Simple Ordering Process

A system that works for everyone, important notes:.

As a student of education looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing education theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The field of education is vast and interrelated with so many other academic disciplines. That is why creating an education dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic; it is the basis of your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in  writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the very initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

While developing a research topic, keeping our advice in mind will allow you to pick one of the best education dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and add to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Take a look at some of our sample education dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

  • Discussion and  Conclusion: The researcher presents his interpretation of the results in this chapter and states whether the research hypothesis has been verified or not. An essential aspect of this section is to establish the link between the results and evidence from the literature. Recommendations with regards to implications of the findings and directions for the future may also be provided. Finally, a summary of the overall research, along with final judgments, opinions, and comments, must be included in the form of suggestions for improvement.

5 Tips for Choosing Your EdD Dissertation Topic

Faculty Insights Industry Advice Education

Associate teaching professor Corliss Thompson shares her top tips for choosing your EdD dissertation topic.

You’ve learned more about why you should earn your Doctor of Education (EdD), and now you’re ready to apply. As part of the Northeastern application process, however, you’re required to submit a problem of practice that you want to pursue throughout the course of your doctoral program.

But how do you arrive at that problem of practice and narrow your area of interest down into a specific dissertation topic? Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Learn how an EdD can give you the skills to enact organizational change in any industry.

Tips for Choosing a Dissertation Topic

1. pick a topic you’re passionate about..

A lot of work goes into your dissertation—from the literature review, where you’re conducting a critical analysis of what’s been published on your topic, to interviewing stakeholders and actually writing the dissertation itself. Each of those steps take time, so you want to choose a topic that will keep you engaged and hold your interest.

When trying to decide your area of focus, consider the challenges you’re motivated to address and the difference you want to make both during and at the end of your EdD program. The goal is that you will continuously build off your dissertation research and leverage the work in a way that positively impacts your organization and/or community.

2. Ensure your topic is manageable.

You want to select a topic you can complete during the duration of your EdD program that is also aligned with your budget. If you need to travel or perform longitudinal research, your idea might not be achievable. Find what available, attainable data you can, and use that to narrow down your research into a dissertation that’s more manageable.

3. Embrace the unknown.

Although you’re passionate about your topic and it’s manageable, there will still be lingering questions about your subject. Be prepared to explore what you don’t know and deepen what you already do know. Strong research typically results in more questions.

Be ready to ask questions of yourself, others, and the literature, and get comfortable with not knowing the answer. As you’re thinking about your dissertation, keep track of inquiries that emerge around different ideas. Those may help you hone in on a topic.

4. Leverage your peers.

One benefit of enrolling in an EdD program is the diversity of backgrounds and opinions you’ll find within your cohort. At Northeastern, EdD instruction is primarily online, which enables students to connect and collaborate with professionals from around the world.

Vasiliki Goudanas Mavroudhis, a recent graduate of Northeastern’s EdD program, emphasized this benefit in her piece on what it’s like to be in an online doctoral program , saying:

The ability to not only have a cohort-based network, but one that crossed cohorts and continents, allowed me to have a far richer and deeper experience. I learned from students with different perspectives who came from different industries across a number of countries.

When fleshing out your dissertation, use that global network to your advantage. Ask your peers for constructive feedback. It’s likely they’ll have suggestions on how you can approach your topic from different cultural perspectives.

5. Know it’s OK to change your topic.

It’s natural for your dissertation topic to evolve the more research you complete and experts you interview. Actually, it’s expected.

Switching topics halfway through the program might seem like more work, but you will have already gone through the research process once and laid the foundation for your dissertation. As you approach your topic from different perspectives, it’s understandable if your own viewpoint changes a bit.

If you’re in need of inspiration, here are some examples of doctoral research Northeastern students have recently conducted:

  • “The Drop Out Decisions of Latino College Students”
  • “Changing the Experiences of African Refugee Youth”
  • “Supporting Students Through Mindful Mentoring”
  • “The Transitioning Student Veteran: Finding Your Civilian Career Through Academic Success”
  • “Bridging the Gap Between Training and Educating in Adult Learning”
  • “Watch out for Shards from the Glass Ceiling: A Study of Women Higher Educational Administrators’ Leadership Development Experiences”

If you are confused about choosing a topic for your dissertation, here are some simple methods that might simplify what you can put your focus on while writing your dissertation.

Choose a Relevant Topic

It is extremely important to select a relevant topic for the dissertation as it contributes to your future. To obtain a masters degree in education, you need to find interesting topics for a dissertation. The topic must hold your interest and include the potential to provide you with a significant amount of content.

Don’t Be Vague

A dissertation is supposed to be a lengthy piece of research work. So the dissertation must be broad enough to explore the topic. It must follow a clear structure to contribute to the argumentation you are going to include in the dissertation.

Research Questions

Do not select narrow questions which are supposed to be answered with a Yes or No. Choose questions that provide you with relevant answers such as

  • Can parent’s expectations affect a student’s life?
  • Does giving students homework really contribute to their academic improvement?

Ask for advice

Students who are writing a dissertation are always provided with guidance. Teachers or supervisors are assigned to guide students throughout the duration of the dissertation. So remember to ask for feedback or a piece of advice. Your supervisor will have years of academic experience, so their recommendation will only add to your research.

Before choosing a topic, make sure you research thoroughly about the chosen topic. Be aware of the content provided by the topic. You may not get enough information to complete the dissertation, so make sure you find and get enough sources to expand and support your arguments.

Coronavirus’s Effects on Education

The goal of this study is to look at the effects of Coronavirus.

Online educational programs to educate students during COVID-19

Many students’ education has been disrupted as a result of the global Coronavirus epidemic and the lockdown, which has affected students at all levels of education, including school, college, and university. This research will look at the many platforms, schools, institutions, and universities that provide online programs. It will go through how students may get access to these courses and how they can profit from them.

Impact of COVID-19 on educational institutes

This research will look at the effects of COVID-19 on educational institutions. What efforts can be made to guarantee that kids and teachers are in a safe environment?

Role of teachers and professors during the Coronavirus Pandemic.

The future of education in the aftermath of the Coronavirus epidemic.

This study will collect information on current educational practices in the event of a pandemic and estimate the future of education in the wake of the Coronavirus.

What is the impact of the Coronavirus epidemic on education?

Coronavirus has served as a sharp reminder of how human schools are. Students have embraced online learning but are eager to return to her classroom. I don’t think it’s possible to tell whether a student is truly interested and understands the material while they’re learning it online. The goal of this study is to determine how the coronavirus epidemic is affecting schooling.

What steps are institutions taking in reaction to Coronavirus?

Universities are increasingly deciding to utilise social distancing methods, such as switching to more online delivery of courses and allowing employees to work from home. There is currently no government advice to institutions on this subject. As a result, each operational choice made by different institutions must be based on their own local conditions, which differ for a variety of reasons. This study will look at some of the responses to the epidemic that we’ve seen across colleges.

Coronavirus’s influence on overseas students and colleges’ responses

This study will look into the effects of Coronavirus on overseas students and how colleges are responding.

The formal education provided to college, undergraduate, and postgraduate students is referred to as higher education or college/university education. The following are some intriguing higher education dissertation topics.

  • The origins of traditional university education’s cultural roots
  • Students from non-core subjects might use interactive strategies to create enthusiasm for learning foreign languages.
  • In the university’s digital educational environment, conceptual underpinnings for building a customised educational path for students.
  • Formation of the student’s civic role in the university’s instructional activities
  • Students’ self-education motivation is developed through the university’s scientific library.
  • Students at legal faculties might improve their self-education motivation by participating in social events.
  • Using time management approaches, pupils can develop self-education motivation.

An M.Ed dissertation must include over  60,000 words and should not exceed the limit of 80,000 words.

You must have scored a minimum Percentage of 50% to 60% in B.Ed and the admission varies for different universities. You may be required to take an entrance exam.

It takes around 2 Years to complete an M.Ed Degree.

Best Master's in Education

Reviews and rankings of the best master's in education programs, 5 topics for a master’s in education thesis.

Choosing to pursue a Master’s degree in education is a noble and rewarding undertaking. Your experience as an educator has cultivated your keen awareness to and understanding of issues impacting today’s students. To truly demonstrate your knowledge on these crucial issues, selecting a stellar thesis topic is of utmost importance.

Resource:  Top 10 Best Online Master’s in Education Degree Programs (M.Ed.) 2016

Listed below are 5 topics that may inspire you when selecting a theme for your Master’s dissertation research:

1: Autism awareness in the classroom

Accommodating students with special needs and developing a learner-friendly classroom environment is undoubtedly one of the key elements of teaching. However, despite research conducted by the  CDC  suggesting that approximately 1 out of 68 children is on the autism spectrum, little progress has been made to ensure that public schools and accompanying curriculum adequately accommodate different needs. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding autism stems from a lack of understanding about the condition. Perhaps research into how to appropriately inform educators and students alike about autism would make for a more equitable, hospital learning environment. This would make a worthwhile Master’s thesis topic to undertake.

2: Nutrition and its effects on education

It is widely known that ‘you are what you eat.’ Unfortunately, many students in the United States do not have the opportunity to enjoy nutritious meals on a daily basis. It would be pertinent to gain a better understanding of nutrition’s role in students’ academic performance and overall wellbeing. Furthermore, examining meal programs provided in schools could showcase if students truly have access to foods which meet dietary and nutritional needs.

3: Utilizing technology in the classroom

Technological advances are becoming ever prevalent in our modern lives. Rather than ignore this reality, it would be beneficial for educators to embrace technology into the learning environment. For a Master’s thesis, one could examine various technological teaching tools and evaluate efficacy in the teaching environment. As children become exposed to technology at younger ages, learning to adapt to the changes in attention span and learning styles are highly critical to maintaining an engaging classroom.

4: After-school programs

Due to financial strains and governmental cutbacks in public school budgets, the future of after-school programs is becoming increasingly uncertain. The significance of providing a safe after-school environment as well as fostering a student’s interest or hobby cannot be overlooked. As an educator, you can demonstrate your understanding of after-school programs and the role they play in developing healthier, happier students (research further supported by the  U.S. Federal Government ).

5: Incorporating meditation in the classroom

New age mindfulness practices are becoming all the rage these days. Many proponents attest to the magnificent calming and therapeutic benefits of a few minutes of silent meditation each day. Mindfulness training programs for teachers, such as  Mindful Schools , boast that including meditation practices in the daily curriculum will ‘build attention, self-regulation, and empathy’. A research study would be highly valuable if it could accurately support or refute these claims.

These are just a few ideas to guide you on your path to obtaining your prestigious Master’s degree in Education. By selecting a thesis topic that is ideal for you, you will fully demonstrate your knowledge and proficiency as a skilled educator.

Master's Thesis Guide

A master’s thesis must show that the student truly applies a scientific approach to research and understands the main questions and doctrine related to the chosen topic.

The thesis must also put forth an original contribution, which, as an article, could be published without major corrections. The final text should range in length between 20,000 and 25,000 words but may not exceed 35,000 words (between 100 and 130 pages). The thesis is comprised of the following steps:

  • Preparation of a research proposal
  • Theoretical framework
  • Methodology
  • Data collection
  • Data analysis
  • Thesis preparation
  • Thesis defence before a committee of professors

The thesis supervisor, or co-supervisor, will form a thesis committee to help guide the thesis, and may discuss the selection of thesis committee members with the student. The committee will comprise the following members:

  • the thesis supervisor or co-supervisor;
  • two other professors who have expertise in fields related to the thesis project. One member may be from another faculty.

The student is responsible for submitting through service request the  Master's Thesis Committee Member List . This form will state the research topic along with the names of the thesis committee members.

The thesis proposal

The student drafts a thesis proposal, whose length should not exceed 20 pages (excluding tables and list of references) using the following conventions: 1.5 line spacing; Times New Roman, 12-point font; 2.5cm margins, numbered pages and single-side printing.

This document will include the following elements:

  • statement of problem;
  • theoretical or conceptual framework;
  • literature review;
  • one or more research questions;
  • a methodological framework (e.g. a research plan, participants, tools, procedure);
  • the contribution of the research to the field of education;
  • a relevant and exhaustive list of references.

The order in which these elements are presented may vary.

Although there is no evaluation grid for the thesis proposal, the committee members will submit written comments to the thesis supervisor before the approval meeting between the thesis supervisor, the committee members and the student.

Thesis approval meeting

The thesis supervisor and the committee members will meet to discuss their evaluation of the thesis proposal with the student, who will be advised on how to improve the quality of his/her research.

In light of this discussion, the thesis committee will take one of the following decisions:

  • Option 1:  Satisfactory –  The student may continue to conduct the research as proposed.
  • Option 2:  Unsatisfactory  – The student may not continue to conduct the research as proposed. In such cases, the reasons for this decision are stated and the student must submit a revised version of the research proposal to the committee and another meeting of the committee must take place. A grade of NS will be entered in the students file.

The supervisor submits a duly completed  Approval of the Master of Arts in Education (MA) Thesis Proposal  form to the academic secretariat at  [email protected] , and a copy of the form is added to the student’s file.

Ethics approval

Once the research proposal has been approved, the student will submit a request for ethics approval for any research involving human subjects to the  Office of Research Ethics and Integrity . Students who fail to comply with this requirement may be subject to academic sanctions.

When requesting ethics approval, the student will need to submit a duly signed copy of the  Approval of the Master of Arts in Education (MA) Thesis Proposal  as proof that the thesis proposal has been approved.

Thesis format

1. monograph thesis.

The monograph thesis is the most usual form in the humanities and social sciences and it resembles a non-fiction book in that it deals in depth with a particular topic.

In a monograph thesis, a student presents a proposition or a “thesis” and the research findings to support it. The student reads existing research on the topics and may accept or reject it partially or totally.

The thesis usually follows a simple overall format: it begins with an introduction, which is followed by a main section or several sections, and ends with a conclusion. The students should keep these in mind but also remember that not all of these components will be required or even recommended for the particular field of study, so it is always best if they check with their own academic unit and supervisor.

For more information please consult the following link:  Monograph components .

2. Article-format thesis

Students who wish to write a thesis in an article format must first notify the thesis supervisor, co-supervisor and thesis committee members, and obtain their approval. The student must submit a request at  [email protected]  for approval from the Faculty’s graduate studies director by checking of the appropriate box on the  Approval of the Master of Arts in Education (MA) Thesis Proposal  form.

A thesis submitted in article format must meet the following requirements:

  • The article must be substantial and equivalent to a monograph. The student must be the sole, or first and principle, author. If the student is not the sole author, the student must have contributed at least two-thirds of the original content and writing of the article. The student must formally specify his/her contribution. The article must be considered equivalent to a master’s thesis.
  • The article may have been published during the student’s time as an active student. Alternatively, it may have been submitted for publication, or may be in the form of a manuscript ready for submission for publication, in a peer-reviewed academic journal. If the article has already been published, a copy of the article as published must be included in the thesis, with the permission of the journal. If the committee members require changes or additions, these must be added as an appendix, since a published article cannot be modified.
  • The manuscript must be typed, with 1.5 line spacing in 12-point, Times New Roman font with 2.5cm margins. The manuscript must be page numbered, single-paged (printed on one side only) and unbound.

For more information please consult the following link:  Components of a thesis in a series of articles.

Submission of the thesis for evaluation

Master’s students must submit a service request through uoZone four weeks before submitting their thesis for evaluation, failing to do so will delay the evaluation process. This request must include the following document:

  • The  List of examiners for the evaluation of the thesis  form that includes at least two eligible internal examiners.

The service request will be sent to the program director for approval.

Review how to submit a service request.

The  Approval of the Master's Thesis Deposit  form must be signed by all committee members and thesis supervisor and must be submitted with the thesis in  uoZone .

Check the  Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website  for information on thesis submission, evaluation and defence.

Master's Thesis Topics in Education

Talk over potential topics with peers to help narrow down your ideas.

Culminating your knowledge of education into a master's thesis can be a tricky task, but in choosing the right topic, it can become less difficult. In a thesis, your goal is to identify a specific issue and address your own hypothesis in relation to that issue through intensive research. In choosing that issue, consider broad topics of interest in education that you will further narrow down into a specific research question.

  • Curriculum Content
  • Assessment Methods
  • Classroom Environment
  • Extracurricular Activities

1 Curriculum Content

Curriculum content is an important theme in education and refers to what is being taught in the classroom. Consider writing your thesis concerning what makes one curriculum plan better than another. Perhaps you want to study the impact of schoolwide curriculum plans versus individual classroom curriculum plans. You can explore the debate over state and national curriculum versus local curriculum or look at how they can work together. Think about incorporating the use of textbooks into your discussion of curriculum. You can narrow down these ideas within the curriculum theme by looking at specific subjects or grade levels.

2 Assessment Methods

How to assess student learning is an ongoing debate in the field of education and makes for a great research topic for a master’s thesis. Look at different types of assessment methods, how assessments are given or the influence of assessment on student success. Refine this topic by exploring specific issues such as standardized testing, test-taking strategies or teaching for a test. You can also look into alternative assessment methods, such as project-based learning. Research what types of assessment work better than others and make suggestions to those in your field on the best way to proceed with assessments in schools.

3 Classroom Environment

Students spend a lot of time in the classroom, so consider exploring what goes on in the classroom for your thesis. Consider the classroom environment by looking at things such as the classroom design and decoration, such as seating arrangements, sound systems and lighting. The classroom environment also encompasses the teaching strategies and discipline methods utilized. Research these specific issues and how they influence student behavior and attitude to make suggestions for how to provide students with the optimal conditions for success.

4 Extracurricular Activities

Student involvement is an important part of school life, so look at the influence particular programs have on students. You can focus on programs or activities that take place in or out of school. Consider researching the influence of specific reading programs that serve to benefit the regular curriculum. Look at the influence of student involvement in sports, and research the positive and negative benefits associated with these types of extracurricular activities. You can also go beyond the influence of extracurricular activities and suggest specific ways to increase student involvement in programs already proven to increase student success in school.

MSc dissertations

Limited copying is possible (no more than 5% or one chapter) for personal research use. No quotation or information derived from an MSc dissertation may be published without the written consent of the author of the dissertation. The Higher Degrees office may be able to help you wish to contact an author, but usually you can find possible contact details via an internet search.

Theses & dissertations

To find theses and dissertations in oxford.

On SOLO - just add the word thesis  to your searches. For instance, if you search for oxford thesis education  and then use the Resource Type filter to choose Theses (Oxford) , you will get a large selection of theses & dissertations on educational topics. The results will include both Masters dissertations and Doctoral theses and come from various departments including the Department of Education.

If you add "department of education*"  then the search will bring back theses & dissertations produced in the Department of Education prior to 2020. The asterisk at the end of 'education*' ensures the results will include older theses dissertations from when the Department was called Educational Studies. NB. More recent dissertations are not tagged with information about the Department

You could try adding particular research methods, but be aware that most older dissertations have not been catalogued with any information about research methods used.

A growing number of Oxford theses & dissertations are available online. These will be included in the results of your SOLO searches once the thesis or dissertation has been deposited into ORA . You can also search ORA directly using course codes, e.g. ALSLA, CIE2021 etc.

  • Theses submitted recently may take a while to be processed and to appear on SOLO - you may need to check back periodically to see new additions.

MSc Dissertations in the Education Library

On the open shelves in the Education Library you will find older printed copies of MSc Education, ALSLA and ALLT dissertations. Some years we were able to indicate which dissertations which received distinctions by marking these with a red dot on the spine. Please note that very few dissertations are available from 2020 as the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic meant the requirement for students to submit a hard copy was waived (and only a few students chose to submit online copies to the library). Since 2021 dissertations are primarily submitted online with optional donation of a hard copy to the library shelves. Submission is voluntary so the library does not have every dissertation submitted each year.

MSc dissertations are shelved on the far wall of the Front Reading Room. These are for consultation in the library only and cannot be borrowed.

MSc dissertations are grouped first by course, e.g. ALSLA, Higher Education, and within each course are arranged alphabetically by author’s surname.

To search for MSc dissertations on SOLO type:   "department  of education*"  thesis M.Sc.  using the  Oxford Collections  search filter. Most of the results will be our dissertations.

You could also include author surnames or keywords in your search.

A list of the titles, authors and supervisors of the more recent Department of Education MSc Education and ALSLA dissertations is available from this page. A printed list is also available within the library.

Older MSc dissertations are stored offsite in the Collections Storage Facility. They can be requested to the Education Library (or any other Bodleian Library) and consulted there (not borrowed).

MSc dissertations from other courses

MSc Learning & Teaching (MLT), MSc Teacher Education (MTed), MSc Educational Assessment (MEA) and MSc Medical Education (MedEd)  students are asked to submit an online copy of their dissertation. Exemplar dissertations are chosen to be made available online via  ORA  - simply type the course code, e.g.  MLT

Lists of recent theses & dissertations

  • MSc dissertations on ORA A list of MSc Education, ALSLA and ALLT dissertations available online. Updated Feb 2024.
  • List of recommended MSc dissertations and DPhil theses Recommended by supervisors across the Departent of Education. Updated Oct 2021

Please note that very few dissertations are available from 2020.

DPhil Theses

DPhil theses are stored offsite in the Collections Storage Facility. They can be requested to the Weston Library and consulted there (not borrowed).

To search for departmental DPhil theses on SOLO  type:  "department  of education*" thesis D Phil  using the  Oxford Collections  search filter.

Note that it is important to include a space between the 'D' and the 'Phil'. You could also include author surnames or keywords in your search.

In recent years DPhil candidates have been required to deposit an online copy of their thesis with ORA. These can be found via SOLO . Occasionally a thesis may be embargoed so that the full text is not available for a few years.

A list of the titles, authors and supervisors of the more recent Department of Education DPhil theses is available from this page. A printed list is also available within the library.

Supervisors in the Department have also made a short list of ‘recommended theses’ that students can draw on for inspiration about layout, format and more substantive issues. The list includes some DPhil and MSc theses with the reason for recommendation, e.g. substantive, methodological, well written etc.

  • About NC State

Grad Student Profile: Dion Harry

Dion Harry

Dion Harry is a fourth-year doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership, Policy, and Human Development with a concentration in Higher Education Opportunity, Equity, and Justice. Dion is originally from Lynchburg, SC, and is a proud product of Lee County School District in South Carolina. He is a two-time graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science in Health Science (Health Promotion and Education) and a Master of Education in Counselor Education (Student Affairs).

Before coming to NC State, Dion served as an admissions counselor (at Piedmont Technical College and Clemson University) and an academic advisor for students majoring in general engineering (at Clemson University). Since being at NC State, Dion has gained additional experience in residential learning, college-level teaching, and research, assessment, and evaluation.

Dion’s research agenda primarily focuses on the well-being of college students from historically excluded communities, with his dissertation topic focusing on the experiences of the well-being of Black queer and trans college students. With his research, Dion desires to help higher education become an environment where these communities feel included, supported, and can thrive at our institutions.

Tell us about your journey to graduate school and what led you to NC State. I pursued my doctorate because I fell in love with research as a master’s student and knew that was one of the primary ways I wanted to help advance the field of higher education. That said, I knew pursuing this degree would equip me with the knowledge and skills to do quality and innovative work that focused on making higher education more accessible, diverse, and inclusive.

I came to NC State for multiple reasons. For starters, some of my research and professional interests aligned with the work of my advisor and dissertation chair, Dr. Joy Gaston Gayles. In particular, her work focuses on inclusion and equity in higher education, with one of her core focus areas being the experiences of women and people of color in STEM, which is an area I am passionate about. In addition, my program focuses on and encourages research and practice centered on principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion within higher education, which caught my attention as I was looking for programs to support the work I wanted to do. Lastly, I was also intrigued by the possibilities opportunities being in Triangle would bring me from a professional standpoint. Since being here, I’ve connected and partnered with institutions and organizations within the area and across the state.

Tell us about your research and/or teaching experience. My research focuses on various contexts of postsecondary education and primarily sits within three main areas – the experiences queer and trans people of color, broadening participation in STEM education, and the experiences of students attending community and technical colleges. Since being in my program, I’ve been able to engage in quality research experiences to learn and share knowledge on each of these. For example, I have collaborated with the Department of Biological Sciences to explore students’ sense of belonging and perceptions of their department’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. In addition, I have collaborated with the Belk Center for Community College Leadership and Research to understand how community colleges in NC engage and support adult learners and how community colleges in rural areas of the state advance equity on their campuses. With my dissertation study, I have been able to explore the experiences and well-being of Black queer and trans college students and the ways they experience joy. Other research experiences have included exploring the experiences of Black STEM students at HBCUs, practices that contribute to the success of women and students of color in engineering, the experiences of graduate students of color navigating PWIs, and understanding the ways multicultural student affairs professionals conceptualize and are socialized to do the work they do on campus.

Aside from research, I’ve been afforded opportunities to teach every year I’ve been at NC State. On the undergraduate level, I co-taught a Community Leadership class for first-year students in the Impact Leadership Village. For the Higher Education Administration master’s program, I co-taught the Student Development Theory, Assessment, and Diversity course. For the Higher Education Opportunity, Equity, and Justice, I’ve co-taught the Reflective Practice and Research Inquiry course for our first-year doctoral students. All of these experiences have affirmed my love for teaching and have largely influenced my decision to pursue the professoriate after graduating.

How has the Graduate School and/or NC State helped you with your professional development? Overall, the College of Education does a great job empowering graduate students to become more involved in conducting and sharing research. Aside from taking methods courses, I have seen our college be intentional about providing us with a plethora of resources, hosting talks and panels about education research, and encouraging us (the students) to share the work that we’re doing within the college and the professional organizations that align with our interests. These experiences have been extremely beneficial to me and have helped me become more confident as a researcher.

In addition, I have also been able to benefit from the dual support of the Graduate School and the Southern Regional Educational Board (SREB) as a Doctoral Scholar. The goal of the Doctoral Scholar Program is to increase the number of students of color who earn doctorates and go on to pursue faculty and other roles related to their field. In addition to financial support, being involved in the SREB at NC State has allowed me to build a community with other doctoral scholars at NC State. Another benefit is the funding support to attend the annual Institute for Teaching and Mentoring, which is curated for doctoral students of color to learn strategies necessary to survive the rigors of graduate school, earn a doctoral degree, and succeed as members in academia or industry. Being in these spaces has allowed me to build my networks and learn about opportunities within academia to promote my professional growth.

What advice do you have for new or current graduate students? Find time to rest and lean into your joy! The graduate school experience has highs and lows and can take up much of your time. However, you must take care of yourself to be your most effective self! As you balance the demands of grad school, make sure you take moments to rest, recharge, and do the things that bring you the most joy.

What are your plans after graduation? I have been applying and interviewing for jobs that will give me space to engage in education and equity-related research and teaching. Most of these jobs have been tenure-track assistant professor roles and research roles with different organizations nationwide.

Fun fact about yourself. I am a big fan of musicals!
