I went to college for free thanks to a scholarship. I'm still debating whether it was worth it.

  • I used my energy and resources in high school to get a full cost-of-attendance scholarship.
  • I struggled to find time for myself in college because of the demands of my scholarship program.
  • I'm now learning to explore who I am outside education.

Insider Today

My vision in high school was to complete my college degree for free. I am now a year post-college graduation, and I know that I achieved my goal, but it wasn't without sacrifice — both before and during my years in college.

Some universities offer scholarships with no strings attached: The money is yours for tuition and other expenses. Other universities —like mine — offer program-based scholarships that require your involvement in their program traditions.

Those traditions tarnished some of my college experience , especially coming from an exhaustive high school career where I put too much pressure on myself. But looking back, I still believe this was the reward I deserved for my effort in high school.

I dedicated my time in high school to achieving my scholarship dream

In my senior year in high school, I was selected for a full cost of attendance scholarship program.

I had been working toward this for four years. I loaded my schedule with AP classes and had many long nights studying for tests and working on projects. I took the ACT and SAT four times — each costing hundreds of dollars. I hosted school events and joined clubs, hoping to become a part of the leadership team.

I even memorized chapters of my anatomy book in high school and rewrote them on a whiteboard to get a 102% on my exam. Calculating my high school GPA yearly to determine if I would move up in rank from seven to one was a thrill.

I did this all in the name of no student debt and a prestigious college experience. I loved the challenge of working toward a goal I created for myself. It showed me that I could reach for big dreams and grasp them.

In hindsight, I would tell my high school self to stay passionate but let go of the pressure for perfection and instead focus on trying my best. Maybe knowing I was doing a good job would have stopped me from crying over a B in geometry.

Being in the scholarship program left me with mixed feelings

The program encouraged me to focus less on grades and more on community impact, leading me to create a podcast helping incoming students better adjust to college life. The program also prompted me to develop meaningful friendships among the people in my cohort — one of whom is now my husband .

Related stories

However, I found that I had to give too much of myself to the scholarship program. It unexpectedly felt overwhelming and sometimes all-consuming when all I wanted to do was focus on my college experience. It left no room for me to explore who I really am.

My time in college was different than that of previous cohorts of students because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic mainly affected opportunities for scholarship-funded travel and reduced the events we could attend. These elements were unfortunate to miss out on, but ultimately, I was grateful for the break from the program to explore my individuality.

I'm now exploring who I am post-college

Since college, I've learned the power of advocating for myself in academic settings and setting boundaries around my time. I typically let feelings of guilt and obligation guide my decision-making, and I'm sure this affected my experiences in the scholarship program.

The program helped me meet my now husband and even provided a fresh financial start after graduation, but it also imposed on my sense of self.

I've spent the last year challenging higher education's notions surrounding achievement, but I also know I couldn't afford my current lifestyle with student loans.

So, I'm still trying to decide if it was worth it.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, children of military - college scholarships.

Hey everyone, I'm a junior and my parent is in the military. I've heard something about children of military personnel being eligible for certain college scholarships. Can anyone clarify if this is true, and if so, how I might apply for these scholarships?

Absolutely, as a child of a military service member, you have access to an array of scholarships designed specifically for military dependents, covering partial to even substantial amounts of college cost. Here's a brief rundown of some you may find applicable.

The Armed Forces Crossroads Scholarships for Military Children Program offers scholarships to eligible children of active-duty, reserve/guard, or retired military commissary customers. Grades, community service, leadership, and extracurricular activities are all considered in this process.

Another notable scholarship is the American Legion Legacy Scholarship. It is available for children of veterans who died on active duty post 9/11 or have a combined disability rating of 50% or greater from the Veterans Affairs office.

Additionally, the Blue Star Families Scholarship offers programs for military dependents aiming to ease financial stress. The Fisher House Foundation's Scholarships for Military Children program is another option, as well as the Heroes' Legacy Scholarships for deserving youth of those who have fallen or become disabled through their active military service since September 11, 2001.

In terms of applying, each scholarship has its own process and timeline. Generally, they require filling out an application form, including information about your military parent, providing your academic records, and often writing an essay. Always make sure to closely read the eligibility requirements and application instructions.

Lastly, remember to also explore scholarships beyond those tied to your parent's military service. Many colleges, organizations, and companies offer scholarships based on academic merit, community service, extracurricular activities, or other specific criteria.

And of course, remember to fill out your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to qualify for need-based financial aid. The student aid index (SAI) derived from this document will help colleges determine your eligibility for financial aid.

Best of luck with your scholarship search!

  • Able to verify a minimum overall B/3.0 GPA in high school coursework.

Suggested Areas of Focus

We are sharing several prompts to choose from and inspire you, but don’t limit your thinking to only these ideas.

  • The AEC industry needs more bright minds to develop buildings of the future. Where is the greatest need for additional workers? Is it on construction sites, in engineering and design firms, or in facility management? What advantages or aspects of these jobs would interest students to pursue these careers? How would YOU get your friends interested in learning more about careers in Sustainable Construction?
  • Schools: What’s the environmental impact of your high school? Or all the facilities in your entire school district. How can your school lower its/their impact? Water, waste, and energy reduction? Solar panels on the roof?
  • There’s probably a lot of new commercial construction in your area. How does it impact your community and can it be done differently to reduce negative impacts? What environmental changes are happening? Removing the natural environment, replacing fields and trees with hardscapes like buildings and paved areas that don’t absorb rainwater?
  • Sustainable construction technology is advancing quickly. What’s one product or group of products that haven’t been updated to meet cleaner environmental standards? What product is ripe for innovation? Why is it impactful and what’s the upside to changing it? How would you make it better?
  • Come up with your own idea! Just be sure you follow the 4 required sections and focus on a problem or opportunity within Architecture, Design, Engineering, Construction, or Facility Management and how advances in sustainability measures could solve it.

SmartSolar believes in living sustainably—and that doesn’t mean giving up the comforts of life! There are small choices we can make each day that won’t have a negative impact on the earth, and we want to reward one student who strives to make these good choices.

This scholarship seeks to support motivated students who actively fight against climate change and have goals for how to combat it in the future.

Any high school senior, undergraduate, or graduate student who makes sustainable everyday choices may apply for this scholarship.

To apply, tell us what you think is the most impactful way to combat climate change and how you strive to fight climate change in your life.

What do you think is the most impactful way to combat climate change? In what ways do you strive to fight climate change in your life?

The Ultimate List of Sustainability Scholarships

The-Ultimate-List-of-Sustainability-Scholarships

How to Find Sustainability Scholarships

Sustainability scholarship list, important information to remember when applying for scholarships.

As environmental issues grow increasingly urgent due to our changing climate , increasingly frequent disasters and a threatening scarcity of resources , more organizations are supporting the need for action from young scholars and new innovators.

Unfortunately, resources and educational opportunities are not equitable, and so not everyone is afforded the same opportunity to attend university, to travel in order to develop their skills or to work and collaborate with other, equally passionate students. This is untenable, as these global issues require study and action from all regions in order to bring about effective change.

Environmental scholarships and sustainability scholarships can help to provide underprivileged students with financial aid to travel and attend programs in sustainability, global health and social justice. These environmental studies scholarships are especially helpful for international students who wish to attend specific programs, who, in turn, can bring different perspectives and new approaches.

Beyond helping with tuition and travel costs, scholarships can:

  • Highlight a student’s achievements
  • Provide connections with a wide network of contacts
  • Distinguish graduates from other job candidates

There are many, many scholarships available for students, but they’re not always easy to find, and many have specific application requirements or limited timelines. For those U.S. nationals or international students looking to study within the U.S. we recommend:

  • Using the U.S. Department of Labor’s scholarship search tool to research potential scholarships, grants and funds related to areas of study in sustainability.
  • Contacting the education agency of your state, territory or commonwealth to ask for information about available scholarships for environmental or sustainability studies.

For U.S. and international students interested in studying abroad, we recommend:

  • Performing a search on International Scholarships for available scholarships and loans.
  • Searching the IEFA database for international scholarships and financial aid assistance.
  • Reviewing active scholarship programs offered by the World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency.

High School Class of 2021

The college application process has been a stressful one, but CollegeXpress has eased some of that stress with its readily available college resources. At the beginning of the process, I frequently used the college search feature, and now that I’m almost done applying, I’ve started using the scholarship search. Both of these resources have made it easier to find relevant information.

CollegeXpress helped me gain interest in many colleges/universities and many scholarships. I would say the most helpful thing CollegeXpress has done for me is sending me emails that tell me certain types of colleges are interested in me as well as emails about scholarships that I can look at and possibly apply for.

This whole website has helped me overcome the attitude I had before. I was scared to even approach the thought of college because it was so much. I knew it wasn’t just a few easy steps, and I panicked mostly, instead of actually trying. Without realizing it, CollegeXpress did exactly what I usually do when I panic, which is take it one step at a time. With college I forget that because it’s more than just a small to-do list, but this website was really helpful and overall amazing. So thank you!

I discovered CollegeXpress while embarking on my college search journey as an excited—but scared and way confused—high schooler without a counselor or college-bound sibling to give me advice. Let me tell you, I’m so glad that I stumbled on this community! CollegeXpress helped me find potential colleges and keep application deadlines straight. It gave me a great list of scholarships, and the blogs and emails made me feel like I wasn’t going it alone. Almost three years later and with freshman year of college down, I still love the CollegeXpress vibe so much that I’m writing for them. I’d recommend this site to anyone!
