Students are required to take 48 credits to complete the coursework phase of the PhD program. Full-time doctoral students normally take 9-12 credits of coursework in the fall and spring semesters over two to three years, as indicated on the following schedules. Students, in consultation with their faculty mentor and the PhD program office, should plan their course schedules accordingly. In addition, students must successfully complete a supervised research practicum before the end of the coursework phase of the program.
Students who plan to register for either more or less than 12 credits for any semester during the coursework phase of the program should notify the Assistant Director of the PhD Program about the exact number of credits for which they will be registering in order to avoid problems with their account.
The qualifying exam will entail a choice between a systematic review or a comprehensive literature review of a given topic of interest. All students must pass a qualifying exam, which serves as an examination of what students have learned to date in the program and a determination of whether they are ready to engage in independent research. Successful completion of the qualifying exam also demonstrates that a student is able to adhere to accepted norms of scholarship and produce written work of publishable quality.
In creating a dissertation proposal, students will choose a topic or research question to study, and will form a dissertation committee based on their research area interest and faculty area of expertise. Students will submit their written proposal to the dissertation committee and arrange for an oral defense.
The student, in consultation with their dissertation committee, will determine the appropriate structure and form of the dissertation. All dissertations will be evaluated on the quality and clarity of the conception, writing, presentation, evidence of scholarship and systematic inquiry, originality, and significance to the field of social work. Students will submit a written dissertation and also have an oral defense of their dissertation, which is open to the public.
Note: The doctoral program does not prepare students for advanced practice in clinical social work or for licensure for social work practice in New York State. Students licensed as an LMSW or LCSW by the New York State Education Department may practice according to the guidelines of their particular license. Unlicensed students may not provide professional services in New York State unless otherwise authorized by state law.

The goals of the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s PhD in Social Work and Social Welfare are to:
The PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare is focused on developing scholars who are transdisciplinary experts (i.e., masters of a broad array of applicable methods not in a specific to a social science but drawing from an array of disciplines) with the education and training to understand, develop, and evaluate social interventions, including service systems and policies. The PhD Program in Social Work and Social Welfare applies appropriate transdisciplinary perspectives to focus specifically on problems at the heart of social work: to promote human adaptation, social change, and social justice. The distinctive elements of the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare are its transdisciplinary perspective and its greater emphasis on the science of multi-level individual and social change and social justice in a diverse and pluralistic societal context.
The PhD program in Social work and Social Welfare trains students to be able to create and evaluate interventions designed to solve societal problems. As social work is an applied profession, the PhD program in Social Work and Social Welfare prepares students to discover new methods for helping people and society overcome the problems they face. Coursework aligns with this focus and the preliminary examination required for candidacy asks students to synthesize research on practice interventions in their area of research, critique it, identify gaps, and make suggestions on addressing these gaps.
Beginning in Fall 2024, the program will admit five (5) Social Work and Social Welfare PhD students to start in the Fall of 2025.
Please note that applicants can apply to both the doctoral program in Social Work and Social Welfare and the SSW Joint Doctoral program in Social Work and Social Science but must complete specific applications for each program. Students are encouraged to thoroughly review materials about both PhD program options to ensure alignment between the program(s) and their research interests and scholarly goals.

Foundation-level coursework emphasizes generalist social work practice at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. You'll learn how to advance human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice using a range of engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation methods in practice with individuals, groups, and communities. You’ll also learn how to engage in policy- and research-informed practice while developing an understanding of the importance of diversity and difference in shaping a person’s life experiences.
Concentration-level coursework, either Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) or Advanced Integrated Practice (AIP), focuses on a deeper understanding of specific knowledge, values, skills, and cognitive and affective processes consistent with each concentration area.
Syracuse’s program allows you to choose from advanced concentrations in Advanced Clinical Practice, for those who wish to become mental health clinicians, or Integrated Social Work Practice, for those who wish to pursue direct practice and leadership in a wide range of increasingly complex human service organizations.

She advocates this value through research, education, and design practice. Yoko is principal of Penguin Environmental Design in Hamden, Connecticut. Her firm focuses on incorporating landscape into architecture. In 2016, Dr. Kawai co-founded Mirai Work Space Alliance in New York. There, she and her colleagues bring “Space for Well-Being” to contemporary workplaces.

Taking his work with fellow veterans personally.
A disappointing experience with a civilian VA social worker when he was just out of the U.S. Marine Corps motivated Mohamed Hassan to pursue his MSW and serve fellow veterans himself. Now he’s a social worker at one of the country’s largest VA medical centers where he helps homeless and housing insecure veterans find and keep permanent housing.
Finding her path in social work and fulfilling her professional dream.
Cristina Favaro always had a passion for working with children, especially during their early years, but her path to doing so was anything but linear. Fortunately, she found her calling in social work. Now, as an NYU Silver MSW graduate, she is in the inaugural cohort of The Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services’ Social Work Residency, where she works with babies, toddlers, and young children with behavioral, developmental, and emotional difficulties.
While earning his degree at Silver, Michael Sanders (front row center), MSW ’19—father, army veteran, and entrepreneur—was the vice president of the NYU Military Alliance, an NYU Social Sector Leadership Diversity Fellow, a Silver Student Leadership Council Fellow, a member of the Students of Color Collective, and one of two students on the School’s Social Justice Praxis Committee. Michael, who is now a Social Service Advocate at the Committee for Public Counsel Services in Boston, observed, “Being a social worker means fighting for social justice and never forgetting our responsibility to our clients, to ourselves, and to society as a whole.”
The Silver School Faculty is Examining Society’s Pressing Problems.
Researchers at NYU Silver were among the first to identify an alarming rise in suicide deaths, attempts and thoughts among Black and Brown young people. Now they are partnering with colleagues across NYU and beyond to unravel the mystery of why suicide is rising among youth of color and to develop effective, culturally specific interventions.
Being trauma-informed helps child welfare service providers to better address the consequences of child maltreatment, and with a 5-year, $2.6 million federal grant, NYU Silver Assistant Professor Kathrine Sullivan is spearheading a partnership with the New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services and NYU Grossman School of Medicine that will expand this expertise in NYC. In addition to funding the training of existing child welfare providers, the grant will also enable the establishment of the CHAMP Institute at NYU Silver to provide specialized training to 10 MSW students each year in trauma-informed care in order to prevent child maltreatment.
With a grant from our Constance and Martin Silver Center on Data Science and Social Equity, Drs. Nicholas Lanzieri and Anne Dempsey are partnering with colleagues from NYU Tandon School of Engineering and NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development to develop and test an AI-powered, virtual reality simulation template that is designed specifically to enable students to gain and apply social work skills.
