Drainage systems play a vital role in the framework of any well-functioning society. From a hydraulic design perspective, a drainage network is just the opposite of a water supply distribution network. This study focuses specifically on evaluating and properly designing the existing drainage system which may help the relevant government body in planning, implementing, operating, and maintaining the stormwater drainage systems to solve the problem of wastewater logging like in the study area, along with sustainability that contributes to better service in drainage schemes. According to the results obtained from this study, the existing storm and sewer drainage facility in ward number four of Rajarhat Gopalpur Municipality, West Bengal is observed to be insufficient to transport the peak stormwater discharge during the essential design period. Several drains are found overflowing that cause wastewater-logged flooding and misbalances the day-to-day life of the citizens, especially during the rainy season. The hydraulic analysis for the drainage system had been carried out using SewerGEMS software by dividing the area into seven sub-catchments for better management of the flow of wastewater. From the analysis, it is observed that in some drains, the velocity is very low to negligible in comparison to the self-cleansing velocity. Other parameters such as flow and hydraulic grade line were also computed from the existing network. From the study, a few modifications are advised such as how to achieve a minimum velocity that should be developed in all stormwater-sewer drains so as not to allow any deposition in the drains.

A technical survey was conducted in the 16 Poblacion barangays of Catarman, Northern Samar to gather technical data on the existing length of drainage canals, the land area of the barangay, and the average slope of the existing drainage canal. Using a survey questionnaire, the reasons for flooding and perceived remedial measures were gathered from the barangay residents. The existing lengths of the drainage canal in the barangays range from 0.52 – 2.263 km. The average slope of the drainage canal in the barangays ranges from 0.012 – 1.572 %. The average depth of maximum flooding ranges 0 (no flooding) – 1.3 m. The computed drainage density for the different barangays ranges 2.92 – 32.46 km/km2 while the computed additional lengths of drainage needed in the barangays ranges 0 (sufficient length of existing drainage canal) – 4,954 m. Graha Wisata Sidoarjo Housing has a land area of 470,000 m2 located in Lebo Village, Sidoarjo District, Sidoarjo Regency. The housing is passed by the Anak Afvoer Sidokare channel. With the change in land function, it is necessary to analyze the capacity of the Anak Afvoer Sidokare watershed. The rainfall data used is the annual maximum rainfall from the rain station Durungbedug, Ketintang, Sidoarjo, Sumput .. The method of rainfall analysis uses the Log Pearson type III method. Planned flood discharge in the Anak Afvoer Sidokare watershed at 25 years using the Nakayasu method is 450.55 m3 / sec while the existing Afvoer capacity with dimensions of 10 m x 4.172 m is 537.39 m3 / sec, the cross section of the Son Afvoer Sidokare channel is not overflow.

Flood inundation occurs on main roads in Meulaboh City, especially when it rains. Johan Pahlawan District is one of the sub-districts in West Aceh Regency. The effect of wrong and improper designing of drainage facilities has resulted in provision of inadequate and inefficient sections. This in turn among other things causes over flooding which invariably affect road pavements. This work follows a corrective step by step design approach of drainage facilities for prevention and control of flood more especially in road pavements. The design process and procedure for drainages involve the geological survey of the project area; hydrological analysis which involves determination of runoff coefficient, return period, time of concentration, storm runoff etc., hydraulic design which includes selecting optimal bedding slope S, appropriate material Manning’s roughness factor, n, and then determining adequate sizes of drainage channels such as rectangular and trapezoidal sections; and structural analysis of the drainage system. Finally, the durability and serviceability as well as efficient drainage capacity of drains depends on choose of adequate sizes of drainage channels and design approach outlined in order to prevent erosion, water logging and flooding.

Observations of recent climate history indicate that the frequency of occurrence of heavy rainfall events is increasing. This increasing trend will likely continue in the future due to global warming. Flooding of roads, especially as a result of intense precipitation, is the major cause of weather-related disruption to the road transport sector. A storm is characterized mainly by: Intensity, Duration and Frequency. Due to production of greenhouse gases, hydrologic cycle is changing day by day which is causing variations in terms of Intensity, Duration and Frequency of rainfall events. By pinpointing the potential effects of climate change and adapting to them, is the one way to reduce regions susceptibility. Since rainfall characteristics are often used for planning and design of highway drainage structures, reviewing and bring up-to-date rainfall characteristics which is Intensity–Duration–Frequency (IDF) curves for future climate situations is important. Over the last few years, there have been reported cases road flooding leading to driving problems and structural failures of roads and cutting-off of many communities due to the washing away of the road pavement at the water crossing location. In this paper, I use the Precipitation data obtained in Ghana from Ghana Meteorological Services Department (Departmental Note No. 23) and Ministry of Roads and Highways Review of Intensity Duration Frequency Data by observing the impact of the increase in heavy rainfall events on the design and performance of road drainage systems. This research work looks at culverts at ten (10) Major stream crossing locations in the within the Tumu Road Area of the Ghana Highway Authority, which have been experiencing frequent flooding. The 10 culverts were selected after series of interviews, consultations and field visits within the area under consideration and their hydraulic capacities analyzed for 10yrs, 20yrs, 50yrs and 100yrs flood return periods. This quantification demonstrated the need for updating rainfall IDF relationships to reflect changing climate conditions as most of the culvert that were some time ago adequate are no longer capable of safely passing the increased runoff as a result of many factors of which climate change is a major factor.

This paper outlines the national approach of stormwater management in Malaysia. In order to cure stormwater runoff in the campus, a conventional drainage system has been designed to provide the fastest possible transport of stormwater runoff out of the catchments into the receiving water. Conventional drainage system, unfortunately has led to increase the occurrence of overflowing stormwater in the areas of UTM KL Campus. Therefore conventional drainage system is no longer an effective measure in solving stormwater runoff .Due to this problem, increasing the public awareness to the negative impact of urban stormwater runoff to the environment has led the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to introduce the new Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia and Best Management Practices (BMPs) in 1975. Therefore this study had been carried out with the aim to determine the important element of a sustainable drainage system in a campus that can be applied in UTM KL Campus. The study was conducted by using observations and semi-structure interview form expert panel in UTM KL. The findings indicated in the campus are still at the initial stage in adopting the sustainable drainage system concept. This study has been concluded that there is a serious need for the establishment of a clear guidance for a sustainable drainage system in UTM KL campus. Stormwater management is the process of departing from the traditional approach which is currently going on in the UTM KL Campus to a more ecological and sustainable drainage system which is in peace with the nature. UTM KL must put a lot of efforts to improve the conventional drainage system to a more sustainable drainage system if they want towards achieving a sustainable campus status in the future.
