Dangal movie review: An unmissable epic

dangal tamil movie review

Director: Nitesh Tiwari

Cast: Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Aparshakti Khurrana

When I entered the theatre, I was constantly thinking that Dangal is the last ray of hope this year but at the same time, the hit formula of Aamir Khan releasing his films on the festive season of Christmas and New Years’s was not lost on me. Caught up in my own train of thoughts, the screen in front of me came to life and what followed was a memorable journey of 161 minutes.

Mahavir Phogat (Aamir Khan) is an Indian wrestler in Haryana who never won a gold medal in his career. He is married to Daya (Sakshi Tanwar) and wishes to have a son who will fulfill his dream of winning a gold medal. But fate had its own game and Daya delivers four daughters in the hope of a son. One fine day, Mahavir’s first and second daughters, Geeta (Fatima Sana Sheikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) beat up the local guys and the journey of Mahavir to train them to win gold medals starts. Omkar (Aparshakti Khurrana), nephew of Mahavir joins them in their aggressive training.

Soon after, Geeta and Babita become national gold medalists in women wrestling but their lives change upside down when they move to Patiala to National Sports Academy to train for the Commonwealth Games 2010. What happens next is what Dangal is all about.

Director Nitesh Tiwari has finally added a feather of a well-made film on his cap. Though his previous outings Chillar Party and Bhoothnath Returns were decent movies, his Dangal comes out as a champion. Despite having too much to do in just one film, the filmmaker manages to make one that wins in every aspect.

His narrative is engaging to the core. Though the film is pretty long, the emotions and humour quotient in it will succeed in keeping you on the edge of your seat. The best part of the film is its easy flow. With Dangal, one can easily say that Nitesh has made a mark for himself in the industry. Helming a film with a huge star like Aamir and appropriate narrative is commendable. Cinematography by Setu is praise-worthy as he has shot such beautiful locations in Haryana.

Aamir Khan’s last outing PK (2014) created shockwaves at the box office, Dangal is yet another such film where the actor completely steals the show. He proved that he can create magic on the silver screen with any script in hand. The way he has pulled off the character of a wrestler flanked by his body transition is outstanding. His aggression in the second half definitely deserves a standing ovation. Dangal is one of the best gifts from Aamir Khan to his fans on this festive season.

When the makers were hunting for a female lead opposite Aamir Khan, a lot of names popped up. Later, speculations were put to rest when the makers announced Sakshi Tanwar as their leading lady. While many were sceptical about her doing justice to this hard-hitting character, some also believed that the lady will emerge as a winner in the end. After seeing her performance in Dangal, one thing that struck me is that Sakshi has the capability to be crowned as a versatile actress. She made the character of Daya look real, raw and believable. Even though he plays a minor role, Aparshakti Khurrana as a supporting cast did a fabulous job. It takes a lot to leave a mark in a film like Dangal which is an out and out Aamir Khan film.

Coming to the girls, Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra, they truly are powerhouse talents. They both are magical on screen and made the film look so convincing. Vivan Bhatena and Girish Kulkarni in their small roles are good. The noticeable part of the film is that, Dangal probably is the only film where people stand up for the national anthem, twice.

On the other hand, few portions in the film will remind you of Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De India, especially the last wrestling match and Aamir’s mission behind it. Music by Pritam is peppy, especially the Dangal title track sung by Daler Mehendi. Hanikarak Bapu and Naina are melodious.

Dangal is the best feast on this Christmas and one can’t deny that the film is the best one of 2016. The film is recommended not only to Aamir Khan’s fans but also to the family audience who were awaiting a family drama that is high on emotions.

Dangal review: wrestle like a woman

In a year that saw girls ruling India's show at the Rio Olympics, it's but apt that a film glorifying women's achievements in the wrestling arena be made.

And that brings Dangal (which means wrestling) for you, with two girls and their father putting up a resolute fight against the society and finally waging the ultimate battle on the wrestling ring.

Aamir Khan reprises the real-life character of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler, who hopes that his offspring would achieve his dream of winning a gold medal for the country.

And like the average Indian husband, he pins all his hopes on his wife bearing a son. The entire village making conspiracies in hush-hush tones so that Mahavir will be blessed with a baby boy is a social issue presented in a sugar-coated manner. Their numerous 'tactics' fail to help Mahavir and he gets a household full of girls.

Dangal review: wrestle like a woman

But a street brawl puts Mahavir in his senses and his two elder daughters are literally dragged out of their mama's lap and pushed into rigorous training. Mahavir's first battle is against his own daughters – Geeta (Zaira Wasim) and Babita (Suhani Bhatnagar) – who use every trick in the book to get better of their papa dearest. The delightful song 'Haanikarak Baapu' – sung by Sarwar Khan, Sartaz Khan Barna & Saddy Ahmad – sets the right mood as kids huff and puff through the tasks.

Dangal review: wrestle like a woman

The movie moves ahead taking crisp strides and before long, the little daughters blossom into the wrestlers their father had dreamed of. Post intermission, the movie concentrates on the battles that take place outside the wrestling ring for which one can seldom be prepared.

Director Nitesh Tiwari, who has co-written the movie, brings us a neatly packaged film that focuses purely on wrestling and his wrestlers. There is little dramatization and but for some plot holes, the movie can be called near-perfect. Tiwari narrates a honest sporting tale and even gave the almost-mandatory 'Bollywood mantra of ishq' a skip.

Dangal review: wrestle like a woman

Aamir Khan too should be credited for taking a step back in the film. There are no starry airs here and except for an introductory fight, Aamir's Mahavir shies away from making any heroic statements. He sticks to his role of a father, who has to keep his parenting feelings under check, for the greater glory of his daughters. And the star doesn't disappoint.

Matching steps with Mr Perfectionist are four girls. Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar as the little kids bring an earnest performance that will easily win your hearts. The older version of the children, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, too do not miss a beat. Ritwik Sahore as Mahavir's simpleton nephew and Sakshi Tanwar as his loyal wife fit perfectly into their roles.

All the songs by Pritam gel well with the movie and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya is sure to make you chuckle.

Dangal review: wrestle like a woman

The wrestling scenes look original and infuse a raw energy that would want you to root for the girls' victory.

The tale of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters is a story that needs to be told and team Dangal should be lauded for doing that right.

Don't miss this one!

  • Trivia The movie is a real life story based on Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained "dangal" to 6 girls, 4 of them were his very own while 2 were that of his brother. Interestingly, all of them won medals at some or the other level!
  • Goofs Teenage Babita is left-handed, which you can see from the way she claps during Geeta's Dangal matches. But she becomes right-handed when she gets older, which you can see from the way she claps during Geeta's Commonwealth games.

Mahavir Singh Phogat : You have to fight in a way that people will remember you. If you win silver, sooner or later, you will be forgotten. If you win gold, you will be an example, And examples are given, child... not forgotten. See those girls? If you win tomorrow, you will not win alone. Millions of girls like them will win along with you. It will be a victory for every girl who is considered inferior to boys; who is forced into household chores, who is married off to just raise children. Tomorrow's match is the most important one. Because tomorrow, we are not fighting just that Australian, but all those people who think lesser of girls.

Film Review: ‘Dangal’

A Bollywood girl-power drama about a father-coach turning his daughters into star wrestlers is too much of a formula thing.

Dangal

Aamir Khan , the star of “ Dangal ,” is as formidable and celebrated a movie star as India has going. Two years ago, he played the lead character in “PK,” a sci-fi comedy about an alien who visits earth and points out everything wrong with it; the film went on to become the top-grossing movie in Bollywood history. Fifteen years ago, Khan starred in “Lagaan,” the transporting colonial cricket-match musical that was the last Indian film to be nominated for an Academy Award. In “Dangal” (the title means “Wrestling”), Khan has aged nicely. He keeps his short muscular body poised, and his cropped hair sets off jutting ears, plunging eyebrows, and a serene scowl that almost never leaves his face; he looks like a jock version of Salman Rushdie. Yet within that tight-lipped mask, he finds a hundred ways to communicate emotion.

MA – Cry of Silence

Busan Competition Film ‘MA – Cry of Silence’ Picked Up by Alpha Violet

That’s more than you can say for “Dangal,” a one-trick domestic sports drama that drags on for two hours and 40 minutes. “Lagaan,” which was close to four hours, earned every minute of its running time, but “Dangal” is just a thin inspirational tale stretched out well past the point that U.S. audiences will have much patience for it.

Popular on Variety

It’s based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler who lived for the proud dream of seeing his country take home athletic “gold.” (It sounds like he’s talking about the Olympics, but he means any international competition.) Due to a lack of government sports funding, Mahavir wasn’t able to go for the gold himself (he became an office worker). So he took his two eldest daughters, Geeta and Babita, and turned them into competitive wrestlers, cutting against the grain of what Indian society wanted and expected girls to be.

In “Dangal,” is Mahavir a domineering stage father, using his kids to live out his failed dreams? No doubt. That’s why he prays to have sons. But when God blesses him with daughters, he transfers his obsession with molding a champion right onto them; as a coach, he’s both a domineering egotist and a de facto feminist. If the movie has a theme, it’s that Mahavir is a patriarchal thinker forced, by circumstance, to move into the 21st century. He’s a lot like India itself.

That means, among other things, that he’s going to treat his daughters with no mercy. When they’re teenagers, he subjects them to a grueling training regimen (worst restriction: no spicy food), and the defining moment comes when he cuts off their hair. It’s a lot like a Marine cut; as the two see it, they’ve been shorn (tearfully) of their identities, which their father will now rebuild from the ground up. There is — or could have been — a resonance to all of this. But Nitesh Tiwari, the director of “Dangal,” works strictly on the surface. The movie isn’t a musical, but it’s got a lot of those tabla-meets-EDM Bollywood dance tracks, and when one of them is laid over a training montage, the effect is less Bollywood than cookie-cutter Hollywood. It’s the equivalent of watching an American movie with the same story starring Greg Kinnear as the dad/coach and Dove Cameron and Lizzy Greene as the daughters, only with the cliché training sequence set to “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now).” “Dangal” is that kind of movie.

When the girls get older, the film switches actresses (the two younger ones, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar, are big-eyed urchins who barely register), and Fatima Sana Shaikh, who takes over the role of Geeta, emerges as Khan’s co-star. She has a gentle, dimpled face, but with her hair cropped she resembles a competitively coiled Kate Winslet, and there’s something touching in her devotion. Geeta is so fierce, yet is so carrying out the will of her father (which becomes her will), that she’s a revolutionary and a bowing disciple at the same time. The movie is way too vague about the essential facts of female wrestling in India. In the first half, it implies that Geeta and her sister are breaking the mold — that they’re heading into boys’ terrain, to the point that they have no choice but to wrestle boys. By the time they land at the National Sports Academy, where the coach becomes a rival to Mahavir, they’re suddenly part of a whole team of young-women wrestlers. When did that happen? You think: Good for India, but it renders the film’s journey more conventional than it had implied.

“Dangal” culminates in a championship bout at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, and Tiwari stages it well. Geeta has to face down an Australian wrestler with a raw-boned look to kill, and as much as any boxing drama, the movie makes you feel the human ferocity in both of them. To raise the stakes, Mahavir isn’t even there; a foe has literally locked him in an office. Geeta, to be true to her father’s dream, must do it on her own. There’s hardly a moment in “Dangal” that doesn’t go according to the numbers, but after 160 minutes’ worth of formula, the movie certainly hits a note of touching tribute to the way girl power is sweeping the world.

dangal tamil movie review

Let it never be said that if you’ve seen one inspirational sports movie, you’ve seen them all.

Sure, Nitesh Tiwari’s Bollywood crowd-pleaser “Dangal” follows a formula: Father abandons his dream of being an international wrestling champion. Father hopes for a son who will live out his dream for him. Father ends up with four daughters.

Father discovers that two of his daughters are dexterous brawlers. Father declares, “From now on, they will only wrestle.” Father trains those daughters, in defiance of the villagers’ tut-tutting and assumptions about women’s roles, to mud wrestle, and instills in them a spirit of feminism.

Wherever “Dangal” goes — a highlight reel might include the older daughter rising from mud wrestling to pro, getting a new coach and beating up her jealous father, who later trains her by couriered video after being barred from the sports academy — it goes there in the maximalist Bollywood style, with emotions set to full blast and its heart firmly on its sleeve.

Based on the true story of Geeta and Babita Phogat (played as children by Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar and as adults by Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra), who eventually competed in the Olympics, and their trainer-father, Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan), the movie benefits from the amount of time it devotes to wrestling strategy. It pays off in suspenseful bouts that haven’t been hyperedited into incoherence, with actresses who really appear to be grappling.

Because this is Bollywood, the training montages are accompanied by sprightly pop music, though not as choreographed song-and-dance numbers. And as goosed as the drama gets (only sports historians can say if Mahavir became trapped in a janitorial closet during the 2010 Commonwealth Games), the uplift feels earned, or at least tough to resist.

Dangal Not rated. In Hindi, with English subtitles. Running time: 2 hours 41 minutes.

Dangal movie review: Aamir Khan and Phogat sisters’ story win the bout

Dangal movie review by rohit vats: dangal could be aamir khan’s his best performance till date. yes, even better than lagaan..

Dangal Cast : Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Girish Kulkarni, Aparshakti Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra Director: Nitesh Tiwari Rating: 4/5

Aamir Khan is receiving rave reviews for Dangal.

First they ignore you, Then they laugh at you, Then they fight you, Then you win.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games are years away. Geeta Phogat (Zaira Wasim, Fatima Sana Shaikh) has just returned to Balali, her village in Haryana, after months of preparation at the National Sports Academy in Patiala. Something about her has changed. She isn’t exactly the same girl her father, former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat ( Aamir Khan ), trained. She is more confident, ambitious, better skilled and ready to take on the world by storm.

On the other hand, the rustic Mahavir wants to keep things simple. The tough patriarch wants his daughter to remain focused on the elusive international wrestling medals for India. He doesn’t like the way Geeta has been sucked into the new training regime. He thinks his methods are better than the coach’s at the academy.

Mahavir wants a son to fulfil his dream. (YouTube)

This is the beginning of a war that’s surprisingly physical and abnormally mental. He challenges Geeta for a bout where he would test her newly acquired skills. As absurd as it sounds, the burly former wrestler, indeed fights his own daughter with all his might. He loses and with it, the years of conditioning of women and male domination are thrown out of the window.

This is the point where director Nitesh Tiwari had to decide the hero of the film: Will Mahavir curb his instincts and become an even more fierce coach, or will he let Geeta explore the horizon? He picks the first.

Chapter 1: Mission Impossible

Mahavir has four daughters after some years. (YouTube)

It is the early 1980s and wrestlers are treated as local heroes. This is yet not the time for gym-toned bodies and common folks like to believe that wrestlers are physically superior to them. On top of that, Mahavir Singh Phogat is a former national champion. Now a government servant, Phogat, who wears a gold ring and a silver-plated watch, has a volatile temper and wants a son to carry his legacy forward.

Listen: Aamir Khan’s Dangal jukebox

Such sentiments have already taken Haryana to the wrong side of the gender equality debate by the beginning of the ’90s. His apologetic wife (Sakshi Tanwar) shows how you start liking your oppressor because there is nowhere else to go. Not so directly, though. Tanwar’s comic timing tries to deflect the focus from her life to the little girls who are forced to fight the local chauvinists because their father has decided to transform them into world-class wrestlers.

Chapter 2: Pride And Prejudice

Geeta’s gait and walk show her confidence. Remember it’s still early ‘90s. (YouTube)

Mahavir is doing it because he has a dream to fulfil, but the girls have taken up wrestling because they are tired of cringe-worthy men and unrepentant boys. No wonder, they get their first boy-versus-girl fight because the organisers believed, “Agar apne pehalwano ko sher se bhi lada dega toh itne log nahi aayenge,” (You won’t sell these many tickets even if your boys fight a lion).

Watch: Our FB Live discussion on Aamir Khan’s Dangal

Geeta’s face, stride and attitude scream of retribution. She is there to break bones and the proverbial glass ceiling. And she doesn’t need to wear a classy gown for that. She wears lycra beneath her loose shirt and shorts that leaves only her palms and feet exposed. It’s in stark contrast to the boys’ outfits: nothing but a loin cloth. Still somebody in the crowd blows an obscene whistle. She must win the fight at any cost.

Chapter 3: Resurrection

People cheer the winners. They celebrate your success when you are on a high. Some don’t. And you meet them again when you return to your roots. In the rise and fall, what keeps a champion aloof from his surroundings is the survival instinct and the motive. Geeta and her national champion sister Babita (Suhani Bhatnagar, Sanya Malhotra) know they have got into wrestling with a mission. Win is the only way forward.

Chapter 4: Respect

You hear a roar before witnessing the frothy sea, a metaphor for Geeta and Babita’s quest to be at the crest of wrestling. Daler Mehndi belts out the Dangal title song right here and you feel a similar goosebumps moment that you felt in Rang De Basanti, Lagaan and Chak De India.

Dangal is probably Aamir Khan’s best performance till date. (YouTube)

But nothing can be so perfect, so a villain has to be devised. It’s a fictional account, but a good story is never complete without a strong antagonist. If it was the society in the first half, the wrestling federation takes it over in the second. It gets a bit preachy. But it doesn’t matter: Mahavir and his girls have already won the bout.

This could be Aamir’s best performance till date. Yes, even better than Lagaan. A man making his daughters chase his dream. He cries, frowns, gets angry, looks old and tired, but is definitely one of us. When he shakes his head helplessly, you see a father in him. When he gets into a brawl, he is the brother you always depended on. When he wants to see you win, you know you have to perform. It’s not just his pride, it’s yours as well.

Review-1

Aamir Khan -- the name is synonymous with dedication, perfection and qualitative cinema… His films have set new benchmarks at the ticket windows: GHAJINI was the first Hindi film to gross Rs 100 cr… 3 IDIOTS created a sensation when it crossed Rs 200 cr mark [it was the first Hindi film to cross the magical figure]… PK, the highest grosser to date in the domestic market [Hindi films], was also the first film to cruise past Rs 300 cr…

Obviously, DANGAL carries colossal expectations on its shoulders. The last biggie of the year 2016 is also expected to bail out the industry, since 2016 hasn’t been kind to Hindi cinema. The biz is at an all-time low, with most films sinking faster than Titanic.

Let’s clarify a pertinent doubt before I proceed ahead… DANGAL is *not* similar to SULTAN. There’s a world of a difference between the two films that eye the same sport: Wrestling. SULTAN was a work of fiction, with focus on the love story, while DANGAL is based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained his daughters Geeta and Babita and made them world class wrestlers. So there!

2016 has witnessed stories based on real-life characters/incidents. In addition, films soaked in reality, generally speaking, take the realistic route without bowing to market diktats or over-stretching realities. DANGAL stays true to the material, yet its efficient storyteller Nitesh Tiwari along with the team of writers [story idea: Divya Rao; writers: Nitesh Tiwari, Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain, Nikhil Mehrotra] ensures that the film connects with every segment of moviegoers. Besides, the writers stay away from the familiar and tried-and-tested tropes to woo Aamir’s legion of fans, which is credible.

DANGAL is a flawless piece of work -- it’s captivating, unpredictable, spellbinding, entertaining and never overstays its welcome [run time: 2.41 hours]. Most importantly, DANGAL is seeped in Indian ethos. The highs and lows, the triumphs and failures, the laughter and heartbreak… you smile, you laugh, you weep, you cheer, you feel ecstatic… DANGAL encompasses it all adroitly, with the finale leaving you exhilarated.

The plot: Mahavir Singh Phogat [Aamir Khan] is a wrestler whose sole dream is to win gold for India in the sport of wrestling and since he is unable to do so himself, he decides that he will train his son to become a champion. However, Mahavir is blessed with daughters and feels his dream of winning a medal for India lies shattered.

One day, Mahavir gets to know that his young daughters have had an altercation with neighbourhood boys and bashed them black and blue. That’s when he realises that his dream of winning a gold medal for the country in wrestling could be achieved by his daughters. Mahavir decides to train his young daughters into world class wrestlers.

The girls are reluctant initially and find it tough to cope with the gruelling training sessions, but soon become proficient in the sport. Will Geeta and Babita manage to fulfil their father’s dream?

After having directed CHILLAR PARTY and BHOOTHNATH RETURNS, Nitesh Tiwari delivers his most accomplished work so far. Most films take a long time to come to the point, but the middle and final acts of DANGAL are as attention-grabbing and enticing as its first act. Tiwari deserves brownie points for narrating the story with flourish and the message that the film conveys resonates loud and clear, without getting preachy at any point. The narrative style is simplistic, yet solid and that’s what catches your eye.

Review-2

Emotions have always been the mainstay of Aamir Khan’s films and DANGAL is no exception. They are genuine and relatable. Besides, there’s a strong emotional connect as DANGAL depicts the delicate relationship shared by a father and his daughters most realistically. The drama is spot-on and the emotional quotient is poignant and heartrending. The penultimate moments take the  film to an all-time high, imparting the sheen and sparkle that it deserves.

Pritam contributes a couple of winning melodies that compliment the goings-on delightfully. ‘Haanikaarak Bapu’, ‘Dhaakad’, ‘Gilehriyaan’ and the title track are already well-liked and the best part is, they have been smartly integrated into the proceedings. The background score is effectual and enhances the impact of the drama. The DoP [Setu] deserves tremendous praise. The frames do complete justice to the vision of the director. Dialogue empowers the film wonderfully and at places, are clap-worthy.

The wrestling sequences are superbly executed. Be it the training sessions or the  dhobi-pachhad s or vanquishing the opponents in the  akhada  and in the ring, it’s a delight to watch these sequences on screen. Will surely evoke whistles and applause. Editing [Ballu Saluja] is razor-sharp and watertight. There’s no room for restlessness or boredom here.

DANGAL is, without a shred of doubt, an Aamir Khan show all the way. The supremely skilled actor returns after a hiatus [PK] with yet another sterling act that doesn’t miss a beat. He takes giant strides as an actor and gives the film the much-needed power. His expressions, body language and the much-talked-about transformation from a fit and fine young wrestler to a pot-bellied, middle-aged father speak volumes. Another commanding performance that needs to be highlighted is that of Sakshi Tanwar. She compliments Aamir’s character marvellously, displaying the varied emotions seamlessly.

Both, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra inject freshness to their respective characters. Fatima is fantastic as Aamir’s daughter, who makes her father and nation proud of her achievements. She is in top form. Ditto for Sanya, who makes her debut with DANGAL. The ease with which she portrays her role is applaud-worthy. As a matter of fact, the relationship that Fatima and Sanya share with their on-screen parents [Aamir and Sakshi] seems straight out of life and identifiable.

The actors who portray their younger parts -- Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar -- excel. Frankly, one is so invested in the characters that it makes it easy to root for them as they go from strength to strength during the course of the film.

Aparshakti Khurrana is an actor to watch out for. Enacting the part of Aamir's nephew, the youngster not only contributes immensely to some lively and wonderful moments, but also delivers a first-rate performance. Ritwik Sahore [Aparshakti's younger part] is equally efficient. Girish Kulkarni [coach] is, again, a hugely competent actor, who shines in his part. Vivan Bhathena, in a cameo, is perfect.

On the whole, DANGAL is a masterpiece. A terrific film that stays in your heart and remains etched in your memory much after the screening has concluded. A brilliant film that restores your faith in Hindi cinema. Actually, it won’t be erroneous to state that DANGAL is the finest film to come out of the Hindi film industry in a long, long time and mark my words, it will be remembered as a classic in times to come. It blends drama, emotions, sportsmanship and patriotism extraordinarily… the icing on the cake being Aamir Khan’s towering act. This rich-in-merits film has a major advantage too -- the holidays ahead [Christmas and New Year] -- which will ensure a glorious run at the ticket counters. A must, must watch!

Dangal movie review: Aamir Khan proves why he is the sultan of great Indian cinema

Dangal sees aamir khan as wrestler mahavir singh phogat, who trained his daughters geeta and babita phogat who went on to win medals for india in wrestling. will dangal make an impact on the box office here is our dangal movie review..

Listen to Story

Aamir Khan in a still from Dangal

Dangal, starring Aamir Khan in the lead role as wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, is the big Christmas release this year. How good or bad is the Nitesh Tiwari-directed film? Here is our Dangal movie review .

Dangal Cast: Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar, Aparshakti Khurrana

Dangal Director: Nitesh Tiwari

A middle-aged, overweight Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) challenges his elder daughter Geeta Phogat (Fatima Sana Shaikh) to a wrestling match after she calls his 'technique' outdated. She lives in the National Sports Academy (NSA) in Patiala and swears by her 'national-level' coach's training, not her father's time-tested akhada lessons. Geeta defeats dad Mahavir in the face-off, telling him ' kuch toh farak hove ' in his technique and that of her coach. As a panting Mahavir gathers the rest of his face, we see a father's sorrow at seeing his daughter change.

Dangal is the story of Mahavir Singh Phogat from Balali in Haryana. The wrestler is consumed by the desire to see his son 'win gold' for the country. But as fate would have it, he has four children but all daughters. When his young daughters Geeta (Zaira Wasim) and Babita (Suhani Bhatnagar) beat up the neighbour's sons for calling them names, Mahavir sees there's fight in them.

" Gold toh gold hota hai; chhora lave ya chhori ." A gold is a gold; whether a son brings it or a daughter.

Thus begins the gold quest of this father. But he has to wrestle the system, the society and its centuries-old prejudices before his daughters can wrestle. The best a girl could prepare for is ' chakki-chauka-jhaaru-pocha ', not ' kushti '. So much so that Geeta and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) start with wrestling boys, because women's wrestling isn't a sport. Not, until his girls go on to win.

Director Nitesh Tiwari, backed by Aamir Khan, brings alive Mahavir's solo battle against societal norms. Dangal credits Nitesh Tiwari, Piyush Gupta, Shreyas Jain and Nikhil Meharotra as its writers. In the writing lies the strength of Dangal. Aamir Khan literally lives Mahavir Singh Phogat. From the chiselled young wrestler to the greying middle-aged father, he carries the story on his shoulders, with ample help from Sakshi Tanwar who plays his wife and reel daughters.

Tiwari carefully chooses what to show on screen, sifting through the life of the Phogat sisters and their superhero father. He is careful enough to gloss over the controversial bits about the wrestling federations. Everything else, the fights, emotional turmoil, the father-daughter tiffs, take centre-stage in Dangal. So while Tiwari uses every single trope in the book of Bollywood sports films, he does it with a freshness and expertise seldom seen. There is a strong nationalism angle mixed with its feminist message, peppered with rustic humour and tears, if one is easily moved. Then there's the National Anthem to take care of the rest. This should appease the right rabble-rousers who Aamir has regular run-ins with.

Yes, Dangal is a crowd-pleaser. But it also has stellar performances and an engaging story-telling. Aamir is compelling in his role of Mahavir. He annoys you as much as he does his daughters with his strictness as the ' haanikarak bapu '. He also gets you misty-eyed when he realises his daughter has gone astray. He makes you root for him when he trains Geeta against the diktat of the National Sports Academy, and makes you hoot along with him when his daughter takes on her competitors. All cliched yet entertaining.

While Aamir is in the driver's seat in Dangal, Fatima pushes the vehicle forward. Her months of training are visible on screen. In the slo-mo sequences, Fatima is like a leopard. The wrestling scenes are choreographed so well, they look close to real.

Sanya Malhotra doesn't have a lot to do apart from cheering for her sister from the audience. Child actors Zaira and Suhani hold their own in this motley cast with a heavyweight like Aamir at the top. Aparshakti Khurrana, narrator and Mahavir's nephew, gets a lot of laughs.

Pritam's music is used as a narrative device, and the songs don't affect the pace. Apart from Gilheriyaan and the title track, Dangal, no other track stands out because they are more part of the story than songs.

Drop everything and watch Dangal this weekend. Welcome back to the big screen, Aamir Khan. The two-year wait has been totally worth it.

'Saala' movie review: A solid yet preachy gangster drama

SD Manipaul’s Saala

Using a voiceover-heavy introduction scene to establish a crime universe is a well-trodden path, and debutant director SD Manipaul’s  Saala  is no different. The good news is that it is a fairly neat setup about a gang war revolving around bars. We have Saala (debutant Dheeran) and his father figure Guna (Aruldoss) on one side and Thangadurai (Charles Vinoth, who has a singular-but-effective stock expression throughout) on another. We are in North Chennai, the runner-up destination for violence in Tamil cinema, behind Madurai. The characters look their parts, and the locality is shot well. Ravindranath Guru is the cinematographer, and his camera uses very little filtering, making the frames feel believable. The setup lays the foundation for a gritty, epic gangster drama.

The not-so-good news is that  Saala  makes very little use of this setup. We’re parallely introduced to Punitha (Reshma Venkatesh), an anti-alcohol activist, and we spend a lot of time seeing her speak about the ills of drinking. There is evidently a great deal of research that has gone into  Saala , but this research doesn’t come out organically. Writing a social activist character is never easy, and most of Punitha’s dialogues are either data points or advice to others. Reshma herself, though, plays the part with conviction, bringing a sense of sincerity to Punitha.

The narrative threads do not come together coherently, and instead, we get a lot of jokes and mass moments. I understand the need to commercialise a serious story to make it palatable to a larger audience. However, the jokes are mostly based on someone’s physical appearance, and the mass moments with Saala  don’t really fit in well with the narrative, especially since he seems almost like a side character in the proceedings.  Saala ,  the film, needed to have given way more screen time to Saala, the protagonist. We are shown acts of kindness and magnanimity by him, but it's difficult to understand why he does these things and how they make him feel. There is little personality or dimension to his character, and as a result, the emotions don't hit when the stakes get high.

There are many surprising moments, such as what happens to three teenagers who fantasise about getting their hands on alcohol, or how an accident takes place. Manipaul shows great potential in staging these unexpected splurts of shock. There’s also an amusingly good level of detailing given to a lot of events, like a bar owner sprinkling beer on its floor during its opening ceremony (after all, it is his sacred water), or the way a murder is planned. But these interesting ideas are always bogged down by scenes about how alcohol is harmful in every way.

The film loses momentum in its second half. We get big educational speeches and unnecessarily long scenes, and the gang war is never explored to its full potential. We get extremely graphic visuals to hammer down the message (what passes for a U/A rating with the Censor Board seems bafflingly unclear with every passing week). The impact of a tragedy becomes more shocking than saddening since the emotional threads aren’t convincingly established. Perhaps the makers wanted to avoid camera-facing preaching, but what we end up getting is still very direct, on-the-face messaging.

The intention is appreciable, and there’s always something intriguing going on. But the film needed to have been more tightly knit.  Saala  is still very watchable and truly thought-provoking at times. I just wish it had been fiercer and more focused.

  6. Dangal review: wrestle like a woman
