film Festival .

'White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie and Fitch' (2022)

Rotten tomatoes: 64% | imdb: 5.8/10, white hot: the rise and fall of abercrombie and fitch.

Dive into the drama of a peak trend from the late 90s and early aughts with White Hot: The Rise and Fall of Abercrombie and Fitch , a documentary exploring the once-popular store’s rollercoaster ride within American culture. Directed by Alison Klayman ( Jagged ), White Hot unpacks the all-American brand, which built clout based on the exclusion of race, class, and just about anything else it could. White Hot examines the pop culture phenomenon, dissecting every decision the brand made that allowed it to soar before everything came crashing down.

Through interviews with former employees, executives, and models, White Hot reveals how Abercrombie and Fitch built itself through discriminatory practices, which eventually led to the brand’s downfall. While the film may not have a lot of new details to bring to light, its exploration of a once-beloved brand and its fall from grace is as entertaining as it is informative. White Hot is a fast-paced, thorough documentary that will appeal to every millennial mall rat – whether they wore the brand or not.

'Our Father' (2022)

Rotten tomatoes: 79% | imdb: 6.6/10.

Shocking, creepy, and – at times – just plain strange, Our Father is a documentary that proves sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. The film exposes former Indianapolis fertility doctor Donald Cline , who used his own sperm to impregnate dozens of his patients – none of whom had any idea that that’s what he was doing. Directed by Lucie Jourdan , Our Father puts the disgraced doctor’s victims at the forefront of its shocking investigation.

There are jaw-dropping moments galore as we see one woman’s at-home DNA test spiral into something bigger and more sinister than anyone ever could have imagined. Our Father received largely positive reviews from critics, capturing popular attention with its disturbing true story and exposé on medical malfeasance.

'Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art' (2021)

Rotten tomatoes: 88% | imdb: 7.0/10, made you look: a true story about fake art.

Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art is an enthralling documentary on the largest case of art fraud in American history. Through the film, director Barry Avrich reveals how an ingenious $80 million con was perpetrated through the famous and reputable Knoedler & Company. The question becomes how much did those employed by Knoedler know. Were they duped like their clientele, or did they willingly look the other way because they had become complicit in a profitable scheme?

This is precisely what this captivating con-artist documentary is all about, and Made You Look does an excellent job unfolding this suspenseful real-life crime story. The film received positive reviews for its lively storytelling and the fascinating mystery at its heart. It's low stakes for the viewer (after all, we're probably not wealthy art collectors or dealers), high-stakes for those involved, and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.

'The Bleeding Edge' (2018)

Rotten tomatoes: 100% | imdb: 7.6/10, the bleeding edge.

While you may want to go for the latest technology when it comes to getting a new cell phone or video game console, you should be more circumspect when it comes to what you put in your body. In their 2018 documentary The Bleeding Edge , writer-director Kirby Dick and producers Amy Ziering and Amy Herdy examine the medical device industry and discover (shocker) that capitalism has inserted its tentacles into the FDA, the regulatory agency that should be overseeing the devices that doctors are implanting into patients.

With a strong mix of personal stories and pulling back to explore the larger issues, The Bleeding Edge will change the way you interact with your doctor the next time you need to have some kind of invasive procedure. The film was a critical darling upon its release and has maintained a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. While it is wrong that this burden has been pushed onto patients, at least this documentary arms you with the knowledge you need so that you can avoid some horrific outcomes.

'Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed' (2021)

Rotten tomatoes: 80% | imdb: 6.9/10, bob ross: happy accidents, betrayal & greed.

As you may have guessed from the title, Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed is a documentary that chronicles how the titular artist became a pop culture icon by accident and covers his philosophy of painting. A Netflix Original documentary directed by Joshua Rofé ( Sasquatch ), the film features interviews with Ross' son and best friend, as well as others who knew him. It also gets a bit into his personal life, showing us the man behind the canvas. But the main thrust of the movie is the business dealings that took advantage of Ross and the fallout from his death.

The first thing to know about the documentary is that it does not reveal that this beloved figure was a bad man. But it does uncover the disturbing truth behind the business of Bob Ross Inc., specifically what happened after Ross' untimely death. Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed is an intriguing and fascinating film that received critical praise for how it shines a light on the untold story of a beloved celebrity. - Adam Chitwood

'David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet' (2020)

Rotten tomatoes: 96% | imdb: 8.9/10, david attenborough: a life on our planet.

David Attenborough is easily one of the most recognizable figures in the world of conservation. The English natural historian and author is practically a household name due to his extensive work on natural history documentaries, delivered in his iconic narration style. He's so respected both among the general public and the scientific community that there have been over 20 species named after him. And in David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet , he gives an account of his long career, reflecting on how much the planet has changed over the 90-odd years of his life. Mixed with footage from his previous work, Attenborough describes the documentary as his "witness statement."

Attenborough also presents what he believes could be the end result if humanity continues to abuse nature the way we do now. Without going into too much detail, the terrible future he predicts involves the disappearance of entire ecosystems and drastic changes to the climate, all culminating in a mass extinction event. But Attenborough also suggests that this future could be avoided and details the steps that we need to take to reverse the damage we've done to the natural world. It's a thought-provoking documentary that offers just as much hope as it does criticism. Whether you're interested in matters of ecology or not, this documentary is an educational experience that everyone ought to have. – Remus Noronha

As Foster delves into the octopus's world, he witnesses her intelligence, resourcefulness, and the challenges of her short life. This newfound friendship becomes a turning point for Foster himself. Witnessing the octopus's resilience chips away at his cynicism, fostering a newfound openness towards both the natural world and those around him.

Kai's interview soon ends up being the key to his imprisonment after details come to light that reveal Kai is not who he appears to be, nor is his version of events the way things actually went down.

Cinematographer Kirsten Johnson embarks on a poignant journey with her father, who's battling dementia, to document a series of imaginative scenarios, each depicting her father's fictional deaths. They include everything from a dangerous trip down the stairs to an air conditioner mishap. Far from being macabre, these staged scenes act as more of a unique blend of humor and heartache that celebrates Johnson's life instead of adding dread to the end of it, which helps to make this documentary worth experiencing.  - BV

Pepsi, Where's My Jet?

Back in 1996, Pepsi launched its "Pepsi Stuff" campaign and made some bold claims. Their commercials seemed to suggest that collecting enough "Pepsi Points" could nab you rewards from jackets to water bottles and, confoundingly, a Harrier jet. John Leonard and Todd Hoffman are two men who made an outrageous plan to secure that very jet. But after fulfilling the requirements and finding that Pepsi didn't deliver, Leonard's quest for his jet carried over to the courtroom. It's a bizarre story but a lighthearted watch that ultimately reveals that, sometimes, advertising is just that — advertising. - BV

Take Care of Maya

One of those stories that demand to be the center of Netflix's documentaries about broken systems and industries, Take Care of Maya tries to explain the hell faced by the Kowalski family when their daughter Maya faced a confusing set of symptoms that were difficult to diagnose.

Applauded for explaining one quite broken aspect of the U.S. healthcare system in a powerful way, Take Care of Maya is as important as it is upsetting. - JS

Arnold breaks down his life into three chapters: body-builder, actor and politician. And it's not just Arnold that you're hearing from, but folks such as James Cameron, Sylvester Stallone and politician Willie Brown.

Just know that Arnold isn't exactly your average documentary. Like Pamela, A Love Story, it is a glossy documentary series that's more about enjoying stories of a life well-lived than challenging the person at the center. - JS

Waco: American Apocalypse

The disastrous standoff at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, TX was permanently etched into the memories of those old enough to have watched it take place in real time in 1993. Over a little under two months, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) and the FBI were on one side, and David Koresh's apocalyptic Branch Davidians were on the other — and then it ended in flames.

Decades later, director Tiller Russell's three-part docuseries analyzes the catastrophe from all angles. It includes interviews with many involved, including those who lived on the compound, as well as never-before-seen footage of FBI negotiations during the standoff. And as you learn about how the dual FBI teams on the scene had different goals, you'll start to question everything you knew about Waco. - JS

Money Shot: The Pornhub Story

Pornhub, a highly-popular adult film website — basically the YouTube of erotica — has been at the center of scandals for years. Accusations of how PornHub platformed non-consensual content, including child pornography, have swirled for years. And so Netflix — home to both documentaries and steamy content — is the perfect home for director Suzanne Hillinger's film about the company.

Through interviews with adult film actors and advocates, as well as employees of parent company MindGeek, 'Money Shot' educates audiences on the troubles of a site they may have dismissed as a simple purveyor of smut. - JS

Descendant is one of the best Netflix documentaries because it's a bit different from the field. While Netflix has become known for its true crime documentaries — of which we have plenty below — Descendant is a history lesson that will open eyes to an untold and secret story.

Director Margaret Brown's focus here is on an untold part of the history of the slave trade, as the Clotilda — the last known ship to carry stolen Africans to America — was burned to hide the evidence that it existed. Now, in a region called Africatown (found near Mobile, Alabama), the descendants of those slaves are telling their ancestor's stories.

Utterly captivating as it peels back an untold part of American history, Descendant is a Netflix documentary that needed to be made. - JS

Pamela, A Love Story

Far from your average doc, and arguably something of an auto-biography, Pamela Anderson's Netflix documentary dives into her past from a new vantage point: her own. Up until now (a matching book was released), Ms. Anderson's tale of fame has mostly been told by others, including a recent Hulu drama series that she refused to watch.

Instead, she'd suggest you watch this documentary that features archival footage from her past. If you're surprised this film is on this list, note that critics call it a riveting and thoughtful analysis of an incredibly public life.  - JS

The Tinder Swindler

If you've watched Inventing Anna , where Anna Sorokin was lying her way through the NYC elites (it's more of a guilty pleasure than one of the best shows on Netflix ), but wanted something even more real than that true crime drama? Look no further than The Tindler Swindler, which shows us (we don't need a reminder) that men are just as manipulative as anyone else.

The Tinder Swindler is a must-watch documentary , revealing the havoc left by Simon Leviev, a man who took outrageous sums of money from women as he traveled across Europe. All it took was getting them to fall in love with him, and these women were practically handing over their checkbooks. - JS

While there's no repairing the damage done on dozens if not hundreds of athletes over the years by former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, Athlete A offers many of those he victimized an opportunity to tell their story and expose the truth depths of his horrific crimes. It's a heartbreaking watch at times but an important one, empowering the women previously in his care and proving that the truth will always come out.  - JS

You’ve probably heard loads of people saying they’ll never eat seafood again after watching Seaspiracy, and with good reason. This 2021 documentary delves into the environmental impact of mass fishing and highlights the damage and destruction caused to marine life by human beings.

American Murder: The Family Next Door

Sadly, domestic violence and even murder between romantic partners isn’t all that uncommon, so the fact that Chris Watts killed his wife Shannan believing it would enable him to move on with his mistress is depressing but not all that surprising.

Where this story does take a turn for the incredible, however, is when we learn that not only was Shannan pregnant, meaning Chris killed his unborn child but that he also killed his two young daughters as well. American Murder: The Family Next Door tells the story of their tragic deaths as well as the web of lies and deceit Chris Watts weaved in an attempt to get away with it. It’s harrowing, to say the least. - JS

The Social Dilemma

With a seeming majority of society spending more time on phones than connecting with people face-to-face, it’s important to take a critical look at modern socio-interactive implications. The Social Dilemma interviews a variety of tech experts who expose plenty of industry secrets, many of which aren’t all that well-kept, to begin with.

However, this is one of the best Netflix documentaries because its discussion about the harm social media is doing to us as individuals and as a collective human race is posed with nuance and will certainly leave viewers with food for thought.  - JS

Abducted in Plain Sight

When 12-year-old Jan Broberg was abducted in 1974 by a close family friend, her family and wider community were incredibly relieved when she was eventually returned safely. Then the same man, Robert Berchtold, kidnapped Broberg again, leaving many wondering how on earth such a crime could have been allowed to happen once, let alone twice. Abducted in Plain Sight has many moments that will make you wonder what on earth people are thinking, as much of the story beggars belief. However, that’s part of what makes this one one of the best Netflix documentaries.  - JS

To this day, no one has been convicted for the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier. That is unless you count Ian Bailey, a local journalist who was sentenced to 25 years for the crime in France but has avoided extradition. Bailey is an active part of the documentary, making the whole story that much more bizarre and entrancing. - JS

David Beckham has been a polarizing figure throughout his career. A larger-than-life footballer in a celebrity relationship, some loved him and others despised him.

18 biopics to watch on Netflix right now

  • Biographical movies exploring the lives of real people are always popular films.
  • Actors are often given awards for these roles while audiences learn more about historical figures.
  • Insider lists the 18 best biopics to watch on Netflix listed in chronological order by release year.

'Bonnie and Clyde' (1967)

biographies on netflix 2022

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway took on the title roles in this movie, which focus on American criminals, Bonnie and Clyde, infamous bank robbers during the Great Depression.

Both landed Oscar nominations for their portrayals. In fact, the movie earned five acting nominations in total (winning supporting actress for Estelle Parsons), plus nods for best director and best picture, too.

'The Pianist' (2002)

biographies on netflix 2022

Controversial director Roman Polanski won best director for this movie that is based on the autobiography of Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman.

The movie also won best actor for its young star Adrien Brody, too, for his critically acclaimed performance as Szpilman.

'Milk' (2008)

biographies on netflix 2022

Gus Van Sant's "Milk" tells the story of gay rights activist Harvey Milk , the first-ever openly gay person to be elected to public office in California.

Sean Penn won an Oscar for playing Milk, while a stellar supporting cast includes James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Diego Luna.

The movie was written by Dustin Lance Black, who also won an Oscar for his work.

'Ip Man' (2008)

biographies on netflix 2022

"Ip Man" and its three sequels are the ultimate compendium of the life and times of Ip Man, the grandmaster of Wing Chun and the teacher of Bruce Lee.

The stunning cinematography and choreography help to bring a unique visual style to these biographical films.

Good news, too. "Ip Man" two, three, and four are all also on Netflix, so you can watch the entire saga.

'The Social Network' (2010)

biographies on netflix 2022

Aaron Sorkin's masterful screenplay served as the basis for this film, which explores how Mark Zuckerberg created what would later be known as Facebook.

Jesse Eisenberg plays Zuckerberg, while Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Rooney Mara chip in with outstanding supporting performances, too. The movie competed for multiple Oscars, but ultimately only won for Sorkin's script despite David Fincher being a hot contender for best director.

'My Week With Marylin' (2011)

biographies on netflix 2022

There have been many biographical films and TV shows that have explored the life of Marilyn Monroe , but none match up to Michelle Williams' performance as the iconic actress.

This movie cleverly focuses on one week in 1956, when Monroe was shooting the 1957 film "The Prince and the Showgirl" with Laurence Olivier (played in this film by Kenneth Branagh).

While shooting the film in London, Monroe is escorted around the town by a young, hopeful filmmaker (Eddie Redmayne).

'The Iron Lady' (2011)

biographies on netflix 2022

Meryl Streep won her third Oscar for this biopic, winning best actress for playing Margaret Thatcher .

While the movie itself received luke-warm reviews, this is worth a watch for Streep's powerhouse performance alone as we are shown Thatcher's life from a young politician to her days as Prime Minister to the years when her health began to decline.

'Get on Up' (2011)

biographies on netflix 2022

The late, great Chadwick Boseman starred in multiple biopics, but his performance as James Brown in "Get on Up" is one of his very best.

This biopic tells the complete story of Brown's life as he rose from poverty to become one of the most iconic musicians of all time.

'Fruitvale Station' (2013)

biographies on netflix 2022

Michael B. Jordan made a name for himself with this heartbreaking and tragic movie following the story of Oscar Grant III.

The movie, which also stars fellow future MCU star Brie Larson, follows Oscar on the last day of 2008, which detailed how he was killed at the hands of police.

'Philomena' (2013)

biographies on netflix 2022

Steve Coogan traded in his comedy chops for more drama with this movie, which he also wrote (with Jeff Pope).

Coogan plays a journalist who agrees to take on the story of an elderly Irish woman's (Judi Dench) search for her long-lost son, who was taken away from her by nuns when she was forced to live in a convent.

Dench earned an Oscar nomination for her funny and moving performance.

'The Theory of Everything' (2014)

biographies on netflix 2022

This movie explores the lives of Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) and his now ex-wife Jane Hawking (Felicity Jones), from their times as university students to Hawking's diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and onwards.

Jones earned an Oscar nomination for her role while Redmayne won the Oscar for best actor.

'Legend' (2015)

biographies on netflix 2022

Another case of an actor's performance outshining their own film. In "Legend," Tom Hardy takes on the dual role of Kray twins, Ronnie and Reggie, as the film follows the rise and fall of the infamous gangsters.

Hardy is unrecognizable in both roles and this film is worth watching for him alone.

'Trumbo' (2015)

biographies on netflix 2022

Bryan Cranston earned his first and (so far) only Oscar nomination for his portrayal of blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, the man who wrote "Spartacus," "Roman Holiday" and "The Brave One."

This biopic follows Trumbo's early success in the industry to his eventual blacklisting in Hollywood for being a member of the USA's communist party and his career thereafter.

'Steve Jobs' (2015)

biographies on netflix 2022

Another killer script from Aaron Sorkin served as the basis for this quietly-thrilling look at Steve Jobs, the late creative who built Apple.

The movie cleverly focuses on three separate product launches in different years, showing the sort of person Jobs was at work and at home.

Despite a troubled production history, which saw a change of actors and directors more than once, the movie soars with Michael Fassbender in the lead role of Jobs. He and Kate Winslet were both nominated for Oscars.

'The Founder' (2016)

biographies on netflix 2022

This is the story of how one of the largest and most recognizable brands in the world was made: McDonald's.

Michael Keaton stars as the shady, ruthless, and ambitious businessman Ray Kroc, who stole the McDonald brothers' fast food business out from under them.

'The Two Popes' (2019)

biographies on netflix 2022

While a movie about two Popes chatting for two hours might not sound thrilling, it actually is.

Written by "The Theory of Everything" scribe Anthony McCarten, Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins star as the future Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI, respectively.

The two men engage in conversational battles of wit, principles, and conflicting opinions as Pope Benedict's time as the head of the Catholic Church comes to an end.

'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile' (2019)

biographies on netflix 2022

In Zac Efron's darkest ever role , the "High School Musical" alum plays serial killer Ted Bundy.

Told from the point of view of his longtime girlfriend Liz (Lily Collins), who refused to believe the truth about Bundy, we learn of the horrific nature of one of America's most infamous killers.

'Mank' (2020)

biographies on netflix 2022

Nominated for 10 Oscars and winning two , David Fincher's expertly-crafted movie explores the life of Hollywood screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and how he wrote "Citizen Kane."

Oldman earned an Oscar nomination for playing Mankiewicz, while Amanda Seyfried landed her first-ever Oscar nod for her supporting performance as actress Marion Davies.

Fincher presents this story in the format of a 1940s movie itself, complete with reel-change cigarette burns, which indicate when a film reel needs to be changed.

Disclosure: Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Business Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member.

Below, you’ll find gripping crime thrillers, such as Why Did You Kill Me?, Unsolved Mysteries, and Fear City: New York vs. the Mafia. Want to see what it takes to become one of the greatest athletes in the world? Check out Beckham and Formula 1: Drive to Survive. In Beckham, the great David Beckham breaks down his career—from his early days with Manchester United to his stint with PSG (Paris Saint-Germain). Along the way, we learn about his courtship of Victoria Beckham and how international fame has shaped their lives.

The Greatest Night in Pop

The Greatest Night in Pop brilliantly details the historic recording of “We Are the World.” One night in 1985, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Tina Turner, Willie Nelson, and many more teamed up to record the anthem as a fundraiser to fight starvation in Africa. The Greatest Night in Pop takes you behind the scenes and into the studio where it all happened. Come for the music history—and stay for the vintage footage of your favorite artists.

World War II: From the Front Lines

World War II: From the Front Lines uses colorized archival footage to tell the story of World War II , as described by people who lived it. All sides of the conflict are presented in this stunning documentary, painting a full picture of one of the most devastating eras in world history.

Don’t sleep on the deeply personal Sr. , in which Robert Downey Jr. explores the life of his father—who was a well-regarded indie film director—during his final days. As Downey Jr. told Esquire in an interview about the film , “There’s a little bit of God’s grace in here.”

Bill Russell: Legend

What more is there to say about Bill Russell, who won about a zillion rings with the Boston Celtics, than “legend”? A lot, apparently. In Bill Russell: Legend , filmmaker Sam Pollard explores the life and legacy of one of basketball’s first true stars.

In Stutz , the great Jonah Hill profiles his also great therapist, Phil Stutz. If you’re currently in therapy, you’ll find Stutz to be a pretty fascinating exploration of some unconventional methods of psychotherapy . If not? Maybe you’ll finally be inspired to give it a try.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive

Here at Esquire, we’ve finally joined the cult, fandom, mass obsession, bandwagon—whatever you want to call it—of Formula 1 . Featuring the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris , the series captures honesty, beef, and emotion in a way we’ll never see from our ultra-guarded athletes stateside.

White Hot: The Rise & Fall of Abercrombie & Fitch

The saga of the once-exclusive retailer Abercrombie & Fitch is so captivating that you’ll swear you smell the inside of the store while you watch it. (Or is that Hollister?)

Our Father is Netflix-branded true-crime batshittery at its best. Or worst, really. In the film, a woman takes an at-home DNA test and finds out that she has multiple half siblings. Could a scheming fertility doctor be at the bottom of it all?

Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King

The Internet is rife with scams, and Netflix seems determined to expose every single one. In Trust No One , a Canadian crypto-exchange founder mysteriously dies, leaving $215 million of customer cash missing. The story gets more complicated when conspiracy theorists and online sleuths suggest he faked his own death and ran away with the stash.

Downfall: The Case Against Boeing

The Boeing 737 Max incidents shook the world back in 2019, when two of the massive planes crashed within months of each other, killing 346 people. This investigation into the role played by Boeing’s alleged emphasis on profit over safety seriously sullied the company’s reputation and is, sadly, still timely in 2024.

Dancing with the Birds

Deep in exotic forests around the planet, birds of paradise dance, shake their feathers, and collect the prettiest rocks they can get their beaks on to attract a mate. Dancing with the Birds, produced by the creators of Our Planet , gets up close to capture these beautiful performances from some of nature’s most bizarrely captivating creatures.

The Sparks Brothers

They’re a band and they’re brothers. That’s how Ron (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals) describe themselves at the start of The Sparks Brothers , a documentary about the quirky Los Angeles pop/rock duo. Across more than 50 years and 25 studio albums, they developed a cult following in the U.S. and recently experienced a boost in popularity after writing the score to the (polarizing) film Annette .

14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible

Six months and six days. That’s how long it took Nims Purja to climb the world’s 14 tallest mountains, all above 8,000 meters. The journey is brilliantly documented in 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible . After you’ve watched the film, make sure to read our interview with Purja .

The Tinder Swindler

The Tinder Swindler is absurdist true crime at its best. The film follows the sins of Simon Leviev, who allegedly posed as a billionaire diamond heir on Tinder so he could con money from women. Guess what? He’s still out there. Somewhere .

Early in 2021, we saw the definitive portrait of arguably the greatest footballer of all time: Pelé. The film is both a celebration of the electric Brazilian and an unflinching look at the mistakes he made during his career.

Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami

Throughout the 1980s, Willie Falcon and Sal Magluta controlled the largest cocaine smuggling organization on the East Coast and one of the biggest in the world, making more than $2 billion in cash by bringing cocaine into the U.S. from Colombia via Miami. Through interviews with their close friends and co-conspirators, this docuseries details everything from the early days of their operation to the various murders, bribes, trials, convictions, and escapes in this notorious case.

This German sports documentary on the life of seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher is an inside look at his early years, his rise to prominence, and his current rehabilitation at the family’s home following his 2013 skiing accident.

Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed

When you think of Bob Ross, you probably recall his calming voice, his joyful landscapes, maybe even his signature Afro. But this doc paints a sinister portrait of the beloved painter’s legacy, examining the complicated legal battles that ensued over the use of Ross’s name following his 1995 death.

My Octopus Teacher

The 2020 Oscar winner for best documentary, My Octopus Teacher follows one man on his journey to develop a relationship with an octopus off the Cape Town coast. It’s as strange as it sounds, but also a fascinating and utterly unique look at nature.

Solito: A Memoir , by Javier Zamora

When he was 9, Zamora left El Salvador to join his parents in the United States — a dangerous trek in the company of strangers that lasted for more than two months, a far cry from the two-week adventure he had envisioned. Stay True: A Memoir , by Hua Hsu

A New Yorker staff writer reflects on a life-changing college friendship cut short by tragedy. Hsu — interested in counterculture, zines and above all music — seemed to have little in common with Ken, a Dave Matthews Band-loving fraternity brother, with the exception of their Asian American heritage. In spite of their differences, they forged a close bond; this is both a memoir of their relationship but also Hsu’s journey to adulthood as he makes sense of his grief.

Doubleday, Sept. 27

A Thousand Words

Did you know

  • Trivia This film is based on the 2000 novel "Blonde" by Joyce Carol Oates , which is a fictionalized account inspired by the life of Marilyn Monroe , not an actual biography. Oates insisted that the novel is a work of fiction that should not be regarded as a biography. Oates said that she didn't have anything to do with the making of this film, though once in a while, director Andrew Dominik would get in contact with her, and that she was given an almost-final cut in 2020 and she has praised the film ever since. The novel had been previously adapted into a two-part miniseries: Blonde (2001) , starring Poppy Montgomery as Monroe.
  • Goofs Marilyn greets the Secret Service agents at her door with: "You were expecting maybe Mother Teresa ?" Mother Teresa had not gained international recognition in 1962. It's highly doubtful Marilyn would have known who she was.

The 15 Best Hindi Movies On Netflix

"bring it back to the streets": fast & furious 12 may return franchise to its la roots, 10 things that happen in every harry potter book.

Whether it's behind the scenes of a movie franchise or a famous musician, die-hard fans relish the opportunity to get a deeper look into the workings of an artist.  As one of the top streaming platforms, Netflix has created–and given viewers access to–riveting stories focussing on some of the music industry's top artists.

Viewers are captivated by the emotional and heartfelt struggles artists face in making names for themselves, and they love watching them share their stories through documentaries. A variety of music documentaries on Netflix show the rise and fall of Grammy-winning artists, their lives before fame, and how they adjust to life in the limelight.

Updated on June 30th, 2022, by Shawn S. Lealos: While they might not be as popular as a scripted drama series like Stranger Things or a superhero movie like Spider-Man: No Way Home , there is a lot to love about a good music documentary. While Netflix will always offer the mainstream releases like those above, the streaming giant also knows that one key to keeping its subscription totals from dropping is to offer niche things that a smaller, but an important, group of subscribers want to see. Music documentaries fit that description, with some offering concert footage, others offering a look at the lives and travels of the musicians, and others looking posthumously at the greats of yesteryear. Since the streaming service often switches out what they offer, this list removed those docs that left and added some more great music documentaries on Netflix.

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)

If there is one iconic and legendary filmmaker who loves to make music documentaries, it is Martin Scorsese. He created one of the most legendary music documentaries of all time in the 1970s with  The Last Waltz , with The Band's final concert. One singer at that show who performed was Bob Dylan and Scorsese has since made two documentaries about that legendary singer as well.

No Direction Home  is one of the best music documentaries on Netflix, released in 2005. It tells the story of Dylans' life from his arrival in New York in 1961 and his retirement from touring in 1966.

The Sparks Brothers (2021)

Edgar Wright had a great year in 2021 when it came to movies. He released the horror-thriller  Last Night in Soho and then followed that up with a documentary titled The Sparks Brothers , following the careers of the legendary and iconic indie music sensations.

The great news is that The Sparks Brothers is on Netflix now for all to see. For those unaware,  The Sparks Brothers spent their entire career overlooked and ahead of the curve, meaning they made music that would be popular a few years later, but never had a chance to enjoy the height of that surge because they always changed their styles to whatever they felt was next. This music documentary on Netflix is possibly even better for people who have never heard of the band.

The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story (2019)

One of the most iconic rock bands in history is Queen, and their performances and songs recorded with the late Freddy Mercury remain legendary. However, after Mercury died, the band mostly disappeared outside of some concerts with names like George Michael and Eddie Vedder taking the lead role.

That all changed when Queen hired American Idol finalist Adam Lambert to become their new lead singer. The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story is an original documentary on Netflix that tells the story of how the young singer helped bring the band back to the spotlight again.

ReMastered: The Two Killings Of Sam Cooke (2019)

Netflix has an original documentary series called ReMastered which tells the story in each doc about different musical artists. One of the best in the series hit in 2019 with  The Two Killings of Sam Cooke . The story is a hybrid mix of a music documentary and a true crime story as it focuses on the murder of Sam Cooke in 1964 at the age of 33.

Sam Cooke was a soul singer who was also outspoken on civil rights issues. The title refers to how Sam Cooke died twice - once literally and once was the death of his promising musical career, with part of the documentary showing how important his music was in spreading his message of equality. Fans might also remember the name Sam Cooke from the movie One Night in Miami .

If I Leave Here Tomorrow (2018)

When looking through the music documentaries on Netflix, there is one titled  If I Leave Here Tomorrow and it tells the story of the legendary southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. It mostly focuses on lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and is put together with interviews and archival footage.

The band formed in 1964 and became major stars in the 1970s thanks to songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Freebird." Sadly, a plane crash in 1977 killed Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines, and left the rest of the band members seriously injured. This documentary on Netflix looks at the band up to that point.

Shawn Mendes: In Wonder (2020)

Shawn Mendes has never shied away from sharing his life with his fans, as it gives him the ability to connect with them on a deeper level. In 2020, Netflix released Shawn Mendes: In Wonder,  which chronicles the past few years of his life and his journey to a bigger level of stardom.

The documentary showcases Mendes in a much more raw form, chronicling his struggles with anxiety and depression—even the nights where he feels the most alone. Among it all is his devotion to family, fans, and even his deep romance with fellow artist Camilla Cabello.

Keith Richards: Under The Influence (2015)

The notorious guitarist of the world-renown rock band The Rolling Stones, Netflix's 2015 documentary Keith Richards: Under The Influence offers a glimpse into the life of the aging rocker. Tracking his progress in the studio as he records a solo album while simultaneously recounting how he attained fame, it's a story all Stones fans need to hear.

Borrowing a few elements from his autobiography Life , Under the Influence examines Richards' philosophies on everything from classic blues singers to the human condition. It's one of the most fascinating music documentaries on Netflix, even for those who may not be familiar with the musician.

What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015)

Many famed artists from generations gone by have helped define music history. One of these artists is American singer, Nina Simone, who not only awed with her vocals but also inspired others with her civil rights activism. The music documentary on Netflix,  What Happened, Miss Simone? features never-seen-before archival footage of the singer, as well as interviews with her daughter and family.

The music documentary is eye-opening, as it chronicles Simon's rise as one of the most profound jazz singers. Fans also get to see Simone's story of becoming an activist determined to take a stance.

Quincy (2018)

Simply titled  Quincy , this 2018 Netflix documentary is an intimate look into the life and career of Quincy Jones. The movie hit big and even won the Grammy for Best Music Film at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Co-directed by Jones' daughter Rashida Jones , the movie tells the immense story of the 27 Grammy award-winning industry giant.

From his early days in childhood to his rise in music, the movie tells it all. Viewers get to see the artist in his prime to his more personal battles with health issues and the industry. There are even heartwarming interviews and stories of Hollywood's and the music industry's finest, depicting him as one of the greatest of all time.

BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky (2020)

Television, movies, and the music industry have been hit hard with a deep love and admiration for K-Pop and South Korean culture. K-Pop bands like BTS and BlackPink have taken over billboard charts and reached global stardom. In 2020, Netflix released the documentary  BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky,  which focuses on the journey of Korea's top girl group BlackPink.

Fans of K-Pop and even newcomers can watch the personal stories of four young girls from different walks of life strive for the same dream. From their exhausting days as trainees to sold-out arenas around the world, BlackPink successfully became the top girl group in K-Pop music history.

Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004)

Originally released in 2004, Some Kind of Monster catalog's the development of Metallica's most reviled album, St. Anger, along with all of the difficulties and infighting that came with it. Considered by members of the band to be Metallica's darkest period , Some Kind of Monster highlights the bleak realities that sometimes come with fame.

With band co-founders James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich constantly at each other's throats, the world's most recognizable heavy metal band seems to be falling apart at the seams. Fortunately, they would endure these turmoils and come out on the other side with a hard-hitting and insightful piece of heavy metal media.

Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell (2021)

There are countless documentaries and specials about the life of rapper Christopher Wallace, A.K.A. The Notorious B.I.G, though many of them place a major emphasis on his mysterious death. The 2021 documentary Biggie: I Got A Story to Tell not only gives viewers rare footage of the rapper and in-depth interviews, but it's also a celebration of his life and career.

Among the best music documentaries on Netflix, this one has it all, from Biggie's early years to his journey to becoming the rap icon he was destined to become. Told through interviews and stories from his family and friends, Biggie is showcased as a multi-dimensional artist and person whose life ended tragically at the height of his career.

Homecoming (2019)

Homecoming  is considered to be a concert film, but many see it as an inside look and documentary about Beyoncé's creative process and her impact on a cultural movement. Written and directed by Beyoncé herself, the movie centers around the events leading up to and the day of her performance at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The movie received unanimous critical acclaim, with many praising it for its impactful moments, behind-the-scenes shots, and showing what makes Beyoncé the global icon that she is. There's so much more, as the documentary also details how Beyoncé is the first black woman to headline the festival and the impact of this.

Gaga: Five Foot Two (2017)

In 2017, Netflix released a cinéma vérité style documentary titled Gaga: Five Foot Two about the hit artist, Lady Gaga. The movie takes place over a year, showcasing the personal life of Gaga, from meeting her fans, working on new music, and even her battle with chronic pain caused by the onset of fibromyalgia.

The timeline of the movie is specific, as it takes place as Gaga is in the process of creating her fifth studio album, "Joanne." There's just about everything to explore here, from her Super Bowl performance and her emotional struggles to her guest role in American Horror Story .

ReMastered: Devil at the Crossroads

Posthumously dubbed the "King of the Delta Blues Singers," Robert Johnson is often considered to be one of the most influential guitarists of all time. Known for his uncanny skill, he lived an enigmatic and strange life, and it was rumored that he had sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his amazing abilities as a musician.

Over the decades, speculation and rumor melded into an urban legend, and Johnson's legacy is often treated as something akin to an American folktale. Haunted by either the Devil himself or demons of his own making, Robert Johnson was a fascinating musician whose tale demands attention .

Miss Americana (2020)

Just about everyone has heard of Taylor Swift at this point, and fans of the singer and even those who aren't will be moved and awe-struck by the story told in this, one of the best music documentaries on Netflix. It takes place as Swift begins her 2019 album" Lover."

Being in the limelight for so many years, Swift reveals her inner turmoil and struggles that she kept from the public. The movie uses interviews, camera footage, home videos, and more, as well as her own voice to tell her story of battling body dysmorphia, an eating disorder, and even the scrutiny she faces on the internet.

'Young Sheldon' (2015 - 2021)

Rotten tomatoes: 76% | imdb: 7.8/10, young sheldon.

Release Date September 25, 2017

Creator Chuck Lorre & Steven Molaro

Cast Jim Parsons, Iain Armitage, Wallace Shawn, Annie Potts

Genres Comedy

Created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro for CBS, Young Sheldon is a coming-of-age sitcom that’s a prequel to Lorre’s The Big Bang Theory . Set between 1989 and 1994, the show follows child prodigy Sheldon Cooper, with Iain Armitage starring as young Sheldon. The series also stars Zoe Perry , Lance Barber , Montana Jordan , and more, with Jim Parsons , who plays the adult Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory , serving as the narrator. While sitcom spin-offs have largely been unsuccessful, Young Sheldon is an exception to the rule. Though built on the popularity of the adult Sheldon, the prequel show’s well-crafted story and delightful cast give it the legs it needs to stand on its own. With laughs and heart a-plenty, the show is a relatable and thoroughly enjoyable experience that’s been praised by critics and fans alike. Another spin-off, Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage , is already in the works.

'A Man in Full' (2024)

Rotten tomatoes: 43% | imdb: 6.6/10, a man in full.

Release Date May 2, 2024

Cast Jeff Daniels, Lucy Liu, Diane Lane, Chant Adams, William Jackson Harper, Jon Michael Hill, Tom Pelphrey, Sarah Jones, Aml Ameen

Genres Drama

A drama limited series starring Jeff Daniels and Diane Lane , A Man in Full was created by David E. Kelley and is based on the Tom Wolfe novel of the same name. Directed by Regina King and Thomas Schlamme , the six-episode series follows a real estate mogul facing bankruptcy who must defend what remains of his empire from political and business interests who want to capitalize on his misfortune. The series also stars Tom Pelphrey , Sarah Jones , Lucy Liu , and more. A Man in Full has received rather mixed reviews from critics. However, the show’s saving grace is its ensemble cast, who deliver characteristically brilliant performances even when the plot slips to mediocrity. Jeff Daniels is as charismatic as ever, playing a nuanced character with plenty of flaws who still tries as much as he can to be better. Is it as good as the book? Maybe not, but A Man in Full does make for an interesting, easily bingeable watch that’s well-directed and well-acted.

'Killing Eve' (2018 - 2022)

Rotten tomatoes: 80% | imdb: 8.1/10, killing eve.

Release Date April 8, 2018

Behind the camera, each season was led by a different female head writer, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Season 1, Emerald Fennell for Season 2, Suzanne Heathcote for Season 3, and Laura Neal for Season 4. Though the show’s reviews dipped a bit in its latter half, the first two seasons of Killing Eve were acclaimed by critics and earned a number of accolades. Both Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer deliver amazing performances in the lead roles, with Oh winning a Golden Globe and Comer receiving a Primetime Emmy. The series presents a unique spin on the spy thriller, taking the usual cat-and-mouse games of the genre and using them to explore two fascinating personalities through a story that holds grit and humor in equal measure.

'Baby Reindeer' (2024)

Rotten tomatoes: 83% | imdb: 8.2/10, baby reindeer (2024).

Release Date April 11, 2024

Cast Nava Mau, Danny Kirrane, Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning

Genres Biography, Drama

Creator(s) Richard Gadd

Read Our Review A gripping drama-thriller miniseries based on the autobiographical one-man show of the same name, Baby Reindeer is created by and stars Scottish comedian Richard Gadd . Gadd plays young comedian Donny, who finds himself being stalked by a mysterious woman named Martha ( Jessica Gunning ). The show’s cast also includes Nava Mau , Tom Goodman-Hill , Hugh Coles , Michael Wildman , Danny Kirrane , Shalom Brune-Franklin , Nina Sosanya , Thomas Coombes , and Laura Smyth . Inspired by Gadd’s real-life experiences, the seven-episode series has earned widespread acclaim from critics, with praise for the performances, writing, and emotional complexity. Though it’s primarily a dark thriller story, there’s an offbeat sense of humor to Baby Reindeer that highlights the humanity of its characters. The show has tonal similarities to another Netflix thriller, The End of the F***ing World (both series are produced by Clerkenwell Films), and if you enjoyed that show, then you’re going to really love Baby Reindeer .

'Sex and the City' (1998 - 2004)

The series stars Sarah Jessica Parker , Kristin Davis , Cynthia Nixon , and Kim Cattrall . Over its six seasons on air, Sex and the City has been the subject of both acclaim and criticism. Its characters and storylines have earned the show legions of fans, and it is largely credited with making HBO the industry powerhouse it is today. The series has earned many accolades, including seven Primetime Emmy Awards, eight Golden Globes, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Perhaps the most surprising thing of all is that the show still attracts new audiences, with its stories of female friendship continuing to inspire a new generation of fans. Sex and the City ’s success has led to two feature films, a prequel television series, and a sequel show, And Just Like That , which is set to release its third season in 2025.

'Girls5Eva' (2021 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 97% | imdb: 7.3/10.

Release Date May 6, 2021

Creator Meredith Scardino

Cast Paula Pell, sara bareilles, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps

Genres Comedy, Musical

Meredith Scardino ’s Girls5Eva is a musical sitcom that follows the surviving members of a washed-up 1990s girl group who get an unexpected second shot at stardom when a rising rapper samples their only hit song. The show stars Sara Bareilles , Busy Philipps , Paula Pell , and Renée Elise Goldsberry as the titular girl group. Originally a Peacock show, the series ran for two seasons on the NBC streamer before moving to Netflix for Season 3. A smartly written and extremely funny show, Girls5Eva is the perfect blend of comedy and music, with just a dash of nostalgia thrown in. The show’s four leads are endlessly entertaining and effortlessly funny, and they’ve only gotten better with each new season. Season 3, the show’s latest chapter, is easily the best of all, taking all the elements that made the first two seasons successful and kicking it up a notch. Whether you’re watching it with your own friend group or on your own, Girls5Eva is a delightful watch that will not let you down.

'Ripley' (2024 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 85% | imdb: 8.0/10.

Cast Pasquale Esposito, Maurizio Lombardi, Johnny Flynn, Dakota Fanning, Andrew Scott

Genres Drama, Thriller, Crime

Based on Patricia Highsmith ’s Tom Ripley novels, Steven Zaillian ’s Ripley is an eight-episode miniseries that stars Dakota Fanning , Johnny Flynn , and Eliot Sumner , with Andrew Scott in the lead role. Ripley (Scott) is a grifter from New York who is hired to travel to Italy and convince the son of a shipping magnate to return home. What his employers and new acquaintances don’t realize is that Ripley is a darkly ambitious man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Ripley is, without a doubt, one of the single most stunning productions that Netflix has ever brought to its audiences. Part of the reason for that is its ensemble cast and their nuanced performances, with Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning delivering some of their best work ever. But the real highlight of the show is its breathtaking cinematography. The series is entirely in black and white, taking inspiration from classic cinema and Renaissance art to craft a beautifully composed visual experience that’s so beautiful you just can’t look away.

Cast Maja Schne, Karoline Eichhorn, Jordis Triebel, Louis Hofmann

Read Our Review

Dark is a German sci-fi thriller TV series created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese . The show begins in the small German town of Winden, where two children go missing under mysterious circumstances. The series follows four interconnected families – the Nielsen, Tiedemann, Doppler, and Kahnwald families – as they uncover a time travel conspiracy that spans several generations.

Dark is a mind-bending series that seamlessly blends internal family drama with the complexities of time travel. It stands out as a rare gem, maintaining a consistently high quality throughout its entirety. The series delves into the idea of time loops and paradoxes, constructing an intricate narrative where the actions of characters in one time period have repercussions in others. Additionally, it may prove challenging for individuals who struggle with facial recognition, as the complex web of characters necessitates viewers to recall details in order to comprehend the full plot. Despite that, each character is intricately developed with profound character arcs and emotions. This depth enables viewers to form connections with the characters and comprehend their motivations. Furthermore, Dark explores philosophical and existential themes surrounding determinism, free will, and the repercussions of actions. It encourages viewers to contemplate the essence of time and human decision-making. - Jessie Nguyen

'I Think You Should Leave' (2019 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 97% | imdb: 8.0/10, i think you should leave with tim robinson.

Release Date April 23, 2019

Cast Patti Harrison, Conner O'Malley, Tim Robinson, Sam Richardson

Main Genre Comedy

I Think You Should Leave is a sketch comedy series starring co-creator Tim Robinson . A former Saturday Night Live writer, Robinson has recruited SNL veterans, including Andy Samberg , Will Forte ( The Great North ), Vanessa Bayer ( I Love That For You ), and Cecily Strong ( Schmigadoon! ), to appear as guest stars on his series. With each sketch, Robinson leans heavily into cringe comedy, focusing on societal or professional faux pas followed by refusal to concede the mistake. Incorporating potty humor, surreal elements, and surprising quips, I Think You Should Leave often subverts expectations.

Reigniting the flame of sketch-comedy outside of SNL or political-leaning shows, I Think You Should Leave doesn’t take itself too seriously, welcoming escapism for audiences with bizarre (and often demented) yet undeniably humorous scenarios. - Yael Tygiel

'Derry Girls' (2018 - 2022)

Derry Girls blends light political satire with multi-generational family shenanigans and frenzied teenage girl energy, resulting in a clever and sometimes touching laugh-out-loud series. Regardless of background, or even knowledge of the political climate in 1990s Ireland, Derry Girls is undeniably funny, charming, and worth a binge. - Yael Tygiel

'Our Planet' (2019 - 2023)

Rotten tomatoes: 96% | imdb: 9.3/10.

Release Date April 5, 2019

Cast David Attenborough

Genres Documentary

Our Planet is a British nature documentary series created for Netflix. The show highlights the wildlife and natural marvels across eight distinct ecosystems. Notably, it stands out for its increased emphasis on the human impact on the environment compared to conventional nature documentaries. The narrative revolves around the profound effects of climate change on all living creatures. Our Planet is narrated by David Attenborough . The show consists of two seasons and 12 episodes in total, with a special one-hour behind-the-scene episode.

Enriched with breathtaking landscapes, captivating visuals, and awe-inspiring natural phenomena, Our Planet is undeniably a visual marvel. However, it also holds a somber note as it presents viewers with the most unfiltered footage of nature, exposing its harsh realities and cruelties. Furthermore, Attenborough's voice complements the show seamlessly, transporting us directly into the heart of nature as we navigate the wilderness through his narration. Even in his 90s, he continues to be one of the most prominent voices cautioning against the impending ecological crisis. Additionally, although the series doesn't explicitly provide a blueprint for addressing this catastrophic issue, it does offer reassurance that the planet has the potential to recover, provided we are willing to collaborate. - Jessie Nguyen

'Big Mouth' (2017 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 94% | imdb: 7.8/10.

Release Date September 29, 2017

Cast Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Jason Mantzoukas, John Mulaney, Pamela Adlon, Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph

Genres Animation, Comedy

Created by Andrew Goldberg , Nick Kroll , Mark Levin , and Jennifer Flackett for Netflix, Big Mouth is an American adult animated coming-of-age sitcom that centers on a group of middle school students in the Westchester County suburbs of New York, featuring best friends Nick Birch (voiced by Kroll) and Andrew Glouberman (voiced by John Mulaney ) as they struggle with issues related to sexual arousal and masturbation during puberty.

Big Mouth astonished viewers by surpassing mere crass humor, demonstrating its depth as a delicately crafted contemplation on the experience of growing up. Leveraging the creative liberty afforded by Netflix, the series delves into the initial stages of puberty, examining the physical, mental, and emotional challenges that boys and girls encounter during this transformative period. Furthermore, the voice performances exhibit strength and inspiration, while the depicted friendships feel authentic, and the risqué elements are largely executed with cleverness. Big Mouth is poised to evoke memories in adult viewers, whether they be pleasant or cringe-worthy. Regardless, the show provides a compelling journey down memory lane, offering parents an opportunity to gain insight into their children's experiences, given its clear unsuitability for younger audiences. - Jessie Nguyen

'Orange is the New Black' (2013 - 2019)

Rotten tomatoes: 90% | imdb: 8.0/10, orange is the new black (2013).

Release Date July 11, 2013

Cast Kate Mulgrew, Taylor Schilling, Danielle Brooks, Nick Sandow, Taryn Manning, Selenis Leyva, Natasha Lyonne, Laura Prepon

Based on Piper Kerman 's 2010 memoir Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison , Orange is the New Black is a Netflix show that follows Piper Chapman ( Taylor Schilling ) a woman in her thirties living in New York City who is sentenced to prison for her involvement in a drug trafficking crime that occurred a decade earlier. The series centers on Chapman, alongside her fellow inmates and prison guards’ lives and challenges, within the confines of Litchfield Penitentiary.

Orange is the New Black can be risqué and occasionally embellished, yet it paints a captivating picture of a group of imperfect characters grappling with the consequences of either their unfortunate circumstances or the poor decisions they've made. The series has received acclaim for showcasing a diverse ensemble cast, with characters hailing from various backgrounds, ethnicities, and socio-economic statuses. It delves into their individual stories, offering a nuanced portrayal of women within a prison setting. Orange is the New Black also doesn't shy away from addressing relevant social issues such as racial inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, gender dynamics, and the flaws within the criminal justice system. In addition, while it addresses serious and thought-provoking issues, it also incorporates humor, creating a show with emotional depth and moments of levity. - Jessie Nguyen

'Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos' (2018 - Present)

Rotten tomatoes: 100% | imdb: 8.3/10, the dragon prince.

Release Date September 14, 2018

Cast Racquel Belmonte, Sasha Rojen, Paula Burrows, Jack De Sena

Main Genre Animation

Genres Animation, Action, Adventure

For thousands of years, the elves and dragons of Xadia have loathed humanity, whom they banished to the West for inventing dark magic, which drains the magic from living things. Now, war is brewing when the humans kill the Dragon King and his only egg. In retaliation, Moonshadow Elves are sent to kill King Harrow ( Luc Roderique ) and Prince Ezran ( Sasha Rojen ) in retribution. One of the assassins, Rayla (Paula Burrows), discovers that the egg is still alive. With Prince Ezran and his older half-sibling, Callum ( Jack DeSena ), she ventures east in order to return the egg to the Dragon Queen and hopefully avert the war.

The Dragon Prince is one of Netflix’s flagship animated shows, written by Aaron Ehasz , the head writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender . It does a good job serving as a successor to Avatar’s unique blend of humor and rich worldbuilding, though it doesn’t do as good of a job with its pacing and subplots. Where it does excel is with its character writing. Every character goes through a highly personal and dark bit of development with exciting payoffs. The best scenes involve the villains, who are some of the best-written and most compelling characters. - Tyler B. Searle
