August 20, 2020

Elvis Onsomu

Scholarships in Kenya have gone a long way in transforming the country in many ways especially through offering quality education to young people from poor backgrounds who then return and improve the lives of people in the society.

Indeed, many leaders and achievers are products of scholarships at some point in their academic past which is why most of these in turn launch scholarships or fund them to benefit others. Yet scholarships can be very elusive and only the best at research or those lucky enough to be around caring and able people can access these scholarships.

The internet is indispensable to anyone seeking funding for education and since you’ve stumbled upon this article, I’m gonna make the work much easier for you by listing some of the top scholarships in Kenya that are accessible to Kenyan undergraduate and postgraduate scholars.

The Foundation supports doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment. Trudeau Scholars are actively engaged in their fields, in which they are expected to become leading national and international figures.

Trudeau Scholars are selected through a process that involves nomination by a university, an application supported by references and transcripts, internal and external review and selection panels, an interview, and the formal approval of the Board of Directors.

Interested students can refer to our  Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship database description  for eligibility criteria and Waterloo’s internal application process.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS)

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program was created to attract and retain world-class  doctoral  students and to establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at  $50,000 per year for up to three years .

The scholarships are administered by Canada's three federal granting agencies: the  Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) , the  Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)  and the  Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) .

Students wishing to apply for a Vanier CGS must do so through the Canadian university to which they are applying for doctoral studies. In an effort to support students in broadening their research horizons and seeking new challenges, the Vanier CGS program strongly encourages candidates to pursue their studies beyond the university that granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Based on university-assigned allocations, universities forward a limited number of nominations to the appropriate federal research granting agency (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) annually.

If a student is successful in the Vanier CGS competition, they  must  hold their award at the university that nominated them. The Vanier CGS cannot be taken to another university as it is not transferrable. To determine eligibility as well as how nominees are evaluated, please review the official eligibility criteria and evaluation criteria on the  Vanier website .

Please visit our  Vanier web page  for further details.

Federal Financial Aid

Federal financial aid is available to U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents in the form of federal loans. Domestic graduate students who wish to apply for federal loans must fill out the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) .

  • Unsubsidized Direct Stafford Loan:  Non-need-based, low-interest, fixed-rate loan available to undergraduate, graduate, or professional degree candidates registered for at least six credits in an academic program that leads to a degree. Repayment is deferred until six months after graduation, if you drop below half-time status, or take classes as a non-matriculated student. You may receive both subsidized and unsubsidized loans for the same enrollment period, but the total amount of these loans may not exceed the annual loan limit.
  • Federal Graduate and Professional Student PLUS Loan:  With terms nearly identical to the Parent PLUS loan, the “Grad PLUS” is also a credit-based, federally guaranteed loan awarded to students themselves who are registered for at least six credits in graduate or professional degree programs. Similar to the Parent PLUS loan, a Graduate/Professional student must complete Graduate PLUS application, accessible on  studentaid.gov . A PLUS Loan applicant who has an adverse credit history may still be able to receive a loan by documenting existing extenuating circumstances or by obtaining an endorser who does not have an adverse credit history. An endorser is someone who agrees to repay the loan if the borrower fails to do so. Also, if a Graduate Student/Professional PLUS applicant is denied the PLUS loan, s/he must complete Credit Counseling on studentaid.gov. It will not reduce your eligibility for the Stafford Loan, but the amount of any Stafford loans you will affect the amount of your PLUS loan. The PLUS loan is limited to the cost of attendance minus other aid received, as certified by New York Tech.

The Federal College Work Study Program provides part-time employment to assist eligible enrolled students in paying for educational expenses. It is based on economic need. If you are not eligible for Federal College Work Study, you can also become a student aid. For more information, please contact  Student Employment.

A farewell reception was held by the Chinese Embassy in Kenya on Thursday for a group of Kenyan students who have received Chinese government scholarships.

Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for providing the opportunity for Kenyan students to pursue higher education in leading universities in China.

Inyangala emphasized the importance of education for the development of any nation.

“I extend sincere gratitude to The People’s Republic of China, for the continued support towards the Government of Kenya in investing in education, research, innovation, and development which are key to the economy of the Country for over 60 years of bilateral relationships,” said the PS

This latest batch of 19 students will join the 46 others who received scholarships this year for undergraduate, Masters, and PhD levels. Inyangala highlighted that this support from Beijing demonstrates the strong alliance and partnership between the two nations.

In terms of academic support, China is helping Kenya build a strong pool of skilled workers that will contribute to the country’s progress.

“University education at various levels is critical in producing a pool of highly skilled manpower that is required for the economy to prosper in various specialized areas necessary for promoting improved productivity for National Socio-Economic Development and carrying out research to provide solutions to societal challenges,” she said

Deputy Head of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, Zhang Zhizhong, revealed that over 2,000 Kenyan students have studied in China through Chinese government or Public University scholarship programs since the establishment of a broader platform for cooperation between China and Africa in political, economic, and cultural exchanges.

“We hope that scholarship awardees are not only witnesses and beneficiaries but will also be contributors and promoters for the progress of China-Kenya and China-Africa friendship,” said Zhang noting that China and Kenya share a common future.

“We are happy to see that the previous scholarship students have returned to Kenya and are shining in their respective fields, playing important roles for the economic and social development of Kenya,” added the Deputy Ambassador

The farewell reception for the scholarship recipients, who will be departing for China in the next few days, coincided with an award ceremony for the winners of the “China-Africa Cooperation in My Eyes” Essay Competition.

The competition was organized by the Kenya-China Alumni Association. Henry Rotich, the Association’s Chairperson, stated that scholarships awarded by the Chinese government and enterprises have had a transformative impact on Kenya. He emphasized that the local youth have acquired essential technical and soft skills from the East Asian nation.

“The scholarships awarded by the Chinese government have paved the way for many of us who might have otherwise been denied the chance to pursue higher education,” said Rotich.
