ഹോളിവുഡ് സിനിമകളിലൂടെ മാത്രം നമ്മള്‍ കണ്ട പോസ്റ്റ് അപ്പോകലിപ്റ്റിക് യുഗത്തെ മിത്തുകളും പുരാണങ്ങളുമായി സംയോജിപ്പിച്ചൊരുക്കിയ നാഗ് അശ്വിന്റെ ‘സിനിമാറ്റിക് മാർവൽ’ ആണ് ‘കൽക്കി 2898 എഡി’. കെട്ടുകഥകളെയും പുരാണങ്ങളെയും അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി നിരവധി സിനിമകള്‍ വന്നിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഭൂതകാലത്തെയും ഭാവിയെയും ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സയൻസ് ഫിക്‌ഷൻ സിനിമ വരുന്നത് ഇതാദ്യമാകും. എഐ ടെക്നോളജിയും റോബട്ടുകളും അരങ്ങു വാഴുന്ന ലോകത്ത് ഗാണ്ഡീവത്തിനും (അർജുനന്റെ വില്ല്) ചിരഞ്ജീവിയായ അശ്വത്ഥാമാവിനും എന്തു കാര്യം ? അവിടെയാണ് നാഗ് അശ്വിന്റെ ഈ ‘സാങ്കൽപ്പിക കഥ’ കെട്ടുകഥകൾക്കും അപ്പുറമുള്ള കാഴ്ചാവിസ്മയായി മാറുന്നത്.

ബി.സി 3101-ലെ മഹാഭാരത ഇതിഹാസ സംഭവങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് തുടങ്ങി 2898 എ.ഡി വരെ സംഭവിക്കുന്ന സഹസ്രാബ്ദങ്ങള്‍ നീണ്ടുനില്‍ക്കുന്ന യാത്രയാണ് കല്‍ക്കിയുടെ ഇതിവൃത്തം. കുരുക്ഷേത്ര യുദ്ധം കഴിഞ്ഞ് 6000 വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷമുള്ള ലോകം. ലോകത്തെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന രണ്ട് നഗരങ്ങളാണ് കാശിയും ശംഭാലയും. ശംഭാല പ്രതീക്ഷയുടെ നഗരമാണെങ്കിൽ കാശി നാശത്തിന്റെ വക്കിലാണ്. ഗംഗാ നദി വറ്റിവരണ്ടു, ആഹാരം കിട്ടാക്കനിയായി. ജീവൻ നിലനിർത്താൻ ആവശ്യമായതെല്ലാം ഒരു മനുഷ്യനിർമിത കോംപ്ലക്‌സിനുള്ളിലാണ്. പാവപ്പെട്ടവന് അങ്ങോട്ടേക്ക് കടക്കാനാകില്ല. ആകാശത്തില്‍ നിൽക്കുന്ന തലതിരിഞ്ഞ പിരമിഡ് ഘടനയാണ് കോംപ്ലക്സ് സിറ്റിയുടേത്. അത് ഭരിക്കുന്നത് സുപ്രീം യാസ്കിൻ എന്ന 200 വർഷം പ്രായമുള്ള ഒരു രാക്ഷസനും. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ കാലം കഴിഞ്ഞെന്നും താനാണ് ഇനി ആ സ്ഥാനത്തെന്നുമാണ് യാസ്കിൻ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നത്. കാശിയിലെ ഒരു ബൗണ്ടി ഹണ്ടറാണ് ഭൈരവ. എങ്ങനെയും കുറച്ച് വിമതരെ പിടികൂടെ പോയിന്റ് സമ്പാദിച്ച് കോംപ്ലക്സിനുള്ളിൽ കയറിക്കൂടുകയാണ് ഭൈരവയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം.

വിമതരുടെ നഗരമാണ് ശംഭാല. മെച്ചപ്പെട്ട നാളേക്ക് വേണ്ടി ജീവൻ പണയപ്പെടുത്താൻ തയാറുള്ള വ്യത്യസ്ത വിശ്വാസങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും സംസ്കാരങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുമുള്ള ആളുകളുടെ അഭയകേന്ദ്രം. അവരിൽ നിന്നും പല പോരാളികളും സുപ്രീം യാസ്കിനെ എതിരിടാൻ ഇറങ്ങിത്തിരിക്കാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അവസാനം മരണമായിരിക്കും ഫലം. മറിയം എന്ന സ്ത്രീയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ശംഭാലയിലെ ചിലര്‍ ഒരു അവതാര പിറവി സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നുണ്ട്. 

അലർട്ടിൽ ‘അടികൂടി’ അമിത് ഷായും പിണറായിയും; ഡോപ്ലർ റഡാറിന് സ്ഥലമില്ല, ഇറക്കാൻ കാശുമില്ല; ആരനുവദിക്കും ഇനി വയനാട്ടിലെ തുരങ്കം!

ഭൂമിയോ വീടോ സ്വർണമോ വിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ? അറിഞ്ഞിരിക്കണം ബജറ്റ് തിരുത്തിയ കേന്ദ്രത്തിന്റെ ‘യു ടേൺ’

അന്ന് അസാൻജെ പോയത് ‘മരണ’ ദ്വീപിൽ: കടലിൽ മൃതദേഹങ്ങൾ: കാഴ്ചകൾ കണ്ടവർ അദ്ഭുതപ്പെട്ടു; ആത്മാക്കൾക്കൊപ്പം ജീവിതമോ?

അതേ സമയം തന്നെ ചിരഞ്ജീവിയായ അശ്വത്ഥാമായും തന്‍റെ മോക്ഷകാലത്തിനായി കാത്തിരിക്കുകയാണ്. മഹാ കുരക്ഷേത്ര യുദ്ധത്തിൽ അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരേയൊരു മനുഷ്യൻ. മഹാവിഷ്‌ണുവിന്റെ പത്താമത്തേതും അവസാനത്തേതുമായ കൽക്കിയുടെ അവതാരപ്പിറവിക്കു വേണ്ടി ശേഷിച്ച ജന്മം അവശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന മഹാമേരുവാണ് അശ്വത്ഥാമാ. 

മൂന്ന് മണിക്കൂർ ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള സിനിമയുടെ ആദ്യ പകുതി ‘കൽക്കി’ യൂണിവേഴ്സിന്റെ അകക്കാഴ്ചകളിലേക്കും ഭൈരവ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തിലേക്കുമാണ് ഫോക്കസ് ചെയ്യുന്നത്. സിനിമയുടെ തുടക്കത്തിലും ആദ്യ പകുതിയുടെ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും അൽപം വിരസത കാണാം. പ്രഭാസിന്റെ ആദ്യ ഇൻട്രൊ സീനും നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തി. എന്നാൽ അമിതാഭ് ബച്ചന്റെ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ വരവോടെയാണ് സിനിമയുടെ ഗതി മാറുന്നത്. നേരത്തെ പറഞ്ഞ വിരസത മാറി സിനിമ രസകരവും ത്രില്ലിങ്ങുമാകുന്നു. പിന്നീടങ്ങോട്ട് ക്ലൈമാക്സ് വരെ സിനിമ കാണികളെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്ന അനുഭവമാണ് ‘കൽക്കി’ സമ്മാനിക്കുന്നത്. 

പ്രഭാസിന്‍റെ ശക്തമായ തിരിച്ചുവരവാണ് ചിത്രം. ക്ലൈമാക്സിനോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ചാണ് ശരിക്കും ചിത്രത്തിലെ ഹീറോയായി പ്രഭാസ് പരിണമിക്കുന്നതെന്നു പറയാം. നായകനായി സംവിധായകൻ കാത്തുവച്ച സെക്കൻഡ് ഇൻട്രൊയും ക്ലൈമാക്സിലാണ്. ‍അശ്വത്ഥാമയായി എത്തുന്ന അമിതാഭ് ബച്ചനാണ് കൽക്കി ആദ്യ ഭാഗത്തിൽ കലക്കിയതെന്ന് നിസംശയം പറയാം. ആക്‌ഷൻ രംഗങ്ങളിലും ഡയലോഗ് ഡെലിവറിയിലും സ്ക്രീൻ പ്രസൻസിലുമൊക്കെ ബച്ചൻ എല്ലാവരെയും കടത്തി വെട്ടി. രണ്ടേ രണ്ട് സീനുകളിൽ മാത്രമാണ് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നതെങ്കിലും സുപ്രീം യാസ്കിൻ ശക്തനായ വില്ലനായി കമല്‍ഹാസൻ ഞെട്ടിക്കും. സംഭാഷണരീതിയിലും ഗെറ്റപ്പിലും ഈ കഥാപാത്രത്തിലും പുതുമ കൊണ്ടുവരാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനായി. 

കൽക്കിയുടെ അമ്മയായ സുമതി എന്ന ശക്തയായ കഥാപാത്രമായി ദീപിക പദുക്കോൺ എത്തുന്നു. മലയാളി താരങ്ങളായ ശോഭന, അന്നാ ബെന്‍ എന്നിവർക്കും മികച്ച വേഷം തന്നെയാണ് നാഗ് നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. പരിമിതമായ സ്ക്രീൻ ടൈമിലും തന്റേതായ പ്രകടനം കൊണ്ട് ശ്രദ്ധനേടാൻ അന്ന ബെന്നിനു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ശോഭനയാണ് ശംഭാലയിലെ മറിയമാകുന്നത്. പശുപതി, ബ്രഹ്മാനന്ദം തുടങ്ങി വമ്പന്‍താരനിര ചിത്രത്തിലുണ്ട്. സിനിമയുടെ തുടക്ക ഭാഗത്തിൽ റൂമിയായി എത്തുന്നത് നടൻ രാജേന്ദ്ര പ്രസാദ് ആണ്. കാശിയിലെ കമാൻഡർ ആയ മാനസ് ആയി സ്വസ്ത ഛാറ്റർജി ഗംഭീര പ്രകടനം കാഴ്ചവയ്ക്കുന്നു.റോക്സിയായെത്തുന്ന ദിഷ പഠാണിക്ക് സിനിമയിൽ കാര്യമായൊന്നും ചെയ്യാനില്ല. സുപ്രീം യാസ്കിന്റെ വലംകയ്യായി എത്തുന്ന കൗൺസ്‌ലർ ബാണിയായി അനിൽ ജോർജ് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു.

രണ്ട് ജനപ്രിയ സംവിധായകർ ചിത്രത്തിൽ അതിഥി വേഷങ്ങളിൽ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. ബുജ്ജി (കീർത്തി സുരേഷിന്റെ വോയ്‌സ്ഓവറിനൊപ്പം) എന്ന ഭൈരവയുടെ AI പവേർഡ് വാഹനവും സിനിമയിലെ ഏറ്റവും രസമുള്ള കഥാപാത്രമായി. ട്രെയിലറിൽ കാണിക്കുന്ന ചില കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ (മാളവിക നായർ) തുടക്കം മാത്രം വന്നുപോകുന്നു. ചെറുതെങ്കിലും ദുൽഖറിന്റെയും വിജയ് ദേവരകൊണ്ടയുടെയും മൃണാൾ ഠാക്കൂറിന്റെയും വേഷങ്ങൾ കയ്യടി നേടി.  

ഹോളിവുഡുമായി താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യാനാകില്ലെങ്കിലും ബജറ്റു വച്ചു നോക്കുമ്പോൾ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സിനിമ കണ്ട ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച വിഎഫ്എക്സ് വര്‍ക്കുകള്‍ ചിത്രത്തിലുണ്ടെന്ന് പറയാം. 600 കോടി ബജറ്റിൽ ഒരു രൂപ പോലും അനാവശ്യമായി ചിലവഴിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ഫൈറ്റ് രംഗങ്ങളിലെ പെർഫെക്‌ഷനൊക്കെ ഒരു വിഷ്വൽ ട്രീറ്റ് തന്നെ സമ്മാനിക്കും, പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും ക്ലൈമാക്സിലെ യുദ്ധ രംഗങ്ങളും മറ്റും ഇതിനുദാഹരണം.  

ബ്ലേഡ് റണ്ണർ, മാഡ് മാക്സ്, ബുക്ക് ഓഫ് എലി, ചിൽഡ്രൺ ഓഫ് മെൻ തുടങ്ങിയ പോസ്റ്റ് അപ്പോകലിപ്റ്റിക് സിനിമകൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന മായാലോകം പോലൊന്ന് നാഗ് അശ്വിനും നിർമിച്ചു. ‘മഹാനടി’ പോലൊരു മോഡേൺ ‘ക്ലാസിക്’ സമ്മാനിച്ച സംവിധായകന്റെ മൂന്നാമത്തെ മുഴുനീള സിനിമയാണ് കൽക്കി. ബ്ലാക് പാന്തർ, ഡ്യൂൾ പോലുള്ള സിനിമകളിലെ പ്രചോദനം ചില രംഗങ്ങളിൽ കാണാം. എന്നാൽ തന്നെയും മുടക്കിയ പണത്തിന് അതേ മൂല്യമുള്ള ഘടകങ്ങൾ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്താണ് സിനിമ ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ക്വാളിറ്റിയിലും സാങ്കേതികത്തികവിലും ഒരു വിട്ടുവീഴ്ചയ്‌ക്കും സംവിധായകൻ തയാറായിട്ടില്ല. അളന്നു കുറിച്ച ഫ്രെയിമുകൾ സിനിമയെ ലോകോത്തര നിലവാരത്തിലെത്തിക്കുന്നു.

ഛായാഗ്രഹണം, എഡിറ്റിങ്, പ്രൊഡക്‌ഷന്‍ ഡിസൈൻ തുടങ്ങിയ മറ്റു സാങ്കേതിക വശങ്ങളെല്ലാം ഒന്നിനൊന്നു മെച്ചം. സന്തോഷ് നാരായണന്റെ സംഗീതവും എടുത്തുപറയേണ്ടതാണ്. ഗാനങ്ങളൊന്നും തന്നെ സിനിമയിലില്ല. 

സ്റ്റാർവാർ യൂണിവേഴ്സിൽ ‘മഹാഭാരതം’ സംഭവിച്ചാൽ എങ്ങനെയിരിക്കും ? അതാണ് ചുരുക്കത്തിൽ കൽക്കി. ഇന്ത്യൻ സിനിമയിൽ ഇൗ ചിത്രവുമായി താരതമ്യപ്പെടുത്താവുന്ന ഒന്ന് ഇതുവരെ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടില്ലെന്നതാണ് പ്രേക്ഷകർക്കുള്ള ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സർപ്രൈസ്. ‘കൽക്കി’ സിനിമാറ്റിക് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സ് പോലൊരു സിനിമാനിരയിലേക്കുള്ള ആദ്യ പടിയായ ഇൗ ചിത്രം ഉറപ്പായും തിയറ്ററിൽ തന്നെ കണ്ടിരിക്കേണ്ട ഒന്നാണ്. 

വാൽക്കഷ്ണം: സിനിമയുടെ ത്രിഡി, ഐമാക്സ് പതിപ്പുകളും റിലീസ് ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ത്രിഡി മികവാർന്ന അനുഭവമാകും സമ്മാനിക്കുക. അമിതാഭ് ബച്ചന്റെ യഥാർഥ ശബ്ദത്തിൽ ‘കൽക്കി’യുടെ ഹിന്ദി പതിപ്പും കമൽഹാസന്റെയും പ്രഭാസിന്റെയും ശബ്ദത്തിൽ തമിഴും തെലുങ്കും കാണുന്നതും നന്നായിരിക്കും.

Kalki is a powerful cop who likes to find a permanent solution to any issue. He is someone who thinks large and doesn't mind going to any extent to taste success. His practices might not always be legal but his main purpose would be for the greater good. The treatment could be loud and not practically possible but it sticks to its theme right throughout. When you are going to write a story about good versus evil, you need to have something fresh since it is an age-old template story line. But sadly, Kalki offers nothing new. That’s probably the biggest minus for the film.

Kalki has an interesting core story; both the writers Pravin and Sujin have come up with a decently engaging screenplay but the audiences are ahead of the proceedings throughout; they know what is going to happen next and how this film is going to travel. The editor does have major work to do, as he has so many scenes to maneuver with, than a normal commercial film. Though you laud him for giving us a crisp product, we also need to point out the fact that the final product is not smooth and a few scenes get completed even before the on screen proceedings are over.

Tovino Thomas has given it his all, be it the fierce dialogue delivery or his mannerisms. This is one of his best performances to date. For fans who have been waiting to see him in full-on action mode, Kalki must be satisfying. Samyuktha Menon makes no impact whatsoever. She only appears in a very few scenes, which hardly add any purpose to the plot. Even if you remove her character from the film, nothing will actually change. Shivajith, as the main villain, looks deadly and is perfect for the role.

The film offers a well-judged balance of vigorous action and intense social drama, without any unwanted deviations like romantic tracks or songs. Kalki manages to shift sensitively from drama to intense action mode. But the main problem here is that the social angle gets diluted because of the mass scenes, which again don’t give you an adrenaline rush. The film offers scope for clap-worthy mass moments but the execution part goes wrong. The climax looks hurried and could have been much better. The film runs just below 2 and a 1/2 hours, which seems a tad lengthy. The BGM is powerful but at times repetitive.

Verdict: KALKI - A typical mass cop film that has nothing new to offer!

KALKI MOVIE REVIEW

Praveen Prabharam's Kalki opens on a promisig note. A do-gooder politician/comrade explains the exodus of Tamil migrants taking place in the badlands of Nanchenkota. The film makes no mistake  by introducing the antagonist at the first place. The film also introduces a timid policeman who kills himself after realising his helplessness when innocents are killed by the town's goons, headed by Amarnath (played by Shivjith), a ruthless politician. Despite having a good setup, the film results in a middling payoff.

Kalki follows the story of a new S.I (played by Tovino Thomas), who gets stationed in Nanchenkota in order to fill the position left by the former sub-inspector's suicide. The new S.I's strict and unorthodox ways to curb crime leaves the villains in deep trouble, as they gear up for an upcoming election. The film's beginning is preceded by one mass moment after another, which adds less to the story, but gives the film's hero an opportunity to power-walk in slow motion. The film turns into a disjointed compilation of mass moments that unfold in ninety-six frames per second.

The film under-utilizes its characters. There is a character of a rookie cop who specializes in engineering, but the ability is used nowhere in the film (except for a minor gag that happens to be the film's most surprising moment). S.I rarely faces any challenges from the villain, as a result, we feel less disconnected with the character since we can easily predict his next move. The overbearing familiarity of Kalki becomes a key issue with the film. For instance, first half ends with the killing of Amar's menacing henchman Umar (played by Harish Uthaman), but the scene fails to provide the necessary closure when we know that this is the inevitable end.

The first half is overstretched with low-impact mass moments that act like fillers, and reckless usage of slo-mo sequences. We step into a second half where the film attempts to catch ahold of its initial premise. We see the hero rise up to the occasion and act as a messiah of the weak. There are some intriguing character-revealing moments thrown in too. But the film would've benefitted more had the writing introduced those subplots during the first half itself. We see a lot of character deaths in the second half, but those moments create lesser impact since the hero overshadows their presence right from the start.

The film plays to the gallery when it comes to performances. Barring Tovino Thomas' fine presence, the acting is as generic as the film's plot. Certain portions of Kalki bear an uncanny resemblance to many recent action-masala flicks, but no amount of moments can salvage the protagonist's heroism when the villain is presented in a clownish manner, who can only defeat the hero in a staring competition. The film's drawback is its flabby writing, which throws one heroic moment after another without making it more organic to the plot. Apart from a few hum-worthy songs, Kalki is an umnimaginative action film with very few engaging moments.

Kalki Movie Review: Charming and occasionally rousing, but lacks punch

It’s admirable that the writers have not tried to carve Tovino Thomas’ protagonist in the image of the action heroes they grew up with. Despite being fearless and cocky, the character has been made to look like a chain-smoking everyman who at times seems like an extension of Tovino’s character from  Theevandi.

Though the film is titled  Kalki , I don’t recall any of the other characters calling him that. He is mostly referred to as the “S.I”. This makes him, in my eyes, a man with no name, like the iconic bounty hunter played by Clint Eastwood in the Dollars  trilogy. But I’ll call him K. He is essentially a Malayalam-speaking, khaki-clad cowboy who arrives to clean up a mostly arid land ruled by a fascist party. The police are held captive in their police stations and there is not a single lawyer in sight. The inhabitants are terrified at the thought of defying the party’s main strongman Amarnath (Shivajith), a dictator-like figure dreaded by everyone except his brother Appu (Vinu Vishwalal) and cousin Sangeetha (Samyuktha). It’s a setting characteristic of many iconic American westerns, captured effectively by cinematographer Gautham Shankar.

The film begins and ends with a punch but everything else in between feels relatively dull. K’s fiery entry—both literally and figuratively—would please a lot of Tovino fans. It goes without saying that the actor’s natural charisma helps to a great degree. In one scene, K tells a thug he is made up of iron and later he is seen drinking with his sub-ordinates. Though Tovino holds his own in the action sequences, Jakes Bejoy’s score can only do so much. Before K’s arrival, a considerable amount of time is spent establishing the villains, giving us a sense of the nasty things they’re capable of. Shivajith and Harish Uthaman are delightfully menacing, but then the film suffers from a ‘Marvel villain’ problem—the payoff doesn’t quite do justice to the build-up.

But putting aside Tovino’s charm, I’m in two minds about whether K is really a compelling figure. There seems to be some confusion as to whether to project him as an everyman or a superhero. It’s this contradiction that sometimes works to the film’s detriment. There have been action heroes in Malayalam cinema who are grounded and driven by an emotional backstory. However, in an action film of this sort, where the hero is bold enough to take on a bunch of thugs at the same time, I’d rather the hero didn’t have a backstory unless it’s something we haven’t seen before. A hero like this can be cool enough without a half-baked background to anchor his personality. K would’ve been a much interesting character had there been a certain level of detachment between him and us. Remember Bharatchandran IPS (from  Commissioner ) or Thevalliparambil Joseph Alex (from  The King )? There was nothing relatable about them—they were not one of us—and that’s what made them cooler.

Having said that, there are a couple of cleverly written comical sequences that one doesn’t expect a larger-than-life action hero to be part of. These moments actually have a bigger purpose: to get the audiences to emotionally invest in a lovable supporting character who plays a pivotal part in the hero’s journey in the second half. But the same cannot be said for other background characters who are there just to take the edge off when things get a bit too intense. Though Samyuktha Menon’s Dr. Sangeetha doesn’t make a significant contribution—it feels like her character was written just to make up for the absence of a main female lead—it’s nice to see the actor try something different.

As something designed for a wider audience,  Kalki  has a few challenges to deal with.

1) To satiate the appetite of cineastes who grew up with the legacy of films like  Moonaam Mura , Commissioner ,  or  Inspector Balram ,

2) To prove Tovino’s capabilities as an ‘action hero’, and

3) To present an admirable action hero for the present generation.

I’m sure about the second, but not the other two.

This movie is a testament to how misleading trailers can be. I initially watched the trailer almost more than a year back and was sad that I couldn’t watch it where I resided. 'Kalki 2898AD' Review: An aesthetically stunning film with a matrix of narratives

'Kalki 2898AD' has a simple story at heart, a tale from the future about the arrival of the tenth avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu. But it is decked up in a herculean, futuristic setting for three hours that partly thrills, confuses and also exhausts the audience. An immersive experience in terms of its scale, the dystopian, mythological science fiction also has a flood of characters and cameos whose arrival and relevance are tough to keep track of. 'Kalki' is set more than 800 years into the future in 2898 AD. In Kasi, which is the last city on a severely resource-drained Earth, Supreme Yaskin (Kamal Hassan) rules humanity from a structure called ‘Complex’. His people seize fertile girls and SUM80 (Deepika Padukone) is one among them.

Meanwhile, the mythological Ashwathama (Amitabh Bachchan) is waiting for someone’s arrival for his redemption after ages. Another group of people, in the city of Shambhala, are also planning an assault. An unbeatable bounty hunter named Bhairava (Prabhas) is a curious character entangled in this web. For those who love complex world-building, retelling of mythological stories on vast canvases and apocalyptic tales, director Nag Ashwin’s film can be quite a spectacle. The exceptional production standards are also breathtaking. Amitabh Bachchan has brought his A game and is the one who steals the show. Deepika’s central role is de-glam throughout, but she lends SUM80 a suiting personality. Kamal Haasan, Dulquer Salmaan, Anna Ben, Shobhana, Vijay Deverakonda, Mrunal Thakur, Rajamouli, Ram Gopal Varma… the cameo list is humongous though not with a quality follow-through for all of them. The fight sequences between Ashwathama and Bhairava are fun, though Big B’s antics are more impressive than the rebel star’s. It's Amitabh Bachchan who towers in this Prabhas film, more than the Telugu actor. The humour in the film falls flat almost all the time, especially in Prabhas’ sequences. The creative liberties taken by the writers are interesting, but it’s hard to feel emotionally invested or connected to any party in the story. The end credits provide hope to the franchise-hungry audience. And if you want to offer the 'Kalki' cinematic universe a chance, give the film a try. You might not care about the cliffhanger climax now, but what if you do when a stronger second part with a richer universe comes to life?

Kalki Movie Review: A Stylish Action Thriller That Will Surprise You

Rajasekhar is back on the big screen with an intelligent action thriller after PSV Garuda Vega (2017) . All of a sudden, the actor seems to be picking the right scripts. His strengths are obviously action dramas. His most successful films from the 80s and 90s had him either shouting or fighting for the most part. Now that the trends have changed, the angry man has calmed down a bit. If Praveen Sattaru (director of PSV Garuda Vega ) put his lead in a marriage that was hitting a dead-end to produce comedy, Prashanth Varma (director of Kalki ) puts his protagonist in the shoes of a cop who's always ready with wisecracks.

The film begins with an introduction of the various characters that have taken Kollapur under their control. Even before the faces of Perumandlu (Shatru) and Narsappa (Ashutosh Rana) show up, you know that they're the villains. Narsappa, especially, reminded me of Bavuji (Vineet Kumar) from Vikramarkudu – they're uncouth people who have an army of savages. They rape women and suffer no consequences since everybody is afraid of them. Commoners, in these films, usually cry and look up to the sky hoping that the gods they pray to will save them.

Varma's hero, Kalki (Rajasekhar), isn't just a namesake. The movie, like his directorial debut Awe , is full of metaphors and references to Hindu gods. Kali, Meera, Radha, Shiva, Yogi, Moksha, Krishnaveni, and Parvathi are some of the characters from Awe . Similarly, in Kalki , you'll find an idol of Narasimha in the background when somebody gets stabbed in the stomach by the hero. Kalki also uses an axe, a weapon that resembles the Sudarshana Chakra, and even a bow and arrow to fight the modern-day demons. He, sometimes, uses them to protect himself, too. He is, after all, investigating a murder case in Kollapur. If you're still guessing about his spiritual identity (an avatar of Lord Vishnu), look at the name of his sidekick – Devadatta (Rahul Ramakrishna).

Devadatta is a crime reporter here and not the name of the horse that Lord Kalki rides. In last week's release, Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya , Shruti Sharma starred as an assistant to whom the detective (played by Naveen Polishetty) revealed his plans. By literally thinking out loud and saying what his future course of action would involve to the assistant, the viewers didn't have to spend time in connecting the dots. Similarly, Kalki and Devadatta travel together throughout the small town and put the pieces together. Kalki comes up with an answer for every question that Devadatta asks, for the latter is a stand-in for the audiences' opinions and doubts. And with Rahul as the face of a journalist, there's more room for humor.

The entire film looks like it's been dunked in a sepia-lake. This is definitely done to give it the feeling of an early eighties setting. The time period is probably 83-84 since K. Viswanath's Sagara Sangamam is playing in the theatres and it's mentioned that Indira Gandhi is the Prime Minister.

When Kalki comes to Kollapur in his jeep in the beginning, he looks out of place. Most of the men in the town are seen in dhotis, whereas Kalki is seen in colorful clothes. Of course, his entry is meant to take our attention away from Narsappa, who's unveiling a statue of his deceased brother, Sekhar Babu, in the middle of the town. Kalki seems to be the only person who can finally put the aging antagonist behind the bars. But Varma doesn't even make his hero break into a sweat during action scenes.

There's a terrific battle-episode set outside the police station where Kalki uses an umbrella as a dangerous weapon. It's not terrific because of Kalki's ingeniousness; it's terrific because of the way it unfolds. The rains gently fall while the extras fall like flies. This is cinematographic poetry. And Shravan Bharadwaj's energetic background score takes the scenes a few notches higher.

The entire film looks like it's been dunked in a sepia-lake. This is definitely done to give it the feeling of an early eighties setting. The time period is probably 83-84 since K. Viswanath's Sagara Sangamam is playing in the theatres and it's mentioned that Indira Gandhi is the Prime Minister. Oh, the favourite drink from that era, Gold Spot, also makes a cameo appearance. But Kalki , the film, is tonally different from Sukumar's Rangasthalam . Though both of them are set in the same period, they don't appear to give us the same picture of the Andhra Pradesh of the 80s. From the way the Telugu language is spoken to the filmmakers' sensibilities, there's not a thing that runs parallelly between them except for item songs – "Jigelu Rani," and "Horn Pom, Pom OK Please."

And the bigger disappointment, in Kalki , is the inclusion of a romantic subplot. Padma (Adah Sharma) has nothing to do in the film other than stare at her love-interest with sorrowful eyes. She's a doctor who doesn't have any significant role in the proceedings. Couldn't half the dozen screenplay writers think of a better idea to bring a woman, whose job is to play a sad girlfriend, into the plot other than by making her look like an utter fool?

So, Kalki didn't exactly leave me with an awful aftertaste. It is, unquestionably, an enjoyable fare. But I wish it were a wholesome action movie that didn't have to try too hard to land.

Kalki 2898 AD OTT Release: Will It be Available on Amazon Prime Video?

Kalki 2898 AD continues to captivate audiences nearly a month after its theatrical release on June 27, 2024. Interestingly, the film has become the highest-grossing Indian movie of 2024, thanks to its substantial box office collections. Moreover, recent reports have confirmed that the movie will be available on OTT platforms in the second half of August.

Directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD features an impressive ensemble cast including Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan in the lead roles. Additionally, the supporting cast includes Disha Patani, Saswata Chatterjee, Brahmanandam, Rajendra Prasad, and Shobhana. Furthermore, the film features cameo appearances by Vijay Deverakonda, Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur, Ram Gopal Varma, Krishnakumar, S. S. Rajamouli, Faria Abdullah, Srinivas Avasarala, and K. V. According to recent reports , the makers of Kalki 2898 AD are planning to release the magnum opus on digital platforms earlier than expected. Furthermore, Amazon Prime Video is expected to premiere the film by August 23rd in multiple languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. However, official confirmation from the streaming giant is still pending. Additionally, for the Hindi-speaking audience, the digital release is anticipated on Netflix, though this has yet to be confirmed.

'Stree 2' is expected to open on a fantastic note this Independence Day, August 15. The film is showing a good trend in the advance booking, and is likely to go past 'Fighter' and the Hindi version of 'Kalki 2898 AD' on its opening day at the box office.

Directed by Amar Kaushik, who also helmed the previous film in the franchise, the film could comfortably see an opening of over Rs 20 crore nett on Thursday. It is most likely to establish the biggest Bollywood opening of the year , by surpassing the first day business of 'Fighter' and 'Kalki 2898 AD', both of which collected Rs 22.5 crore in Hindi.

The Shraddha Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao-starrer sold over 1.2 lakh tickets by 9 am on Monday, August 12, reported the trade website Sacnilk . It has grossed Rs 4.09 crore so far, which is already way more than what the last Bollywood releases - 'Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha' and 'Ulajh' - collected during advance sales.
