speech to text app not working

Use voice typing to talk instead of type on your PC

With voice typing, you can enter text on your PC by speaking. Voice typing uses online speech recognition, which is powered by Azure Speech services.

How to start voice typing

To use voice typing, you'll need to be connected to the internet, have a working microphone, and have your cursor in a text box.

Once you turn on voice typing, it will start listening automatically. Wait for the "Listening..." alert before you start speaking.

Note:  Press Windows logo key + Alt + H to navigate through the voice typing menu with your keyboard.

Install a voice typing language

You can use a voice typing language that's different than the one you've chosen for Windows. Here's how:

Select Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region .

Find Preferred languages in the list and select Add a language .

Search for the language you'd like to install, then select Next .

Select Next or install any optional language features you'd like to use. These features, including speech recognition, aren't required for voice typing to work.

To see this feature's supported languages, see the list in this article.

Switch voice typing languages

To switch voice typing languages, you'll need to change the input language you use. Here's how:

Select the language switcher in the corner of your taskbar

Press Windows logo key + Spacebar on a hardware keyboard

Press the language switcher in the bottom right of the touch keyboard

The following table tells you what you can say. If a word or phrase is in bold , it's an example. Replace it with similar words to get the result you want.

Dictating letters, numbers, punctuation, and symbols

You can dictate most numbers and punctuation by saying the number or punctuation character. To dictate letters and symbols, say "start spelling." Then say the symbol or letter, or use the ICAO phonetic alphabet.

To dictate an uppercase letter, say “uppercase” before the letter. For example, “uppercase A” or “uppercase alpha.” When you’re done, say “stop spelling.”

Here are the punctuation characters and symbols you can dictate.

Dictation commands are available in US English only.

You can dictate basic text, symbols, letters, and numbers in these languages:

Simplified Chinese

English (Australia, Canada, India, United Kingdom)

French (France, Canada)

Spanish (Mexico, Spain)

Fixed: Dictation Not Working on iPhone

Darryl Dsouza

  • Misconfigured settings, bugs and glitches, lack of an active internet connection, etc. are some of the reasons why Dictation might not be working on your iPhone.
  • Ensure to enable Dictation, add the desired language keyboard, switch to that language, and have an active internet connection to fix the dictation feature not working on iPhone.

Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

Dictation allows you to talk and converts your audio to text. It is also known as talk-to-text, speech-to-text, voice-to-text, etc. It’s fairly accurate at most times and is extremely convenient too. Once you get used to Dictation, it can be annoying if it suddenly stops working. Therefore, we’ve compiled this guide with the best troubleshooting methods to help fix Dictation not working on iPhone.

How To Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

1. toggle dictation and restart iphone .

You have to enable Dictation to use it on your iPhone . If the feature isn’t working all of a sudden, it might be because you’ve mistakenly disabled it. And, in case the Dictation feature is enabled, you must try toggling it and restart the iPhone while doing so. This will help iron out temporary bugs and glitches that might be preventing Dictation from working on your iPhone.

Time needed:  4 minutes

Toggle the Enable Dictation feature and Restart iPhone

Enable Dictation in Keyboard Settings on iPhone

2. Add Dictation Language To Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

To dictate in a particular language, you need to add its keyboard to the Apple Keyboard. And then also enable Dictation for that language. Otherwise, your iPhone will neither be able to detect nor convert speech to text. Follow the steps below to add a Language to Apple Keyboard.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Head to the General option.
  • Select the Keyboard option on the next screen.
  • Tap the Keyboards option.

Add New Keyboard on iPhone to Fix Dictation not working on iPhone

  • Select the Language you want to add, tap the preferred keyboard options to select them, and then tap the Done button at the top right corner.

Select the Language off the Keyboard you want to add

  • Tap the Dictation Languages option.

Enable Dictation Language for the newly added Keyboard to Fix Dictation not working on iPhone

The selected language keyboard will be added to the Apple Keyboard. If Dictation is available for the language you just added, you can switch to it easily. Don’t know how? Head to the next step.

3. Switch to the Preferred Dictation Language

Dictation only works when you’re dictating in the same language as the selected Dictation Language or Keyboard. For example, if you’re using the English Keyboard and are dictating in Hindi, it won’t work. Instead, whatever you say will be converted to a similar English word. Therefore, you must switch to the preferred language before dictating in that language.

Here’s how to switch Dictation Language in Apple Keyboard on your iPhone.

  • Open any app in which you want to dictate and convert your voice to text.
  • Tap the text box and the Apple Keyboard will appear.
  • Here, tap and hold on the Microphone icon at the bottom right corner and a list will pop up.

Switch to the Preferred Dictation Language

  • Alternatively, you can also tap and hold on to the Globe icon at the bottom left corner and a list with all the available Keyboards will pop up.
  • Select the preferred Language Keyboard .

Switch Keyboard to a Different Language and then use Dictation

4. Disable Siri and Dictation Restriction To Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

Content and Privacy Restrictions might be the reason why Dictation isn’t working on your iPhone. Yes, if you’ve disabled the Siri & Dictation toggle in the Allowed Apps section, you won’t be able to dictate content. Even if you tap the Microphone icon, it won’t capture audio. To fix this, you must allow Siri & Dictation in Content & Privacy Restrictions in Screen Time settings or disable the Content & Privacy Restrictions feature altogether.

  • Head to the Screen Time option.
  • Scroll down and tap the Content & Privacy Restrictions option.
  • Tap the Allowed Apps option on the Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • On the next screen, enable the Siri & Dictation toggle.
  • Alternatively, turning off the Content & Privacy Restrictions toggle will disable the feature entirely on your iPhone.

Disable Siri and Dictation Restriction to Fix Dictation not working on iPhone

5. Enable Wi-Fi or Cellular Data To Use Dictation

Your iPhone will process voice-to-text (Dictation) for many English voices and this process will happen offline. However, certain other languages require an active internet connection to convert voice to text. Therefore, we recommend enabling Cellular Data or Wi-Fi and then try if Dictation is working on your iPhone. I’ve also noticed that the Hindi Dictation option is unavailable when I do not have an active internet connection on my iPhone.

6. Disable Low Power Mode To Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

The primary purpose of the Low Power Mode is to reduce the background activity which in turn helps extend the battery life. Even though speech-to-text or dictation doesn’t happen in the background, Low Power Mode might be preventing the feature from working to save battery life. Therefore, we suggest disabling Low Power Mode to fix issues related to Dictation on iPhone.

  • Head to the Battery option.
  • Disable the Low Power Mode toggle.

Disable Low Power Mode to Fix Dictation not working on iPhone

7. Use the Default Apple Keyboard To Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

Many third-party keyboards support the Dictation feature. If you’re using a third-party Keyboard plagued with bugs or glitches, it might be the reason why Dictation isn’t working on your iPhone.

To fix this, we suggest switching to the Apple Keyboard and checking if Dictation works fine.

  • Open any app where you want to use the Dictation feature and tap the text box to access the Keyboard.
  • Now tap and hold the Globe icon at the bottom left corner and a list with all the available Keyboards will pop up.
  • Select the English (or any other language’s Apple Keyboard) option from the list.
  • Now tap the Microphone icon at the bottom right corner and check if Dictation is working.
  • If Dictation works on the Apple Keyboard, it means the third-party keyboard is the culprit. We recommend switching to the default Apple Keyboard at least until that particular third-party keyboard company patches this issue.

8. Update iOS To Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

Has Dictation stopped working on your iPhone after a recent iOS update? In that case, the update might have a software bug that is preventing the Dictation feature from working on your iPhone. Update iOS to the latest version to fix Dictation not working on iPhone.

  • Select the Software Update option.
  • Now, tap the Update Now or Install Now button. Please note that either of these options will only be available when a new version of iOS/iPadOS is available.
  • Enter your device’s passcode to continue.

Update iPhone to the latest iOS version

9. Reset All Settings on iPhone

Misconfigured settings might be preventing Dictation from working on your iPhone. Since we can’t check each and every setting as it will be a lengthy process, a simple solution is to Reset All Settings.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Here, scroll down and select the Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad option and on the next page, tap the Reset option.
  • Then select the Reset All Settings option. Enter the device passcode to confirm your selection.
  • Tap the Reset All Settings option in the pop-up to confirm your selection.

Reset All Settings on iPhone to Fix Dictation not working on iPhone

10. Check if the Microphone Is Working

Most iPhone cases sold these days have accurate cutouts for buttons, ports, microphones, etc. However, there are chances that your iPhone case is covering the microphone cavity, consequently leading to Dictation not working on the iPhone. We suggest you remove the case and then try again.

If that doesn’t work, check if you can send voice notes in some other social media apps or just try recording a Voice Memo. then play it and check if you can listen to everything clearly. If you can’t hear the audio clearly you must clean the cavity that houses the Microphone using a cotton swab.

In case the microphone isn’t capturing any audio, it might be a hardware issue. Please do not try to push in a pin in the Microphone cavity in order to clean it. You might end up damaging a perfectly fine microphone. Consider contacting Apple Support or you can even visit the nearest official Apple Store and get the iPhone inspected at the Genius Bar.

What to Know

  • In any text field, tap the microphone icon at the top of the keyboard. Tap it again when you're finished talking.
  • To block or unblock offensive words or change the default language, search Settings for Google Voice Typing .

This article explains how to type on your phone using your voice. This works on all devices that run Android regardless of the manufacturer (Google, Samsung, etc.).

Android phones come with a speech-to-text converter that lets you dictate text messages, emails, and other text you'd ordinarily type. It's enabled by default and should work with any app that accepts text input.

Tap the text box so the keyboard shows up.

Tap the microphone icon .

On the Gboard keyboard (the default for many Android phones), it’s in the upper right corner of the keyboard. If you’re using a different keyboard , it might be elsewhere.

Speak into your phone. You should see your speech converted to text automatically.

On some keyboards, you may see a window with a microphone button while you're dictating. Tap this to alternate between recording and pausing.

When you’re done, tap the microphone icon again to make your phone stop listening to you. You can edit the text as normal if necessary, and then send the message.

Speech-to-text conversion is different from using your Android phone to read text aloud to you .

How to Customize Speech-to-Text on Android

Voice typing works out of the box and there isn't much you need to do on the settings side of things. However, there are two options to consider if you need them. You can block or unblock offensive words and choose the language your phone should use when you're converting speech to text. Here's how:

Options may look slightly different depending on your version of Android, but the steps are basically the same.

Go to Settings > System > Keyboard .

On some devices, it's Settings > System > Language and input or Settings > General management > Language and input .

Tap On-screen keyboard .

Tap Google Voice Typing .

If your preferred language isn’t already selected, tap Languages to choose it. If your preferred language isn't already installed, tap Add a Language , then download the language of your choice.

On some phones, you must turn on Offline speech recognition to dictate when there’s no internet connection available.

You can also control the way the speech-to-text engine responds to obscene language. If a potentially offensive word is dictated, by default that word will appear with asterisks. You can control this by toggling Block offensive words on or off.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Speech-to-Text

Typing with your words is a powerful way to save time and work more efficiently since you can almost certainly dictate a message quicker than you can type it. Below are some tips for getting the most out of this feature.

  • Speak clearly and slowly . If you talk quickly or slur words together, the speech translation will be less accurate and you'll need to waste time editing it after it's translated.
  • Speak punctuation when you talk . It might sound weird at first, but you can create polished, ready-to-send messages by speaking the punctuation as part of the message, such as, "Hello, how are you question mark I am fine period."
  • Add entries to the personal dictionary . You can add specialized words you use often, as well as names of people and places Android has trouble understanding. To add to the dictionary, search the Settings app for Personal dictionary .
  • Avoid noisy environments . You’ll get better results by dictating in quiet spaces.

Go to Settings > System or General Management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard and tap the Google voice typing toggle to turn off speech-to-text on Android.

To set up text-to-speech on Android , go to Settings > Accessibility > Select to Speak . Tap the Select to Speak toggle switch to it turn on. In any app, tap the Select to Speak icon > Play to hear the phone read text aloud.

Voice Typing Not Working on Windows 11? Here's How to Fix It

If Windows 11 isn't listening to your dictation, here's how to get it working again.

If you're into voice typing, Windows 11 has your back. The feature isn't new, but seems to have gotten better on the latest version of Windows. But what do you do when it stops working?

If you're accustomed to using voice typing for performing search queries or even writing full documents, you might find making the switch to using the keyboard unpleasant. While the keyboard is an obvious temporary solution, you need to fix voice typing so you can use it again after the lunch break. That's what we're going to help you with.

How to Launch Voice Typing

There are two ways to launch voice typing on Windows 11 . Either one works just fine, so go for the one that's more convenient.

The first method for enabling voice typing is pressing the microphone key next to the Spacebar on a touch keyboard. If your key isn't working, it won't trigger the voice typing tool.

The other method that should work in most cases is pressing Win + H . Doing this will bring up the voice typing tool on your screen. Click on the microphone button to start using it.

1. Is Your Microphone Enabled?

As you might expect, disabling your microphone stops voice commands from working. Even if you haven't disabled it yourself, you could've done so inadvertently. Re-enabling the mic is fairly straightforward, though.

To enable the mic, launch the Settings app by pressing Win + I and navigate to Privacy & security > Microphone . Toggle the button next to Microphone on to enable it.

While you're here, also check if the app you're trying to access voice typing with has access to your microphone. For instance, if you're trying to use voice typing on MS Word , make sure Word has access to the mic by checking the button next to it.

Go back to the app you were trying to use voice typing with and see if it works.

2. Check the Connection to the Microphone

If you're using a wired microphone, a loose connection could be the problem. Since a loosely connected microphone can't relay the sound properly to your system, your voice typing won't work.

The obvious fix is to wiggle the cord in and ensure it's properly inserted. If that doesn't work, try cleaning the port before reconnecting the cord. If you still find yourself out of luck, try connecting the microphone to another computer. If it doesn't work on a different computer, the problem's likely with the headphones, and using a different pair of headphones should fix the issue.

3. Verify if You're Using the Correct Language

Windows lets you choose a language for speech. If you've configured speech settings to default to a different language than the one you want to use for speech typing, it's apparent how that will cause a problem.

You can check which language your computer is currently using for speech from the Settings app. Press Win + I to launch the Settings app and navigate to Time & language > Speech . Select a speech language of your choice and also check the box next to Recognize non-native accents for this language in case you're not a native speaker of the language you've selected.

4. Run the Built-In Audio Recording Troubleshooter

Windows comes with a suite of built-in troubleshooters for a range of issues. If you haven't been able to fix voice typing so far, perhaps Windows can find an issue that you didn't and fix it automatically.

While there's no troubleshooter specifically for voice typing issues, there's one for problems with recording audio. Since there's a good chance that the issue is mic-related, you might want to use this troubleshooter.

To run the troubleshooter, press Win + I . Once the Settings app opens, navigate to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters . Look for Recording Audio in the list and click on the Run button next to it.

Doing this will launch the troubleshooting wizard. Follow the on-screen instructions. If the troubleshooter identifies the problem, it will try to fix the problem automatically. If not, there's a last resort.

5. Update the Microphone's Driver

A faulty, corrupt, or outdated driver can result render voice typing unusable. Windows downloads the latest drivers automatically by default. However, in some cases, you'll need to update the driver for your microphone manually.

Press Win + R and type devmgmt.msc to launch the Device Manager. Expand the category called Audio inputs and outputs and find your microphone in the list. Right-click on the microphone device and select Update driver .

You'll have the option to let Windows find the best driver and install it automatically, or install the driver manually. In most cases, Windows won't find a driver automatically.

If you do choose the second option, you'll first need the driver installation files downloaded on your PC. You can do this from the manufacturer's website.

Once you have the files, select the second option and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

6. Update Windows

Windows frequently rolls out updates to fix bugs as it keeps identifying them. If a bug in the operating system is causing your voice typing to malfunction, a Windows update can potentially eliminate the issue.

In most cases, Windows will automatically update itself as updates become available unless you've manually disabled automatic updates for your system. If you've disabled updates, you'll need to press Win + I to launch the Settings app and select Windows Update from the left sidebar. Click on the Check for updates button and let Windows scan for currently available updates.

Once it completes scanning, you'll see and Download and Install button, provided Windows found updates to download and install. Click on the button and let Windows finish installing the updates.

Voice Typing Up and Running Once Again

Hopefully, one of these fixes worked for you, and you're able to use the voice typing feature again. Sometimes, you may even face a voice typing issue that's app-specific. For instance, when voice typing won't work in Google Docs .

Windows can often run into strange issues, and a voice typing issue is certainly one of them. However, there are a few other issues in Windows 11 that we hope Microsoft will fix soon.

How to Fix iPhone Dictation Not Working?

Speech to Text Not Working on iPhone

In this guide, I will explain to you how to troubleshoot the issue of speech-to-text not working on iPhone. Smartphone technology has advanced to a whole new level in recent years. To create a piece of text on a smartphone no more you have to sit and draft something word by word through typing.

Using the Speech to text feature on iPhone you can simply dictate the words, sentences, or phrases and it will be automatically appearing as words on the text field. This feature on iOS is called dictation. If this feature is not enabled then you won’t be able to create drafts using voice.

Also, for some users being on a beta version of iOS causes them to come across such bugs where the speech-to-text feature is not working. Although the language on your iPhone is set as per your region, if for any technical problem, the language for dictation changes, you won’t be able to see the words you speak convert to text.

If content restrictions have been set on the iOS for dictation, then it won’t work until the restriction is turned off or whitelisted for the concerned feature.

Best Ways to Fix Dictation Not Working on iPhone

We now know why Speech-to-text or dictation is not working on iPhone. Let’s go through the troubleshooting steps mentioned below to resolve the issue.

1. Ensure that Dictation Feature on iPhone is Enabled

Start by checking whether dictation has been enabled on your iPhone. If not, enable it using the steps below.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on General .

iPhone keyboard settings iOS

Let me show you how to use the dictation feature for those who are new to iOS. Let’s say you are using the Notes app to draft something. You wish to do it using the speech-to-text feature.

  • Open the Notes app.
  • Create a new note.

create speech to text on iPhone

  • Speak up and dictate the sentence. You will see that the spoken words will appear on the screen in the text form.

2. Restart the iPhone

Always remember to give your iPhone a restart if you come across any technical snag. Most of the time a reboot usually resolves the issues that show up out of nowhere.

  • Press the side button of the iPhone.

poweroff iPhone

  • After a few seconds, press the side button to restart the iPhone.
  • Check if the dictation feature of iOS is now working or not. If not, use the other troubleshooting methods.

3. Update iOS Version

iOS users often complain about bugs on the iPhone or its apps. The issue of speech-to-text not working may be related to an unstable version of iOS installed on your iPhone. So, upgrade the iOS build to a newer version. To do that,

  • Go to the Settings app.
  • Next, tap on the Software Update option.
  • The device will start searching for available iOS updates.

how to update iOS on iPhone

After updating the iOS, you should be able to use the speech-to-text feature on the iPhone and Fix Speech to Text Not Working on iPhone.

4. Do Not Use Headphones

If you are planning to use the speech-to-text feature on iPhone, then make sure not to connect any kind of headphones, earphone, or in-ears. Otherwise, whatever you speak, won’t be properly deciphered, and almost nothing will be converted to text.

If you are using the general earpads which are wired earphones from Apple, disconnect them from the iPhone. Otherwise, if you have connected any Bluetooth-supported earphones, disconnect them by following this easy step.

  • Open the Control center on the iPhone.
  • Check if Bluetooth is active for any earphones.

disable bluetooth device on iPhone

Now, use the speech-to-text feature on iPhone, and it will work.

5. Make Sure the Language is added in Keyboard Settings

The Dictation feature only works for a language that is added to the keyboard settings, and also the keyboard is selected. If you’re trying to dictate in Spanish but don’t have the keyboard added, the speech-to-text will not produce any text or produce gibberish.

  • Open the Settings app and go to General.
  • Then, tap the ‘ Keyboard ‘ option and go to ‘ Keyboards ‘.
  • Now, tap on ‘ Add New Keyboard ‘.
  • Here add the keyboard in the language you want.

6. Whitelist Dictation feature from the iOS Content & Privacy Restrictions

iOS has a feature called Content & Privacy Restrictions which, when enabled for various elements of iOS, can restrict their features. Even the dictation feature is included under privacy restrictions.

If the restrictions are enabled, you won’t be able to use the speech-to-text feature. To check that,

  • Tap on Screen Time .

content and privacy restriction settings iOS

  • Next, tap on Allowed Apps .

enable siri and dictation on iPhone

Otherwise, directly disable the Content & Privacy Restrictions altogether on the iPhone.

  • On the next page, you will see a toggle beside Content & Privacy Restrictions .

content and privacy restrictions disabled

7. Reset Network Settings on iPhone

You may reset the network settings on the iPhone if you repeatedly face issues in using speech-to-text.

  • Launch the Settings app.

iOS transfer or reset iPhone

  • Then tap on Reset .

reset network settings on iOS

  • Enter the passcode to confirm and proceed with the reset process.
  • Once the network resets, the iPhone will restart.
  • Now, you can use the dictation feature without any issues.

8. Try to Reset the iPhone Completely

As we are discussing resetting, you may also consider entirely resetting your iPhone. Go for this troubleshooting method only if the other methods do not work for you.

Keep in mind that the reset process will erase everything from your iPhone. So, take a backup of your data to iCloud or your PC via iTunes so that you can restore your device data after the reset.

  • Head to the Settings app.
  • Tap on the option General .
  • Tap on Reset and a menu will show up showing various reset options.

reset all settings of iPhone

  • To carry out the reset, you have to provide the passcode of the iPhone.
  • Once the reset is done and the iPhone boots up, set it up.
  • Use any app to create a text by using the dictation feature. As the device is entirely new due to reset, the dictation feature should work.

So, try these troubleshooting methods to fix the speech-to-text feature on iPhone if it is not working. I hope this guide was useful to you.

Speech to text not working on Samsung

Like many other OEMs, Samsung offers some proprietary services alongside Google Services that come on all Android devices. This includes text-to-speech tools and, the polar opposite, speech-to-text dictation services. Many users prefer dictating instead of typing so the problem we’ll try and tackle today can be quite serious if that’s your preference, as well. Namely, it seems that voice-to-text is not working on Samsung or Voice typing is not working on some Samsung devices.

If you have the same or similar problem, check the solutions we propose below.

In this article:

Why does voice-to-text is not working on my Samsung?

There are a few reasons why voice-to-text might not work on your Samsung. Here are the usual suspects and how to fix them:

  • Samsung TTS works only on Samsung Keyboard and Google Speech Services works only with Gboard.
  • Both Samsung and Google voice-to-text services are enabled. Disable one, preferably the Samsung Voice input.
  • There’s a system bug that caused issues with dictation and you can usually fix it by updating your firmware and allowing permissions.
  • The app data is corrupted. Reset the app by clearing local data from Samsung Voice Input.

1. Check system settings

Firstly, we recommend inspecting Samsung voice input settings and ensuring that everything is enabled. One thing that a few users recommended is disabling either Google Voice Typing or Samsung Voice Input. It seems that, if both are enabled, neither will work as intended.

Now, it depends on what keyboard you prefer, Samsung Keyboard or Google Gboard. Whatever you choose, make sure that the voice typing/dictation option for the other one is disabled and give it another try. My personal preference is Google Voice Typing, although you might favor Samsung instead.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Open the Settings app .
  • Select General Management .
  • Open the Keyboard list and default .

Voice-to-text is not working on Samsung

If you have issues with one, just switch to another. Users report that Google Voice Typing works (particularly on Galaxy S21) while proprietary voice-to-text is not working on Samsung. Give it a try and see for yourself.

2. Reset Google speech services

If you decided on Google Voice Typing but the issue persists, we recommend resetting Speech Services by Google. This tool not only allows TTS (text-to-speech) but also impacts how speech-to-text works. Google made some changes to the service in December 2021. so it’s recommended to keep it up to date. But, before that, you should reset it by either clearing local data or uninstalling updates from the service.

Here’s how to reset Speech Services by Google and fix speech-to-text issues on your Samsung smartphone or tablet:

  • Open Settings .
  • Look for Speech services .
  • Open Speech Services by Google and then open Storage .

Voice-to-text is not working on Samsung

  • Or, while on the App Info screen, tap on the 3-dots menu and uninstall updates . The app should auto-update from Play Store.

Voice-to-text is not working on Samsung

3. Update the firmware if Voice-to-text is not working on Samsung

The problem with voice-to-text (dictation) on Samsung devices was quite predominant on OneUI 3.1 but, as more and more devices get the OneUI 4 (Android 12) update, there are reports that Samsung voice input works better. Although, it’s still not the best with languages that are not English or Korean.

Although Android pushes updates automatically, you can check for available updates and install them from system settings. Here’s how to check for updates manually:

  • Select Software update .
  • Tap Download and install .
  • Install available updates .

If you start seeing some major bugs and problems, consider resetting your device to factory settings . A fresh start is always a way to go whenever you upgrade to a brand-new Android system version and notice some eye-jarring bugs.

4. Reset app preferences

Finally, if none of the previous steps worked, we suggest resetting app preferences . It worked for some users, although we can’t say with certainty that it will work for everyone. You can reset app preferences on your Samsung device by following these instructions:

Voice-to-text is not working on Samsung

  • Confirm and check for improvements.

If text-to-speech is not working on your Samsung smartphone after all these steps, consider reporting the problem to Samsung via the Members app. We hope that there’s no need for that and that you’re able to dictate messages and use voice typing without issues. But, it’s a good way to do something proactively in hope that Samsung will listen.

Thank you for reading and make sure to tell us if the instructions we provided here helped you solve the problem. Do you have a better solution? Share it with us in the comments section below.

4 Fixes for Microsoft Word Dictation Tool Not Working on Windows 11 and 10

  • Ensure your Office subscription is active, as only subscribers can use the Dictation tool.
  • In most cases, enabling microphone access and running the Windows audio troubleshooter should get Word’s dictation tool working.
  • Running Microsoft’s Office repair tool can also help fix such issues with the Word app.

Fix 1: Check Microphone Permission

Windows lets you enable or disable microphone permissions for each app and program individually. If you’ve disabled microphone access for desktop apps on Windows, you may get the “Oops, there was a problem with Dictation” error in Microsoft Word.

Step 1: Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.

Step 2: Switch to the Privacy & security tab. Then, scroll down to App permissions and select Microphone .

Microphone Permissions on Windows 11

Step 3: Turn on the toggles for Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone .

Enable Microphone Permissions on Windows

Step 4: Scroll down and enable the toggle for Let desktop apps access your microphone .

Allow Desktop Apps to Access Microphone on Windows

If you’re having trouble using the dictation tool in Word Online, it’s possible that the browser doesn’t have permission to access your computer’s microphone.

Open Microsoft Word for the web > click the tiny padlock icon on the left of the URL > select Site settings . Under Permissions, use the drop-down menu next to Microphone and select Allow .

Fix 2: Rule Out Issues With Your Microphone

Problems with your microphone can also lead you to believe that Word’s dictation tool is broken. If you use an external microphone on your PC, check its physical connection to see if it’s properly connected.

You must ensure that your preferred microphone is set as the default audio input device. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Right-click on the speaker icon on the taskbar and select Sound settings from the resulting menu.

Sound Settings in Windows 11

Step 2: Choose your preferred microphone under Input and check its volume level.

Check Audio Input Device and Volume in Windows

Step 3: Click your audio input device and use the Start test button to see if the microphone works.

Test Microphone on Windows

After you’ve selected the right input device, use the dictation tool again.

Fix 3: Run the Recording Audio Troubleshooter

Windows has various troubleshooters to fix most system-level issues. So, if the dictation tool still doesn’t work properly, run the Recording Audio troubleshooter on Windows. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Click on the search icon on the taskbar, type troubleshoot settings in the box, and press Enter .

Troubleshoot Settings on Windows 11

Step 2: Go to Other troubleshooters .

Other Troubleshooters in Windows 11

Step 3: Click on the Run button next to the Recording Audio troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions to finish the process.

Fix 4: Repair Microsoft Office

If the microphone works fine in other apps, there could be a problem with the Microsoft Word app on your PC. As Microsoft Word is part of the Office suite, run Microsoft’s Office repair tool on Windows to fix any issues and get the dictation tool working again.

Step 1: Right-click on the Start icon and select Installed apps from the list.

Installed Apps on Windows

Step 2: Scroll down to locate the Microsoft Office product on the list. Click the three-dot menu icon next to it and select Modify .

Modify Microsoft Office on Windows 11

Step 3: Select Online Repair and hit Repair .

Option 5 was the issue.

One more suggestion to add to your list. “Dictate” kept throwing errors at me until and recorded nothing until I turned off my VPN. The VPN apparently prevented essential communication back to Microsoft’s servers to parse my words. The moment I turned off the VPN, voila.

Speech-to-text used to be regarded as very niche, specifically serving either people with accessibility needs or for  dictation . However, speech-to-text is moving more and more into the mainstream as office work can now routinely be completed more simply and easily by using voce-recognition software, rather than having to type through members, and speaking aloud for text to be recorded is now quite common.

While the best speech to text software used to be specifically only for desktops, the development of mobile devices and the explosion of easily accessible apps means that transcription can now also be carried out on a  smartphone  or  tablet .

This has made the best voice to text applications increasingly valuable to users in a range of different environments, from education to business. This is not least because the technology has matured to the level where mistakes in transcriptions are relatively rare, with some services rightly boasting a 99.9% success rate from clear audio.

Even still, this applies mainly to ordinary situations and circumstances, and precludes the use of technical terminology such as required in legal or medical professions. Despite this, digital transcription can still service needs such as basic  note-taking  which can still be easily done using a phone app, simplifying the dictation process.

However, different speech-to-text programs have different levels of ability and complexity, with some using advanced machine learning to constantly correct errors flagged up by users so that they are not repeated. Others are downloadable software which is only as good as its latest update.

Here then are the best in speech-to-text recognition programs, which should be more than capable for most situations and circumstances.

1. Dragon Anywhere

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy

Reasons to avoid.

Dragon Anywhere is the Nuance mobile product for Android and iOS devices, however this is no ‘lite’ app, but rather offers fully-formed dictation capabilities powered via the cloud.

So essentially you get the same excellent speech recognition as seen on the desktop software – the only meaningful difference we noticed was a very slight delay in our spoken words appearing on the screen (doubtless due to processing in the cloud). However, note that the app was still responsive enough overall.

It also boasts support for boilerplate chunks of text which can be set up and inserted into a document with a simple command, and these, along with custom vocabularies, are synced across the mobile app and desktop Dragon software. Furthermore, you can share documents across devices via Evernote or cloud services (such as Dropbox).

This isn’t as flexible as the desktop application, however, as dictation is limited to within Dragon Anywhere – you can’t dictate directly in another app (although you can copy over text from the Dragon Anywhere dictation pad to a third-party app). The other caveats are the need for an internet connection for the app to work (due to its cloud-powered nature), and the fact that it’s a subscription offering with no one-off purchase option, which might not be to everyone’s tastes.

Even bearing in mind these limitations, though, it’s a definite boon to have fully-fledged, powerful voice recognition of the same sterling quality as the desktop software, nestling on your phone or tablet for when you’re away from the office.

Nuance Communications offers a 7-day free trial to give the app a try before you commit to a subscription.

2. Dragon Professional

Should you be looking for a business-grade dictation application, your best bet is Dragon Professional. Aimed at pro users, the software provides you with the tools to dictate and edit documents, create spreadsheets, and browse the web using your voice.

According to Nuance, the solution is capable of taking dictation at an equivalent typing speed of 160 words per minute, with a 99% accuracy rate – and that’s out-of-the-box, before any training is done (whereby the app adapts to your voice and words you commonly use).

As well as creating documents using your voice, you can also import custom word lists. There’s also an additional mobile app that lets you transcribe audio files and send them back to your computer.

This is a powerful, flexible, and hugely useful tool that is especially good for individuals, such as professionals and freelancers, allowing for typing and document management to be done much more flexibly and easily.

Overall, the interface is easy to use, and if you get stuck at all, you can access a series of help tutorials. And while the software can seem expensive, it's just a one-time fee and compares very favorably with paid-for subscription transcription services.

Also note that Nuance are currently offering 12-months' access to Dragon Anywhere at no extra cost with any purchase of Dragon Home or Dragon Professional Individual.

There are three different payment plans, with the basic one being free to use and aside from the features mentioned above also includes keyword summaries and a wordcloud to make it easier to find specific topic mentions. You can also organize and share, import audio and video for transcription, and provides 600 minutes of free service.

The Premium plan also includes advanced and bulk export options, the ability to sync audio from Dropbox, additional playback speeds including the ability to skip silent pauses. The Premium plan also allows for up to 6,000 minutes of speech to text.

The Teams plan also adds two-factor authentication, user management and centralized billing, as well as user statistics, voiceprints, and live captioning.

Website screenshot for Verbit

Verbit aims to offer a smarter speech to text service, using AI for transcription and captioning. The service is specifically targeted at enterprise and educational establishments.

Verbit uses a mix of speech models, using neural networks and algorithms to reduce background noise, focus on terms as well as differentiate between speakers regardless of accent, as well as incorporate contextual events such as news and company information into recordings.

Although Verbit does offer a live version for transcription and captioning, aiming for a high degree of accuracy, other plans offer human editors to ensure transcriptions are fully accurate, and advertise a four hour turnaround time.

Altogether, while Verbit does offer a direct speech to text service, it’s possibly better thought of as a transcription service, but the focus on enterprise and education, as well as team use, means it earns a place here as an option to consider.

5. Speechmatics

Speechmatics offers a machine learning solution to converting speech to text, with its automatic speech recognition solution available to use on existing audio and video files as well as for live use.

Speechmatics offers a wider number of speech to text transcription uses than many other providers. Website screenshot for Google Gboard

1. Google Gboard

If you already have an Android mobile device, then if it's not already installed then download Google Keyboard from the Google Play store and you'll have an instant text-to-speech app. Although it's primarily designed as a keyboard for physical input, it also has a speech input option which is directly available. And because all the power of Google's hardware is behind it, it's a powerful and responsive tool.

If that's not enough then there are additional features. Aside from physical input ones such as swiping, you can also trigger images in your text using voice commands. Additionally, it can also work with Google Translate, and is advertised as providing support for over 60 languages.

Even though Google Keyboard isn't a dedicated transcription tool, as there are no shortcut commands or text editing directly integrated, it does everything you need from a basic transcription tool. And as it's a keyboard, it means should be able to work with any software you can run on your Android smartphone, so you can text edit, save, and export using that. Even better, it's free and there are no adverts to get in the way of you using it.

Once you’ve transcribed a file, you can then edit it from within the app. There’s support for more than 30 languages as well, making it the perfect app if you’re working abroad or with an international team. Another nice feature is punctuation command recognition, ensuring that your transcriptions are free from typos.

This app is underpinned by cloud technology, meaning you can access notes from any device (which is online). You’re able to share audio and text files to other iOS apps too, and when it comes to organizing them, you can view recordings in a comprehensive file.

3. Speechnotes

Speechnotes is yet another easy to use dictation app. A useful touch here is that you don’t need to create an account or anything like that; you just open up the app and press on the microphone icon, and you’re off.

The app is powered by Google voice recognition tech. When you’re recording a note, you can easily dictate punctuation marks through voice commands, or by using the built-in punctuation keyboard.

To make things even easier, you can quickly add names, signatures, greetings and other frequently used text by using a set of custom keys on the built-in keyboard. There’s automatic capitalization as well, and every change made to a note is saved to the cloud.

When it comes to customizing notes, you can access a plethora of fonts and text sizes. The app is free to download from the Google Play Store , but you can make in-app purchases to access premium features (there's also a browser version for Chrome).

4. Transcribe

Marketed as a personal assistant for turning videos and voice memos into text files, Transcribe is a popular dictation app that’s powered by AI. It lets you make high quality transcriptions by just hitting a button.

The app can transcribe any video or voice memo automatically, while supporting over 80 languages from across the world. While you can easily create notes with Transcribe, you can also import files from services such as Dropbox.

Once you’ve transcribed a file, you can export the raw text to a word processor to edit. The app is free to download, but you’ll have to make an in-app purchase if you want to make the most of these features in the long-term. There is a trial available, but it’s basically just 15 minutes of free transcription time. Transcribe is only available on iOS, though.

5. Windows Speech Recognition

If you don’t want to pay for speech recognition software, and you’re running Microsoft’s latest desktop OS, then you might be pleased to hear that speech-to-text is built into Windows.

Windows Speech Recognition, as it’s imaginatively named – and note that this is something different to Cortana, which offers basic commands and assistant capabilities – lets you not only execute commands via voice control, but also offers the ability to dictate into documents.

The sort of accuracy you get isn’t comparable with that offered by the likes of Dragon, but then again, you’re paying nothing to use it. It’s also possible to improve the accuracy by training the system by reading text, and giving it access to your documents to better learn your vocabulary. It’s definitely worth indulging in some training, particularly if you intend to use the voice recognition feature a fair bit.

The company has been busy boasting about its advances in terms of voice recognition powered by deep neural networks, especially since windows 10 and now for Windows 11 , and Microsoft is certainly priming us to expect impressive things in the future. The likely end-goal aim is for Cortana to do everything eventually, from voice commands to taking dictation.

Turn on Windows Speech Recognition by heading to the Control Panel (search for it, or right click the Start button and select it), then click on Ease of Access, and you will see the option to ‘start speech recognition’ (you’ll also spot the option to set up a microphone here, if you haven’t already done that).

Best speech to text software

Aside from what has already been covered above, there are an increasing number of apps available across all mobile devices for working with speech to text, not least because Google's speech recognition technology is available for use.

iTranslate Translator  is a speech-to-text app for iOS with a difference, in that it focuses on translating voice languages. Not only does it aim to translate different languages you hear into text for your own language, it also works to translate images such as photos you might take of signs in a foreign country and get a translation for them. In that way, iTranslate is a very different app, that takes the idea of speech-to-text in a novel direction, and by all accounts, does it well.

ListNote Speech-to-Text Notes  is another speech-to-text app that uses Google's speech recognition software, but this time does a more comprehensive job of integrating it with a note-taking program than many other apps. The text notes you record are searchable, and you can import/export with other text applications. Additionally there is a password protection option, which encrypts notes after the first 20 characters so that the beginning of the notes are searchable by you. There's also an organizer feature for your notes, using category or assigned color. The app is free on Android, but includes ads.

Voice Notes  is a simple app that aims to convert speech to text for making notes. This is refreshing, as it mixes Google's speech recognition technology with a simple note-taking app, so there are more features to play with here. You can categorize notes, set reminders, and import/export text accordingly.

SpeechTexter  is another speech-to-text app that aims to do more than just record your voice to a text file. This app is built specifically to work with social media, so that rather than sending messages, emails, Tweets, and similar, you can record your voice directly to the social media sites and send. There are also a number of language packs you can download for offline working if you want to use more than just English, which is handy.

Which speech-to-text app is best for you?

When deciding which speech-to-text app to use, first consider what your actual needs are, as free and budget  options may only provide basic features, so if you need to use advanced tools you may find a paid-for platform is better suited to you. Additionally, higher-end software can usually cater for every need, so do ensure you have a good idea of which features you think you may require from your speech-to-text app.

To test for the best speech-to-text apps we first set up an account with the relevant platform, then we tested the service to see how the software could be used for different purposes and in different situations. The aim was to push each speech-to-text platform to see how useful its basic tools were and also how easy it was to get to grips with any more advanced tools.

speech to text app not working

If Dictation on Mac doesn’t work as expected

If your Mac is having trouble recognizing your dictated text or spoken commands, something may not be set up correctly. Here are some solutions to try:

Be sure Dictation is turned on in Keyboard settings. See Turn on Dictation .

Open Keyboard settings for me

Choose the correct language and dialect.

Be sure you’re using the correct Dictation keyboard shortcut . See Set the Dictation keyboard shortcut .

If your Mac doesn’t have an internal microphone, make sure an external microphone is connected to your Mac and selected in Sound or Keyboard settings.

speech to text app not working

Open Sound settings for me

Be sure the microphone is not obstructed by objects, such as clothing or your body, while you’re speaking. Check the user guide that came with your Mac to locate the built-in microphone. See Get the Essentials guide for your Mac .

Position yourself as you would normally use your Mac, then speak clearly at a volume that’s not too quiet or too loud.

Avoid background noise. If you use Dictation in a noisy environment or a room with excessive echo, it may help to use a headset microphone.

On a Mac with Apple silicon , Dictation requests are processed on your device for supported languages—no internet connection is required. When you dictate in a search box, dictated text may be sent to the search provider in order to process the search. Additionally, you can dictate text of any length without a timeout. You can turn off Dictation manually, or it stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds.

Type text with your voice

You can speak to enter text in most places you type. You can even add common punctuation when you say "comma," "period," "question mark," "exclamation mark," or "exclamation point."

  • Speech won’t work if the spoken language doesn't match the device language.
  • Some voice commands aren’t yet supported in right-to-left languages.

Set up voice commands

  • At the bottom right, select the time or press Alt + Shift + s .

Edit your text with voice commands

To use a command, wait for your spoken text to clear from the box, then say your command.

To edit your text, use the following commands:

Use new dictation commands

Important: You can only use these new commands in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

You can now use multiple commands to perform the same action and use more natural language to edit text.

For example, “Move to the next letter” and “Right one letter” moves the cursor to the next letter.

Hi mspec55505,

welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community!

Re: "Speak text is not working. I have tried everything like all suggested remedies"

Sorry to hear this is not working for you, wondering which remedies you tried, and where you found them.

if you haven't already:

✽ you might try restarting your iPhone

(eg: deletes temporary files, re-establishes connections, may update recent setting changes, and often restores order if something is not working as expected: How to: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

✽ you might try updating your iPhone to the newest compatible update:

About iOS 17 Updates - Apple Support says: iOS 17.5.1 is the newest (eg: includes bug-fixes)

✽ Apple support's articles give step-by-step guidance:

Eg: How to: Hear iPhone speak the screen, selected text, and typing feedback - Apple Support

For Siri:  Say something like: “Speak screen.”  Learn how to use Siri .

If you are quite sure you've tried every thing : you might want to send feedback to Apple. Although it won't help immediately, and they likely won't reply, you feedback may help with improvements. Eg: If others are also experiencing a similar issue, we may see them addressed in a future update: Feedback - iPhone - Apple

All the best :-)

Text-to-Speech Issue on ChatGPT Web Version

1000235117

Same as this thread “Read Aloud” Not Working After Update - ChatGPT / Bugs - OpenAI Developer Forum

I encountered the same problem. The read-aloud feature on the web page is not working, but it can be used in the Android app. I also tried the iOS app, but it seems to not have this feature at all. I suspect the issue is due to an upgrade.

Your message implies that we might need to wait for another update from ChatGPT to possibly resolve the issue. Thank you.

The iOS app does have the feature. You need to long press the message and choose read aloud. It works in the iphone app but not in a desktop browser.

It must be related to the web version’s redesign because I used this feature before the redesign. After refreshing the page, it looked like this in the new version. The reason it works on Android, I guess, might be because the app hasn’t been updated yet. These are all my speculations, but I see many people discussing this issue in the bugs forum, so it will definitely be resolved quickly. Let’s wait together. Amitabha!

Yes, it’s unrelated to the latest voice announcement (I’m assuming of course, since it works on mobile.) It has worked fine for a long time before this week’s announcement.

:worried:

Hot damn I thought it was my pc who is the problem or i was the only one having this issue, since it took me only today to find this page. I even restarted my pc and all.

I ws using the webpage in version 3.5 on an iOS device and the text to speech worked fine in english, danish and german. In the mittle of my work I had a popup from openai asking me, if I would try version 4.0 for free. I said yes, and boom. Away was the feature. And now, after returning to 3.5, it is still gone.

Any updates on this? Mine also stoped working the following day after the 4o release!

At Morehouse, Biden says dissent should be heard because democracy is 'still the way'

President Biden speaks to graduating students at the Morehouse College commencement Sunday in Atlanta.

President Biden told Morehouse College's graduating class of 2024 that he's committed to serving Black voters while defending freedom and democracy in the face of "extremist forces" that he says threaten the soul of the nation.

With just six months until the general election, the speech, which was filled with religious themes of struggle and resilience, also served as a continuation of Biden's warning to his supporters of what he thinks the country would look like if Donald Trump is elected again.

"They don't see you in the future of America, but they're wrong," he said. "To me, we make history, not erase it. We know Black history is American history."

The president's commencement address at Morehouse, a historically Black school in Atlanta, also comes as polling shows potentially lower support for his reelection efforts among Black voters and young voters, and as campus protests over conflict in Gaza have disrupted graduations around the country.

Biden said he understood angst over the direction of the country, acknowledged "dissent about America's role in the world" and said that those who have different views should have their voices heard in the name of democracy.

"That's my commitment to you," he said. "To show you: democracy, democracy democracy — it's still the way."

His speech is also one of many events on his recent trip aimed at speaking to Black voters, following events with plaintiffs in the historic Brown v. Board Supreme Court case, meetings with Black Greek Letter Organizations, often known as the Divine Nine, and before he headlines an NAACP dinner in Detroit.

For weeks, several college and university campuses around the country have been roiled with student protests and encampments expressing opposition against Biden and U.S. policies and involvement around conflict in Gaza.

Morehouse has seen student demonstrations, but not occupation of campus spaces or clashes with law enforcement. Outside of the ceremony, a small number of protesters gathered while the commencement itself did not see any major disruptions.

Last week, Morehouse College President David Thomas said he would rather halt proceedings than have students escorted away for protesting.

"If my choice is 20 people being arrested on national TV on the Morehouse campus, taken away in zip ties during our commencement, before we would reach that point, I would conclude the ceremony," he said on NPR's Weekend Edition .

An attendee stands in protest with their back to President Biden as Biden speaks to graduating students at the Morehouse College commencement Sunday in Atlanta.

Those concerns did not come to pass. Apart from the heightened security and increased media presence, Biden's speech was met with a similar response to a typical college graduation ceremony.

More than 400 graduating students walked across the stage Sunday, and during Biden's speech a handful of students, some wearing keffiyehs , turned their chairs around to face away from the president.

After the ceremony, Morehouse issued a statement praising the graduating class and their intentionally muted response to Biden.

"It is fitting that a moment of organized, peaceful activism would occur on our campus while the world is watching to continue a critical conversation," the statement reads. "We are proud of the resilient class of 2024's unity in silent protest, showing their intentionality in strategy, communication, and coordination as a 414-person unit."

DeAngelo Fletcher, Morehouse College's valedictorian, closed his address to his classmates by addressing global conflict, particularly the Israel-Hamas war.

"For the first time in our lives, we've heard the global community sing one harmonious song that transcends language and culture," he said. "It is my sense as a Morehouse Man, nay — as a human being — to call for an immediate and a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip."

Biden's speech at Morehouse comes with intense scrutiny as many presidential horse race polls show the president lagging with young voters, Black voters and other nonwhite groups that helped propel him to a narrow victory against Trump in 2020.

Those polls — for now — signal a drop in support for Biden but not necessarily an equal shift toward Trump. There are also signs that some of the displeasure with Biden is more pronounced among people who aren't as likely to vote in November.

While facing a nominal challenge in the Democratic presidential primary, Biden's best-performing areas have often come in places with a large share of Black voters. For example, in Georgia's primary contest 95% of Black voters pulled a Democratic ballot, and Biden won 95% of the overall vote.

While some students, faculty and alumni expressed opposition to Biden's selection as the commencement speaker, reaction on campus during the graduation ceremony was largely positive.

Dr. Tiffany Johnson, a 50-year-old who came to the campus green at 4:30 a.m. to see her son graduate, was also excited to see Biden.

"He is the leader of the free world, the most important job in the world, and for him to come to speak to [Morehouse] graduates, to inspire them, is phenomenal," Johnson said.

Johnson said Black voters who might not support Biden are part of a "bandwagon" that do not understand what he has done for the community, and said his speech would be an ideal opportunity to share his accomplishments.

In the speech, Biden touted a track record that he says makes key investments in Black communities, including a record $16 billion funding package toward historically Black colleges and universities, protecting voting rights, and creating economic policies that strengthens Black businesses.
