Movie Review: Toofan

 Toofaan Story: The life of Aziz Ali aka Ajju bhai (Farhan Akhtar), a street ruffian, debt collector and henchman of a criminal overlord changes overnight after he falls in love with a righteous doctor Ananya (Mrunal Thakur). She asks him to make a choice. Does he see himself as Ajju wasooli bhai or Aziz Ali, a respected boxer?

Toofaan Review: A good hearted Parsi gym owner in the neighbourhood, introduces the legendary Muhammad Ali’s videos to Aziz. ‘Boxing Aur bhaigiri mein yahi farak hai. Boxing is a sport that needs technique, discipline and patience, not just strength,’ he clarifies. Recognising his potential and the expert training he deserves, Aziz is recommended to a widely respected boxing coach Nana Prabhu (Paresh Rawal). The Dadar veteran is wary of a Muslim guy from Dongri with notorious background but agrees to take him under his wing. He even bestows him with the title ‘Toofaan’ (unstoppable storm) but this near perfect coach-protege relationship takes an ugly turn when things get personal.

Forbidden love, casual bigotry, communal harmony, making of a boxer and redemption of a disgraced athlete… Toofaan tries to tread several paths at once. In doing so, the fictional tale loosely feels like a mishmash of several films you may have seen before… Ghulam, Sultan, Mukkabaaz. Given the fact that Toofaan sees Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra reuniting with his solid Bhaag Milkha Bhaag team — Farhan Akhtar and Shankar Ehsaan-Loy, one expects nothing less than fireworks. What you get is a run of the mill story told in an over-simplistic way. A few empty punches, a few solid blows, lot of evading the opponent and eventually tiring out the vibe, Toofaan is an odd mix of succumbing to and destroying the stereotypes. Love lies at the heart of the story but boxing drives the narrative. The juggling doesn’t seem organic and feels a lot like one interrupting the other.

You always have a choice, believes Ananya. To uproot yourself from the world you were born into and upgrade, isn’t easy. The film’s protagonist does it without batting an eye and you hope to follow his journey, inner conflict and boxing skill. The focus however, shifts to a conventional interfaith love story, societal scrutiny, parental outrage and boxing as an extended highlight.

The film’s strongest portions revolve around its modest and realistic setting, the coach-protégé relationship and confrontation on communal discourse. Strangely these scenes are cut short and emotions curbed in order to keep the story moving. The story gives an impression that it wishes to delve into issues like religious tolerance, empathy and prejudice but settles on merely scratching the surface.

After Bandra boy Ranveer Singh rapped his way into your heart through the gullies of Dharavi in Gully Boy, you have Farhan Akhtar doing some Phoda phodi in Dongri in Toofaan. While Ranveer still has a mainstream appeal, Farhan’s thinking urban persona can be overwhelming. The actor-writer-director takes his time but manages to mould himself into a character that isn’t remotely close to his sensibility. As far as his physical transformation is concerned, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag has already proved his sincerity and determination to look the part. It’s everything or nothing for Farhan and he sticks to the plan this time around as well. His face off with renowned Indian boxers like Neeraj Goyat, Gaganpreet Sharma is captivating.

Paresh Rawal gives the film its finest moments by merely shooting a glance at his highly misunderstood boxer. He, along with Dr Mohan Agashe show you how good actors can elevate a standard script. Mrunal Thakur essays her role in an undramatic, earnest manner. What also stands out is characters not wallowing in self pity when in crisis or pretending to be something they are not. Aziz unabashedly admits, “Boxing mein jo foda fodi hai, Woh Kareeb hai apne.”

Overall, Toofaan may not be the cyclone you may have expected it to be but it definitely has its thundering moments.

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari review: This Manoj Bajpayee, Diljit Dosanjh and Fatima Sana Shaikh-starrer doesn’t employ your brains too much but leaves largely satisfied

Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari is surely heads and shoulders above most. Dedicated to Mumbai, this film’s set in the ‘90s when the city was in the cusp of being renamed from erstwhile Bombay.

 Set in Delhi’s nerve ends, ​Ginny Weds Sunny's eponymous Sunny Sethi (Vikrant Massey) has dual dreams which aren’t mutually exclusive: get hitched and acquire his dad’s hardware store which he hopes to convert into Tilak Nagar Tandoori Nights, an establishment that he hopes to helm one day. But when none of his relationships crystalise, he’s compelled to take up a unique offer: his childhood crush Ginny Juneja (Yami Gautam) has a matchmaker mum (Ayesha Raza) who offers to help out.

Khaali Peeli movie review: This Ishaan Khatter, Ananya Panday-starrer seems like an inadvertent parody of 90s Hindi movies

 Director Maqbool Khan assembles Khaali Peeli with jumpy flashback sequences hoping to serve some sizzle into the proceedings. But lack of dramatic turns or twists ensures the story drives through to the climax without a spark of surprise.

Serious Men review: This Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer drives a strong argument against ambitious parents who have unreasonable expectations from their wards

 Based on journalist and writer Manu Joseph’s eponymous first novel, this one is a bittersweet watch. Laced in an acid-tongued narrative, the film delves into the life of a morally ambiguous man who hopes to propel his child with supposedly exceptional abilities to deliver on his potential.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare movie review: This Konkona Sen Sharma, Bhumi Pednekar-starrer narrates stories of marital discord, unsatiated urges and claiming one’s sexuality

 Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare dares to delve into the bedroom banter that hardly makes it to mainstream movies. A husband who pins his inability to pleasure his partner on her compromised sex drive. A child struggles to keep up with his gender-assigned role. A married woman who heads off on awkward excursions with an acquaintance to tick off all that she’s possibly denied herself. But this story is also synonymous with the aspirations and dreams of those who populate emerging new cities.

Sadak 2 review: This Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Adiya Roy Kapur-starrer has dated storytelling tropes, jaded dialogue and an indulgent story

 This film opens to a bizarre cult congregation engaged in an open-air ritual of sorts. A cloaked woman tosses her necklace into the fire pit around which a group of similarly dodgy figures have assembled. Suddenly, a hooded figure emerges from the woods to set one of the props on fire before slipping out, while the assembly breaks out in a willy-nilly manner.

Class of 83 review: This Bobby Deol-starrer lacks the devastating jolts essential in a story about Mumbai Police’s encounter squad

 “Loosely inspired” from Hussain Zaidi’s The Class of 83: The Punishers of Mumbai Police, this could’ve been a taut, edge-of-the-seat thriller. But what you make of Zaidi’s material will ensure whether you get a Black Friday or a Shootout at Wadala or even a Phantom. It’s often in the interpretation of the filmmaker that makes the writing shine or conversely, stink on the big screen.

Khuda Haafiz movie review: This Vidyut Jamwal-starrer packs some mindless, blood-spilling action

 It’s rare that a thriller has you in splits. But Faruk Kabir’s Khuda Haafiz is one of those inadvertent comedies that cracks you up even while the film’s hero incapacitates his assailants on screen. It’s also a dark tale of deceit and redemption that packs some blood-spilling action. In fact, the jabbing and stabbing here go beyond knives to include other kitchen cutlery which is stuck into jugulars and everywhere else, resulting in additional blood squirting. But when you willfully sign up for a Vidyut Jamwal film, you’re prepared for pain, mutually endured by the characters on screen and the audience.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl movie review: This Janhvi Kapoor starrer makes for an essential watch for reasons that go beyond story or its telling

 A biopic on India’s first female Shaurya Chakra recipient, Kargil war veteran and Indian Air Force officer, would naturally be a story of incredible valour. But this one also carves a fine portrait of a girl coming into her own, who’s sometimes fearful of the unknown, and yet doesn’t buckle under the unreasonable gender-based discrimination prevalent in the armed forces.

Pareeksha movie review: This Prakash Jha directorial is an assortment of cliches strung together for maximum effect

 In Prakash Jha's directorial Pareeksha, man from an impoverished background struggles and strives to provide a decent education for his offspring, hoping that it would help him emerge from his trying circumstances and assemble a life worth living. From the dialogue to the overall treatment, it’s all too contrived and desperate, hardly managing to draw any empathy.

Lootcase movie review: This Kunal Kemmu Rasika Dugal-starrer scores for its refreshingly moody dialogue

 In Lootcase, when a cop learns that the witness will be able to identify the perpetrator, he says, “We’ll need a sketch.” To this, the witness responds, “I’m terrible at drawing.” It’s these bits and bobs of whimsical humour that elevate Lootcase from the run-of-the-mill comedy of errors.
