MGMT 180 "Technology Leadership"

Monday and Wednesday Mornings

Technology has fundamentally changed the lives of consumers, enterprises, economies and societies. For consumers, it has enabled broader and more convenient access to information, commerce, and connectedness. For enterprises, it has lowered costs, facilitated entry to and competition in new markets, deepened customer engagement, blurred traditional product/service lines, and created new challenges and threats of disruption. For enterprises and entrepreneurs alike, technology has created new product/service opportunities, new waves of growth, and new markets. This course will examine the dynamic nature of technology, the disruption and innovation taken to create new services with competitive advantages. We will explore a variety of industry-changing products and services, including connected devices (Internet of Things), cloud computing, artificial intelligence, over-the-top content and shared economy offerings. This course will also look at the concepts and models which have enabled these new services, threatened existing providers, changed competitive landscapes and blurred lines of service offerings. Such topics will include the role of standards, disruptive innovation, advertising-based business models, multi-sided platforms, cloud-based business models, and effects of competing convergence and unbundling. The class will also significantly focus on the increasing role and power of data as a predictive tool. While this course is focused on technology-based industries, the core learnings in strategy development, disruptive innovation and business models are relevant to numerous other industries.  

MGMT 163 "Entrepreneurship and New Product Development"

Tuesday and Thursday Mornings

New products are the lifeblood of any corporation and the cornerstone of any economy. Without expanding the product portfolio, any modern corporation can quickly succumb to competition and lose significant market share, or even be totally dis-intermediated. This phenomenon has been intensified with the advancements in digital economy. The innovation process has been significantly altered as a result of the impact of digital economy across all industries and markets. While most companies recognize the need for new products, not all such new products that are introduced to the market are successful. And even a smaller percentage can stand the test of time and reach significant market share or achieve resilient popularity. Innovation is one of the key drivers of making new products. We will examine the process of innovation and new product development and discuss the associated paradigms and success factors (through the case and class discussions).

This course is designed to help students deepen their understanding of new product innovation, development, and management. In the course the student will assume the role of a product developer or a product manager focused on developing a –new- concept into a new product (for a start-up or a mature corporation). This product developer/manager identifies, develops, and commercializes a new product according to the material presented in the class and the reading assignments. The course will seek to develop students’ critical thinking, decision-making skills, and creativity to develop and launch a successful new product (team project).

MGMT 180 "Applications and Business Models of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence"

Monday and Wednesday Afternoons

In today's business world, data is one of the most vital assets of any organization or business, and knowing how to manage, analyze, and glean insights from data sets is essential to making forward-looking and effective decisions. As a result, databases in which data is quality, protected, yet easily accessible and understandable have become the core of companies' intellectual infrastructures.

Similarly, data is essential to the functioning of artificial intelligence and machine learning. This course will provide a practical foundation in data science and artificial intelligence through the lens of industry examples.Students, both technical and non-technical, will gain a better general understanding of the facets of AI, its business applications today and in the future, its ethical and societal impacts, and how both data science and AI can be applied to students' future careers.

Team Project

Students will work in teams under the guidance of the instructor and prepare to present their projects to the instructor, their peers and invited guests for a comprehensive feedback.

Speaker Series

Opportunity to listen to high-profile industry leaders and professionals to gain insight into the backgrounds and experiences of their learnings along the path of reaching the accomplished levels they currently hold.

Company Visits

Opportunity to visit local companies and startups. These trips usually include presentations by company by managers and leaders followed by a tour. Such visits provide insights into the workings of a company, its culture, and an opportunity to meet and network with the managers and leaders of the company.

Opportunity to meet and learn from a panel of MBA students on their experiences and learnings as they work in industry and study in UCLA Anderson.

EDGE Online

EDGE Online is offered to Technology Leadership Summer Institute students free of charge in order to better prepare them for their on-campus experience. EDGE is a fully online course and provides a vital overview of business foundations, teaching keys frameworks and vocabulary that will help students to apply the specific knowledge which they acquire in the Technology Leadership Summer Institute and use it more effectively as they enter the world of work. Students will be registered for EDGE Online upon acceptance into the Technology Leadership Summer Institute and will be expected, wherever possible, to complete the course before the program ends. Edge Online's content will be referenced by Technology Leadership Summer Institute instructors and students must demonstrate their understanding of EDGE tools and frameworks in their assignments. All students must complete Edge Online in order to receive the certificate of completion for the Technology Leadership Summer Institute.  Learn More

Do you wish the course design process was a little less solitary? Is it hard to tell if your students are engaged and learning? You’re not alone! Join CAT’s summer learning community and work with peers and CAT staff to get a jump start on building out a 2023-24 course plan that is academically rigorous but also flexible , equitable , and–above all– authentic to YOUR teaching context and learning goals. Special emphasis areas for 2023: GE, Writing II, and Diversity courses.

CAT’s 2023 Faculty Summer Institute will be held on campus August 14-18 with workshops held daily from 10am-12pm Pacific Time (with Zoom contingency plans). Participants who satisfy all program requirements will receive a letter from CAT certifying completion and will be eligible to apply for up to $1,000 from CAT to support further teaching-related professional development. What is the Center for the Advancement of Teaching’s Faculty Summer Institute for Course (Re)Design?

CAT’s 2023 Faculty Summer Institute for Course (Re)Design is a facilitated learning community that provides support for instructors who are preparing to develop a new course or substantially revise an existing course to be offered during the 2023-24 academic year. You can expect to work closely with peers and CAT facilitators to build on lessons learned from your prior teaching experience and apply evidence-based practices to create or revise your course plan with an eye toward fostering equitable and effective learning for your students. We ask participants to apply with a specific course to work on, but the work you will complete in this institute is designed to support your teaching long-term. This institute is suitable for faculty who are creating a new course as well as those who are substantially revising an existing course, and is designed to support teaching in any modality. All interested faculty are encouraged to apply but space is limited . See below for additional information re: eligibility and priority curricular areas for 2023.

BENEFITS : In addition to the support of a learning community composed of faculty peers, CAT staff, and librarians, participants who successfully complete all program requirements receive a letter from CAT certifying completion and are eligible to apply for up to $1,000 from CAT to support further teaching-related professional development. Participation in CAT’s Faculty Summer Institute for Course (Re)Design can also be highlighted in your dossier to be recognized for your next merit or promotion.

Program Details

Learning objectives.

This program is organized around the following learning objectives, each of which is tied to a deliverable that you can use immediately in your teaching (and dossier):

  • Increase transparency in course-level and assignment-level learning objectives [ deliverable: revised syllabus / assignment ]
  • Adapt assessments to be more effective for student learning and equitable for all modalities of instruction [ deliverable: revised assignment ]
  • Identify opportunities to scaffold learning and build community through intentional activities during and outside of class sessions [ deliverable: revised lesson plan / assignment ]
  • Create a plan to collaborate effectively with TAs and other members of your teaching team to implement equity-minded course revisions that help students from all backgrounds and skill levels succeed [ deliverable: Teaching Innovation Plan + optional teaching team contract ]

Program Structure & Outcomes

Your work to meet the institute’s learning objectives will be supported through five hands-on two-hour workshops held on campus, as well as resources you can consult on your own time. See the schedule and details below. Each workshop will require approximately two hours of pre-work so that our synchronous time can be devoted to interactivity and engagement. Participants will access all pre-work and supplemental resources via a Bruin Learn site dedicated to the program. The institute culminates in the creation of revised course materials, as well as a short 1-2 page Teaching Innovation Plan documenting lessons learned and future directions.

Revised course materials and Teaching Innovation Plans must be submitted to CAT by September 15, 2023 to receive your letter certifying completion and to be eligible to apply for up to $1,000 from CAT to support further teaching-related professional development. Participants will also be invited to showcase their work in a CAT event. Extensions to the September 15 deadline can be granted on a case-by-case basis.

Eligibility

This program is open to all faculty assigned to teach during the 2023-24 academic year, including Senate Faculty, Non-Senate Faculty, teaching postdocs, and academic administrators. The program is suitable for faculty who are creating a new course as well as those who are substantially revising an existing course. Space is limited. Priority will be given to instructors teaching general education, Writing II, and diversity courses–but all interested faculty are encouraged to apply. We will build a wait-list in the event that the institute reaches capacity.

Admission to the program is contingent on availability to attend all workshops. We will have plans in place to pivot to Zoom meetings if the public health situation necessitates a shift to remote programming, but the expectation and hope is that this learning community will meet in person . Applicants will be asked to verify that they will be available to join us at UCLA from 10am-12pm on August 14-18. Light refreshments will be provided each day, along with an optional kick-off breakfast on Monday and a celebratory lunch following our final workshop on Friday.

Workshop 1: Foundations for Equitable and Effective Course Design

This kick-off workshop provides an opportunity for you to reflect on your teaching experience and guides you through core principles of backward design, as well as self-reflection and group activities to explore how our identities impact our roles as educators and examine ways that social identity threat and other forms of bias negatively impact students. This workshop culminates in an action planning activity to help ensure that your individual work in subsequent workshops aligns with goals that are authentic and meaningful for your specific teaching context.

Workshop 2: Interrupting Bias in Course Design

This workshop explores how various forms of bias impact course design, and helps you develop skills to interrupt bias when selecting and delivering course content and designing assignments and lessons. You will receive structured peer feedback on specific elements of your course design and will leave the workshop with a plan of action for revising your course plan to increase transparency and improve outcomes for all students.

Workshop 3: Scaffolding Instruction to Support Student Learning

In this hands-on workshop, CAT staff and members of the UCLA Library’s Writing Instruction & Research Education team (WI+RE) will introduce you to strategies for supporting students as they develop skills in research, writing, and critical thinking. After reflecting on common and hidden challenges students face, you will work in small groups with peers and librarians to scaffold high-stakes assignments and identify equitable and effective strategies for assessing student performance.

Workshop 4: Fostering Student Engagement

This practical session offers a deeper dive into equity-minded, evidence-based strategies for fostering student engagement in courses of any size and in any teaching modality. Our focus is on giving you an opportunity to experience accessible, high-impact teaching practices that can help support individual and collaborative learning inside and outside of class time. You will also have an opportunity to begin aligning activities with lessons for your specific course.

Workshop 5: From Action Planning to Action

This culminating workshop will provide an opportunity for you to showcase your course design work, receive peer feedback, and strategize with other participants about next steps—including ways to engage your TAs and other members of UCLA’s teaching support community in further developing and implementing your re-envisioned course. CAT facilitators will introduce you to strategies for developing a teaching team contract centered around equity, as well as resources to support your teaching beyond the duration of this institute.

Faculty who regularly teach required courses in the international development studies major speak about their courses and how they work collaboratively to build student knowledge of the subject matter.

UCLA International Institute, August 8, 2022 — International development studies (IDS) faculty who taught several of the major’s core required courses in the 2021–22 academic year worked to strengthen the cumulative pedagogy of their courses. The collaboration among these UCLA professors, all of whom have joint appointments in the International Institute and other departments — including Asian American studies and labor studies ( Jennifer Jihye Chun ), anthropology ( Hannah Appel ), sociology ( Kevan Harris ) and African American studies ( Alden Young ) — is part of the IDS program’s emphasis on reflexivity and critical engagement, says Chun, who became academic chair of the program on July 1 (see related article ). Introductory course “Jennifer spoke to me about what she wanted her students to know by the time they came into their second quarter of the IDS major. She wanted us to think about the progression of courses as building blocks for IDS students,” said Hannah Appel, associate professor of anthropology, who reworked the curriculum for Introduction to the International Development Studies (IDS 1) when she taught it for the first time in fall 2021. The introductory course was originally designed, with input from other IDS faculty, and taught by instructor Erica Anjum (UCLA IDS 2012, Africa Studies M.A. 2016) in 2018, who continues to regularly teach the course. “The central objective of IDS 1 is to engage students with debates around the widening patterns of disparities of wealth, power, privilege and access to social justice — as well as the policies, interventions and forms of citizen engagement intended to address them — both between and within the countries of the Global South and North,” says Anjum. “While the course is designed to be foundational for the IDS major, I hope it also helps students of all majors be more aware, empathetic and responsible citizens.”

Appel based her IDS 1 curriculum on a recent critical survey of development written by economic anthropologist Jason Hickel: “ The Divide: Global Inequality from Conquest to Free Markets ” (Norton, 2018). With the exception of one “deep-dive” lecture on the role of racism in development, she assigned one chapter of the book and one primary source for each class. “In a very accessible way, Hickel tells the story of global inequality from conquest, by which he mostly means European colonialism, to the present day — both chronologically and thematically. It’s a scholarly account, but there are no footnotes or endnotes in the text itself [they are placed at the back],” comments Appel. “One of the things I heard repeatedly from my students, which was so exciting to me, was: ‘I liked this book so much, I told my parents to get it — my parents are reading it alongside me and we’re talking on Zoom about it.’ “The book is a great tool for introducing people to broad narratives that help them think differently about development, about capitalism and about the relationship between the U.S. and much of the rest of the world. Plus Hickel covers critical numeracy very well.” Required core courses Appel’s course laid the groundwork for Chun’s course — Culture, Power and Development (IDS 110) in winter quarter 2022. “I could really tell the difference in the students this year,” shares Chun, associate professor of Asian American and labor studies. “Hannah did a great job laying out the broad historical and contextual issues that shape issues of culture, power and development, so that when students got to my class, I could focus more on in-depth studies of particular countries and economic sectors.” “I have designed the course to focus on collective efforts that have taken place to democratize and decolonize development, which have been part of every major aspect of economic development over the past century,” explains Chun. “Cultural development is not a top-down history. It is a deeply contested process of destruction and transformation shaped by different people, groups and movements as they struggle to change the calculus of power over who gets what, how much — or how little — and why.” “Rather than focus primarily on leaders in business and government, we look closely at workers, peasants, migrants, women and indigenous communities as key actors of development,” says Chun. “We examine their strategies, organizations, dreams and aspirations, as well as the ways in which they have built solidarity movements within their countries and across national borders.”

Guest speakers are a crucial component of the course, enhancing students’ understanding of the difference that actors on the ground can make in demanding more just and equitable outcomes. This past year, students had the opportunity to hear directly from Adriana Paz Ramirez, the Latin America coordinator of the International Domestic Workers Federation, and Manuel Rodriguez Pumoral, chief of social protection and policy at UNICEF Jordan. In addition to Chun’s course, IDS 130 — Theory and History in International Development — was also offered in winter 2022 by Kevan Harris, associate professor of sociology. “This year, I sensed that students had acquired more cumulative knowledge when they arrived in class,” he says, echoing Chun. “In addition to presenting different explanations for how the world became so unequal by the 20th century, in the first part of the course we look at what [newly independent] states and their leaders and planners thought should be done in the 1950s and 1960s, the range of industrial policies and economic policies they tried and the various problems that those policies induced,” he explains. The second part of the class is devoted to regional historical surveys of East Asia (including China), South Asia, Latin America, Africa and the USSR (with attention to post-Soviet Russia and Eastern Europe). “The concepts of the first half of the class come back in a regional context and show up in the readings,” he says. “I have two reasons for focusing on different regions,” notes Harris. “One is that an unintended consequence of the critique of colonialism is that students have this idea of European colonialism as the sole foundation of global history. “But characteristics of regional economies prior to colonization, or prior to colonization by Europe, have a big effect on post-colonial development. Think of the long-lasting links between the Chinese empire and East Asian trade, the huge Indian Ocean world economy connecting East Africa and the Middle East to South Asia, or the massive imperial networks built in the pre-Columbian Americas.”

The second reason for a regional focus, he continues, is that “colonization was not a single thing. In some cases it was very short, in some cases, it was very long. In some cases, very shallow, and in some cases, very deep and transformative. “[The course] links regional histories to the different ways that postcolonial states have approached the problem of development — I think that’s my contribution to the major,” he comments. Harris pays particular attention to critical numeracy. “I want students to think of numbers the way they think of language: people use numbers to tell stories. And just as when you listen to someone tell a story, you can interpret it in different ways. “This relates to questions such as: How is poverty measured? How is inequality measured? We talk a lot about different ways of showing the same data, and how the different ways you show data tell a different story.” To close out the year, Alden Young taught IDS 140 — Decolonizing Political Economy: Colonialism and Development — in spring 2022. It was only the second time the course has been offered. “The course starts with the question of how development emerges from the beginning of the colonial experience. We look particularly at the abolition of the slave trade and the ways in which the discourse of development is tied to the discourse of abolition,” he says of the class, which intensively uses primary sources from developing countries. “We talk about how colonialism and development more or less merge out of a humanitarian impulse as two kinds of interrelated subjects,” says Young. “Then we look at the ways African and Middle Eastern scholars have tried to use development as a way to argue for the end of colonialism.” Young focuses on how the creation of developing countries is understood in the Global North. “It’s not like we were going to Africa to save Africa,” he comments. “A lot of the processes that cause poverty around the world are also the same processes that cause our wealth. I try to tell students that development can be used in many different types of political projects.” Faculty goals for students One sustained goal of the faculty is to teach IDS students critical thinking skills. “By critical, I mean being open to the idea that you might be wrong and the prevailing wisdom might be wrong,” comments Harris. “It means having students think about countervailing arguments and what kind of evidence would be needed to support one versus the other. “You also get students to think about complex problems as bundles of reasons that are sticky and that may or may not go together, but they’re not the same in every country. The goal is to nudge students away from single-bullet answers, whether it’s patriarchy or tradition or neoliberalism.” “I’m really impressed by IDS students,” says Chun. “They have a curiosity about the world that I relate to and am also inspired by. It’s a gift to work in a field where we are exposed to students like that — I really enjoy them.”

“We get a lot of students,” comments Young, “Some are from economics and interested in other ways of thinking about economics. And we get a lot of students who want to do development and humanitarian work. “Some students want to help the countries they come from and are interested in questions such as: What we can develop beyond just reproducing the system that we have? How can development do more than simply reinforce capitalism, as we understand it now? “The hardest thing is actually not making students too pessimistic,” says Young. “ I think our goal is to prepare them not to be naïve [if and] when they go into development.” Adds Chun, “We are trying to encourage students that if development or foreign policy plays to your strengths, figure out what the constraints are and what the possibilities are, and find the space to maneuver.”

The  Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE)  is usually described as an annual two-week “boot camp” on energy and sustainability — but it’s much more. SISE is a “we,” a community invested in broad issues related to energy, the environment, and sustainability, and a space that values diverse people, disciplines, perspectives, and experiences. Within this space, we engage with future and current thought leaders and societal influencers. Through conversation, critical thinking, and community engagement, we create and share knowledge to shape the future.

SISE 2021 Theme: Finding Ecosystem

Since March 2020, the idea of staying within one’s “bubble” has been a necessary part of daily life. But bubbles are not new, and individuals have been in “bubbles” their whole lives. Some are elected, such as political or ideological affiliations, and some are assigned due to race or gender. We can move freely between some bubbles, and sometimes we can exist in two bubbles simultaneously.

Bubbles. Silos. Ecosystems. Depending on one’s frameworks, and whether we consider the micro or the macro levels, perspectives gained can be focused or broad, restrictive, or all-encompassing. So when we talk about “energy” and “environment” and “climate change,” what do we include and exclude in our individual and collective definitions, our “bubbles”? And what do we not know (that we don’t know) that would impact our personal opinions and collective choices?

In SISE 2021: Finding Ecosystem, we will consider the broad ecosystem of energy, how that fits into the response to climate change, and how a broad strategy inclusive of science, culture, and environmental justice can be catalysts for creating change. Selected Fellows will be asked to hone their critical thinking skills throughout as they engage experts and each other through rigorous discussion and debate.

SISE is free for everyone, participating Fellows and virtual attendees. When in-person, SISE also covers the cost of lodging in Chicago and often assists with transportation to and from the program, thanks to the Alvin H. Baum Family Fund’s kind contributions.

Serving as a PhD taster programme, the PolyU Research Postgraduate (RPg) Summer School will take place in face-to-face mode on campus this July. Participants will have opportunities to meet professors, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, visit advanced research facilities, participate in knowledge enrichment activities, and interact with students and alumni for experience sharing. We welcome all local and non-local senior undergraduates and master students who are planning to pursue research studies to apply.

The RPg Summer School is a  PhD tasting programme  for participating students to experience wide aspects of postgraduate research studies as well as campus life at PolyU. Participants will have the opportunities to meet professors, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, visit advanced research facilities, participate in knowledge enrichment activities, and interact with students and alumni for experience sharing.

PolyU provides up to HK$10,000 (~US$1,270) scholarship, free student hall accommodation and subsidy of Hong Kong study visa application for each qualified participant, plus conditional offers of admission to our RPg studies .  Senior undergraduates and master students from any discipline of your university who are planning to pursue research studies are welcomed to apply for our RPg Summer School. The application deadline is  5 March 2023 .

The PolyU Research Postgraduate Summer School (virtual mode, 13 July - 27 July, excluding Saturdays and Sundays) not only serves as a PhD-tasting programme for the participants to experience wide elements of research studies but also provides them with an opportunity to get familiar with the support that PolyU will offer. 

During the Summer School, students will have opportunities to meet professors and researchers, attend workshops to learn different research-related skills, interact with students and alumni for experience sharing, and prepare their research proposal for presentation at the end of the Summer School.

One-to-one mentorship with an eminent professor Successful applicants will be supervised by an eminent professor in HKU to plan and carry out a research project. The Programme office will help participants match with mentors based on participants’ given priorities.

Scholarship for participants A scholarship of HK$10,000 1 will be awarded to each participant of the Programme upon successful completion of the Programme.  

Financial support  Financial support of airfare up to HK$5,000 1 , and university accommodation up to HK$5,000 1 will be provided on a reimbursement basis.

Prizes and awards for top performers Prizes and awards will be available for top performers in the Programme.  The details will be announced in due course. 

Possible conditional offer for a HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship  Selected students with outstanding performance may be awarded a conditional offer for the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship.  The HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship is the most prestigious entrance scholarship to attract top students from around the world to pursue full-time PhD studies at HKU. The scholarship package includes up to HK$420,900 (US$53,960) in the first year, and up to HK$400,900 (US$51,390) in each of the subsequent years during the normative study period.  Click  here for the details regarding the scholarship.

Q1.    Can I apply for Summer Research Programme if I am just a Year 2 UG student? A1:    If you are an outstanding student with excellent academic achievement, or you have ample research experience, you may still submit your application for the summer research programme for the Faculties to consider.  Though senior UG students might have higher priority to be selected.

Q2.    I will have my exam and cannot come to Hong Kong till mid-/late June, can I still apply /eligible for the programme? A2:    If you are selected for the programme, you may apply to attend the Programme via online mode as an exceptional arrangement until you can physically come to Hong Kong.  It is expected that students should arrive Hong Kong in person in week 4 the latest. 

Q3.    I haven’t taken the English Language proficiency test, am I eligible to apply for the summer research programme? A3:    You may still apply for the summer research programme if you have not yet taken the English Language proficiency test, although that would be one of the considerations when selecting candidates for the programme.  

Q4.    I realised that I have submitted wrong information in the form by mistake, what should I do? A4:    Please send in the request for amending submitted information via email: [email protected] . 

Q5.    I have submitted the application and uploaded the required documents, but I haven’t paid the application fee.  What should I do? A5:    Your application will not be processed if you have not paid the application fee.  Please proceed to settle the payment and send an email to [email protected] specifying your full name, registered email address and the receipt number.

Q6.    My official transcript will not be ready before the application deadline.  What should I do? A6:    Please submit the latest transcript available for the application.  

Q7.    Can I submit supplementary information after submission of information? A7:    Please arrange all your documents and supplementary information all in one pdf file, and send it to [email protected] .  The latest submission of documents will replace the previous set of documents.

Summer Research@ CUHK

The Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (SURP) provides an opportunity for undergraduate students from overseas universities to undertake research attachments for eight weeks at CUHK during the summer. Students will be actively engaged in research under the supervision of a CUHK faculty member and earn three credits upon successful completion of the programme.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

USM’s Summer Field Program Offers Students Unique Coastal Research Opportunities

Jump aboard a research vessel and take in the beauty of the Mississippi Sound and unique barrier islands with the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s (GCRL) Summer Field Program, in which students can study marine science in a coastal environment.

Located in Ocean Springs, Miss, the Summer Field Program was established in 1947 at Magnolia State Park; for decades, the program has helped students gain valuable experiences in ocean and marine sciences. It is housed in USM’s School of Ocean Science and Engineering (SOSE), and is offered in two summer sessions, with in-person and online options for undergraduate and graduate students looking to learn more about the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Dr. Laura Blackmon, associate director of the Marine Education Center, looks forward to the Summer Field Program’s 77 th year.

“The Summer Field Program will again bring expert marine science instructors together with students from across the region for amazing education experiences,” Dr. Blackmon said. “It has produced a wide network of alumni, including marine science researchers and educators working across the Gulf Coast and Coastal USM, as well as at numerous other colleges, universities, and marine labs nationwide.”

Classes are set both in a laboratory and field work setting, with USM research vessels allowing students to explore the Mississippi Sound. Overnight trips to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico allow students to fully study the beauty of the coastal habitats. On-site amenities include a dormitory, dining hall, library, and a research specimen museum.

The first session, offered in June, features courses such as shark biology, marine ecology, oceanography, coastal environments and restoration, and environmental photography. An online session offers a comprehensive overview of the biology of marine mammals.

The second session, offered in July, will focus on marine conservation and ichthyology, marine biology, and toxicology. An online session will be offered with a focus on marine invertebrate zoology. Academic credit will be awarded upon completion.

Dr. Kelly Darnell, director of the GCRL, described the uniqueness of the program and all it has to offer.

“Our Summer Field Program gives students the unique opportunity to live at the Gulf Coast Research Lab and be fully immersed in the environment and ecosystems they’re studying,” Dr. Darnell said. “For many students, this is their first experience with marine biology – I can’t think of a better or more memorable way to learn than to dive right in.”

Set up by the Innovation and Technology Commission (“ITC”), HKSAR government, the STEM Internship Scheme (the “Scheme”) encourages STEM students to gain innovation and technology (“I&T”)-related work experience during their studies and to foster their interest in pursuing a career in I&T after graduation, so as to enlarge the local I&T talent pool.

We would like to solicit your support for the Scheme through offering I&T-related internship positions to our students.  Internship Vacancy Posting

Please note that the Job Post Request Form and Eligibility Verification Form are currently CLOSED due to overwhelming responses.

Student’s Eligibility Verification

  • Upon offer confirmation , the employer has to inform PolyU via the Eligibility Verification Form to obtain confirmation from PolyU in relation to student’s eligibility/funding availability. PolyU will advise the employer regarding the eligibility of the proposed student intern (within five working days for local undergraduate students and within 14 days for non-local/postgraduate students) after receiving the student’s online application for the Scheme.
  • Student applications have to go through PolyU for approval, which is subject to student eligibility, internship nature, and funding availability at students’ time of submission.
  • The Scheme will be closed when the provision of funding is exhausted .

Allowance and Reimbursement

  • The allowance for the internship for each student intern is HK$11,190 per month (i.e. 30 days), capped at two months. The abovesaid allowance will be reimbursed to student interns via PolyU .
  • The employer can, at own discretion and expenses, extend the internship duration or offer additional allowance to the student intern(s), provided that the arrangements comply with the Employment Ordinance, the Minimum Wage Ordinance, the Mandatory Provident Fund Ordinance, and other related ordinances.
  • The employer is expected to remind and support the student intern(s) to complete online application(s) upon offer confirmation, the required documents for reimbursement after the internship, and communicate with PolyU as early as possible if any problem arises that would affect the reimbursement of the allowance.

Eligibility As required by ITC, the Scheme is open to undergraduates and postgraduates who are:

  • local or non-local students enrolling on one of the  full-time STEM programmes  (please refer to the “ List of Eligible STEM Programmes ” on this page) recognised by ITC to be eligible for the Scheme;
  • from  any year of studies ; and
  • legally employable  in Hong Kong.

Internship Requirements

  • Full-time placements in Hong Kong  with duration of  at least four consecutive weeks (i.e. 28 calendar days), allowance  capped at two months .
  • The duration of the internship is the number of calendar days in the contract period, and the start and end days of the internship should be working days .
  • I&T-related internship positions , i.e. actual work which contains sufficient I&T elements.
  • The summer internship should commence  no earlier than May 2023 , with a duration of at least four consecutive weeks.
  • The internship funded by the Scheme, as required by ITC,  CANNOT be used to fulfil WIE requirements . However, the internship period IN EXCESS of that required for WIE requirements could be funded by the Scheme. For students who are undertaking an internship period IN EXCESS of that required by WIE requirements, please refer to Appendix 3 in the  Guidelines for Students .
  • Internship positions directly subsidised by the Government DO NOT fall under this Scheme (e.g. internship programmes of the HKSAR Government).

Application Procedures

  • Students may apply for STEM internship positions through PolyU Job Board or Faculties/Schools/Departments, or source on their own.
  • Online Application Form (for applicants undertaking an internship period in excess of their WIE requirements, click HERE )
  • Copy of Employment Contract
  • Signed  Student Charter (for applicants undertaking an internship period in excess of their WIE requirements, click HERE )
  • Copy of Student ID Card
  • Copy of “No Objection Letter” (“NOL”) issued by the Immigration Department (for non-local students only)
  • Home Faculty’s/School’s/Department’s approval for student’s internship participation (for research postgraduate students only)
  • Approval for student applications will be granted by CPS, SAO based on student eligibility, internship nature, and funding availability at students’ time of submission. The first batch of applications will receive priority consideration for approval. CPS, SAO may consider later batch(es) of applications subject to the funding availability.
  • Successful applicants are required to attend an  online pre-internship training workshop  organised by CPS, SAO.
  • Students should submit the following items to CPS, SAO  within two weeks upon the completion of internship:
  • Assessment/Evaluation Form (to be filled in by both employer and student intern)
  • Timesheet (signed by work supervisor)
  • Salary Statement (if applicable)
  • Learning Journal and Photos
  • Submit bank account information to the Finance Office of PolyU (for undergraduates/taught postgraduates ; for research postgraduates ).
  • Allowance for summer internship for each student intern is  HK$11,190 per month (i.e. 30 days),  capped at two months . Student interns may receive the allowance under the Scheme for more than one internship place, PROVIDED THAT
  • the participating employers are different and the internship periods do NOT overlap; and
  • the maximum amount of allowance does NOT exceed three months in one academic year (i.e. current academic year is from 29 August 2022 to 27 August 2023).
  • Only students who have successfully enrolled on the Scheme, completed the entire internship as specified in the employment contract, and submitted post-internship documents are eligible to receive the allowance.
  • Allowance will NOT be reimbursed to students who fail to achieve 80% attendance rate or cannot complete the internship as planned.
  • Unpaid leaves will NOT be taken into consideration in the calculation of allowance under the Scheme, and will be deducted from the calculation of internship duration.
  • The employers may, at own discretion, offer additional allowance to student interns, which the arrangements should comply with the Employment Ordinance, the Minimum Wage Ordinance, the Mandatory Provident Fund Ordinance, and other related ordinances.

Student interns who do NOT receive a minimum wage from employers for the internship under the Scheme should check their eligibility to work as “Work Experience Student” under the Minimum Wage Ordinance , and submit to employers the Confirmation of Student Status and the statutory declaration (Click HERE for details).

  • Attendance of pre-internship training workshop is a mandatory requirement of release of allowance.
  • Students may expect to receive the allowance around three months after the post-internship submission.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
