جس زمانے میں مغلیہ سلطنت کا چراغ ٹمٹما رہا تھا اور مشرقی تہذیب کا آفتاب غروب ہونے کو تھا اس وقت شعر و ادب کی دنیا میں چند ایسی شمعیں روشن ہوئیں جنہوں نے آنکھوں کو خیرہ کر دیا۔مرزا اسداللہ خان غالب اسی عہد کے سب سے نامور شاعر ہیں۔ان کے دم سے اردو شاعری کی دنیا میں ایک انقلاب پیدا ہوگیا۔پروفیسر آل احمد سرور کے قول کے مطابق”غالب سے پہلے اردو شاعری دل والوں کی دنیا تھی، غالب نے اسے ذہن دیا”انھوں نے غزل میں نئے موضوعات اور نئے مضامین داخل کرکے اس کا دامن وسیع کردیا۔

مرزااسداللہ خان نام اور غالب تخلص تھا۔1796ء میں آگرہ میں پیدا ہوئے۔مشہور محقق مالک رام نے “تذکرہ ماہ و سال” میں غالب کی تاریخ پیداءش 27 دسمبر 1797ء بمطابق 8 رجب 1212ھ لکھی ہے اور یوسف حسین خان بھی “غالب اورآھنگ غالب” میں ان کی تاریخ ولادت 27 دسمبر 1797ء بتاتے ہیں۔جبکہ رام بابو سکینہ “تاریخ ادب اردو” میں مرزا کا سال ولادت 1796ء قرار دیتے ہیں۔مرزا غالب کا خاندانی سلسلہ بقول رام بابو سکینہ”ابیک ترکمانوں، جو وسط ایشیا کے رہنےوالےتھے، سےملتا ہے جو اپنے آپ کو سلاطین سلجوقی کی وساطت سے فریدوں کی نسل میں سمجھتے تھے۔

مرزا کے دادا سب سے پہلے ہندوستان آئے اور شاہ عالم بادشاہ کے دربار میں عزت پائی۔غالب کے والد عبداللہ بیگ خان نے ایک متلون زندگی بسر کی۔کچھ دنوں دربار اودھ میں رہے پھر حیدرآباد آگے جہاں نواب نظام علی خان بہادر کی سرکار میں 300 سوار کی جمیت میں ملازم رہے۔کئی برس بعد گھر آئے اور الور کے راجہ بختاور سنگھ کی ملازمت اختیار کی اور یہاں کسی سرکش گھڑی کی لڑائی میں مارے گئے۔ڈاکٹر یوسف حسین خان کے بیان کے مطابق وہ راجگڑھ میں ہی دفن ہوئے جس کا ذکر بقول انکے غالب نے کیا ہے۔راجہ بختاور سنگھ نے عبداللہ بیگ خان کے دونوں لڑکوں مرزا اسداللہ خان غالب اور مرزا یوسف بیگ خان کے گزارے کے لیے روزینہ مقرر کردیا اور دو گاؤں ان کے نام کر دئیے۔

مرزا عبداللہ بیگ کے انتقال کے وقت غالب کی عمر پانچ سال کی تھی۔ان کے چچا مرزا نصر اللہ بیگ نے جو لاولد تھے، غالب اور ان کے چھوٹے بھائی مرزا یوسف کو اپنی سرپرستی میں لے لیا۔مرزا غالب ابھی صرف نو سال کے ہی تھے کہ ان کے چچا مرزا نصر اللہ بیگ کا بھی انتقال ہو گیا اور اب ان کے نانا خواجہ غلام حسین خان جو کہ فوج کے کمیدان اور آگرہ کے مشہور رئیس تھے،کے یہاں مرزا غالب کی پرورش ہونے لگی۔مرزا غالب کے چچا چونکہ انگریزی فوج میں رسالدار تھے،اس لیے حسن خدمات اور وفاداری کے صلہ میں انگریزی سرکار سے جاگیر بھی پائی تھی اور ان کے انتقال کے بعد مرزا غالب کو انگریزی جاگیر کے عوض سرکار انگلیش سے پینشن بھی ملتی رہی۔

مرزا کا بچپن بقول رام بابو سکینہ”آگرہ میں گزرا جہاں وہ ایک کہنہ مشق استاد شیخ معظم علی سے تعلیم پاتے رہے اور کہا جاتا ہے کہ اسی زمانے میں مشہور شاعر نظیر اکبر آبادی سے بھی کچھ ابتدائی کتابیں پڑھی تھیں۔جب ان کی عمر 14 برس ہوئی تو ہرمز نام کے ایک پارسی سے جو ژندو پاژند کا عالم اور بڑا سیاح تھا، سے فارسی پڑھی”

مرزا غالب کی شادی نواب الہی بخش خان معروف کی بیٹی امراء بیگم کے ساتھ 1810ء میں ہوئی جب مرزا کی عمر محض 13 سال کی تھی۔نواب الہی بخش خان معروف چونکہ شاعر تھے لہذا مرزا غالب کو بھی ادبی ماحول میسر آیا۔مرزا پہلے اسد تخلص کرتے تھے بعد کو غالب ہوگئے۔ان کا بچپن اور لڑکپن کا زمانہ عیش و آرام میں گزرا لیکن شادی کے بعد حالات دگرگوں ہوگئے۔غالب حالات سے مجبور ہو کر دلی منتقل ہوگئے اور پھر ہمیشہ یہیں کے ہو کے رہ گئے۔دلی کی فضا میں بقول رام بابو سکینہ”شاعری گونج رہی تھی،جگہ جگہ مشاعرے ہورہے تھے، شادی بھی ایک مشہور و معروف شاعر کی بیٹی کے ساتھ ہوئی تھی،ان سب اسباب سے نوعمر غالب کی نوخیز طبیعت پر شاعری کا گہرا اثر پڑا”

مرزا غالب ہمیشہ دہلی میں ہی رہے سوائے ایک کلکتہ کے سفر کے جو انھوں نے 1828ء میں کیا تھا،یہ سفر پنشن کی بحالی کی خاطر تھا، وہ پنشن جو ان کو سرکار انگلش کی جانب سے چچا مرزا نصر اللہ بیگ کی جاگیر کی ضبطی کے عوض میں ملتی تھی۔ یہ پنشن گو کہ بحال تو نہ ہوئی تاہم مرزا نے مختلف علاقوں کی سیر کر لی۔بقول رام بابو سکینہ”کلکتہ کے راستے میں مرزا نے لکھنؤ اور بنارس کی بھی سیر کی تھی اور ایک قصیدہ نصیرالدین حیدر شاہ بادشاہ اودھ کے واسطے اور ایک نثر وزیر سلطنت کی مدح میں پیش کی تھی۔آخری تاجدار خود واجد علی شاہ کی سرکار سے بھی 500 روپیہ سالانہ ان کے واسطے مقرر ہوئے تھے مگر دو برس کے بعد جب سلطنت کا تنازعہ پیدا ہوا تو وہ موقوف ہوگئے۔

پنشن کے مقدمے کی ذہنی کوفت کے علاوہ بقول یوسف حسین خان”ایک اور واقع ایسا پیش آیا جس کی وجہ سے انہیں بے آبروئی کا گھاؤ کھانا پڑا جو تھوڑی بہت عزت باقی تھی وہ بھی جاتی رہی۔غالب کو جوانی کے زمانے میں شطرنج کھیلنے کا بڑا شوق تھا۔کچھ بدک کر کھیلا کرتے تھے۔ آہستہ آہستہ اس عادت نے جوا کھیلنے کی لت لگادی۔شراب اور جوئے کا ساتھ دنیا کی ہر تہذیب میں قدیم سے پایا جاتا ہے۔1841ء میں جوئے کی علت میں انہیں سو روپے جرمانے کی سزا ہو چکی تھی اس کے بعد بھی یہ ان کا مشغلہ جاری رہا۔ جب تک محمد مرزاخانی کوتوال شہر تھے،مرزا کو کوئی خطرہ بابت کھیلنے جوئے کے نہ تھا لیکن جب محمد مرزاخانی کی جگہ فیض الحسن تبدیل ہو کر آئے تو نئے کوتوال شہر نے جوئے کی انسداد کے لیے سخت کارروائی عمل میں لائی۔چناچہ مرزا غالب کو جنوں نے اپنے گھر کو جوا کھیلنے کا اڈا بنا رکھا تھا، گرفتار کر لیا گیا اور عدالت فوجداری سے انہیں چھ ماہ قید با مشقت اور دو سو روپے جرمانہ کی سزا ہوگی” کہا جاتا ہے کہ اسی عرصے میں صرف نواب مصطفی خان شیفتہ ہی ان کی خبر گیری کرتے رہے۔1842ء میں غالب کو دہلی کالج میں پروفیسر کے لیے منتخب کیا گیا مگر چونکہ ٹامسن صاحب جو کہ اس وقت سیکرٹری گورنمنٹ تھے،غالب کے استقبال کے لیے نہیں آئیے اس لیے انھوں نے ملازمت قبول نہ کی۔

1849ء میں بادشاہ بہادر شاہ ظفر نے انکو نجم الدولہ دبیر الملک نظام جنگ کا خطاب عطا کیا اور مزید یہ کہ ان کو 50 روپے مہینہ کے صلہ میں “تاریخ خاندان تیموریہ” لکھنے کا بھی حکم دیا۔1854ء میں شیخ ابراہیم ذوق کے انتقال پر غالب بادشاہ حضور کے استاد مقرر ہوئے۔رام بابو سکینہ کے بقول” غدر کے ایام میں بسلسلہ ملازمت اور تقریب شاہی کی مرزا بھی مصائب میں مبتلا ہوگئے تھے۔پنشن بند ہوگئی اور ان کے چال چلن کے متعلق تحقیقات کی جانے لگی اور آخر میں جب پوری صفائی ہوگئی اور یہ بے گناہ ثابت ہوئے تو ان کی پنشن بحال ہوئی اور عزت سابقہ بھی واپس دی گئی۔غالب نوّاب یوسف علی خاں والیئ رامپور کے استاد بھی تھے جو ان کو سو روپے ماہوار بطور پنشن کے عمر بھر دیتے رہے۔غالب کا انتقال 15 فروری 1869ء کو 72 برس چار ماہ بمقام دہلی ہوا اور وہیں دفن ہوئے۔

Syed Jaun Asghar (1931-2002), popularly known as Jaun Elia, was born in Amroha where he received his early education under the guidance of his father, Shafiq Hasan Elia. He acquired the degrees of Adeeb Kamil (Urdu), Kamil (Persian), and Fazil (Arabic). He migrated from India in 1957 and settled in Karachi where he worked at the Ismailia Association of Pakistan supervising writing and compilation from 1963 to 1968. Following this, he remained associated with the Urdu Dictionary Board. He also edited Aalami Digest with Zahida Hena. Jaun Elia was deeply interested in the disciplines of history, philosophy, and religion. This gave a certain touch of otherness to his personality and poetry. His poetry is remarkable for its effortless expression and immediacy of appeal. While he published his first anthology Shaayed (1991) during his lifetime, Other poetry collections Yaani (2003) Gumaan (2004), Lekin (2006), Goyaa (2008), and a book in prose titled Farnood (2008) were published posthumously by his trustworthy companion Khalid Ahmed Ansari. Among these Yaani was initially published by Al Hamd Publishers but they republished it with Khalid's help and with inclusion of 80 additional verses.

Khalid also compiled Jaun's prose work titled 'FARNOOD,' which Jaun had been contributing to various magazines from 1958 until his demise in 2002. Furthermore, Khalid compiled Jaun's epic poem 'RAMOOZ,' consisting of 12 tablets, as well as a book titled "MaiN Ya MaiN" which contains articles about Jaun Elia, written by various individuals, his friends, his acquaintances and various prominent literary figures. This book gives a deep insight about Jaun's life and his works and is a very important document for those who are interested in knowing Jaun Elia more.  Currently, Khalid is working on Jaun's long-awaited poetic collection, titled 'KYUN.'

Jaun had also collected his letters to Zahida Hina to whom he was married but they had separated later. Elia had also translated Kitab-ut-Tawwaseen and Jauhar-e-Salqui by Mansoor Hallaj which remain unpublished. The government of Pakistan honoured him with the prestigious award of excellence for his services to literature.
