Campus and facilities

Inspiring campuses.

QUT has two vibrant inner-city campuses in the heart of Brisbane: Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove. The campuses are connected by a free, accessible shuttle bus that runs every 15 minutes. Students are close to all the action, with cultural and commercial hubs within walking distance of each. Both campuses offer performance and arts venues, fitness and medical facilities, shops and food outlets. The Gardens Point campus borders the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, which is where the name comes from.

Amazing facilities

Students can access high-tech study and collaborative learning spaces including workshops and simulation centres. The university's Education Precinct offers learning spaces, study pods and community areas interwoven with nature and technology. This space houses the Sphere—a digital LED globe that features a changing menu of visual content. There is also The Cube, an advanced interactive digital space, in the Science and Engineering Centre.

The university's Economics and Finance Bloomberg Lab gives students the opportunity to conduct financial analysis with actual real-time data. QUT health students can work with real patients under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals at on-campus health clinics and simulation spaces. Law and justice students can test their skills in mock trials in the QUT Moot court. This provides a realistic setting for student to hone their advocacy skills, while learning courtroom etiquette and procedure.

Student life

Students at QUT get a world-class education in Brisbane, Australia's third largest city and a modern, welcoming, and multicultural place. Brisbane offers thriving urban precincts, natural attractions and beautiful weather and facilities for an outdoor lifestyle. With a subtropical climate and dynamic, culturally diverse atmosphere, Brisbane offers one of the finest combinations of quality education and vibrant living anywhere in the world.

QUT gives students ample opportunity to immerse themselves in social activities on campus . Students can choose from 120 clubs with a focus on sport, culture, music, politics, religion or special interests-ranging from Amnesty International to anime-or start their own club to connect with others who have the same interests. These clubs organise social events such as balls, formal dinners, trips away, lunch time barbeques and more. Enrolling in a club is often a good way to get together with like-minded peers from all around the world an opportunity to build lasting friendships.

QUT offers students opportunities to represent, engage and connect through a range of sports – whether team or individual, social or competitive - including netball, tennis, football, e-sports, motorsport and swimming. Activities on offer for international students also include cultural celebrations and weekend trips.

Students have the chance to take part in many volunteer opportunities, including QUT Connectors where they can contribute to building a vibrant campus community and help new students settle into university life. Another way to help other students succeed with their studies is to volunteer time with the QUT Peer Mentor Program, making it a great way to give back.

What's new

In 2024 QUT has launched the all-new Bachelor of Communication with four new majors; digital advertising, community and public relations, journalism, and media and communication industries. The QUT Bachelor of Communication enables students to harness the power of media and communication platforms for meaningful global impact across a range of professions and industries. This new course has flexible course options so students can tailor their degree to suit their interests, as well as build on their unique skillset.

QUT is also offering students a new suite of vertical double degrees which include the Master of Data Analytics. Double vertical degrees allow students to study a bachelor's and master's degree in one application, and in a shorter time than it would take to study them separately. This gives students two qualifications while saving time and money.

The new double vertical degrees are designed to combine Master of Data Analytics with a range of disciplines, such as biomedical science, business, engineering and information technology. This allows students to graduate with a competitive advantage and have a broader understanding across more than one field. They were created to specifically meet industry needs and bring together expertise in statistics, computer science, and business process management disciplines to deliver graduates who can lead data-driven decision making across a wide range of industries.

How to apply

Applying to QUT is easy. Students need to submit an application for study through the QUT Application Portal. Applicants will then be directed to create an account to commence the application process.

Applicants will need to include all supporting documents including:

  • Secondary school completion certificate, academic transcripts and records
  • English language proficiency test results
  • Passport identity page

Entry requirements

QUT accepts English language proficiency results from several standardised tests taken in the past two years. Students must check individual program pages to view details. The university accepts results from the following English tests:

  • IELTS Academic
  • Pearson PTE (Academic)

If students do not meet the required English language test scores or adequate academic requirements for their preferred courses, the university may offer them a course package. This incorporates their degree with an English language or pathway program at QUT College to help them acquire the required level of proficiency in the language.

What students say about Queensland University of Technology

  • The curriculum is very assignment-based, which gives us the opportunity to research and find information for ourselves.
  • I havent partaken yet; however, I know it entails 100 hours of work within the field we choose to study and grants many credit points, which is ideal since our industry is very hands-on.
  • There are a multitude of job opportunities and placements, but these are something you must apply for of your own accord.
  • The fee structure was very fair compared to other universities in Australia, and, combined with a moderately priced cost of living in Brisbane, it is an ideal location for embarking on education.
  • Perfect because everybody seems so nice, and everyone is open to helping everyone else, which creates a good community for everyone who attends the college.
  • Networking and travel opportunities, which QUT was able to offer me in addition to my studies themselves, were significant factors.
  • I believe that it is outdated and needs to be rethought. I also believe that a wider variety of classes need to be offered for those who do not wish to undertake the standard subjects.
  • No, I never applied for any, so I am not informed enough to guide you on how to apply for this

Queensland University of Technology taking on the real world

Networking and travel opportunities in which QUT was able to offer me in addition to my studies itself. QUT offers many short and long term exchange programs as well as study tours which allows small groups of students to travel overseas and gain credible experiences

I was able to participate in my degree through HEX and this also included my SAS fees too. If it wasn't for this, I wouldn't have been able to attend university at all. QUT has also been accommodating to students through many scholarship programs on offer.

Honest review from an international student

Because this is the only university in Brisbane which focus on more practical application than theory in technology field there are a lot of opportunities in this university to work on IT projects with supervisors and learn how this field operates in real life which motivated me even more to join this university

Scholarships are available to students with high grades and fees are quite high for international students. You need to pay for every unit you study and paid at the beginning of every semester. I am doing 3 semesters for my first year so I need to pay money at the beginning of every semester. I am looking forward to a scholarship

Student Life at Queensland

I heard many good things from past students, my siblings also went to this university and had positive experiences. It was closer than Griffith and I also liked the campuses a lot better than any other university I looked at.

I deferred my fees to HEX, this process was made very easy and straightforward. There is another fee for each semester of study that you can also defer.

I had the course I wanted and was easily accessible. I enjoyed the general atmosphere of the campus and the facilities were good. There was also a broad range of clubs and societies that interested me.

The fees are government paid when you apply for HECS help loans which I believe is beneficial as it allowed people from all walks of life to gain a degree to improve their employability

QUT - Land of generosity

It had lots of freebies and it's just a great school from word of mouth it's also easy to access and who doesn't like free stuff. I'll go anywhere if they do lots of giveaways and market days and fun activities.

Reasonable and tells how the government helps out when you're applying they strongly suggest to fill out a financial aid document.

Alumnus Review of QUT Gardens Point

I elected to go to QUT due to its reputation. I had heard and researched that QUT had one of the best technology courses and curriculum in comparison to other universities teaching the same course. Its location is in the middle of the city also made it easy for me to reach it from work.

The fee structure was, you were charged a flat amount per unit per semester. There is extreme transparency with the cost, and students have the ability to drop out of the particular unit before the unit cost is incurred. I never had to pay for any resources in order to take the course, but textbooks were recommended (and the ones I did acquire were certainly helpful).

I heard QUT has the best learning faculties. I have a lot of friends who go there. QUT is in the top 10 universities in Australia. I have amazing support from tutors and lecturers. The campus is based close to home.

3,055 for the course alone. $2,436 for textiles and resources. Quite expensive for a short study period.

Life at QUT

QUT has a good ranking which will give me a recognized degree, and also with their learning resources outside the classroom, it will allow me to gain practical knowledge. Brisbane being a very hospital city made me consider it as well.

The fee structure was very fair in comparison to other universities in Australia, and also with a medium priced living cost in Brisbane it's an ideal location to start on education.

Because it's a good college and I have been referred to it by family friends who have recently completed their degrees and they all said it is definitely worth my time and effort to at least try and complete a degree.

Fees structure was alright but pretty expensive the most part was travelling to the college there and back began to seem expensive but it was alright.

QUT’s TRUST EXPERIENCE (TX) Thought Leadership Series

Why retailers are still lagging behind customers ‘techspectations’.

The latest report in the Trust Experience (TX) series, Trust Trend Report: Consumer Perceptions of Retail Technology in Australia 2024, finds value propositions can alleviate trust concerns and bridge the technology gap.

A comprehensive survey conducted with 518 Australians reveals intriguing insights into consumers’ perceptions and trust of retail technology in 2024. The research, aimed at understanding the trust dynamics and adoption barriers within the retail sector, provides critical data points for retail, business, and industry stakeholders.

“Understanding customers’ concerns and the current state of trust in retail technology is crucial. The Australian Trust Trend Report 2024 delivers precisely this insight.” Mark Scanlan | Global Industry Lead for Retail, Cisco Systems

Download the Trust Trend report

Trust and adoption of retail technology.

Researchers at QUT, led by Dr Nadine Ostern, Cisco Chair in Trusted Retail , have found that while Australians exhibit a general trust in retail technology, they remain hesitant to adopt new advancements swiftly. The findings suggest that trust issues revolving around technical and social aspects are significant barriers. However, these concerns can be mitigated through clear value propositions.

“The year 2024 has been named the ‘Year of AI’, marking a significant shift for individuals, organizations, and society as a whole. What was once considered futuristic is now becoming a reality. People are moving from merely being curious about sophisticated technologies, such as generative AI, to integrating them into their everyday lives,” commented Dr Ostern. “But when offered by organizations, especially retailers, this openness often comes to a halt. For retailers, digital transformation and technology adoption, which includes more than just AI, isn’t just about their own growth, it’s about effectively transitioning their customers to trusting the new tech. Retailers must understand both the intended and unintended consequences of tech usage to address customers’ trust concerns effectively.”

Understanding these insights is crucial for retailers and industry stakeholders aiming to thrive in the evolving retail landscape. The latest research findings offer a roadmap to navigating the complexities of technology integration in retail with the survey unveiling several pivotal insights:

  • Trusting but hesitant: Australians trust new technologies but are slow to adopt them. While 78.8% of people generally consider themselves trusting, only 39.6% are open to adopting new technologies. Trust concerns about technical and social aspects, such as privacy and data security, hinder widespread acceptance.
  • Value proposition is key: Clear and compelling value propositions can alleviate many of the trust issues. When consumers understand the tangible benefits of new technology, they are more inclined to adopt it.
  • Transparency matters: Addressing privacy concerns through transparency is essential. Consumers want to know how their data is used and what benefits they will receive in return. While these concerns are well understood, the survey found that loss of human interaction is among the three biggest trust concerns. Dr Ostern notes, “It’s interesting to see this tension where customers are both excited about AI and at the same time fear losing human connection. It will be important for retailers to strike the right balance when offering retail technology and automation to their customers.”
  • Interest in automation: There is a notable openness among Australians towards fully automated stores and self-driving vehicles. This indicates a growing interest in automating and streamlining shopping processes.
  • The future is shaped by AI: The appetite for convenience and efficiency among Australians suggests a promising future for AI-driven retail innovations.

The findings underscore not only the potential for advancing retail technology rapidly, but the criticality of addressing both technical and social concerns to foster greater consumer trust and adoption of retail technology. Dr Nadine Ostern adds, “We found retailers often struggle to communicate the benefits of retail technology to their customers. Take AI cameras above self-checkout stations, for example. While they help prevent theft, customers may feel unfairly mistrusted. However, these cameras could also be used to ensure customers don’t overpay, which would build trust. Unfortunately, current systems aren’t designed for this, and as a result, the focus on security and data breaches often overshadows the potential customer benefits. This missed opportunity leads customers to conclude retail technology is often only benefitting the retailer. This lack of customer-focused innovation can hurt retailers in the long run.”

“Retailers who succeed in building trust will be those who effectively communicate the tangible benefits of their technologies and simplify the customer experience,” said Dr Ostern. “By focusing on these areas, retailers can foster greater acceptance and enthusiasm for technological advancements… and transform customers’ scepticism surrounding retail technology into a real trust opportunity.”

Leading diversity

Diversity is a buzz word in many organizations today. While having a diverse team promise potential for innovation and creativity, it can also create many challenges. Leading diversity will be an important capability for future leaders.

Optimising bone shape with memory networks

Bone is a dynamic tissue that optimises its shape to the mechanical loads that it carries. Bone mass is accrued where loads are high, and reduced where loads are low. This adaptation of bone tissue to mechanical loads is well-known and observed in many instances. However, what serves as a reference mechanical state in this shape optimisation remains largely unknown.

Facilitating gaining trust in IOT systems

Many organisations have shown an increasing interest in deploying IOT systems. However, most of them and their stakeholders are new to these systems, and it is difficult for them to trust the technology. What are the technological, managerial and societal aspects that contribute to trust in IOT systems? What can we do to improve the level of trust and increase adoption of the technology?

Facilitating gaining trust in AI

Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are automating service delivery in many sectors. Businesses have shown interest in using these technologies for delivering complex services in a way that meet the unique needs of customers. The technology gained more popularity particularly during Covid-19 outbreak, as it helped organisations to become more efficient in service delivery and increased service availability for customers / service applicants. However, gaining managers’ and users’ trust in these systems has always been a significant challenge. Particularly, managers and …

Overcoming the challenges of sensitive data via synthetic data generation (case study)

In the 21st Century, there is an abundance of data, often containing insights that could benefit a number of stakeholders. However, despite this opportunity, it is often the case that the data is sensitive and can not be released by organisations or government agencies due to privacy concerns. One possible solution to the above dilemma is to instead carefully construct a 'twin' data set that contains similar information (and ideally, the same insights) as the original data set, but without …

Mathematical modelling of cell-to-cell communication via extracellular vesicles (EVs)

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane bound packages of information constantly being released by all living cells, including bacteria. There are many types and sizes of EVs. Each EV type contains its own distinctive cargo consisting of characteristic DNA, RNA, and proteins. We are just beginning to understand the many roles of EVs to maintain the health of the cell producing the EVs, and to communicate with other cell types that take up the EVs produced by neighbouring cells. Since EVs …

Multi-modal sentiment analysis

In deep learning models, language models and word embedding methods have become popular to understand the context of text data. Popular language models such as BERT have limitations in terms of the token length. There exist some corpora that have longer text with an average of 1000 tokens. Additionally, these corpora are text-heavy and only include some images. In our prior works, we have developed several multi-modality models on social media datasets.

Evaluation of language models and word embedding methods for natural language processing applications

In deep learning models, language models and word embedding methods have become popular to understand the context of text data. There exist many variants of these methods and have different limitations. This project will introduce you to the hot topic of language models and the fields of Natural Language Processing and Text Mining.

Curvature dependence of reaction-diffusion wave front speed with nonlinear diffusion.

Reaction-diffusion waves describe the progression in space of wildfires, species invasions, epidemic spread, and biological tissue growth. When diffusion is linear, these waves are known to advance at a rate that strongly depends on the curvature of the wave fronts. How nonlinear diffusion affects the curvature dependence of the progression rate of these wavefronts remains unknown.

Automatic Generation of Software Vulnerability Datasets for Machine Learning

In recent years, machine learning has enjoyed profound success in a range of interesting applications such as natural language processing, computer vision and speech recognition. It has been possible mainly due to, in addition to better computing resources, the availability of large amounts of training datasets to these applications. However, in software security research, the lack of large datasets is an open problem that makes it challenging for machine learning to reason about security vulnerabilities found in real-world software. The …

Information retrieval and coding methods for large scale bioinformatics

Advances in sequencing technologies over the past two decades have led to an explosion in the availability of genomic sequence data and an increasingly urgent need for scalable clustering and search facilities. One approach is to encode sequences as binary vectors in a high-dimensional space, simplifying the comparison and allowing it to be computed very rapidly using bit-level operations.Coupled with these ideas is the need to provide clustering methods and efficient indexing and lookup in response to search queries. One …

Building explainable and trustworthy intelligent systems

Existing machine learning-based intelligent systems are autonomous and opaque (often considered “black-box” systems), which has led to the lack of trust in AI adoption and, consequently, the gap between machine and human being. In 2018, the European Parliament adopted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which introduces a right of explanation for all human individuals to obtain “meaningful explanations of the logic involved” when a decision is made by automated systems. To this end, it is a compliance that an intelligent …
