Book Review: “Subterranean” by James Rollins

subterranean james rollins book review

Ashley Carter is a single mom (to Jason) and a Paleoanthropology Assistant Professor specializing in cliff-dwelling primatives.

What in the world would the U.S. Government want her for?

Well, they need her to lead a team of biologists, geologists, and caving experts on a “research” mission beneath the Antarctic Ice Shelf. Ashley is not convinced she wants to do this until Dr. Blakely shows her a statuette made completely out of diamond that was taken from the, mostly unexplored, caves under Mount Erebus, Antarctica.

Ashley’s team will explore and research the areas caves, dwellings, and to learn as much as they can about life (if there is any) under the ice shelf.

A perfectly safe research expedition.

Agreeing to lead the team as long as Jason can come along (he will stay in the saftey of Alpha Base while the team is exploring). Ashley meets the remainder of her team: Ben an Australian cave expert, Linda a biologist, Khalid a geologist, and three military men for protection: Major Michaelson, U.S. Marines, and two Navy SEALs.

Protection? Wait…..I thought this was a perfectly safe research expedition?

Ooops…

Below the ice shelf the team discovers unimaginable beauty, intelligent, highly evolved, marsupials and death and destruction from vicious beasts that are both intelligent and deadly.

To make matters worse: One of the team members is claustrophobic, one is telepathic, and one……..is a traitor.

To find out what happens, you will have to read the book.

“Subterranean” is a fast-paced action-packed adventure that you have to put down just to catch your breath. I found myself looking a few pages ahead just so I could try to prepare myself for the next shocking twist.

I never was fully prepared, but, that’s James Rollins for you. 🙂

A scientific exploration team has been handpicked to explore a series of subterranean tunnels beneath an island in Antarctica. Already some discoveries have been made that raise questions about what can be found beneath the ice, but nothing can prepare them for what they will find down there, what creatures may still lurk in these tunnels.

But they do know one thing, they are not the first team to find themselves down in the tunnels. That other team vanished without a trace. This is why this new team must be prepared for what may be to come even if this means bringing marines down into the tunnels with them.

The first thing I will say about this is a thriller. It’s written for suspense and the few quiet moments that go between the high tension scenes. Once the plot gets going there is no stopping it. I’ve read a few thrillers that I feel are structured very similarly to this one. That’s okay, because sometimes you just need a good suspenseful book with predictable story beats.

My favourite part of this book were the ideas for the creatures and plants within the tunnel systems. I don’t want to go into detail so I’m not spoiling it, but every single time the ecology of the tunnels was brought up and discussed by the characters I found myself more interested in the story. The ecology just makes sense to me because James Rollins made it work. The tunnels also felt like some place I would never like to be.

Aside from a part or two that didn’t age that well, I enjoyed this book.

Personal Rating: 3.5/5

James Rollins - Subterranean

“i love the writing style, lots of interesting stuff to learn (history, science and geography).”, no major spoilers.

This is one of the best Sci-Fi reads I’ve read earlier this year. I believe this book was first published in 1999. Long story short, the story follows a team assigned to explore an underground cave in Antarctica consisting a team of archaeologists, biologist and geologist. They were on a mission to retrieve two lost teams who had entered the cave but never came out to find their way back home again.

The cave has a dark secret, an ancient secret that still lurking deep down, which becomes a mysterious phenomenon where at times they heard screaming of unnatural creatures. Deep curiosity made the team wants to explore more when the fact that they were ordered to get back to base immediately to abort the mission. Denying the order given, the team decides to go on with the mission which later on becomes their worse nightmare which lead to their own doom.

subterranean james rollins book review

The story was really good from the very beginning, the conversation was very fascinating, I love the writing style, lots of interesting stuff to learn (history, science and geography), fast pace, characters different point of views and I must say that the author crafted the story so damn well.

There’s also some romance in this book but at times it can be really cringy. And honestly, this book could have been really great if it is adapted into a film. Still, powerfully told, five stars, recommended.
