Film Review of 3 Idiots For Students

Description of the 3 idiots film.

The three essential roles of the 3 Idiots film are Aamir Khan as Rancchoddas "Rancho" Shyamaldas Chanchad or Phunsukh Wangdu, R. Madhavan as Farhan Qureshi, Sharman Joshi as Raju Rastogi. They studied engineering at the Imperial College of Engineering and shared a room in a hostel. Apart from them, the additional stars are Kareena Kapoor as Pia, Omi Vaidya as Chatur Ramalingam (Silencer), Boman Irani as Viru Sahastrebuddhe (Virus), Parikshit Sahni as Mr. Qureshi,  and Mona Singh as Mona Sahastrebuddhe (pia’s sister).

The Imperial College of Engineering is one of India's best colleges for engineering studies. Rancho was admitted as a rich man's son in India, while Farhan and Raju are from an average family. Farhan dreamed of being a wildlife photographer, but his father insisted he study engineering because it was his wish. Indeed, Rancho was the son of a gardener.

He irritates his lecturers by giving creative and unique answers. Joy was also a student of the Imperial College of Engineering. She had requested the dean to extend his major project on the compassionate grounds that his father had suffered a stroke. But, Virus refused, saying he was utterly unmoved by his son's accidental death after being hit by a train. Rancho condemns the learning system of the institution, blaming it for Lobo's death.

Threatened by Rancho's talent and free spirit, ViruS labels him an "idiot," and he attempts to destroy his friendship with Raju and Farhan. In contrast, (Omi Vaidya) Chatur Ramalingam, or "Silencer," is the model student in the eyes of ViruS, who always wants to get high marks through memorizing rather than understanding.

3 Idiots Film Review- Opinions

The 3 Idiots film will help differentiate between the students who like to memorize only without understanding and those who want to understand topics rather than memorize. The audience will get a clear concept of the duties and responsibilities of a successful student. I immensely enjoyed this film for its fantastic story, casting, dialogue, and music.

Strengths of the 3 Idiots Film

Don't run behind the success; achieve excellence first; the success will automatically come looking for you. Be always creative in your answers, work, & things, which helps you become more capable of your own life.

Based on the 348,000 responses in IMBD,  the 3 Idiots film obtained a rating of 8.4/10.

Weaknesses of the 3 Idiots Film

The leading role in this film is Aamir Khan, who did not struggle enough to achieve success. But it is a fact that struggle and handwork are inevitable for success.

3 Idiots Film Evaluation with Evidence

Performances

250 Words Essay on 3 Idiots Movie Review

The Indian film “3 Idiots”, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, is a potent blend of humor, drama, and enlightenment, making it a must-watch for any cinema enthusiast. The film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel “Five Point Someone”, but it transcends the book’s confines to deliver a poignant message about the educational system.

Plot and Characters

The narrative revolves around three engineering students – Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, played by Aamir Khan, Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi respectively. Rancho challenges the traditional education system, advocating for passion over rote learning. His philosophy clashes with the college director, Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), who epitomizes the rigid educational system.

Cinematic Techniques

The film employs a non-linear narrative, interspersing present events with flashbacks, keeping viewers engaged. The cinematography captures the scenic beauty of Ladakh and the hustle of Delhi, adding depth to the narrative.

Themes and Messages

“3 Idiots” explores themes of friendship, love, parental pressure, and the pitfalls of rote learning. It underscores the importance of understanding over memorization, and following one’s passion, encapsulated in Rancho’s mantra, “Pursue excellence, and success will follow.”

In conclusion, “3 Idiots” is a compelling critique of the Indian educational system, wrapped in the garb of a buddy film. It is a masterpiece that entertains, enlightens, and leaves viewers with food for thought about their educational journeys.

500 Words Essay on 3 Idiots Movie Review

The film revolves around the lives of Farhan Qureshi (Madhavan), Raju Rastogi (Joshi), and Ranchoddas ‘Rancho’ Shamaldas Chanchad (Khan). The narrative unfolds through Farhan’s perspective, who, pressured by his parents, is pursuing an engineering degree despite his passion for wildlife photography. Raju, coming from a poverty-stricken family, views education as a way out of his economic hardships. Rancho, the ‘idiot’ who questions conventional wisdom and the education system, encourages his friends to follow their passions.

Themes and Symbolism

3 Idiots is not just a film about friendship and love; it delves deeper into the societal pressure faced by students in India. It criticizes the rote-learning system, which stifles creativity and encourages competition over understanding. Rancho, the heart of the movie, symbolizes rebellion against this system. He believes in understanding concepts rather than memorizing textbooks, a philosophy that is reflected in his famous dialogue, “Don’t chase success; chase excellence, and success will follow.”

Performances and Direction

Impact and conclusion.

3 Idiots is more than a movie; it’s a critique of the Indian education system and a call for change. It encourages students to break free from societal norms and pursue their passions. The film’s impact was such that it sparked debates about the need for education reform in India.

3 Idiots -- Film Review

OAKLAND — “Life is a race: If you’re not fast enough, you’ll get trampled,” booms engineering college dean Viru Sahastrabudhhe (Boman Irani). The stakes are high: in India 2.0, students whose parents have sacrificed everything for their education are expected to reach the top. But three brainy misfits — Farhan (R. Madhavan), Raju (Sharman Joshi) and Rancho (Aamir Khan) — find a common bond when they realize that their futures aren’t exactly inscribed in a mathematics book.

Written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, whose two previous films also tweaked Indian sensibilities with great commercial and critical success, “3 Idiots” has dominated at the boxoffice this holiday season. In India, the Reliance Big Pictures release collected more than 1 billion rupees ($21.3 million) in its first four days of release.

A great part of the film’s appeal is Aamir Khan, who has come to specialize in heroic iconoclasts, such as a rebellious villager in “Lagaan” or a visionary teacher of special-needs kids in “Taare Zameen Par.” As Rancho, a young engineer of dazzling inventiveness, Khan conveys smarts, mischief and, finally, compassion, as he spurs his friends on to greatness before he mysteriously disappears.

The film’s good points, though, are marred by a slow start and a nerve-jangling soundtrack (except for the charming “Aal Izz Well”). Perceptive, subtle acting work by Khan, Madhavan and Joshi also clashes with buffoonish performances by Omi Vaidya, as an odious school rival, and veteran character actor Irani, whose character is cursed with an unnecessary — and unfunny — lisp.

Hirani’s screenplay also jumps back and forth in time over a 10-year period with limited success, leaving the viewer often wondering whether we’re seeing scenes set in the present or the past.

Despite its flaws, “3 Idiots” conveys a powerful message about how valuable your friends can be when they push you toward reaching your own highest potential.

Film Review: 3 Idiots (2009) by Rajkumar Hirani

movie review writing of 3 idiots

by Eunice Tan

It has been over a decade since the release of “ 3 Idiots ” and it still takes me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Set in the highly reputable (and fictional) Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), the film takes us through India's mentally invigorating education system amidst class inequality and immense societal and familial pressure. Our three idiots – Ranchoddas “Rancho” Shyamaldas Chanchad ( Aamir Khan ), Raju Rastogi ( Sharman Joshi ), and Farhan Qureshi (R Madhavan) navigate the all too familiar rat race with their uplifting motto “All is well”. Witty dialogues, comedic scenes and catchy tunes aside, this didactic film convinces us that life is more than just a race. Highly decorated with awards, the film establishes itself as one of the best in Hindi cinema and the region up till today.

Loosely based on Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone , “3 Idiots” depicts an intertwinement of two plotlines set in the past and present. Upon receiving a phone call from their college rival Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya), Farhan and Raju recount their college days while on the search for Rancho after he inexplicably vanishes after graduation. Gleaning into their past, the film shows us three main archetypes of engineering students in India – one who caved in to parental expectations, one who chases a piece of paper, and one who is passionate and eager to learn. While it is easy to match the characters to the different categories, paying attention to each character's lived experience, be it Farhan's dream of being a wildlife photographer or Raju's filial piety and determination to help his family overcome poverty, prevents us from being complicit in the negation of their identity and agency.

Besides bearing the brunt of old-fashioned teaching methods and rote learning, the engineers-to-be find themselves under the authority of their college director Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani), nicknamed “Virus”. Virus is the embodiment of the rigid and orthodox education system, especially when he dignifies cruel competitions (such as those that contribute to suicide statistics). Rancho is Virus' polar opposite who also stands in stark contrast of the cohort and more significantly, Farhan and Raju. Unlike a vast majority who are held captive to society's unyielding stance that an engineering degree can buy them a stable future, Rancho's motivation is far more liberating. He simply wants to learn.

Under Rancho's intellect and humility, the trio embarks on roads less travelled, especially those that cross paths with Virus and his daughter Pia Sahastrabuddhe (Kareena Kapoor) whom Rancho falls in love with. Cherishing the opportunity to learn under the disguise of a rich man's son, Rancho exemplifies the idea that learning can take place anywhere. By actively applying what he has internalized in class, Rancho's grades surpass Virus' expectations and will later supersede Chatur's so-called “success”.

Watching Rancho put his knowledge to the test in critical life and death circumstances makes us question the product of the education system Virus was pining for. The film may have also acted as a mirror for viewers to reflect upon their learning attitudes and methods, interrogating our actual abilities to apply what we have learned from our books. Perhaps, many of us have longed to veer off the conventional tangent that does not always make economic sense and perhaps, it is at this juncture that we come to define success in our own terms. Otherwise, we may inevitably perpetuate a perverted standard of success, one that has forced many to their wits' end.

While Aamir Khan's portrayal of Rancho scores the film massive points, the character's overly simplistic solutions may have at times trivialized the struggles of his counterparts. With his impoverished family and severely ill father relying on his examination grades, Raju is understandably under immense stress – to the point where Rancho's optimism may appear as an inability to empathize rather than an encouragement. Still, we have to give Rancho credit for his relentless care towards Raju and his family, teaching us the importance of a strong support system amidst trying times.

Panning to the mise en scène of the film, the crew nailed the cast's outfits where they each represent the personality, socioeconomic status, and cultural background of their character. Not to mention, the bright colors and energetic choreography of the dance sequences almost mimic Rancho's happy-go-lucky outlook and embolden our spirits to match that of Rancho's.

Although “3 Idiots” is littered with the glitz and glamour of Bollywood characteristics and rib-tickling pranks, the lessons it espouses remain applicable especially in countries where mental disorders in students are on a rise. “3 Idiots” is ultimately a feel-good movie that reeks of hope even in the direst circumstances. While we may not always be able to overcome systems of power, the simple lie of “All is well” may be a placebo effect we never knew we needed to transcend difficult situations. The satisfying end to Rancho and Chatur's feud is definitely one that keeps me going back.

“3 Idiots” an Excellent Introduction to Bollywood Cinema

Welcome to Bollywood Gems, a series where I, an experienced Bollywood film viewer, review Bollywood films for quality and beginner friendliness.

Sanket Makkar , Staff Writer | October 25, 2021

"3 Idiots" an Excellent Introduction to Bollywood Cinema

Today, I will be reviewing 3 Idiots , a comic drama that follows two friends as they chase their arrogant but talented college roommate and recall their days together while learning more about his mysterious and inspiring past.

3 Idiots stands out among its Bollywood peers for its unique plot and emotionally compelling characters, both of which advance its powerful message that life should be about chasing excellence, even when it is not quantifiable.

Director Rajkumar Hirani makes masterful use of his unique stars and intelligent casting to deliver the film’s message while also giving the audience a good laugh.

Though it does have flaws, Hirani’s film tells a story that inspires rewatch after rewatch regardless of whether or not you speak Hindi. Therefore, I strongly recommend this film as an introduction for Bollywood beginners.

Although appreciating the film does not require any pre-requisite knowledge of Indian cinema or culture, it would help to keep a few things in mind. The first is that Bollywood movies tend to feature at least three songs in order to transition between themes or plot points. In the case of 3 Idiots , there are five songs.

The other thing to remember is that, in India, grades are the most important part of student life. Because India has a population of nearly 1.38 billion people, colleges focus almost entirely on grades for admission. In the U.S. grades play a large role in college admissions decisions, but in India they are college admissions decisions. In order to get into a competitive college, students typically have to have grades that outpace hundreds of millions of people.

Aside from these few issues, this movie serves as a fantastic introduction to Indian culture and cinema, even for someone with no cultural context. Its humor, message and plot are universally appealing. For these reasons I would give 3 Idiots 4.5 stars in beginner friendliness.

3 Idiots focuses on the stories of Raju Rastogi, Farhan Quareshi, Chatur Ramalingam and most importantly Ranchoddas S. Chanchad, or Rancho for short. As the movie begins, the audience is introduced to Farhan, Raju and Chatur who, ten years later, have begun their journey across India to find their college friend and Chatur’s rival, Rancho.

All four characters attended ICE (the Imperial College of Engineering), a fictional top college in India notorious for its intense competition. It is there that the real story is told.

The movie spends most of its time cutting between Farhan and Raju’s recollections of Rancho in college and their journey to find him after a decade. Through these flashbacks, the movie reveals Rancho’s college antics, profound friendship with Farhan and Raju, personal philosophy and rivalry with Chatur.

In the late 2000’s, Bollywood college movies focused mostly on college love stories. Although 3 Idiots does have some romance, it focuses more on the deeper lessons learned by its flawed characters. While the film is predictable at times, its unique focus stands out even today.

A large part of this movie’s success is owed to its incredible cast. Aamir Khan, who plays Rancho, makes an overconfident smart guy endearing. R. Madhavan, who plays Farhan, shows the struggles of a dispassionate engineering student coping with life’s pressures. Sharman Joshi, who plays Raju, dives into his role as a student held back by his own caution. Omi Vaidya, who plays Chatur, becomes a competitive and dislikable antagonist.

Finally, Boman Irani, who plays the College Dean Viru Sahastrabuddhe, exemplifies the comic absurdity of a strict college dean. I could go on about the intelligent casting of even insignificant roles, or about how each actor played a vital part in bringing this movie together, but I would be writing all day.

Casting is one of the strongest aspects in this movie, and I recommend watching this movie to see how it all comes together. Even though you are watching a comedy, it really does feel like a peek into a tense, high-performing college environment.

The biggest drawback of the movie is that Rancho suffers from, what I call, Perfect Character Syndrome. He is usually the smartest person in the room; he hardly ever loses, and even when he does struggle it doesn’t seem like he, personally, is going to suffer.

The reason for this is his unnatural confidence and competence. In almost every instance where a problem between him and some authority arises, he finds a way out of it.

To get around this, Hirani makes use of Rancho’s friends, Farhan and Raju. The plot’s tension doesn’t come from Rancho’s potential failure, but rather the possibility that his friends might get in trouble too. If Rancho gets in trouble with authorities, the audience knows that his friends will suffer too. Thus the tension of the film isn’t sacrificed to Rancho’s perfection.

Ultimately, 3 Idiots is a fantastic movie and a great way to get started in Bollywood Cinema. I strongly recommend that both newcomers and Bollywood veterans watch it.

Overall, I would give 4.5 stars in beginner friendliness and 4 stars in movie quality.

3 idiots review 4.5/5 & rating. watch 3 idiots official trailer video, listen songs, movie news updates, movie review and checkout public movie reviews soon., 3 idiots review {4.5/5} & review rating.

Life is all about listening to your heart and chasing your dreams. That's the essence of 3 IDIOTS, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. Let me come to the point right away. There are films and there are more films. And then there's 3 IDIOTS.

Come to think of it, 3 IDIOTS carries a huge 'burden' on its shoulders: The 'burden' of humungous expectations. And it's not without reasons...

  • 3 IDIOTS is Aamir's next release after the record-breaker GHAJINI.
  • 3 IDIOTS is Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's third film together, after MUNNABHAI MBBS and LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, landmark films.
  • Three actors from the path-breaking RANG DE BASANTI team - Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman - team up yet again. Plus, Aamir's teaming up with Hirani. It couldn't get bigger!

3 IDIOTS is over-hyped and that could be dangerous for any film since it's the expectations which kill a film if the content doesn't match up to the hype. In this case, all izz well!

Now let's demystify the myths... 3 IDIOTS is not about idiots or nincompoops. It's about three engineering students who believe in ' I 'll D o I t O n my T erms' and that's what the three characters achieve in life and that's what Hirani, Chopra, Aamir eventually achieve at the end of the movie. Making a movie on their terms!

One more thing! You cannot draw parallels with any other film, past or present, successful or unsuccessful. And though people may draw parallels with GHAJINI or the MUNNABHAI series, it would be sacrilege to do so. 3 IDIOTS [based on a novel 'Five Point Someone' by Chetan Bhagat] doesn't tilt, it stands tall.

Here's yet another illusion: 3 IDIOTS belongs to Aamir Khan. Yes, it does, but also to R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor and Omi, the entrant in Hindi movies, who delivers an equally sterling performance. The film would be incomplete without any of these characters.

To cut a long story short, all you'd like to say about the film is, All izz very, very, very, very, very well. Watch this film to know what it means!

Two friends [R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi] embark on a quest for a lost buddy. As they make their way through the perilous landscape [Shimla, Manali, Ladakh], another journey begins: their inner journey through memory lane and the story of their friend - the irrepressible free-thinker Rancho [Aamir Khan], who, in his unique way, touched and changed their lives.

It's a story of their hostel days that swings between Rancho's romance with the spirited Pia [Kareena Kapoor] and his clash with and oppressive mentor, Viru Sahastrabudhhe [Boman Irani]. And then one day, suddenly, Rancho vanishes...

Who was he? Where did he come from? Why did he leave? The friend who influenced and inspired them to think creatively and independently, even as the conformist world called them three idiots. Where is the original idiot now?

Hirani is a genius and that has been proved twice in the past. He proves it for the third time with 3 IDIOTS. Screenplay writers Hirani and Abhijat Joshi and screenplay associate Vidhu Vinod Chopra narrate a story that's straight out of life. A story that each one of us can relate to or identify with.

Very often, we've read news-reports of students committing suicides because they've to live up to the family's pressure/expectations. This film depicts it at the very start, when a student commits suicide. But the issue doesn't end there, for 3 IDIOTS raises a pertinent question: Was it suicide or murder?

Hirani balances the rough and smooth incidents in their lives beautifully. The sequences in the campus, right from the ragging sequence at the start, to Omi's speech when the word 'chamatkaar' is changed to 'balatkaar' [superb; will bring the house down], to the trio getting caught in an embarrassing situation at the reception of Kareena's sister [Mona Singh], to the dinner sequence at Sharman's house, to Kareena and Aamir driving Sharman's seriously ill father on their bike to the hospital... the funny moments would make your jaws ache.

The interval point is a shocker. The point at which the first half ends will leave you stunned. Now what was that? Kahani mein twist!

The mystery is solved soon after the intermission ends and a new journey begins. That's one of the USPs of the film. Just when you think that the story would be solved, a new story begins. Of course, the pace dips slightly in its second hour, especially during the delivery sequence of Mona [which may appear filmy to a few], but the immediate sequence, when the baby boy is born and also the subsequent sequence between Boman and Aamir bring the film back on track. The culmination to the film is novel and yes, it's a master stroke from the writing point of view!

Every person behind the camera gives his/her best to the film. Hirani and Joshi's screenplay is the mainstay of the film. If you fondly recall 'Gandhigiri' from their previous film LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, you'd have a new phrase to chew on this time: 'All Izz Well'. Muraleedharan C.K.'s cinematography is awesome. Note the aerial view at the very start, when Madhavan and Sharman begin the journey to Shimla or the picture perfect look of Ladakh... the DoP does a magnificent job.

Shantanu Moitra's music may sound plain ordinary to ears, but when viewed on screen, the score is just perfect. 'Give Me Some Sunshine', 'All Is Well', 'Zoobie Doobie' are three tracks that would grow on you after you've watched the film. The choreography of 'All Izz Well' [Avit Dias] and 'Zoobie Doobie' [Bosco-Caesar] are eye-catching. The background score [Sanjay Wandrekar, Atul Raninga, Shantanu Moitra] is right.

3 IDIOTS belongs to everyone. But, yes, there's no denying that Aamir makes you forget all his past achievements as you watch the amazing actor play Rancho. To state that this ranks amongst his finest works would be an understatement. Madhavan is incredible, especially in the sequence when he explains his point of view to his father [Pareekshit Sahani]. Sharman is outstanding from start to end. This was a difficult role to portray and only an actor of calibre could've pulled it off. Boman is superb as the vicious head of the institute. The scenes between Aamir and Boman are extra-ordinary and it's a treat to watch these two powerful actors clash on the big screen, without getting overdramatic. Boman's appearance, mannerisms and dialogue delivery are exemplary.

The length of Kareena's role may not be as much as Aamir, Madhavan and Sharman, but she registers a strong impact nonetheless. Omi is excellent and the viewers are sure to love his acidic tongue and gestures in the movie. Mona Singh doesn't get much scope. Jaaved Jaffery is competent. Pareekshit Sahani is decent.

On the whole, 3 IDIOTS easily ranks amongst Aamir, Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra's finest films. Do yourself and your family a favour: Watch 3 IDIOTS. It's emotional, it's entertaining, it's enlightening. The film has tremendous youth appeal and feel-good factor to work in a big way.

A comedy about three college buddies that doesn’t let its more serious theme of “self-actualization” get in the way of the entertainment, “ 3 Idiots ” takes a while to lay out its game plan but pays off emotionally in its second half. Quality mainstream item from producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and helmer Rajkumar Hirani, best known for their 2003 hit “Munna Bhai MBBS,” comes laden with must-see smarts, especially super-choosy star Aamir Khan (“ Lagaan “). Crossover potential is zero, but the Dec. 23 release should score some intelligent numbers among Indian auds at home and abroad over the year-end frame.

Olympics screenings in movie theaters highlight exhibitors’ need for alternative content, 'house of the dragon' finale hits season 2 viewership high with nearly 9 million viewers, but down from season 1 ender.

Script is loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s 2004 bestseller, “Five Point Someone,” first published in English and later translated into Hindi. But where Bhagat’s novel focused entirely on the college-exam anxieties and romantic antics of three student friends, “3 Idiots” expands the material into a tale of almost epic proportions, as two pals set out on a journey to find the third who influenced their lives so much at university 10 years earlier.

Popular on Variety

Warm-up has Farhan Qureshi (R. Madhavan) getting a call from oily businessman Chatur Ramalingam (Omi Vaidya) that he knows where to find their former fellow student, Rancho (Khan), who mysteriously disappeared after graduation. Farhan rounds up his old friend Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and, with no choice but to take Chatur along, the pair set off on the long drive north from New Delhi to the hill town of Shimla.

En route, Farhan’s mind goes back to their days at engineering college, where he and Raju felt pressured by family and society to succeed: Raju came from a poor background and Farhan (who really wanted to be a photographer) from a conservative, middle-class one. Their liberating friendship with roommate Rancho — aka Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad — gave them a whole new perspective on life.

From his delayed entrance on, pint-sized Khan dominates the movie as Rancho, a pixie-like, free-thinking Gujarati who isn’t fazed by normal pressures (encapsulated by his catchphrase, “Aal izz well”) and has a talent for creative problem-solving. This leads to a running battle with pompous, know-it-all principal Viru Sahastrabuddhe (vet Boman Irani), nicknamed Prof. Virus, but attracts the romantic attention of the prof’s daughter, Pia (Kareena Kapoor).

In the first of several jumbo-sized flashbacks, the pic careens along with likable student japes until it springs a twist before intermission that throws new light on Rancho’s character. As the friends continue their odyssey in part two, more flashbacks show Farhan and Raju being influenced by Rancho’s philosophy on life, for good and for ill.

Most of the character development is packed into this second half, which packs several unexpected dramatic reversals despite the generally light tone. Khan’s ability to play almost childlike characters, which he exploited in his 2007 directorial debut, “Taare zameen par,” is well deployed, especially in the latter stages as Rancho realizes the downsides of his influence. Final reels, which return to the present time amid the spectacular mountain scenery of Ladakh, have a moving, big-hearted inclusiveness.

Aside from one number centered on Raju in hospital, the catchy musical segments are largely decorative. The best-staged performance is the nonsense number “Zoobi doobi,” which parodies Bollywood cliches. Technically, the pic is smooth in all departments.

movie review writing of 3 idiots

This movie had a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes so I just had to see what all the fuss was about. Honestly, the title of the movie already caught my eye because I was intrigued to know who are the 3 Idiots.

If you’re into Bollywood types of movies with lots of comedic scenes, then this film is definitely for you. Now despite the humour, ‘ 3 Idiots ‘ does shed light on some serious topics like death and suicide. I thought it was a good medium to highlight the stress parents may put onto their child to bring home good grades.

Like most films of the genre, it has its share of the usual singing and dancing. Plus, the love story was very sweet. Though, the one thing I did not enjoy was some of the humour. I don’t think I would rate this movie as 100%, but I was impressed with the way the director was able to add wit and humour for a movie on a serious topic.

3 Idiots – All Izz Well

movie review writing of 3 idiots

3 Idiots is not just a story of 3 engineering students; it is story of every being that takes birth on this planet. The movie also presents the struggles of life that people have to face in their lives.

3 Idiots movie still 1

3 Idiots sets new standards of friendship and mutual bonding between classmates

3 Idiots is adapted from a Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Five Point Someone . It is directed and produced by Raj Kumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, respectively. The screenplay is by Abhijat Joshi.

Prof. Pankaj Chandra (Director of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore) along with the management, faculty and students has contributed a lot in the making of 3 Idiots . They shared their real life experiences and expressions that enabled the makers to display the aspirations, issues and concerns of engineering students with accuracy and impact.

In this movie Aamir Khan played the central character Phunshukh Wangdu who takes on the identity of Ranchoddas Syamaldas Chanchad, the son of rich, influential businessman to further his studies.  He does all the hard work and gets the grades and gathers knowledge but the certificates and awards he gets are all picked up by the real Ranchoddas Syamaldas Chanchad, who was never good in studies.

3 Idiots is a story of human struggle from cradle to grave. The movie portrays how the human struggle for existence begins with the birth of a child. The child opens his eyes in the world to see the expectations floating in the eyes of his parents who want their children to become Engineer, Doctor, IAS, or some other officer, and glorify their family name.

Parents are completely ignorant if their expectations are actually benefiting their children or adding to their mental pressure.

3 Idiots movie still 2

The pressures of parental expectations and being pushed into doing something you didn’t want to do.

It is not that parents are enemies of their children or they have their personal interests in doing so. But even parents are humans who tend to make mistakes and take wrong decisions.

The movie shows a father accepting his mistake later on for forcing his son, who was passionate about wildlife photography, to do engineering. He eventually allows him to follow his heart.

3 Idiots movie still 4

Boman Irani as the inimitable director of the institute

In another scene, the director of the institute (who had already announced the career for his grandson/granddaughter while he/she was in his daughter’s womb) seemed convinced that a child should choose his or her career as per the interest. The cinema hall bursts into applause when he says holding his newly-born grandson, “ jo banna hai ban (become whatever you want to become)”.

3 Idiots sets new standards of friendship and mutual bonding between classmates which was evident in the first frame of the film.

The film begins with Farhan (R Madhavan) receiving a call from one of his old classmate Chatur (Omi Vidya), who asks him to meet at an old spot in the university campus as he claims to know the whereabouts of their long-parted friend Rancho (Aamir Khan), a close friend of Farhan and Raju (Sharman Joshi).

Farhan was in the flight at that time and the flight had already taken off. He was so desperate to meet Rancho that he pretended to have suffered a heart attack and forced the pilot to make an emergency landing. This scene shows how deep was the bond of friendship between these three friends.

He then committed another crime by boarding a taxi waiting for somebody else at the airport. From the taxi, he called Raju and informed him about Chatur (nicknamed ‘Silencer’) having the information of Rancho. On hearing this, Raju got so excited that he forgot to wear the trouser and joined Farhan in the taxi.

3 Idiots movie still 3

‘Kamyabi ke piche mat bhag, kabil ban, kamyabi jhak marke tere piche aayega’

Farhan and Raju instructed the driver to drop them at ICE (Imperial College of Engineering), their college where they had completed their engineering and had become friends for life.

After leaving the taxi, they hurried towards the terrace where Chatur was waiting for them. While Raju and Farhan were eager to know about Rancho, who had gone missing after completing college, Silencer reminded them of Sept 5, a date when he had challenged them to meet on same day after 10 years and decide who had done better in life.

Ranchoddas Symaldas Chanchad or Rancho’s dialogue, ‘ Kamyabi ke piche mat bhag, kabil ban, kamyabi jhak marke tere piche aayega’ (Don’t run after success, be capable and success will come running after you) is my favorite in the movie and is practical and effective.

Read Citylights Review – a film that gives a strong message to commoners who abandon village struggle in the hope to conquer city dreams

3 Idiots is not just the story of 3 engineering students; it is a story of every being that takes birth on this planet. The movie presents the struggles of life that people have to face in their lives. There is a scene where Farhan says that the moment he’d taken birth his father had announced that my son will become an engineer – Engineer Farhan Qureshi, B. Tech.

The movie effectively highlights the problem of parents pushing their children to choose what they don’t like and make them forget or ignore their hobbies that could have become a great profession for them.

3 Idiots movie still 5

Raju, Rancho and Farhan on a joy ride

This happens with Farhan who wanted to be a wildlife photographer. He could never do well in engineering but once he took up his hobby as profession he never looked back and established new milestones of success.

On the other hand, Raju represents the class of children who under the burden of expectations of their parents start to fear failure. This ultimately kills their confidence and leads to their failure. This fear of failure sometimes forces them to take extreme steps as it happens with Raju who tries to commit suicide. But once he gains back his confidence he starts to taste success in whatever he endeavors.

Also, there are some cute romantic scenes between the lead pair, Aamir and Kareena. The movie conveys a very interesting message but in a humorous and interesting way. The scene where Chatur delivers a speech in Hindi, which he crams but doesn’t understand, is absolutely hilarious, especially when he pronounces ‘ chamatkar ’ as ‘ balatkaar ’, courtesy Rancho who changes some words in the speech.

3 Idiots movie still 6

The film depicts that life at engineering colleges is not fun; they have to deal with some serious problems including struggle to get good grades, ragging and mental pressure that forces a student to commit suicide.

Rancho’s dialogues are motivating. “There is lot of knowledge flowing around us. Don’t miss it; grab it from wherever you get it,” he says. Every dialogue in this movie is a motivational quote that may guide you in all walks of life.

Read Mary Kom Review – about a person who despite facing all odds becomes the world’s número uno through passion, ‘zidd’ and ‘paagalpan’.

There are a lot of thrilling scenes in the movie including a scene where Rancho with knowledge and engineering skills helps Mona (the director’s elder daughter) deliver a baby, which could otherwise have been life-threatening for both child and mother, as the roads to hospitals were jammed due to heavy rainfall.

The movie comes with an unexpected and unpredictable but delightfully pleasant climax that proves Rancho’s point – “ Kamyabi ke pichhe mat bhaag, kabil ban, kamyabi jhak marke tere piche aayegi” (Don’t run after success, be capable and success will come running after you).

Everything is perfect, right from individual performances, screenplay, direction, editing to cinematography. Music is situational and melodious especially songs such as ‘give me some sunshine give me some rain’ and ‘o bhaiyya all izz well.’

3 Idiots is a must watch for everyone!

Excellent job done sushil…keep it up… One thing i would like to mention here as u said “All is well”…this really gives us inner power to fight with the bad situation we are going through. Dil ko buddhu bana ke rakho…… Nice concept ……

Re: Dil ko buddhu bana ke rakho……

It’s more than dil ko buddhu banana :). As scientists would tell us we only use 10% of our brain consciously.

In other words we are NOT using 90% of our mind consciously, i.e. our sub-conscience/intuition/sixth sense or whatever you want to call it is far more powerful than our conscious thoughts. Unfortunately, most of the time we tend to ignore our sub-conscious thoughts…

As Benjamin Spock the famous American pediatrician and author of ‘ Baby and Child Care ‘, one of the biggest best-sellers of all time said, “Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”

By telling “all is well” we are telling our sub-conscious mind everything is fine. And as you have said yourself, “this really gives us inner power to fight with the bad situation we are going through.”

Reason: The much more powerful sub-conscious mind tells our conscious mind “all is well.” This creates a feeling of security which gives energy to face the situation at hand, keep fighting and finally winning!

After all – jo jeeta woh sikander!!

Violence & Scariness

A character pretends to be unwell and causes an airplane to land in emergency. There is an elaborate sequence where people are humiliated and made to strip down to their underwear. Multiple characters are given electric shocks. There is a long childbirth scene where a character in labor continually screams in pain. Someone jumps off a building attempting suicide; there is severe blood, injury, and prolonged hospitalization with surgery scenes. Another character commits suicide by hanging themselves. There are intense arguments and conversation about someone committing suicide by jumping off a train. In multiple scenes, characters smash alcohol bottles on the ground aggressively. Threats of physical violence are made; characters are slapped, kicked, beaten with umbrellas, and their heads are banged. Someone is tied up in a car. There are jokes made about missiles and mass destruction. An individual holds various people at gunpoint. A character with paralysis is rushed to the hospital. Rape "jokes" are present as are jokes about nuclear destruction.

"Idiots," "jackass," "get out," "shut up," "donkey," "hell," "get lost," "rascals," "stupid," "swine," "ass," "piss," "mad," "damn." "God" is used as an exclamation. The film has a lot of recurring jokes about sexual violence.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Characters get drunk on multiple occasions, some leading to fights and arguments. In one elaborate sequence, characters trespass on, and vandalize, private property after drinking.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

There is romance, flirting, and some kissing. Adult magazines are briefly shown but no nudity seen. A character talks about posters that have naked women on them. Sexual innuendo and double-meaning jokes. A character elopes.

Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Sex, Romance & Nudity in your kid's entertainment guide.

Positive Role Models

Rancho is carefree, unbothered, and honest. He doesn't care for social obligations, petty rules, and accolades. He helps his friends, Farhan and Raju, tremendously throughout the film and enables them to find their own identity. Raju overcomes his fear-ridden way of living and starts believing in himself. Farhan chooses his passion over an unhappy life as an engineer.

Positive Messages

Life is not a race. Unhealthy competition in the education sphere has dangerous impacts on students. Good friendships must be valued. One must follow their passions and find their own identity to be truly happy. Iffy humor.

Diverse Representations

The film centers around three male friends. All characters are Indian; the film pans across Shimla and Ladakh. A character has paralysis and their role is limited to their condition. Themes around suicide and what can lead people to having such thoughts. There are multiple conversations and jokes made about dowry. Men are shown laughing during a speech that makes countless references to rape.

Parents need to know that 3 Idiots is a Bollywood comedy-drama that has a number of positive messages about friendship, but also features themes around suicide and problematic humor. It follows three friends, Rancho ( Aamir Khan ), Farhan ( R. Madhavan ), and Raju (Sharman Joshi), during their college years and beyond. There are intense arguments and some violence including slapping, head smashing, kicking, and someone being repeatedly hit with an umbrella. Bottles are smashed on the ground, threats of beatings and gun violence are made, and someone is tied up in a moving car. Themes of suicide run throughout. A character jumps off a building and is severely injured; blood and gore. In another, someone hangs themselves. People talk elaborately about a person who killed themselves by jumping off a train. In one scene, seniors rag and bully their juniors in college by making them do humiliating things while only dressed in their underwear. There is a prolonged labour sequence where a character cries in pain and distress. Characters drink throughout, getting drunk on multiple occasions, which leads to acts of trespassing and vandalism. Language is fairly mild, with "ass" and "piss" about as extreme as it gets. However, there are a number of rape "jokes" made throughout. The film is in Hindi with English subtitles. What's the Story?

3 IDIOTS follows college best friends, Farhan ( R. Madhavan ) and Raju (Sharman Joshi), who drive down to Shimla in search for Rancho ( Aamir Khan ), their long-lost buddy. During their journey, they recall the times they shared together, the mischief they got up to, and all that they learned from Rancho.

Is It Any Good?

This comic drama directed by Rajkumar Hirani is a fun-filled entertainer that simultaneously dissects the educational system for its darkest flaws. 3 Idiots dives deep into the world of engineering and college life, tackling various aspects of how alienating student life can be. Refreshing in his ability to break rules at every nook and corner, Khan's Rancho is a mischievous yet lovable lead who shines throughout. The way the film handles themes around suicide is also as pertinent as it is poignant given the devastating reality behind such events. However, where 3 Idiots fails is in its blatant obsession over seriously problematic rape jokes that continually punctuate the film. The exploitative and unnecessary use of such derogatory humor is extremely disappointing in an otherwise well-constructed film.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how 3 Idiots dealt with suicide. How did mental and emotional stress caused by education and society impact the character's well-being? What can be done to help with stress?

How did the film represent drinking ? Did you think any of the characters drank too much? What are some of the real-life consequences of drinking?

What made Rancho, Farhan, and Raju's friendship so honest and genuine? How were they different from a character like Chatur?

Which characters displayed traits of courage , empathy , and teamwork in the film? Why are they such important character strengths to have?

Did you find any of the humor problematic? If so, what was it and why?

A painting of Joe Biden with part of his face obscured by a blank spot.

Joe Biden’s Interrupted Presidency

He sought the office nearly all his life. When he finally got there, it brought out his best — and eventually his worst.

  • Aug. 18, 2024

Shortly after the 11 minutes were over and President Joseph R. Biden Jr. arose from behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office on the evening of July 24, he and his family filed out to the Rose Garden.

Listen to this article, read by Robert Petkoff

A throng of White House staff members were waiting outside, under a slight drizzle, with a faint rainbow emerging overhead. Most of them spent the preceding hour nervously eating pizza in the East Room of the White House before growing hushed to listen to their 81-year-old boss speak to the nation. Several of them had been crying earlier in the day. But midway into his speech, Biden began to enumerate his administration’s considerable legislative achievements — among them, “And we finally beat Big Pharma,” a line he had fatefully mangled in the debate with Donald J. Trump less than a month earlier, abruptly dropping the hammer on his political future. As he proceeded through these shared highlights, the tenor in the East Room seemed to change, and a few of the staff members proudly shook hands and hugged one another.

Now Biden spoke only to them, through a microphone someone handed him (according to a video of the event that I obtained). “My name is Joe Biden, and I’m Jill Biden’s husband,” he began, grinning broadly at his familiar joke, as his wife stood beside him, noticeably more subdued, working through her own emotions. “Look,” he told his aides, “the only reason that we’ve had the progress that we’ve had is because of you. And that’s not hyperbole.” He added, in a raspy but otherwise even voice: “I’m so damned proud to be a part of you. I really mean that.”

Sounding anything but deflated, Biden exhorted his staff members to think about the work there was left to do over their final six months. He wanted to extend prescription-drug benefits. He wanted to force billionaires to pay their fair share in taxes. “We can start to help lay the groundwork for Kamala,” Biden said of his vice president and now heir apparent, who was already out on the campaign trail.

He wrapped up his three minutes of remarks with a stage-whispered call to arms, as if it were a secret plan: “ Let’s elect Kamala!” After their ovation, the president urged his staff to get to work on the ice cream stationed behind them. Biden cracked a few other jokes but didn’t stay for dessert. Instead, the 46th president of the United States retreated with his wife down the walkway to the residence.
