The problem of pollution is seen more in big cities because there is a huge amount of smoke coming out of factories and motor vehicles in 24 hours, due to which people have a lot of breathing problems. Humans are cutting trees and haze for their progress, due to which the amount of pollution is increasing.

Environmental pollution causes our social status to be fragmented. In the world, it is very important to maintain the balance of natural gases, but humans are harvesting the blur of trees for their selfishness.

If there is no tree here, then the trees will not be able to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. In such a situation, a very high percentage of trees will be consumed. The problem of global warming will increase due to carbon dioxide.

If natural resources are manipulated it causes natural disasters. We have forgotten our nature due to industrial development, due to which various types of diseases have surrounded us today, there is a great need for development to bring awareness.

The survival system is also becoming a dangerous system for life. For this reason, many serious problems are arising. Inhalation due to air pollution is causing lung and respiratory diseases. Stomach problems are arising due to water pollution.

Animals drinking dirty water are also dying due to water pollution. Problems such as mental stress, and deafness due to noise pollution are faced with anxiety and turmoil.

The solution to Pollution:

To save the environment from pollution, rapid control is needed. Afforestation should be given more attention. If possible, trees should be harvested at least. The government will have to take appropriate steps against environmental pollution and issue new laws against it.

Not only the government but politicians, thinkers, social workers, and every human being in India will have to become more aware of how to overcome it. There is a great need for development to bring awareness. Many efforts are being made to eliminate pollution among the scientists of the modern era.

Every human should think that there should be no water source or reservoir around the garbage heap and dirt. Humans should use products like coal and petroleum very rarely and adopt pollution-free alternatives as much as possible. Human beings should use solar energy, CNG, wind energy, biogas, cooking gas, and hydropower more, and doing so helps in reducing air pollution and water pollution.

Factories that have already been built cannot be removed, but the factories which the government should build should be built away from the city. Such traffic tools should be used to reduce smoke and help prevent air pollution. The felling of trees and forests should be banned.

The water of the rivers should be saved from waste and the water should be made potable with the help of recycling. Plastic bags should be used less and those that can be recycled should be used more. Laws must be followed to eliminate pollution.

If a man wants to survive on the earth, then do not let the environment get polluted and make every possible effort to keep the environment around us clean and clean. The Ahupuaʻa is a complex system and worldview that evolved over thousands of years. It is a sustainable land management way of living that relates all things as divine, sacred, and at times prohibited or kapu. This worldview is manifested by the life from mountain to ocean. It is what would be considered these days as sustainability. In the ahupuʻa worldview, social systems and ecosystem are integrated as one. When social systems are separated from ecosystem, great ecological damage can be done. One example is the deforestation of North Korea by Japanese colonial forces. This deforestation of North Korean lands lead to millions of deaths. When social systems lead by anthropocentric values leave out sustainable development practices, ecological destruction can and will continue to lead to a chain effect of events unforeseen and sometimes unnoticed till it is too late. One example of seeming unrelated environmental problem that occurs during deforestation is water pollution. Forest hold soil, nutrients, and water that sustain the ecological systems. Without forests, soil is washed away with all its richness into the oceans and streams. This influx of runoff water causes a type of pollution called nutrient pollution. Nutrient pollution causes algae blooms which suffocate marine life and blocks light that is needed for some marine plants. Deforestation also is a key contributor to soil runoff water that directly effects one of the most valuable resources in the ecosystem, the coral reefs. Generally, when we talk of environmental pollution, the very first impression that comes across our minds is a visible problem that conjures up images of rubbish dumps as well oil spills, but the truth is, most forms of environmental pollution are invisible to the human eye and come in quite a number of different forms.

It’s quite apparent that living organisms can’t live by themselves, and for that, all living organisms inclusive of plants, human beings, animals, among other physical surroundings with whom we interact with make up the general environment.

All these constitutes of the environment depend on each other, and for that, they maintain a balance in nature. Affirmatively, these dependent relationship calls for the creation of controls to manage environmental imbalances and which highly result to pollutions.

Ideally, environmental pollution can be viewed as the undesirable change in the biological, physical as well as chemical characteristics of water, air, and land on the overall.

Environmental pollution can also be viewed as the introduction of contaminants to our surroundings wholly as a byproduct of human actions. Today, environmental pollution is one of the most serious global challenges facing humanity, as well as other life forms.

According to a publication by the United Nations Environment Annual Report 2018, pollution is a global issue affecting over 100 million people worldwide and which is comparable to global killer diseases such as HIV and Malaria.

In the US, approximately 40% of rivers and 46% of lakes are too polluted for aquatic life, fishing, swimming, or even home usage. Again, roughly one-third of the world’s topsoil is already degraded and which is as a result of improper agricultural practices, deforestation as well industrial practices, practices which threaten the existence of the world’s topsoil 60 years from now. Again, the World Health Organization discloses that an estimation of 91% of the world’s total population lives in areas that do not meet the WHO air quality guidelines levels.

Its also estimated that air pollution causes roughly 4.2 million deaths of premature deaths worldwide. To this end, it’s quite apparent that environmental pollution is one of the most serious global issues that we are facing today and which needs to be given close attention.

Types of Environmental Pollution:

Air pollution:.

Ideally, there are two major types of air pollution inclusive of primary and secondary. Firstly, primary air pollution is usually emitted directly from their source while, on the other hand, secondary air pollution is formed once primary pollutants react in the atmosphere.

Air pollution is considered to the most dangerous as well prevalent form of pollution and more so when viewed from an urbanization perspective. The major cause of air pollution includes partially combusted exhaust gases, which are an industrial by-product emission inclusive of carbon monoxide and Sulphur dioxide.

In other instances, air pollution can occur when substances such as friable asbestos fiber are released into the air and which might cause serious health issues.

Water Pollution:

This type of pollution occurs when water bodies are contaminated. Typically, each and every living thing highly depends on water to live, and for that, pollution of any water, bodies tend to affect the ecosystem from all levels inclusive of human health.

Some of the common causes of water pollution comprise of oil spills, insecticides, fertilizers, industrial waste, detergents, pesticides, among other contaminants. Water pollutants might affect living organisms by either toxicity or by reducing oxygen levels in the water.

Thermal Pollution:

This type of pollution is mostly related to industrial practices where they release heat energy as a by-product, and once released into the air or water bodies, it results in global warming. Usually, the problem arises when the excess of carbon dioxide is released in the atmosphere, and as a result, global warming occurs due to interference of the ozone layer.

Soil Pollution:

Soil pollution normally strips the soil its nutrients, and some of the major causes of soil pollution comprise of the use of agricultural chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, radioactive and industrial waste, among other contaminants. Soil pollution at times results in soil erosion as well as the barrenness of the soil, leaving it unproductive.

Noise Pollution:

This type of environmental pollution refers to the excess of unpleasant sounds emanating from transportation, heavy machinery, human occupation, infrastructure, industrial practices, among other sources.

Affirmatively, noise pollution usually has detrimental effects on both the human physical and mental health as its highly linked with cases of depression, hearing problems, hypertension, increased incidents of coronary artery diseases, among other ailments.

Noise pollution is also associated with instances of reducing the number of viable habitats for wildlife animals as it interferes with communication and sounds and, as a result interfering with the way animals navigate, communicate, detect prey and predators as well mate.

Effects of Environmental Pollution:

Ideally, each and every form of pollution has its own effects on the overall environment inclusive of; air pollution is highly associated with instances of increased respiratory issues; it also causes acid rain, as well as interference with the ozone layer.

Water pollution, on the other hand, causes serious threats to aquatic life, animals as well as humans. Soil pollution also has substantial effects on humans, animals, aquatic life, among other microorganisms.

Noise pollution is highly associated with mental issues as well as interfering with wildlife habitats. Thermal pollution mostly affects the ozone layer, while radioactive pollution affects both the ozone layer and the overall human health.

Pollution had existed long before humans evolved. For instance, volcanic eruptions commonly pumped massive amounts of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, causing acid rain. The greenhouse gas, ozone, forms from natural, photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. 

However, significant levels of pollution occurred only after the Industrial Revolution, when untreated exhausts and toxic waste products were released into the environment. Air pollution was rampant, with thick, toxic smog covering most towns and cities. Water pollution affected many water bodies. Toxic substances leached into the soil, hampering the soil quality.

Today, there have been many measures to curb the effects of pollution, but its repercussions can still be observed. For instance, the land and sea ice near the poles have been decreasing at an alarming rate. This has led to the debate regarding climatic factors and their impact on our environment. There was a time when lead used to be added to motor fuel. This substance, combined with the world’s increasing demand for motor vehicles, caused a spike in air pollution. What made this air pollution more dangerous is the fact that the air had high levels of lead.

Lead is toxic and can cause a vast array of health problems. The most common illnesses are neurological in nature. Lead can also travel through the placenta, between a mother and her unborn child. Moreover, young children and infants are even more sensitive to lead. They can develop learning deficits, behavioural problems and also a low IQ.

Furthermore, some studies have arrived at a “lead-crime postulate”, where children who were exposed to high levels of lead were more likely to indulge in criminal activities. This correlation was made as to the crime rates during the 1980s, and early 1990s were rather high. Lead can also cause neurological effects on vertebrates and impair the reproductive capabilities of plants. More ominously, lead can be absorbed into the tissues of such organisms, and they can pass it on to us when we consume them.

Technological progress also brings newer forms of pollution. Radioactive pollution is one of the rarer types of pollution. This type of pollution occurs naturally as well – elements such as uranium and thorium are present in rocks and soil. Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon naturally present in all living organisms. It is created by cosmic rays. However, these natural sources of radiation are of little concern. Only anthropogenic sources of radioactivity are considered lethal sources of pollution. For instance, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is the most publicised nuclear disaster ever to occur. The total death count was documented to be at 16,000. However, unofficial reports indicated that the death toll was much higher. Most deaths occurred due to acute radiation poisoning and many other deaths were caused due to radioactivity-induced cancer. Though it has been more than a few decades, radioactivity still persists around the site of the nuclear reactor. Efforts to contain the radioactivity included building the Shelter Structure, more popularly known as the “sarcophagus”. It was built in December 1986 and enclosed the reactor, preventing radiation from leaking through the building. 

Though the levels of pollution have dropped down since the industrial revolution, we still see many repercussions to this day. Following are some extreme cases of pollution caused by anthropological activities.

The Great Smog of London was a severe case of air pollution that occurred in 1952. The event caused massive disruption by severely affecting visibility. It also caused a variety of respiratory illnesses in 1,00,000 individuals and the death of over 4,000 as a direct result of the smog. 

In India, pollution is even more rampant. Delhi has recorded one of the worst cases of air pollution, with the air rated as “hazardous” in November 2017.

The “Earth Hour” is another globally recognised event that calls for everyone to turn off all lights for one hour in order to raise awareness of the significance of reducing electricity usage in order to minimise pollution on Earth.

The government’s obligation to maintain national laws is one way to reduce pollution on Earth. Offenders should be subject to harsh penalties, such as increased fines and longer prison terms, which will force them to reconsider their influence on the environment and serve as a message to those who are not currently involved but who might be in the future.
