This fully online degree is a groundbreaking new program that targets nurses who want to lead.

We know nurses who want to transition into leadership roles are busy. That is exactly why the Southern Miss online PhD in nursing leadership never requires you to come to campus. The first-of-its-kind degree allows nurses to earn their PhD while not interrupting their busy schedule.

RELATED: Educating the next generation: Nurses giving back.

Nurses work long hours and odd schedules to ensure their patients are healthy and well taken care of. They look out for each other in many ways from covering a shift for a friend to working overtime, so a colleague can make their child’s extracurricular activities. The bonds they make are everlasting, so naturally they want to give back to their profession and fellow nurses. One of the best ways to do that is by sharing the years of experience with the next generation of nurses.

Don’t miss your chance to change your life and the lives of others. The application deadline for the fully online Nursing Leadership PhD is March 1st. If you are interested in taking that next step in your leadership career, learn more on our Nursing Leadership PhD page and start your application today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding the different programs, what is the difference between a phd and a dnp, what is the difference between the post-master’s dnp and the dnp in executive leadership tracks, program, plan of study, and cohort, is the program fully online are the online classes held live or asynchronously.

Yes, the program is fully online with   synchronous, with the exception of limited synchronous online sessions and one 5-day in-person intensive for the Executive Leadership track .   Course content is delivered asynchronously; individual courses may have a limited number of synchronous requirements to facilitate specific course learning objectives that are also made available in asynchronous format. Every course offers virtual, synchronous office hours with course facult y.

I only see a Plan of Study with 2 courses per semester. Can I just take 1 class a semester?

We encourage all students to take 2 courses/term   to   remain within your cohort which is known to   improve   adult le arners’   outcomes and supports   networking and teamwork, but we understand that life circumstances can be unpredictable. If you have questions about a different pace of study, please contact your respective   track   director.

Can I take electives or online classes at other Penn graduate schools?

Penn students are encouraged to explore opportunities to learn in courses offered across the University. There are no required electives in the DNP Plan of Study. If students want to consider additional course work outside the DNP Plan of Study, consultation with an academic advisor is strongly recommended before registering for any additional/extra coursework.

Do I need to know my DNP project topic before I apply?

It is not necessary to know your DNP project topic before you apply and, in fact, we expect this to be an iterative process. As you engage in coursework and explore   the literature , we encourage you to be curious and think critically about potential areas for practice change in your organization or specialty.

How will I be matched with a Faculty Mentor for my DNP Project and who comprises my DNP Project Team?

DNP faculty collaborate with students throughout the program but particularly in the project courses to mentor them through various stages of the DNP project including development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination. Students also work with respective institutional site leaders who guide them in identifying organizational needs and working with key stakeholders. For more information about the DNP Scholarly Project, please consult the DNP Handbook .

Can I work while in the program?

Yes, in fact we encourage you to work while in the program as your practice can inform your learning and scholarship. Students often complete their DNP project (usually a quality improvement/practice change initiative) at their site of employment which not only benefits their institution but also showcases your scholarly work.

What are the program intensives?

The DNP in Executive Leadership program hosts an all-day synchronous online intensive for first year DNP students at the end of August, at the onset of year one. This is an important, required event that helps DNP students to become familiar with University of Pennsylvania and School of Nursing education resources, develop specific insights for educational expectations of the DNP program, meet DNP faculty, and build relationships and network amongst your cohort. In addition, students participate in workshops that address evidence translation, leadership, and scholarship, including scholarly writing. A second all-day synchronous online intensive for second year DNP students is positioned at the end of August, prior to year two to prepare students for project development. During this intensive, you will meet with course faculty and participate in data analytics and project proposal planning activities to launch the second year Fall semester coursework. Additionally, DNP-EL students meet on-campus for five days during the first Fall semester in December for the Wharton Nursing Leaders Program.

How many students are in a cohort?

For the DNP-EL, there are approximately 10-20 students in a cohort.

Types of Online PhD Nursing Programs

These are the three most common degrees for a doctoral degree in nursing. Click on the one that most interests you to jump to that section.

PhD in Nursing Education

Phd in healthcare leadership.

Each one can help prepare you for a different career in the medical field.

head nurse talking to fellow nurses in hospital

A doctor of philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Education can help prepare you to teach nursing at the university level.

As a practicing nurse yourself, you may have the experience and expertise for delivering high-quality care in a clinical setting. Your doctorate coursework can help you become an expert teacher as well so that you can pass on what you’ve learned to upcoming nurses.

The curriculum for this program typically focuses on learning theories and teaching strategies, curriculum development, how to evaluate nursing students, and the ethics of nursing.

After you graduate, you may become a professor, a professional trainer at a hospital, or a dedicated researcher who presents new findings to the nursing world. In any of these roles, you may be shaping the future of the medical field as you teach or otherwise inform nursing professionals.

nurses having an administrative meeting

With a PhD in Healthcare Leadership or Healthcare Management, you might teach at a university or continue working in a clinical setting as an administrator.

Your courses will likely focus on setting a vision for your institution, monitoring and evaluating your organization’s performance, financial management, patient care, and applicable laws and regulations.

You might also take classes that address specific issues or help you to develop certain skills, such as opioid medicines, environmental safety, health management information systems, research methods and statistics, and public speaking.

If you enjoy the business side of the medical world and want to make a real difference in your institution, this may be the track for you.

The two main options for graduates with this degree is to become a hospital or office administrator or to become a nurse practitioner. You may also serve as a trainer in your organization.

If you choose to go in the direction of administration, you might be a nurse manager or help to set policy for your organization. Your coursework will likely focus on delivering excellent patient care, management, and financial responsibility.

The second popular option is to study to be a nurse practitioner. While this degree doesn’t qualify you to be a doctor per se, you can perform many functions that a doctor does, including seeing and diagnosing patients, administering anesthesia, and delivering babies as a nurse midwife.

You’ll work under a doctor who approves any medicine prescriptions or certain treatment plans.

What Is the Difference between a DNP and a PhD in Nursing?

The main differences between a PhD and DNP include the following:

As you can see, the average salary range is fairly close, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The gap between PhD nursing programs and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs  boils down to what you plan on doing once you complete your coursework and how long your program will take.

PhD students focus on research and the development of nursing theory, as well as how to communicate with students and other parties once these graduates take on positions within the educational field. Though the coursework is shorter, PhD students will likely need to write a dissertation to demonstrate their research skills and expertise over the subject matter.

On the other hand, DNP students plan to put this research and exploration of theory to practice in a more hands-on manner. Members of this group specialize in the application of their learning via clinical practice and administration. They might manage other nurses or serve as a family nurse practitioner  in a doctor’s office.

DNP students typically spend longer in their programs, but their final projects aren’t usually as time-consuming as writing a dissertation.

Accreditation for Doctoral Nursing Programs

logos of accreditation boards for nursing programs

When you’re looking for a university to attend, make sure that it is properly accredited. Accreditation by an independent third-party can help ensure that your university and nursing program meets the highest standards. Your university as a whole should be accredited by one of these six regional boards.

  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
  • WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC)

The university’s nursing program could also be accredited by either the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc . Note that it is not necessary to have these program-specific accreditations.

Financial Aid for Students in Online Nursing PhD or DNP Programs

screenshot of FAFSA website

Financial aid is not just for undergrads. Doctoral students can take advantage of it as well. And earning your degree online or on campus doesn’t affect the aid that you qualify for.

When you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) , you’ll see what grants and loans you qualify for. You can then look for scholarship opportunities at your university or through private organizations. Your university may also offer you a fellowship.

Talk to your employer about possible tuition assistance or tuition reimbursement programs. Also, look into any potential accelerated nursing programs to help reduce the time it takes you earn your PhD.

Questions Related to Earning Your PhD in Nursing

Here are our answers to a few more questions you might have about earning your doctorate in nursing.

What Is a PhD in Nursing?

Usually spanning between 60 and 80 credit hours of coursework, most PhD in nursing programs cover the research of nursing best practices in the clinical, academic, and scientific environments. However, the application of managerial theory and administrative concepts also serves as a building block of this graduate-level learning experience.

PhD in nursing programs cater to nursing students and established practitioners alike. While returning to the medical industry is definitely a possibility, most recipients of this degree remain in the academic world, seeking tenure at accepting institutions and teaching others via experiential learning.

How Much Does a Nurse with a PhD Make?

Having a PhD puts you higher than students with a bachelor’s or even master’s degree.  For example, nurse instructors with a master’s in nursing education earn $74,600 on average. The highest earning potential for a nurse PhD as a professor is $133,460 on average (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Salary differences are mainly a result of a person’s experience, medical organizations or universities that a person works for, and the location where they live.

Do DNP Get Paid More than NP?

No, a DNP does not get paid more than an NP because they are essentially the same thing. DNP stands for Doctor of Nursing Practice and is the degree that a Nurse Practitioner (NP) holds.

Is a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Worth It?

happy nurse assisting a female patient

Yes, a doctor of philosophy in nursing is worth it for many students. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is projecting 15% job growth in healthcare occupations over the next 10 years. Common careers in this field include acute care nurse practitioner, chief nursing officer, and nursing instructor.

It may take a lot of hard work completing the classes and writing your dissertation, but you’ve come this far in your education and career, so with determination, you can finish your doctoral degree as well.

You can start by deciding which degree you want – a PhD in Nursing Education, a PhD in Healthcare Leadership, or a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Then, narrow down your choice of schools by degree offering and possible concentrations. Apply to your top 3-5 choices and research financial aid opportunities.

In 3-5 years, you may be finished with your degree and an expert in your field.

Leading Healthcare into the Future

“Leadership and management skills are required to be an effective healthcare leader. UCF was the clear choice for my MSN. It gave me the education needed to lead the nursing enterprise into the future.”

Trish Celano ’10MSN, RN Associate Chief Clinical Officer | Senior Vice President | Chief Nurse Executive, AdventHealth

To apply to this program, you will need to meet the following:

  • You fulfill the general UCF graduate admissions requirements ( see Admissions section of the UCF Graduate Catalog ).
  • You are a licensed RN for the state or country in which you practice.
  • have a BSN degree from a regionally accredited institution and program accredited by either CCNE or ACEN, OR
  • are a RN with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree .
  • You completed and passed an undergraduate statistics course.

Please note:  Online programs do not meet immigration requirements for students holding an F1 or J1 Visa to maintain status. If you have questions, please contact UCF Global at global.ucf.edu or call 407-823-2337.

Didactic instruction is fully online and provided in an asynchronous format. However, the MSN in Leadership and Management program requires practice hours in two courses (see plan of study ).

These hours are related to the practice of nursing leadership and management. Students cannot be involved in direct delivery of patient care as part of these practice experiences.

Yes, you may pursue this UCF College of Nursing online program as long as you will be physically located in a Nurse Licensure Compact  (NLC) state for the duration of your education.

UCF College of Nursing faculty are authorized to teach in NLC states. Due to nursing education restrictions imposed by non-NLC states, UCF is unable to offer courses, clinicals, or other educational services regardless of modality within non-NLC states. Should you be physically located within a non-NLC state for more than a vacation or brief visit, regardless of your legal state of residence or the type of license you have, you will be unable to apply or continue your nursing degree program at the UCF College of Nursing. This includes, but is not limited to, students accepting traveling nurse positions in a non-Nurse Licensure Compact state. Although Colorado is a NLC state, the UCF College of Nursing cannot enroll students who will complete clinical practice hours there due to Colorado statute requirements for worker’s compensation insurance coverage.

UCF is also an approved institution of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA) . Membership in NC-SARA requires the university to disclose information regarding state licensing and certification requirements for the selected program of study when licensing and/or certification are a requirement to practice in the profession after graduation.

While licensure or certification may be available in this field of study, this program does not lead to such licensure or certification upon graduation. The professional preparation you receive in our program may still assist you in such pursuits; however, we are unable to confirm the specific licensure and certification requirements of each state, territory, or foreign entity in which professional credentialing may be possible. If you intend to pursue such credentialing in your state or elsewhere, we advise you to contact the applicable state credentialing authority to familiarize yourself with its specific requirements and determine if our program meets its academic criteria.

You are welcome to contact the College of Nursing’s  Assistant Dean of Students  with questions in this regard, and we will do our best to assist you in your career planning.

UCF College of Nursing requires students admitted to the MSN in Leadership and Management program to identify a practice site and an appropriate preceptor for that site. Typically practice hours are completed in the student’s place of employment as long as an affiliation agreement is in place or can be secured ( see more details below ).

UCF College of Nursing maintains many affiliation agreements throughout the State of Florida. Please check with your organization to determine if an affiliation agreement is in place.

If there is not an affiliation agreement, please contact the College of Nursing Graduate Office at [email protected] or 407-823-2744 immediately upon notification of admission to the MSN in Nursing Leadership and Management program.

Students may not complete practice hours without a UCF affiliation agreement in place prior to the start of the practice hours.

Your preceptor needs to be employed by the institution in which you will complete your practice hours. Your preceptor:

  • cannot be your direct report;
  • must be a RN working in a nursing leadership role; and
  • must be master’s prepared. The master’s degree does not need to be in nursing, but must be related to practice in a nursing leadership role.

There is no preference given to full-time applicants in the MSN Leadership and Management program. In fact, the majority of students are part-time.

Visit our MSN Admissions page for details on the application process and requirements.
