At UBC, many graduate programmes close applications in December and January, with offers being made February to April as a rough guideline. Depending on subject area, applications can close as late as April or May for a September start though.

What supporting documents do I need as an international student?

In general, required supporting documents won’t be too different from those for a domestic applicant, with the exception being proof of English language ability. Examples of supporting documents could be: 

• Transcripts of all post-secondary courses/degrees previously enrolled in
• Reference letters 
• Statement of interest/research statement
• English language test scores
• Depending on programme, test scores or portfolio

Many institutions allow applicants to apply with scans of their transcripts initially. However, once applicants receive an admission offer they will usually have to submit official copies, which may include translations for international applicants. 

International applicants are encouraged to familiarise themselves with other details, such as study permit procedures, work opportunities and health insurance. While not required for the application itself, these are important considerations for which to plan and budget if the application is successful.

Do I have to pay for my PhD application?

Most universities in Canada will charge an application fee. At UBC, the application fee for international applicants is CAD$168.25. UBC automatically waives these fees for applicants from countries identified among the world’s 50 least developed nations. Other universities in Canada may have similar measures in place, so be sure to check this.

Other than application fees, students should make a financial plan that incorporates tuition and living costs, as well as checking what financial aid you could be eligible for and which scholarships are available for international students.

The Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program (ISGP) at the University of British Columbia was established in 1971, the first of its kind in Canada. It is one of the only Canadian programs to offer doctoral degrees in interdisciplinary studies, and is possibly one of the largest of its kind in North America.

The main purpose of the ISGP is to enable qualified graduate students to pursue advanced interdisciplinary research exceeding the provisions of existing departmental programs. There are no restrictions regarding the topic and in many cases the student draws upon expertise from several distinct faculties. The prospective student has to bring together three or four qualified faculty from different departments or units. Because there are no constraints on which fields are brought together, there are virtually no two students in the same sub-field. The ISGP is designed only for a highly motivated and superb student who can steer an independent course.

1) Check Eligibility

Minimum academic requirements.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). The graduate program that you are applying to may have additional requirements. Please review the specific requirements for applicants with credentials from institutions in:

• Canada or the United States
• International countries other than the United States

Each program may set higher academic minimum requirements. Please review the program website carefully to understand the program requirements. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission as it is a competitive process.

English Language Test

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application. Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

Minimum requirements for the two most common English language proficiency tests to apply to this program are listed below:

Overall score requirement : 90

IELTS: International English Language Testing System

Overall score requirement : 6.5

Other Test Scores

Some programs require additional test scores such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Test (GMAT). The requirements for this program are:

All applicants have to submit transcripts from all past post-secondary study. Document submission requirements depend on whether your institution of study is within Canada or outside of Canada.

Letters of Reference

A minimum of three references are required for application to graduate programs at UBC. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications.

Statement of Interest

Many programs require a statement of interest , sometimes called a "statement of intent", "description of research interests" or something similar.

Supervision

Students in research-based programs usually require a faculty member to function as their thesis supervisor. Please follow the instructions provided by each program whether applicants should contact faculty members.

Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.

Program Funding Packages

All full-time students in UBC-Vancouver PhD programs will be provided with a funding package of at least $24,000 for each of the first four years of their PhD from September 2024. The funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Please note that many graduate programs provide funding packages that are substantially greater than $24,000 per year. Please check with your prospective graduate program for specific details of the funding provided to its PhD students.

Average Funding

• 6 students received Teaching Assistantships. Average TA funding based on 6 students was $9,532.
• 13 students received Research Assistantships. Average RA funding based on 13 students was $20,892.
• 8 students received Academic Assistantships. Average AA funding based on 8 students was $7,509.
• 44 students received internal awards. Average internal award funding based on 44 students was $12,361.
• 14 students received external awards. Average external award funding based on 14 students was $24,258.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

Canadian science gets biggest boost to PhD and postdoc pay in 20 years

Researchers in Canada got most of what they were hoping for in the country’s 2024 federal budget, with a big boost in postgraduate pay and more funding for research and scientific infrastructure.

“We are investing over $5 billion in Canadian brainpower,” said finance minister Chrystia Freeland in her budget speech on 16 April. “More funding for research and scholarships will help Canada attract the next generation of game-changing thinkers.”

Canadian PhD students and postgrads plan mass walkout over low pay

Postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers have been advocating for higher pay for the past two years through a campaign called Support Our Science. They requested an increase in the value, and number, of federal government scholarships, and got more than they asked for. Stipends for master’s students will rise from Can$17,500 (US$12,700) to $27,000 per year, PhDs stipends that ranged from $20,000 to $35,000 will be set to a uniform annual $40,000 and most postdoctoral-fellowship salaries will increase from $45,000 to $70,000 per annum. The number of scholarships and fellowships provided will also rise over time, building to around 1,720 more per year after five years.

“We’re very thrilled with this significant new investment, the largest investment in graduate students and postdocs in over 21 years,” says Kaitlin Kharas, a PhD student at the University of Toronto, Canada, and executive director of Support Our Science . “It will directly support the next generation of researchers.”

Although only a small proportion of students and postdoctoral fellows receive these federal scholarships, other funders tend to use them as a guide for their own stipends.

Many postgraduates said that low pay was forcing them to consider leaving Canada to pursue their scientific career, says Kharas, so this funding should help to retain talent in the country.

“This is going to move us from a searing brain drain to a brain gain, and position us to compete on the world stage,” says Chad Gaffield, chief executive of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities, based in Ontario, which supported the campaign.

‘Determined to thrive’

The budget also includes marked boosts for basic research. There is an extra $1.8 billion over five years in core funding for the three federal grant-awarding research councils, as well as $400 million for upgrades to the TRIUMF particle accelerator in Vancouver, and more cash for several other large facilities and institutes across the country. There will also be more than $2 billion for the artificial-intelligence sector in Canada.

“[This budget] really emphasizes that Canada is determined to thrive in the twenty-first century based on science and research,” says Gaffield.

Canada announces new innovation agency — and it’s not modelled on DARPA

Others have pointed out that the vast majority of the money in the budget for the research councils is backloaded, with just $228 million coming in the next two years. This means that the gains will be slow, and could be vulnerable to changes in the political climate, says Alex Usher, president of Higher Education Strategy Associates, a consultancy in Toronto. “Do not count on this money being there after an election,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). Canada’s next federal election is due in October 2025, and the opposition Conservative Party is campaigning on reigning in spending.

The budget also makes some changes to how science funding is organized. Instead of ten different programmes for scholarships and fellowships, with differing levels of support, there will now be a single programme with just three levels — master’s degrees, PhDs and postdoctoral fellowships. Kharas says that this should simplify the system.

The government will also create a new “capstone” research-funding organization to better coordinate the work of the three granting councils and “help to advance internationally collaborative, multi-disciplinary and mission-driven research”, the budget says. It will also create an advisory Council on Science and Innovation, comprised of leaders from academia, industry and the non-profit sector, which will develop a national science-and-innovation strategy to guide priority setting and increase the impact of federal investments. “This should help move us towards a more efficient, well-coordinated and nimble way of supporting research in Canada,” says Gaffield. “I look forward to working with the government to optimize it.”

Jobs in tech: 6 countries offering visas to skilled foreign graduates

Is working abroad the solution to your career advancement? If so, you might want to consider applying for jobs in tech overseas — and getting there is not as impossible as it may seem.   

There’s a reason why tech jobs are often pegged as careers of the future: digitisation is taking over no matter which industry you’re in.

Whether in healthcare, finance, or even the arts, the use of new technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data is becoming more ubiquitous. The current global workforce, however, can hardly keep up with the pace of its development. 

A sweeping country-by-country report from American consulting firm Korn Ferry found that more than 85 million jobs would go unfilled globally due to talent shortages in filling the labour market. Jobs in tech, media, and communications will have a deficit of over four million workers by 2030, resulting in a nearly US$5 billion revenue loss. 

As multiple countries outline strategies to overcome talent gaps in the workforce, some of these plans include introducing new visa routes for skilled international graduates. 

If you’ve got the expertise, qualifications and work experience, here are four countries eager to welcome and fast-track your arrival on their shores: 

How to land jobs in tech overseas as a foreign graduate 

Canada .

The Great White North sits high on our list as a hiring hotspot for jobs in tech. The Global Talent Stream visa was introduced as part of the Temporary Foreign Worker Programme to address short-term domestic labour scarcity in tech and is divided into Categories A and B. Successful hires can earn over 80,000 Canadian dollars annually in the former category, while Category B is a route reserved for employment within the Global Talent Occupations List . 

The bulk of the application process is undertaken by your potential employer, who must obtain approval from the government to proceed with an overseas hire after demonstrating an actual need for foreign workers to fill in the vacancies.

Once it’s approved, you can use the confirmation letter copy to apply for a work permit work through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and get your permit within two weeks. 

One of Europe’s most prominent centres in innovation, Germany is now offering a work visa for IT experts who have at least three years of experience in the field over the last seven years. Here’s what you need to qualify for the visa: 

• You have an IT job offer in Germany.
• You can prove that you possess at least three years of experience in the sector over the last seven years, and it adequately qualifies you for your intended position. 
• You can prove your relevant theoretical knowledge required for the job in question through training courses and exams.
• Your potential job in Germany comes with a gross annual salary of at least 50,760 euros (as of 2022).
• You must have obtained at least a level of B1 in the German language according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In individual cases, you won’t need to prove your proficiency skills if the language spoken at work is not German.

Portugal 

Portugal is fast becoming a popular destination for startup companies to set up shop in Europe. As such, the government has made it easier to recruit foreign talents through the Tech Visa programme, which is open to non-European Union citizens aged 18 years and above who are qualified in their respective fields. 

Applicants must also satisfy the following requirements:

• Not be a permanent resident of the Schengen area.
• Not having a criminal record.
• Have no pending tax obligations.
• Have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. 
• Possess at least five years of experience in specialised technical functions.
• Proficient in English, Portuguese, Spanish or French.

The Global Talent Visa scheme allows you to work in the UK if you are deemed a leader or potential leader in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. The application process begins with getting an endorsement on GOV.UK as a tech expert with “exceptional promise” or “exceptional talent,” which will be assessed by Tech Nation, the official endorsing body for experts in digital technology designated by the Home Office. 

Once that’s cleared, you can proceed with applying for the visa , and you don’t need a job offer for it to be granted. You can work for up to five years with the visa and renew it as many times as you like, with the possibility of settling permanently in the UK afterwards.

New Zealand

A recent industry study showed that tech employers in New Zealand have a high demand for software developers, followed by data analysts and cybersecurity experts. Expertise in cloud-native environments such as Azure and AWS is sought-after too.

The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), which replaced the Skilled Migrant Category visa, allows skilled workers to work for a specific New Zealand employer accredited by Immigration New Zealand .

To apply, you need to have a job offer and meet certain skill, experience, and health requirements.

Eighty of the world’s top 100 technology firms have a presence in Singapore, making it a prime location to find yourself a job in tech.

The Tech.Pass visa allows established tech entrepreneurs, leaders, or technical experts from around the world to come to Singapore to perform frontier and disruptive innovations.

To be eligible for the pass, applicants must satisfy any two of the following conditions:

• Have a last drawn fixed monthly salary (in the last year) of at least $22,500 Singaporean dollars (approximately US$16,600 at the time of writing) or its equivalent in a foreign currency. The fixed monthly salary should come from one employer. Candidates or business owners with other sources of income may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
• Have at least five cumulative years of experience in a leading role (such as making major contributions to the design, development, and/or deployment of a tech product) in a tech company with a valuation/market cap of at least US$500 million or at least US$30 million funding raised.
• Have at least five cumulative years of experience in a leading role in the development of a tech product that has at least 100,000 monthly active users or at least US$100 million annual revenue.
