Ini Utharam Movie Review: Harish Uthaman stands out in a passable thriller

I found it amusing that an associate of director Jeethu Joseph chose to make his directorial debut with a thriller in which, at one point, a character wonders out loud how another character discovered the actual location where he had buried the bodies.  Ini Utharam boasts a rather intriguing set-up, which we saw in the trailer: A woman walks into a police station to report a murder committed by her. She demands, constantly, to speak to a circle inspector. Very soon, her statement's veracity and sanity are up for scrutiny. We get a moment where Aparna Balamurali goes ballistic when a cop labels her 'insane' after seeing her down some pills. In the same police station, another cop lets everyone know he won't tolerate "violence against women". The first moment doesn't appear forced; the second one does. It's as though the latter's inclusion serves the purpose of delivering a message.

The screenplay of Ini Utharam , too, behaves this way at times. The inclusion of a love song at an early point acts as a major speed-breaker -- it isn't very successful at convincing us of the chemistry of a couple presumably in love. When I want to see a thriller, I expect to be thrilled instead of seeing the tension diffused by something that I wish the makers handled in a more palatable -- meaning less cringe-inducing -- way. Take this week's other theatrical release, Rorschach , for example. It showed that sometimes not bowing to conventions can result in a great thriller. Why this urge to create something that "family" or "Malayali" audiences can connect to?

Fortunately, Ini Utharam picks up pace after that and doesn't stop for unnecessary detours. Of course, it's Aparna's Dr Janaki who lights the fuse; after a point, though, someone else enters the picture -- Harish Uthaman's Tamil-Malayalam-speaking police superintendent Ilavarasan, on whom the spotlight remains for most of the runtime -- so much so that he became, for me, the protagonist of the story. Harish not only gets the film's best lines but also gets photographed in a way that does justice to his character's unpredictable quality. The makers make the best use of Harish's hawk-like eyes and his tall and commanding frame, all of which lend much gravitas to his character.

At one point, Harish's face is framed with one eye in shadows, which registers the portrait of a pirate sporting an eyepatch. That image, to me, represents Ilavarasan in a nutshell. He has a gift for disarming his opponent merely with his words. An early agitation scene has Ilaravasan controlling the mob using methods his subordinates didn't think of. He reveals himself as someone who hates herd mentality; he is all about thinking independently. You can't predict what he will say or do next, a quality which offers a modicum of excitement in several places.

It becomes evident later on that the resolution of Ini Utharam will depend on Janaki's interactions with Ilavarasan, the Circle inspector (Kalabhavan Shajohn), and the Home Minister (Siddique). Although Ini Utharam managed to hold my attention throughout its runtime -- owing to the plot structure and presence of these few talented actors -- I was also bothered by the unremarkable quality of the writing with regard to the past revelations and the actors' lines. With a unique set-up such as this, one expects a backstory that blows our mind, but what we get is a familiar chain of events. But irrespective of this, one keeps watching to see how these characters manipulate events in their favour or someone else's.

While not a complete waste of time, Ini Utharam is not exactly an earth-shattering experience either. If anything, Harish Uthaman, whose imposing, screen-dominating presence closes the film, leaves a strong impression.

Aparna Balamurali's 'Ini Utharam' review: Exploring many sides of vengeance

An intricate web of crime and suspense, 'Ini Utharam', written by Ranjith Unni and directed by Sudheeesh Ramachandran will absorb you completely. The dexterously driven twists all along the narrative will arrest your attention in a story pivoting a case of mysterious killings in a remote high range village.

The story gets onto track with Janaki (Aparna Balamurali) dropping in at a police station at Shantanpara hill range and coffessing to have committed a murder. Though the police personnel there seeks details she remains adamant to meet Circle Inspector Karunan (Kalabhavan Shajohn), who was not present at that moment, to divulge more about the crime.

When the CI faces Janaki ultimately, he downplays her claims as mere rubbish blabbering of a mentally unstable woman and refuses to probe the matter. However, with the entry of media into the scene the police official has no other way but to initiate an investigation and search for the body at the spot where Janaki claims to have buried it. CI Karunan is already a speck in the eye of the natives of Shanthanpara for his vicious activities and wild attitude.

Under the full glare of the public and media, the police make efforts to dig out the body that Janaki claimed to have buried. Now, Janaki makes some statements at the spot that puts the police in a fix before the violent and enraged local people. It's then the Idukki SP (Harish Uthaman) is called in to quell the mob and bring the situation under control. But then the real turmoil for CI Karunan begins.

What's noteworthy about the movie is the uniformity of the tone of the subject throughout the film and the artistry in treatment of sequences, whether it's dialogues or the actions. Even the songs and subtle comic elements in the plot are so skillfully woven into the main fabric that they never disturb the central theme of the story.

However, the background again, plays the villain at times that one might even joke that, 'the characters in the movie were not able to hear each other calling out aloud because of the BGM.' But those are minor flubs which can be overlooked. The tale is an enjoyable thriller that has evolved brilliantly.

Aparna Balamurali has been pitch perfect as a daring, yet naive Janaki. But it's Harish Uthaman who steals the show as a mysterious cop who is hard to be tagged as either good or evil till the climax. Kalabhavan Shajohn too presents a mesmerising performance, though the kind of character he has portrayed here is nothing new.

Siddique, Jayan Cherthala, Shaju, Siddharth Menon, Jaffer Idukki, Chandunath, all of them form the ensemble cast of the movie with their electrifying show of talents. While Ravichandran's camera has captured the mesmerising beauty of the mist and hues of the locales as well as the suspense and heat of the drama, Hesham Abdul Wahab's songs stroke romance. The movie is produced by Varun and Arun under the banner A & V Entertainments.

The movie, 'Ini Utharam' with the tagline 'Every Answer has a Question' concludes in an anti-climax fashion leaving the conundrum for the audience to solve. This might be baffling while leaving the theatres but with a strong plot and an enchanting storyline and even a message 'Ini Utharam' exploring many sides of vengeance stands out as a simple, watchable movie, that is worth your time.

The movie was just about average . Not much of a suspense in it and was predictable for most parts. The initial half an hour of the movie keeps you at the edge of the seat, after that u get a clear idea where the plot is going forward. Aparna balamurali saved this movie from being just another political influence story. Kalabhavan shajon once again delivered his best as a police officer. The one who did the role of superior…

A lady randomly comes to the police station to confess her being a murderer and even telling them what and why she did that and to whom. On the way of building the plot, twists and turns occur dropping our jaws. There's no way I've never heard of this movie before I accidently found it somewhere very unpopular. An underrated movie like " Vetah ". Excellent plots despite the ignorant flaws. Cliffhangers every now and then. Needs more attention for sure.

A Thrilling Ride through Investigation, crime etc . This film was masterfully described in its own style. Mainly The SP character Portrait was brilliant. Personally I found the film was very different from others. The scene where the main plot goes on was particularly a showcasting element. That's it to you watch the film .

‘We Live in Time’: Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh Love, Cry, and Fight Cancer

The two talented leads of “We Live in Time,” despite having excellent chemistry, are no match for the onslaught of maudlin, silly twists in this romantic tragedy.

We Live in Time ’s greatest accomplishment is jamming more sentimental and silly incidents into 107 minutes than any romantic drama in recent memory.

That any of it works is due to the charismatic performances of the charming Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. Yet their genuine chemistry can’t outshine the raft of affectations jostling for attention in Brooklyn director John Crowley’s latest, which just premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival . Pulling on the heartstrings with tug-of-war-grade might, it’s a carpe diem fable that elicits more exasperated eye rolls than tears or laughs.

Of We Live in Time ’s many missteps, perhaps none is as glaring as its decision to chronologically fragment its tale, which hopscotches between the past and present without much care for thematic or narrative logic.

One second Almut (Pugh) is running through the woods, collecting herbs and pine needles for a “Douglas fir parfait” that she wakes partner Tobias (Garfield) to try. The next instance, she’s teaching him the best method to crack an egg. Then, she’s pregnant and having her contractions counted by a studiously efficient Tobias. After which, she’s doubling over in pain and visiting a doctor who informs her that her cancer has returned, requiring an arduous new round of treatment involving chemotherapy and surgery.

In the parking lot following this terrible meeting, Almut tells Tobias that she’s not sure she can go through this process again, and wonders if perhaps it would be better to spend her last 6-8 months treasuring every day with him rather than wasting it on futile life-saving efforts. Even though We Live in Time hasn’t yet made the order of its events totally clear, it’s easy to assume (correctly) that Almut and Tobias are young parents, thereby making this proposal more than a tad implausible (and off-putting). That said, it’s far less preposterous than the couple’s origins.

In a daffy meet-cute that’s meant to be funny but comes across as merely cartoonish, Tobias—having no pen to sign his divorce papers—ventures out of a hotel in a bathrobe and is struck by a car. As he learns upon waking in the hospital, the vehicle was driven by Almut. She’s a chef, and when he visits her restaurant and explains that he’s splitting from his wife, a passionate new relationship is born.

In the past, Almut and Tobias are smitten with each other until the former divulges that she has no interest in children, resulting in a fight that’s resolved with a big Tobias speech in front of Almut’s friends (at a baby shower, no less!).

Passionate sex in bed and on the floor is commingled with contractions and trips to the maternity ward, not to mention further flashbacks to Tobias living with his dad (Douglas Hodge)—who cuts his hair in the bathtub, and even shaves the back of his neck for good measure—and the two of them meeting Almut’s family over dinner. During that sit-down, it’s revealed that before becoming a celebrated cook, Almut was a championship figure skater—one of many occasions when We Live in Time piles on just for the sake of it.

Throughout, Crowley’s temporal flip-flopping proves a gimmick designed only to gussy up what would otherwise be a straightforward dying-wife weepie. Nick Payne’s script may think this device speaks to the material’s belief in seizing the day and the beauty of the memories that make survival worthwhile. In reality, however, it serves little purpose other than to embellish the overstuffed action, whose abundant clichés undermine the stars’ winning rapport.

From the get-go, Garfield and Pugh mesh perfectly in We Live in Time , so it’s frustrating that Crowley keeps saddling them with one contrived situation after another. Of those, the centerpiece is Almut and Tobias’ race to the hospital (for the second time) to have their baby—a trip that’s stymied by traffic, motivating Almut to wander to a nearby gas station where, in a locked bathroom whose door Tobias and two employees must break down, she goes into full-blown labor. This is another only-in-the-movies predicament, if also the sole bit that actually builds enough comedic momentum to earn a mild smile. Unfortunately, like the rest of this slush, it’s just another pit stop on the road to tragedy, whose forthcoming appearance hangs over every tense fight and lovey-dovey interaction.

We Live in Time can’t stop adding ingredients, so that Almut is additionally torn between taking it slow while she receives treatment for her (ovarian, it turns out) cancer and competing in a cooking competition that Tobias thinks is, given the circumstances, a bad idea. The push-pull between individual and familial desires, needs, and responsibilities is a fundamental one for Almut, and Pugh strives to make the character’s many aspects mesh.

She’s not wholly successful in that endeavor, but she and Garfield shine whenever together, and their easygoing dynamic goes some way toward making the film watchable. It’s not, however, enough to compensate for an endless procession of cutesy details and dilemmas, be it Tobias being a Weetabix cereal salesman or Almut’s colleague and competition partner Jade (Lee Braithwaite) shaving their head in solidarity with their increasingly sick teammate.

We Live in Time is most grounded when it stops straining to be adorable and tragic, the best example of which is a low-key scene featuring Tobias joining a very pregnant Almut in a bathtub, the two of them sitting quietly and sharing chocolate-covered biscuits.

Too often, alas, Crowley de-prioritizes the real in favor of the preciously whimsical and romantic, here epitomized by slow-motion snippets of the protagonists spinning about on a merry-go-round, their smiles as big as the ride is colorful. As things grow direr for Almut, the film gets downright maudlin, chockablock with puking in toilets and alleyways, fights over secrets and lies, and weeping over wedding invitations now dumped in the trash.

For all its zigzagging between yesterday and today, We Live in Time never shies away from the fact that it’s simply headed in one oh-so-sad direction. More grating than its predictability, though, is its excessive mawkishness, which ultimately becomes a tidal wave that drowns out everything else, including the considerable magnetism of its accomplished headliners.
