Undergraduate Resume Standard
- Share This: Share Undergraduate Resume Standard on Facebook Share Undergraduate Resume Standard on LinkedIn Share Undergraduate Resume Standard on X
There is no “perfect” format when it comes to resumes; however, you can confidently use the O’Neill Resume Standard knowing it is employer tested and employer approved. Employers who recruit with O’Neill repeatedly compliment and confirm that they like the resume format we provide for our students. It is straight forward and has everything they need to know in a simple, easy-to-scan format.
Additionally, we’ve selected this template because it stands up best against Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Resumes with fancy formatting might look good on the surface and you might even think it will help you stand out in the eyes of employers, but they won’t work if they never get past the recruiting software employers often use. The fancy formatting can get jumbled going through the ATS and either look terrible, or even worse not be readable at all by your target audience.

4 Resume Mistakes to Avoid When You Don’t Have Much Experience
- Irina Cozma
A good resume can set you apart and help you land that interview.
Understanding the common mistakes job candidates make on resumes, and how to overcome them, can set you apart from your competitors. The first mistake is including irrelevant work experience. Instead, only add roles that are relevant to the position you’re applying for. The second is customizing your resume. While it’s in your benefit to adjust your resume to better match the job description, over-tuning your resume for every application can be a waste of time — and end up slowing down your search. This is especially true if you’re focused on securing a particular position that has a standard job title like “marketing coordinator” or “sales associate.” The third is overdesigning your resume. Recruiters only spend a few seconds scanning it, so keep the format simple and straightforward. The fourth is coming off as a novice. For example, don’t use an ancient email address — update it to something that sounds more professional, and give your resume a specific name so it’s easier to identify.
Resumes. Love them or hate them, you will probably need one when you apply for a job. The resume has a specific tactical role to play in your search — to get you the interview. You need to make sure it checks a few boxes to do that work because, even if you take advantage of your network, sooner or later, you will need to share your resume with the hiring manager.

10 Resume Tips to Help Your CV Stand Out, Experts Say
Posted: May 14, 2024 | Last updated: May 14, 2024
When you're hoping to land the job of your dreams , your resume can serve as the secret weapon you need to get your foot in the door. As the first touchpoint you'll have with a potential employer, it needs to stand out from the crowd if you want to be invited in for an actual interview. This is especially true in today's highly competitive job market.
"A great resume isn't simply a piece of paper on which to record employment history; it's a strategic tool for marketing yourself as the perfect job candidate," says Vit Koval , a global hiring and remote work advocate at the hiring company Globy .
With that in mind, experts say there are a handful of ways that you can upgrade your resume to ensure that it ends up in the right hands and makes the right impression. These are the top 10 resume tips to put your career goals within reach.
RELATED: How to Ace Every Common Job Interview Question .
1. Focus on results, not just experience.
Employers want to know the highlights of your career until now, but simply listing your experience won't paint the full picture.
"Too many resumes simply list experience," says Renee Fellman , a turnaround expert and interim CEO at Renee Fellman & Associates . "To make your resume stand out, clearly and concisely include the results you achieved that can be verified by the person to whom you reported."
She recommends asking yourself: "What were your goals? What did you accomplish?"
To that point, the experts all agree that it's a good idea to lean on data to quantify your achievements and showcase your impact. "Data is one of the most underused resume enhancement techniques," says Daniel Space , a senior HR director and content creator who goes by Dan from HR .
For instance, explain how you helped save the company $100,000, how you optimized a process for 11 percent efficiency, ensured training for a data analysis skill set of 900 employees, or managed a budget of $6 million, Space says, emphasizing the importance of specificity.
2. Tweak the resume to fit the job description.
RELATED: 10 Best Public Speaking Hacks That Experts Use .
3. Use a professional format for easy readability.
LaMonica also recommends giving careful consideration to your resume formatting, opting for a "clean, professional" style that's easy to read.
Hull agrees that "format matters." She recommends using standard fonts (Arial, Cambria, Garamond, and Times New Roman are all considered standard for CVs), appropriate use of white space, and clear margins and alignment.
Though consistency is key, Space adds that you can also use visual cues to highlight your CV's most important pieces of information. "For your best achievements, use bold lettering to call the reader's attention," he suggests.
4. Consider your order of presentation.
The order in which you share your experience, results data, education, and skills can also make a difference. "Highlight key skills and accomplishments at the beginning for emphasis," advises LaMonica.
"Your most important information is your experience—that should take up 80 percent of the page," adds Space, noting that education should go at the end. "You do not need a professional summary if your resume is directly appropriate for the role."
5. Keep it short.
Submitting a resume that's many pages long may signal to your potential employers that you're unable to synthesize information into digestible formats. Your biggest achievements are also likely to get buried in too much information.
"Brevity and clarity are key qualities of a great resume," says Hull, who was also the founding director of an executive coaching program for faculty at Duke University Medical Center.
RELATED: The 13 Best Ways to Make Money Online, Experts Say .
6. Use digital formats to your advantage.
Submitting a resume is different today than it was even a decade ago—one of the biggest differences being that most resumes are now digital.
By using the right relevant keywords, you have an opportunity to optimize your CV and pass through any automated tracking systems (ATS) used to screen candidates initially. In particular, you can include keywords, including specific skills and qualifications, that stand out from the job description.
LaMonica also recommends providing a link to a professional online profile or company website for additional information.
7. Address any gaps in employment.
Submitting your resume for consideration is the very first opportunity you'll have to tell your story. If you leave gaps in that story, your potential employers might make unfair assumptions.
This is especially important to remember if you've had any major gaps in your employment. "Tell the story of what was going on. Explain, don't be defensive, and focus on how the gap may have improved your skills, including resilience," suggests Hull.
8. Use a "Previous Experience" section.
Having lots of job experience is a good thing, but including details about jobs you held two decades ago can take away from your more recent achievements. Space adds that, unfortunately, "ageism is a thing"—meaning you may not want to highlight just how long you've been in the workforce.
RELATED: 5 Things You Should Never Lie About on Your Resume .
9. Proofread, proofread, proofread.
Nothing will turn off a potential employer faster than noticing typos or careless errors in your resume. Since your CV is your one chance to put your best foot forward, even minor mistakes in spelling, punctuation, or word choice can signal that your work is sloppy or rushed.
To avoid this mistake, read it slowly, ask a friend to give it a second pass, and run your work through a spellchecker. "Proofread meticulously to ensure error-free content," advises LaMonica.
10. Always include a cover letter.
Making a point of always including a brief but thoughtful and personalized cover letter "will greatly enhance your chances" of employment, says Koval. This is where you really get to tell your story, share your enthusiasm for the position, company, or general field of work, and let your personality shine.

FAQs on Volunteering and Career Growth
What Work Skills Can I Learn By Volunteering?
The possibilities are endless. Volunteer opportunities can help you learn skills such as budgeting, food service, working on a computer and more. You can also learn soft skills , or skills that can be transferred to many jobs such as leadership, networking and problem solving.
You can learn various skill sets depending on where you volunteer. For example, if you volunteer at a thrift store, you may learn customer service, organization, and cashier skills. You may also pick up communication and teamwork skills as you work with other people. More in-demand job skills you can learn by volunteering include:
- Public speaking
- Clerical tasks
- Fundraising
- Time management
- Multitasking
Where Should I Volunteer?
If you want your volunteer work to directly enhance your career, it’s a good idea to find a placement where you can learn or improve specific job skills. For example, if you want to gain skills for a career in education, explore opportunities in schools, youth community centers or tutoring organizations. You may be able get experience while working closely with an educator and possibly find a mentor . Visit the U.S. Department of Education for volunteer opportunities in education. If you’re interested in a career in event planning, many nonprofit organizations and event venues need volunteers in all areas. National nonprofits such as the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Association host events year-round where volunteers are needed.
Can Volunteer Work Fill Employment Gaps on a Resume?
Yes. Volunteer work is a great activity to add to your resume during the times you were unemployed. It shows a potential employer that you kept busy and had a real desire to contribute. If you can show that you were productive and learned work skills, it gives an employer a broader view of what you may bring to their company or organization. Even if your volunteer work does not directly relate to your career, it still can help, not only on your resume, but in your community!
Can Volunteering Actually Get Me a Job?
It is possible, but not guaranteed. Volunteering can help you meet community members and neighbors who may have contacts in your career area. Share your career goals with people who have similar interests or are employed in your field. You can also share your career goals with the staff at your volunteer location, if it’s a place you’d like to work. The staff may keep you in mind for future job openings, paid internships, or even apprenticeships if available.
Volunteering can not only help you give back to your community, but it can have a positive impact on your career. Here are a few resources for virtual and on-site listings to get started!

Farmers to Resume Offering Key Lines of Business Insurance in California
Farmers Insurance said it will resume accepting new business commercial multi-peril applications for auto service & repair, habitational, manufacturing, real estate and wholesale distribution policies in California.
The action follows the insurer group’s recent decision to lift its temporary moratorium on writing new commercial automobile insurance policies in the state.
“Farmers has operated in California for nearly a century, and while challenges remain, we are encouraged by the positive changes taking place in the state’s commercial insurance marketplace,” Eric Coleman, president of Business Insurance for Farmers, said in a statement.
Farmers said it has been working with the California Department of Insurance on plans to re-enter the business insurance market after a temporary pause in offering coverage for a subset of new business insurance policies.
“We have been consistent in our belief that a fundamental condition for offering coverage is that rates need to reflect the risk exposure we are insuring. Fortunately, through constructive discussions with the CDI, we are now ready to take this step back into the market,” stated Coleman.
Farmers said it plans to resume accepting new business commercial multi-peril applications as of Aug. 1.
Farmers last year also began limiting new homeowners insurance policies in California along with pullbacks from several other insurers.
Home insurance rates are on the rise in California, and availability has also become a concern, as many insurers are pulling back from the wildfire prone state. Proposed solutions to the crisis have included finding ways to expedite rate filings, enabling insurers to use reinsurance rates in filings, as well as enabling them to use catastrophe modeling to set rates.
Many of these proposals indicate a growing interest in making a change to Proposition 103 , the 1988 voter-approved law that requires prior approval from the California Department of Insurance before implementing property/casualty insurance rates.
The calls to make changes to Prop. 103 have grown louder as insurers pull back from writing homeowners insurance in the state.
Last May, State Farm announced it had stopped accepting new policy applications for property/casualty insurance in California due to increased risks from wildfires and inflation. Last month, State Farm said it would non-renew 30,000 California homeowners, rental dwelling, and other property insurance policies.
The Hartford announced in January it would discontinue writing new homeowners policies in California. Liberty Mutual in July 2023 stopped offering its business owner’s policy product in the wildfire-prone state and that same month Farmers began limiting new homeowners insurance policies in California.
All of this pressure seems to have pushed even the state’s top regulators into action. In addition to the work the CDI has done, California Gov. Gavin Newsom last week during a press conference on the state’s budget mentioned he was working to try and expedite the insurance rate filing process . The move was applauded by insurers.
The American Property Casualty Insurance Association, which has been calling for changes to Prop. 103 for years, applauded Newsom’s comments.
“We appreciate the Governor highlighting this critical issue,” stated Denni Ritter, APCIA department vice president for state government relations. “Expediting the rate review process is a vital component to addressing California’s insurance crisis. We look forward to working with the Administration, Legislature and Department of Insurance on this crucial reform and other reforms necessary to fix our broken regulatory system and increase the availability of insurance for California homeowners, drivers, and businesses.”

Texas power outage map: Severe storms leave nearly 800,000 homes, businesses without power
Editor's Note: There are now 480,000 without power in Houston, Texas and surrounding areas. Click here for an updated story on power outages and restorations efforts.
Severe storms hit southeastern Texas on Thursday, killing four people, downing trees and knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes in the Houston area and surrounding areas.
Houston woke up to scenes of destruction on after severe storms with winds of up to 100 mph spewed debris across roads, and littered the ground downtown with broken glass. Officials confirmed that four people died in the storm.
"We're in recovery mode," Houston Mayor John Whitmire said.
In a news conference on Thursday evening, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said two of the deaths were caused by falling trees, while a third person died in a crane accident.
At the news conference, Whitmire urged residents to continue to stay home amid the dangerous road conditions. Widespread power outages had also knocked out traffic lights across the city, posing traffic control hazards for morning commuters. Whitmire said officials were also "concerned" about the dangers of broken glass on roadways.
"Downtown is a mess. It's dangerous due to the glass and the lack of traffic lights," he said. "So stay at home. I can't emphasize that, repeat that enough."
"Please do not drive in Downtown Houston tonight, or for that matter, anywhere else in the region that sustained storm damage," the National Weather Service office that serves Houston and Galveston said on social media Thursday night . "Widespread debris, glass and electrical lines are in the streets. Follow local news media and emergency management officials recommendations."
Flights were grounded at Houston's two major airports because of the weather. Sustained winds topping 60 mph were recorded at Bush Intercontinental Airport, the Associated Press reports. The Houston Independent School District also canceled classes Friday at all of its schools.

Texas severe weather watches and warnings
Friday's forecast sees a potential for more rain in the Houston and Galveston area, although the NWS says it is not expecting "anything near as robust as Thursday's line of storms."
Most of the rain is expected to fall along and south of the I-10 corridor, with an additional half inch to inch forecast south of I-10. Rain chances are expected to taper off going into the late afternoon and early evening hours, according to the NWS.
