PHD STUDENT IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, ONCOLOGY AND HEMATOLOGY

Job information, offer description.

Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine in Warsaw, Poland, offers three  PhD candidate positions in the project “ Molecular mechanisms of DNA damage triggered by PIM kinases inhibition and its consequences for activation of innate immunity and anti-tumor response in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma” , supervised by prof. Przemysław Juszczyński, MD, PhD.

Our group has recently demonstrated that blocking the activity of PIM kinases induces lymphoma cell death, but simultaneously increases the susceptibility of the tumor to the immune system attack (DOI:10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-21-1023). We have recently  started to characterize additional immunomodulatory mechanisms associated with PIM kinase inhibition. Since generated inflammatory signals may reshape tumor microenvironment from “cold” to “hot”, which helps the immune system to combat the tumor, we plan to characterize and understand in detail the mechanisms of PIM kinase inhibition-mediated immunomodulation.

Institute of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine is one of the leading research institutions in Poland and a reference hematooncology center. Studies will be performed in a young, dynamic group, providing opportunities for successful publishing of research results. We offer scientific development oportunities, collaboration  with leading research institutions nationally and internationally and access to cutting-edge research technologies.

Selected candidates will be enrolled to a do doctoral school. We offer two PhD fellowships ( 5000 PLN ) for the first two years, increased  after the interim evaluation (after 2 years).

International Master’s Students: Five Must-have Experiences to Launch Your Career Before You Leave Duke

As an international master’s student, the prevailing job-hunting strategy that I heard of among my peers can be summarized in one phrase: “sea application,” a term in Chinese that means applying to as many jobs as possible. However, it wasn’t until my second year of the program, when I began seeking advice from the Career Center and professional development team at The Graduate School, that I realized what I had missed:

Networking and referrals are critical for students (and professionals) to land an internship or a full-time job in the U.S. As Duke students, we have a strong alumni network to rely on, so that we can connect with alumni, seek their advice, get referrals, and learn about job openings even before they are posted. Yes, this sounds vague and intimidating. I felt the same way. I was literally shocked when I heard that I could invite alumni for a coffee chat, as this “coffee chat” thing didn’t exist in my culture.

Then I had my second discovery: there are also many resources offered by Duke to prepare us for real-world networking, including programs that help us identify our strengths, interests, and values so that we know our “dream jobs,” and events that allow us to practice the skill of networking in a zero-risk way.

Here are some events and programs from my second year that I personally experienced and highly recommend to all fellow international master’s students to try, as early as possible.

1. Write an alum profile.

The alumni profiles series is a wonderful opportunity to do an informational interview with an alum whose career path inspires you. And it provides a very easy first step to try networking. (Alumni love to be interviewed, too!) I interviewed an alumna of my program, Megan Mayhew-Bergman , and she candidly shared with me her struggles, aspirations and strategies along her journey of transitions from a business consultant to a fiction writer, environmental journalist, educator, and entrepreneur.

I still think about our conversation a lot because I also aspire to be a writer and had worked in the business world. The conversation not only taught me pragmatic strategies for making career transitions; it has also been inspiring to talk to someone who has achieved her dream so I then know my goals are within reach, too. I highly recommend writing an alum profile not only for the insightful conversations it can spark, but also for the professional editing support available through The Graduate School’s professional development team. Your story can be your first publication on the Duke Graduate School website with your bio and photo!

2. Attend a CliftonStrengths workshop (and do the assessment).

I first learned about the CliftonStrengths assessment when an employer told me they thought highly of it. I recommend this assessment and the workshop as a must-have experience at Duke for two reasons: first, it’s free to you thanks to Duke Graduate School’s purchase ( just request a free code to take the assessment); second, the assessment and workshop help you explore your hidden strengths in an interactive way.

During the assessment, I was very surprised to learn that my top strength is “context,” which basically means I am adept at “thinking about the past.” This revelation came together during the workshop when the facilitator, Melissa Bostrom , asked us to reflect upon how our past experiences aligned with our strengths. It suddenly made sense to me: I have always found fulfillment in historic research and have voluntarily engaged in it in my previous jobs. This assessment and workshop offer a great, free opportunity to guide your self-discovery and learn how to maximize your strengths in your career journey. I highly recommend them!

3. Join an alumni sharing and speed networking event like “The Journey After Duke.”

A student speaks with an alum at a Journey After Duke networking event

“ The Journey after Duke ” is a unique event offered each semester that combines a panel discussion and a speed networking session. Initially, when I registered for the event, I had only a vague idea that I would be meeting with alumni and listening to their career advice. However, the event exceeded my expectations in multiple ways.

I heard honest sharing from alumni of diverse backgrounds: One of the panelists, Dr. Jeannie Karl , shared how she struggled between living up to her Asian parents’ expectations (to become a professor) and listening to her own inner voice (to pursue a career in industry).

The speed networking was dynamic, fun, and informative. Unlike my previous experiences with speed networking where alumni changed tables every 15 minutes, at "The Journey after Duke," it was the students who changed tables. This format allowed me to meet and engage with over 15 alumni in a short span of time! While the time for conversation was limited, it provided an excellent opportunity to adapt to the fast-paced nature of networking and was surprisingly fun. The alumni were easy-going and encouraging. I recommend keeping an eye out for the next “Journey after Duke” event or similar networking events.

August 28, 2000   Chechnya Is Quieter, but Still a Deadly Quagmire By MICHAEL R. GORDON   James Hill for The New York Times A Russian soldier stood guard near the market in Grozny while a woman and her children waited for a bus. Issues in Depth • Complete Coverage: Assault on Chechnya • Russia's New Direction Forum • Join a Discussion on Putin and the Direction of Russia Related Web Sites • Russian Government Internet Network • Chechen Republic Online • Official Website of the Chechen Islamic Rebels (in Russian) James Hill for The New York Times Akhmad Kadyrov, whom Moscow has named to administer Chechnya and who has survived several assassination attempts, embraced a friend at his birthday party at his home while some of his guards watched. SENTORA-YURT, Russia, Aug. 23 -- The Russian-appointed leader of Chechnya gestured toward the crowd that had gathered to wish him a happy 49th birthday at his heavily guarded home in this Chechen town. Some, he noted dryly, could well be rebel agents. "They are everywhere and nowhere," Akhmad Kadyrov said with a shrug. "Some of them might even be among these people." Mr. Kadyrov ought to know. He has already survived several assassination attempts, including one two months ago, which was averted when a huge bomb was discovered along the road 100 yards from his house. Last year, a bomb that was apparently intended for Mr. Kadyrov killed five of his relatives. It is just another week in Chechnya, a battered, dispirited but proud Caucasus land that continues to present Russia's gravest security challenge. A year after Russian troops poured into the region, the breakaway republic is no longer the scene of major Russian artillery barrages and pitched battles involving thousands of soldiers against rebels who are seeking an independent republic. But the war has not gone away. Russian casualties continue every week as the fighting has shifted from large-scale assaults to skirmishing and ambushes that have turned Chechnya into a nasty quagmire for the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin, and his top generals. Almost everyone seems to agree that Russian firepower alone cannot bring an end to the fighting and that a political solution is necessary. That is where Mr. Kadyrov is supposed to come in, but so far a resolution of the conflict seems as distant as ever. "The war can't be ended by military means," Mr. Kadyrov said. "We Chechens have to stop it ourselves. If we can't, the war will go on for 10 or 20 years." In the baking summer heat, Chechnya often seems deceptively quiet. There is a weary routine about the searches at the Russian checkpoints, the noisy helicopter flights to and from the Russian strongholds and the bustle at Chechen marketplaces. Even a good day, however, can be grim and frighteningly unpredictable. Grozny, Chechnya's nominal capital and a ruin of a city, still lacks gas, electricity and any visible efforts at restoration. Only a few thousand people still seem to live there, but now they include rebels who have managed to sneak back into city. They shoot at the Russian checkpoints at night, prompting noisy fire fights that residents say keep them awake. Squads of Kalashnikov-bearing Russian soldiers move past the kiosks and makeshift shops but do not linger long. In one brazen attack this week, two Russian soldiers were shot to death at point-blank range while they were shopping in Grozny's central market. "It's becoming more and more dangerous," said Yuri Vasilkov, a 19-year old draftee from the southern Russian town of Taganrog, who was manning a Grozny checkpoint. "A major attack could come at any time -- tonight, tomorrow, now." Officially, Russian generals contend that this is nothing to worry about. The guerrilla attacks, they insist, are just the final phase of a terrible war that is all but won. The military, in fact, has already made plans to station a permanent garrison in Chechnya to secure the peace. It consists primary of the army's newly created 42nd Division, whose members are being sent to four strategic locations. With 15,000 members, the unit is larger and better equipped than most. But at Borzoy, a mountain village that sits astride a potential rebel supply corridor to Georgia, half of the division's troops are young conscripts with no previous experience in Chechnya. The other half are "kontraktniki," essentially mercenaries who often have some military experience and fight for pay. "This is peace," insists Col. Andrei Fyodorov, 39, who commands the Borzoy detachment. "The situation is under control." Other Russian officers, however, have a dimmer view. They say the rebels may only have several thousand full-time fighters compared with the approximately 80,000 soldiers and policeman the Kremlin has sent to Chechnya. But the rebels have also adapted their tactics. Instead of mounting large and costly attacks against major Russian bases and troop concentrations, the rebels plant mines, set off bombs and try to pick off small groups of soldiers -- pinprick attacks that are slowly bleeding Russian forces. According to official statistics, 17 Russian troops were killed and 52 wounded last week, a tranquil week by Chechnya standards. All told, more than 2,500 Russian fighters have been killed and 7,500 wounded in the last year. The rebels have also sought to infiltrate village administrations throughout Chechnya, hoping to gain control of food and other supplies so they can divert them to their fighters in the woods and mountains. When Russian officials uncovered a rebel camp last month in the Shatoy mountain region they discovered that it was filled with goods sent to aid the civilian population. Village officials who resist the rebels are often the targets of attacks, along with their relatives. In the last two weeks, local officials in Meskety, Nozhay-Yurt and Urus-Martan have been attacked. "Yes, we have cases where local administrations have been infiltrated," Mr. Kadyrov said. "We are setting up a new commission now to check all of the officials in Chechnya, to find out who is charge of what and check all aspects of what they are doing." Certainly, nobody knows the difficulty of controlling Chechnya better than Mr. Kadyrov, whom Mr. Putin appointed two months ago to administer the republic. Mr. Kadyrov is the first Chechen leader to be installed by Moscow since 1996. A former Muslim cleric, Mr. Kadyrov opposed the Russians during the first Chechen war, from 1994 to 1996, which routed Russian forces and gave Chechnya de facto independence. Mr. Kadyrov supported Aslan Maskhadov, the Chechen commander who became the first president of the breakaway republic after that war. But after Islamic militants based in Chechnya invaded neighboring Dagestan and Russian troops responded by invading Chechnya, Mr. Kadyrov broke with Mr. Maskhadov and decided to work with the Russians. Each has denounced the other as a traitor, dimming the already bleak prospect for negotiations. Mr. Kadyrov appeared relaxed at his birthday celebration with his family and Chechen officials, even as machine-gun toting bodyguards stood by, chanting Muslim prayers before feasting on lamb, potatoes and soft drinks. "It does not matter if we are part of Russia or independent," Mr. Kadyrov said. "What does a man really need? He needs a permanent job and salary. And he needs to be able to leave his house safely to go work and to come back safely in the evening. That is what freedom means. And where should we go? We are surrounded by Russia." To encourage a political solution, he has negotiated with several field commanders, including Ruslan Gelayev. Several minor rebel leaders have come over to his side. But Mr. Kadyrov says he will never make a deal with Shamil Basayev or Khattab, two of the best-known rebel commanders, or with Mr. Maskhadov. Some critics doubt that Mr. Kadyrov will be able to establish his authority in Chechnya. They note that he cannot even control Bislan Gantamirov, a former mayor of Grozny who was jailed for embezzlement and released by the Russians so that he could fight on their side. Unlike Mr. Kadyrov, Mr. Gantamirov controls a Chechen militia, and he has especially close ties with much of the Russian military. When Mr. Kadyrov fired some local officials loyal to Mr. Gantamirov, the former Grozny mayor led a band of his men to Gudermes, the administrative capital and site of Mr. Kadyrov's government headquarters. It was a blunt show of force, and relations between the two pro-Moscow Chechens are still frosty. "Kadyrov does not have the means to control the situation inside the Chechen republic," said Malik Saidullayev, a Chechen businessman and a rival. Mr. Kadyrov asserts that he can prevail. He plans to attend a religious conference in the United States and, making use of his common ground with them as a former cleric, ask the Arab members not to provide the financial support that has been coming in to the rebels from Muslims around the world. His hardest task, however, is to persuade the Chechen people that they have more to gain by accepting Russian control over their republic and putting down their guns. For all the Russian firepower, he says, the fighting will not end until ordinary Chechens stop giving aid and sanctuary to the rebels. "We are hiding them," Mr. Kadyrov said. "We Chechens, not Kadyrov. We give them shelter. We feed them. If we closed all the doors to them, then everyone would see them. This is the only way to solve this problem."

3 tips for including internship experience in a cover letter.

How to stand out from the crowd as a new grad with internship experience

If you are a fresh graduate looking for a new job, a cover letter can help paint a helpful context of who you are and why you would be an excellent fit for the company. For seasoned professionals with considerable career milestones, resumes are often adequate to show their skillsets and how they would perform at a new job. Indicators like the type of company, pace of promotion, and scope of responsibilities paint a picture for the hiring managers of how they can expect the candidate to perform even before the interviews.

The good news for new graduates is that they are on an even playing field as they embark on a new career path with their peers. The downside is the need for additional information for the candidate to stand out from the crowd. Internship experience can be an advantage if leveraged and narrated correctly. When a company hires a new graduate, it knows the lack of experience and proof points to consider in the candidate. They are therefore looking for genuine interest, willingness to learn, and potential in new grads. If you have internship experience, including them in your cover letter is an excellent opportunity to feature these qualities. Here are a few tips on how to do this best.

Showcase Your Decision-making Process

One risk of hiring new graduates is that they may quit quickly if they find that the industry or the job function is not what they expected. If you have interned at a similar company, you can explain how that experience solidified your interest in the field and helped you narrow down the jobs you are genuinely interested in. By discussing your decision-making process and how the internship provided real-life perspective, you can demonstrate that you are a knowledgeable decision-maker rather than someone who is simply influenced by outside perspectives.

On the other hand, if you interned in an entirely different industry and position, you can use this experience to demonstrate that you discovered what you truly want to pursue. Highlight the positive lessons learned during the internship and avoid speaking negatively about past opportunities. The crucial point is to showcase what you gained from the experience and how it has strengthened your interest in the current company and role.

Be Truthful About The Scope Of Your Experience

Internship experiences can vary widely depending on the company, from simply shadowing an employee to conducting in-depth analysis or participating in structured rotational programs. However, it's important to note that internships typically don't involve holding leadership positions or having significant decision-making authority. It's essential to be honest about your role and responsibilities during an internship, as exaggerating or misrepresenting your experience will likely be noticed by hiring managers.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

In addition, you should not disclose any confidential information about the company at any time. Keep your account of the experience brief and truthful.

Highlight Relevant Skillsets And Potential

If your previous internship provided you with the skills described in the job requirements for the position you are applying for, be sure to emphasize this and explain how you used those skills, as well as your eagerness to further develop them. For example, if you gained experience in analyzing complex datasets during your internship, highlight how you enhanced the company's training through your independent learning efforts, express your enthusiasm for the skill, and illustrate how it contributed to the team's goals to demonstrate your understanding of the practical application of your work. This can show your potential for growth, desire to learn, and proactive orientation towards your job, attributes all hiring managers seek.

When hiring recent graduates, hiring managers are aware that the candidates do not have extensive pre-existing skill sets or decision-making experience. They are hired with the expectation to learn quickly, contribute enough to offset the onboarding and training efforts, and hopefully grow within the company. Including an internship experience in your cover letter can help alleviate any concerns the hiring manager may have about your genuine interest in the company and role, and your desire to learn. It also provides a context for the kind of employee you will be, in ways a resume cannot for new grads.

Prolific Philadelphia Phillies Closer Has New Job as Ancient Roman Archaeologist

  • Philadelphia Phillies

It's not everyday you're throwing the final pitch to win a World Series for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Perhaps just as uncommon is excavating ancient Roman archaelogical sites in a small town in Italy.

But both? The odds have to be astronomical.

And yet, here is former Phillies closer Brad Lidge, living his best life in Murlo, Italy doing just that after earning his master degree in Ancient Roman Archaeology in the midst of pursuing his PhD.

Lidge actually began pursuing his bachelors degree from Regis University out of Denver while playing baseball. After he retired, Lidge went on to complete his graduate program.

“The first site I ever excavated was Carsulae, in 2014,” Lidge told the Philadelphia Inquirer . “The first day, I’m digging around the complex, and within probably five minutes, I scraped some soil off, and bang! There’s two Roman coins there. And I was just like, ‘Oh my god, this is incredible.’ Just kind of a lucky, lucky deal.”

Lidge is now getting a rush out of unearthing history. Speaking with the Denver Post over two months ago about this very same subject, the former Phillies likened it to being like Indiana Jones.

“It was the most Indiana Jones-like week I’ve ever spent in the field,” Lidge said. “We were climbing up and down the sides of mountains and going into caves. It was really fun. It was awesome.”

As for Lidge's current work in Italy, it is being led by a Philadelphia-native, Dr. Anthony Tuck the chair of classics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

“I grew up in Philadelphia, so I was pretty psyched to meet someone who was part of the Phillies’ 2008 World Series championship,” Tuck told the Denver Post. “Brad first came to Poggio Civitate in 2022 and already had a pretty deep foundation of experience. He instantly fit right in with our team.

“It’s not surprising to me. He’s somebody who grew up in an environment with the mechanics of a team-based environment. It fits perfectly with what we do with an archeology field project.”

It truly is never too late to change your career path and follow your dreams.

Back to ‘Immigration system statistics, year ending June 2024’ contents page .

Data relates to the year ending June 2024 and all comparisons are with the year ending June 2023 (unless indicated otherwise). All data includes dependants, unless indicated otherwise.

1. Work-related visas

Between 2009 and 2019 the number of work visas granted were relatively stable. The COVID-19 pandemic restricted global travel throughout 2020 and parts of 2021, leading to a temporary fall in visa grants. On 31 January 2020 the UK left the European Union ( EU ) and following a ‘transition period’, which came to an end on 31 December 2020, made a number of changes to the UK Immigration system and at the same time ended freedom of movement between the UK and EU countries. These various changes led to a change in immigration for work.

There were 286,382 visas granted to main applicants in all work categories in the year ending June 2024, 11% fewer than the previous year, but more than double (+109%) 2019 levels.

Since the beginning of 2021, there has been an increase in the number of work visas granted, with ‘Health and Care Worker’ visa numbers in particular growing sharply between year ending September 2022 and year ending September 2023, following the expansion of the route in February 2022 to boost the social care workforce. The growth in this route was accompanied by a large increase in the number of work-related dependant visas granted, with the majority of all work dependants (62%) over the latest 3 years being on the ‘Health and Care Worker’ visa.

In December 2023, the Home Office announced a set of policy changes , impacting who can apply for work visas, which came into effect at various points in 2024. The number of ‘Health and Care Worker’ visas issued to main applicants has fallen in the most recent quarter – down 81% between April and June 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. Dependant visas have also fallen by 66% over the same period.

Other skilled work routes and ‘Temporary Worker’ visas also increased from 2021, but their numbers have levelled off in the last 2 years.

Figure 1: Work visas granted to main applicants between the year ending June 2014 and the year ending June 2024

Source: Entry clearance visa applications and outcomes – Vis_D02

  • The ‘Worker’ visa line divides after 2021 (denoted by the dashed lines), when the ‘Health and Care’ visa was introduced alongside other skilled work. Prior to this, the ‘Worker’ category is comprised of visas under the previous ‘Tier 2’ points-based system.

1.1 Health and Care Workers, other skilled work routes, and their family members

There were 89,095 ‘Health and Care Worker’ visas granted to main applicants in the year ending June 2024, a 26% decrease compared to the previous year.

The increase in ‘Health and Care Worker’ visas in the 2 years between 2021 and 2023 (as shown in Figure 1 ), was due to more care workers and home carers coming to the UK, which peaked at 88,814 in the year ending December 2023. However, the number of care workers and home carers issued visas have fallen since the latter part of 2023. The fall in applications and grants towards the end of 2023 is likely due to more scrutiny applied by the Home Office to employers in the health and social care sector, and compliance activity taken against employers of migrant workers, as well as the recent policy measures affecting care workers introduced in March and April of this year. The number of grants for ‘Health and Care Worker’ main applicants fell by 81% to 6,564 grants between April and June 2024, compared with the same period in 2023 when there were 35,470 grants.

The number of grants to main applicants on other routes in the ‘Worker’ category (which includes ‘Skilled Worker’ visas) has increased by 79% since 2021, but in the latest year has fallen by 3%.

Figure 2: Visas granted to dependants of work visa holders by visa route, between the year ending June 2019 and the year ending June 2024

  • The ‘Skilled Worker’ and ‘Health and Care Worker’ visas were introduced in 2020 and together replaced the ‘Tier 2 – General’ visa.

Figure 2 shows that the introduction of the ‘Health and Care’ and ‘Skilled Worker’ routes contributed to a large overall increase in visas issued to work dependants, from 53,260 in year ending June 2019 to 260,392 in year ending June 2024, with Health and Care’ dependants alone accounting for 69% of all work dependants in the latest year.

In the year ending June 2024, visas issued to dependants on the ‘Health and Care’ route were higher than visas issued to main applicants, with approximately 2 dependants per main applicant. By contrast, those on ‘Skilled Worker’ visas brought less than one dependant per main applicant. However, the number of ‘Health and Care’ dependants in the second quarter of 2024 was 15,198, 68% lower than the first quarter of 2024. This decrease in grants is likely influenced by falls in grants to main applicants since the third quarter of 2023, and the recent policy change for care worker dependants .

1.2 Temporary workers

The number of ‘Temporary Worker’ visas granted to main applicants in the year ending June 2024 was 77,419. This is slightly higher (+3%) than the previous year but almost double (+90%) the number in the year ending June 2019 (40,702), due to the growth in the ‘Seasonal Worker’ visa route.

In the year ending June 2024, 44% of ‘Temporary Worker’ visas granted to main applicants were for seasonal work, 31% were under the ‘Youth Mobility Scheme’ and the remaining 25% were for other temporary work.

Figure 3: ‘Temporary Worker’ visas granted to main applicants between the year ending June 2019 and the year ending June 2024

Figure 3 shows grants of ‘Seasonal Worker’ visas in the year ending June 2024 increased by 5% to 34,332 compared with the previous year. The ‘Seasonal Worker’ route was launched in March 2019 with the number of visas that could be granted limited to 2,500 per year. The annual quota has since increased to 47,000 for 2024, which partly explains the overall growth in ‘Temporary Worker’ visas issued over the last few years.

Whilst ‘Seasonal Worker’ visas have grown slightly in the latest year, the nationalities of applicants have changed. Central Asian nationalities (such as Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan) have together grown by 23% to 26,230 and represent three-quarters (76%) of grants in the latest year. Ukrainian nationals, in contrast have fallen by 62% to 1,208, following the start of the war in Ukraine and the launch of the Ukraine visa schemes in 2022.

The number of ‘Youth Mobility Scheme’ visas issued increased by 6% to 24,091 in the year ending June 2024 compared with the previous year. The rise in Youth Mobility since the year ending June 2021 could reflect a bounce-back for the scheme which was heavily impacted by travel restrictions during the pandemic, but recent numbers also include the addition of the India Young Professionals Scheme , which held its first ballot in February 2023. The route has a quota of 3,000 places each year, and in the year ending June 2024, there were 2,234 grants to Indian nationals under this scheme.

2. Work-related extensions

In the year ending June 2024, grants of an extension into work routes for main applicants increased by 38% compared to the previous year, to 378,732, primarily driven by extensions in the ‘Health and Care Worker’, ‘Skilled Worker’ and ‘Graduate’ work routes.

Analysis from the Migrant journey: 2023 report shows that of those arriving on work routes in 2018, 38% still held valid or indefinite leave 5 years later. This suggests most workers do not remain in the UK indefinitely, although this percentage has increased, from 23% for workers arriving in 2012.

The proportion who remain and are granted indefinite leave varies by route, and is considerably higher in the ‘Investor, business development and talent’ visa category where 77% of main applicants held valid leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain after 5 years. ‘Temporary Workers’ by the nature of their visa are less likely to stay long term, needing to obtain a new type of visa to do so, and only 14% who arrived on a temporary worker visa still held leave 5 years later.

2.1 Graduate route

The Graduate route was introduced on 1 July 2021 and allows students who have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree or other eligible course to stay in the UK for a period after their studies to work or look for work.

A total of 147,051 Graduate route extensions were granted to main applicants in the year ending June 2024, 49% higher than in the year ending June 2023 (98,396). The Graduate route accounted for 39% of extensions to main applicants into the Work category.

There were also 49,721 grants to dependants on the Graduate route in the year ending June 2024, which was more than twice the number compared to the previous year (21,411).

In the year ending June 2024, Indian nationals represented the largest group of students granted leave to remain on the Graduate route (67,529), representing almost half (46%) of grants of Graduate route extensions to main applicants.

Around a third (32%) of students who came to the end of their studies in 2023 switched to the Graduate route (source: Analysis of migrants use of the Graduate route ).

3. Other related data

The Home Office publishes the number of ‘Skilled Worker’ and ‘Health and Care Worker’ visa applications by month in the Monthly monitoring of entry clearance visa applications publication.

The Office for National Statistics ( ONS ) publish long-term international migration estimates . These are statistics under development that estimate the number of people immigrating to and emigrating from the UK for 12 months or more.

According to the Labour Force Survey statistics from April to June 2024, published in the ONS Labour market overview, UK: August 2024 release , the number of non-UK nationals working in the UK has increased by 179,000 (+4%) in the past year to 4.47 million. There were an estimated 2.35 million non- EU nationals working in the UK, 214,000 higher (+10%) than a year earlier and an estimated 2.12 million EU nationals working in the UK, 35,000 lower (-2%) than a year earlier.

3.1 Sponsorship licensing for work and study

At the end of June 2024, there were 102,167 organisations and institutions registered as licensed sponsors for work and study.

Home Office management information indicates that there were 11,620 decisions on applications for sponsor licences between April to June 2024, 27% more than in April to June 2023 (9,153). Of these, 8,098 licenses were granted, and 3,522 applications were not granted (including both applications withdrawn and those rejected).

This data also shows that there were 50,488 decisions made in the year ending June 2024, compared to 32,791 in the year ending June 2023. Of these decisions, 38,235 licences were granted (51% higher than the year before), and 12,253 were not granted (including both applications withdrawn and those rejected).

4. About these statistics

The statistics in this section provide an indication of the number of people who have an intention to enter the UK for work reasons. Further information and definitions can be found in the user guide .

Entry clearance visas allow an individual to enter and stay in the UK within the period for which the visa is valid. Data in this section refers to the number of Entry clearance visas granted for work reasons within the period. If an individual was granted a visa more than once in a given period, this has been counted as multiple grants in the statistics.

Year-on-year comparisons of the number of decisions can be affected by quarterly fluctuations in the data. These fluctuations can be examined in the quarterly data in the published tables. Year ending comparisons will also include impacts resulting from the travel restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Extensions of temporary stay in the UK relate to individuals inside the UK extending or changing the status of their right to stay in the UK. An individual is required to apply for an extension or change in status before their existing permission to enter or stay in the UK expires.

The statistics in this chapter show the number of grants and refusals on applications for extension of temporary stay in the UK. One individual may have made multiple applications for an extension, so may account for multiple decisions. Data in this section includes dependants and takes account of the outcomes of reconsiderations and appeals.

We have temporarily paused publication of the ‘Sponsored work visas by occupation and industry’ datasets, with the latest available data currently up to the end of March 2024. For applications in sponsored work visa routes, the Home Office has to use the latest Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) framework, which is a common classification of jobs in the UK (for example, care workers or cyber security professionals) overseen by the Office for National Statistics ( ONS ). The pause is to allow us to investigate the differences between the old and new ONS frameworks and apply the new structure to Home Office sponsorship data. The intention is for this to enable us to produce comparable figures pre and post-change, and allow for future reporting that preserves the integrity and consistency of the analysis.
