Traditional master’s programs, university at buffalo.
The University at Buffalo’s (UB) Department of Psychology offers a Master of Arts (MA) degree in General Psychology with optional concentrations in Behavioral Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Social-Personality Psychology. Graduates of the MA in Psychology program are prepared for jobs in research, mental health, management, and administration, or to pursue doctoral study. The learning environment for MA students is equipped to give real-world research experience through lab work. A total of 30 credit hours are required for the degree, including a course in graduate statistics, a distribution course from each of the four concentration areas (Behavioral Neuroscience, Clinical, Cognitive, and Social), and 15 credits in electives. All students work closely with a mentor to complete a scholarly paper documented with research to answer an identified question. The UB program does not qualify graduates for independent practice.
Loyola University Chicago
Loyola University offers a terminal master’s program as well as a combined Master of Arts (MA) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Social Psychology. Of over 70 applicants per year, only 20% are accepted; of those, about one-third enroll in Loyola’s program. The terminal MA in Applied Social Psychology primarily prepares graduates for research specialist roles, working under the supervision of a PhD supervisor in settings including market research firms, research centers, and government agencies. The master’s program at Loyola comprises 30 credit hours and requires students to complete a master’s thesis to graduate. The program aims to train professionals to design and implement changes related to the welfare of individuals, groups, organizations, and society. Students will study the theory and principles of social psychology while simultaneously pursuing their specialized interests. The program trains graduates to be effective communicators, sharing through presentations, writing, and teaching. Loyola also offers a five-year degree program for a Bachelor of Science (BS)/MA in Applied Social Psychology. In this track, students will complete 120 credit hours by the end of their fourth year and finish their master’s degree in their fifth year. The PhD in Applied Social Psychology also includes the MA degree in its curriculum.
Traditional Doctoral Programs
Ohio state university.
Ohio State University (OSU) offers one of the top graduate social psychology programs in the nation as ranked by US News & World Report in their Best Graduate Schools in Social Psychology ranking. The doctoral program focuses on theoretical foundational coursework to develop students’ skills in conceptual analysis of social behavior and social problems. Before entering the doctoral portion of the program, all students are involved in a research project in collaboration with a social psychology faculty member. Students are expected to complete coursework in two minor areas from inside the psychology department, such as cognitive or quantitative psychology, or outside the psychology department, such as political science. In the third year of study, students are formally admitted into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program and spend the remainder of the year targeting independent objectives, with an additional one to two years spent completing a PhD dissertation. A one-year predoctoral internship may be required.
University of Michigan
The University of Michigan’s (Michigan) Department of Psychology offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Social Psychology that has been recognized in US News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools in Social Psychology. Michigan’s program has 18 core faculty and 10 affiliated faculty to instruct an average of 30 graduate students enrolled at one time. Michigan offers several interdisciplinary training programs for social psychology students, including Culture & Cognition (Department of Anthropology); Decision (multiple departments); Evolution and Human Adaptation; Organization Studies; Social Work and Psychology; and Women’s Studies and Psychology. The social psychology program is research-heavy; students have opportunities to work with researchers at Michigan’s top facilities. Past program graduates have been offered faculty and research positions at some of the nation’s leading colleges and universities. While the entire program can take as little as four years to complete, most candidates complete the coursework in five years.
Harvard University
Students in the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at Harvard University are taught to understand the human experience and social behaviors. Study focuses on neural and physiological aspects (in group and individual behavior) and social and cultural contexts (how people think, feel, and act). Harvard’s program encourages students to meet at “intersections,” interacting with other areas of psychology (such as cognitive neuroscience), with other departments (such as Economics and Sociology), and with Harvard professional schools (like the Law School, Business School, and the Medical School). A select number of students are enrolled at any given time among all five of the psychology research programs. The research-oriented program prepares graduates to become research psychologists, typically in academia. Other graduates may work in government, consulting firms, or social service agencies. While some students can complete the program in four years, most take five to six years. Harvard considers its program “quite selective,” requiring excellent grades, high GRE scores (optional for fall 2023 admission), and persuasive recommendations. It also emphasizes candidates’ statements of purpose in order to ensure the students have interests compatible with the department.
Online and Hybrid Programs

Students and faculty in Social Psychology seek to understand human experiences and behaviors in social settings. Our research and teaching span levels of analysis--from the neural and physiological underpinnings of social cognition, through individual and group behavior, to the social and cultural contexts within which people think, feel, and act. Much of our work is done at intersections--with other areas of psychology, such as cognitive neuroscience and developmental psychology; with other departments, such as Economics and Sociology; and with Harvard professional schools, such as the Law School, the Business School, the Medical School, and the Kennedy School of Government.
Overall, we seek to develop new understanding about how people perceive themselves and others, how people relate to one another, and how social psychological knowledge can be used to make constructive differences in people's lives.

Search formPsychology makes top 10 in us news & world report ranking. Undergraduate program is ninth among public universitiesIn its first time being ranked by US News & World Report , UC Irvine’s undergraduate psychology program came in ninth among public universities and 20th among all public and private universities nationwide. “While our esteemed faculty are widely recognized for their impactful research addressing societal challenges, this ranking underscores our unwavering dedication to delivering a first-rate undergraduate education,” says Nicholas Scurich , professor and chair of psychological science. “This achievement is a testament to the hard work and passion of everyone in our department. We remain committed to providing the best possible education to our undergraduate students, empowering them to excel in their future careers.” The US News & World Report’s 2023-24 list of “Best Colleges,” released today, also ranked UCI 10th among the nation’s public universities – and 33rd overall. The rankings of undergraduate psychology programs are based on the results of surveys sent to department chairs and senior faculty at psychology departments at a regionally accredited institution that awarded a medium to large number of bachelor's degrees in psychology. At UCI, psychology is administered by the Department of Psychological Science in the School of Social Ecology and the Department of Cognitive Sciences in the School of Social Sciences. “I am delighted, but not at all surprised, to see our undergraduate psychology program receive such high national recognition,” says Jon Gould , dean of the School of Social Ecology. “Our faculty are not only world-class researchers, but they are also dedicated to providing a top-flight education to undergraduate students, many of whom are the first in their family to attend college. That our program has achieved these heights coming on the heels of the pandemic is further proof of the creativity and adaptability of our faculty and staff.” The undergraduate psychological science program has about 1,200 students. Courses include study in developmental, social, health and abnormal psychology, as well as environmental, clinical, and community psychology. A number of advanced courses delve into the psychological aspects of important societal issues and problems, such as child abuse, violence, divorce, work and family, and community health. Psychological science undergraduates also gain rigorous training in research methods and statistics. All are required to gain experience in internships through the School of Social Ecology’s Field Study Program . Opportunities for field study for psychological science majors are offered in myriad settings, including schools, child care facilities, counseling centers, senior citizen centers, hospitals and other health care settings, and social service agencies. Undergrads also can participate in faculty research projects. Last year, US News ranked UCI’s psychology graduate program 14th among public universities . In its latest rankings, UCI ranked No. 12 overall in the subcategory of social mobility, which rates the institutions that enroll and graduate large proportions of students awarded federal Pell Grants — given to undergraduates who display exceptional financial need. Today, 38 percent of UCI’s undergraduates receive Pell Grants, and the campus is among the best in the nation for the graduation rate of its Pell Grant recipients. In 2023, 3,636 earned bachelor’s degrees. Available online , the results come on the heels of UCI being ranked ninth in the nation among public universities for best value in the Princeton Review college survey. The ratings service cited UCI’s stellar academics, affordability through comparatively lower tuition costs and generous financial aid, and strong career prospects for graduates. On Sept. 7, The New York Times ranked UCI No. 16 on its College-Access Index, a list of the country’s 286 most selective universities placed in order of economic diversity. UCI was rated first among public universities in California and tied for No. 1 among members of the prestigious Association of American Universities. For its 2023-24 Best Colleges in America list, Money again ranked UCI at the top . It was one of 34 U.S. universities to receive a five-star rating (the highest possible), and Money lauded the campus for offering a high-quality education, for its affordability and for its student outcomes.
