A Node Overhaul Scheme for Energy Efficient Clustering in Wireless Sensor Networks

The research offered a node overhaul strategy that maintains uniform size clusters with no overlap while simultaneously achieving load balancing and energy economy. When appropriate, the suggested approach refurbishes the original clusters based on a second-best option cluster head after forming the first clusters. In comparison to previous simulated methodologies, the findings produced thus far demonstrate a significant improvement in network longevity and node mortality rate.

An Improved Energy Efficient Clustering Protocol to Prolong the Lifetime of the WSN-Based IOT

The research proposed an increased energy efficient clustering protocol (IEECP) to increase the lifetime of WSN-based IoT devices. There are three sections in the proposed IEECP. The optimal number of clusters is first determined for the overlapping balanced clusters. Then, using a modified fuzzy C-means algorithm together with a system to reduce and balance the energy consumption of the sensor nodes, balanced-static clusters are constructed. Finally, by rotating the CH function across cluster members using a new CH selection-rotation algorithm that includes a back-off timing mechanism for CH selection and a rotation mechanism for CH rotation, cluster heads (CHs) are selected at ideal places.

LEACH Protocol Enhancement for Increasing WSN Lifetime

The reduction of packet delay time was suggested as a novel strategy for improving WSN in terms of network lifetime and data transmission time. The suggested algorithm's simulated outcome was contrasted with the fundamental LEACH procedure with fixed parameters. In terms of network lifespan, the suggested method outperformed the fundamental LEACH.

Deep Learning Based Parametric Model for V2V Communication System

The other vehicle's distance from the system's camera-equipped Zigbee pair and ultrasonic sensor was measured. The receiver will receive an alert command from zigbee and a mail alert with the image that was captured if the distance is less than the threshold value. The receiver is then alerted. Using a Raspberry Pi at the transmitter and an Arduino at the receiver, this technology implements vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

Virtex 7 FPGA Implementation of 256 Bit Key AES Algorithm with Key Schedule and Sub Bytes Block Optimization

In the work, a 256-bit AES algorithm that is well optimised for area and power in key schedule and sub bytes blocks was suggested. The S-box block was reused to achieve the optimization. Internal operations of the algorithm using the new technique are 32-bit operations rather than 128-bit operations. The suggested approach makes use of slice registers to reduce space while enabling pipelined use of the same hardware.

ECE 188 Senior Capstone Projects

The Capstone Project three-course series gives Electrical and Computer Engineering students the opportunity to put their education into practice. Students, working in small teams, design, build, and present a challenging engineering design project. The design challenges, of which each team selects one to tackle, are proposed and supported by UCSB faculty research groups or by industry. Projects typically involve design and implementation of both hardware and software systems. The projects span a variety of topics in the field of electrical and computer engineering, including for example consumer electronics, embedded systems, control systems and circuits, image processing, AI / machine learning, biomedical devices, power electronics, energy generation and conversion, sensor networks, electrochemical and biological sensors, and solid-state emitters and detectors.

Student groups integrate the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier coursework to tackle a challenging engineering design project which is proposed and supported by a UCSB faculty research group or by an industry supporter. The project is evaluated through written reports, oral presentations, and demonstrations of performance.

Electrical and Computer Engineering 188A/B/C

Instructors 2023-24: dr. ilan ben-yaacov (188abc).

188A (Fall quarter) - ECE 188A primarily focuses on the initial project design and development stage. After choosing a project, each group begins researching the critical elements of their project, developing a preliminary project plan with a set of preliminary design specifications, and gives a short preliminary presentation to the class describing their projects. Students then continue to refine their plan and begin prototyping and design testing. By the end of the quarter, each group finalizes their project plan and product design specifications, demonstrates a prototype of at least one system/element of their project, and gives a 45 minute presentation detailing (1) The Project Plan, (2) Product Design Specifications, (3) Budget, (4) Prototyping and Testing, and (5) Division of Labor (individual responsibilities).

188B (Winter quarter) - In ECE 188B, the groups continue to develop their products and refine their specifications, begin PCB design (where applicable), and at the end of the quarter demonstrate a second product prototype. Each group also participates in a "Mid-Project Design Review" with their instructors and sponsors in which they provide details on all the work done to date and provide a plan for completion of their project.

188C (Spring quarter) - In ECE 188C, the final quarter of the sequence, students finalize their designs and product specifications, and then assemble and debug their products. At the end of the quarter, each group presents and demos their final product at an ECE annual event.

Detection & Monitoring of Manhole using IoT

At present, accidents mainly occur due to many reasons. In that, accidents due to missing or damaged manholes have been increasing because of improper monitoring. These accidents can cause injuries & also death. To overcome this problem, the proposed system is developed namely detection & monitoring of manhole. This project can be built with a set of sensors for monitoring the cover of the manhole completely so that accidents can be prevented.

This system comprises of a gas cover to detect the emitted gas from the manure systems so that toxicity & internal temperature can also be monitored. A tilt sensor can also be used in this project to specify whether the manhole can tip. As well, a float sensor indicates once the level of water goes beyond a fixed level, then an SMS can be sent to the concerned person through the IoT website. So, the entire manhole updates can be updated within the website.

Drone for Monitoring Mask & Social Distancing for Prevention of COVID

In the middle of 2019 to 2020, many people all over the world have been still affecting by a strong virus namely COVID19, which is an extremely contagious virus. So to protect from the virus, one should wear a mask in the public and maintain social distancing. For that, monitoring and giving regular reminders are also very important for people.

In this proposed system, the drone can be designed to round long distances to monitor the public places to ensure whether the people mask & social distancing is maintaining or not. This drone can be built with a controller that is connected with motors using a high rpm quad-captor for simple control and navigation.

This drone can be controlled through RC for long-range, FP camera for live recording, and a loudspeaker to give warning or scolding offenders. So this drone is very useful in patrolling and monitoring large areas.

RSA Encryption based Wireless Communication Securely using Wi-Fi

The proposed system namely wireless communication through RSA encryption & Wi-Fi allows us to converse wirelessly through safety features. In this project, When the communication between two systems is encrypted through RSA then the data transfer can be done very securely.

The decryption of data can be done using an exact key, or else it will come back with some garbage value. This is a two-way communication system wherever we can send & receiver at both ends. In this project, the Atmega microcontroller is connected using Xbee through an LCD for sending messages & keys. For every system, USB keyboards are used which uses 12V supply.

Once the system gets started then the message can be entered on the system, then the system requests for the password, where the password limit is sixteen characters like alphabets or numbers. When the password is entered then it will transmit the encrypted message to another system. After that, the other system request key to look at the message. Whenever the correct key is entered by the user then it will decrypt or it will display garbage value therefore wireless communication can be secured.

IR Wireless Underwater Communication System

This project implements a communication system underwater using IR. This system is used for wireless communication of messages through the water. The proposed system is an extremely inexpensive alternative to long heavy physical wires that run through seas, rivers and require large costs for laying those wires and their maintenance.

This project uses an IR transmitter & receiver, microcontrollers, and an LCD. Every system includes a keyboard to enter the messages. In this project, two water barrels are used for demonstrating this system through IR signals.

The system includes an acknowledgment receipt communication that is transmitted reverse from the circuits of receiving to the transmitting on communication receipt. So, efficient communication can be done in between two circuits wirelessly.

Communication System based on RF Secure Coded

This project allows the users to send codes that are confidential by entering messages using the keyboard of the computer throughout RF transmitters. The code which is transmitted can be received by the RF receiver so that message can be maintained confidentially.

This project is used in different applications for secret communication like the military, government sector, etc. The user enters a secret code through a PC keyboard. After that, it can be processed through the microcontroller and delivers to the end of the receiver. At the receiver side, the RF receiver is connected using a code as well as a display. The message can be visible for the user whenever he enters the correct password. Whenever he enters the correct code then the message can be displayed on an LCD.

Communication System from PC to PC

This project is used to design a wireless communication system. By using this system, communication among two computers can be done wirelessly through 2.4GHz trans-receiver units. The proposed system is applicable incorporate to communicate with employees as well as managers.

In this project, a set of transceiver modules with 2.4 GHz frequency is used for bidirectional communication in real-time. Once the user begins a chat then a buzzer is employed to notify. The personal computers are connected through a set of transceiver modules using a DB9 connector & serial data cord. A protocol like RS232 is used in between the modules whereas the PC is used for communication.

Zigbee & Touchscreen based Assistance for Illiterates & Dumb in Airline

This project is used to implement an assistance system based on touch screen technology for dumb as well as illiterate people who travel in the airline for requesting different services like tea, food, coffee, drinks, etc. In this project, the Zigbee protocol is used to communicate between the interface as well as the control unit. Here, microcontrollers are used for both the transmitter & receiver segments.

Communication of Network Monitoring System

This project implements a complete system to provide information regarding the local network on the campus. In this project, the software mainly focuses on administrative duty by allowing the administrator of the local network to sight the whole network arrangement to achieve real-time monitoring and client control to discover traffic of LAN & detection of failure. He can communicate with the clients to ensure the complaints listed by them. The password of the system can also be changed by the administrator to ensure security within the network

The administrator checks all the machines within the network & configurations of the system. He checks the login time, log-off time, date, etc. He can send messages through online to the systems within the network. For all the users, a call registration facility can be provided so that complaints, as well as requests of the users, can be registered. The administrator checks the complaints and gives replies to them.

IoT based Monitoring System for Weather

This project implements a monitoring system for weather using IoT. The proposed system assists you to recognize the incorporation of sensors to the IoT device. This project develops an electronic device to detect the changes within humidity or temperature & sends updates toward the user from a distant location. Further, this project can be implemented by programming to send an e-mail as well as SMS to the user to give an update in a fixed value. The main components used in this project are the DHT sensor, Wi-FI module, and Arduino Uno.

RFID based Automation System for Library

The proposed system implements an automation system for the library using RFID. This project can be built with ARM7 & LPC2148 microcontrollers. This technology is mainly used to identify the books and persons in the library depending on their unique RFID tag number

Also, the process of this system information can be done using the microcontroller and sends to the database of the PC to accumulate & maintain the record regarding the student. The information of the student when he takes the book & returns the book can be recorded in the software which is developed in Embedded C language.

Arduino based DIY Ventilator for Covid Pandemics by Sensing Blood Oxygen

Generally, the lungs of human beings work through reverse pressure that is produced by the reduction motion of the diaphragm to suck in air for breathing. From a ventilator, an opposing action is used to pump up the lungs through pumping type motion. For every minute, the mechanism of the ventilator should deliver ten to thirty breaths by adjusting the volume of air pushed toward the lungs in every breath.

The ventilator should check the level of blood, oxygen & pressure of exhaled lung to keep away from unstable air pressure. The ventilator system is mainly developed through Arduino. This project uses sensors like blood oxygen & sensitive pressure for monitoring the patient & displays the parameters on a small monitor. This system can be driven through an Arduino controller for achieving preferred results & helps the patients in emergency conditions like the COVID epidemic.

Protection System of Industry using GSM

Day by day n industries, the number of accidents has increased because of manual and human errors. To overcome this issue, a project like industrial protection system using GSM is used to detect temperature, smoke & light to track the accidents.

Whenever the machine’s temperature goes above the fixed level then the system detects. If the temperature goes above the fixed level then it is a malfunction indication. In this project, a temperature sensor is used for detecting the accident and when the malfunction otherwise machine loads are increased then it indicates because of the smoke. This can be dete3cted through smoke detectors. A light sensor is used to detect the light once any flash or spark occurs because of the malfunctions.

The inputs of these sensors are given to the microcontroller to process the data constantly. Whenever the warning signal is generated from the sensors then the microcontroller gives the signal to a GSM & sends an SMS to the concerned person to give the warning.

Alerting System of Trains through Wireless Red Signal

In transportation systems, railway networks are the biggest worldwide. But the handling of these networks is complicated due to a lot of junctions as well as huge signals on fixed distances for handling the moving train.

The train driver has to check the red signals for every time to move forward. So checking the signals constantly is extremely hard for the driver. Here, the proposed system overcomes this problem like an alerting system to give an alert to the train driver whenever a red signal at the forefront. This project uses RF technology. Once a signal changes to red, then it locates on an RF transmitter that transmits RF signals to give an alert regarding a red signal.

At present, every train uses a receiver on it. Once the receiver reaches the range of the RF Tx, then it gets the input & transmits it to the microcontroller. After that, the microcontroller processes the information to give an alert to the driver regarding the red signal ahead of it.

Wireless Video and Audio Signal Transmitter

This project is used to implement a wireless transmitter. This system includes a video signal transmitter and audio signal transmitter which work by using the FM frequency. By using this system, audio and video signals can be transmitted over a particular distance toward an FM tuner.

The proposed system is mainly used to tracking the animal’s exact location in the national parks or wildlife reserves. This system uses two modems like a GPS & GSM to track the location of animals. In this project, a modified interface & four control strategies were developed to make a PWC which is known as a powered wheelchair through an outside TDS prototype. A hall sensor is used to change the output voltage based on the magnetic field.

In this project, the sensor works like an analog transducer so by using an identified magnetic field, the Hall plate distance from the sensor can be determined. The control system includes a microcontroller and a Hall Effect sensor. The Arduino LEDs are arranged in the light box, which will receive the sound signal from surroundings and produce light effects.
  • Specialized Umbrella : The specialized umbrella is an Arduino based project which will use LEDs and speakers to generate visual effects and sound effects. The IR distance measuring sensor is arranged in the umbrella to measure the distance when it is approaching to someone and then the LEDs will glow to produce light effects and the speakers around the umbrella will sound an alarm.

In the 1950s Popular Electronics published an article for constructing what was then a rudimentary computer game. It consisted of 21 lights with a ‘player’ button and a ‘machine’ button. A player,,could light 1, 2, or 3 lamps, the “machine:” could then also light 1, 2, or 3, lamps, each taking turns. The object of the game was to avoid being forced into lighting the last, or 21st lamp The “machine” would invariably win.. It worked on the principle that within the number 21, there are 5 groups of 4, with 1 left over. The secret was that whichever the “player” chooses (1,,2, or 3), the machine will always chose a number that adds up to 4. ( If the “player” chooses 1,, -the “machine” chooses 3,. If the “player chooses 2,,,the “machine” will choose 2.. If the “player” chooses 3, the , “machine will choose 1) The combination always adds up to 4. The original game used a mechanical ‘stepping’ relay and ordinary pilot lamps. I am looking for someone to take this on as a project using LEDs and processors. (Arduino maybe?) Will be glad to answer any questions.

Guide to The Master’s in Communication Capstone Project

Types of Capstone Projects

Independent capstone projects, capstone course, group capstone projects, portfolio and reflection projects, internship capstone.

Many master’s in communication programs that focus on building students’ practical skills and leadership capabilities within communication sectors such as public relations, advertising and marketing, corporate and organizational communication, and even political communication and campaigning require a capstone project as students’ culminating experience. Unlike traditional theses, which are common for academic and research-oriented master’s in communication programs and have a formal, multi-chapter structure, capstone projects vary widely across programs and often afford students a great deal of flexibility to be creative in their research and final deliverable.

There is substantial variance between how master’s in communication programs design their applied capstone project option. For some programs, the capstone is an independent research-based or industry-centric endeavor that students complete individually while under the guidance of a committee (similar to how students complete a traditional thesis). Other programs, in contrast, may have a dedicated capstone project course wherein students meet project benchmarks that they discuss in class, and also benefit from their instructor’s guidance and peer feedback. Additionally, there are group project capstone experiences where students are divided into teams and tackle one or a variety of projects that aim to integrate all the concepts and skills that they have learned during their enrollment in the program.

Added to this diversity amongst program capstone experiences is the diversity of students’ interests, their professional and academic backgrounds, and whether they are working full-time or part-time while pursuing their graduate degree. Students who are working and want to integrate what they have learned in their program directly into their workplace might complete their capstone project with their current employer. On the other hand, students who have minimal professional experience or who wish to change industries might find an organization or complete a project based off of their own interests, with the intention of featuring their capstone project as a centerpiece of their portfolio when applying for jobs.

This Guide to the Capstone Project is designed to help current and prospective students of master’s in communication programs understand the depth and breadth of possibilities for their capstone project. It features detailed descriptions of common types of capstone project options, as well as insights from faculty members and directors of master’s in communication programs nationwide who were interviewed as part of our Faculty Interview Series .

Despite the variance in capstone project options described above, there are several major categories in terms of general types of projects that students can undertake. From independent projects to professional portfolios and client-centric group projects, there are choices that suit every student’s interests and goals.

The independent project, one of the most common capstone experience options, grants students significant autonomy in crafting their final deliverable. The student works with his or her advisor and committee to determine a project topic that is tailored to the student’s academic interests and career goals. These independent projects can be created specifically for a real industry client, or can be designed around a hypothetical client in some cases. Examples of independent projects include an advertising campaign for an agency, an organizational communication plan for a corporation, or a comprehensive fundraising awareness strategy for a non-profit organization. Students may also have the option to complete an artistic or creative final project, such as writing a play, filming a documentary, or choreographing a dance.

The process to successfully completing the independent capstone project is quite similar to that of the traditional thesis , in that students select a committee of faculty whose research expertise aligns with the topic of their project. Students then conduct their research and complete their final deliverable with close guidance and feedback from their faculty advisor and committee.

Hye-ryeon Lee, Ph.D. the Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Communicology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, explained her program’s applied capstone project experience in an interview. “The applied project is very flexible in terms of what [students] can do. […] For example, a student is currently in the process of writing a book as her applied project. Another student developed a volunteer training program for the Make a Wish Foundation. This student talked to the administrators, staff and volunteers of the Foundation to develop a thorough understanding about their operation. She then designed and delivered a training program for new volunteers for the Foundation.”

While independent projects are more flexible in terms of their structure and topic, relative to the master’s thesis, they still require a substantial amount of research and are just as rigorous as theses. Students completing a capstone project use the same research methodologies as those who complete a thesis, but instead of applying their findings to conclusions that contribute to the scholarly literature, they use their insights to directly impact an organization or to design a final product that that is more applied or creative in nature.

Michael B. Goodman, Ph.D., Director the Master of Arts in Corporate Communication at The City University of New York’s Baruch College, explained how this program’s applied project uses academically rigorous communication theories and research methodologies. “Similar to the thesis, students are expected to employ and integrate the theories, communication management practices, and methods that they learn in the program to their research and final product. Students who choose this option are also required to present their results at a professional colloquium,” he noted.

The flexibility of the capstone project allows students to bring in topics from their professional or personal lives. Porter Shreve, Director of Administration for the University of San Francisco’s Master of Arts in Professional Communication, explained how many students in the program use the capstone as a way to examine and address sociocultural issues. “Since we are located in San Francisco near the heart of Silicon Valley, tech development and its reshaping of human communication are very much on our students’ minds,” he said, “I had one student who completed a video-based capstone about women muralists in San Francisco’s Mission District and their struggles with gender discrimination. […] We had [another] student who worked at a successful artificial intelligence startup, and he decided to tie his capstone to projects he had undertaken in the AI field.”

Porter Shreve also emphasized the important role that communication theory and research methodologies play in the capstone project, regardless of selected topic or deliverable. “While students can bring the applied into their capstone projects, their work typically utilizes academic research methodologies such as quantitative and qualitative data gathering and analysis,” he said.

Oftentimes, students use the independent project as an opportunity to create a product that will feature prominently in their portfolio once they graduate. Coy Callison, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for the College of Media and Communication at Texas Tech University (TTU), explained how one of the students of TTU’s Master of Arts in Mass Communication created a project that directly contributed to her securing a public relations management position. “[Our student] developed a crisis communication campaign for one of the local hospitals here in Lubbock, and she dealt directly with how well people at the hospital understood emergency planning,” he recalled, “[S]he put together an extensive campaign that involved all of the constituents from the staff to the nurses, doctors, and vendors. She surveyed all of these teams to learn how they would prefer to receive this information […and] subsequently put together a comprehensive plan that catered to each team, and the hospital was very happy with it.”

After graduating, this student approached a major hospital in Honolulu with her crisis communication plan, which impressed them so much that they created a position for her, and she became the Crisis Preparedness Director. As this example illustrates, the independent project can be a very helpful stepping stone into a new career or promotion at one’s current job.

While some programs have a capstone project option that involves students working largely independently under the guidance of one or more faculty advisors, other programs have students complete their capstone project while enrolled in a capstone course that provides structure, guidance, and feedback. This is relatively common among online master’s in communication programs, and can be particularly advantageous for students who benefit from weekly meetings that hold them accountable for meeting incremental project deadlines. Capstone courses also provide the benefit of peer discussions and feedback in a forum-like setting. Unlike the independent capstone project, which is highly individualized and can be creative or artistic, projects that are completed as part of a capstone course are often more practical and client-focused in nature.

Richard Holberg, Adjunct Instructor and Team Lead for Southern New Hampshire University’s Online Master of Arts in Communication Program, explained how the capstone course that is part of this program provides students with helpful structure and deadlines. “The first week of the course is when students identify what they want that client and campaign to be. As facilitator of the course, it is my job to make sure that their campaign meets the parameters for the program and has a scope that is manageable within the span of the capstone course,” he said, “We also structure in three milestones that students must meet during their time in the course. First students must identify the client and the type of campaign they want to do, and I review all of their proposals. The second milestone requires them to identify what the focus of their campaign is. What’s the communication need or problem that they are trying to solve?”

Capstone courses vary in how they manage the client-student relationship. Some programs require all the students in a capstone course to work on a single project for one client that agrees to partner with the program. Other programs connect students with multiple clients for individualized or small group capstone projects. Still other programs ask students to find their own client but provide guidance and support during the client search process during class sessions and individual mentoring.

Dionne C. Clemons, Ph.D., former Director of the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Public Relations at Trinity Washington University, explained how the capstone course for this program connects students with a wealth of regional clients and partners. “We develop relationships with clients and assign students a client that has strategic communication/PR needs that match what we expect students to demonstrate in their final project,” she explained. Dr. Clemons also noted that one of the advantages of Trinity University’s capstone course is that students connect with a wide variety of clients who can serve as useful professional contacts for students. “Most clients that we align with are partners with Trinity, and they often represent the economy here in DC, meaning that they are management consulting, nonprofit, or government entities,” she added.

Group projects have the advantage of enabling students to take on a project of larger scope than would be possible if they were working individually. Whether completed under the guidance of a faculty advisor or as part of a larger capstone course, group projects also give students the opportunity to demonstrate and hone their teamwork skills while working on an intensive project that mimics the work they will complete in their future jobs. Unlike individual capstone projects which can be industry-focused or creative, and may or may not be client-centric, group capstone projects tend to revolve around an existing client need, such as a marketing campaign for an apparel company, an advocacy initiative for a non-profit organization, or an organizational communication revamp for a corporation.

Janet Steele, Ph.D., who is the Director of George Washington University’s Master of Arts in Global Communication program, explained how this program’s capstone experience is designed to be a team effort. “The capstone is a four-credit group project that students complete over the course of a year. The capstone is handled through the Elliott School of International Affairs,” she said, “At the end of their first year, students meet with a capstone advisor, and decide on their work group. The groups usually consist of three to four students, and together they work with real-world clients on an agreed-upon project. At the end of the program, the group is required to present their project to faculty, and to show us the work they did for their client.”

For some programs, the capstone group project is an opportunity for students to flex their leadership and project management abilities. Arabella Pollack, MBA, who is the Deputy Academic Director of the Master’s in Strategic Communication Programs at Columbia University, explained how Columbia University’s program emphasizes team projects from the beginning in order to prepare students for collaborative work on their capstone.

“Throughout all our other courses there is a lot of project work, lots of teamwork focusing on real-life scenarios, whether it is case studies or hypothetical situations from their current place of employment or other organizations. Students are constantly thinking about how they put the concepts they learn into practice,” she said, “When it comes to the Capstone we take it to another level. We work with real organizations that have a communication challenge they’re tackling. And students work in small teams to address this problem through guided independent study over the course of a semester. This includes conducting their own primary and secondary research. They conduct focus groups, quantitative and fully representative surveys, and other assessments and deep dives into data. They’re constantly working with the sponsor in an almost consulting relationship (though sponsors do not pay for students’ work). At the end of the semester, students present their findings and recommendations to the sponsor.”

Just as some master’s in communication programs require students to take a capstone course for their individual capstone project, some programs that have a group capstone project requirement also incorporate the capstone as part of a larger guided capstone course. As noted above, this is quite common for online master’s in communication programs.

Michael Weigold, Ph.D., who is the Director of Distance Education at the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, explained how the University’s Online Master of Arts in Mass Communication culminates in a capstone class where students are assigned groups and tackle a team project in largely the same way they would do so in an industry setting. “All of the Capstone projects are completed through group work, and this is by design, because all the members of our advisory council have reiterated the importance of people who know how to work optimally in teams,” he said, “During their work on their project, students have the mentorship of the Capstone course instructor.”

Some industry-focused master’s in communication programs require students to complete a portfolio that represents the depth and breadth of their professional skills, experience, and interests. This capstone requirement typically involves students reviewing their work over the course of their enrollment in the program, and selecting assignments from past classes that are representative of the strengths they would like to showcase to potential employers. As a highly industry-focused and functional capstone project, portfolios are typically required to be in online or e-portfolio form (such as a website) for maximum visibility. In addition, most programs with a portfolio capstone also require students to write a reflective essay that synthesizes the concepts, skills, and issues explored during their classes.

Programs tend to vary in terms of their precise parameters for the portfolio. While some programs may be flexible as to what students decide to include, others may have more established requirements to ensure adequate diversity within each student’s portfolio. Sunny Stalter-Pace, Ph.D., the Director of Graduate Studies for Auburn University’s English Department, explained the capstone portfolio requirement for Auburn University’s Master of Technical and Professional Communication. “The portfolio requirements are as follows: a portfolio website of the student’s own design, and which follows best practices for coding, writing, editing, and professional communication ethics; a 2000-word memo that elaborates on the major technical and professional communication issues that the student has discerned based off of his or her coursework, and which makes suggestions as to how to address these issues; five exemplary pieces of print or online content that the student has completed during his or her tenure in the program, accompanied by a 500-word analysis for each of these pieces of content; and an edited resume or curriculum vitae,” she said.

Texas Tech University’s Master of Arts in Technical Communication, on the other hand, has slightly different portfolio requirements. Craig Baehr, Ph.D., Director of this graduate program, outlined the portfolio’s parameters. “The Master of Arts in Technical Communication portfolio is comprised of two key components: learning artifacts and a reflective essay,” he explained, “Students must include three to six artifacts in their portfolio, one of which must be an academic or research paper, while another must be a practical project in technical communication. […] Examples of artifacts students might include in their portfolio include an analytical report or a feasibility study they wrote for a technical reports class, a web-based training module that they developed for the instructional design course, or a visual infographic they developed for the document design or information visualization course.”

The portfolio is an opportunity for students to not only showcase their skills, but to also benefit from mentorship and feedback from their instructors. Frederica Fornaciari, Ph.D., who is the Academic Program Director for the Master of Arts in Strategic Communications at National University, explained how this program’s capstone option is, in many ways, a career workshop course. “During the Capstone Project students reflect upon their chosen career path, analyze the market in their field of choice, and draw the connections between their own learning experience at National University and the skills necessary to successfully enter their career of choice,” she said, “[Students] develop a market analysis for their field of choice, looking at possible job openings, exploring job descriptions, and collecting valuable information about their desired job’s outlook from sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Then, students complete a reflective journal to reflect upon their learning experience at National University, and start drawing connections between their acquired toolkits and current market needs.”

Internship capstone options are somewhat less common than other types of capstone experiences, due to the fact that many industry-oriented master’s in communication programs have students who are already working either full-time or part-time while completing their degree. However, for students who have the weekly availability to complete an internship, this capstone experience option can be very helpful by immersing students in the work settings that interest them and connecting them with potential employers well before they graduate. Examples of graduate internships in communication include working for a local newspaper outlet, interning in the public relations department of a corporation, or working at a marketing agency.

Nadia Kaneva, Ph.D., who is the Director of the Master of Arts in Media and Public Communication Program at the University of Denver, described this program’s internship option as particularly advantageous for students interested in entering industry. “We believe that research and practice must go hand in hand as they work to address real-world problems,” she said, “[Based] on their own goals and interests, students can choose between completing a professional internship, a master’s thesis, or a substantial research paper as a capstone experience. […] Typically, students who wish to pursue a professional career opt for an internship. Our internship program is highly regarded by employers and we have seen many cases where an internship turns into a job offer upon graduation.”

Master’s in communication programs that offer an internship option for the culminating experience may connect students with potential internship sites and supervisors, or require students to identify an internship site on their own. The internship capstone option is often accompanied by an additional requirement that prompts students to reflect on the relevance of their internship work to their master’s program and future career. “At the end of their internships, students submit a paper or a professional portfolio, and complete an exit interview with the department’s Internship Director,” noted Dr. Kaneva.

A Design-Implement Capstone Project in Electronics Engineering

CDIO projects are planned every bachelor year in the curriculum of the Electronic Engineering educational program at Ghent University, Belgium. Students are expected to participate in gradually more demanding projects over the progress of their bachelor years. In this paper, the project in the third bachelor year is presented. This is a capstone project resulting into the bachelor’s dissertation, for which students are required to conceive, design, implement, document and present a technically advanced project.

The students work in teams of three people and select a project presented by their professors at the beginning of the second semester. The projects are linked to the research groups of our department, covering wireless communication, image processing, acoustics, automation, radiofrequency circuit design and general purpose electronics design. Coaching throughout the projects is provided by the professor as well as a number of assistants.

During the first project weeks, students are required to perform an extensive literature review and document their work using the proper references. Additionally a fully detailed functional and technical analysis should be presented in separate chapters of the bachelor’s dissertation text. The functional analysis should be readable to the average user, and does not contain implementation details. The technical implementation is elaborately presented in a separate technical analysis chapter, containing sufficient details to allow reproduction of the implementation.

A full afternoon is reserved for lab work each week. Students generally see their coaches in the lab, but can also contact them outside lab hours. Feedback and communication between students and coaches are very extensive. Regular project meetings are organized, during which the project planning is updated if necessary, setting intermediate deadlines in agreement with the coaches.

The work is disseminated as follows. At the end of the project, the bachelor’s dissertation documents the results and also reflects on them. Accurate scientific reporting and documenting are required throughout the dissertation, including proper references as well as using correct spelling, grammar and language. A poster is also produced by the students, presenting an overview of their work in a structured and visually appealing way. A final presentation, preferably including a demonstration as a proof-of-concept, concludes the project.

Compared to all previous projects in the educational program, the bachelor’s dissertation is characterized by a larger responsibility for the student, supported by much more extensive and complete reporting, including a literature review with proper referencing. Different ways of active learning are included. Considering the grading of the project, not only technical content, but also writing and presentation skills are taken into account.

For the first time in the curriculum, the project offers the students a full product design and development cycle. The project is very successful and motivating for the students. In a regular curriculum, the third bachelor year is followed by a master year, including a master’s dissertation. Therefore the CDIO course discussed in this paper is not only serving as a bachelor program’s capstone project, but is also an excellent preparation to the master’s dissertation and its corresponding more extensive research project.

ECE Capstone

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers the Capstone Design senior level course, which is mandatory for all students. This two semester long course is one of the most challenging, exciting, and successful programs on campus. A number of industrial partners, research institutions, business school in connection to the entrepreneurship program, as well as many other internal and external sources are involved with this course.

The main objective of this course is to provide a multidisciplinary experience, integrating knowledge from the core, intermediate, and advanced courses in electrical and computer engineering. It has a single major course objective with a working project as an output. The course intends to give students experience in finding a satisfactory solution of an open-ended problem, which has more than one solution, and where the solution involves actual hardware that needs to work. The design is carried out in engineering teams.

Project Categories

A project involving each team gives valuable experience in planning, division of work, and maintaining individual accountability within a framework of group success. The students select projects according to the following three categories: (1) Industry-based capstone design projects, which are sponsored by industry; (2) Faculty-based advanced research projects, which are proposed by faculty through research centers such as CenSSIS, CDSP, etc; and (3) Student-based capstone design projects, which are proposed by the innovative ideas stemming from the students themselves.

Project Teams

Every year 20 teams are involved with fascinating projects trying to accomplish their design tasks. Each team consists of 4-6 members with expertise in hardware, software, signal processing, and system knowledge including communications and control systems. Constructed from solid devices, microprocessor, sensors, and other electronic components (all purchased within a specified budget), more than 80% of the projects are successfully completed. This is how our senior undergraduate students taking on challenging, hands-on engineering capstone design projects, building useful state of the art systems, guided by the faculty advisors. The students perform the design tasks in the capstone design laboratory, which is accessible 24 hours. A design competition is the final stage of this program in which a number of expert judges from the industry are invited to evaluate the best three projects.

A natural outcome of capstone experience is to introduce a strategy for reliable integration of research and curriculum development. It becomes possible to link multidisciplinary projects that integrate new; state-of-the-art research advances in emerging technology areas into upper-level undergraduate engineering curricula. A major objective is to involve faculty and researchers with the capstone program. In addition, this interaction is a motivating factor for our students to pursue graduate studies, to enhance their skills, and to facilitate employment opportunities.
