The course provides a supportive environment in which to enhance your creative writing technique, to explore the depths of your ideas, to sustain your creative motivation, and to prepare you for the demands of the writer’s life beyond university.

At King's we know that writing well requires self-discipline and an ability to work productively in isolation; but we also appreciate that postgraduate writers thrive when they are part of a community of fellow authors, an environment of constructive criticism and shared endeavour. We offer our PhD students the guidance of knowledgeable and experienced practitioners, as well as give them frequent opportunities to interact and collaborate with peers, to forge lasting connections within London’s writing industry, to develop their editorial skills and teaching experience.

PhD students are expected to attend the quarterly Thesis Workshop, and also to take an active part in curating literary events at King's, including an annual public lecture by a high-profile author and the "Poetry And..." quarterly reading series.

Admission to the PhD in Creative Writing at King’s is based primarily on the quality of the applicant’s creative writing sample and the viability of the project proposal. All applicants for the PhD in Creative Writing at King’s should hold a Bachelor's degree with first class honours in a related subject area or an MA or MFA in Creative Writing with a Pass. So as not to disadvantage talented applicants from non-traditional academic backgrounds, we may also admit on the basis of the demonstrable quality of an applicant’s writing sample and/or project proposal (subject to successful interview with the candidate). These candidates will be expected to possess an undergraduate qualification.

The King’s College Creative Writing Society provides a home for the university's writers, offering support, feedback, inspiration and companionship. Here are some of the things we do:

Weekly Meetings

We meet twice a week: once to share our writing for group feedback and advice (the Reading Meeting), and once to hang out and write together with prompts and games (the Writing Meeting). No matter what your level of skill in writing, everyone is welcome! Our meetings serve as a friendly, non-judgemental forum in which to develop your abilities - whether you're already an experienced novelist, or you've never written so much as a single short story, please do come along! All you need is an interest in writing, and a desire to hone it.

Our events can range from themed writing challenges to Panels with authors. The aim is to give students writing their own works the means to flex their creative muscles while also learn from those who have already crossed the path they now walk on.

Annual Anthologies

Each year we collect pieces from our members written around a specific theme, editorialise them and self-publish them. Giving any of our members the chance to become published authors.

This course is subject to approval for 2025 entry. This programme builds on our international reputation in creative writing, media and the creative industries. Your first year is shared with BA English. Throughout your degree you will study the written word across time and space, from Shakespeare to popular music, comic books to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. By the end of your studies, you will be able to communicate in different professional and critical forms, using the written and spoken word. You will also develop a set of specialised and applied skills in contemporary forms of creative writing, from short stories and literary journalism to screenplays and game dialogue. You’ll graduate with a compelling portfolio of sample writings. Immerse yourself in world literature and study in Central London, which has inspired so many iconic stories. Learn how to write in a range of genres and voices, including screenplays, poetry, short stories, narrative non-fiction and gaming narrative. Develop applied creative skills in communication, persuasion, individuality, writing for different audiences, and awareness of different creative industry markets. Learn from a team of expert lecturers who are passionate about creativity and the written word.

English Department

We have over 100 doctoral students from all over the world working on a wide range of projects. Together with our community of postdoctoral fellows, our early career researchers both organise and participate in our thriving seminar and conference culture.

The English department is home to award-winning novelists, poets, essayists, biographers, non-fiction authors, and literary critics, who supervise creative projects at doctoral level within their specialisms.

Description

Our postgraduate writing students are given a supportive environment in which to enhance their technique, to explore the depths of their ideas, to sustain their creative motivation, and to prepare them for the demands of the writer’s life beyond the College.

That is why we offer our PhD students the guidance of knowledgeable and experienced practitioners. They will have frequent opportunities to interact and collaborate with peers and forge lasting connections within London’s writing industry.

Students will be expected to attend the quarterly Thesis Workshop, and also to take an active part in curating literary events at King’s, including the Poetry And… quarterly reading series. They will be invited to apply for positions teaching undergraduate creative writing modules as part of the Department’s Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) scheme.

After three years (full-time) or six years (part-time), students are expected to submit either:

a novel or short story collection
a poetry collection
a full-length work of creative non-fiction

In addition, they are also required to submit an essay (up to 15,000 words) that examines their practical approach to the conception, development, and revision of their project, and which explores how their creative work was informed by research (archival, book-based, or experiential).

Course Study Environment

PhD in Creative Writing students are taught through one-to-one sessions with an appointed supervisor in their chosen specialism (fiction, creative non-fiction, or poetry) as well as through quarterly thesis workshops. They are also appointed a second supervisor whose role is to offer an additional perspective on the work being produced.

We place great emphasis on pastoral care and are a friendly and welcoming department in the heart of London. Our home in the Virginia Woolf Building offers many spaces for postgraduate students to work and socialise. Studying in London means students have access to a huge range of libraries from the Maughan Library at King’s to the Senate House Library at the University of London and the British Library.

Writing & publishing, writing & publishing, it’s time to tell your story.

Do you have a story to tell? The faculty and mentors in King’s Writing & Publishing program want to work with you to get that story onto the page—and onto the bookshelf. Our two unique limited-residency Master of Fine Arts programs in Creative Nonfiction and Fiction allow you to work with accomplished writers and editors to produce a book-length nonfiction or fiction manuscript, while also gaining the book publishing industry knowledge you need to successfully find a publisher and market your book.

What makes our programs unique?

You choose your focus: We offer two programs, allowing you to pursue either Creative Nonfiction or Fiction.
You choose where you live and work: Our limited-residency two-year programs are designed to suit your life. Each year, you spend nine days in Halifax for our in-person June residency. Then, each January, you complete a six-day online residency. The rest of the year is spent working remotely with your mentor and other faculty. By the end of your program, you have had two in-person residencies in Halifax, and two online January residencies (one focusing on the Canadian publishing industry, the other on the U.S. and international industry).
You learn both the craft and business of publishing: Many programs focus solely on the craft of writing. Our programs provide intensive one-to-one mentoring to build your craft skills, while also providing instruction in contracts, marketing and other business or publishing topics related directly to your book project.
You have the opportunity to meet editors, agents and other book publishing professionals based in Canada and the U.S. during your January residencies.
You work with accomplished writers and editors who are also accomplished teachers: Our program mentors and faculty are award-winning authors and editors who know the publishing world from the inside out. They are also top-notch educators, who are adept at working with students across a range of genres and subject areas.

Our graduates have an impressive track record of publishing success. They’ve been published by top Canadian, U.S. and international publishers and garnered awards and accolades in Canada and beyond.

In this module you will read and discuss fiction and non-fiction from a writer’s perspective. You will gain an understanding of the techniques, forms and styles used by a range of writers and be able to apply them to your own writing.

Working as a Writer (15 credits)

You will acquire an understanding of the roles of agents, editors and publishers and how to interact with them. You will study the business aspects of being a writer and the ethical and legal concerns involved in publishing your work, as well as the wider opportunities for developing your presence in the writing community.

Creative Writing Workshop 1 (15 credits)

In this module you will study and develop key skills in creative prose writing, including creation and control of voice, point of view, setting, characterisation, dialogue, description.

Creative Writing Workshop 2 (15 credits)

In this module you will study and develop key skills in creative prose writing, including plot, structure and pacing, and thematic and character development. You will explore genre considerations (whether fiction, genre fiction or non-fiction) and the function of aspects such as theme, content, narrative momentum and pacing.

You will gain an understanding of how cultural and publishing companies respond creatively and commercially to the opportunities and challenges in curating content, both digital and in print. You will look at case studies of innovative strategies especially in the area of digitalisation.

During this module you will develop an extended piece of Creative Writing in Fiction, Non-fiction or Genre Fiction. It may take the form of short stories or essays, or a portion of a novel or non-fiction book, to a total of 12-15,000 words.

The English Department here at King’s, one of the largest and oldest in the UK, was ranked 8th in the UK for the quality and quantity of its research in the most recent Research Excellence Framework.

The Department of English is home to a large and diverse body of postgraduate researchers. Students are fully integrated into the intellectual and social life of the Department as researchers and teachers. Many of our students study part-time, commute or have caring responsibilities and the programmes allow flexibility.

Our expertise is split across research clusters , covering the full chronological range of literary periods. Current and recent research projects include: Indian writing of WW2; the bedchamber in late medieval literature; African migrant literature and US politics, and telegraphy and Victorian culture.

In second year (or part-time equivalent) students have the opportunity to work as Graduate Teaching Assistants and are supported in this through a full programme of training and mentoring events.

Students can undertake joint PhD programmes with King's and our partners in Humboldt Universität in Berlin and the National University of Singapore , spending time in each location to work with supervisors and to access the resources and expertise of both institutions. On completion, students receive a qualification awarded by both universities.

We offer a staged and comprehensive programme of training from the initial Research Workshops, through our ‘Skills Lunches’ and then final year professionalization workshops on applying for jobs or further funding. Doctoral students play a full role in organising the postgraduate seminar, ‘The Abstract’, and an annual postgraduate conference. The PhD in Creative Writing also places emphasis on professionalisation through guest lectures, a 'Thesis Workshop' and the 'Agents and Editors in Residence' scheme.

Our graduates have gone on to academic positions (recently at the University of Birmingham, the Universität Bonn and UCL) and careers in media, creative arts, teaching and publishing.

We are part of the London Arts and Humanities Partnership which offers scholarships as well as training.

First King's Creative Writing PhD graduate publishes debut novel

Scott Preston's novel The Borrowed Hills, published in April 2024, formed the main part of his Creative Writing PhD thesis. As the first graduate of the programme, Scott left with an impressive portfolio of creative and scholarly work, as well as valuable teaching experience.

Studying Abroad at King’s College London

This month, The Words is thrilled to share some writing from a guest correspondent, the English Department’s own Isabel Taylor. Isabel is a a sophomore English literature major and normally works as an office assistant in the department, but this semester, she is studying away in London. Read on to hear about her exciting time abroad.

Barely a week after New Year’s 2018, I hopped aboard an overnight flight from MSP to London Heathrow, filled with excitement and caffeine. I had chosen King’s College London for study away in order to focus on my English major, but the truth was that I had no idea what to expect. Today I’ve been at King’s for one month and fourteen days, and I’m no less thrilled by my classes than I was the day I arrived.

Besides a deeply unliterary course in management accounting, I’m taking three literature courses, all focused on my particular interest in Early Modernism: “Renaissance Wordplay,” “The Film of the Play,” and “A Mad World My Masters: Performing Culture in Jacobean London.” “Renaissance Wordplay” is my favorite, being a deep dive into the textual layers of poets such as Herbert, Milton and Donne. “The Film of the Play” explores film adaptations of Elizabethan tragedies such as Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus , Marlowe’s Edward II , and Middleton’s Revenger’s Tragedy . We watch a new film every week — in class! “A Mad World My Masters,” which takes its name from one of our studied plays, examines the Jacobean era of theater which followed the death of Queen Elizabeth I. Taken together, I am happily overwhelmed in getting to study so much of the period that I love.

Upon arrival, I attended a seminar about the differences between the British and American schooling systems. Instead of multiple class periods a week, each course has a weekly “lecture” period and a “seminar” period, each of which is an hour long. All students in the class attend the lecture period, which involves no questions or discussion; that much is saved for the seminar period, which includes a smaller portion of the class in an hour’s open discussion. As a result, I have only eight hours of class time a week. Much of the rest I devote to reading, as I read on average three plays and an accounting chapter every week.

Finally, London is the place to be for anyone enthusiastic about Early Modernism. The city is chock-full of literary history, from a Shakespeare walking tour that I took in my first week, to the painting of John Donne hanging in the National Portrait Gallery, which I saw in my third. Shakespeare’s Globe offers great student discounts to their amazing performances, and the National Theatre also puts on great Shakespeare performances; I attended two different performances of Macbeth within my first two weeks.

Altogether, my experience abroad has already been a life-changing experience––and I still have almost four months to go! There are no classes this week, so I plan to make a pilgrimage to Stratford-Upon-Avon in a few days. For its unparalleled depth and rigor of study, I would highly recommend King’s College London to any English major.
