Sample Statement of Purpose Energy and Environment Management

My focus encompasses Energy and environmental management. Towards future study and research, I would like to empower and build myself on two main components: formulating a way our industries can lessen dependence on the Grid and making a standardized sustainable and energy-independent domestic system based on renewables.

I would like to build upon my final year project on Salinity Gradient Solar Pond (SGSP) for the practicum industrial research. This is a one of its kind and the first pilot-scale Solar Pond that has been installed at Tulane University. Proudly I have been the pioneer of this research delivery. SGSP can enable the energy-starved industries to utilize the waste brine, a common byproduct of numerous chemical processes, by storing solar Energy and producing electricity. This snugly synchronizes with the university’s objective of meeting the energy crises and typically would involve cross-cultural interaction as the world’s largest solar pond is constructed at El Paso by the University of Texas.

The project inspires me for numerous reasons: it focuses on a sustainable, zero waste recycling system that would help the industries producing excessive brine with disposal issues and thus causing harm to the environment; SGSP can not only utilize this brine but also store solar Energy in the pond that can be extracted from heat exchangers. El- Paso Solar Pond has been operational since 1986, providing 70 kW of electricity to the Bruce Foods Corporation, enabling the industry to reduce the load on the Grid. Thus, in our industries, where they primarily depend on diesel, which costs up to about 27 cents/ kWh, this would be a cheaper solution that would eventually protect the environment.

Dr John Walton, Professor of SGSP at the University of Texas at El Paso, retired in Spring 2015. However, Dr Huanmin Lu has been publishing his articles internationally, accompanied by Dr John Walton, since 2011, and I would like to seek their work to gain valuable insights. Throughout my stay at Yale, I would like to work in an existing solar pond where the literature review will be conducted for the first two months. Upon completing this, I would like to understand how industries cannot just manage brine but also produce electricity from it. This is very important for me to grasp since only El Paso Solar Pond has been able to produce electricity and power. Such implementations can be easily proposed in our industries since most are in a far fledge area with large acres of land.

For domestic scale energy systems, I advocate two options: energy conservation and energy independence. While energy conservation can be easily acquired by replacing energy-efficient lights or inverter ACs, energy independence would require costly large-scale installations. So, I would like to propose an efficient model that can minimize the load by 70%. Furthermore, given that the net metering concept has been recently introduced, I would like to understand a feasible model that caters for all of these factors with the energy source primarily renewable, mainly like solar, micro hydel scale plants and Hydel. While advancements are made, there is no proper model upon which a middle-class person can adopt energy conservation and independence simultaneously, that too through Renewables.

During my encounter with Energy Policy Specialist Nameerah Hameed at the Annual Energy Conference by Vestas, I found out that Energy Department is working on making an Energy Resource Center as an example with the help of Carpus + Partner & Giz; I still think that such a centre would not cater for demands of the majority of the urban population. We need to design a cost-effective yet energy-efficient and energy-independent household so that the load on our Grid can be reduced while simultaneously relying on a sustainable model. Hence, I believe our government should have a valuable human resource in our hometown so that people like me can contribute and help them achieve their goals.

Primarily, my interest in Energy developed by comparing my courses in air, water and noise pollution with the existing crises. Although environmental threats are immense throughout the world, US’s major problem does not lie around its Air Quality Index reaching a dangerous level like China. Still, it is facing an inevitable plethora of crises in terms of Energy! Therefore, as an environmentalist, I would like to amalgamate the subjects like Energy Resources and Management and Cleaner Production Techniques to apply my technical skills to advanced renewable energy systems and their management so that we quantify how renewables can enable environmental protection and provide energy security.”

Personal Statement - Environmental Science

Environmental science personal statement.

I turned to her and asked "Why do you love your job so much?" Her reply was simple, yet powerful, "I am able to help something which is defenceless". This exchange of words took place while flying to Colorado, speaking to a woman whose job it was to work alongside oil companies to research their environmental impact on the physical landscape around them. As the conversation continued over the duration of the flight, I became inspired by the projects she had worked upon and started to realise that a subject I had enjoyed taking at school could progress into further education, and on to higher education. My love for the environment has stemmed from my appreciation for the natural power that it holds, and how something we have taken for granted, such as water, can cause a catastrophe like the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. This, coupled with an inspiring Geography teacher in secondary school has led me to explore these topics further through education and personal interest. The media often only expresses the social and medical impacts that natural disasters have on our society, such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and the outbreak of Cholera. They focus less on the physical impacts these events can have to our environment, for instance Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991 having an effect on the global climate. I am particularly captivated by volcanoes and the processes of an eruption. My interest in this area increased after studying the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption and looking at the events surrounding and during the eruption, such as the pyroclastic flow. Understanding why these events happen has intrigued me. My enthusiasm for skiing has allowed me to travel to different environments, such as the Rocky Mountains and Glaciers in Europe, and see the earth's formation in a visual perspective which can only be described as awe-inspiring. I have also travelled to Belize, and experienced the incredible 'Great Blue Hole' located near the Lighthouse Reef. My experiences with different environments has given me an unconditional respect for the power of our earth. I am currently attending an Access to Higher Education; Social Sciences course, on which I study Environmental Studies, Biology, Sociology and Psychology. This course has not only provided me with the educational requirements I need to progress into higher education, but has allowed me to develop my personal skills in organisation, independent study, essay and report writing, ICT skills and the ability to embrace new concepts. Alongside my studies, I have committed my time to reading various environmental research journals and articles, and watch documentaries, including Planet Earth and Blue Planet. Making myself aware of environmental issues and the development of the earth has assisted me in understanding in more depth the subjects that I study. The opportunity to study at University will allow me to understand the environment in a more advanced manner and develop my understanding in a topic that I am fascinated by. This will empower me to focus my academic studies into an area which I love in more depth and which will give me the technical skills and knowledge I require to progress further in this subject than I would without University education. As the environment and the impacts we have on it is becoming an increasing worry for our society, studying in this subject area at university will put me into a position to be able to help understand, research and combat these issues. Being able to study the earth's environment will not only fulfil a desire I have to further understand the natural processes, but allow me to be a part of a movement that will inspire a younger generation, like I was inspired, to be educated on the environment and proceed to carry on the work of the many scientists, researchers and other personnel to understand our planet and create a more sustainable and resourceful way of living.

Universities Applied to:

  • University of Durham (Earth Sciences) - Rejection
  • University of Leicester (Physical Geography) - Offer (Distinction in all Units)
  • University of Southampton (Geography) - Withdrew
  • University of Portsmouth (Environmental Science) - Offer (Merits in all Units) Firm
  • University of East Anglia (Environmental Sciences) - Offer (Pass of Access to HE course) Insurance

Grades Achieved:

  • Access to HE - Biology - Merit
  • Access to HE - Environmental Studies - Distinction
  • Access to HE - Psychology - Merit
  • Access to HE - Sociology - Merit

I am a mature student (21) and decided to go back to education to gain a university standard education. Due to the courses around me, I was forced to take a Social Sciences Access to HE course rather than a pure Sciences course, which obviously was less than optimal for a pure science based subject.

I did not receive an offer to Durham, which was to be expected and withdrew my application from Southampton due to not being impressed when the course on my interview day.I received offers from UEA, Portsmouth and Leicester, but decided overall to go with Portsmouth due to the content of the course and the possibility of continuing to do a masters at the university which is extremely interesting to me (Masters in Geological and Environmental Hazards).

Comments from both UEA and Southampton on my interview day reguarded my personal statement as 'Excellent' and commenting on the introduction into the personal statement as eye-catching. I attempted to put as much of my interests to do with the subject in my personal statement, including some personal experiences. I also wanted to express the passion I have for the Physical side of the subject, Rather than the human side.

personal statement environmental management

Environmental Health Personal Statement

Sample Environmental Health Personal Statement

I had a highly dramatic introduction to the importance of environmental health through my involvement in my father’s business. When I was younger his catering company received a visit from an environmental health officer, who identified a series of lapses in the business’s compliance with environmental health legislation. I was present when the potentially devastating health implications of these breaches was made clear and the case for continual vigilance and rigorous safeguards was presented to my father.

It was an experience that completely changed the way I thought about the world around me. It is easy to take public health for granted when living in the developed world, as we seldom see the consequences of it on a day-to-day basis unless, of course, you are a specialist in the field. However, the public’s continued wellbeing and safety from environmental health threats is, I have come to realise, largely due to the existence of experts who are empowered through their scientific knowledge and legislation to make sure that businesses comply with very high environmental health standards, thus protecting the public from illness and exposure to harmful materials. I have always wanted to follow a profession that makes use of my potential for scientific and technical expertise to help society, and since that day my goal has been to pursue this ambition through working in environmental health.

I have taken a very proactive approach to fulfilling this ambition in the form of completing various environmental health courses. To date I have completed the Level 2 Award for Food Safety in Catering and the Level 3 Awards in Supervising Health Safety in Catering and in Supervising Health and Safety in the workplace. Through completing these courses I have developed an excellent foundational grounding in the key issues surrounding methods for safeguarding public health through best environmental practices. I have learnt about the ways in which infections or diseases can be transmitted and the underlying principles behind environmental health legislation. However, I recognise that these certificates do not constitute true expertise in the area of environmental health, something which I am eager to attain through completing postgraduate study.

The MSc in Environmental Health at Middlesex University seems to offer an unparalleled level of thoroughness in its approach to this field. As a discipline environmental health is very much an interdisciplinary field of studies, with environmental health professionals needing both a theoretical and scientific knowledge of health issues and expertise in practical issues of policy implementation and legal matters, amongst others. I believe that the course would be the ideal starting point from which I can then go on to pursue a career as an environmental health practitioner, whether in the public or private sector.

I believe that my previous and current work and study experiences demonstrate my ability to succeed in both postgraduate studies and a career in environmental health. My current studies in Mathematics and Statistics have helped me to develop a highly analytical, logical and methodical mind that is perfectly suited to the demands of appraising complex information, a skill that is essential for environmental health practitioners. I have also held a variety of professional roles that have helped me to develop into an able communicator, manager and problem solver. I have been working since 2008 as an interpreter at the South Korean Embassy in London. In addition to carrying out interpreting work on the behalf of Korean nationals in need of the Embassy’s services, I have also been involved with visits from important statespeople from Canada, the UN and South Korea. This role demands excellent communication skills to make sure both parties involved in the conversation fully understand what the other party is trying to convey, just as it is important for environmental health inspectors to be able to communicate vital information to business owners. I also have considerable managerial experience through both running my own business for a year and being responsible for the event management of the South Korean Olympic team this summer, a role that involved liaising with hotel owners, transport companies and other stakeholders.

I have also had the chance in recent years to make use of my spare time to learn more about environmental health questions. For example, I recently completed a Japanese cookery course while I was on holiday in South Korea. The extensive use of seafood and rice in Japanese cuisine means that this style of cooking requires the utmost respect for and a great understanding of health issues, and for this reason the course was an excellent way of gaining a better practical understanding of environmental health in the workplace. I have also recently completed a month of voluntary work in rural South Korea. Working in an underdeveloped region as it faces the environmental challenges of modernisation and economic growth placed my interest in environmental health into a much broader context, making me realise that environmental health issues often go beyond the confines of individual businesses. I believe that the MSc in Environmental Health will be the perfect opportunity to learn more about these matters before I proceed to a career in this most important of professional sectors.

We hope this Environmental Health Personal Statement has been useful to you.

Why Is It So Important to Adhere to University Guidelines?

One of the most important rules in personal statement writing is adhering to the institute guidelines. Your university may want you to answer specific questions in the personal statement so as to decide whether you fit into their particular program and the student community. When you present a personal statement that doesn’t provide enough insights into their prompts, they are most likely to reject your application.

What Is the Admission Committee Looking for?

  • Firstly, check if you have been asked to answer any particular prompts in your personal statement. Address those points without any failure.
  • Your motivations behind choosing environmental science as your higher study field.
  • Your career aspirations after completing Environmental science graduation.
  • Examples of your achievements, experience, skills or strengths. Anything you claim must be supported by evidence
  • How much you know about environmental science, its scope and today’s relevance

Six Quick Steps for Writing a Winning Environmental Science Personal Statement

The following six easy steps would simplify the process of writing your personal statement for environmental science.

Decide how to present yourself:

You need to present yourself in the best way in your personal statement. Brainstorm and choose your proudest qualities, strengths, skills and achievements to write about in your statement.

Get to know about your program:

Try to gather details about your university’s specific environmental science program. Also, do general reading about environmental science and enhance your awareness. This will help you in the writing stage.

Practice talking:

Once you have a mental picture of what you are going to write in the introduction and body paragraphs, speak out those points loudly and see how it sounds. Does it represent you in a natural way? Doing this exercise a few times is a good preparation method.

Get familiar with the format:

Get familiar with the format for writing your personal statement. You can do this by reviewing a couple of environmental science personal statement examples. Also, check whether your institute has given any specific format to use.

Prepare an outline and write:

Based on the points and format you have found out, prepare an outline first. After that, develop your essay slowly building on the outline. This method will ensure all points are properly addressed.

Proofread, edit and finalize:

Once completed, read through your statement carefully word by word at least four to five times. Correct all the mistakes. Simplify ambiguous sentences. It is good to have your essay reviewed by someone else before finalizing it.

Example 1 – personal Statement for Masters in Environmental Science

Asteroid strikes, pandemics, nuclear wars and climate change: I believe these elements have something in common. All these catastrophes have the power to wipe away human existence from the earth. It was in my sixth grade that I decided to be an environmentalist, as I got introduced to the subject as a part of my academics. The utter nonchalance of public and government authorities to the staring crises around us further intensified the desire in me to explore this domain.

I clearly recall an incident when I was in my eleventh grade. I happened to come across the official video of Michael Jackson’s ‘The Earth Song’. A few minutes later, I found myself in tears. Well, my friends called this a trivial weakness, but I felt something different moaning deep within me. I realized that the very person next to me might be indifferent to what I perceive, or how I interpret indiscriminate cruelty towards nature.

During weekends, I find my neighbours engaged with catastrophic films. Well, I believe this is a kind of morbid obsession that another group of people tends to commercialize. Altogether, I feel the world pacing towards a painful destruction. I also find little connection between this cinematic masochism to what awaits our subsequent generations. As a responsible citizen, I feel helpless as I find hedges mowed over, or rainforests burning to ashes.

My natural obsession with nature, and deep-rooted love for the world’s raw charm further complement my efforts. I wish I had the power to make people wake up from their materialistic slumber to come together and build a more sustainable future. In an effort to empower myself with the ability to show the way, I have decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering. I am keen to know the efficiency of existing mechanisms to combat global warming or climate change, and devise further enhancements in the contemporary systems.

Given that I am in the final year of my geography Honours course, I also have a deep interest in atmospheric sciences. So far, my graduation years have been rewarding indeed. The humane aspect in natural aspects of nature amazes me more than anything else. Besides, I have utilized my practical opportunities like academic projects to gain substantial knowledge about the country’s natural resources, and the existing mechanisms to protect the same. To complement my efforts to further bolster these processes, I look forward to acquiring a specialized degree in Environmental Science. Enhancing my core skills along with my organizational and managerial abilities, I wish to embrace a gratifying career in India or abroad.

Presently, I am working on a project for my final year, based on the impact of fossil fuels on the environment. In this project, my aim is to come up with an efficient and eco-friendly strategy to replace fossil fuels in the global industrial sector, gradually embracing natural alternatives. Besides, I have published a paper in an international journal based on my findings, titled ‘Our Planet, Our Responsibilities’. Through this project, I gained significant knowledge on the importance of energy conservation. Besides, it significantly strengthened my communication and presentation skills.

The advanced program that your university offers would significantly enhance my graphical and analytical skills. Besides, I have the prospect of exciting field trips. Considering my love to explore places and learn about their natural resources, I believe it to be the right decision to pursue a course in environmental science. The enriched academic infrastructure at your institution, along with the opportunity to gain knowledge directly from seasoned faculty, would significantly leverage my profile. This program will reinforce my knowledge and interest in the global environment. On completing this course, I will gain the ability to clearly demonstrate the importance of conserving plants and wildlife on the earth, while altering our habits to mitigate carbon footprints on the environment.

As a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual, I believe that my concern for our subsequent generations is the driving force for my career choice. Given that I have attended an international school during my Intermediates, I am confident in my abilities to integrate myself into the progressive academic environment. By transforming my skills, I will be able to fervently contribute to the global efforts of developing a sustainable environment.

Five Blunders to Avoid in Environmental Science Personal Statement Writing

Modifying samples:.

While it is okay to review environmental science personal statement examples to increase your understanding of its structure, it is a grave mistake to modify a sample to suit your case.

Not being specific:

The admission panel is looking for an essay that says how closely you fit into their environmental science program. A case-specific approach in writing is needed.

Sounding too negative:

It is good to balance your negatives and positives but do not dwell too much on the negatives. Even if there are any negatives, try to show how you overcame them.

Cliches in the writing style:

The admission committee is expecting a unique and personalized essay from you, not the kind of cliched environmental science personal statement examples on the internet.

Writing one for all:

If you are applying to multiple universities, you need to present a tailor-made personal statement for each of those. Don’t write a single personal statement in hope of using it for all.

How Do Experts Format a Personal Statement?

  • Set the font to a readable size: 12 points is ideal.
  • Justify the text
  • Use an academically acceptable format – Arial and Times New Roman are best for the purpose
  • Don’t use multiple fonts. Choose one font and use that consistently
  • Don’t add colour to the text

Ensure Your Essay Ticks All the Below Checkboxes

Don’t rush to finalize your personal statement for environmental science. Go through it and ensure that your writeup ticks all the below checkboxes.

  • Have I personalized it?
  • Have I provided enough evidence and examples to solidify my claims?
  • Have I used the correct format?
  • Have I met the requirements given by the university?
  • Have I exceeded or come short of the recommended word count?

Environmental engineering personal statement example.

Nowadays, Environmental Engineering plays a vital role in the world as the environment is being put under constantly increasing pressure. As I am fascinated by Science and Mathematics and feel that the environment is incredibly important, I decided to study this course.

I have always been intrigued by the mechanics of the universe and hence I quickly developed an interest in science and the subjects explaining everything from simple events of everyday life to the very complex phenomenon which is the Big Bang.

I particularly enjoy Mechanical Physics because I like to observe my environment and understand how it works, and so the initial introduction to this subject interested me even more and my curiosity pushed me to go into it in greater depth.

I recently discovered a more developed mathematical aspect of it, which is Linear Algebra, and after a quick overview of it, I became enthusiastic and purchased a book entitled “Linear Algebra for Dummies” which I am sure will be an intriguing experience.

Mathematics! One of my favourite subjects since primary school. I have always loved the excitement you get when you finish a complicated problem, or when you find the missing piece of a tricky puzzle, which makes all the effort worthwhile. I have never had any trouble understanding Mathematics and I always enjoyed challenging myself during my spare time by doing the most complex exercises in my Maths books.

Back when I was in my first year of secondary school, I participated with my class in the departmental contest called “Rallye Mathématique” in Nice. The aim was to do as many maths problems as possible in a certain amount of time, and we gained two things: first place in the competition and most of all, an experience where we learned to help each other and work together as a team.

During the last few years, I've really appreciated doing more and more difficult equations as I considered them a challenge to my logic and mind, trying every possible technique and wondering for hours how to find the solution to a very delicate equation. As a result, I always felt rewarded when I finally solved it.

My interest in Mathematics pushed me to choose Further Mathematics in my last year, in which I studied a new and attractive branch of the subject. Additionally to these two courses, the French system also gave me access to other fascinating subjects such as Philosophy, Biology and Geology.

Sport has always been one of my passions. I am currently playing two fantastic games : basketball, in the top division of the department; and also rugby sevens at an academic level in a special sport section called “Sevens Academy” which is a unique experience in France.

These two sports have helped me develop certain qualities: perseverance, teamwork and communication, due to the constant need to push further as a team. What's more, as I am the point guard of my basketball team, I play an important role and I have to be very lucid as basketball victories lie in teamwork and the efforts provided by the point guard to have a quick and fluid game. I want to continue with sport during my college years since it’s an important part of my life.

Being in an international school, I have been able to become fully bilingual. I speak French and English and have some notions of Italian which gives me the advantage of being immersed in different cultures and international literature.

Another thing which I feel has made me a more open-minded person is my travel experience throughout Europe. I am deeply looking forward to University since it will provide me with a stimulating environment where I will be able to try new sports and even learn Chinese, which I find an interesting language. It will provide me with a solid start in life as well, which will hopefully lead me to work in environmental engineering or possibly do further studies.

Peter G's Comments

This is the final version of my personal statement which I sent, I managed to get the universities I wanted : Southampton and Exeter. As I am a french student doing an OIB program, they asked me grades for the French Bac : Southampton : 14 Overall, 14 in Maths and 14 in Physics. Exeter : 13 Overall, 12 in Maths and 10 in English. These grades are good for the French OIB Bac as 14 could be considered as AAA.

SEIA Statement on BLM Opening 31 Million Acres of Public Land for Solar Development Across 11 Western States

Thursday, Aug 29 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today the Bureau of Land Management released a final environmental review of the Western Solar Plan, also known as the Solar Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS).

The Solar PEIS is a foundational environmental planning document that determines where solar development can occur on public lands in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Following is a statement from Ben Norris, vice president of regulatory affairs at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) on the developments from BLM:

“Today, the Bureau of Land Management opened 31 million acres of federal lands to renewable energy development, accepting many of SEIA’s recommendations to strike a better balance between its conservation and clean energy deployment goals.

“For over 12 years SEIA has advocated for leveling the playing field for renewables and increasing public land access for solar and storage development. While we’re still reviewing the details, we’re pleased to see that BLM listened to much of the solar industry’s feedback and added 11 million acres to its original proposal. While this is a step in the right direction, fossil fuels have access to over 80 million acres of public land, 2.5 times the amount of public land available for solar.

“One of the fastest ways to decarbonize our grid is to greenlight well-planned clean energy development on federal lands, and the improvements to this environmental review document will certainly help. We will continue to work with BLM and other federal agencies to promote responsible clean energy development on public lands and streamline the permitting process.”

About SEIA®:

The Solar Energy Industries Association® (SEIA) is leading the transformation to a clean energy economy, creating the framework for solar to achieve 30% of U.S. electricity generation by 2030. SEIA works with its 1,000 member companies and other strategic partners to fight for policies that create jobs in every community and shape fair market rules that promote competition and the growth of reliable, low-cost solar power. Founded in 1974, SEIA is the national trade association for the solar and solar + storage industries, building a comprehensive vision for the Solar+ Decade through research, education and advocacy.
