Master Movie Review: Many strengths, and yet, not a consistently captivating experience

It’s a tricky thing, a poisoned chalice if you will, isn’t it—this joining hands with a star? It rewards you with wider exposure and a bigger budget to make the film in your head, but are you truly free to make it as you envisioned? More importantly, can the unavoidable need to play up the star in regular intervals even allow for purity of vision in the first place? It must be pretty hard to tell a genuinely authentic story when you are tasked with injecting star essence into the veins of fans once every few minutes and make the story progress only while the fleeting high lasts. The first warning that this is likely to happen throughout Master is how long the film teases you with the introduction of JD, as his footwear remains in focus, encouraging you to pay obeisance. To be fair to director Lokesh Kanagaraj though, he does seem to have put in a shift to try and offer creative doses of Vijay intoxication in this film. If JD (Vijay) is running into trains and fighting in buses during his opening stunt sequence, the justification is that it’s a pressing situation with two criminals seeking a swift getaway. If JD is playing kabaddi to the strains of Ghilli ’s ‘ Kabaddi Kabaddi ’, the justification is that the sport is the only reasonable way through which the master can get rough with some of the unruly inmates of the juvenile detention centre. And yet, these arguments, while attempts to root the star-pandering into a story, do not always hold muster. The biggest giveaway is when Bhavani (Vijay Sethupathi) breaks character to share acknowledgment of the ‘I’m waiting’ pre-interval line that’s become pretty much routine now in Vijay films. More damning evidence comes in that rather underwhelming, overlong faceoff at the end, as, like many an actor-predecessor yearning for applause, Vijay rips off his shirt. Again, many of these star events in Master are cleverer than in your average mass film and do cause adrenaline surges—but the question is, what do they come at the expense of, especially in a film from one of our most promising filmmakers?

In such films that show cognizance of the star at their centre, the protagonist’s skills need no justification. Hence, JD is already quite the expert in several sports and games (kabaddi, carroms, football…), and an ace in combat as well, including hand-to-hand, handling of weapons like baseball bats, and even archery (a joke works well, but the actual stunt sequence doesn’t). It’s the antagonist that needs justification, so he can rise to become an equal, even if it’s played by Vijay Sethupathi. These form some of the most enjoyable portions in Master , which begins so promisingly with an origins story for Bhavani. There’s even an almost mythical story behind the powerful punch he can pack with his right hand ( Kill Bill , anyone?). It’s an idea that wonderfully suits Vijay Sethupathi’s build and plays right into his apparent lack of agility. Across the film, the only weapon that matches up to his right hand is JD’s metal bracelet (vibranium?)—whose importance Lokesh painstakingly builds up over several scenes, with minor characters borrowing it to attain strength. I enjoyed these touches.

Master is mounted on the appeal of its two main characters, JD and Bhavani, and that’s why the film is constantly intercutting between developments in their respective lives, as their trajectories hurtle towards each other—even if not as methodically as, say, in a Thani Oruvan . All the waiting around for these characters to finally meet necessitates a colossal showdown, not just the rather formulaic sequence that we instead get. This is a pity, because with almost every other stunt sequence in this film, there is evidence of inventiveness in thought and execution. One happens amid a student riot, another on a kabaddi field, and yet another—my most favourite of the lot—inside a police station, as Anirudh’s guitar riffs seem to channel the power of the mythical lightning that brightens up the setting of the first conversation between JD and Bhavani.

In a film that has a ‘Thalapathy’ and a ‘Makkal Selvan’, composer Anirudh’s is a heroic musical presence, and the source of much energy and entertainment. Quite in keeping with the composer’s style, it’s rock-heavy but that’s not all. Notice the retro beats as JD is resting in an auto. Notice the explosion of ‘ thara local ’ beats in Vaathi Coming that heralds the awakening of a star without the help of lyrics. Notice the Caribbean twist in a track that turns out to be JD’s ringtone. Above all, notice the wonderful ways in which he teases the arrival of the Master theme track, and notice how it is repeatedly utilised to cause adrenaline surges, especially in that interval block. Also, in that sequence, what a wonderful idea to use JD stepping out of prison as a metaphor for his finally being able to break out of his shackles of indifference, out of his alcohol-induced stupor.

As for how the songs are used in the film, I have to say that by and large, they feel like flab. ‘ Andha Kanna Paathakaa ’ is the detour of a woman so charmed by our hero, while ‘ Polakattum Para Para ’ doesn’t exactly serve us any new information about Bhavani. The song that caused me the most discomfort is ‘ Kutty Story ’, coming as it does during a particularly delicate period in the film. It’s a time when you are wondering how this strange, new master is going to adapt to his new environment, how he is planning to win over the aggressive juvenile criminals that are his new students, and all you get is a man who struts around, throwing generic English advice. The kids are all shown to buy it, but I didn’t, not for a minute.

While on songs, Lokesh has shown a taste for reusing old songs to enterprising effect in his previous two films, and in Master too, he continues this habit, even if it doesn’t result in as many highs. There’s the Ghilli song in that now-popular kabaddi sequence from the film. ‘ Adho Andha Paravai Pola ’ plays to a victorious girl walking towards danger, armed with JD’s legendary bracelet. ‘ Vandha Naal Mudhal ’ plays as JD, much like Sivaji Ganesan in the song, nonchalantly rides a bicycle. In more Lokesh style, during a tense situation, ‘ Karutha Machaan ’ blares, first through a speaker in a salon, and later, through a mobile phone. Two more old songs are sung by JD and Bhavani respectively, during their final face-off, both of which fell spectacularly flat for me. There are also all the nods to Vijay’s films. The kabaddi sequence is Ghilli , the involuntary twitching of his body to music is Velayudham , that pre-interval dialogue is, of course, Thuppakki and Kaththi , and the chewing gum popping, as everyone knows by now, is Theri , and later films. The most enjoyable references to old cinema in this film come in the form of fabricated stories JD tells people about himself. He references several films, including 7G Rainbow Colony , Vaaranam Aayiram , Mouna Raagam , and even allows himself a cheeky dig at Kadhal Kottai .

The whole film could be imagined as a sequel to Nammavar (1994), to which there’s an acknowledgment in the end credits (note that Lokesh’s Kaithi is acknowledged to bear the influences of Virumandi ). In Master , there’s even the character of a male student reformed likely by JD in the past. I enjoyed that JD doesn’t indulge in old stories about himself and shows much awareness of the impact they could have… on Vijay’s fans (it’s pretty much Lokesh showing awareness of the responsibility of handling a star). JD takes recourse in humour as a means to avoid launching into a flashback. Much like in the two other Lokesh films, here too, there’s plenty of humour: my favourite jokes, of the dark variety, are in the Bhavani portions. Be it when he auctions a man’s life in the beginning or later, shows great frugality (picking up a chicken piece, saving up a video camera…), Vijay Sethupathi shows a real taste for such humour, and does it in a way that doesn’t come at the cost of his character’s potency.

When Master begins with a story not about JD, but about Bhavani, you could be forgiven for wondering if perhaps, just perhaps, Lokesh might have managed to hold his own against the rampaging stardom of Vijay. As Master winds up though and Bhavani feels only like star fodder, it feels like somewhere along the way, the film faltered in maintaining the difficult balance of telling an authentic story whilst consistently delivering star-drawn highs. In this film that makes pertinent points about underage drug and alcohol abuse, there’s a sharp dialogue that states that the first troublesome act of a juvenile is usually one done in emotion. It goes to explain that they then lose their way, after becoming prey to addiction, and further warns against the dangerous charms of intoxication. On some level, these insightful lines of advice felt almost like a commentary on the dangers posed by star worship and its charms to authentic storytelling. Mind you, as a young director tasked with handling a star like Vijay, Lokesh has still managed to do a fair job with Master , but if we were to remember that he is among our most promising filmmakers, well, this third film feels rather unremarkable, and surely, we must hold him to higher standards?

Harsha Chemudu, known for his comic roles, transitions to a leading hero role in “Sundaram Master.” The actor portrays the central character in the movie, set in a fictional village called Miryala Metta, located near Paderu in Andhra Pradesh. The village is located within a tribal agency that, as depicted in the film, has been isolated from the rest of India since the 1930s or 1940s.

The villagers remained isolated in their own territory, refraining from venturing beyond their hill region or engaging with the outside world. The villagers, who acquired the English language during the British colonial rule, are requesting the local government to provide a teacher to help them learn writing skills. Therefore, our protagonist Sundaram, portrayed by Harsha Chemudu, enters the scene.

Sundaram, a government teacher, agrees to go to this remote tribal village after the local MLA assigned him “unofficial” tasks with the expectation of receiving a promotion to District Education Officer (DEO). He believes that becoming the DEO will result in receiving a bigger dowry. The MLA (Harsha Vardhan) suspects that villagers are safeguarding a valuable item from outsiders and tasks Sundaram with investigating under the guise of teaching the villagers writing.

Thus, the story and drama begin. In the village, Sundaram encounters women who consider him as the most handsome because his dark complexion. The villagers, who hate white men as the British did atrocities on their ancestors, have affinity to dark-skinned people. We get some comedy sequences like these kind of situations with Harsha encountering strange ways of these villagers.

Some of these comedy scenes are reminiscent of the old Hollywood film “Gods Must Be Crazy.” Some scenes, particularly the way the villagers spell certain English words, are quite hilarious. The initial setup and the sequences are fairly entertaining and engaging. But as the proceedings progress, the overall situation appears pretentious and monotonous.

Furthermore, the story lacks logic.

Harsha Chemudu, in his first lead role, does neatly. He understands his role well and manages to keep us interested for the most part. His performance is also convincing. Divya Sripada gets an underwritten role.

The technicians have done what is required. The new director uses this story to demonstrate that tribal people are more in tune with nature and teach us more than we do them. The intention is good, but his narrative abilities are limited.

Bottom line: Despite its good intentions and a few amusing moments, “Sundaram Master” quickly loses steam and becomes superficial.

Sundaram Master Review - Viva Harsha is the only solace in this slow-paced coming-of-age social drama

Sundaram Master Story

Sundar Rao (Viva Harsha) is posted as a school teacher in the remote area of Miryalamitta. The people living in that village have never come out of that area and stick to their own beliefs. But they do not know that Sundara Rao has come to their village for a secret mission. What is that mission? What is Sundar Rao's plan? How did he deal with the villagers? To know the answers, watch the film on the big screen.

Sundaram Master is written and directed by Kalyan Santhosh. The film deals with a school teacher trying to cheat a village to get something precious out of them. This aspect could have been narrated like a comedy thriller but director Kalyan chooses to narrate Sundaram Master like a coming-of-age drama. The first half showcases the fun side of the story, whereas the second half is all about self-realisation.

What catches your attention is the basic backdrop of the film. It is relatable and set in a fun tone. The comedy related to the villagers is decent but there was a lot of scope for the director to squeeze more fun from the proceedings. As the main lead, Viva Harsha became famous by paying a teacher in his YouTube videos. The director could have added so many comedy scenes related to him teaching the uneducated villagers and created comedy out of it.

But that does not happen, as the film's aim is something else altogether. However, there are a few scenes that have been handled quite well. The way the villagers talk in fluent English and the backstory related to their existence are solidly showcased. The fun created through Harsha's character is also nice to see on screen.

But the narrative tries to cash in on different aspects. It showcases the self-realisation of the hero but for him to undergo all this, the backstory and the conflict need to be strong from the beginning. That does not happen one bit, as one emotional scene changes the face of the film.

The second half is the biggest drawback for Sundaram Master. It is slow, lacks depth, and the climax is hurried for no reason. There was so much showcase to narrate the film as a thriller, as a missing idol is involved in the story. The reference to Yuvraj Singh's Six Sixes story is nicely woven into the film but it does not create an impact.

The villagers who played key roles do not create an impact, as everyone looks pale and weak. Divya Sripada, who plays the female lead, has the worst role. Her character does not bring any depth to the film. Despite being a good actress, Divya does not add any value to the film. The same is the case with Harshvardhan. The villain's track is dull and lacks depth.

Viva Harsha is the only solace in the film and gives an endearing performance. This is his first film as the main lead and he carries the film on his shoulders. He was effective in the self-realisation scenes and did well in the comedy scenes. Balakrishna, who plays the village head, was decent in his role.

The music by Sricharan Pakala is pretty impressive, as is his background score. The camerawork is amazing, as the forest visuals are showcased nicely. The editing in the second half could have been better. But the screenplay is a drawback. It is not racy and does not hold you in your seats.

One of the biggest assets of the film is the awesome production design. The village set in the forest is superb and gives the film a superb look. Sundaram Master is a very good script on paper but is spoiled by some dull and lacklustre narration. Only a few scenes impress but the rest of the narrative is boring.

Sundaram Master Verdict

On the whole, Sundaram Master has a pretty good storyline that could have been narrated with a lot of fun and thrill. But the makers chose otherwise and narrated it as a coming-of-age drama that is marred by inexperienced narration and ends as a below-average fare this weekend.

‘Sundaram Master’ movie review: Can we shed our baggage and go back to basics?  

Through an indie-style telugu film headlined by harsha chemudu, director kalyan santhosh attempts to show that life can be simple when stripped of greed and selfishness.

Baruvu thagginchu (reduce your weight), an elderly man tells Sundaram ( Harsha Chemudu ), who enters the remote village of Miriyalametta that has not seen an outsider in about 90 years. The casting of Harsha as Sundaram master is spot on for director Kalyan Krishna’s indie-style Telugu film, Sundaram Master , produced by actor Ravi Teja . Actors like Harsha are often subject to body shaming in narratives that are not sensitive or politically correct. This film turns the physical attributes of weight and skin colour on its head to narrate a heart-warming, fable-like story. Not everything about Sundaram Master hits the sweet spot. Some stretches call for some patient viewing but towards the end, the director ties up the different threads beautifully and hopes we leave with a smile and introspect about how we live.

It takes conviction to make a film like Sundaram Master , moving away from mainstream trappings. On paper, it must have looked like a story that a grandparent would narrate, with leaps of imagination, and ultimately arriving at a few lessons for life. Kalyan Santhosh dresses up such a story with some humour and a little else. Even a song ( Sricharan Pakala’s background score and the song has a tinge of magic to it) comes only towards the fag end, as though giving into the mood of Sundaram and the villagers.

Sundaram Master (Telugu)

Imagine a village that is so cut off from the outside world that its people continue to live in a way we consider primitive — they live in tune with Nature, cook and eat what the forest and its surroundings provide them, work through the day and retire to their bamboo-walled homes at dusk. A voiceover informs us that the villagers realised they were self-sufficient, but the outside world eyed their natural riches and came to plunder them, so they severed connections so that no outsider would reach them.

Sundaram is a social studies teacher in a government school who is deputed to this remote village since the villagers requested for an English teacher. A calculative MLA (Harshavardhan) sees this as an opportunity to make political and financial gains and sends Sundaram with a plan. Sundaram is no saint either. Early on, we see him crudely discussing dowry at a pelli choopulu . Everything boils down to money for him. What happens when he sets off into Miriyalametta with his own assumptions of the gullible people forms the rest of the story.

Kalyan Santhosh pulls a few fun tricks out of his bag in the initial hour. The spelling error in the disclaimer at the beginning of the film, stating that the film bears (spelt as ‘bare’) no resemblance to real person, is a hint of things to come. It turns out that the spoken English of the villagers is impeccable since they learnt it during the colonial era but their spellings are all over the place. Plenty of laugh-aloud (or ‘laff’, as the villagers insist) follow. Come to think of it, the way they look at English spellings is through a lens of simplicity (what is a ‘c’ doing in black?).

All this humour is a cloak to what the film intends to convey. Once the jokes dry up and the narrative takes a serious idealistic tone, it calls for patient viewing. The film acquires a docu-drama-like tone when it tries to address issues related to the environment (cinematographer Deepak Yaragera’s visuals capture the beauty of the forests with a matter-of-fact approach rather than romanticise it), how we attach value to the rupee note and gold versus what the villagers hold in great value. The story also looks at life and death, and presents an idealistic notion of the final journey bereft of ritualistic norms. These are all well-intended segments but occasionally it gets preachy.

Just when you begin to wonder where the film is headed, it gets its act together towards the final stretch. In the pre-climax portion, we, the audience, are similar to Sundaram, watching the villagers get all emotional watching something on a makeshift screen. Sundaram is perplexed, then amused and finally gives into the emotional outpourings and realises that his transformative journey is complete. He realises what shedding weight actually stands for and there is also an explanation as to why the villagers prefer dark-skinned people and look at fair skin with distrust.

Making the transition from a comedy and supporting actor to the main lead, Harsha is effective as Sundaram, portraying the conniving nature and the transformation with sincerity. He keeps us invested in the film through some of its wobbly portions. Divya Sripada’s role could have been fleshed out better but the actor makes it worthwhile and gives it more depth. Chaitanya as Oja also makes an impression, along with several others cast as village folks, including Balakrishna Neelakantapuram as the village head.

Kalyan Santhosh also tips his hat to his favourite icons — from Mahatma Gandhi and Brahmanandam to cricketer Yuvraj Singh through different threads of the story.

Sundaram Master is not perfect but it is an earnest indie film that makes a plea to live a little more consciously.

మిర్యాలమెట్ట అనే ఓ చిన్న కుగ్రామంకి ఇంగ్లీష్ సబ్జెక్టు చెప్పేందుకు సుందర్ రావు(హర్ష చెముడు) ఓ సీక్రెట్ మిషన్ తో వెళ్తాడు. మరి ఆ గ్రామంలో ప్రజలతో తాను ఎలా సెట్ అయ్యాడు? తాను వెళ్లిన మిషన్ ఏంటి? దాన్ని అతను సాధించాడా లేదా చివరికి ఏమయ్యింది అనేది తెలియాలి అంటే ఈ చిత్రాన్ని చూడాల్సిందే.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ :

యువ నటుడు హర్ష ఎలాంటి నటుడు అనేది తెలుసు. అయితే ఓ ఫుల్ లెంగ్త్ రోల్ లో తాను ఈ చిత్రంలో కనిపించాడు. మరి తాను ఈ మొదటి సినిమాలో మరింత పరిణితి తన నటనలో కనబరిచాడు అనిక్ చెప్పాలి. అలాగే తనపై కనిపించే పలు కామెడీ సీన్స్ అయితే మంచి హిలేరియస్ గా కూడా కనిపిస్తాయి. వాటిలో తన ఈజ్ నటన కానీ టైమింగ్ కానీ ఇంప్రెస్ చేస్తాయి.

అలాగే గ్రామస్తులతో కనిపించే కొన్ని కామెడీ సీన్స్ వారి అమాయకత్వం, ఎమోషన్స్ తో చాలా నీట్ గా కనిపిస్తాయి. అలాగే సెకండాఫ్ లో కొన్ని సీన్స్ బాగున్నాయి. ఇక వీటితో పాటుగా బాలకృష్ణ నీలకంఠపు తదితర ముఖ్య తారాగణం తమ పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు సహజమైన పెర్ఫామెన్స్ ని అందించే ప్రయత్నం చేశారు.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ :

ఈ చిత్రంలో కథ చాలా సింపుల్ గానే ఉంటుంది కానీ ఈ కథని ఇంకా ఆసక్తిగా మలిచే ప్రయత్నం ఈ సినిమాలో మిస్ అయ్యింది మెయిన్ గా సెకండాఫ్ లో మరింత ఆసక్తి రేకెత్తించి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. అలాగే చాలా ఒక రూరల్ బ్యాక్ డ్రాప్ లో మరింత కామెడీ అండ్ ఎమోషన్స్ తో కూడిన బ్యూటిఫుల్ ట్రీట్ ని కూడా ఆశించి ఉంటారు. కానీ ఈ సినిమా పట్ల వారికి నిరాశ తప్పదు.

అలాగే ఫస్టాఫ్ లో కనిపించిన కామెడీ నరేషన్ సెకండాఫ్ లో డల్ అయ్యిపోతుంది. దీనితో బ్యాలన్స్ మిస్ అయ్యినట్టుగా అనిపిస్తుంది. అలాగే దివ్య శ్రీపాద, హర్ష వర్ధన్ లాంటి నటులు ఉన్నప్పటికీ కూడా వారిపై సన్నివేశాలు కొన్ని అంత ఎఫెక్టీవ్ గా ఉండవు. అలాగే స్లో నరేషన్ కాస్త సహనాన్ని పరీక్షిస్తుంది.

ఇక ఫైనల్ గా క్లైమాక్స్ పోర్షన్ కోసం మాట్లాడినట్టయితే హర్ష చెముడు మరియు హర్ష వర్ధన్ ల నడుమ కనిపించే సీక్వెన్స్ అంత కన్విన్స్డ్ గా అనిపించదు. దీనితో ఇదీ ఒకింత నిరాశ కలిగిస్తుంది.

సాంకేతిక వర్గం :

ఈ చిత్రంలో నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి. విలేజ్ సెటప్ అంతా నాచురల్ గా కనిపిస్తుంది. అలాగే సంగీతం, సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ, ఆర్ట్ వర్క్ అంతా నాచురల్ గా కనిపిస్తాయి. అలాగే ఎడిటింగ్ పర్వాలేదు.

ఇక దర్శకుడు కళ్యాణ్ సంతోష్ విషయానికి వస్తే.. తాను సింపుల్ లైన్ నే ఎంచుకున్నప్పటికీ దానిని ఇంకా ఎంగేజింగ్ గా మలిచే ప్రయత్నం చేసి ఉండాల్సింది. మెయిన్ గా ఫస్టాఫ్ లో కొనసాగించిన హిలేరియస్ నరేషన్ సెకండాఫ్ లో కూడా మైంటైన్ చేసి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. అలాగే క్లైమాక్స్ ఎపిసోడ్ కూడా ఇంకాస్త బెటర్ గా డిజైన్ చేయాల్సింది.

ఇక మొత్తంగా చూసినట్టు అయితే ఈ “సుందరం మాస్టర్” క్లాసెస్ ఒకింత కామెడీగా ఉన్నప్పటికీ ఫుల్ గా ఎంజాయ్ చేసే రేంజ్ లో అయితే లేవని చెప్పాలి. స్లో గా సాగే నరేషన్ కొంచెం బోరింగ్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే వంటివి ఫలితాన్ని డీవియేట్ చేసాయి. అలాగే మంచి ఎమోషన్స్ కూడా మిస్ అయ్యాయి. వీటితో అయితే ఈ చిత్రం పూర్తి స్థాయిలో ఆకట్టుకోదు.

Harsha Chemudu who shot to fame with the Viva video on YouTube entered films as a comedian. He evolved into the main lead with Sundaram Master which was released today in theaters. Produced by actor Raviteja, Harsha Chemudu acted as a teacher who visits a remote place. Let us see if Sundaram Master achieves what he wants. Here is the review from the US Premieres.

What Is It About?

The tribal people of Miryalametta who never allow anyone to enter their village ask the government for an English teacher. The MLA (Harshavardhan) hears that there is a highly valuable thing in the tribal village and sends Sundaram Master (Harsha Chemudu) to the village. Did Sundaram master really go there to teach English? What did he find in the village? Sundaram Master answers these questions.

Performances

Harsha Chemudu has acted in many sidekick and comedian roles recently and tried in the lead role for the first time. Though comedy is his prime asset, none of the comedy scenes worked. Divya Sripada and others did what was needed in their respective roles.

Technicalities

Sundaram Master has a message that was told many a time. In fact, Sundaram Master could not strongly convey the message it intended to. The village, dialogues, and English comedy did not help in bringing it all together for a proper conclusion. Though the director’s idea to emphasize a point could be understood, it is lost in the narrative. The background music is just fine. A few visuals and a very few dialogues are good.

Second Half Climax Lack of Emotional Depth

Sundaram Master is a story of a greedy teacher who is sent to a tribal place to teach them English, but he becomes a student when they start teaching him life lessons. However, Sundaram Master’s message is lost in execution, even with good grammar.

The first half of Sundaram Master has a few comedy scenes that hardly worked. The spelling comedy and the teaching lessons appeared like slapstick humor after a few scenes. The second half lacks that comedy also and goes more into the preaching and philosophy mode. The episodes that try to enlighten Sundaram Master appear forced. The transformation of Sundaram lacked that strong conviction. There are a few good dialogues here and there. The tribal people living in the pre-independence era connecting to the emotion of cricket is an exaggerated episode.

The setup of a small tribal village is not very convincing. The villagers who are stubborn in a few aspects give up on other things so easily. Though the English-speaking concept appears to be the main point in the film, it gets sidelined conveniently for the message. The purpose of bringing Sundaram Master to the village is not served and neither the closure is convincing. The narrative goes awry many a time with dragged episodes and English-speaking characters.

Many movies like Gamyam and Vedam show how a man can change with the circumstances and people around him. Sundaram Master also revolves around that concept, but the narrative loses its originality due to a lack of proper establishment of characters and bonding between them, and depth in the scenes among others. Overall, Sundaram Master and the villagers pass only the English test, but not in conveying the social message they intended to.

Bottomline: Extremely Boring Class

అ గ్ర క‌థానాయ‌కుడిగా వరుస సినిమాల‌తో బిజీగా ఉంటూనే.. త‌న నిర్మాణ సంస్థ ఆర్‌.టి.టీమ్ వ‌ర్క్స్ ప‌తాకంపై కొత్త‌త‌రాన్ని ప‌రిచ‌యం చేస్తూ చిత్ర  నిర్మాణం కొన‌సాగిస్తున్నారు రవితేజ.  ఆయ‌న సంస్థ నుంచి వ‌స్తున్న మ‌రో చిత్ర‌మే... ‘సుంద‌రం మాస్ట‌ర్‌’. హాస్య న‌టుడిగా ప్రేక్ష‌కుల‌కు సుప‌రిచితమైన హ‌ర్ష చెముడు కీలక పాత్రలో న‌టించారు.  క‌ల్యాణ్ సంతోష్ ద‌ర్శ‌కుడిగా ప‌రిచ‌యమవుతున్నారు. న‌వ్వులు పంచ‌డంలో త‌న‌కంటూ ఓ ప్ర‌త్య‌క‌మైన శైలి ఉన్న హ‌ర్ష ఎలాంటి ప్ర‌తిభ చూపించారు?(Sundaram Master Review) ఈ చిత్రం ఎలా ఉంది?

క‌థేంటంటే: సుంద‌రం మాస్ట‌ర్ (వైవా హ‌ర్ష‌) గ‌వ‌ర్న‌మెంట్ స్కూల్‌లో టీచ‌ర్‌. ఎక్కువ క‌ట్నం ఇచ్చే సంబంధాన్ని చూసి పెళ్లి చేసుకునే ప్ర‌య‌త్నాల్లో  ఉంటాడు. ఇంత‌లో ఆ ప్రాంత ఎమ్మెల్యే (హ‌ర్ష‌వ‌ర్ధ‌న్‌)కి  మిర్యాల మెట్ట నుంచి ఓ ఉత్త‌రం అందుతుంది. వాళ్ల‌కి ఇంగ్లిష్ టీచ‌ర్ కావాల‌నేది దాని సారాంశం. బ‌య‌ట ప్ర‌పంచంతో సంబంధం లేని ఆ ఊరికి వెళ్లి ఇంగ్లిష్ పాఠాలు చెప్పే బాధ్య‌త‌ని తీసుకుంటాడు సుంద‌రం మాస్ట‌ర్‌. బ‌య‌టివాళ్లకి ఎవ్వ‌రికీ ప్ర‌వేశం లేని ఆ ఊళ్లో విలువైన వ‌స్తువు ఏదో ఉందనీ, దాన్ని క‌నిపెట్టే బాధ్య‌త‌ని కూడా సుంద‌రం మాస్ట‌ర్‌కి అప్ప‌జెబుతారు. అది క‌నిపెడితే  డీఈఓ పోస్ట్ కూడా ఇస్తాన‌ని చెబుతాడు ఎమ్మెల్యే. డీఈఓ అయితే ఇంకా ఎక్కువ క‌ట్నం వ‌స్తుంద‌నే ఆశ‌తో ఆ ఊరికి బ‌య‌ల్దేర‌తాడు సుంద‌రం. తీరా అక్క‌డికెళితే  ఊళ్లో అంద‌రూ మాస్టార్ కంటే బాగా ఇంగ్లిష్‌లో మాట్లాడతారు. ‘అస‌లు నీకే ఇంగ్లిష్ రాదం’టూ మాస్టార్‌కే ప‌రీక్ష పెడ‌తారు. ఆ ప‌రీక్ష‌లో ఫెయిల్ అయితే ఉరేస్తాం అని హెచ్చ‌రిస్తారు. మ‌రి ఆ ప‌రీక్ష‌లో సుంద‌రం మాస్టార్ పాస‌య్యాడా?ఇంగ్లిష్ అంత బాగా మాట్లాడుతున్నా వాళ్లు ఇంగ్లిష్ మాస్ట‌ర్ కావాల‌నుకోవ‌డానికి కార‌ణ‌మేమిటి? ఊళ్లో విలువైన వ‌స్తువుని సుంద‌రం క‌నిపెట్టాడా? అత‌ను ఊరి నుంచి బ‌య‌ట‌ప‌డ్డాడా? ఇంత‌కీ ఆ ఊరి వెన‌కున్న చ‌రిత్ర ఏమిటి? త‌దిత‌ర విష‌యాలు తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే.

ఎలా ఉందంటే: బ‌య‌ట ప్ర‌పంచంతో  సంబంధం లేని కొన్ని ప్రాంతాల గురించి అప్పుడ‌ప్పుడూ వింటూ ఉంటాం. అక్క‌డి మ‌నుషుల్లోని స్వ‌చ్ఛ‌త‌, అమాయ‌క‌త్వం, క‌ట్టుబాట్లు, అలాంటి ప్రాంతాల చ‌రిత్ర వినేకొద్దీ ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తిస్తుంటాయి.  అలాంటి నేప‌థ్యంలో సాగే చిత్ర‌మే ఇది. ప్ర‌ధాన పాత్ర‌ధారి వైవా హ‌ర్ష ఇమేజ్‌ని దృష్టిలోఉంచుకుని పూర్తిస్థాయి హాస్య‌భ‌రిత చిత్రం అనే అంచ‌నాల‌తో వెళితే ప్రేక్ష‌కుడికి నిరాశ త‌ప్ప‌దు. హాస్యం ఉంటుంది కానీ, సినిమా మొత్తం అదే ఉండ‌దు. మిర్యాలమెట్ట అనే ఓ ప్ర‌త్యేక‌మైన ప్ర‌పంచంలోకి ప్రేక్ష‌కుల్ని తీసుకెళ్లి ప్ర‌కృతి, మాన‌వ‌త్వాన్ని మేళ‌వించి ఓ మంచి విష‌యాన్ని చెప్పే ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశాడు. క‌థ చెప్పే క్ర‌మంలో అక్క‌డ‌క్క‌డా త‌డ‌బాటు క‌నిపించినా ఓ కొత్త ర‌క‌మైన చిత్రం చూసిన అనుభూతిని మాత్రం పంచాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. సుంద‌రం మాస్టార్ పాత్ర‌ని ప‌రిచయం చేయ‌డం మొద‌లుకొని అత‌ను మిరియాల మెట్ట‌కి వెళ్లి ఇంగ్లిష్ నేర్పించే ప్ర‌య‌త్నంలో ఎదుర్కొనే ఇబ్బందులు, అక్క‌డి జ‌నాలు అల‌వాట్లు, ఆచారాలతో ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధం స‌ర‌దా సర‌దాగా సాగిపోతుంది. అర‌గంట పాటు  వైవా హ‌ర్ష మార్క్  కామెడీ స‌న్నివేశాల‌తో సినిమా సంద‌డిగా సాగుతుంది. ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఊరి చ‌రిత్ర ఆస‌క్తిని రేకెత్తిస్తుంది.

ద్వితీయార్ధం మొత్తం విలువైన వ‌స్తువు కోసం సాగించే అన్వేష‌ణ చుట్టూనే క‌థ న‌డుస్తుంది. ప్ర‌కృతి, మాన‌వ‌త్వం నేప‌థ్యంలో తాత్విక‌త‌తో కూడిన స‌న్నివేశాలు ఆక‌ట్టుకున్నా, గంద‌ర‌గోళంగా అనిపించే కొంత‌భాగం ఇబ్బంది పెడ‌తాయి. ఓ మంచి సందేశం ఉన్న చిత్ర‌మిది. మిర్యాల మెట్ట ప్ర‌పంచాన్ని తెర‌పై ఆవిష్క‌రించిన తీరే ఈ సినిమాకి ప్ర‌ధాన ఆక‌ర్ష‌ణ‌. ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: త‌న‌కి త‌గ్గ పాత్ర‌లోనే క‌నిపించాడు వైవా హ‌ర్ష‌. సుంద‌రం మాస్ట‌ర్ పాత్ర‌లో ఒదిగిపోయాడు. ప్ర‌థ‌మార్ధంలో త‌న‌కి అల‌వాటైన న‌ట‌న‌తో న‌వ్వించాడు. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో అసలు క‌థ‌ని చెప్పే క్ర‌మంలో ఆయ‌న‌కి  హాస్యం పండించే అవ‌కాశం ద‌క్క‌లేదు.   హాస్యంతోపాటు, ఇత‌ర  భావోద్వేగాల్ని పండించే అవ‌కాశం కూడా ఆయ‌న‌కి ద‌క్కింది. దివ్య శ్రీపాద  మిర్యాల మెట్ట‌లోని ఓ అనాథ అమ్మాయిగా క‌నిపిస్తుంది.  ఆమె క‌నిపించిన విధానం, అభిన‌యం ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది.  ఓజా పాత్ర‌లో చైత‌న్య‌,  ఆ ఊరి గ్యాంగ్ న‌ట‌న మ‌రింత‌గా ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. బాల‌కృష్ణ‌, హ‌ర్ష‌వ‌ర్ధ‌న్‌, భ‌ద్రం త‌దిత‌రులు పాత్ర‌ల ప‌రిధి మేర‌కు మంచి అభిన‌యం ప్ర‌ద‌ర్శించారు. యువ‌రాజ్ సింగ్‌, బ్ర‌హ్మానందంల‌ని చూపిస్తూ తీర్చిదిద్దిన స‌న్నివేశాలు సినిమాకి హైలైట్‌. సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా ఉన్న‌తంగా  ఉంది. ముఖ్యంగా  క‌ళా విభాగం ప‌నితీరు హ‌త్తుకుంటుంది. నిజంగా అలాంటి ఊరు ఉందేమో అనేలా ఆ ప్ర‌పంచాన్ని సృష్టించారు క‌ళా ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు చంద్ర‌మౌళి. శ్రీచ‌ర‌ణ్ పాకాల సంగీతం చిత్రానికి మ‌రో అద‌న‌పు ఆక‌ర్ష‌ణ‌. ఎగిసే పాట‌తో మంచి భావోద్వేగాలు పండాయి.  విజువ‌ల్స్‌తో ఛాయాగ్రాహ‌కుడు దీప‌క్ క‌ట్టిప‌డేశాడు. ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు క‌ల్యాణ్ సంతోష్ నిజాయ‌తీగా ఓ మంచి ప్ర‌య‌త్నం చేశాడు. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో క‌థ‌నం కాస్త ప‌ట్టుత‌ప్పిన‌ట్టు అనిపించినా, ఆయ‌న క‌థాలోచ‌న‌, ర‌చ‌న బాగుంది.  భావోద్వేగాలు బాగా పండాయి. నిర్మాణం ఉన్న‌తంగా ఉంది.  సినిమాకి ప‌రిధులు ఉన్న‌ప్ప‌టికీ, నిర్మాణంలో నాణ్య‌త క‌నిపిస్తుంది.

Sundaram Master X Review: Harsha Chemudu's Comedy Drama Debuts On Silver Screen Worldwide; See Tweets HERE

Sundaram Master is the latest comedy-drama starring Harsha Chemudu in the lead role. The movie written and directed by Kalyan Santhosh was released amid low-key buzz on February 22 worldwide. Massraja Ravi Teja co-funded the movie under his banner.

Harsha Chemudu, popular as Viva Harsha turned a full length protagonist with this comedy film, following the suit of his friends and contemporaries like Suhas. Suhas is already several films old as a main lead and Harsha just began. Sundaram Master was filmed and the post-production works have completed a long time ago. The movie was kept in waiting for a long time for the appropriate release time. Finally, it hit the screens without competition at the box office.

Sundaram Master Synopsis

A government English teacher is transferred to a tribal village named Miryalametta. He tries to befriend the villagers and tries to teach them the language. However, he is in for a big shock after the villagers speak fluent English. He also finds out that the villagers harbor a well-kept secret.

Upon its theatrical release, Sundaram Master is getting mixed reactions from the early paid premieres. While a section of the viewers lauded the film and the attempt by the director to put across a message, there are also complaints about loose narration and several other aspects, according to the social media posts available. Sundaram Master marks the debut of Viva Harsha as the hero for the first time in his career. Ravi Teja has bankrolled this film which has Divya Sripada as the female lead. The film was released today and read our detailed review here.

Sundaram Master Story: Sundaram Master(Harsha) is a small-time government teacher who is all set to tie the knot. The MLA of his area orders him to go to the forest area of Miryalamitta and find out where a precious idol is being saved by the villagers and get a huge government position in return. Sundaram Master lands in the forest area and starts his journey as a teacher. Did he find the idol? What experience did he face with the villagers and did he cheat them? is the basic story of the film.

Performances: Sundaram Master has Viva Harsha in the lead role and he is the one who saves the day with his sincere performance. He gets a lot of scope to showcase varied emotions and Harsha does well in the film. He did well in the emotional scenes as well. The female lead, Divya Sripada has a striking screen presence but was not at all utilized properly. Harshvardhan as the cunning MLA was okay. The rest of the cast who played the villagers were not up to the mark. A few more known faces would have made things a lot better.

Technical Aspects: Sricharan Pakala has composed the music for this film and it is good. The BGM was ordinary though. The camerawork showcasing the forest visuals was great. The production design and set work laid in the forest were superb and gave the film an authentic vibe. The editing is okay but the screenplay was disappointing. There are not many scenes that hold your attention. The story is good on paper but falters in execution.

Analysis: Kalyan Santhosh has written and directed Sundaram Master, a coming-of-age drama. The backdrop of the film is pretty interesting and its aim is also good. The coming-of-age drama also looks impressive on paper. But all this is not transformed onto the screen sadly. The film starts on an interesting note and has decent comedy in the first half.

But when one thinks the film turns into an emotional thriller, the narrative forces us into the emotional transformation of the hero which does not work. Everything looks forced into the narrative and all this happens as the director fails to elevate the conflict right from the beginning of the film. The key second falters in no time and so many unnecessary scenes bore the audience.

The concept of fighting with the British showcased through the scenes of Yuvraj Singh hitting six sixes in a row is narrated in a very good manner. The film has so much scope to showcase comedy and make it a thriller, but the director Kalyan chooses it to be a coming-of-age drama.

The ending is rushed and does not sync with the narrative. Viva Harsha does well but the supporting cast is not that good. If more proper depth into certain aspects of the film had gone, the output would have been different. The director should be credited for trying something different but his experience speaks in many areas sadly.

Verdict: Overall, Sundaram Master has a few laughs here and there but is majorly aimless. It is neither funny nor thrilling and the coming-of-age drama looks half-baked and ends as a film with a missed opportunity. Viva Harsha is the only savior with his sincere performance.

Bottom Line – Viva Harsha shines

DGL, Kranthi Madhav's Comeback Film

K Kranthi Madhav is one of the most sensible directors who impressed with his first two movies Onamalu and Malli Malli Idhi Rani Roju took a break to revive himself.

The director is hoping to make a comeback with his new film which was announced officially today with two title posters.

The movie is titled intriguingly DGL, and the posters indicate the story set in Kazipet is inspired by true incidents.

While one poster shows the protagonist standing on a railway track, the other poster highlights his bonhomie with his buddies.

After Malli Malli Idhi Rani Roju, Gnana Shekhar VS will be associating with Kranth Madhav again for this new movie.

Produced by Ganta Karthik Reddy under the banner of Arthi Creative Team, the movie DGL starts rolling from November.

The film’s other cast and crew will be revealed soon.
