World Pharmacists Day: Statement from WPC  “Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs”

The theme of this year’s World Pharmacists Day, 25th September, is “Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs”. The WPC encourages its member organisations to support World Pharmacists Day 2024, and in doing so, to demonstrate how we as community pharmacists are meeting global health needs, and can meet even more of those needs into the future.

WPC President Douglas Hoey said: “On World Pharmacists Day, as on every other day, the World Pharmacy Council and its national member organisations celebrate and salute the outstanding efforts and achievements of all pharmacists around the world. Properly resourced and with their skills and scope of practice fully recognized, community pharmacists stand ready to meet even more of each country’s health needs than they do now. The WPC and its members will continue to promote change that will unlock that full potential, leading the way to more accessible, efficient and resilient healthcare systems for the benefit of patients and communities worldwide.”

The significant advancements in the recognition and practice of community pharmacy in recent years have created a vast evidence base showing how pharmacies and pharmacists can contribute more to health systems. Some examples of these advancements in WPC member countries have included:

The introduction of pharmacy-led primary care clinics in Nova Scotia, Canada, which has already led to a significant reduction in emergency room visits for non-urgent or less-urgent cases. The 185,000 services provided (up to April 2024) have included assessment and prescribing, injection and immunization, chronic disease care, mental health and addiction services. Data also shows that more that the province of Ontario has recorded more than more than one million minor ailment assessments since pharmacists' scope of practice was expanded in January 2023.   In Australia, the success of programs such as the Urinary Tract Infection Pharmacy Pilot in Queensland has led the way for rapid enablement of pharmacist scope of practice, with the government of the most populous state (New South Wales) recently enabling pharmacists to provide treatment for a broader range of common and mild conditions, including ear infections, nausea and vomiting, reflux, acne, muscle pain and wound management.   In Ireland, pharmacists were granted the authority in September 2024 to extend prescription durations from 6 to 12 months, where clinically appropriate. Additionally, in August 2024, the Minister for Health announced that - beginning next year - pharmacists will be able to prescribe medications for eight conditions, including shingles, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and UTIs.   In many countries local community pharmacies have become the destination of choice for influenza and COVID-19 immunization, and are also now also contributing to greater accessibility and immunization rates for other vaccines such as those protecting against RSV, pneumococcal and meningococcal infections as well as childhood vaccination programmes. As part of Portugal’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the “Operação Luz Verde” (Green Light Operation) was launched to allow access to hospital medicines through community pharmacies. After the State of Emergency, this new regulatory framework was extended and studies have shown that the changes promote better access and satisfaction, ensure the persistence of treatments, promote savings for citizens, and reduce the burden on healthcare services.

Notwithstanding advancements such as these, it cannot be overlooked that community pharmacies in several WPC member countries are buckling under strain from external forces and limitations. Funding for core activities, including the essential professional service of dispensing medicines safely and appropriately, is insufficient and not keeping up with inflation. This has resulted in reduced patient access to community pharmacies in these countries, and reductions to the services they provide as pharmacies close or limit their operations. On top of the financial pressure, community pharmacists are spending more and more time managing the continuity of treatments for patients due to the ever-increasing frequency of medicine shortages.

As we navigate the complexities and demands of healthcare, the potential of community pharmacies remains largely untapped. On World Pharmacists Day 2024, the WPC calls on healthcare leaders around the world to secure the viability of community pharmacies and unlock their full potential for the benefit of patients and health systems globally.

The WPC acknowledges and thanks the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) as the organizers of World Pharmacists Day 2024.

History of World Pharmacist Day

World Pharmacists Day was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 2009 to promote and advocate for the crucial role of pharmacists in improving global health. The day honours the establishment of the FIP in 1912 and is celebrated to show respect for the pharmacy profession.

FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) is an international non-government organization that represents pharmacy, pharmaceutical education, and pharmaceutical sciences globally. It has 144 national organizations and millions of members worldwide, and its head office is in the Netherlands.

They enhance the pharmacy profession through practice, partnerships, and emerging scientific innovations while also focusing on developing the pharmacy workforce to meet global healthcare needs and expectations.

Pharmacists, with their experience, knowledge, and expertise, ensure that people get the most from their medicines, making the (medical) world a better place for everybody and, ensure access to medications, offer guidance on proper usage, and inspire us with their dedication to public health.

In 2020, the FIP began celebrating World Pharmacy Week, expanding the festivities to encompass all facets of the pharmacy profession. Turkish members of the FIP recommended the date, as the organization was established on that same day in 1912.

The Essential Role of Pharmacists in Healthcare and Public Health

Pharmacists play a vital role in healthcare systems by ensuring access to essential medicines and promoting their optimal use.

They also contribute significantly to patient care and public health through various activities such as providing health advice, conducting health screenings, educating patients, participating in public health campaigns, and engaging in research and development of new medicines.

Pharmacists also lead in pharmacovigilance, promote the responsible use of antibiotics, and advocate for policy changes to improve health outcomes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the important role of pharmacists in addressing global health crises.

The Themes of The World Pharmacists Day 2010-2020

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals who have enough knowledge about the effective uses of medications. World Pharmacist Day is celebrated on 25th September every year since 2010 on the day FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) started their journey. FIP encourages pharmacists to celebrate this day to promote and support the role of the pharmacist in the whole world. Every year they set a theme that focuses on the responsibilities of a pharmacist.

pharmacist day essay in english

The theme of World Pharmacists Day 2020 is “Transforming global health.” This statement emphasizes how pharmacists change global health through different types of services. They advise patients about administering drugs correctly, research to discover new drugs, vaccinate to prevent disease, etc. Now in the COVID-19 pandemic situation, pharmacists are playing huge roles in the community.

Last year, the theme of the World Pharmacists Day was “Safe and effective medicines for all.” Pharmacists ensure the safety and effective use of medication. The theme focuses on the role of the pharmacist in maintaining patient safety by improving medicine use and reduce medication error.

In 2018, the theme was, “Pharmacists are your medicines experts.” Pharmacists have enough knowledge about medicine, their composition, side effects, dose, interaction, etc. The theme emphasizes that pharmacists are a trusted source of knowledge and advice of medicine. They advise the patients to take the right medicine at the right time at the right dose.

In 2017, the theme of the day was, “From research to health care: Your pharmacist is at your service.” They are responsible for the drug development process and the drug delivery system in medication to manage the disease. The theme focuses on the responsibilities of a pharmacist in the research of drug and drug delivery systems in healthcare services.

In 2016, the theme of the World Pharmacists Day was, “Pharmacists: Caring for you.” Pharmacists are the caregiver to patients. They are liable for patient care. They collect prescriptions, medical history of the patient, lifestyle, then analyze them appropriately to serve the medication to patients. From receiving a prescription to dispensing; Pharmacists are required for patient care.

In 2015, “Pharmacist(s): your partner(s) in health” was the theme of world pharmacist day. As a health partner, pharmacists advise patients when and how to take medicine to get the maximum effect, how to reduce side effects, and how to prevent the interaction of a drug with other drugs, food, vegetables, etc. That means pharmacist gives all type of instructions which is needed for patients.

In 2014, “Access to pharmacists is access to health” was the theme of the pharmacist day. Pharmacists play key leadership roles in all aspects of the healthcare system. Without pharmacists, the healthcare system cannot develop properly. Hospital pharmacists and community pharmacists play a crucial role in healthcare.

In 2013, the theme of the world pharmacist day was, “Pharmacists – simplifying your medicines use, no matter how complex.” The major responsibility is to describe medicine to patients, give specific instructions, and ask doctors about patients wherever necessary. If a pharmacist finds any medicines in the prescription that can badly interact with another on the same list, he may consult the prescriber to change this. In this way, a pharmacist can simplify the use of medicine.

In 2012, “Pharmacists – your partners in using medicines responsibility” was the theme of world pharmacists day. Pharmacists are responsible for using the medicine. They do not dispense prescription drugs without a prescription. They create awareness to patients about adverse drug reactions, side effects, and contraindication of drugs.

In 2011, the theme was bigger than the other. On that year, the theme was, “I am your most accessible healthcare provider, I am a driving force behind discovering new medicines, I am the key that unlocks all you need to know about your medicines, I am with you in sickness and in health.” Basically, in that theme, the whole concept of the definition of a pharmacist was described. From researching and discovering a new drug to dispense the drug to patient hands, pharmacists are responsible. They have enough knowledge of medicine and their rational usage.

2010 is the first year from where pharmacist day was celebrated. In the first year of celebrating, the theme was, “Safety first with medicines, ask your pharmacist.” Ensuring the safety of a drug is the main role of a pharmacist. The patients must follow the instructions delivered by the pharmacist to maintain the safe use of a drug.

Pharmacists are required in every sector of our health system. From discovering medicine to dispense it, pharmacist stays with us like a shadow in every sector.

World Pharmacists Day: History, significance and interesting facts

Pharmacists are the skilled professionals who provide us with the right medicine and advise us on how to properly take them. When we fall ill, we don’t get super anxious because we know that the help of these professionals is always available.

The expertise of these healthcare professionals has helped people even more during the coronavirus pandemic. World Pharmacists Day is celebrated on 25 September every year to honour  pharmacists all around the globe for their crucial role in improving everyone’s health. Various educational activities are held on this day such as lectures and exhibitions.

The Role of Pharmacists in Healthcare Systems

The Role of Pharmacists in Healthcare Systems

Pharmacists play a crucial role in healthcare systems worldwide where they work alongside other healthcare professionals and help ensure optimal patient care, medication safety, and improved health outcomes. In today's complex healthcare landscape, the role of pharmacists has evolved significantly beyond simply dispensing medications.

This blog will provide information regarding the vital functions and responsibilities of pharmacists within healthcare systems to better equip you to make important decisions about pursuing a career as a twenty-first century pharmacist.

An Overview of Pharmacy Practice

The American Pharmacy Association defines the practice of pharmacy this way: “Pharmacists are trained to optimize medication use and improve population health outcomes. When pharmacists are a member of the health care team, they can help improve medication use and adherence, expand access to care, and reduce health care costs. Pharmacy practice is increasingly shifting from dispensing medications and counseling patients, to providing patient-centered, team-based care across a variety of health care settings.”

As part of an interdisciplinary team, pharmacists support patients, families, and clinicians in understanding and managing pharmaceutical treatment plans. Pharmacy practice may include:

  • Assessment of patient health
  • Formulation of a medication treatment plan
  • Education related to pharmaceutical administration and management
  • Collaboration on medication-related problems

As a practicing pharmacist, effective care of patients is seen through activities such as:

  • Compounding and dispensing medications
  • Counseling patients regarding their drug therapy and any related therapy devices
  • Re-evaluation and adjustment of medicine-related care plans
  • Performing drug regimen reviews with patients to discuss their prescribed drugs and explain interactions among drugs

Common Pharmacy Practice Settings

Licensed pharmacists can be found working in a variety of practice locations. You are most likely familiar with the role of pharmacists who work in health systems, hospitals, or retail pharmacies. In addition to these practice locations, pharmacists may be found working in:

  • Research positions
  • Clinic-based pharmacies
  • Governmental and non-governmental organizations
  • Veterinary medicine settings
  • Pharmaceutical companies

In each practice location, there are opportunities for pharmacists to make a difference in patient quality of life and healthcare outcomes, whether that is through direct clinical interaction or indirect connections, such as laboratory research and developments in the pharmaceutical industry.

Specialty Roles for Pharmacists

Because of the widespread influence of the pharmaceutical industry, there are many specific and specialized roles for pharmacists in healthcare systems. In addition to common pharmacy practice roles, pharmacists may hold positions in the industry such as:

  • Biomedical researcher
  • Toxicology pharmacist
  • Product development specialist
  • Marketing and pharmaceutical salesperson
  • Drug information associate
  • Quality control chemist

Pharmacists may also choose to work in academic settings to educate the future generation of pharmacists. Examples of academic pharmacy roles include:

  • Clinical preceptor
  • Residency or fellowship coordinator
  • Professor of pharmacodynamics or pharmacokinetics
  • Pharmacy practice researcher
  • Licensing examination moderator

Informatics is another fast-growing pharmacy specialty area. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines health informatics as “...the systematic application of information, computer science, and technology to public health practice, research, and learning.” Some programs of study allow students to attain dual training in pharmacy and health informatics to prepare graduates to serve in pharmacy informatics roles including:

  • Pharmaceutical data analyst
  • Telehealth pharmacy provider
  • Clinical software development pharmacist
  • Clinical software integration specialist
  • Automation pharmacist
  • Provider of virtual pharmaceutical education

Skills for Successful Pharmacy Practice

Skills for Successful Pharmacy Practice

There are also several personality traits and skills that successful pharmacists have that contribute to their passion for helping others in this highly scientific field.

Clinical pharmacists are often required to focus in fast-paced environments where being both detail-oriented and team-oriented are essential skills. In the role of a practicing pharmacist, you may frequently engage in collaboration across disciplines in the medical field. A combination of an analytical mindset, a focus on teamwork, and the desire to help others can be helpful for success in this role. The ability to multitask while focusing on detail, coupled with good communication and interpersonal skills, allows pharmacists to interact effectively with patients, co-workers and other medical personnel.

Empathy and curiosity are also beneficial skills for pharmacists to have, particularly in patient-centered and research-based roles. Familiarity with local laws and pharmaceutical regulations is necessary for pharmacists who prioritize patient safety and wellness.

Pharmacy is a challenging field. Innovations in medication require dedication and commitment to scientific research. Roles in the development and testing of drug therapies are especially fitting for those who enjoy problem-solving and are motivated by the opportunity to impact the lives of others.

Ethical Principles for Pharmacy Practice

Pharmacists have an ever-expanding role in today’s healthcare system where the highest ethical standards are essential. Quality assurance positions within pharmacy development help safeguard the public from harm.

Principles of medical ethics guide the practice of pharmacy. These include principles of:

  • Autonomy (respecting the patient’s right to make decisions)
  • Maleficence (avoiding injury or harm to another)
  • Beneficence (promoting what is good and beneficial)
  • Justice (treatment of people with equality and fairness)
  • Respect (Holding the values and abilities of colleagues and other health professionals in high regard)

A pharmacist must display professional integrity. The faculty mentors who train pharmacists in the values of honesty and accountability truly care about the far-reaching effects of the profession on human lives and recognize the importance of instilling and demonstrating these values during training. When looking for a quality pharmacy program, it is essential to consider how the required values of ethical pharmacy practice are exemplified through the mission and design of the curriculum.

Pharmacists are knowledgeable in the areas of biomedical and pharmaceutical science, but they are also adept at applying this knowledge to real-world scenarios. As patient advocates, pharmacists need a keen ability to critically think through specialized information and complex scenarios to make ethical decisions.

Next, let’s examine the professional qualifications and educational topics that prepare pharmacists for meaningful influence within the healthcare system.

Education and Qualifications for the Pharmacist Role

Pharmacists are academically and experientially prepared to uphold the highest standards of care with both the undergraduate pharmacy courses and when pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree . Topics of study in a pharmacy curriculum include anatomy, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology and statistics, which are directly linked to pharmacy practice. A doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program also includes behavioral, social, and administrative pharmacy sciences along with professional experience in pharmacy practice. The curriculum combines top-notch classroom teaching with early experiential learning to help students apply pharmacy concepts and knowledge in practical ways.

Licensed pharmacists are also required to pass certain examinations to qualify for practice. The process for licensure as a pharmacist following completion of a pharmacy doctorate program is regulated at the state level. There are differences among states, but all states require licensed pharmacists to have passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination ( NAPLEX ).

Because pharmacists are required to operate within rules and regulations for safe and effective practice, many states also require pharmacists to pass the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination ( MPJE ). Details on processes and pharmacist qualifications for each state are available on the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy ( NABP ) website.

Some states require additional training hours after graduation from an approved pharmacy program. If you are looking for the right program, the University of Findlay offers a flexible pathway toward a rewarding career as a pharmacist.

World Pharmacists Day was established by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).
